BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT W
hile fall has technically been underway for months, in San Joaquin County, it routinely feels like the season doesn’t start until November. That’s when the weather truly starts to cool, the leaves change, and the crisp mornings beg for warm cups of coffee and tea to start the day. There’s not much I like more than whipping on a jacket before walking the dogs on a cool autumn day. With the start of, what I like to call, California’s fall, there is much to be thankful for. The literal holiday of thanks is right around the corner, a precursor for the rest of the holiday season. There’s warm meals of comfort food available at all of our favorite restaurants, with flavors ripe in autumn squash, cinnamon, and thyme. There’s extra time off work to spend with loved ones. And those holidays certainly come in handy when you’re planning a trip out of town. Of all there is to be thankful for, what I’m most thankful for is you, our readers. And I mean that sincerely. Without you, we don’t get to do what we love—share local stories and promote a region that gives so much to all of us. It’s not about the bottom line; it’s about the joy we get from putting this magazine together every month, the community members we get to meet, the talented team of writers and photographers who get to showcase their talents on our pages, and the connection San Joaquin County creates within the community. The issues of SJM are always created for you, but I’m also dedicating this one to you, our readers. Thank you for coming back every month. Thank you for the thoughtful letters and comments. Thank you for engaging with us and showing just how much you care. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for everything.

LAST THOUGHTS ‘TIS THE SEASON FOR CURLING UP with a blanket and a balanced malbec while we binge watch our favorite TV shows. We created a list of bingeable series and the wines we’d pair with them, but in our research, we also came across some staggering statistics. Did you know that 87.61% of Americans admit to binge watching TV? Feelings around television have changed, with 61% of millennials calling it a social experience. The average customer watches 3.4 different streaming services and most of them are doing it on Sunday, the most common day of the week for binge watching television.

amon Villalobos may hail from Stockton, but his talent is firmly rooted in the comic book universe. This remarkable illustrator has always had a knack for drawing, and it has propelled him into working for Marvel, one of the most iconic names in comic books. Although he didn’t initially think he was talented enough to make a career out of drawing, Ramon decided to post his work online and study the craft of creating for comics. Ramon explains, “One day, out of the blue, I got an email from an editor asking if I wanted to do one for Marvel. It was just the power of social media where I had built a small following but by that point, I had done small comics with friends and made exactly one ‘real’ comic. But I said, ‘yes’ and then suddenly I was a comic book artist!”

wardrobe and sets, and special effects, while juggling relatively short deadlines. Additionally, he needs to keep in mind how Spiderman or Batman “should” act, as millions of fans around the world have come to know the intricacies of the characters, their backgrounds, and their behaviors. Creating the world for iconic comic characters can be tough but sometimes new material proves even more difficult. Ramon’s current comic is “They’re All Terrible,” published by Bad Idea. He considers it some of his best work, but it is by far his most challenging. He says, “It’s a barbarian fantasy comic and everything I draw I’m trying to make unique to my own vision, which is tough because I never really cared for that material before. But because I had no prior attachment to that kind of stuff, I just mixed up all things I’ve never seen in fantasy worlds before like bikers, Cholos, and hippies, and made it something that felt new.” In the future, Ramon hopes to write his own comic books, including a western, solely because he likes the genre. “A little over ten years ago, my friend Mike Millerick started StocktonCon to see how a comic book convention would turn up and it was wildly successful!” says Ramon. “I helped him early on to spread the news and have drawn posters for it every year since… when people go to the show and meet me, it’s always nice to talk to young kids from here who also love comics and show me their The logistics of creating for drawings.” Ultimately, he enjoys sharing the Marvel universe are equal advice to aspiring comic book artists. parts a “by the book” job Ramon considers himself lucky in and individual artistry. that his mother provided him with At the end of the grace and patience while he day, much of was attending Manteca High “I don’t think I have what Ramon School, and later, San bigger fans than my creates is done Joaquin Delta College. siblings who still ask me by “fly by the “My entire family has for drawings when I post seat of your pants” been supportive since I them online." creativity. “When you was a kid,” he explains. “I draw for Marvel and DC don’t think I have bigger fans Comics specifically, they than my siblings who still ask me give you a script that tells you for drawings when I post them online what information needs to go even though I figured they would have on the page to tell a story they’ve seen enough of my stuff by now.” asked someone else to tell,” Ramon explains. “The job is to tell that story as effectively as a movie director would, picking the shots, emphasizing the moments, and creating the flow of the story.” FOLLOW ALONG: When creating the world for @theramonvillalobos comic books, Ramon must factor in how the characters act, their

