o I have a side project at work. Our office overlooks a landscaped courtyard and in the spring the rose bushes and cherry blossom trees outside our windows explode with pink flowers. The roses especially are above average—there are probably more petals on the plants than leaves. Every single day people will stop to take photos of the roses. It’s amusing to see repetitively so I’ve been compiling an album of people taking photos of the roses, staring at the roses, smelling the roses, picking the rose petals off the ground and putting them on their heads, etc. Usually I’m too slow in reaching for my phone, yet I’ve acquired about 25 photos...and got another while writing this. Although it’s a lighthearted project for me, they’re onto something. I see these roses daily, yet didn’t acknowledge that they are particularly eye-catching until noticing people taking time out of their day to appreciate them. The moral of this is not to be self-conscious while admiring roses (because someone like me could be analyzing you) but to appreciate how beautiful this city we see every day is. Take a page from this issue and rediscover our coastline or have dinner at a tried and true local restaurant. And sure, if you want to, stop and smell the roses.

Potato Latkes — tempeh bacon, avocado, dijon, cornichon, pink lady apple, pea tendril 22 | MAY/JUNE 2018
the Rainbow From the moment the waiter walked out of the kitchen doors with the plate in hand, dazzling with different colors and bright as a rainbow, I could not break my stare, I was too filled with anticipation for what he was bringing my way. When he placed my meal in front of me, the pinks, greens, oranges, and yellows were all glowing so bright they practically jumped off of the platter; I was baffled that the content was actually edible. And then one after the other the dishes kept coming, each of comparable beauty to the next, truly like edible art. It was a brisk Santa Barbara morning, and after a day-turned-week of blowing off my New Year’s health kick resolution, my body and mind were in need of a revitalizing meal. Although my boyfriend and I arrived sharply at opening, Mesa Verde was already flooded with people and the steady flow of diners continued throughout the two hours we were there. Despite the influx of other diners, the waiter greeted us promptly at the door and continued to make us feel like the only two people there the whole time. We took advantage of the spacious outside dining area which was full of wooden tables, surrounded by illuminating green trees and flowers, and flooded with light on the Saturday morning. Just one look at the vegetarian menu and I was pleasantly surprised by the endless delicious options. Drinks were the first of the big decisions to make, and after long contemplation we ended up with one Kali’s Chai to get our caffeine fix, and one Jupiter Smoothie. The mixture of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg in the chai drink tantalized my taste buds with the sweet yet light flavoring, but it was the addition of the almond milk and raw honey that truly stole my heart. After quickly sipping down the warm beverage, I immediately moved on to the smoothie made up of dates, cinnamon, bananas, and raw honey, which tricked me into thinking I was really treating myself to a milkshake and not a healthy blended beverage. We had barely broke ground at our brunch and our expectations were already blown away just by the drinks! @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 23

In a timely fashion, the waiter brought out the next order: Grilled Flatbread. Partnered with freshly made hummus, green olives, and olive oil to top, it was a match made in heaven. After we finished off the flatbread itself, we resorted to scooping the remnants of the hummus into our mouths with our spoons; it was simply too good to let one bite go to waste.
Poseidon Smoothie — banana, chlorella, almond butter, pistachios, hemp seeds, raw honey
After basically licking the hummus plate clean, the waiter swiftly brought out the next two orders as if he could read the looks of excitement and anticipation in our eyes. I had eaten potato latkes before, but these were like nothing I had ever seen. The presentation was impossible to ignore, with the latkes stacked on top of each other, enclosing tempeh bacon, avocado, and pink lady apple in a sandwichlike form and served on a black stone slate—further solidifying the feeling of oneness with earth that the restaurant provokes. Following the first bite, it was no surprise that the taste was a perfect match for the unique presentation. With one main dish down and one to go, we could not be more eager to delve in. Right on cue, our attentive waiter brought out the final item and the star of the show: the Macro Bowl. While tasting each of the dishes I thought I had landed on my favorite, however it wasn’t until after this bowl came out, shimmering with vibrant colors and wafting with delicious smells, that I knew it was about to take first place. The white beans and black rice were accompanied by an assortment of fresh bok choy, long carrots, onion, kabocha, and tempeh bacon, all grilled to perfection, garnished with a layer of green tahini and topped with bright fuchsia colored flower petals, to stick with the feel of nature that was intertwined in each of the dishes. Many non-vegetarians like myself are hesitant to entertain the idea of strictly plant-based meals, however this one that I just indulged in could turn even the biggest of skeptics. The flavors were unwavering in richness and zest, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t just making it up in my head. Santa Barbara is in no way lacking in the brunch department, however with its fresh and hearty menu options, Mesa Verde offers a rare dining experience that is incomparable to the others in the area, making for a great weekend treat.

K C A D L R B BI A beautiful sunny day transcends into a cool evening at Hotel Californian as a soft breeze blows down State Street and seagulls fly over the horizon where the sun has begun to set over the Pacific Ocean. I make my way past the hotel’s palm tree lined courtyard and into Blackbird where I am entranced by the restaurant’s chic yet masculine décor: black and red checkered flooring, red leather chairs, large mirrors, and a sleek black bar lined with stainless steel cabinets. I’m seated at a candle lit table, the flame creating a dancing shadow of the Moroccan patterned candle holder. I order the Blissful Mint mocktail, and before I know it a glass of sparkling water infused with blueberry, fresh mint, and lemon is in my hand. I take a sip of the rosy pink mix; it is both sweet and invigorating. The drink has inspired a citrus kick so I start off the meal with a plate of creamy burrata and sorrel over a bed of crunchy granola, topped with hazelnuts, mandarin orange slices, and a sprinkle of bee pollen. I smooth a spoonful over a piece of warm flatbread and relish in the multitude of flavors. The velvety cheese accompanied by the crunchy granola texture and citrus all begin to dance in my mouth.

