In fact, according to Susie Cruz, that’s the most important ingredient, and it’s exactly what the young business owner has created in Stockton with Edge Nutrition and Wellness Club. When Susie opened Edge about three years ago, she was the youngest female Latina business owner in Stockton at just twentythree years old. She envisioned a health club where people who

atmosphere to those around them,” she says. Living a fit lifestyle means celebrating the daily challenges that people overcome. Susie calls them “non-scale victories” and it’s one of her favorite things about running her business. “I’m my clients’ biggest cheerleader.” She gushes. It’s all about celebrating the small wins because being fit is a life-long process. It’s not about doing one big thing; it’s about making the right choices every day to get you where you want to be over time. “Edge is a great spot to meet others. odi local Aaron Sass’s lifelong love of skating led him to launch his own business handmaking custom longboards—an art, a hobby, and a business all wrapped into one. Since, Aaron has managed to establish a brand with a loyal following and is eager to share his love of longboards with Lodi and beyond. “Skateboarding is very nostalgic for me,” Aaron says. “I love what it stands for: individualism, creativity, personal expression, and it is just part of our American culture.” Searching for a new hobby during last summer’s COVID-19 lockdown, Aaron dusted off some hand-me-down woodworking tools, headed to the hardware store, and built his first board. “And it was horrible,” he recalls. “Well, what could I do now? Build another,

fixing the mistakes I made on the previous one. Slowly, failure after failure, things started to turn around.” When they did, he started posting his work on social media and quickly realized that the interest in having a handmade board is that they are each one-of-a-kind. Customers wanted to pick their own wood, help design the pattern, and see the board come to life from beginning to end. So, Aaron built his business—Pipe Dream Sk8 Co.—around this idea. For his customers, working with Aaron ensures not only that they cruise away on a longboard with a smooth ride, but also one

that is truly a unique piece of art. “I use different hardwoods like maple, walnut, and purpleheart. These woods are very durable and can withstand a good amount of pressure,” Aaron explains. But the choice of materials is also an aesthetic one: Aaron doesn’t use stains or paint on his boards. Instead, he creates patterns with the varying shades of natural purples, yellows, oranges, allowing the wood’s beauty to shine through in the final product. Over the last year, Aaron has made more than 75 custom longboard and has no intention of slowing.

ith the holiday season just around the corner, what could be more fun than lacing up your skates and hitting the ice? Skating is an extremely popular activity, and for good reason—it’s a great way to bond with family and friends, a good workout, and a perfect de-stressor. However, skating can also be daunting for newbies. But don’t panic! Whether you’ve never skated before, have ventured onto the ice a few times (but still cling to the wall for dear life), or already have some solid skating experience under your belt, the folks at Oak Park Ice Rink have you covered.

Each session includes eight lessons, skate rentals if needed, and eight free admissions to public sessions to use during the program to practice outside of class. Need a little extra motivation? “Just go out and give it a try,” encourages Derek. “Everybody’s a rookie once.”

Starting up again this fall, Oak Park’s “Learn to Skate” program is designed with all ages and ability levels in mind to fit every skater's needs. The eight-week program is comprised of four class levels: Snowplow Sam, an introductory course aimed at young skaters under six-years-old; Basic Skills, where skaters build a solid foundation through mastering eight stages of skills at their own pace; Free Skate, comprising of more advanced skating skills, spins, and jumps; and Adult, where adults of any skill level can learn how to skate and grow more confident on the ice. “Part of the program that is

SPOOKY SAN JOAQUIN NEW BOOK UNCOVERS GHOST STORIES FROM THE CALIFORNIA DELTA  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

ecret Filipina cults from Stockton in the early 1900s, the mysterious drowning of a beloved schoolteacher, a mysterious ghost aboard a vessel at the San Joaquin Yacht Club, a stabbing victim off the Byron Bethany Highway, tales based in fact and colored with fiction, and those stranger-than-fiction that can’t be explained. The San Joaquin Delta, stretching from San Joaquin to Contra Costa holds many secrets in its depths, both emerging from the deep waters and lurking in the shadows of nearby towns. To collect them all, local writers contributed to the anthology Ghost Stories From the San Joaquin Delta, a spooky series of stories that thrill with historic tragedies, fictionalized events, and real ghost stories, all with the Delta as their background.