WINE SCENE
The Lodi
“We just want to provide a fun, educational and memorable experience in Lodi Wine Country,” – Brian Luke, Owner.
Every Taste of Lodi Wine Tour includes visits to three picturesque vineyards in Lodi Wine Country, and tours always begin and end at Scotto’s Wine & Cider, conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Lodi on School Street. All tasting fees are included in the tour price, as is lunch (a catered cold sandwich or salad ordered at the time of booking, with glutenfree options available). As an extra bonus, guests are extended discounts on bottle purchases. “We are here to support all the wineries and promote Lodi Wine Country and its tourism
industry,” Brian says. The Lodi Wine Trolley supports local by partnering with other Lodi businesses, including their lunch supplier, Big Belly Deli, and wineries. “Our list of partnered wineries continues to grow as word about us gets out,” Brian adds. “It's very exciting.” To sign up, visit the website. Tours are available Saturdays and Sundays year round, with additional time slots on select Fridays. The goal, according to Brian, is to eventually operate the Lodi Wine Trolley three days per week.
Wine Trolley RIDE INTO TOWN IN STYLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
P
icture this: riding through the vineyards in a San Francisco-style cable car, not a care in the world as your host for the day manages the itinerary and the driving so you can sit back, relax, and imbibe with family and friends. With 13 winery partners (and growing), and lunches provided by Big Belly Deli, the wine trolley offers a full-service experience for locals and visitors to Lodi Wine Country. The Lodi Wine Trolley had its inaugural ride on June 24, a festive wine tasting experience and replica of the long-running tour in Livermore that debuted in 2014. Brian Luke, the owner and founder of the Lodi Wine Trolley, is the same mastermind behind the original Livermore concept. “We provide a fun and upscale wine tasting experience,” Brian says. “We are not a party bus, but we still know how to have a great time on the wine trolley!”

CALIFORNIA’S

mador City is both California’s smallest city by size and its least populous, so it fits effortlessly into the trending Small Town, USA travel having its moment. The goldrush town is home to just a smattering of family-owned businesses that make up the half-block downtown, settled between Sutter Creek and Plymouth and often recognized as the gateway to the Shenandoah Valley wine scene. However, you can sip, savor, and sleep without venturing outside of city limits. The Imperial Hotel looms over Od Highway 49 where all of the action happens in Amador City. First opened in 1879 as a mercantile store, the brick façade building is enjoying a second life as a

charming boutique hotel boasting just six rooms, each of which dons its own unique moniker. Renovations in 1968 and 1988 saw many changes to the building, and the most recent remodel was completed this year by new owner Kevin Carter. The rooms are all adorned in farmhouse chic décor, with big, white plush beds and exposed brick walls. Original wooden floors have been refinished and laid with rugs and, in select suites, French doors open out onto private decks overlooking the city below. When you’re not cozying up with coffee or chatting over a glass of vino, you can take advantage of the hotel’s other creature comforts: a full restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving a menu of high-end, urban cuisine that
utilizes the region’s rich farmland. Order up French-pressed coffee and French toast on the front patio in the morning or slip into a cozy corner booth and enjoy the chef’s tasting menu for dinner. If you’re just there for drinks, sidle up to the bar for an artistic cocktail. When you’re not lounging at Imperial, make your way down the road to Kevin’s other business, Break Even Beermakers. Here, the focus is fun, fresh takes on sustainable beer and partnerships with local growers, plus there’s a full menu of goods to enjoy. The aptly named Small Town boasts wines from near and far, plus small plates and accessible entrees while Holgate Hill focuses on wines from the Jackson vineyard just down the road.

A NEW KIND OF PAIRING The Last Of Us paired with 2021 Vapor Trail Zinfandel from Oak Farm Vineyards What wine would you drink in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? We’ll reach for a glass of something blood red with high alcohol content to calm our nerves as we run from the infected. Succession paired with The Gala Brut from Peltier Winery & Vineyards At pivotal moments throughout the series, the characters toast with a bottle of sparkling wine. That’s why we’re suggesting a high-end and bubbly sipper to pair with this show’s four seasons. The 2019 Gala brut champagne comes in two varieties, Brut and Brut Nature, both rosé sparklings made using the methode champenoise technique. All episodes are streaming on Max.
Ted Lasso paired with Chardonnay from McManis Family Vineyards The posh accents carrying Ted Lasso deserve a fancy sipper. The cacophony of flavors lend themselves to the sweet and wholesome characters on the screen. Enjoy stone fruit, banana, and vanilla flavors accompanied by hints of buttered popcorn. All three seasons are streaming on Apple TV.
Yellowstone with Three Finger Jack Rum Barrel Aged Red Blend They mostly sip whiskey and drink beer on Yellowstone, but if you’re a wine connoisseur looking for the most western wine to sip while watching, look no further than the Three Finger Jack label. These wild west wines embrace their gold country roots and a bit of outlaw culture. You’ll get smoky, campfire flavors thanks to the rum barrels used to age this 2019 vintage. Season five marks the series final. The series is free on Peacock.
You paired with 2020 Devious Primitivo from Macchia Wines Deep, dark, and brooding. Even the name of the 2020 Devious Primitivo matches the vibe of this sultry cheap thrill, based on a book of the same name. With four seasons under its belt, we’re awaiting the fifth and final, hopefully coming early in 2024, available on Netflix.
And Just Like That paired with 2021 Estate Grown Rose from Mettler Family Vineyards A show as light and refreshing as this deserves a wine to match its fun, flirty female energy. The watermelon and floral aromas will tickle you pink as you notice bursts of strawberry and raspberry preserves on the palate. If you finish all three seasons quickly, go back in time and watch all six seasons of Sex and the City. Both are streaming on Max, SJMAG.COM

