Letter

from the

Editor It is 6:30 on Thursday evening as I enjoy a bittersweet end to our last full day in Cabo—I know, not Santa Barbara, but bear with me for this issue’s awe-inspiring travel story. Tonight I am grateful to be sitting on the balcony of The Cape, perched over infinity pools, enamored by breathtaking views of the ocean. With this time to rest, I open my Macbook for the first time since 10:00 this morning to check up on what I have been missing, and find images from Chris and Carly from photoshoots earlier in the week. The talent, creativity, styling, and editing epitomizes the beauty I am passionate about in fashion editorial. As hard as it will be to kiss the Cabo sun and sand goodbye, these images make me excited to return to the work that waits for me back in Santa Barbara. The wonderful thing about Santa Barbara is that as summer becomes fall, we can enjoy preparing our new wardrobes without completely retiring our bikinis, thanks to weather that provides us with an endless summer. We stay local in our visit to the Lazy Hummingbird bungalows, where the living is easy in tranquil Summerland. A celebration of Santa Barbara is not complete without a meal at the Bacara’s new modern restaurant, Angel Oak. Its trendy interior and panoramic views of the ocean will transport you on a vacation without having to leave Goleta. Our journey through Santa Barbara’s seaside treasures transitions into fall in the Valley with Home on the

Ranch, where we step into bohemian dresses and denim on our safari through St. Francis Ranch. With fall fashion on our brain, we enter the realm of J. Hilburn, where menswear tailoring and styling are TJ’s cultivated passion. Then, never one to say no to a delectable treat, enjoy the pastels of Sweet Thing, as colorful off the shoulder blouses and Gauthier jewels take the cake. Naturally, beauty and wellness are components of the Santa Barbara lifestyle. Raise your glass with us in Cheers to Beautiful Skin, as we are delighted to share that the elements in red wine dually offer the latest in skincare and wrinkle prevention. We say a special thanks to the Wellness Tribe, a local company that delivers cutting-edge health products right to your mailbox, making natural-living effortless. Finally, our issue praises the sweetest young girls making a big difference in their own backyard of Santa Ynez, as their influential anti-bullying campaign impacts the lives of others. The entrepreneurs and philanthropists we celebrate in this issue embody the spirit of Santa Barbara Life and Style, which is spearheaded by young creatives collaboratively sharing their passions for fashion, design, writting and photography. Let the refined styles and unique talents of this issue transition you into fall, as we happily say hello to new beginnings.

Heaven

BY THE SEA

I

’m sitting at a small square table nestled right next to the glass wall of the patio, giving us a coveted view of the Santa Barbara coast. It is only 6 p.m., early for a Saturday dinner, allowing ample time to enjoy the evening before the sun sets. The Bacara offers delicious cuisines around the resort, ranging from huge brunch spreads to light, appetizing meals you can enjoy outside of the spa. Along with these options, the resort recently elevated its meal fare to the next level with its new steak and seafood restaurant, Angel Oak. Walking into the long, tall archway of Angel Oak, I was immediately impressed by the restaurant’s design and presentation. It is a modern and stylish restaurant, pulsing with energy amidst the tranquil resort. My coworker, Ottocina, and I were greeted with warm, friendly smiles and led past unique black and white earthy photographs by Keith Dotson. His artwork complements the restaurant’s sleek, sophisticated atmosphere. We walked around the spacious bar, situated in the middle of the restaurant, practically beckoning couples to enjoy a cocktail after a long day spent in the sun. Our friendly waiter Sasha promptly introduces himself. His enthusiasm for Chef Vincent Lesage’s menu is engaging, urging me to pick his brain about the eclectic choices ranging from Asian-inspired halibut crudo to pancetta-wrapped dates. We settle on a couple cocktails and are presented with warm bread rolls covered in a light parmesan cheese and a beautiful, soft pink butter, homemade with honey, sea salt and pepper. I sip on my Tequila Highball, and let the ginger and citrus infused beverage transport me on a muchdesired tropical staycation for the evening.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 25