THE LEGEND OF JIMMIE TORRES AND THE “DEAD MAN’S HAND” Once named Bacigalupe’s Bar in the early 1880s, Jim Torres bought the infamous saloon in Brentwood in 1888 and renamed it Torres’ Saloon & Ice House. What he didn’t know when he purchased the town relic was that it was within those walls he would be murdered while playing a hand of cards amongst friends. The perpetrator got away, rumored to have caught a train out of town before he could be apprehended. Jimmie’s hand at the time of his death was two black aces and two black eights, which has since become known as “Dead Man’s Hand” after Torres and a man named James Butler were both shot with the cards in their hands. Tales of Jimmie’s ghost linger, told by employees of the bar he once owned.

It’s still unclear whether Mae L’Heureux, Jimmie’s sister, committed suicide or was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time when a train struck her in Brentwood. Known around town as a resident of the swanky Hotel Brentwood, her ghost has been spotted by locals haunting the railroad at the end of Oak Street where she died, and ghostbusters claim to have found Mae’s ectoplasm at the original Hotel Brentwood location, which has since been turned into a Chevron.

The jury is still out on who slayed Becky Lindquidst, a marina owner in Knightsen. Details make her husband—who showed up to a friend’s covered in Becky’s blood and gun residue on his fingers—look guilty, but arrests have yet to be made.

There is no set process for selecting who will receive free orthodontic care, nor are there specific qualifications for patients requesting these services. Dr. Samra invites people to reach out (by calling the office or messaging

them on Instagram) so that the team can discuss the patients’ situation, dental and orthodontic needs, and determine if they’re a good fit for these free services. “These treatments typically last about two years, but this duration varies depending on the patient’s needs,” Dr. Mickey Samra explains. “It can take longer if dental treatments like cleaning and fillings are needed prior to getting braces. We work with likeminded dentists in the local community to help get this dental work completed.” Once any dental concerns are addressed, the team at Samra Orthodontics can get to work straightening smiles and changing lives. “There are a lot of tears on the day those braces finally come off,” Dr. Mickey Samra says, “both from happy patients and happy team members.”

or Stocktonians, Podesto’s Market & Deli is more than a grocery store—it’s a community staple. Many customers have been visiting the Lincoln Center market for decades, first as high schoolers grabbing sandwiches with their friends after school, and now bringing their own children, stopping in after work to pick up dinner fixings and maybe a baked good or two. “I have been going to Podesto’s for as long as I can remember,” shares Jamie Errecart, a longtime customer. “I would shop there with my mom when I was little and I have continued with my own family now. You walk in knowing most everyone who works there by name and they know mine...it’s a great feeling!” Another devoted customer, Amy Guidi, says shopping at Podesto’s helped her feel at home when she first moved to Stockton from Orange County in 1999. She quickly fell in love with the market's quaint, familial atmosphere. “I just thought it was the cutest place on earth,” Amy says. “I got to know the owners and the sons, and it was like home. If

I ever needed anything, they could get it for me. It was a community for me. I would see the same people there as I was making friends in Stockton.” Podesto’s has been charming the people of Stockton since it first opened in 1982, after a fire the year before forced the Podesto family to remodel the Don Quick grocery store they operated in Lincoln Center. When they reopened, they decided they wanted to do something new and different, inspired by specialty stores in Sacramento that sold gourmet and hard-to-find items. “We thought, ‘Why don't we do an upscale store in Stockton?’” explains Bernie Morgenstern, Podesto’s president, who owns and operates the business with his wife, Debbie. “We changed it to my in-laws’ family’s name and turned it into a more oldfashioned service counter, bakery, and deli.” The new market was a huge hit, and Podesto’s Market’s popularity has continued to grow ever since. Since first opening, the market has been remodeled three times and has doubled in size, expanding from a 15,000 square foot operation to 30,000 square feet. Customers rave about the store’s competitive prices, quality service, meat and seafood selection, and, of course, their famous Dutch crunch rolls. The business also routinely wins San Joaquin Magazine’s readervoted “Best of” categories for its deli sandwiches. The fan favorite? “Probably our tuna salad sandwich on Dutch crunch,” Bernie states without hesitation. “People love it. It’s a good combination, the tuna and the crunch.” When the pandemic hit Stockton in 2020, many businesses struggled to stay afloat throughout extended lockdowns and the subsequent recession, but Podesto’s continued to thrive. When distribution delays caused empty shelves in stores across the country, Bernie, Debbie, and the store’s other departmental managers sprang into action, calling different vendors and buying from new places to ensure their store remained as well-stocked as possible. And the community took notice. “COVID showcased our store,” Bernie says. “There were people that never came into our store, but when they were going to their regular neighborhood store and they ran out of toilet paper and paper towels, they came in here looking for that.” SJMAG.COM