MEZZO Mezzo in Stockton is regularly updating their menu to reflect the flavors of the season. This November, they are celebrating the warmth of autumn with two mouth-watering appetizers you will not want to miss. The first is their Arancini Ai Funghi Selvatici. Arancini are rich, delicate rice balls that are deep-fried and often filled with savory spices and herbs. When you pop them in your mouth, they burst with flavor and texture. Mezzo prepares their arancini with wild mushrooms, risotto (like an Italian mac-and-cheese, made with rice), basil aioli, and pickled shallots. This unique and winning combination is sure to be on your list of loved recipes at Mezzo. Don’t forget to order their Carpaccio, as well. It consists of thinly shaved tender beef, fried capers, fresh arugula, extra virgin olive oil, and shaved parmesan, with a side of crispy crostini—perfect little pieces of toast. Every bite is ultra-satisfying. “They are our most popular appetizers at the moment, and they are very sharable,” says Manager Sofia Crawford. Try these appetizers with some of Mezzo’s impressive selection of seasonal salads, veggies, house-made pastas, and main dish meats. You’ll love how each menu item at Mezzo is created to bring out the cozy spirit of Fall. Mezzo, 3499 Brookside Rd., Ste. A,(209) 473-7300, MezzoStockton.com

PAPAPAVLO’S BISTRO & BAR Co-owners Andy and Jennifer Pappas are famous for their Flaming Cheese appetizer at their restaurant, Papapavlo’s, with locations in both Stockton’s Lincoln Center and Lodi’s School Street. The Flaming Cheese is a must-try. Lightly breaded kasseri cheese (like goat cheese, but firmer) is cut to size, breaded, warmed, and transferred to a hot pan, where it meets a flaming shot of uzo (Greek liquor), and is served with fresh lemon. “This is absolutely perfect to spread all over your fresh pita bread,” Jennifer says. “It’s gooey cheese, made to serve with bread, how can you go wrong?” Papapavlo’s Bistro & Bar, 501 Lincoln Ctr., Stockton (209) 477-6133, Papapavlos.com

MIDGLEY’S PUBLIC HOUSE Located in Stockton’s Lincoln Plaza, you’ll love any of the appetizers Midgley’s Public House offers. Our favorites when we want something over-the-top is the Ahi Nachos. Marinated ahi, fried wonton chips, avocado, flying fish roe, cilantro, seaweed salad, sesame seeds, and wasabi cream make the most unique and tasty nachos you have ever had. Its satisfying, crunchy, and creamy bites will tantalize your taste buds, and liven up your dining experience. “Our Ahi Nachos are one of our most popular appetizers,” says Owner Laci Midgley. The second appetizer to be sure to try at Midgely’s is their Crack Shrimp. “Our Crack Shrimp is a play on something we brought back from Maui,” says Laci. “From a restaurant called Down the Hatch in Downtown Lahaina, it was called Volcano Shrimp.” Midgley’s created their Crack Shrimp consisting of tempera-fried little shrimps tossed in sweet Sriracha sauce with pickled red onion, cilantro, and green onion. Unfortunately, the Lahaina restaurant responsible for the inspiration of Midgley’s appetizer was lost in the recent Maui fires. Midgley’s is respectfully serving their Crack Shrimp as a continued tribute to Down the Hatch. Midgley’s Public House, 296 Lincoln Ctr., Stockton, (209) 474-7700, MidgleysPublicHouse.com