Next up is the cauliflower soup. The waiter returns with a dramatic black bowl cradling a pile of onions, pickled pears, and black truffles. As he pours the silky white soup over the contents aromatic steam reaches my nose. I close my eyes to breathe it all in. I can taste each ingredient before even taking one bite. And when I do take my first bite, it is even better than I had imagined. The light and creamy cauliflower enhances the sweet and salty pears and highlights the pungent truffles. I savor each spoonful until the bowl is clean. For my main course, I order the sliced duck breast surrounded by duck confit filled pasta, a mĂŠlange of broccolini, and date-carmelized onions. The moist and tender duck pairs amazingly with the tart confit filled pasta and savory veggies. Needless to say, it disappears quickly. Last, but certainly not least of course, I fill the remaining crevice of my stomach with the rich and gooey chocolate soufflĂŠ, served over soft chickpea puree and topped with an almost-too-pretty-to-eat spun sugar donut and tart gooseberry sorbet. After dinner, the sun has set and the street is lit by street lights and lanterns; the sound of waves crashing echos from the wharf. I take a walk past the courtyard again, this time completely satiated by a dinner that imitated art.

Buon Appetito! Photographed by Silas Fallstich Written by Maizy Greenwald
The heavy rains that saturated sunny Santa Barbara finally halted, and the stars began to shine through the dark clouds that hovered above, making for the perfect setting to indulge in a helping (or three) of comfort food. The lights were low yet the spirits were high as we could hear the humming of conversation accompanied by roaring laugher upon entering the quaint tucked away restaurant, Pane e Vino. Inside, there were dozens of people who somehow all seemed to know each other, or maybe it was just the family-oriented and homey vibe making it seem that way. Everyone was gushing with joy, probably in part induced by the copious amounts of wine visible on each of the tables, but regardless, it was just so hard not to be cheerful in the midst of a place that made me feel right at home; I sure had a hard time trying not to smile. 38 | MAY/JUNE 2018
Two glasses of Au Bon Climat Chardonnay got the meal started off on the right track, but it was the warm Italian bread rolls with fresh tart olive oil that got my taste buds really excited for what was yet to come. It seemed like it would be a crime to not order the Mozzarella di Buffala to start off the night, and the second I bit into the fluffy white cloud perched on top of crisp tomato and garnished with fresh basil, I knew that was the only way to go. At about this time (mid-bite of Mozzarella) I spotted a man walking toward the table, bottle inhand, and I silently prayed he was actually coming our way. Manager of Pane e Vino, Tyler, was coming to greet us in the typical Italian way: with wine. He looked at our sad empty glasses of the original Chardonnay and insisted we move onto the Manna, a hybrid blend which he had just discovered and was not even a member of the wine list yet. To say that this one blew the last out of the water would be an understatement.

Ravioli Di Zucca Con Burro E Salvia — homemade pasta pillows stuffed with pumpkin & ricotta, topped with butter & sage 40 | MAY/JUNE 2018
After becoming acquainted, Tyler contended that we let him take it from here, and I was not about to argue with this expert. His first contribution: the eggplant meatballs, an appetizer special. They sat in a trifecta between dollops of burrata cheese, met in the middle by fresh tomato and basil, with house-made pesto drizzled throughout the plate. I looked at him, looked at my fork, and dug in without a second thought. A crisp crunch on the outside coupled with a soft cushiony inside made for the perfect consistency in each bite. And just like that, a smooth pour of the wine to refill our depleted glasses, with its soft fruity and floral notes cleansing our palates while we not-so patiently waited to see what surprise was in store for us next. A plate divided: half containing ravioli stuffed with veal, prosciutto, mushrooms, and ricotta, and the other half home to pillowy gnocchi which was kept simple with a light layer of red sauce sure to not overpower the soft dumplings. Each nibble, or should I say mouthful, left me wanting more even when I could feel my stomach about to reach its full capacity. The butter and sage topping on the ravioli made it impossible to put my fork down, I didn’t want to lose out on one morsel. When I looked down at the plate that we had somehow ended up licking clean, I thought the unbelievable meal must sadly be over, but good thing, like me, Italians like to eat. Right on cue Tyler, who I should really refer to as “my hero,” brought out a plate of his favorite: the venison chop. I wondered how he could even play favorites with such an extensive menu containing dishes which all rivaled in deliciousness, but one bite into the rich meat and I understood. Paired with a tall glass of the Chianti Classico red, and the flavors ignited. The garlic and rosemary undertones became stronger with each bite until I actually had to tell myself to put down the fork and regain my composure. A show-stopping Tiramisu was brought out just as we were about to throw in the towel, but I guess there’s always room for dessert! Especially one with such perfect alternating layers of ladyfingers, mascarpone, espresso, and cocoa, making it absolutely undeniable. Between the unparalleled service, mom and pop ambience, and food that brought me back to my days traveling around Italy, my stomach was full and my heart was happy and I knew that from this moment on I had to work Pane e Vino into my regular restaurant rotation.