“They literally floated Stockton,” says Amy. “They were the first people to get hand wipes. They stretched all of their outsources to get what we needed. We knew we could really depend on them.” Of course, fulfilling the needs of the community in such fraught times didn’t always come easily. “It’s been the most difficult year and a half in 40 years of me being in the grocery business,” Bernie shares. “But hopefully there are some positives that come out of it.” One of those unexpected positives was how much closer it made the staff—at least metaphorically. While the continued effects of the pandemic mean they’re still not hugging, Bernie says the crew shares regular fist bumps, a sign of the strong sense of camaraderie the

past year and a half has fostered in them. “My employees have been so loyal and dependable during this past year and a half. It touches my heart, how much they helped us,” Bernie expresses. As Stockton emerges from the pandemic, Bernie says the top priority for Podesto’s is to maintain a clean, safe shopping experience for customers. The team is also looking forward to bringing even more specialty items to their shelves and continuing to serve the community for many more years to come. “During the pandemic, we got an opportunity to serve so many new customers from all over Stockton. And it's been fantastic,” says Bernie. “We've got a lot of new, loyal customers, probably for life.”

BIKESHARE + ARTSHARE n Very bikeable, one of the best ways to enjoy the artwork in SJC is on two wheels. Lodi Cyclery offers more than one way to see it all with bike rentals at the downtown shop. Take it up a notch—and see more in a day—by trying out an e-bike to get around faster. Don’t want to stick to Lodi? For years, murals have decorated the sides of buildings, bringing color and flavor to the bustling downtown and surrounding streets. n If you’re looking for more than home décor, Lincoln Center is the other go-to destination for shopping. The outdoor mall has high end fashions, adorable undergarments, and some entertainment (escape room, anyone?) n Lunch at Mimosa’s Gourmet, which offers more than that gargantuan mimosa you’ve seen patrons sipping on the corner of School and Elm streets. Most are settled into Lodi’s wine trail, which stretches to Acampo and encompasses wineries with many tricks and talents beyond the notable zinfandels produced in the region. If you’re interested in deep red Italian varietals and a lush garden to sprawl out on, Macchia, which carefully selects their grapes from California’s most prestigious wine growing regions and vineyards, celebrates with unique notes imparted in each wine. Their “Adventurous” Zinfandel, “Righteous” Barbera, and “Dangerous” Port benefit from grapes grown in a particularly spicy vineyard, for example. This stringent selection process ensures only the best grapes are used for each of their renowned varietals and make for an excellent drinking experience. At Oak Farm Vineyards, the grounds are like a sanctuary transporting you far away from the everyday hustle and bustle. The memories created here are as rich as the award-winning wine poured

at the Instagram-worthy tasting bar and on the picturesque patio. The varied experiences cater to both those who stop in for a casual glass of wine on a trip around the Lodi AVA and those after a more involved tasting, available by reservation. If you’re hungry, a small menu of cheese, charcuterie, and other small snack items is available. Mettler Vineyard boasts some of Lodi’s best wine—and most well distributed. Easy to find not just locally but even in neighboring states, a casual experience inside the gorgeous tasting room will make you feel like royalty as every touch inside suggests you’re sipping at one of the state’s most prestigious vineyards. Located just outside of town is Ironstone Vineyards. In Murphy’s—about an hour from Lodi—the sprawling estate is prime for picnics, concerts, events, private tastings, dinners, and more. Marvel in the details from the imported bar (that came by ship from New York and dates back to the 1800s) to the towering stone fireplace before diving into a lineup of reds, whites, and rosés. Offering both function and longevity, many locals choose rocks to complete a variety of projects. “Our customers use rock in their garden beds, to create borders and pathways, and as statement pieces,” says Maggie Rogers from Element Landscape Materials, Inc. in Stockton. “In many cases, customers will buy a combination of river rock, crushed rock, and large boulders, all to serve different functions in the yard.” Currently top sellers at Element include river rock/pebbles and decomposed granite. These two products both offer good ground cover that lasts longer than mulch and sand, which often has to be replaced year over year. In addition, decomposed granite can also be used to create cost-effective pathways and provide decorative ways to surround firepits and cover high foot traffic areas. Many customers choose it because of its diversity, coming in many colors, including