After perusing the menu, I decide to play it safe with the heirloom tomatoes coupled with burrata, while Ottocina makes a bold move and orders the pancetta wrapped dates. The tomatoes are a sweet reminder of summer in California, coming straight from Ellwood Canyon Farm in Goleta. The burrata melts delicately into the tomato, making it a light and crisp appetizer. The pancetta wrapped dates are paired with a tzatziki house-made yogurt dip, evoking a Mediterranean quality that reflects our relaxing, vacation-inspired experience. For our main course, we each indulge in seafood as the sun begins to set, casting a pink glow over the ocean. Our entrees are served swiftly after the appetizers are cleared, and I delve into my King Salmon prepared with creamed corn, smoked blackberry gastrique and crunchy hominy. The salmon flakes off delicately and the smooth creamed corn makes it more delectable with each bite. Of course, no dinner is complete without the essential side dishes, which tend to be my favorite part of the meal. We decide on the wild mushrooms as recommended by Sasha. Served with a slow poached egg and chopped up bacon bits, these mushrooms are any foodie’s heaven. We cut into the egg and mix the running yolk into the mushrooms before taking a bite. The addition of the egg and crispy bacon transform this typical side dish into a savory treat, and I am nearly licking the bowl after polishing these off. Never one to say no to dessert, I am excited when Sasha explains many of the desserts are prepared in Chef Vincent’s unique style. I’m sold on the “Candy Bar” once he mentions this dessert is finished off with hot chocolate poured over the sea salt caramel ice cream. Ottocina indulges in the Baked Alaska which Sasha lights on fire right at the table. The engaging, interactive dining experience makes the dessert taste even sweeter, and I savor each bite. The Bacara easily transports me to paradise each time I visit, making the name Angel Oak a perfect fit for their new restaurant. With its beautiful location, delectable food, and attractive interior, Angel Oak effortlessly provides the essential seaside escape experience.

ou can conclude many things about a man in a matter of seconds. Tonight’s conclusions are based on pleated shirts and eyeing the perfect fitted suit, one that projects sophistication from across the bar. TJ Breidenstein, fashion buyer and stylist from Allora by Laura, fills me in on the following metaphor as we make our mark on two Adirondack chairs outside of Honor Bar, her much deserved Tito’s Martini with blue cheese stuffed olives in hand. If a man whispers he is in a loose laid back denim shirt. If he talks, he’s in a fitted button-up that makes a statement of poise. And if he shouts, he’s in all white and might be found in the Hamptons. Whisper, talk or shout. Intrigued, I sip my grape and basil infused cocktail and listen in for more. TJ exudes a confidence about seams and fabrics; she is the type I want dissecting my closet. As her eyes light up, I immediately grasp men’s clothing isn’t something she found a passion in overnight, as she displays more assertion than in our initial greeting. I find that passion is what differentiates exhaustion from excitement, and she is excited to spill her talent into this endeavor. Along with her full-time position at Allora by Laura, TJ tackles the complexity of menswear by combining specific measurements, Italian linens and patterns for J. Hilburn. The company, started in Dallas by a group of Wall Street gurus, holds the firm belief that not all men look good in a suit and TJ agrees. “You see those men wearing suits barely dusted off from their grandfather’s closet and you think, what are you doing?” I laugh, because I couldn’t agree more. J. Hilburn custom made garments aren’t created from brief alterations, but molded by personalized fittings, precise measurements, and a selection from seemingly endless fabric options. TJ’s knowledge about each and every detail of wardrobe makes me a girl with sensible style, but not one who can analyze the right hem or swatch for any type of man. Affordability isn’t the only plus, TJ meets her clients at their convenience in the comforts of their own office. TJ’s compassion derives from her character and she is genuinely dedicated to making her clients feel confident in their clothing. Speaking in fashion lingo only, her expertise radiates, and I undoubtedly know she can transform anyone into someone of stature. In a world where fashion is easily accessible to females, J. Hilburn has an authenticity and appreciation for outfitting men well too. Finishing our cocktails and easing into a conversation not entirely directed towards men or fashion, I walk away with a promise to you. TJ knows what looks good, on just about anyone.

