Welcome to the 2016 Polo Season LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
We are looking forward to a very promising year, with six to eight teams anticipated for both the medium and high-goal communities. We had a successful season last year with record attendance and a great customer experience for our playing sponsors, corporate sponsors, and fans. We introduced a new VIP posh polo lounge on the terrace, and it was well received by all. We look forward to expanding our VIP posh polo lounge to the mountain tent during the summer season. You will also see a more robust website and additional engagement over social media to communicate everything happening at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. Melanja Jones has rejoined the club as our full-time, year-round polo manager. We have combined the interscholastic and intercollegiate programs with our Santa Barbara Polo School for beginners. We will have more details in the coming months as we finalize these plans. Melanja, the board, and I aim to make the club more accessible for beginners and early stage players, as these players represent the future of our club. Our full calendar for the 2016 season can be found at sbpolo.com. Come join us this summer for our main matches on Sundays at 3 pm or for more relaxed afternoons on Fridays at 4 pm.

“As you drive up to the Hakans’ house, you feel as if you’ve arrived at a European farmhouse with stunning Old World architecture paired with warm, homey details and mountain views,” says the locally based photographer who shot “Happy Trails” (page 76). “The unique pairing of Oksana’s Siberian heritage and Michael’s East Coast sensibility and polo lifestyle is captivating.”
Dewey Nicks
“One of the great privileges of photographing people is meeting and working with personalities like Nacho Figueras and Delfina Blaquier,” says Montecito-based photographer Dewey Nicks, who shot the cover and “The Ambassador” (page 60). “They were elegant, athletic, and effortless in sharing their joie de vivre throughout the day. I will never forget watching these two through my lens, riding ponies at a full gallop pressed next to each other.”

Tasya van Ree
“During the season in Santa Barbara last year, I was learning how to play polo and around the horses on a daily basis,” says the Hawaiian-born, Los Angeles-based artist/photographer who shares her Equine Intelligence series in “Shape Shifter” (page 68). “Being so close to them, feeling them, watching them…I wanted to capture every moment.”
Monique Rodriguez Lindsay Pogemiller and Alyssa Sutter
“Since we usually spend long hours in photo studios, we loved the chance to style outdoors,” say the duo who dressed Nacho Figueras and his wife, Delfina Blaquier, for “The Ambassador” (page 60). “Watching them with the horses was an amazing experience in itself. Plus, being on the beach—it was a dream shoot!”
“Working at the club is amazing because of all the people I get to spend time with. When the teams and their families come in, I adore playing with their children and watching them grow up,” says Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club event coordinator Monique Rodriguez. “I come from a very athletic family and especially enjoy when we host soccer tournaments and large sporting events. I truly love to be creative and design beautiful areas for our members and guests to appreciate.”

“Enjoying this pristine 87-acre playground never feels like work,” says Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club’s event and sales director Alison Hansen, who penned a number of articles for this issue. ”Every day is different, and who wouldn’t love to spend time with great people, including our members, teams, staff, and guests?”

YEARS
The minimum age that a horse can be ready to play in 16-goal polo. Horses typically start polo training at years of age. It takes several years to train them or to be calm in the chaos of polo, respond to the rider’s commands at high speeds, and develop the muscular strength and stamina to play 16-goal polo. Called the sport of kings, polo is how ancient kings trained their horses to go into battle.

California-born MELANJA JONES has worked in the polo industry for more than 17 years. She started out grooming and training young horses before graduating with honors from Colorado State University. After mentoring with Jimmy Newman at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida, she transitioned to polo management. For many years she was a “polo gypsy,” crisscrossing the country with her horses to work at clubs in Wyoming, Texas, Florida, Maryland, and at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. Now, she is based at the SBPRC as the full-time, year-round polo manager. She is also on the USPA rules committee and Santa Barbara Youth Polo Association board of directors.

Summer SESSIONS In May and June during the spring 12-goal season, the VIP posh polo lounge is located center field on the shaded terrace. Mix and mingle while you meet and take photos with polo players and check in on social media. During the high-goal season in July and August, the terrace is reserved for members and sponsors, and due to the success of the VIP posh polo lounge last year, it’s expanding to the larger tent during the high-goal season this year. In September and October, the 8-goal league provides down-home charm as guests enjoy polo played by local teams.