natural stone and brighter options to add a pop of color to your space. River rock better replaces grass, used often for flower beds and as borders around other plants and backyard elements. “Like

TURNING IT ON DEITRA KENOLY ILLUMINATES STOCKTON WITH INSIDE OUT LIGHTING & DECOR  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD

hen Deitra Kenoly was just a kid growing up in Stockton she dreamed of owning her own business. “Once the opportunity presented itself, I set out to pursue my passion,” she says. With the goal of not only fulfilling her own destiny but also serving her community, Deitra settled on a home décor store specializing in lighting fixtures named Inside Out Lighting & Decor (a decision she came to easily after realizing a lack of local options, and prior knowledge of the inventory from a previous parttime job). A Stockton native herself, Deitra chose to open the shop—on February 24—in her hometown and serve the same community of individuals she has grown to love during her 39-year career—that she retired from in 2020—as the president and publisher of the Stockton Record. “I’ve always had an eye for design so I knew home décor was where I wanted to be,” Deitra says. “And since Stockton hasn’t had a lighting store in several years, lighting would be my primary product.” The shop sets itself apart from other home décor stores in the area by focusing on lighting (although furniture, small décor items, mirrors, and more are available for sale, too). It is also important for Deitra to keep her inventory both distinct and of high quality so customers can trust what they purchase from Inside Out. In addition to items sourced from trade shows, which Deitra frequents with her husband Quincy, she also carries sculptures from Zimbabwe and South Africa that offer a cultural component to the store not found just anywhere. “My aesthetic is more modern, which is different than what is currently being offered in our market,” Deitra says. But the goal isn’t to set herself apart from other stores so much as to focus on her niche and give the community more variety when it comes to lighting and home décor needs. “I believe

there’s room in this market to satisfy various design styles and in doing so we keep more of our tax dollars in our community.” Ultimately, the choice is yours on what to purchase, but if you’re asking Deitra for her advice: go bold. “Lighting can make or break a space,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to go big… if your area allows.” Choose between a crystal chandelier in the foyer, a large metal pendant illuminating the bathtub, or a linear design above the dining room table. “Whatever your style, allow your lighting to bring the right type of drama to your room.”

Gardeners have always dreamed about a weed-free garden. For decades, the solution has been to turn to chemical weed killers, but more and more gardeners are taking notice of the harsh side effects. Whether it’s your own flowers that are collateral damage or you’ve noticed a sharp decrease in bee and other pollinator activity in your garden, it’s time to put down the chemical weedkiller and opt for a more environmentally friendly solution. Organic weed control is an approach that aims at preventing weeds before they start. A healthy lawn can easily out compete weeds, choking them off before they have a chance to get their roots in. A dry or dying lawn leaves room for weeds to grow and the presence of certain types of weeds can indicate a soil deficiency or other underlying problems. Once addressed, you’ll have a better looking, healthier lawn where there’s less room for weeds to grow. Organic weed killers are more readily available than ever and will do away with straggling weeds. OID-19 has been ravaging the nation for a year and a half now, and while many recover from the disease with zero to little long-term effects, others are dealing with a diagnosis of Long COVID. Long COVID has many names—long haul COVID, chronic COVID, post COVID conditions, or even post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. The CDC defines this phenomenon as health problems that linger for four weeks or more after a COVID-19 diagnoses. “So, if one contracts COVID and still has symptoms, then it could be long COVID,” says Dr. Ramin Manshadi, founder and president of Manshadi Heart institute, Inc. Long COVID can include joint pain, change in taste and smell, and problems in memory and concentration, commonly referred to as brain fog. For Dr. Manshadi, symptoms affecting the heart are his specialty, and he says anything lasting past 12 weeks requires a specialist’s attention. Heart-related symptoms include shortness of breath, heart palpation’s and chest pains. “Anyone is susceptible to this, but it may be more common in middle aged people,” Dr. Manshadi notes. While one prominent study suggests those who experienced a more serious case of COVID-19 are more likely to experience long COVID, other studies suggest no correlation at all, meaning long COVID, much like severe illness and death with COVID-19, simply strikes when it strikes. “The cause is unknown. It could be over active immune system affecting many organs; or it can be small viruses staying dormant and reactivating later like herpes virus,” Dr. Manshadi says. The good news is that most do get