Here, the team have perfected preparing the most tender pieces of duck breast meat, which they wrap with crispy bacon, and slices of fresh jalapeño and bell peppers, all before it is served with a sweet and hot pepper sauce to complement every bite. This appetizer is ideal for those who are looking to expand their palate with a less traditional meat. After all, duck is a great protein and not as common on modern menus. THE KITCHEN @ STONEBRIER Chef Shane Tracewell is meticulous when it comes to preparing delicious, thoughtful, and nourishing appetizers. Take his salmon cakes, for example. “The salmon cakes feature a couple different textures as we use hand-chopped and a simple ‘mousse’ of the fish to allow its aromatics and spiced flavors to permeate,” says Tracewell. “We also mindfully use untoasted panko to coat the cakes as this allows for moisture to be absorbed and create a true cake rather than a crusted fish appetizer.” Sounds delicious, right? “The cakes are finished with spicy aioli, sesame, and red pepper coulis,” says Tracewell. His Jalapeno Deviled Eggs are nothing short of boast-worthy, as well. “The filling is standard with mayo and mustard, but the team also adds Worcestershire sauce to match the umami feel of deviled egg mix before it’s finished with cilantro, chives, and green onions. “When we plate the eggs, they are topped with bacon, caramelized onion jam, and fresh jalapeno,” he explains. This fall, be sure to try one of Bistro 135’s unique and memorable shareables—their Braised Pork Belly, which is a savory sensation of onion soubise (think French onion soup simmered and pureed into a thick and creamy sauce), crispy pork belly, juicy pomegranate, and chive salad. pring and summer used to be the only time to get married. Prices were higher but fair weather promised a wedding day without rain (or kind of promised anyway). But lately more brides are choosing to get married in the wedding offseason, trading their strapless necklines for lace sleeves and deep burgundy florals over spring pinks and greens. Not only does the calendar open up when you stop pigeonholing your festivities into just half of the year, prices are often (though not always) lower, too.

Lean into the theme
While the season doesn’t have to be your entire theme, it can come with some guidance. Color schemes can trend toward jewel tones or natural shades of browns and reds (the colors of changing leaves). You can also go more literal. Halloween fans? Force your friends into a spooky season extravaganza complete with a black gown and dripping wax candles as the centerpiece. Or show off your love of Christmas—and perhaps play homage to your holiday meet-cute—with mini Christmas trees for tablescapes and a luxurious shawl or cream-colored peacoat to compliment your wedding dress. Regardless of what the weather is doing outside, this is the perfect opportunity to design a warm and cozy wedding. Create your own starry night using fairy lights, light corner fireplaces to warm a chilly room, and serve signature cocktails for cold weather (think hot toddies or spiked cocoa). From floral colors to reception décor, you can do a lot with a fall or winter theme.

Plan for bad weather
In California, the weather remains fairly nice year round, and you won’t have to plan for snow unless you’re headed to the mountains to say, “I do.” However, rain and cold weather still occur, and you’ll want to plan ahead. Even if you dream of getting married outdoors, keep guest comfort in mind. If you must exchange vows in a barn at sunset, plan a short ceremony and an indoor reception. Suggest guests bring wraps or provide cozy blankets (perhaps one for every other seat to encourage cuddling up with your plus one). Small heaters can be brought in if they meet venue safety standards. You may want to choose cute boots and even provide umbrellas for the wedding party, and perhaps guests, too. You can still make nature part of your big day by renting a white tent with big windows that will let the fall glow in or bring in plenty of trees, leaves, pinecones, etc. to decorate an indoor space.

Feed guests appropriately
This is your opportunity to get creative with the menu. Comfort foods such as butternut squash and sage gnocchi or southern favorites perfectly accompany a late season wedding. Exchange crisp salads for warm soups and make sure the bread hits the table nice and toasty. The liquor served should also be considered. Warm beverages made with cinnamon whiskey will fit the season while deep Burgundy and Bordeaux wines will be more pleasing than chilled albarino. A hot chocolate bar at the entrance instead of a champagne fountain adds a dose of fun, especially if you include extras such as shots of whiskey and over-sized marshmallows. Cider taps are another option.

Embody the season
If you’re going for winter bride, go all out. Consider a faux fur wrap to wear around your shoulders and a bouquet of pine and eucalyptus. Not only will most brides want to consider heavier garments to keep them goose-bump free, but the impact of the overall look will also change when you lean into seasonal trends like layers and lace. Other ideas for embracing the season include weaving fall florals into your hair or dressing up a white dress with ruby or emerald pumps. For him, choose a boutonniere of faux mistletoe for a December wedding and keep in mind that summer suits look different than those worn in winter. It’s not just the bride who should be on theme!