NEAT
to have
Written by Kim Hashemi & Kat Pettey
It’s already that time of year again. The weather has warmed up—giving me an opportunity to open the windows, swap out my cold-weather coats for some lightweight pieces, and give my space a much-needed makeover. As I walked through my home, I immediately felt overwhelmed by the amount of work that needed to be put in into organizing. Naturally, I reached out to Kat Pettey, expert organizer and owner of NEAT Method Santa Barbara, to guide me through the process of purging my home, and gained valuable information along the way. Spring cleaning (or as I like to say “spring organizing”), might seem like a daunting task. Here are some tips and tricks I learned to help make the process a little less overwhelming.
1. Start Small. Getting started is half the battle. Spring
organizing doesn’t mean you need to go off the grid and disappear into a cleaning and organizing frenzy. If de-cluttering your kitchen is much needed, start with the pantry and tell yourself that just purging expired items is enough of an accomplishment for one day. I promise just this small step will feel so good that it will be the catalyst to the large-scale change(s) you are looking for. Before you know it, organizing your drawers, cabinets and counters will be getting checked off the list!
2. Purge Before You Purchase. Before you go buying every cute storage basket within a 20 mile radius, take a look at what you have. Do you love it? If not, toss it. Whether it’s your collection of bags or serving platters, what’s leftover should be your favorite pieces, and nothing more. THEN, you can map out your organizing system and shop!
3. Donate. Find a place that inspires you to eliminate items from your home. For example, donate to a women’s shelter or your local school library. You’ll feel better knowing that you’re contributing to a good cause. 44 | MAY/JUNE 2018
4. Enlist The Help Of Others. If you have children, encourage them to help with the process. They’ll have fun sorting their toys or checking for expiration dates—they’re natural born helpers! 5. Hire Someone To Do It For You. If organizing just isn’t your thing, or you don’t have the time, call in the professionals! NEAT Method will get you organized and on your way in no time.
SB LIFE & STYLE wellness Top 10 Things a NEAT Person Does Every Day While neatness comes as second nature to many of us, it’s a habit I believe everyone should pick up because of its array of positive benefits, including increased productivity and reduced stress levels. Organization frees both our minds and environments of clutter, allowing us to focus on day-to-day tasks, and spend more quality time with loved ones. While there is no “one size fits all” system to organization, here are some tips to help increase clarity and efficiency in your life.
1. Make The Bed. This may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many
people skip this task! Research shows that it kicks your brain into productive mode. It’s that mental shift you need that helps set the tone for the day.
2. Tackle “Morning Things” At Night. Great mornings start the night before. So, put out coffee mugs and fixings, make lunches, pack your bag, and lay out your outfit the night before. Mornings can feel rushed and even a little chaotic if you’ve got kids you’re trying to shuffle out the door, so why not make it a little easier on yourself and get some things ready, with a glass of wine and some music, of course. 3. Make A To-Do List. Whether it’s work, parenthood, or just life in general, our plates can get pretty full and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Having a daily to-do list handy will help keep you on track. I like the classic pen and paper note-taking, but there are many fantastic apps out there such as Evernote or Google Keep, if digital is your thing. Tip: Be sure to tackle those least-desirable tasks first because you’re likely to be more productive during the early hours of the day. 4. Put Things In Their Homes. I believe every item should have a
dedicated (labeled!) home, and if it doesn’t, create one. This is the key to being organized. When you have special home for EVERYTHING, down to your pens and lip gloss, tidying up won’t feel like a chore.
5. Do a Bag/Wallet Dump At The End Of The Day. We
know this might seem like overkill, but you’d be surprised at what you can accumulate in one day! File receipts, transfer change to your piggy bank, toss trash, and keep only the essentials you’ll need for the next day.
6. Clean. Take out some time each day to wash dishes, wipe down counters, and throw in a load of laundry if necessary. Staying on top of these small tasks will help keep your space tidy and create a peaceful home environment.
7. Sort Mail. If you don’t have time to open your mail right away, that’s fine (we all know a bill when we see one!), but I recommend keeping a simple sorting station near the door that’s customized to you and your family. 8. Meal Plan. If you aren’t into the monthly/weekly plan approach, at least think about your dinner plan at the start of the day, even if it’s eating out. This allows you to take a look at your food inventory and pick up a couple ingredients if need be, or settle on a restaurant ahead of time. There is nothing fun about decision-paralysis when you’re hungry. 9. Carve Out Some “ME” Time. Let’s face it, professional organizers can be a little too “Type A” at times so it can be hard to give ourselves that break, but it’s important to reset and relax even if it’s only for 15 minutes at a time. We’re all about balance!

Healing Together Written by Alexandra Sharova
I believe life brings us to where we need to be, to whom we need to meet, and to the things we need to experience, at the right time. The universe works in mysterious ways when it comes to that stuff. When I heard about Jennifer Schaefer of The Alternative, I was absolutely lost. I couldn’t make a choice between the options presented before me, and even worse, I didn’t know what I wanted in life. So when the opportunity to meet with a “healer” presented itself, I took it as a sign and jumped at the chance to find some direction, get some answers, and yes, in a way, heal myself. I know what you’re thinking…“A healer? That’s so LA.” Yet, it didn’t feel phony or trendy, in fact, it was one of the realest experiences I’ve had. After making my way through the winding Hollywood Hills, I arrive in Studio City at Jennifer’s office. She greets me with a hug and a welcoming smile. She’s warm, inviting, and doesn’t possess any of the hippie stereotypes one would expect from a healer. The office vibe is of a chill living room, equipped with cozy chairs, a calming tabletop fountain, and bohemian accents that don’t overwhelm the space. I sit down and Jennifer explains what exactly it is that she does. She starts by reading a client’s energy through hydrogen vibrations. Translation? Hydrogen moves through our bodies twelve times a day in four chambers, each one representing a different sector: the emotional, physical, spiritual, and energetic body. This is how she determines where there is an energy block, aka the problem, which can be either emotional or physical. After reading my energies, which aren’t that bad apparently (given my circumstance) she tells me, “You’re not yourself, you’re depressed.” I reluctantly nod in agreement. She proceeds to ask, “When did this begin?” and before I have a chance to answer she answers for me, “A month ago.” I whip out the calendar on my phone, and am amazed to find out that a month ago exactly is when my troubles began. I didn’t tell her a thing yet…how could she know? This was just the beginning of Jennifer reading me like a book, and guiding me along the way through chapters I had completely forgotten about, and ones I never knew existed. Over our next few sessions we discuss everything from my childhood to my career, and of course relationships. In most cases, Jennifer asks me questions and answers them herself—the level of accuracy and understanding blows my mind each time. Together, we set a goal for our sessions: to learn to trust myself, my choices, and develop my intuition. Turns out I should be very good at this, because
according to Jennifer I’m an empath and have a natural gift of strong intuition—something I always wanted, but can say with certainty it hasn’t worked too well in past, as if it’s been broken. This is due to an emotional block, Jennifer explains. Besides helping me deal with the block by reflecting on past memories and letting go of certain grudges, she shows me a game meant to develop my self-trust. Jennifer hands me a bag filled with Viking symbols. I need to find the one the one that speaks to me…without looking. I choose two symbols, placing one in each hand, all with my eyes shut. I’m supposed to feel which one is meant for me. No easy feat. After a series of deep breaths and some serious concentration, my right palm begins to heat up—that has to be the one. I open my eyes and tell Jennifer that’s my symbol, I can literally feel it. The symbol represents a journey. A fitting choice considering my move, internal journey and approaching European adventure. It’s hard to explain how the whole experience with Jennifer made me feel. It was raw. It was tough—she’s a no BS kind of woman and will tell you what you need to hear, rather than what you want to hear. It was eye opening. And it was totally worth it. Jennifer’s clientele—she works with people in London, the Middle East, and even makes her way to Santa Barbara for sessions—come for everything from love troubles to autoimmune diseases. Her treatment options vary from one-on-one sessions to group retreats in Bali and Mexico, catering to a wide range of needs. But most importantly, her reputation speaks for itself, with an incredible success rate and list of clients who become more like friends. Yet, this really is not about the facts, it’s about a feeling that needs to be experienced. I was so blown away by my time with Jennifer that I recommended her to my friends and family, several of which have gone and just like myself, left her office enlightened and pleased with the unexpected results. She truly helped me clear my head, move on from the past, and, embrace my journey. I left for my vacation feeling at peace. The only thing that’s left now is the “breakthrough” Jennifer told me I am going to have while on my trip. I just hope it’s a good one, and that I catch the signs, and follow my intuition.

