Located on East Valley Road, an enchanting gate embellished with two sentinel lions stands nestled amid the scenic Santa Ynez Mountains and Montecito’s Upper Village. Not yet inviting us in, but not yet ceasing to captivate our curiosity either, the iron gates, emblazoned with gold writing, read “La Casa del Sueño.” Literally translating to “House of Dreams,” the 8,500-squarefoot Mediterranean estate designed by the famed architect Reginald Johnson in 1917, did not fully come to life until its second owner, Amy du Pont acquired the property in 1930. Eager to captivate the decadent Montecito charm the estate possesses, the SBLS team crafted an afternoon of timeless glamour, opulent fashion and scrumptious desserts that had us salivating!

In 1974, Burl Ives—America’s greatest balladeer—and his wife Dorothy purchased the estate once belonging to du Pont. Dorothy Ives, formerly an interior decorator, felt the home needed some minor detail changes, but felt compelled to keep the estate in its original condition. “I felt the love and warmth of the house when I first stepped in the door.” Dorothy, described as a vivacious blond, greeted houseguests with no less than six dogs at heal. “Most of the changes were to small areas—like the kitchen. I did add a deck upstairs, a downstairs terrace and some small windows were transformed into French doors.” Today the mostly unchanged grounds boast six-bedrooms and seven-baths, ocean and mountain views, horse stables and corral, guest house/entertainment pavilion and a putting green.

amara Kaye-Honey’s interior design studio, House of Honey, may be new to the neighborhood, but that hasn’t stopped her from demanding a presence. Tell us a little about your custom lighting line that you just launched!
Your taste is impeccable, where do you find inspiration?
Lighting is everything! I think it’s the most important design element in a space and truly sets the tone. It not only grounds an interior but gives it that point of view and originality. Without good lighting, a space is unfinished and uninspiring. (Yes, I mean it!!!) My new line is a mix of old and new, shiny and dull, lux and simple – all in one! The collection is inspired by 1960 and 70s lighting – so playful, yet sophisticated!
I find inspiration comes from chaos and change. I feel like if a design, be it a product or space, doesn’t make me slightly uncomfortable in the process, it’s too simple or obvious. I like to keep challenging myself and my ...if a design, be it team and really a product or space, my clients as doesn’t make me well. I love that slightly uncomfortable every day is a in the process, it’s too new adventure. simple or obvious. Because we are working in product, commercial, and residential design along with retail, we are never bored!
My 1970s Parrot chair by I B Arberg! It’s form is both strong and linear, yet it is truly witty. It’s like a big wink! We have one in our kids playroom and it’s one of my special pieces that I would never sell on 1stdibs! You sell purses, toothpaste, headphones etc.; I feel like I have anything and everything I could ever need right here in your store. Tell me a little about the concept behind HOH. I opened House Of Honey as I felt there was a void in the market for a chic shop that carried a curated selection of reinvented home furnishings, contemporary finds, and decorative accessories. The House of Honey concept is based on the idea of a lifestyle that is full of personality, humor and of course, style.
“
What is your favorite piece in your home?
“
Tell us one thing you love about the Santa Barbara lifestyle. I love the laidback, yet refined style. I think House of Honey has a distinctive personality that is a wonderful addition to the beautiful shops in the area. My sensibility is eclectic and soulful, which I think reflect the SB lifestyle.

O
ne of the conundrums Santa Barbarians face on a daily basis is, where to get the latest home furnishings needed to complete our own personal retreat. Just beyond the iron gates at Cabana Home, our design troubles are put to rest! Filled with patio furniture, luxe lighting, and immaculate home goods and bedding, this hidden gem is a sanctuary for the ultimate interior decorator. Whether you actually are an interior decorator or not is not important as Steve and Caroline Thompson have created a treasure filled showroom you are bound to be obsessed with. Cabana Home, located in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone, offers an array of furnishings, fabrics, and antiques carefully selected by the Thompsons themselves. For the design duo, it’s “quality first. Design and options second”—and it shows. Luxury and understated elegance is aplenty in this ultra chic space, transporting us into another world where we envision ourselves lounging in haute couture, while sipping on glass of bubbly.

mong the amazing items you’ll find at CH, perhaps the most popular are their gorgeous, one-of-a-kind fabrics. “We have one of the largest fabric libraries between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and we sell fabrics for upholstery and window coverings,” says Steve. Cabana Home carries upholstery lines including Palecek, Pearson, and Baker, just to name a few. So what inspires the couple? “First the Client! The room or design must reflect them, so our first job is to elicit from them their ideas for the room, then help them develop a plan to get there efficiently, and eliminating potential mistakes.” Choose from sexy leopard print pillows or an ornate quartz table lamp, the Thompson duo truly caters to the client’s every need and has fun doing it. Currently trending in the Cabana Home showroom? Greys. “Grey is the new neutral. Shades of grey run from creamy greys to taupe greys. We are the best store if you don’t want your house to look like it came from a catalogue.” The showroom exudes modern elegance with a twist of sexy chic and we are officially in love!

For Steve and Caroline Thompson, this is more than a labor of love, it’s a way of life: “We sit on every seat; examine every finish right in the showroom or factory. When someone asks if we’ve ever sat on a particular piece, we can look him or her in the eye and say yes! We are hands on, from start to finish.”

HUDSON GRACE
Photographed by Meadow Rose Photography and Silas Fallstich
“Clean. Simple. Elevated.” These are the words used by Monelle Totah of Hudson Grace to describe the aesthetic behind the new design studio in Montecito.
Co-owners, Monelle Totah and Gary McNatton have recently expanded their minimalistic, yet sophisticated taste to the beautiful Central Coast. Located in the newly renovated Montecito Country Mart, Hudson Grace lies situated amongst some of the coveted retail and home good boutiques. “We were struck by the beauty of the town of Montecito. After looking in Los Angeles, we fell in love with the size and the scale of the center, the curated shops and location near the most beautiful homes in California,” says Totah.
Because Montecito does have some of the most yearned for real estate, it makes sense that Hudson Grace would bring the casual elegance they are most known for to our beachside village. “Gary is a minimalist and I am a collector,” Totah explains. “We have great respect for each of our aesthetics.” With Totah’s collector’s expertise and McNatton’s “dead on simplicity,” the harmony that exists between Hudson Grace’s owners is what gives the design studio its refined balance and delicacy.

n time for the holidays, Hudson Grace sells all your furnishing essentials needed to transform a house into a home. “Key trends” and tips from Totah herself include mixing old with the new and including oversized serve pieces for gatherings. Fit to complete their social gatherings is their very own Hudson Grace organic dinnerware; cathedral candles and oversized serving pieces. Also included amongst essentials for home décor are vintage silver pieces and Gio Ponte flatware. Inspired by beautiful products, homes and the perfect dinner party, Hudson Grace carries something special for the interior designer in all of us. With two locations in Northern California (Larkspur and San Francisco,) Totah and McNatton were inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle for their third store location. We love “the natural beauty, the love for environment, the perfect temperature” explains Totah. How could we disagree? Santa Barbara does have everything we could ever need, and now with our very own Hudson Grace, what more could we possibly ask for? What is the perfect housewares gift for the person who has everything? Our candle fragrance aptly named Montecito, created in March when we moved into our space, Gary experienced the green jasmine buds, yet to bloom, the eucalyptus oil washed into the earth and the scent of cedar – at that moment we knew what Montecito smelled like –(it launches this week)!