better and symptoms go away over a few months. Because there are no solid treatments for long COVID-related heart problems, cardiologists use diagnostic tests to determine how severe the effect is on the heart. Tests such as an EKG, echocardiogram, blood test, or even cardiac MRI can help your doctor determine if myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle cells) is of concern. Some preliminary studies have also suggested that getting the vaccine can

help long COVID. “We are learning more about this as we gather more data,” Dr. Manshadi says.

PREVENT and REMOVE WARTS

common that over 50% of people have been exposed to HPV at some point in their life,” says Dr. Amin Esfahani of Lux Dermatology in Stockton and Manteca. “However, not every person who is exposed to the virus develops a wart.” While there is no surefire way to avoid exposure, you can reduce the risk. Avoid biting your nails and picking at hangnails, touching other people’s warts, and scratching or shaving existing warts. “The most important way to avoid infection with high-risk HPV strains is through vaccination,” Dr. Esfahani says. “Current scientific evidence shows that HPV vaccination has significantly reduced the risk of developing genital warts and HPV-related cancers, and clinical experience suggests that it can help reduce the burden of common warts.”

TREATMENT

Most warts will disappear on their own within two years, but there are many over-the-counter wart treatments that can potentially speed up the process. “Over-thecounter treatments can be an effective means of treating small common or plantar warts. Generally, treatments containing salicylic acid are very effective. Covering plantar warts with Duct tape can be helpful,” says Dr. Esfahani. “You should never cut or pick off your wart. This habit can lead to the wart spreading or enlarging.” If you are unsure what will be the best option for removing your wart or you have several warts, painful warts, genital warts, or warts that are growing larger or faster than expected (which could be a sign you’ve mistaken a skin cancer for a wart), schedule an appointment with Dr. Esfahani. He can recommend an array of treatment options including surgery, cryotherapy (freezing), immunotherapy, and other prescription grade creams and solutions.

reast cancer is the second most common form of cancer for women in the United States (just after skin cancer) with one in eight women developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Luckily, the number of breast cancer deaths has been dropping by approximately one percent each year for more than a decade thanks to advancements in treatment options, increased awareness, and early detection.

PREVENTING BREAST CANCER

“There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. Some risk factors such as age, sex, and family history, cannot be changed,” says Kaiser Permanente Central Valley’s Megumi Tomita, MD, MHA, assistant physician in chief, medical subspecialities. “However, there are some personal behaviors within our control that may lower breast cancer risk. This includes getting to and maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, and avoiding or limiting alcohol.” A diet high in vegetables and low in fatty foods may lessen your chances of developing breast cancer and some studies suggest that breastfeeding for at least a year can also decrease the risk. Prolonged exposure to estrogen treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or postmenopausal hormone therapy, however, can put you at increased risk, especially if you continue treatment after the age of 60. Dr. Tomita recommends discussing the risks and benefits of hormone therapy with your doctor.

EARLY DETECTION

Because you cannot completely eliminate the possibility of developing breast cancer, it is important to be aware of any changes in your breasts and have regular screenings to catch any signs of cancer early. “Self-breast exams should never take the place of screening tests, because screening may detect breast cancer before symptoms, such as a lump, may present,” Dr. Tomita adds. “With that said, it is important for women to be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel so they can report any changes to their healthcare provider right away.” At Kaiser Permanente women in their 40s can make an appointment for a mammogram, though these early screenings are usually only recommended for women at high risk of developing breast cancer. Between the ages of 50 and 74, mammograms are recommended every two years. “The ultimate impact of delaying a mammogram is different for every person. However, if cancer goes

undetected, it’s possible that a delay in being diagnosed can lead to an advanced stage of disease,” Dr. Tomita says. She encourages patients not to put off routine screenings even amid ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

eart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States, accounting for one in four deaths and claiming a life every 36 seconds. As an interventional cardiologist with Stockton Cardiology Medical Group, Dr. Jignesh A. Patel, MD specializes in treating a variety of cardiovascular disorders including heart attacks and peripheral artery disease requiring balloons or stents, heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias, amongst others. However, he stresses that many of his patients would never have developed heart disease if they had committed to preventative measures and developed heart-healthy habits.

