LINDSEY & STEPHEN Rabbitt MAY 21, 2016, THE RIVER MILL

Lindsey and Stephen—Seattle residents, but Northern California natives—are a model couple for those with roots planted outside of their hometown. They persevered through their struggles with smiles as they planned a wedding 1,000 miles away. “We wanted to get married close to home,” Lindsey says, “for the vibe we were going for, River Mill was the perfect fit.”

Lindsey and Stephen’s relationship spans state borders, beginning with the city by the bay, where the couple met as co-workers at Nordstrom in San Francisco. “We saw each other at work first, and then bumped into each other at a baseball game.” Lindsey continues. “Eventually we started talking about our passions and how much we love baseball. And soon after we had our first date at a Giants' game.”   Their love for the all-American game was perfect opportunity for Stephen to plan his next move, in 2014, at the Giants’ World Series.   Lindsey recalls Stephen eagerly pushing the idea to make the trip from their current city, Seattle, to California for the game. Hesitant, Lindsey agreed to Stephen’s spontaneous fourteen-hour drive, unaware of his secret plot.   Stephen diligently planned his proposal—even chronologically chatting about their past moments at AT&T park over the years—and following the stroll down memory lane was the big question.   The Seattle couple had just over a year to plan the California wedding. Looking back, the couple says the process was relatively easy thanks to their venue, The River Mill, which took care of many details.   “Walking down the aisle, I had this sense of calmness that I didn’t have six weeks before," Lindsey continues. "Once you are there and you see him, it doesn’t matter anymore if you’re inside or outside, or who is there or not there, and it all works out.” 48

DIANA & AARONOlson MAY 7, 2016, BARE RANCH

Diana and Aaron, a bay area couple with roots in the Central Valley, began their romance at the tender age of 23.    Diana was working in marketing for an online dating site and, while doing research, came across a profile that caught her eye. “I noticed Aaron. I thought he had a really cute profile and seemed really funny, and thought I’d reach out to him,” she recalls. “We met up for burgers near my house in San Francisco and that was it from there.”   Aaron planned an April Fool’s proposal, except the proposal was anything but. Di50

ana remembers the day perfectly; as she packed for a Dominican Republic vacation the two had planned together. But, Aaron had much more than packing in mind. “He said, ‘let’s go to lunch,’” Diana recalls. “Then we ended up going to the beach, and he proposed saying, ‘This is not an April Fool’s joke!"'   Over the next year, the couple planned a San Joaquin wedding and tied the knot locally. Reminiscing about their special day, the bride has a tip for other ladies preparing to walk down the aisle: “Don’t stress about the little details, think about the bigger picture!”

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

Meredith and Evan—a devout, fun, and easy-going couple—found love as they bonded over music, faith, and, eventually, the remodeling of their vintage home in Virginia.   The young couple met in college while Meredith was studying to be a nurse. “I was at a coffee shop, reciting stuff out loud for a test,” she continues. “He overheard, came over, and started a conversation.”   Their first date was dinner at an underground pizza bar followed by a concert, and three years later Evan proposed.   “We were at our home in Virginia chipping paint and Evan kept trying to convince me to throw in the towel, saying, ‘let’s just stop for tonight,’ but I was diligent and wanted to finish,”’ Meredith explains.   Later that evening, some friends stopped over, convincing Meredith to call it quits. The two had planned on going out to dinner, but ended up overlooking the mountains— all a part of Evan’s plan. While enjoying the view, Evan pulled out a box and champagne as he began to tell Meredith how much she meant to him, and how God had brought them

together. He then kneeled and proposed.   With family in the Central Valley, the couple planned a San Joaquin wedding as Meredith had her family’s comfort in mind. Meredith enjoyed every second of her special day, but one in particular took the cake. “We had a prayer time in the middle of the ceremony, my cousins sang, and we all prayed together,” she says of her special moment.