FOREVER YOUNG You know those mornings when you look at yourself in the mirror and do a double take, and ask “Where did that wrinkle come from? Or is that a sleep line?” Signs of aging on the skin usually appear around age 30, although some women report seeing lines and wrinkles in their 20s. As the skin ages it becomes less energetic, immune function decreases, structural components deteriorate, chronic inflammation develops, and it has decreased ability to repair DNA damage. 90% of our lifestyle effects our skin and my belief is treating the skin as a whole—what we put on topically and what we take in internally—and aging gracefully. Here are a few preventative tips for aging gracefully:

A skincare expert’s guide to preventing signs of aging
STRESS MANAGEMENT
FACIALS
Stress management nutritional tips: Almonds, pistachios and walnuts all help minimize the adrenal response provoked by stress.
INFLAMMATION
Skin is the most environmentally stressed organ so minimizing stress is a crucial component in prevention of chronic inflammatory conditions.
Vitamin C boosts your immune system while helping normalize blood pressure and cortisol levels. Dark green vegetables, such as broccoli, kale and spinach help the body resist the depleting effects of stress. Drink plenty of water! Dehydration stresses the body. Take your body weight, divide it in half, and that is how many ounces a day you should be drinking. When you get stressed, breathe more slowly and deeply. As you breathe, your chest and abdomen should move together. When you are tense you tend to hold your breath, which is not a good thing. Eat well, especially fruits and vegetables that are brightly colored, hence rich sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are essential to all living tissue because they capture and trap free radical activity and protect the skin against premature aging and disease, as well as neutralizing the free radicals that occur naturally in the skin. Key Antioxidants to look for: Vitamin A Vitamin C Vitamin D Vitamin E Alpha Lipoic Acid Co-Enzyme Q10 Green Tea
SLEEP
By day the body protects itself, by night the body repairs itself. Sleep gives your body and mind time to restore, renew and shed toxins through breath and skin. When your body is at a restful state you have more oxygen flow in the tissue, therefore better absorption of the repairing products in your nighttime regime.
SLEEP LINES
Sleep on your back if you can. When you sleep on your side you create sleep lines on your face and décolleté, deep creases, and even puffy eyes over a period of time.
Facials with an experienced licensed aesthetician are recommended every 4-6 weeks or even 8 weeks. Facial treatments not only deeply cleanse the skin, they exfoliate the uppermost epidermal layers, which allows your home care products to penetrate effectively. All skin, and certainly weakened or aged skin, is subject to inflammation. It can be prevented by using a wide spectrum of topical products formulated with antiinflammatory properties and antioxidant ingredients, and consuming foods that have anti-inflammatory benefits. The key ingredients listed below help reinforce, protect and boost the antioxidant response system. Look for these in your home care products: Aloe Vera Allatoin Alpha Lipoic acid L-Asorbic Acid Beta Glucans Copper peptides Green Tea Resveratrol Spin Traps Tocopherols
HOME CARE PROTOCOL
Home care is essential for prevention and keeping skin healthy. You are able to treat your skin everyday to improve pigmentation, dehydrated skin, fine lines, or any skin condition. When choosing home care products, pick result oriented skin care products. Look for the following key ingredients in your home care regime: Resveratrol Matrixyl™ 3000 L-Asorbic Acid D-Beta-Glucosamine Retinol Hyaluronic Acid Spin Trap Lactic Acid Cassia Beta Glucan Snap8 (Octapeptide-3) L-Superoxide Dismutase Syn-coll® (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5) EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor)

We’re not saying we’re immortal... Written by Amy Dong Photographed by Silas Fallstich