ENDLESS SUMMER Architectural Photography by Thomas Hart Shelby Food Photoragphy by Francisco Estrada Written by Robin Berger

T

he sunny and sweltering heat is in tow as I wheel my suitcase into a sophisticated and sunfilled playground of exotic palms and bare feet. Stamped passport in hand I’m greeted at The Cape, A Thompson Hotel with a friendly “Hola,” the sound of crashing waves and a ginger refreshment to clench as my anxiety from the bumpy landing into Los Cabos dissipates. A sea breeze cultivates throughout the lobby and I’m ready to hop into a swimsuit and explore the grandiose property.

74 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 75

The bellman’s energetic smile is contagious as we make our way up the swanky elevator and down an exterior hallway. The suite’s industrial touches create a sleek contrast to the desert meets ocean landscape. The aroma of fresh air and sea salt wisps through the floor to ceiling windows. The scene is almost imaginary, like that one dream you wish wasn’t interrupted by a 7 o’clock alarm. I saunter around the teal and white tiles and locate a complimentary bottle of top shelf tequila, a necessity when jetting off to Mexico. Bikini on, I look down to the two infinity pools, hidden cabanas and reef like rocks in the surrounding remoteness. The swinging sofa on my balcony has me debating if leaving the room is required. Yet the infinity pools lure me down to take a dip, with a backdrop of untouched sand and whitecaps. Refreshed and invigorated I let the sun-kissed air dry the droplets of water off my skin. I doze off in a cabana to a dreamland not far from this reality.

76 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

As sunset nears and my skin is a couple shades darker, I throw on a fuchsia dress and meander to the rooftop where dining and drinks are as endless as the panoramic view. The dim sky enhances the romantic ambiance set by the canopied bar and plethora of cozy seating. I pick my spot, a circular chair with orange cushions and, from my gaze, the best seat in the resort. I order the Señor Ramos which has mint lychee gin, cream of coconut, tonic, and is topped with crushed allspice. Sipping my cocktail, the sun is setting and the scene is captured through lantern like chandeliers and drooping lights. I order the artisan cheese and prosciutto board and delightfully indulge on brie and goat cheese with sourdough crisps. For an entrée I enjoy the almond crusted shrimp tacos with serrano chile marmalade, which are bedded Von flour tortillas and taste like the goto taco of summer. A full stomach later, and as relaxed and content as possible, I rinse off in the luxurious glass waterfall shower. Sand swirls down the drain, and I’m one tan line closer to my summer goal. Waking up to the warm breeze, I take all of four steps and reach the million-dollar view of the iconic arch of Cabo San Lucas. I settle into the couch swing and get lost in my summer must-read. After finishing a couple chapters, I pull on my Lululemons and head to the gym. If you’ve ever seen those treadmills that let you choose a setting in which you’d like to “run in,” this glass-walled gym and yoga studio, with a line of treadmills almost on the beach, tops them all. No setting needed. I can hear the waves crashing through my Apple music and the local surfers distract me from my workout. When my run comes to an end I gulp the fruit infused ice water and accept that the Bay Club back home will never feel the same. I know my next move involves a bikini, a margarita and a lounge chair—definitely the one already dipped in the pool.