NICOLLETTE & PHILLIP

Yacovetti

MAY 7, 2016, THE DOUBLE TREE BY HILTON

Nicollette and Phillip’s romance dawned when a friend of Phillip’s set them up. They had their first date at a coffee shop, which turned into a long chat that went until closing time.   “I remember as I was driving, I just had a pit in my stomach. I was so nervous and even jokingly told him that I debated turning around and going home,” Nicollette says, “I’m so thankful that I didn’t do that!”   Before their engagement, the couple only saw each other on Fridays for a few hours due to their long distance relationship between Vallejo and Modesto.   Phillip decided to take their relationship to the next step while on a trip to Capitola during a walk along the beach. “We walked to a small cove where Phillip got down on one knee with our puppy in one hand and a ring in the other,” Nicollette recalls. “As he pulled the ring out, the puppy tried to eat the ring, and at one point it was even in his mouth!”   “I couldn’t believe that I was engaged to marry the man of my dreams,” Nicollette says. With the big day approaching, the couple began feelings anxious and overwhelmed, wanting everything to go as planned and hoping their guests would enjoy the day.   Emotions were only intensified when the groom saw his bride in her dress. “I felt very proud that all of the people in my life got to see how beautiful my bride was,” Phillip says.

JESSICA & MICHAEL Cabrera APRIL 2, 2016, THE DOUBLE TREE BY HILTON

Jessica and Michael met in college while enrolled in an EMT course at Modesto Junior College. “Our first date was the day before Halloween, so Michael took me to dinner and then we watched a scary movie at his place. We are both big movie buffs,” Jessica explains.   The couple remained very busy during their relationship as they attempted 56

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

to succeed in their careers, but agreed on getting married someday after they both found more stability.   Someday happened during a romantic evening that the groom planned at his parents’ home. “He had strung up mason jars with candles up in his parent’s big backyard," Jessica recalls. "He had the fire pit lit and music playing. He took me into the backyard and asked me to dance and then

he proposed. I was so excited. And so suprised, that I didn’t dress up or put makeup on,” Jessica says with a laugh.   The bride arranged a year-and-a-half long engagement so she would have ample time to get everything in order. “I was so excited to see him for the first time at the wedding. He looked so handsome and I was ready to start our new life together,” she adds.

ADRIANNA & TONY Reyes MAY 29, 2016, ELKHORN BANQUET HALL

Adrianna and Tony crossed paths at the age of 20 and 21. Tony attended Adrianna’s 21st birthday with a mutual friend and the two ended up spending the whole night together. As Adrianna explains, their first real date was more intimate. “We went out for the typical movie and dinner date—but we didn’t even watch the movie. We were talking the entire time."   The groom planned his proposal in secret, with the help of his and Adrianna’s family, while Adrianna and some of his family went shopping. “Tony isn’t the type to shop without me. We were in the MAC store and he told me that he would be right back,” she says. The groom had purposefully left Adrianna in the mall to go purchase the engagement ring with his family.   Later, they went out to watch fireworks in downtown Stockton for the Fourth of 58

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

July, and Tony insisted Adrianna have her family join them. Unknowing of his plot, Adrianna was surprised. “We were sitting on the grass. My family and his family were all together enjoying the fireworks, I was holding my little brother, then I felt a little tap on my shoulder. My eyes were still glued to the fireworks, I responded to Tony, then looked on my right side and he was down on one knee.”   But the surprises were not over. The initial engagement period was cut short as the couple became pregnant and decided to plan their wedding for an earlier date.   “When Tony and I were having our first dance, we said that no matter where life takes us, good or bad, we would get through any situation and that we would be such good parents!” the bride says, “We always called ourselves the dream team and we aren’t going anywhere but the top!”

JESSICA KNOX & BRENT Jenson MAY 21, 2016, OAK FARM VINEYARDS

Time was no factor for couple Jessica and Brent. They were engaged just six months after their first date, that consisted of chatting over frozen yogurt, which turned into a walk in the park, and then dinner.   On Christmas day, Brent proposed. “He and my sister planned the whole thing,” Jessica explains. “There was an ornament on the tree that said ‘Will you marry me?’ and he proposed in front of my whole family.”

60

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

Looking back on their wedding day, Brent explains, with a smile in his voice, how he felt in awe. Hearing only amazing things about Jessica’s dress for months, when the moment came, Brent says he found it hard to focus on anything else.   The blushing bride, also enchanted by her soon-to-be husband, says, “I didn’t see anything except him. Once I got up there, I was so lost in the moment, I kind of stumbled over my vows.” Enamored and in love, Jessica and Brent describe their wedding as magical and perfect.