Capture the moment
A skilled photographer who knows how to work around darker lighting and get the shot even in poor weather will be your best friend during this experience. It’s much easier to get the shot during golden hour on the beach than it is while snow falls on your face. Trust someone who has handled an offseason wedding before to take your photos and video of the big day. After all, you only get one chance to get it right.

Bigger, Better Diamonds on a Budget
GET THE ENGAGEMENT RING OF HER DREAMS WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK BY NORA HESTON TARTE
I
t’s the moment most women dream of and most men meticulously plan, the moment you get down on one knee and ask your person to be your forever. A huge part of that process, and for some the most important part, is selecting an engagement ring that will wow your bride-to-be but also is something she’ll want to wear every day. There used to be one clear front runner when it came to ring selection—natural diamonds. And anything else was almost booed. Lab-created diamonds, however, are growing in popularity

diamond,” Jeff says. “Also, you can find lab-grown diamonds in all different qualities just like a natural mined diamond.” That means ring buyers are not sacrificing cut, clarity, or color when purchasing a labcreated diamond. Instead, they are often able to buy a larger, and perhaps even more quality, stone within their budget. While diamonds may be the most popular choice, they are not the only choice. Labcreated gemstones of many varieties are available. “The thing that has really changed the landscape is the processes have gotten so much better,” Jeff explains. “Without very sophisticated equipment, it is nearly impossible to separate natural versus synthetic gemstones.” Natural mined diamonds do still make up the bulk of sales at Peck’s. “Customers still appreciate the rarity of a natural diamond and what that represents,” Jeff says. “Labgrown diamonds have just provided another alternative for our customers.”
“The number one benefit of a lab diamond is that you can get that look at an incredible value,” – Jeff Fields, Peck’s Jewelers
for a number of reasons. “A lab-created diamond is exactly like a natural-mined diamond. It has the same chemical composition and structure as a mined diamond,” explains Jeff Fields, owner of Peck’s Jewelers. “The primary difference is that it is produced in a lab. Visually you can't see a difference.” Lab-created diamonds have created a way for jewelers to sell bigger diamonds at a lower price point. Jeff admits he sells more naturally mined diamonds still, but that the number of lab-created diamonds sold is also growing. It’s a serious trend. Some people have cited environmental and social reasons for not wanting a mined stone. For most, though, price is the biggest draw. “Lab diamonds are a fraction of the price of a natural mined

Unplug, Unwind, and Imbibe MORGAN HILL OFFERS SWEET AND SIMPLE SMALL-TOWN ATTRACTIONS BY NORA HESTON TARTE
W
hether you’re looking for a quiet weekend away or need a stopover on a longer road trip, Morgan Hill is just the place to recharge your batteries for a night, or two. The sleepy hillside town located approximately 30 minutes south of San Jose is bursting with hidden treasures. From the picturesque—and very chic—downtown to a gaggle of high-end tasting rooms, the food, wine, and atmosphere of Morgan Hill all call upon the weary traveler to take a beat, fuel their bodies, and have a little fun.

NOVEMBER 2023

EAT. There are plenty of places to refuel while visiting Morgan Hill. After all, the Santa Clara Valley town is perhaps best known for its farms and related exports. Whether you’re looking for a laidback spot to kick up your feet and stretch your legs or you prefer to dive into a homemade masterpiece by one of the resident chefs capitalizing on the regional bounty, there’s no doubt you’ll be well fed while visiting. If you’re looking for a sit down meal, Odeum will not disappoint. The sophisticated Mediterranean restaurant has both a pretty outdoor patio and a light and airy inside dining room. The menu is rich with cultural favorites, including duck confit, tzatziki starters, a short list of salads, plenty of pizzas, and robust pasta dishes. If you’re looking for something filling, we recommend the Pappardelle al
Pastore, a bowl of noodles topped with roasted lamb ragout and kalamata olives, bursting with flavors of white wine, roasted garlic, rosemary, and cracked pepper. A lighter lunch can be enjoyed at the vegan downtown hotspot Craft Roots. The 100-percent plant-based menu surprises with more than salads and tofu. Instead, cheezy (a nut-based cheese alternative to dairy) dishes are aplenty and even burgers and ice cream grace the menu. If you’re looking for some place a little rowdier, Bubbles & Brew promises wine tasting experiences, accessible crowdpleasing fare, and live music on weekends on the outdoor patio dubbed Grant’s Garden. This neighborhood bar feels like home, and you’re bound to make friends. Choose from a seat outside and wines and brews by the glass or mosey on indoors to enjoy a tasting flight. We recommend starting off with a charcuterie and cheese board called A Little Bit of Both ($24.50 for cured meats and two cheeses) before diving into dinner.
DRINK. Those who come to Morgan Hill often do so for the libations. A haven for everything grown in ground, the vineyards planted here offer storied histories. The best place to start is at Guglielmo Winery in large part because of how far the family operation dates back. Come for the wine but stay for the history lesson. Tours take guests around the property to peruse operations before circling back to the tasting room where you can sip on some
of the label’s wines. We warn, there are plenty. MOHI Social is another worthy stop for wines. There is a vineyard on the outskirts of town under the name MOHI Wine where you can sip before prancing though the lush greenery that abounds, but the brand also has a downtown location that offers a full restaurant and bar to accentuate the MOHI wines. This is a great spot to stop and people watch with a glass of chilled vino or a fancy mimosa in hand. If you’re hungry, order up; MOHI Social serves breakfast,