he wellness revolution is everywhere. Ask anyone and they will likely be able to rattle off their go-to green juice, latest low-carb/high-fat diet, and fitness flavor of the month. And I am no exception of the latter as an avid yogi, plant-based foodie, and frequent meditator. Yet I can’t help but wonder, what’s next? What could possibly be the next step that further propels the wellness movement? In other words, have we hit a wellness glass ceiling? (Hint: the answer is no.) Elysium Health is a New Age wellness company at the forefront of a health revolution that will biologically change our definition of wellness. Okay, so I realize that this is a big claim to make. At first, I was skeptical too so I headed straight to the source, Eric Marcotulli, Founder and CEO of Elysium Health, for answers. Chatting with Eric, an incredibly well read and intelligent individual, I had to stay on my toes to follow along. But I think he sensed my less than adequate knowledge of cellular biology and broke it down for me. And I was amazed at what I learned. In the course of human history, three things are absolutely certain: we’re born, we live, and then we die; this is universally true. Elysium went against the grain, and instead of tackling age-related chronic diseases, they went for the head honcho: aging. And what they found was quite definitive (even I could understand it): NAD+ is a naturally occuring compound on every living being on Earth, except jellyfish, they apparently get to live forever. As we age, our NAD+ production decreases and not coincidentally, so does our health. Research companies have been trying to remedy aging for years and Elysium has finally cracked the code. This research based health powerhouse has lifted the curtain on aging, fending off degenerative illnesses with a naturally occuring compound. Their first product, Basis, has been clinically proven to safely increase levels of NAD+ in the body (in other words, it keeps your cells happy). When I asked Eric about Elysium’s mission, he chuckled lightly and said, “I’ll keep this short for you Amy, because I could go on and on, but Elysium is based on the fundamental belief that we have the opportunity to actually make a difference.” After a thirty minute conversation and okay a little extra research, I was convinced. While I didn’t renounce my passion for downward dog or kale, I made Elysium’s Basis a priority in my wellness practice. After all, my cells will thank me later.

hen on the hunt for a quick trip I tend to gravitate towards the water, oceanfront locations to be exact. There’s just something calming about the sound of rolling waves, crisp salty air biting at your cheeks in the early morning, and of course, the unrivaled sight of the setting sun over reflecting water. Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica has all of the above, and so, so much more—making it a no-brainer choice for my mother-daughter weekend. I enter the Mediterranean villa-inspired building, and it’s 1926 erection shines through; from the brick construction to winding staircases on either side of the art-decorated lobby, and the unparalleled service that’s reminiscent of the good old days, when staff wore sharp suits and tended to one’s every request. I wait for my mother’s arrival in the spacious and bustling lobby—decorated 84 | MAY/JUNE 2018
by renowned interior designer Michael S. Smith—equipped with plush chairs, printed throw pillows, rich wood accents, and both hotel guests and locals. I’m offered a complimentary cocktail, a great way to start my stay. The pear martini is sweet, with a welcoming bite of vodka. Speaking of sweet with a bite, halfway through my drink my mom arrives and we make our way to our room. A faint sky-blue adorns the walls, while variations of ocean hues pop up in the Persian rug, Moroccan throw blanket, and oriental vases that blend in to a bookshelf stocked with beach-related memorabilia—think seashells and oceanography books. Although the accents are worldly, the overall feel of the room leans more towards an elevated-Hamptons beach house, but in an understated way. The room is calming—ideal for unwinding after a day of

business meetings or simply while on vacation. But the real gem lies in the bathroom…it’s the tub of all tubs, people! From marble tiles to the serious jets, it’s the end-of-day ritual we all need. Plus, the bathroom features a lovely “mini bar” of products for purchase that take bath time to the next level of relaxation. It’s 7 p.m., and that means dinner time at Casa del Mar’s Catch restaurant. Presenting sweeping views of the Pacific, the restaurant is the ideal spot to indulge in the best Santa Monica has to offer, while enjoying the lobby’s nightly live music. Tonight, Ember sings her rendition of today’s pop hits, and I must admit, her acoustic versions are better (plus they tie the ambiance of the room together with a jazzy ribbon). The restaurant’s sous chef, Octavio, comes to our table and provides recommendations and explains the seafoodrich menu, while I sip on a frothy Jasmine-tini. They say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, so we indulged, ordering the finest of the “mar.” We commence with half-dozen Kusshi oysters, whose fruity finish lingers after the petite delights are gone. They get a ten: for both freshness and presentation. From there we move on to the sashimi—probably my favorite part of the meal. Thick cuts of blue fin tuna and hamachi (yellowtail) are presented before us on a Japanese-style dish, and I can hardly hold myself back from grabbing one while Octavio explains what’s what. The tuna is to die for, really. And the hamachi’s the butteriest fish I have ever tasted—it’s so good, it might as well be dessert. The raw portion of our dinner is over, and I’m a bit disappointed, until I see the grilled octopus. A black garlic paste paints the side of the plate like a canvas, making for top-notch presentation, with the exquisitely grilled octopus positioned in the center atop a ratatouille-like veggie mix. The texture is tender, and absolutely not chewy like similar dishes I’ve tried. In fact, it’s so good that my mom tries to convince Octavio to share his recipe—no luck. Instead, he brings us stories about his passion for cooking, along with scallops and a rib eye steak bone-in steak. So, all is forgiven thanks to the juicy and tender flavors. After a beyond-filling dinner that ended with us closing the restaurant—that can happen when a mother and daughter get together for a few drinks—we head back to our heavenly blue room. I opt for continuing the “treat yourself ” mantra of the dinner, and grab a “muscle ache” bath bomb from the array of options in the bathroom cabinet, and drift off into bliss. The pre-bedtime ritual sends me into an immediate dreamy state, as soon as I lay down on the cloud-like bed. It’s the best sleep I’ve had in months. After parting ways with my mom I grab a latte and a croissant by the pool, which is from the original construction, perhaps explaining the petite size. Nonetheless, the area is charming. Yet, the real wonder is the 86 | MAY/JUNE 2018
fact that it basically sits on the sand, providing sunbathers with a front and center view of the grand Pacific Ocean, and the many runners, yogis, and most likely celebrities that frequent the spot. After doing a little work (read: more people-watching than work), I’m off to my massage. From an extensive menu, which offers variations of anti-aging treatments and trendy massages, like hot stones, I select my classic go-to, a Swedish massage. Dana is sweet, attentive, and as most great sessions go, puts me into a euphoric state that teeters on the edge of sleep. I leave the spa rejuvenated, yet finding it hard to get the motivation to checkout of the hotel, in order to make my next appointment. A night of fresh seafood dining, a glorious bath, and a massage to top it all off somehow made my traffic-ridden drive tolerable. Did I just find the solution to dealing with LA traffic?! They say, there’s no place like home, but in the case of Casa del Mar, that may be a good—no, great— thing, because I’d gladly relocate for the chance to call this oceanside wonder, my own.