SALWA & DOUG Bojack JUNE 18, 2016, HUTCHINS STREET SQUARE

Salwa and Doug first set eyes on each other while studying law at UC Davis. “Salwa was a year ahead of me and was actually the class tutor for one of my classes. But we didn’t start dating until after the course was over,” Doug says.   Though the two weren’t looking for love, they were, however, looking for someone to share life’s adventures with—which was exactly what they found. The college couple took trips and spent breaks together, and endlessly supported one another during their relentless job hunts in the law field.   Being a very laid-back couple, they had a very

62

casual and informal proposal, as it was more of a mutual agreement. “Salwa jokingly asked if we should just set a date and I said we should, and that’s when we realized that we were both ready and the time was right,” the groom reminisces.   Salwa and Doug planned their perfect wedding in a short six months. The bride did the majority of the planning herself and used a trusty spreadsheet template she found to guide her organization.   “I actually cried when Salwa came through the church doors that afternoon. She looked radiant and I could see how happy she was as her father walked her down the aisle,” Doug says.

MAGGIE & EJRogers OCTOBER 24, 2015, MORRIS CHAPEL

Faith can be a laborious and daunting journey, but for Maggie and EJ, it was the staple and glue of their love. Their first date was met with hesitation as they share a 10-year age gap. “I told him we would go somewhere casual for a drink. He picked me up and took me to El Ranchito in Riverbank…By the end of the date we both knew we were interested in getting to know each other more,” Maggie says.   Maggie and EJ spent every moment they could together, though they recall it being tough at times while Maggie was in nursing school and EJ was running his own business. Despite the hurdles, they connected on nearly every level. Maggie began expressing her desire to get married in a Catholic church, and enthralled with each other, they initiated the confirmation process with their church.   EJ began devising a creative scheme to propose, and it was anything, but ordinary. He wanted to ask Maggie to be his wife at their church, but he had to think of a way to get her there. Diligent in his plan, EJ constructed an emotional conversation to upset Maggie, hoping she would want to go pray. His plot was successful. They went to the church and were met with lustrous candle light. They intimately prayed together and then EJ proposed. “After feeling so upset, it was hard for me to believe that something so perfect was happening. Of course I said yes,” Maggie says.   Looking back, they both miss the wedding planning, even though it was unenjoyable at times. Maggie says her wedding day was very emotional and she remembers fighting back tears walking down the aisle, but it was “a moment we both remember vividly and cherish.”

TARAH & DILLON Clark JUNE 12, 2016, THE RESERVE AT SPANOS PARK

Sometimes a simple conversation is all it takes to find your soulmate. For Stockton couple Tarah and Dillon, a few kind words and an intimate chat by the water was all it took for these young newlyweds to find each other.   “We went and sat by the water at the Delta and talked about life. I was only 18 at the time,” Tarah says. “Then we went on a few dates and have been together ever since.” 66

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

In love, Dillon proposed a year into their relationship, purchasing the ring just hours before the act. “He said he wanted to spend forever with me and proposed with a bunch of friends around,” Tarah says. With a five-year engagement, the couple had time to plan their perfect wedding and recall the event as fairly easy.   Many of the services were provided by the venue, allowing for less stressful plan-

ning. The couple also chose to do many of the smaller details themselves, such as flowers and arrangements, and also recruited a friend for photography.   “My favorite moment was when he read his vows. I was pretty shocked by what he wrote because he’s not a very romantic person,” she says. “They were very heartfelt.”

ASHLEY & MATTHEW Langford SEPTEMBER 5, 2015, STOCKTON GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

Matthew and Ashley’s story began in highschool, though they were only acquaintances. It wasn’t until years later that they met again through friends. “We had so much in common and we both kind of knew this was it,” says Ashley in regards to their first date.   Matthew made it a point to make his proposal extra special by including family and incorporating traditions from Ashley’s childhood.   Every year, Ashley and her family would go to Apple Hill to cut a Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. But, as an adult, responsibility caught up with her and she missed the tradition for many years. 68

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

Matthew took advantage of the first time in many years that Ashley and her family were able to reconnect at Apple Hill. “He had my mom place the ring in a tree,” Ashley says, “And he got down on one knee, it was really great.”   The couple decided on an extravagant black-tie wedding with over 200 guests. Thinking about her favorite moment of the day—the bride laughs recalling their introduction as husband and wife—when Matthew spontaneously busted out dancing and slapped her on the butt. “The photographer caught it perfectly,” Ashley says of the memorable and fun moment.