Make-up free and hair down, I plunge into the infinity pool that looks level with the horizon. I swim straight up to the open faced bar and sit halfway in the water, eyeing the bartender who I know has the key to the perfect on the rocks margarita. I ask him how he makes it so thirst quenching and subtly sweet in all the right ways. Apparently it’s simple and the Jose Cuervo mix in the States is not the answer. 2 ounces of tequila, a splash of agave, 2 limes, and orange Cointreau. I return to my lounger with no plan at all. These are the flashes of life worth remembering. A few freckles later I slip on a red wine colored silk dress and clog heels to make an appearance at The One&Only Palmilla Resort. From the minute I step on the property I find a tranquility far from the stereotype of Cabo. Warm hearts, calm smiles, and a level of service and extravagance that is out of this world. This hideaway is the true essence of luxury. I ride around the property on a golf cart and the jungle like landscaping and quiet pathways make me feel like the only guest. As the sun sets through the palm trees I enjoy a Serrano margarita at Agua Bar. Mixed with San Matias Blanco Tequila, Chile serrano, fresh lime, and pineapple, the spiciness matches the heat of the moment. The sky is an ombre of orange as I am guided to a cliffside oval table on the lawn at Agua, a restaurant headed by Chef Larbi Dahrouch and lined with palm trees and an ocean wave you’d think you could touch. SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 77

78 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

Settling in, I order a glass of Chardonnay and start with the Buffala Mozzarella Rustica and Heirloom Tomato Salad. The attentive service leaves no glass empty and no request unfulfilled. As the full moon rises, the restaurant’s mood switches to night and the plethora of ornate umbrellas light up like floating lamps. I order the Roasted Chilean Salmon and Asparagus with sautéed leeks and a chardonnay cream sauce, and prepare to be amazed. The fresh fish coats my palate with a buttery flavor which carries over to the leeks and asparagus. For dessert I order the Leche Quemada, which is burnt milk ice cream paired with lime sorbet and banana pound cake. The exceptional pound cake adds familiarity while the smoky ice cream and modern plating make it an exotic and memorable treat. I slowly walk back to the lobby and stop for a brief swing on a plush hammock strung between two palm trees before hopping in a taxi. And just like that, one more day in paradise dwindles into a daze. Another morning that doesn’t mirror a typical weekday, I wake with an energy that leads me to the remarkable gym. I’m mainly here for the view, I think. Eventually throwing on another suit and grabbing my book I head back to the pool. This might be the first book I actually have time to finish. Casual poolside

conversations are made and I order a mimosa and a beet salad to fix my afternoon hunger. The fresh cut vegetables and cold mimosa have me contemplating extending my stay. I walk down the beach and let the waves crash at my feet. This is not a bad office for the day, lucky is an understatement. For my final night in Mexico I decide to explore downtown Cabo San Lucas with new friends. It’s filled with cobblestone streets, live mariachi bands and an overflow of Americanized bars and restaurants. I even spot a Starbucks. I go for a light meal and order one last margarita for a trip deserving of a toast to new adventures, eclectic cultures and a destination worthy of a return. Awakening for my last morning I make my way to breakfast at Ledge and start with an iced coffee, a glass of green juice and fresh cut fruit. I customize a turkey bacon omelet with veggies and an assortment of cheeses. I really don’t want to leave. Packed, with a double checked passport in hand, I walk through the open air lobby and slowly approach my taxi to the airport. The Cape’s urban vibe and subtle hints of Mexican craft linger in the distance and I’ll remember this hip sanctuary as the only place in the world where I would never deny a workout.

Lazy Days

I

t’s a beautiful Monday afternoon as I pack my bags to drive 20 minutes south on the 101 from Santa Barbara to Summerland. The windows are down, the sun is shining, and my mother is co-pilot. The Jack Johnson song on the radio sets me in relaxation mode and I can’t help but crack a smile thinking about the ocean-side ambiance ahead. I call in pizza from the Honor Bar Market, and pull over in Montecito to pick up girls night essentials— McConnell’s Boysenberry Rosé Milk Jam and Vogue. As we drive into the little beach town and admire the shingled shops on Ortega Ridge Road, I already feel as though I am on vacation. We arrive at 2525 Banner Avenue where we are greeted by tall hedges, wooden steps and small sign that reads The Lazy Hummingbird. A tropical

and beachy atmosphere sets in while I cross a tree covered bridge and arrive at the Sky bungalow. As I insert the code into the door handle I cannot help but think how easy “check-in” is. Windows line the entire penthouse, and the ocean shines through every room. From the private deck, I look out to the front yard, a common lawn with four white Adirondack chairs for the guests of each of the three bungalows (Sand, Sky, and Surf) to enjoy and interact with each other. The property and the ocean are mesmerizing. I take a seat on the bench and the crisp breeze engenders a complete sense of harmony with my surroundings. It’s that time of day where everything seems to shine brighter and reflections are physically and mentally clearer.