can give condensation lead to more fogging. If that doesn’t help, ask your optometrist to adjust your frames. Over time frames can lose their shape, causing your glasses to slip down your nose – which is annoying enough on its own and even more so if it’s leading to fogged lenses.

CALL IN THE BIG GUNS

OVID-19 might not target your eyes, but with more frequent mask-wearing, glasses-wearers are facing a foggy outlook. Understanding why your glasses fog up is the first clue to understanding how to prevent it—and the science is pretty simple. When hot air comes in contact with a cold surface, it can create condensation. This is exactly what’s happening with your mask as well: your breath, which is usually hotter than the surrounding air, escapes the top of your mask, hits your glasses, and— voila!—foggy lenses. So, how can you avoid it?

IN A PINCH

First things first, keep the air from escaping from the top of your mask by making the most of that built-in nose wire. Cheaper masks tend to have a flimsy nose wire or none at all, allowing air to escape through the top of the mask. Glasses-wearers should opt for a mask that has a thicker and sturdier nose wire that will hold its shape and help keep air from escaping.

MAKE SURE YOUR MASK FITS

After nearly two years of COVID-19, you’ve probably noticed that some masks are a better fit than others, but if you’re still having trouble with foggy glasses, take another look at how your masks fit your face. If your mask is too large, gaps at the top will allow air to escape. If the mask is too small, it is possible it is too tight across your chin, causing it to slip down your nose or pull away from your face, especially while talking, again leading to fog.

he mountains in Yosemite National Park stretch high above the clouds, kissing the skies while creating iconic and overwhelming landscapes the rest of the world can’t duplicate. The granite cliffs of Half Dome are only part of the park’s picturesque beauty, which also features ancient sequoia trees and abundant waterfalls. 2020 marked Yosemite National Park’s 130th anniversary, but with not many welcomed to visit during the shut downs and travel hushed, 2021 has become the year to celebrate this landmark and its rich history. The biggest question before stepping foot into Yosemite National Park is where to hike. Each season brings its own specialties, and in October you’ll be scrambling to find the best views available for the season. It may be a bit late to tackle some of the biggest hikes, but it’s also a good time for enjoying the park when it isn’t scorching hot either. Our top pick for an October visit is Vernal Fall. This challenging hike offers several stopping points so those of all skill levels can make it their own—1.6 miles roundtrip takes you to the base of the falls where a nearly ever-present rainbow transports hikers to a faraway paradise while a 2.4-mile roundtrip that includes a strenuous rock staircase will get you to the top of the waterfall, which is still flowing into fall unlike most in the park that have dried up. For those really itching to go the distance, a 5.4-mile roundtrip hike will get you all of the way to Nevada Fall. For those who have considered hiking the infamous half dome, this is a good warm up for the trip as it takes the same route in the beginning to get there so you’ll have an idea what you’re in for if you decide to go the distance one day. It also offers

Many choose springtime to visit Yosemite Valley, but the truth is, October is one of the best months to visit the National Park. Some of the waterfalls have dried up come October, but aside from that October offers milder weather, smaller crowds, and most of the trails remain open so you have plenty of choices on where to hike. Coming before 2022 also has its perks, as the Evergreen Lodge is celebrating its centennial event throughout 2021. spectacular views of the park in several places, including at the top of the falls where visitors like to stretch out and relax before starting the grueling descent down those oversized stone steps. Other hikes that don’t lose their magic in fall are Mirror Lake, a 2-mile roundtrip with views of Mt. Watkins and Half Dome that dries up in the summer and is jokingly referred to as Mirror Meadow until spring and Valley Loop Trail, an 11 mile stretch that offers a good sampling of Yosemite as you pass Lower Yosemite Fall, Three Brothers, and El Capitan. To take in the sequoia trees in fall, opt for the 2.5-mile paved Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias while Sentinel Dome and Taft Point burst with fall colors this time of year or walk through the Mariposa Grove, the largest collection of sequoia trees inside of the park and boasting two of the largest in the world.