APRIL & GEORGE Dias MAY 28, 2016, UNIVERSITY PLAZA WATERFRONT HOTEL

April and George have a fairy tale story that began with a blind date. One of April’s hospital coworkers, “asked if I was single, and if I wanted to meet their uncle,” she explains. “After two weeks of talking, we met and we have been together since."   It wasn’t until Christmas Eve of 2014 that they made their forever official.   “I was not expecting it—we were opening all our gifts and he asked me to close my eyes," April remembers. "When I opened them he had a gift box, and right away I knew what it was. I had tears in my eyes and I was so excited,” she says.   Looking back on the big day, April says her most memorable moment was their first dance while George sang to her. 70

VERONICA & REY

Arquines

MAY 14, 2016, UNIVERSITY PLAZA WATERFRONT HOTEL Some say love conquers all, and this is absolutely true for Stockton couple Veronica and Rey. The couple had their ups and downs, tough times and smiles, but in the end their love overcame and was sealed with a kiss.    Veronica and Rey met in college at a social gathering, through mutual friends, where they chatted and enjoyed a beautiful beach sunset. And soon their first date followed.   Early into their relationship they were blessed with a son, and flash forward to New Years 2014, Veronica remembers Rey fumbling with a Cracker Jack Box. “He was always joking that he would propose when he found the perfect ring in a Cracker Jack box,” Veronica says. He then asked for Veronica to be his wife and, after a few minutes of tears, she said yes.   Veronica and Rey had an early summer wedding. In the midst of their special day, Veronica, appreciative of her friends and family, took a moment to watch them all enjoy themselves. “At that moment, all that didn’t go as planned didn’t matter anymore,” she says.

74

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

Everyone has heard the phrase ‘Love at First Sight,’ but for most people, these words are empty. This is not the case for newlyweds Crystal and Daniel, who have nurtured a blossoming romance for nearly 10 years.   The relationship began to unfold their first day of freshman year at Vacaville High School. “Daniel wasn’t necessarily looking for love at the age of 15, but rather looking for cute girls to talk to while I was looking for someone to help me pass Spanish,” Crystal says. Needless to say, they both found what they were looking for in school and in each other.   Over the years of college experiences, numerous Disneyland vacations, and tropical escapes, Crystal knew it was time and started subtly hinting to Daniel “about putting a ring on it.”   After asking Crystal’s dad for her hand, Daniel began planning the perfect way to ask Crystal to be his forever.   He thought, “what better way to propose than at our favorite place, during our favorite time of the year?”   With luminous Christmas lights gleaming and snow cascading around them in front of the Disneyland castle, Daniel popped the question.

In the midst of a twoyear engagement, Crystal and Daniel had a baby boy, and the wedding plans took a back seat. But five months later, “Running on Starbucks and adrenaline, I was enjoying my last day as a Lindner,” Crystal says.   Having such a rooted and lingering love, naturally, Crystal and Daniel were thinking the same at their first look.   Watching her fiancé wait at the end of the aisle with their newborn son in his arms, she thought, 'how did I get so lucky?'   “There is nothing that could make this moment better,” Daniel recalls. Except perhaps the next moment that made for their favorite memory.   “My dad handed me to Daniel during the ceremony. Excited, Daniel leaned in to kiss me, but stopped himself and we both giggled,” Crystal says.

BRITTANY & JOHN Gladman NOVEMBER 7, 2015, VIAGGIO ESTATE & WINERY

Brittany and John’s love was rooted and flourished over common ground. Both being teachers, they bonded quickly over similar lifestyles and careers.   Intimately connected, the proposal was exactly that. John coordinated his proposal plan with the help of Brittany’s family.

