cover story The Green

Wedding One’s wedding is the biggest day of anybody’s life but wedding also are a very expensive extravaganza that does lead to harming the environment in many ways. Recent wedding trends show that many eco-conscious youngsters are following celebrities such as Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway and going for vegan weddings. The priority is to generate zero waste rather than get the best beautician, bartender or bridesmaid. With eco-friendly, green and vegan emerging as popular wedding themes, the big Indian wedding is being forced to shed some fat. For instance, Chennai-based couple Monica Pandian, an entrepreneur, and Praveen Raj, an engineer, tied the knot at the lush green lawns of VGP Golden Beach Resort on June 5, World Environment Day. The date was decided a year ahead at their engagement, which coincided with World Vegan Day (November 1). Everything about the celebration was aimed at recording a minimum carbon footprint. The invitations had a note on veganism, and were made of eco-friendly handmade paper for relatives, and digitally sent for friends. The guests were requested to avoid wearing silk, leather or fur and using plastics at the venue. Monica wore a dress tailored from a natural-dyed cotton saree made of organic handloom, and Praveen, a handloom organic rain-fed cotton-dyed suit. Monica’s jewels were done using seeds and grains (made by Jungle Jewels). A lavish wedding generates tonnes of waste, and creates landfills, says Monica, who did her Masters in Ecology and Environment Science in Pondicherry University, and now runs a company called Mystic, which provides earth-friendly alternatives and services. According to figures given by citybased wedding planner company Marriage Colours, around 12,000 couples tie the knot on an auspicious day in India. That sums up to around 10 million a year. How much waste would that generate, Monica wondered. She didn’t want theirs to contribute to this burning issue. “The first time I voiced my idea about a green wedding, my family was very speculative. They said, ‘But this is not the traditional way’. However, once they saw the setting, they were convinced,” she says. The duo even made sure that musical instruments such as the tavil, which are made of animal skin, were replaced with SRI Mridangam — a synthetic fibreglass shell mridangam (specially made in Bangalore). With that, the couple checked all the boxes to make the wedding animal cruelty-free. Page 2

continued from pg 1 The jewellery completes the entire look of the day for the bride. Farah Khan, celebrity jewellery designer discusses how brides can incorporate modern adaptations of traditional jewellery pieces. She points out how many brides are wearing a crown or tiara instead of a maang tikka. Farah says “ A maang tikka has always been an essential jewellery item for brides. Opting

Another trending Indian bridal jewellery is the concept of layering. Many brides often double-down their neck pieces by choosing a choker along with a long string to go with it. raphers who will ensure to give you a box full of memories.

While decorations and interiors set the background, there is just one piece missing- a photographer to capture it all. Meet Sumit Vyas of I Do, he has been a wedding photographer for the past 7 years and has captured various wedding in his career. Sumit tells us that also of wedding he is covering these days, the couple want vintage old-school shots. He carries with him a reference guidebook of iconic poses that perfectly suit the vintage backdrop.

Ketan Sharma, a famous Delhi- based wedding planner tells us how desi couples are increasingly demanding a vintage setup. He says, “ The groom wants to enter on a vintage car, the bride wants and english teaparty for a bachelorette. Everybody is going old-school.” Decorations to have taken a history lesson. Umbrellas, intricate wooden furniture, lamps and kettles are the top decor items found in these weddings. One couple in fact recreated the old punjab days with charpai and tall peetal cutlery to serve food and drinks to their guests at their wedding.

But at the end of the day it is all about capturing memories that on will revisit often. So Sumit’s advise to all to-be couples, be true to yourself. If you love, love, love the vintage look, and it truly reflects you, then of course have it – it would be a shame not to. But, make the look you see in other’s photographs a stepping stone to capturing your own uniqueness. Don’t allow a photographic style to stamp all over your own sense of individuality. Your wedding photographer should take YOU as the inspiration to create gorgeous, emotive, passionate images, not someone else’s wedding.

GLOW Revisiting the benefits of traditional beauty techniques for beautiful skin and hair.

Hello Gorgeous Skin Remember how in your early years, each time you saw your Dadi her face was had a radiating glow. Even today wrinkles cannot seem to hide the everlasting beauty. I don’t know about you, but my grandma has never seen the face of a parlour and yet she looks perfect from head to toe. So what is their secret? Going All Natural is the answer. Before Mud Baths and Mud packs hit the cosmetics industry there existed Multani Mitti. An earthen face clay, multani mitti for beauty care is regarded as one of the most effective natural ingredients to bring a glow on your face. It is a mud like substance which is extracted from the earth’s surface and works for all skin types. It is a great agent to clean, exfoliate and nourish your skin. It has active elements that effectively absorb dirt, oil, sweat and impurities, leaving the skin clean, soft and supple.

Chilly, windy weather, direct sun heat and pollution leave the hair dry and lifeless. The feasible and viable solution that wont cost you much is right their in your kitchen. Yes, various kitchen products can be used as conditioners that deeply nourish your hair preventing split ends and hair loss. Egg, beer and coconut oil are age old home remedies used by many. Some new ingredients include carrot juice, aloe vera, milk and honey- all of these can be applied gently on the scalp and tresses, left to dry for half and hour and then thoroughly washed with water and mild shampoo. Apple cider vinegar just like beer is a natural conditioner that has anti-fungal properties making it an effective natural antidandruff treatment. Put one tbsp of ACV in a bowl of water and gently pour it on washed hair, leave it for 10 minutes and rinse with water. Regular usage of ACV has shown improvement in people’s hair quality. Whatever your hair style or hair colour maybe these homemade ingredients are beneficial for everyone. So go in your kitchen and pick up anything you would usually eat, inside this time use it to nourish and get silky long hair.