here is this inexplicable feeling, a pit at the bottom of your stomach, some call it butterflies, when your plane departs the ground. Energy and potential are all present, you’re excited. It’s the limitless opportunity that exists at the beginning of every trip that elevates the flying experience. The opportunities are endless, the possibilities only restricted by our imaginations. A sea of travelers all bound for unique experiences yet sharing this immense feeling. We all have travel companions, but once this year, leave the buddy pass at home. Find your own destination and see what the wide world holds for you and your predilections. I’ve chosen to rest my toes on Medano Beach at the Hacienda Beach Club and Residences, for three rounds I’ve been teeter tottering with myself over frozen or on the rocks, which is the better margarita? This philosophical inquest only hampered by my waning sobriety, the glowing sunset behind Land’s End and the Cabo San Lucas Marina, and of course last call at the beach bar. My rumination has been replaced by an appetite and before long I’m tucked into a corner booth at Hacienda Cocina y Cantina. The cast of evening light leaves the sky, replaced by a midnight blue in the low-lit dining room. I order a Tamarindo Margarita, in the blink of an eye the bar man’s lighting hands have my drink table side. In one sip my debate is answered—on the rocks or frozen isn’t of importance, what matters is the flavors, and this margarita owns flavor. Tamarind puree, fresh squeezed lime, sugar cane syrup, and a chile dust rim all molded together in a perfect balance of fresh, full flavors.
88 | MAY/JUNE 2018
I order the Hacienda Salad, with tamarind dressing. Like the margarita, I’m wowed. Crisp and fresh ingredients accented by the sharp sweet and sour tamarind dressing. The spiced pecans elevate it from lukewarm to Mexican picante. For my main course I have the Tinga de Pollo (chicken gorditas) and a final margarita. The last taste of the evening is much like the first, I’m contented on Mexican fare and regional specialty margaritas. My eyes are bigger than my appetite and as I’m leaving I remind myself to return for the chocolate churros. In the morning I’m up early, having coffee poolside, the cast of light a sun salutation offering before a day exploring the town. I have a soft goal of movement, other than that I want nothing more than a spontaneous day. After a quick swim in the pool and an egg white omelet at the Cantina I’m exiting the Beach Club into downtown— you can’t beat this location. My destination: the marina and anywhere else my feet can carry me. The marina is for anyone who appreciates yachts and the people watching is top notch. I wander aimlessly in awe, not only with the yachts but the endless line of luxury shopping, dining and tour offerings. The marina is unlike any other I’ve set foot on. There are street vendors and storefronts every other step. If you have a buoyant imagination you could find any experience needed just a few steps away from the Beach Club entrance. I tend to hide behind my camera when I travel, I’m not sure if it’s the margaritas coursing through my veins from last night’s debate or the

general comfort and ease of Cabo, but I feel social. I interact with almost every vendor, buckets of beer offered one step and full-day fish tours the next. The day can go in any direction. I end up wading through booths full of handmade trinkets, landing on colorful skull salt and pepper shakers for a SB collector and cactus shot glasses for my mom’s growing collection. The vendor adds gifts to my basket when I’m not looking, I’m her only patron at the moment and she’s all in for a big sale.
and beer special. I venture further than intended down side avenues and end up marveling at the architecture, an inactive amphitheater and murals by local artists. I wind up near the Marina Mercado, a labyrinth of overstocked vendors with anything and everything you could imagine. After this I realize I’ve shopped too much and beeline for the coast.
I wander down side streets marveling at the developments and the overall cleanliness of every square inch. I’ve never set foot in a cleaner part of Mexico. I meet an American transplant who has been vacationing in Cabo for over 30 years. He walks me up and down a few of the local avenues and tells me about his personal Cabo timeline. Many of his details are lost on me as we meander through shops with authentic wooden masks, everyday bobble-heads and an endless assortment of Cabo Ts. He’s friendly beyond belief and when we part ways I feel inspired to begin my own Cabo history book.
I wander past fishermen filleting their catch, a window taco shop that only accepts pesos, and eventually reach the Mt. Solmar hike trail head. I’m full of energy and hit the trail running. Upon cresting the first hill I’m rewarded with a Land’s End view worth its weight in margaritas. The trail starts as an unused road and tapers into a rustic single track. The final accent is steep and requires a bit of scrambling but with the summit, adorned with a white cross, in sight I quicken my pace, out of breath I crest the rise. The ocean breeze cools my face, a few sips of water and I’m perched on a rock slab looking across the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. I can make out ant sized people meandering across the vast beach that stretches before me.
I stop at Giggling Bean Coffee and supplement my caffeine needs with a tall iced coffee. I’m on a tourist buzz and find a street side taco