76

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

“He planned it at my parent’s farm in the barn with my favorite old horse,” Brittany remembers. “He set up lights, hearts, and a bunch of romantic décor," she continues. "My parents called me, asking that I come check on something at the barn. When I got there, my horse was in a stall with a sign that said, ‘I give you my permission.’ "

As Brittany explains, "It’s always been a joke that my horse was my first love".   The couple’s short, nine-month engagement led to surprisingly smooth planning, as they had a supportive bridal party and a wedding planner, who Brittany praises and credits for her low-stress attitude.

Stephanie and Andrew met on their first date at Mikasa Sushi in Tracy, a favorite restaurant of the bride’s. Ten months later, Andrew proposed. “It was magical," Stephanie continues.   "We were in Disneyland with my family and Andrew had planned to do it on the Storybook Ride, my favorite ride, but it was closed. Then he thought that the fireworks would be the perfect time, only to have those canceled due to the weather. Finally, while taking a picture in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle Andrew popped the question,” Stephanie says.    78

Although the proposal did not start out as planned, the couple remembers how easy the wedding planning was at Wine & Roses. They followed every suggestion intended to make their special day as memorable as possible.   When their day approached, the couple chose   against first look photos because they wanted to see each other for the first time at the ceremony.   “Instead of tearing up, I just couldn’t help but smile. Ashley and Lucas are yet another love story from the digital age of online dating. These newlyweds thrive together not only as a couple, but also as a family, having had their first child just before Mother’s Day of last year. But looking back before the birth of their little family, the bride remembers how charming and chivalrous Lucas was on their first date. “He picked me up at my house and took me to my favorite Mikuni’s restaurant downtown. Then we walked up and down the streets of Old Town Sacramento, talking. He opened the 80

car door for me and was such a gentleman. And still is today,” she adds. The couple enjoyed two years together before Lucas proposed, and they embarked on a 13-month engagement. “He proposed on my first Mother’s Day, as we just had a baby boy. He made a photo book with pictures of our family in it, and the last page was a picture of the ring that had a caption saying, ‘Daddy and I would love if you said yes.’ I dropped the book to see my husband down on his knee with our son in one arm and the ring in the other,” the bride says.

PERFECT That POSE A HOW-TO GUIDE ON POSING FOR YOUR BODY TYPE  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Your wedding photographs will likely be second to only your memories when it comes to souvenirs from your wedding day. Make sure they represent the best you with these pro tips for how to pose for your body type.

PETITE

If you’re petite, faking height is often a priority. If your husband is 6’2”, try sitting on his lap or using poses that ask the groom to lean down, meeting you halfway. Avoid standing next to other tall people and objects that may cause you to look shorter. When you sit down, square your shoulders and sit up tall. You can always wear high heels to gain extra inches.

DON’T try to fake height by taking photos from a low vantage point. Some people think this will make subjects appear taller in photos, but it also causes distortion.

CURVY

Regardless of size, accentuating curves is often the goal for curvy brides. To make your

90

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

assets work for you (and not against you), employ a few simple tricks. First, avoid facing the camera straight on. Instead, angle your shoulders away from the camera just a little. Next, relax your shoulders and draw in your core. Lastly, rest all of your weight onto one leg.

DON’T place objects in front of the face to pull focus up. Instead, set items like bouquets in front of the abdomen to allow your face to be the focus.

TALL

You wouldn’t think it’d take too much work to help tall brides shine in photos. After all, super models are tall! However, the conundrum comes when the bride is taller than the groom. Play with angles. Take shots of the bride sitting and the groom standing nearby (or both sitting with her on his lap), lean the bride against a wall while the groom stands tall to disguise a few inches, or place the bride at a 45 degree angle across his lap. Need more? Stairs are your friend.

DON’T wear extremely high heels. Instead, opt for cute flats or low heels.

FAMILY

FEUDS DON’T LET DUELING FAMILIES RUIN YOUR BIG DAY  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Whether your family and future in-laws don’t see eye to eye or the conflict exists between members on one side, don’t let your wedding be the venue for a decades-long dispute to blow up. Instead, employ these helpful actions to stave off World War III and ensure you aren’t tackling in-laws and drunken uncles in your wedding dress.