escape lunch, and dinner. Another picturesque stop for your wine tasting tour is Clos LaChance. Just over the hill in San Martin, the sprawling estate proffers gorgeous views of the valley. There are perks to being a member here, including what kind of tasting you can have and where you can sit, but even if you’re traipsing the grounds with a glass of vino in hand, you won’t be disappointed—by the wine or the views. If you prefer to trade in your wine glass for a beer stein, Kelly Brewing Company is our first pick. Sure, there is an impressive line-up of delicious beers (ranging from light brews to heavy stouts), but even aside from the drink menu, Kelly Brewing proves it’s the place to be. Come for the ice cold brewski but stay for the live music, outdoor stage, rotating food truck presence, indoor shuffleboard and pool tables, and the delicious food. If that
wasn’t enough, even the décor is a sight to see. The 20-foot vaulted ceilings boast a collection of paneled artwork using acoustic sheets installed to mediate noise. The painted sheets depict album covers Owner Ross Kelly collecte d in childhood.
PLAY. Through December 31, visitors can stop by Morgan Hill’s most popular farmstead. Open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Andy’s Orchard has a well-stocked country store bursting with fresh fruits such as Hachiya persimmons, cherries (sweet or tart), and Asian plums, plus homemade confections. You can also choose to stock your basket with goods from the local farmer’s market. Downtown Morgan Hill comes alive every Saturday, year-round, with 35+ eager vendors looking to sell everything from homegrown produce to fresh flowers, and local honey. Parking is simple, just take your car to the Train Depot Station before walking a short distance to the market. Once you’ve exhausted the booths at the market (9 a.m.-1 p.m.), you can finish up shopping on the surrounding cute and kitschy boutiques, home goods stores, and more. Some Saturdays there are sidewalk sales.

If you brought your hiking shoes, hit the trails. Rancho Canada del Oro sits on the outskirts of town, a large preserve in the Santa Cruz Mountain foothills. It’s the perfect opportunity to unplug and get in tune with nature, choosing between easy and challenging routes; there are 12 miles of trails in all. An easy trek is the Llagas Creek Loop, a half-mile meadow loop on the valley floor.

estled in Downtown Tracy is a magical little place called The Press Wine Bar, serving up a delicious Italian menu of small plates, locally made wines, and other libations, in a chic and sophisticated setting. The concept comes from husbandand-wife superstars Randy and Tammy Jones. With The Press, they have created an opulent wine-and-dine experience for locals. Inspired by Italian kitchens, the menu resembles the charming and romantic sophistication of Italy itself, with a focus on quality ingredients and fresh, bold flavor. The European experience starts the second you sit down. Borrowing a page out of Spain’s book, Italian restaurants began serving tapas, an appetizer or snack, in their cafes and restaurants. Italy calls their tapas stuzzichini, meaning small antipasto or appetizer. At The Press, a handful of various stuzzichini can be combined to make a full meal, often served alongside wine. “Wine is a social experience. So is eating. Small plates enhance the social experience by giving