I walk into the kitchen and see an island bearing a bottle of St. Rita Hills Pinot Noir. Two glasses and a wine opener are perfectly placed. The open shelves are filled with beautiful white dishes; the skylights and white subway tile complement the sleek highend stainless steel appliances. The bungalow is filled with local art pieces—vintage surfboard and palm tree photographs printed on wood, and oil paintings of rolling green hills are boldly beautiful on the crisp white walls. In the bedroom, there is a piece of art that reads “SumOhm-Land.” I know I chant Ohm at the end of a yoga session, but what does it really mean? It is a reminder that the entire universe is never still, but always moving. I can hear the sound of Ohm through the wind that blows through the penthouse—it is the silence that allows you to take in your inner thoughts and the moment. Which is exactly what I do. Meanwhile in the kitchen, my mom is opening our bottle of red wine, and making a salad to enjoy with the pizza. I contribute a few red tomatoes from the front yard garden—a touch that makes our salad. We enjoy our dinner on the balcony and stare into the soothing motions of the ocean.

To soak in the last of the sunlight, we ride the Lazy Hummingbird’s French cruiser bikes to Lookout Park and Summerland Beach. We are the only souls on the beach, it’s our own private paradise. The waves crash against the sand while the sun slowly sets, and I imagine living in Summerland. The smell of salty air would never tire. The feeling follows me home while I slowly ride up the hill and the sea breeze cools me down. The ocean views have vanished and bright moonlight surrounds us. We scroll the television for movies and come across one of my favorite Oscar winning films, Walk the Line. The film perfectly suits the chic, vintage vibe of the Sky bungalow. A guitar hangs above us and art of Louis Armstrong is placed beside us. Our girls night is now complete as I retrieve our McConnell’s ice cream and scoop my mother and I dishes. Before bed, I enjoy a hot bath in the freestanding bathtub, mixed with Kai bathing bubbles. I reflect and appreciate the details and décor of the Sky bungalow. The amount of creative energy and effort that went into making this remarkable rental inspires me.

We awake to the same gorgeous blue views and I am still stunned by the beauty of Summerland. While I have enjoyed plenty of day trips, spending the night is a significantly different experience. The short drive back to Santa Barbara allows me to reflect on my getaway and reminds me how lucky we are to be surrounded by the ocean. Because, a wise Pinterest pin once stated, “If you’re lucky enough to live by the ocean you’re lucky enough.”

CHEERS to beautiful skin!

“A

glass of Pinot Noir a day, keeps the doctor away, and keeps our skin young and beautiful,” is what we all should be chanting. Wine is a girl’s best friend; and whoever said we have to part may be unaware of the health benefits. A glass contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has revealed to prevent cancer, strengthen the immune system, lower heart disease, and contribute to striking skin. Good news just got better as I check off more reasons to enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir with dinner tonight. Resveratrol comes from the skin of grapes that are used to make red wine and it is a powerful compound filled with antioxidants. When the grapes grow on the vine, they encounter huge amounts of free radicals. During the photosynthesis stage, the grape seeds and fruit’s pigment create strong antioxidants in order to protect the plants against sources of major cellular damage from the free radicals. Then when we apply Resveratrol to the skin, the former photosynthesis shield serves as a guard against environmental stressors.