is easy to spot with its yellow stucco walls, tiered pools and beach front position. There are only three groups at the summit, we share an uninterrupted panoramic view that goes on forever. It takes me no time at all to venture back to Hacienda Beach Club. I’m tempted to hail a water taxi but instead retrace my steps from earlier in the day. The leisurely happiness of the other tourists is contagious and by the time I’m back in my room I feel refreshed. I spend the late afternoon reading on the beach and swimming in the ocean. The water is a crushing color of blue I’ve never experienced before, the intensity of the color only matched by the refreshing feel of crisp water. 92 | MAY/JUNE 2018
Seeking out a unique dinner experience, the concierge recommends a private in-room dining. A few hours later, with a knock at my door I’m in my residence being treated to a yellow fin tuna dinner by Chef Raul. Every ingredient spread across my kitchen counter is from local farms and the fish is fresh caught. He begins with an heirloom tomato salad with tuna sashimi. Every dish is hand prepared while Chef Raul and I discuss the hotel and other hobbies. Following the salad is tuna tartare with mashed avocado, coriander, lemon zest, and lemon juice mixed with salt and olive oil. He uses many of the same ingredients in each dish and I marvel at his ingenuity and the wide array of flavors. The final course is a seared tuna steak with a sesame crust. This is the meal I’ve been imagining since landing in Mexico.
For dessert Chef Raul treats me to an in-residence mezcal tasting. In a short yet informative hour I learn more than can be recorded about mezcal and taste six variations. The first lesson I learn is that if you treat mezcal right, mezcal will treat you right. Every plant produces a different flavor. We try “Amores” with a mild yet full flavor and a subtle sweetness, next “Wahaka”—very smooth with a lingering bitterness, followed by “Amaras” which is green and crispy with an intense body and spice forward nose. I’m quickly getting lost in the flavors as Chef Raul interjects with interesting knowledge about each label. By the completion of the tasting my palate has done somersaults and is appeased to no end. In the morning I fully enjoy my residence. Taking the time to read and have leisure time on my personal veranda with one eye constantly on the incredible view. The residence offers a never ending sliding glass door that tucks into the wall, once it’s out of sight you have an unblemished panorama before you. Until now I haven’t fully appreciated the master suite’s handcrafted furnishings and natural finishes. I could stay here all day but the margarita mixer is calling. I have a longer than usual breakfast at the Cantina, I make the mistake of requesting a “picante” sauce, which is like fire. Tread lightly on the hot sauce, I promise you will be impressed more with the flavor of the mild. My morning is spent in a leisurely capacity. I shake hands with some of the beachside vendors, looking over their wares half heartedly (my suitcase is already brimming) and before long half the day has been offered to the sun.
My afternoon appointment is at the on-property spa for a stone massage treatment. I’ve received quite a few massages in my lifetime but nothing like this. She immediately expands the range of motion of my shoulders with waves of stone and hand pressure. The timing and intricate balance of palm and stone is perfect. I’m in a trance, captivated by the soothing presence of hot stones, falling water and exotic aromas. I exit the massage feeling rejuvenated and full of life. I’m back in residence, torn between ventures on the town and the sanctuary of relaxing in my room. I dine a la carte from the room service menu. Calamari and ice cold Tecates are all I need. The evening is spent watching party goers come and go on a florescent sail boat. I haven’t been this content in a long time and that’s the exact feeling I needed from this southern excursion. I’m not one for lounging on the beach for endless hours. I get restless. I want to hike to the summit of the nearest peak, or search out some hidden taco bar. However at Hacienda Beach Club and Residences an immense feeling of mañana sets in. A land of tomorrow feeling, where nothing is better than lounging on the beach, debating the questions of life, margarita in hand of course, and an explicit sunset cast across the sky.