YEST-YOUR CHARM Fuller’s Earth as it I famously known internationally, is making a mark worldwide. It is being used in spas, parlours, salons and beauty centres across borders with a host of other complimentary products. Dr.. Deepali Bhardwaj, a Delhi-based skin care expert recommends multani mitti face pack twice a month. You can mix it with a host of ingredients depending on your skin type. Mix it with rose water to make an even paste and apply it for fairer, glowing skin. For oily skin, mix equal quantities of orange peel powder and multani mitti, blend the two with rosewater, apply evenly on the face, let it dry and rinse gently. Regular application will help keep excess oil off and control acne or pimple breakouts. Long, Lustrous and Silky Hair Before hair spas, conditioners and vitamin-e oils, there was the age-old practice of hot oil massages by Nani Maa. In their own wise words, “just like our body needs food to survive, our hair needs daily nourishment from oils.” But in todays busy world people hardly have time to oil their hair let alone leave it overnight. So how does one achieve strong, lustrous, silky hair?

Nouveau in Vogue When you debut with the Badshah of Bollywood, you are expected to conquer hearts too and without doubt, Deepika Padukone has become the Queen of fashion for every girl next door. Since her debut in the industry 10 years ago, Deepika has come along way not just in terms of her career choices but also her fashion statement. Her initial years in the industry were all about making a mark that lasts a lifetime. In these struggling years, Deepika opted for the basic style with tank tops and highly embellished Indian-wear by designers like Rohit Bal and Manish Malhotra. She played it safe both on and off screen but her looks just didn’t suit her tall lean body, rather than accentuating her best feature it hid them.

Suddenly the actress started taking risks. It all began with her controversial statements about ex-Ranbir on chat show Koffee with Karan alongside Sonam Kapoor in 2011. Deepika was seen wearing a crimson cut-gown by Monisha Jaisingh and since then her wardrobe has taken a turn to the risky bold road of fashion that captures her strong personality. On screen, this era began with the release of Cocktail in 2012 where Deepika was seen depicting Veronica a care free girl. Since then her movies have

depicted her in varied roles with experimental style statements. With both on and off screen success stories,

Deepika has today become a Trendsetter. She presents a complete look with complementing hairstyles, accessories and footwear. The highlight of her fashion career was with her debut at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards which she attended promote her first Hollywood project, XXX: Return of the Xander Cage. Deepika was seen wearing a sequenced bra let and complementary bomber jacket paired with an olive-green skirt with a slit up to the thigh. The look was completed with olive-green fringe earrings, black Balamian statement belt and black stilettoes. The look was perfect for a music award event- edgy and a definite head-turner. Deepika has truly evolved from her awkward initial years to become a style diva for many girls in the country. She has become a trend setter unafraid to adorn any look.

Wedding season is here and it has brought the Indian Couture Week with it. Many designers displayed their work at the week long event, bringing in with them new designs and styles. The one that stood out was Varun Bahl who showcased his collection on Day-5 of the event. Inspired by the works of Czech painter Alphonse Mucha, Bahl presented Art Nouveau theme vintage floral stories. Known for his innovative design aesthetics, the line was all about over-lapping surface ornamentation, intricate needlework and bold prints on soft buttery chiffons, satins, silks, tulle and georgette. Borrowing from Mucha’s masterpieces, the couturier blended vintage aesthetics with modern day sensibilities. The colour palette relied on ivory, pale pink, red, peach, old rose, pistachio and burnt orange. Delicate floral and plant motifs are seen throughout

the collection. There’s a mix of voluminous, structured, and layered silhouettes on display. The collection was an assortment of lehengas, anarkalis, saris and a mix of tailored couture pieces to choose from. What seems to set this collection apart from all the previous showcases by the designer is the strong presence of Art Nouveau outfits in Indian silhouettes. Bahl is known for his long-lasting love with floral prints but this time he gave it a Nouveau-twist which makes it grab attention not just on the ramp but off it too in the eyes of the fashion followers. The colour palettes in sync with the recent trend of a shift from staple reds to soft pastel shades in bridal couture. For me, this collection is suitable for the young modern Indian who prefers traditional cuts with a unique international edge.

The ever-colourful RANVEER ‘ The King of Quirky’- his out of the box fashion appearances always leave people amazed. The actor decided to support ace designer Manish Arora as he showcased his recent collection titled “Cosmic Love”. Ranveer, true to his style turned up just as cosmic wearing an electric rainbow-sequenced bomber jacket paired with black pants and shoes. He completed the look with a black hat and statement sunnies.

While most people are waiting for a rainbow in this dull weather, Ranveer Singh turned for the fourth day of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2017. Ranveer is not one of those who follows fashion trends, he creates them. There is a reason why he is called Page 4

Ranveer has been known to turn heads with his wild fashion choices and he did so at the event too. Though he wasn’t the show stopper for the show, his attire did grab eyeballs. The outfit seemed befitting for the occasion as it captured the essence of the collection on display as well stayed true to the star’s style mantra. Once again, the man with an uncompromising fashion sense in the industry managed to own a fashion event and left the world blind in love.