RESVERATROL BENEFITS: - Powerful anti-inflammatory - Improves circulation by strengthening blood vessels - Repairs sun damage - Rich in antioxidants - Improves fine lines and wrinkles - Improves texture - Protects skin from free radicals and sun damage - Helps create a radiant glow Resveratrol is found in red wine (specifically Pinot Noir), Skin Prophecy skincare products, such as moisturizers and serums, as well as body care products and supplements. All of these benefits support healthier, younger looking skin. Cheers to beautiful skin!

Get I

Wellthy

n this day and age, as technology has taken over, mail service feels like a thing of the past. No longer do we check our mailboxes giddy to receive letters from friends and family, instead we brace ourselves for the inpouring of bills and coupons. So, on Friday evening after a long day at work, coming home to open my mailbox is just another chore to cross off of my list. However, this Friday is different, this Friday a cute blue and green package with the words “Wellness Tribe” is there to greet me. Full of excitement and curiosity, I waste no time in ripping open the box and tearing through its contents. I had been counting down the days until my July Summer Box would arrive. I examine each and every product, determining its benefits. As someone who has never eaten a vitamin or used a moisturizer, I expected to be a little overwhelmed by the products, but sifting through the items, I am pleasantly surprised to find that I actually know what each one is. Instead of mystery liquids and unidentified lotions, they’re products I can pronounce and descriptions I can understand. I am a coconut fiend, and am ecstatic to find C2O (coconut chips) and Coco Luxe (organic coconut oil in a tube). I set them aside and continue searching through my new goodies. Hyperbiotics (Pro-15 probiotics), Tranzend Detox Stix, LifeIce (all natural berry bite ice cubes), and Raw Elements (eco formula SPF 30+) make up the remaining components of this little treasure chest. With so many new things to experience, I read all of the information sprinkled on the

notecards to decide where to begin. Following my instincts, and my stomach, I rip open the coconut chips and savor the sweet and salty goodness. Throughout the next couple weeks I incorporate these new luxuries into my everyday life. A morning probiotic here, an evening detox stick there, and coconut oil everywhere. I am only one box in, but I already feel like a part of the “tribe.” Started as a passion project just under a year ago, this well-oiled three-person machine based in Santa Barbara has already grown to an exceptional level. Co-founders Erica Brophy and Taylor Winn have taken wellness and boxed it, filling each monthly box with a holistic experience meant to refresh and revitalize you. With so many holistic products on the market, and so many more coming out each day, they will never run out of health food shelves to raid or #greenbeauty Instagram products to test. Whether it’s a facial scrub, snack, supplement, or lotion, you can be confident that it is nothing but the most organic and natural. And if you weren’t feeling wholesome enough already, Wellness Tribe does its best to partner with companies that also have a charitable mission. While I still take deadly aim for the candy aisle when entering the grocery store, that confidence now carries over to the healthy shelves I used to ignore. I may not be immediately changed into a health nut, but I know that each month brings me closer to living a more “wellthy” life.

NAMASTE IN NATURE With the time change mid-season, we tend to get a bit thrown off. The lack of light after work can leave us feeling unmotivated and unhappy. Instead of finding a fix for lowered spirits with strong spirits, we can combat seasonal mood swings and bring the body back into balance with a few balancing exercises. By taking just 10 minutes during the day to do a few yoga postures and deep breathing, you’ll feel calm, relaxed and rejuvenated. Plus, yoga provides an array of health benefits that improve your daily life. For example: Yoga reduces inflammation and oxidative stress (which helps minimize signs of aging), boosts “feel-good” chemicals in the brain, strengthens immunity, improves posture, combats depression, and increases energy levels.

WARRIOR II This pose increases flexibility in the hips and shoulders, as well as increases strength in the legs, back and ankles. How to do it: Step your left foot to the back of your mat and press down through your feet, bringing your torso up, aligning your shoulders above your hips. From this high lunge, spin your back heel so your foot is planted on the ground, turn your right toes to face your front and your left toes slightly in so your hips and shoulders are facing your torso, right arm in front of you, and left arm behind you, palms down. Look over your front hand. Stay here for 5 long, deep breaths. Repeat on the other side.