WHERE TO STAY

There can be a lot of confusion surrounding where to stay when visiting the national park because Yosemite has several entrance points. Where you stay will dictate how you enter, but it’s also important to take note of how far some lodging is from any park entrance (especially if entrances are closed due to weather, construction, or for other reasons). Mariposa is a top choice when it comes to outside-of-the-park lodging. Just about 30 minutes from a park entrance, it’s easy for navigating your way around the valley and offers some charms of its own. Nearby, Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort offers the surroundings you’d likely expect from a Yosemite vacation.

You get to enjoy the outdoor ambiance without roughing it, instead staying in wellappointed cabins with electricity and running water. Plus the onsite restaurant, June Bug Café, brings in visitors from all over with its homecooked meals served in a mess hall environment. 6979A CA-140, Midpines Through another entrance you’ll be able to access Yosemite National Park even faster when staying at the Evergreen Lodge. Located up a windy road, the Evergreen Lodge feels like summer camp for families or couples. In addition to cozy cabins, there is a

There is even a nightly s’mores hour hosted by the lodge. If you stay at Evergreen Lodge, don’t miss the chance to eat at the Tavern. The facility stays open late, and while you can eat inside, we recommend grabbing a seat on a picnic table or sitting underneath the covered patio. The Fried Cauliflower & Brussels Sprout makes you feel like you’re eating something very healthy, but the flavor doesn’t lack, accompanied by a Humboldt Fog goat cheese and lime gremolata. Here, we couldn’t skip the Grilled Scottish Salmon (which is gluten free) served with grilled kale and a watermelon radish sunchoke salad. And you shouldn’t leave without diving into dessert: think Flourless Chocolate Torte served with a raspberry coulis and mint or an Uptown New York Cheesecake with caramel sauce and fresh berries. To celebrate the centennial, Evergreen Lodge has added some activities, as well. Whether you’re jonesing for an extra glass of vino after a day of tasting or simply want a glass after work, most of the Lodi tasting rooms close their doors at 4 or 5 PM. So where do you go when you want a glass after hours? We searched out some options for those night cap cravings that don’t involve plopping down at a restaurant and have compiled a short list below.

WOODBRIDGE UNCORKED

This chic bar located on the small stretch of hip eateries in Woodbridge is open late every night of the week. On MondaysThursdays, the bar closes at 8 PM, while on Fridays and Saturdays the party goes until 10 PM. Even on Sundays you can grab a glass of vino—or a bottle— from one of many offerings until 6 PM while seated at a table with food from nearby or making new friends at the bar.

On select nights, Mettler hosts live music after hours with options for estate vino. On Friday nights, Barsetti Vineyards in Galt keeps the lights on until 8 PM. Friday is the night to head over to Viaggio, as well, when it stays open until 8:30 PM. Keep in mind, offerings often change, so other wineries may be getting in on the late-night trend, too. You’ll just have to call ahead to ask about hours.

remember walking into my very first personal cheffing client’s kitchen and practically drooling over her gorgeous kitchen, complete with smooth granite countertops that wrapped the entire room. I set down the groceries I had purchased from the local health foods market and arranged the day’s ingredients for a balsamic roasted beef bourguignon, roasted butternut squash, and a crispy and colorful salad when my client walked in looking under the weather. “I had my wisdom teeth removed,” she said still holding the ice against her face, “All of them at once, what was I thinking? I can’t eat any of this.” Setting down my chef’s knife, we stood there and looked at all of the food. “I’ll puree it!” I said, grabbing the blender and a carton of chicken stock from the pantry. Smooth and creamy, thick and velvety, pureeing a tray of roasted butternut squash creates an ultra-comforting dining experience, even for those who didn’t just undergo dental surgery.

Often, we assume to achieve a smooth and creamy soup we need use lots of heavy whipping cream, but not so. Read on for tips on blending your own creamy soup, including the Velvety Butternut Squash Soup from that day.