TWEAK TRADITION

Blended families and in-laws who don’t get along are a recipe for disaster on your big day. If the volcano of hurt feelings threat92

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

ens to erupt mid-ceremony, do your best to calm the impending storm. Embrace tradition by creating a bride and groom side to separate quarreling guests. Or, if divorce is a factor, forgo the tradition of having one person walk the bride down the aisle and opt to make it a family affair or a one-woman journey to the altar.

MASTER THE SEATING CHART

You may not be able to stop squabbling siblings from interacting, but you can certainly try your hardest to limit their crossing paths. Make a diagram of your seating area, create a postit tag for each guest, and get to work. It may take some shuffling, but with enough attention to detail, you should be able to seat guests with beef at different tables, or even opposite sides of the room.

SAY NO TO ALCOHOL

An open bar is like adding fuel to the fire. Opt for a cash bar, no alcohol, or at least a wine and beer-only reception if it will keep tempers from boiling

over. Or, if a few choice players are causing you stress, alert the wedding planner and bartender. They can keep an eye on individuals and cut them off if necessary so you aren’t the bad guy.

CALL IN REINFORCEMENTS

In addition to the staff you have hired to help you get hitched without a hitch, employ a trustworthy brother-in-law or member of your bridal party to keep an eye on feuding relatives. These people can break up altercations before they draw attention, or run interference when it looks like your mother and mother-in-law might come faceto-face over the dessert table.

LET IT GO

Ultimately, it’s your day. You can talk to family members beforehand and employ every trick in the book but sometimes you just have to say bye-bye to stressing over what you can’t control. Let others do your dirty work and handle the potential agitators while you dance the night away.

Advice

TIPS from the

PROS WEDDING ADVICE FOR BRIDES AND GROOMS PLANNING THEIR BIG DAY  BY NORA HESTON TART

“Communicate. Make sure that you’re communicating everything that is important to you. Just focus on what your perfect day would look like and let your service provider know how they can help.” –Brittany Davis, General Manager, Perfect Balance Day Spa “Focus on your personal vision well ahead for how you wish your wedding day to be. Delegate each detail in advance so you can truly enjoy the most memorable moments of your life; you will relive this day for years to come.” –Lupe Graham, Event Planner, Oooh My Tablescape Designs & Events “Book early. That way you get who you want and who would be best suited for you rather than who is left.” –Krista Maiorana, Event Coordinator/Office Manager, Elite Entertainment “Schedule an engagement session before the big day. This will give your photographer an opportunity to see how you interact as a couple, and will allow you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera.” –Shawna Briggs, Owner/Photographer, Briggs Photography “When it comes to choosing a diamond, the cut is the most important of the four c’s (cut, color, clarity, and carat weight) because that’s the reason we buy diamonds, for the sparkle, shine, and amazing light performance.” –Gary Long, Owner, Gary J Long Jewelers “A quality dress feels different on your body but it also photographs different and it looks different because of the way it lays.” –Tammie Dimas, Owner, Bliss Bridal Salon now on Stockton’s Miracle Mile “Designate a go to person for back up plans from dress malfunctions to event communications with staff.” –Lupe Graham, Event Planner, Oooh My Tablescape Designs & Events

94

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

“Make sure that the DJ you choose will help coordinate and emcee your event as well as DJ. Our DJs are proactive so we kind of have an itinerary set up with our couples ahead of time.” –Krista Maiorana, Event Coordinator/Office Manager, Elite Entertainment “Stay hydrated before and after your sunless session to extend the life of your tan.” –Alyssa Delcarmen, Spa Director, Planet Beach “You have to absolutely love your dress. We always tell [brides] that only they can decide how important their dress is in the scheme of her entire budget. It has to be all about her.” –Tammie Dimas, Owner, Bliss Bridal Salon , Miracle Mile

“One of my favorite party favors is a vintage handkerchief filled with potpourri tied with a vintage ribbon and the bride and groom’s initials and the year they were married put on it.” –Kate Clarkson, Owner, French at Heart “You should work closely with your photographer to create a wedding day photography timeline. This will help your day run more smoothly and will ensure you get all the photos you want.” –Shawna Briggs, Owner/Photographer, Briggs Photography “If you want to get your skin in shape, make sure to plan out your facials every four to six weeks in a series, under recommendation of an esthetician, of course.” –Brittany Davis, General Manager, Perfect Balance Day Spa “When scheduling hair and makeup, leave a little wiggle room between the time you should be finished, and the time you are to begin photos.” –Shawna Briggs, Owner/Photographer, Briggs Photography “There’s always things we can do in all budgets, but sometimes you have to adjust your expectations.” –Belle Reynolds, Owner, Belle’s Lodi’s Flower Shop