PARIS is always a good idea Written by Ottocina Ryan

I’ve heard that Paris is a magical place. I lived there for a year, and I knew the best vintage shops and metro lines by heart, yet I wanted to experience the enchanting side of Paris I’d only gotten glimpses of in between school work, grocery shopping and train tickets out of the city. The opulent hotels, old architecture, sitting at corner cafes for hours on end. I wanted to take photos of the Arc de Triomphe and eat room service on a hotel balcony overlooking the Eiffel Tower. So on a whim I booked a dream vacation with my friend Johanna. A week of must-sees, local spots and hotels that would make it hard to step foot outside to begin with. Paris done right.
Blacklane
We land at CDG, happy to be off the plane and away from the Great Dane (seriously) that shared our row, and thanking ourselves for reserving a Blacklane car and not having to deal with the taxi line. We spot our driver at baggage claim and he carries our bags to his Mercedes. We guzzle the lemon water he has waiting for us and settle in for the 30 minute drive. First stop: The Peninsula Paris. Entering the lobby, 800 crystal leaves cascade from the ceiling and marble pillars are abundant. The front desk agent greets us with room keys and a touch of French humor. Our suite is a perfect balance of French grandeur and modern Asian technology. It even has a nail dryer, which was put to good use. As was the black marble bathtub overlooking The Peninsula’s courtyard. We drop our bags and walk to the Eiffel Tower, I think it’s a rule that that’s the first thing you do when arriving in
98 | MAY/JUNE 2018
Paris. After a couple hours of wandering around, we quickly discover that The Peninsula has a pool (very rare for Paris hotels), a true oasis in a city where you’d be lucky to find a drinking fountain. We fit in a swim surrounded by tiny iridescent blue tiles before dinner. Famished, we head downstairs to LiLi, The Peninsula’s Chinese fine dining restaurant. We opt for the seven course tasting menu; crab and lobster dumplings topped with caviar give way to pumpkin soup with scallops, prawns, clams, and crab. Our server lifts the lids off of each pot like she’s revealing a surprise. We wrap up the meal with a light yet memorable dessert of lemon and lychee panna cotta with vanilla whipped cream. Not ready to turn in (if you can’t beat jet lag, make the most of it) we take the elevator to L’Oiseau Blanc—the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar named for the plane that mysteriously disappeared in 1927 attempting a transatlantic flight from Paris to New York. Cocktails in hand we step out onto the balcony and cheers to being in Paris as the clock strikes 2 a.m. and the Eiffel Tower sparkles in clear view—a sight that never gets old and is just as mesmerizing every time.
The Peninsula Paris
In the morning Johanna raises the blackout blinds via iPad (everything in the room, down to the do not disturb sign, is electronic) and I shuffle over to the valet box—like a dumb waiter and my favorite feature of the room—to collect our “morning paper” selection, Vogue Paris. Cafe Otto
Pavilion de la Reine
We walk downstairs to Le Lobby for breakfast. One of the main things I notice has changed in Paris the past six years in how much more health conscious the city seems to be. I order the Wellness Breakfast of avocado toast, berries, chia seed pudding, and goji berry juice. Johanna, who was almost too excited for breakfast to sleep, orders the eggs Benedict, accompanied by a platter of pastries and baguettes. No pastry goes untasted and nothing in the US could ever compare to how delicious they are. Once we can’t possibly eat another croissant, we hop on the metro to meet Elisa, who was the magazine’s Marketing Director three years ago and since moved back home to Paris, for tea at Hyatt Place Vendôme. After a peek in the jewelry stores and the flagship Louis Vuitton store lining Place Vendôme, we catch up over fresh peppermint tea and financiers. Elisa gives us helpful tips—don’t take line 13 on the metro, the 11th is the trendiest arrondissement right now—and mentions a couple new restaurants and spas to try. We take her recommendations and set off. We spend the next few days wandering around Paris, with no plans and nowhere to be. By the end of the trip my phone says we walked 100 | MAY/JUNE 2018
45 miles. We explore the cute cobblestone streets and panoramic city views of Montmartre. We stop in tiny cafes, Baguete Cafe with its fairy lights, rustic decor and golden milk (warm coconut milk, turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger) was a favorite. We shop at the department stores…Le Bon Marche and its foodie counterpart La Grande Epicerie on the left bank, and Printemps and Galeries Lafayette on the right bank. We sit outside at brasseries and watch Paris transform into a painting with pink fluffy clouds as the sun sets behind ancient buildings. Come Saturday we brunch at Cafe Otto in the 18th arrondissement. Greeted by Chef Lisa, an Austrian transplant, I settle into the hunter green velvet booth and order fluffy pancakes topped with honey, sesame seeds, blueberries, and yogurt. Who would have thought the best pancakes I’d have in my life would be in the land of crêpes. Johanna orders smoked salmon on toast and a salad topped with crab. Everything is so fresh and the atmosphere is quaint and refreshing. We finish off the meal with apple strudel with Chantilly cream, from Lisa’s grandmother’s recipe.
Pavilion de la Reine @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 101
We return to The Peninsula to enjoy the rooftop view one last time before checking out and moving to Le Marais for a few days. Stepping into Le Pavillon de la Reine hotel is like entering a secret garden. It’s located off of Place des Vosges, a beautiful square lined with contemporary art galleries. Each of the 56 rooms is unique. Light floods into our lofted suite through a floor-to-ceiling window which opens to a balcony overlooking the entry courtyard. A burnt orange couch and multicolored striped chairs pop against black and white patterned wallpaper and carpet, creating a sophisticated yet fascinating home away from home. To get the lay of the land we walk along the Siene, venturing over to Île Saint-Louis and gazing in awe at Notre-Dame Cathedral. We stop at concept store Merci to peruse whimsical displays showcasing everything from clothes to plates to toothpaste. Eventually, we are lured into a bakery by meringues the size of our heads and topped with dried raspberries and pistachios. We buy two and take them back to the hotel to break through to the gooey centers. Sunday morning we walk to Derrière for Champagne brunch. Hidden in a courtyard behind giant green doors, you’d have to know it’s there. Once inside, the atmosphere is lively, filled with animated diners, eclectic decor and mounds of books just waiting to avalanche downs the stairs. A ping pong ball dribbles under our table as we indulge in artisanal cheeses, fresh fruit, and slices of lemon meringue and pear tarts from the buffet. I order foie gras with homemade black cherry jam followed by fish stew packed with seasonal vegetables. The food is 102 | MAY/JUNE 2018
beyond delicious, yet the best part of Derrière is the beds upstairs, the edges serving as seats. Or perfect for a nap. Jet lag is inevitable, choose your restaurants wisely. After brunch we make our way to a row of colorful pastel houses on Rue Crémieux in the 12th arrondissement for, you know, Instagram reasons. We spend the afternoon walking around, strolling down intriguing streets. Salted caramel macarons from Pâtisserie Sadaharu Aoki hold us over until dinner at La Vague in the 10th arrondissement. There is not a tourist in sight at the ten table restaurant. Our personable server translates the Japanese-Peruvian fusion menu as we sip passion fruit pisco sours. The ceviche dishes are almost too beautiful to eat, sprinkled with edible flowers, and incredibly flavorful. A welcome interruption in our pursuit to eat all of the sweets in Paris. Around 9 p.m. we return to Pavilion de la Reine’s lounge furniture filled lobby to a beautiful sight for sore feet—a crackling fireplace and an honesty bar in the library. Come morning the lobby is set up with a buffet of fruit, pastries and all the fixings for the perfect tartine. We enjoy a leisurely breakfast until it’s time to check out. For our final couple days in Paris we rest our heads at Hôtel Plaza Athénée. The iconic red awnings and geranium filled planters welcome us. The lobby is buzzing with guest dressed to the nines and messengers with long stemmed roses and shopping bags.

Alain Ducasse Restaurant
In our suite fresh pink roses and gold painted chocolate slabs molded into our zodiac signs await our arrival. There personalized touches are endless and the suite offers unobstructed views of the Eiffel Tower from every room—whether playing piano or laying in bed. Nothing to make you feel like you’ve done something right in your life like taking a bath with an unparalleled view of the Eiffel Tower. Convinced that nothing outside the hotel is more magical than the ice rink that fills the garden courtyard during winter months, we sit and watch children skating against a backdrop of Christmas trees and walls covered in vines. As if the Plaza Athénée could get any better, we discover the Dior Institut—their elegant spa which could not be more appealing after a day of sightseeing. Breakfast our final morning is just off the lobby at Alain Ducasse. Glittering chandeliers spread across the ceiling, hovering over futuristic seating. Our table is covered in pastries, yogurt, fruit, and coffee. I tear open a pink sugared brioche to reveal a bright red berry puree center. Johanna orders French toast (when in Paris) and I get the smoothest, richest, fluffiest wild mushroom omelette that ever existed. After packing we decide you can’t leave Paris without chocolate so we stop at La Maison du Chocolat on Avenue des Champs-Élysées for chocolate filled macarons and award-winning traditional chocolates. I pick out a box to take home with the help of the staff who seems to not just eat, but live and breathe chocolate.
Dior Institut
In the Blacklane car back to the airport, I reflect on the trip. It was really the hotels that elevated this experience above my previous time in Paris. They weren’t just a place to sleep, they were summaries of the neighborhoods, highlighting the best and leaving the familiar mundane outside. They allowed me to see somewhere I used to call home in a new light, or at least through a window with a better view.