WARRIOR III This pose strengthens the hamstrings, calves, glutes, and shoulders, and energizes the body. How to do it: Hug your left shin into your chest, then extend it straight back behind you so it’s parallel to the ground. Flex your left foot and point the toes down. Bring your fingertips to the ground to stabilize yourself. Reach your arms out in front of you so your body is in a straight line from your fingertips all the way down your back and out through your left heel. Keep a slight bend in your standing knee and keep your core and legs engaged the entire time. Stay here for 5 long breaths. Hinge at the hips to come up to standing and switch sides.

MAKING A

DIFFERENCE

Photographed by Shannon Jayne Written by Elena Tico Hair & Makeup by Stephanie Recio with Carlyle Salon & Style Bar

S

tunning mountain views surround Bella & Tate Farms, which centers around an American flag. A shoe rack full of cowboy boots welcomes me outside the door of the beautiful contemporary farmhouse. Tiffany, and her daughters Alyssa and Olivia, warmly introduce themselves as Tiffany offers me ice-cold water with a perfectly sliced orange in a mason jar. Her kitchen is lined with bowls of fresh produce and the table has the most gorgeous colorful roses cut from her garden. Tiffany asks if I prefer inside or outside for the location of our interview. Although it is 90 degrees, we settle on the back porch to fully enjoy the beauty of the property.

90 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

The Antoci family resides in the Santa Ynez Valley. Tiffany was a Hollywood actress, who graduated from UCLA with a degree in Theatre and played a role in Forrest Gump. Vito is a builder, who designed and built Bella & Tate Farms among many other projects. Alyssa (13) is author of The Purple Marble, a motivational speaker and co-founder of the charity Just a Little Cloth. Olivia (10) recently founded the charity Just a Little Sole. Alyssa and Olivia love creating ideas for nonprofits and products to sell; they are exceptionally entrepreneurial and kind. These warm hearted girls encourage each other to be better people and motivate their parents’ involvement in their endeavors.

Tiffany and Vito spent nine years raising their daughters in Newport Beach before looking for a more humble lifestyle to complement their philanthropic personalities. In the Valley, Alyssa and Olivia’s daily lives consist of swimming, writing, riding horses, and playing with their five dogs. Tiffany does not fail to mention the chores she assigns the girls, such as washing the ponies and dogs, retrieving fresh eggs, planting vegetable gardens, doing the dishes after dinner, and cleaning their rooms. What I love about the Antoci family is their inherent

generosity. Tiffany discloses, “I teach my children that it is our blessing to give back to others. I don’t want my girls to have a “big house” attitude or an entitled mentality.” She now focuses on her nonprofit, Strength Behind Stars, a movement to incorporate an anti-bullying program into local schools where peers mentor peers in the program Ambassadors for Kindness. They are planning a benefit concert this year, in honor of a young Paso Robles girl named Hope, who recently took her own life due to bullying. The funds raised will bring top anti-bullying advocates and speakers to schools that are less fortunate.

Their motivation proves anyone has the power to make a difference.

Alyssa co-founded Just a Little Cloth at age 8. She explains, “I wanted to make dresses and donate them to girls who can’t afford them so they can feel like princesses. We started gathering material and stapled it together to make dresses.” They soon realized that donating their own dresses and gathering dress donations from others was more productive, and thus the charity was born. Just a Little Cloth has partnered with various organizations such as the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, the Thomas House, Illumination Foundation, the Santa Ines Mission, and many schools. This year, Just a Little Cloth will be working with People Helping People to collect dresses for the girls in the Santa Barbara Foster Care System. Recently, Olivia started Just A Little Sole to umbrella under Alyssa’s charity. Olivia collected shoes to give to the Santa Ines Mission at Christmastime, and is looking forward to being involved in more philanthropic events with Strength Behind Stars. After chatting with Olivia, we pause our interview as she carries out her favorite local pastries from Mortensen’s Danish Bakery in a beautiful glass cake dome. It is clear that both Alyssa and Olivia inherited the hostess gene, and do not fall short of making their guests feel welcome. I further our discussion to chat with Alyssa about The Purple Marble, which she published at eight