“Organization is key for a blissful wedding day.” –Brittany Davis, General Manager, Perfect Balance Day Spa “Use specialty lights to highlight favorite moments from your big day.” –Kyle May, Co-owner, K&T Lights “You may want to purchase a pair of black socks for each of your groomsmen. Most tuxedo shops don’t supply socks with the tux. Better yet, look for some socks with a fun pattern or theme, such as your wedding colors, or superhero socks. It will make for fun photos!” –Shawna Briggs, Owner/Photographer, Briggs Photography “When purchasing bridal sets, I always say shop local. Stay with an independent brick and mortar, someone who will give you service after your sale.” –Gary Long, Owner, Gary J Long Jewelers

“We used to suggest colors for seasons but it’s different now. You can do anything you want. Everything is always in season.” –Belle Reynolds, Owner, Belle’s Lodi’s Flower Shop “I always recommend getting a massage a few days before your wedding to relax you, and waxing three days before.” –Brittany Davis, General Manager, Perfect Balance Day Spa “Make sure that the DJ you choose will help coordinate and emcee your event as well as DJ. Our DJs are proactive so we kind of have an itinerary set up with our couples ahead of time.” –Krista Maiorana, Event Coordinator/ Office Manager, Elite Entertainment

“Using makeup that is healthy for your skin, gives full coverage, and won’t make you break out on your wedding day is so important. The makeup line that we use, Jane Iredale, is the leading standard of ‘green beauty’ makeup, plus it looks and feels amazing on your skin!” –Teresa Georguson, Esthetician, The Makeup and Skincare Studio “I recommend a chemical peel or microdermabrasion to get rid of some of the heavy skin that builds up on the face. A facial is always good to clean up the pores, as well.” –Kathleen Vanni, Licensed Esthetician under Dr. Shaw, Total Body Medi Spa “The number one thing about buying a diamond is you need to see them in person.” –Dan Ingrum, President, Danz Jewelers “Regardless of budget, your guests will feel like royalty by adding your personal taste to the event decor; touches of sparkle, elegance, and ambiance making it the most fabulous day ever!” –Lupe Graham, Event Planner, Oooh My Tablescape Designs & Events

F lowers Budget:

SET A

Although fiscal demands of weddings vary depending on their elaborateness, plan on setting aside about 8 to 10 percent of your total budget for flowers.

MAKE

Arrangements: Find a collaborative floral designer with whom you connect. Reputable florists will be able to supply references and a work portfolio.

102

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

When it comes to picking out flowers for your wedding, don’t be a late bloomer; plan ahead to make sure that everything will come up roses on your big day.

STICK TO

Your Style: Not only should blooms be season and style appropriate, they should also complement bridal party attire (especially the bride’s gown), venue, theme, and color palette. Bring fabric and/or color swatches to meetings with florists.

SWEETTemptations DO YOUR

Homework Collect wedding cake photos and other things that inspire you to share with your wedding cake confectioner.

Bakery: Before settling on a particular cake maker, shop around. Find a baker who is open to your vision, and has the skills and experience to execute it.

EYE BEFORE

You Buy:

Don’t be in a sugar rush to make a decision. Ask questions, sample the goods, and be open to ther ideas.

104

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

An ideal wedding cake should hit the sweet spot. to find the object of your confection, keep the following factors in mind.

CONSIDER

the Logistics:

It’s okay to be sweet on style as long as you’ve thought about the nuts and bolts of cake-making. Arrange a complimentary tasting, discuss plate/pillar rental fees and delivery costs, and be aware of payment and cancellation policies.

MAKE IT

Yours:

A cake should complement your indiviaul aisle style and your wedding’s theme, color, and attire. It shoud also reflect the couple it celebrates, so use monograms, bridal gown accents (think lace and ribbon), or another unique touch to personalize it.