people the opportunity to share plates while sharing stories and wine,” says Tammy. Scan the menu at The Press and choose your table’s nibbles, such as Truffle Parmesan Popcorn, Fried Cheese Raviolis, or Mini Corn Dogs. Don’t miss the chance to savor The Press’ Fettuccini and Clams (or Alfredo depending on your mood), Pepper Steak with Brandy Cream Sauce, Crab Cakes, or Pig Wings (slow roasted, bone-in pork shanks). If there is one dish you must try while at The Press, let it be their Meatballs with HouseMade Marinara Sauce. Says Tammy, “My husband, Randy, has a love and passion for cooking. He developed most of the recipes for the items on our menu. One of the first things he taught himself to make was marinara. After refining and tweaking the recipe over many years, he finally had a marinara he loved and this is the marinara we serve at The Press today.” Tasting several dishes is not only pleasing to the palate, but bonding for the entire table. Trying new foods with others is one of the surest ways to embrace togetherness and build a bond.
“We want our guests to feel like they are relaxing at home with a good friend, a good meal, and good wine,” Tammy says. The rest of the menu proffers fresh salads, oven-baked flatbreads with toppings such as sausage, sun-dried tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic glaze, and a collection of cheese plates. Everything is designed with sharing in mind. As if your taste buds aren’t salivating already, be sure to save room for dessert. The Press offers a delicious selection of gourmet cheeses with fresh jams, honey, fruit, and nuts, served with a sliced baguette. A rich piece of their Molten Chocolate Lava Cake, Lemon Bar, or Flourless Chocolate Torte is enough to drift you into foodie heaven. Pair it with a port to continue your European dining experience, where wine is hardly negotiable. If you’re not sure which drink to pair with any of your selections, staff is there to guide you. “Wine can be very intimidating, especially to new wine drinkers. We try to keep it simple and uncomplicated. We don't want people to be so focused on drinking the ‘right wine’ with a meal that they choose a wine they don't enjoy simply because it goes well with the food they are eating,” Tammy says. “I always say the best wine to have with a meal is the wine that is in your glass. If you are enjoying the wine, you will enjoy the meal.”

5 Wines for Thanksgiving PICK THE VINO TO PAIR WITH EACH COURSE BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER
1. 2022 Pax Vermentino, The Bench, Clements Hills AVA, $30
2. 2022 Acquiesce Jolie, Mokelumne River AVA, $34
3. 2022 Klinker Brick Bricks and Roses Rosé, $17
4. 2021 Lorenza Cinsaut, Bechthold Vineyard, Mokelumne River AVA, $36
A zippy and mineral driven white wine with aromas of honeysuckle and flavors of lemon zest, this delightful vino will sing alongside roasted turkey, pan fried green beans, and savory stuffing. Aged in stainless steel and neutral oak, and bursting with bright acidity, it’s the perfect white wine to cut through a butter-laden Thanksgiving dinner.
A delicate and aromatic white blend of grenache blanc and viognier, the newest wine released from Acquiesce is the quintessential bottle to pair with your Thanksgiving feast. On the nose, hints of honeysuckle prevail, but on the palate, Jolie boasts ripe stone fruit, with bursts of lemon zest. A round finish and lingering acidity begs for buttery, creamy mashed potatoes, and herb roasted carrots
This Provencal style blend of grenache, mourvèdre, syrah, and carignane is fresh and bright enough to stand up to most of your Thanksgiving dishes. This bottling is delicate on the palate with flavors of fresh strawberry and hints of citrus that result in a fresh and balanced wine. Sip this with grandma’s green bean casserole, creamy mashed potatoes, and a deep-fried turkey.
The first red wine produced by Lorenza is sophisticated, successful, and sexy. The Cinsaut fruit hails from the historic Bechthold Vineyard (planted in 1886) and this bottling is an exceptional representation of the variety. Ripe red cherries with clove and cinnamon, finished with a lingering brightness that pleasantly pleases the palate. Pair with cranberry sauce or maple-glazed carrots.

measuring cup, beat together eggs, pumpkin, and cream or evaporated milk. Whisk into dry ingredients. For the best flavor, cover and refrigerate filling overnight before baking. Lightly grease a 9" pie pan that's at least 1 1/2" deep. Roll pie dough out to a 13" circle, and transfer to pan. Crimp the edges above the rim; this will give you a little extra headroom to hold filling when it expands in the oven. Refrigerate crust while oven preheats to 400°F. When oven is hot, place pie pan on a baking sheet. Pour filling into unbaked pie shell. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until filling is set two inches from the edge. The center should be wobbly. Remove pie from oven and cool on a rack; the center will finish cooking through as the pie sits. Store leftover pumpkin pie, covered, in refrigerator for up to five days.
DEEP DISH APPLE PIE INGREDIENTS
4 lbs. Granny Smith apples, peeled, quartered, cored 1 lemon, zested 1 orange, zested 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice ½ c. plus 1 tsp. to sprinkle on top ¼ c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. kosher salt ¾ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. ground nutmeg 1/8 tsp. allspice
DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut each apple quarter into thirds crosswise and combine in a bowl with citrus zest, juice, half cup of sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Roll out half of the pie dough and drape over a nine-inch pie pan to extend approximately one inch over rim. Fill with apple mixture and brush edge of the bottom pie crust with egg wash so the top crust will stick. Top with second crust and trim edges to about one-inch over the rim. Tuck top crust under edge of the bottom crust and pinch together, using the back of a fork or your fingers. Brush entire top crust with egg wash, sprinkle with one teaspoon sugar, and cut four to five slits. Place pie on sheet pan and bake for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, or until crust is golden brown.
PERFECT PIE CRUST INGREDIENTS
1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp. water for egg wash 12 tbsp. very cold unsalted butter 3 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 tbsp. sugar 1/3 c. very cold vegetable shortening 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
DIRECTIONS Dice butter and return to refrigerator while you prepare flour mixture. Place flour, salt, and sugar in bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade and pulse a few times to mix. Add butter and shortening. Pulse 8 to 12 times until butter is the size of peas. With the machine running, pour ice water down the feed tube and pulse until dough begins to form a ball. Dump on a floured board and roll into a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Cut dough in half. Roll each piece on a well-floured board into a circle, rolling from the center to the edge, turning and flouring the dough to make sure it doesn't stick to the board. Fold the dough in half, place in a pie pan, and unfold to fit pan. Repeat with top crust. SJMAG.COM