1.Veggies such as butternut squash, sweet potato, and zucchini are excellent for pureeing into soups. 2. Many ethnic dishes use nuts and seeds to make soups extra creamy. Think natural peanut, almond, or cashew butter or tahini (ground sesame seeds). A heaping spoonful of nut and seed butter will add a smooth and hearty texture to soups. 3. A high-speed blender such as a Vitamix really does create a velvety texture. 4. Don’t limit soups to only veggies. Add in cooked meats to create a complete meal comprised of protein, fiber, and fat.

Add coconut oil or ghee to large stock pot on medium-low heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic and season with sea salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes, sautéing until soft, about 5-7 minutes. Add chopped butternut squash, Granny Smith apple, and red bell pepper, and continue to sauté for another five minutes. Add 2 cups of chicken stock or bone broth and reduce heat to a simmer until veggies are soft, about 1015 minutes. Turn off heat and transfer to high-speed blender (or blend directly in the stock pot with an immersion blender) and blend until creamy, adding more stock/broth until it reaches desired consistency. Serve in your favorite soup bowls and garnish with fresh thyme, red pepper flakes, and pistachios.

The Quesabirria is gracing menus all over SJ county and we’re sharing our top three tacos for your eating enjoyment. But what exactly is it? Quesabirria is a compound word combining everyone’s favorite queso, cheese, and birria—the traditional Mexican stew. It’s a delicious cross between a quesadilla and a taco, grilled on a flattop to perfection, and served with a rich consommé or beef broth. The result? A savory, satisfying taco trend that we pray is here to stay.

For October, we are whipping up three mouth-watering recipes to satisfy any sweet tooth. Choose between Traditional Chocolate Chunk Cookies with ooey, gooey melted chocolate, Grain-Free Ginger Molasses Cookies to embrace the Fall season, and the quickest three-Ingredient Keto Peanut Butter Cookies to keep you on track with your health goals this season—or, you know, make them all.

3-INGREDIENT KETO PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES Makes 8

INGREDIENTS 1 large egg 1 c. natural peanut butter with salt ½ c. erythritol sweetener

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Whisk egg in mixing bowl and stir in peanut butter and erythritol until well-combined. Scoop heaping tablespoons and arrange on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake in oven for 7-9 minutes, or until cookies are set on the edges but creamy in the middle. Allow to cool before serving with optional peanut butter drizzled on top.

GRAIN-FREE GINGER MOLASSES COOKIES Makes 12

INGREDIENTS:

TRADITIONAL CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIES

12 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted 1 c. dark brown sugar ¼ c. organic blackstrap molasses 2 large eggs 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 ¼ c. cassava flour 1 ¼ tsp. baking soda 1 ½ tsp. ground ginger 1 tsp. ground cloves 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ¼ tsp. allspice ½ tsp. sea salt ¼ c. course sugar for rolling

DIRECTIONS: Mix melted butter and dark brown sugar with electric hand-mixer or in the bowl of a stand-mixer with the paddle attachment for 10 seconds. Add molasses and continue mixing until well-combined. Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix for 30 seconds. Mix cassava flour, baking soda, spices, and sea salt in separate bowl. Slowly add flour mixture to wet mixture and mix on low speed until dough forms, being careful to not overmix. Allow cookie dough to chill in the fridge for at least 6 hours or overnight. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Roll tablespoons of dough in hands to form balls, then roll in course sugar. Place balls on baking tray about 2” apart and bake for 8 minutes or until cracks form. Remove from oven and allow to cool before serving. Repeat with extra dough or store remaining dough in freezer for up to three months.

Makes 6 large cookies

INGREDIENTS: 1 c. unsalted butter, cold and cubed ½ c. dark brown sugar ¼ c. granulated sugar 1 large egg ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/3 c. all-purpose flour ½ tsp. corn starch ¼ tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. sea salt ½ c. semi-sweet chocolate chunks

DIRECTIONS: Cream butter and sugars with electric hand-mixer or in the bowl of a standmixer with paddle attachment until fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Add flour, corn starch, baking soda, and sea salt and gently mix, scraping the sides as needed. Gently fold in chocolate chunks, saving a small handful to use later. Divide into 6 large discs about ½” thick and place on baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 12 minutes, then remove from oven and carefully place the remaining chocolate chunks on top of the cookies. Continue baking for 3-4 minutes, remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving. SJMAG.COM