years old. The Purple Marble is a true story about Alyssa’s family member who was bullied for being overweight. Alyssa describes the inspiration behind her book, “Not only was I bullied as most kids are, but when I heard his story it really touched me.” Sheri Fink, an author, visited Alyssa’s school and encouraged Tiffany and Alyssa to publish The Purple Marble. Alyssa now speaks at book fairs, libraries and school events. Her momentum and inspiration continue to grow when students express that her stories made a difference in their lives. When asked what advice she would give to someone who is currently being bullied, Alyssa shares, “Stay strong and stand up for yourself. Find a sentence or word that you can use every time someone is mean to you, and don’t be mean back. Push through and be brave. The person who is bullying is usually hurting inside.” The Purple Marble is currently in 45 schools with the goal to reach every school in America. Alyssa is currently writing two more books, one will be the sequel to The Purple Marble, and the other is a chapter book, which will have about 20 chapters. Before I leave the Antoci home, Tiffany insists I take baked goodies and freshly picked plums with me, her generosity radiating. I drive away inspired to embody the Antoci spirit in my own life. Alyssa and Olivia’s entrepreneurial, brave minds are an important reminder to advocate for the causes you believe in. Their motivation proves anyone has the power to make a difference.

DISH IT UP A simple monthly recipe, to try at home, from our team to you.

Roasted Vegetables & Garlic Ingredients: 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut lengthwise into wedges 2 yams, peeled and cut lengthwise into wedges 5 medium carrots 1 red onion, cut into wedges 2 heads of garlic 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp lemon zest 1 tsp salt 1 tsp fresh cracked pepper 4 thyme sprigs

Directions: Preheat oven to 400ยบF. In a large bowl, combine the sweet potato slices, yam slices, carrots and red onion wedges. In a medium bowl, whisk together the oil, maple syrup, lemon juice, zest, salt and pepper. Reserve three tablespoons of the mixture for the garlic and pour

the rest over the vegetables and mix until they are completely coated. Spread the vegetables out on a large baking sheet in a single layer. Strip off the thyme leaves and sprinkle over vegetables. Pour the remaining liquid in the bowl over the vegetables. Place in the oven and roast for 1 hour. While the vegetables are roasting, peel the outer layers off of the garlic. Cut the tops off to expose the cloves. Place each head of garlic on a piece of aluminum foil with the cloves facing up. Drizzle the remaining three tablespoons of the oil mixture on top of the exposed cloves. Wrap completely with the foil. Place garlic in oven and roast for 30-45 minutes until gloves are golden. Let cool, remove foil and squeeze out the cloves over the vegetables once they are done roasting.

THE LOOK

MAKEUP by Rose To get Nora’s radiant summer glow, I applied a base of gloMinerals Luxe Liquid Foundation in Brulee, and complemented it with gloMinerals Pressed Powder in Honey Medium. I then applied Nars blush in Orgasm over her cheeks to give her a soft flush. To make Nora’s bright eyes pop, I used gloMinerals eye shadow in Twig and applied gloMinerals Lengthening Mascara in Black. To fill in her eyebrows, I used the Anastasia Brow Wiz pencil in Taupe. To complete the look, I coated Nora’s lips with MAC Cremesheen lipstick in Shy Girl for a subtle finish.

HAIR by Ellie To create Nora’s long, flowing beach waves, I used a 1-inch curling wand by Marcel. After loosely curling her hair, I applied Sea Salt Spray by Davines to create natural texture and movement. To add fullness and body, I teased the crown of Nora’s head, giving her waves added volume. To finish and hold the look, I applied Medium Hold Hair Spray by Davines.