all brings new flavors to the table, heavy in comfort foods and sweet and savory aromas such as pumpkin, walnut, zucchini, and apple. At Michael David Farm, Michaela Toldeo and her bakery team have perfected the recipes from the family book for 20 years, recipes that were first imagined by Michael and David’s mother, Grandma Jeanne. “Our zucchini orange bread is always the first to sell out and our pumpkin chocolate chip bread is the perfect pairing with a hot cup of coffee,” says Melissa Phillips Stroud, vice president of sales and marketing at Michael David Winery. While the bakery carries many of their specialty baked goods year round, the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving see an uptick in pie turnout. Starting November 1, preorders are ready for the culinary holiday, featuring everything from classics like pumpkin and apple to fruit-forward peach-boysenberry. A winery favorite is the pumpkin walnut. “Think a classic pumpkin

pie with a delicious, candied walnuttopped twist,” she says. “Comforting fall flavors of pumpkin, pumpkin walnut, apple, apple cranberry, and apricot are offered the week of Thanksgiving… They make the perfect addition to a holiday table.” Pies aren’t the only goodies ideal for Thanksgiving dinner. If the hosting duties have fallen on someone else’s shoulders this year, show your thanks by making a hostess gift out of the other goodies. “Our bakery treats offer nostalgic, homemade flavors that help complement a meal beautifully, taking one thing off your host’s plate,” Melissa says. If you’re pairing wine with your sweets, consider picking up the only desserts that didn’t come from Grandma Jeanne’s inspiration. Food Services Manager Juan Santos imagined the recipes for the Freakshow brownies and blondies, and he’s sharing the secret ingredient—a healthy pour of Freakshow wine! And guess where you can get a couple of bottles to crack open with family and friends?

ETHNIC FARE
A Taste of the Middle East
NEW FAST-CASUAL RESTAURANT, YAFA HUMMUS, SETS UP SHOP BY REBEKAH MOAN / D COURTESY OF SUZANNE LEDBETTER
L
overs of Middle Eastern food have a new place to eat in Lodi: Yafa Hummus. At the end of July, Samira Abdallah and her husband Mohamed opened the authentic Middle Eastern fast-casual restaurant at 612 W. Lodi Ave, Suite 106, the site of a former Subway. “We have a love for our ethnic food and Lodi didn’t have anything like it,” Samira says. “We were always looking for places to eat.” They chose Lodi in particular not only to fill a hole in the market but also because Samira was born and raised there. “Lodi is dear to my heart and I wanted to open Yafa Hummus in this community.” The franchise restaurant is known for its hummus of course: spicy, pesto, and classic. Each vegetarian dish is made with chickpeas and tahini but with a slight twist. Spicy

hummus includes herbs and spices to give it an extra kick, the pesto version includes pesto, and the classic hummus is topped with whole chickpeas and olive oil. Other Middle Eastern dishes include a gyro pita and falafel wrap. Two factors set Yafa Hummus apart from other hummus eateries: freshness and authenticity. Everything is made in-house with high-quality ingredients. And the recipes come straight from Yafa, also known as Jaffa, a port city on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea situated in what is now the southern part of Tel Aviv. In 1951, Afeef Awad traveled to the city and learned how to make hummus before moving to Amman, Jordan, and opening his own restaurant. He shared his recipes with his family, who in 2017 opened their own
restaurant, Yafa Hummus, in Tracy. As for Samira and Mohamed, they hope to retain a family feeling at their Lodi location. Samira emphasizes Yafa Hummus is a familyfriendly restaurant where the staff is always available to answer questions and provide consistent service. “Our main goal is to serve the community and make customers happy when they come into our place,” Samira says. “We want people to know how much we want to be here serving them and we hope to stay a long time.”.