POLO PEOPLE
Team USPA player JESSE BRAY , now at 5 goals, first arrived at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club to play in the 2012 fall 8-goal with the Dark Horse polo team when he was 19 years old and just 3 goals. Originally from New Zealand, Bray took the risky step of jumping into a professional polo career straight out of high school and now reaps the rewards for his commitment to the sport with national recognition for a successful 2016 winter 20-goal season in Florida, where he was awarded the high goal achievement award. Now he is looking forward to competing under sunny California skies in the upcoming 12 and 16-goal seasons at SBPRC with the Klentner Ranch polo team. Bray got his professional start at the age of 16, playing for Julian Mannix on an 8-goal team that swept all three months of 8-goal tournaments at the Eldorado Polo Club that year. Bray spent several years working his way up through the tournament levels from his start in the Eldorado 8-goal season to success in the 12 and 16-goal leagues at SBPRC tournaments. Then came a run at the Federation of International Polo (FIP) championship with Team USPA that took home team Chile to the brink before falling just short of the title. “Playing for my country and Team USPA in the FIP in Chile was amazing,” says Bray. Bray credits his father—professional polo player and manager Graham Bray—as well as mentor and frequent teammate Santiago Trotz of Pilar, Argentina, as two of his biggest influences. SBPRC has also played an important role in his career. “The great thing about Santa Barbara is that it has all levels of polo, so I was able to work my way up from the 8-goal to the 12-goal to playing in the 16-goal season,” he says. Keep an eye out for Bray as he competes in his kiwi blue helmet in the 12 and 16-goal games with Klentner Ranch—chances are he will be in close proximity to the goal. M E L A N J A J O N E S
Prodigal Patron036
For many years, BEN SOLEIMANI was a mainstay of the Santa Barbara polo season. “The Mayor of Melrose,” as the announcer would call him, typically played in all six months of the Santa Barbara professional season and won many tournaments. A highlight was winning the 2013 America Cup 20-goal, when he earned most valuable player in the America Cup final. Following the 2013 season, Iranian-born Soleimani started spending most of his time pursuing business opportunities abroad. Born into the rug business—he began working at his father’s rug shop when he was 8 years old—he became a partner in the American arm of the family company, Mansour Modern, before partnering with Restoration Hardware. Soleimani was also instrumental in expanding his family’s real estate holdings and vision on enhancing Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. However, it’s not all work and no play. While overseas, Soleimani competed in the British Gold Cup and Queen’s Cup in the United Kingdom as well as two high-goal seasons in Sotogrande, Spain. He also won the Ellerstina Gold Cup in Argentina two years in a row, his team being the only team in the history of that tournament to do so. His Restoration Hardware polo team won in 2014 with a roster of Soleimani, Santiago Von Wernich, Magoo Laprida, and Hilario Ulloa and repeated the victory in 2015 with a lineup of Soleimani, Facundo Llorente, Magoo Laprida, and Hilario Ulloa. Now, Soleimani is back in Santa Barbara with his RH team, competing in this year’s 16-goal season for the Pacific Coast
Open. “I love Santa Barbara,” he says. “The fields and the weather are the best.” Indeed, he is all about pursuing the things he loves—polo and work. “My life right now is completing a 25-year-long vision of turning Melrose Avenue into L.A.’s most popular street for high-end retail,” he says. “I’m playing polo and doing what I love in business. I do not work just to work, I pursue opportunities in business that I am passionate about.” M . J .

Youth Polo
The 2016 MIGUEL TORRES/WORLD GYM
For two Saturdays each summer, the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club is given over to the youth of polo for the MIGUEL TORRES/WORLD GYM YOUTH TOURNAMENT and the LINFOOT MEMORIAL tournaments. On these days, the club donates the fields and logistical support to the Uretz and Linfoot families to provide a chance for youth players in California to experience polo with their peers on the fields where the legends play. In these tournaments, the kids of high-goal professionals from Argentina and Chile play on the same teams as the children of the grooms who so carefully watch over the high-goal horses. Corky and Kathy Linfoot started the Linfoot Memorial in 1988 to honor Corky’s father, Dr. Billy Linfoot, a 9-goal player in his prime, who was president of the club in the 1960s. The tournament started with just a few kids and now draws more than 40. “We are so appreciative of the club supporting the tournament and youth polo,” says Kathy. Claudia and Mike Uretz are players and parents of four polo-playing boys. In 2000, they were playing polo with Miguel and Kelly Torres and Alfonso Giannico at what was then called Meeker’s Field when the idea for a youth tournament was born. The tournament continued at Meeker’s until Miguel Torres’s passing in 2007, when they were invited to bring it to the SBPRC and the name was modified to Miguel Torres/World Gym Youth Tournament. “We wanted the kids to have an opportunity to play against their peers,” says Claudia. Many of the players who started in these tournaments have gone on to compete in higher-goal polo. The success of the youth tournaments inspired the club to start full-time programs such as the coaching league to help all beginning players young in age and young at heart grow as polo players. M . old, but he has been playing at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club for many years. He played in the coaching league to start and then progressed to the pro pool tournaments; this spring season, he’s competing in the pro pool, and will play the same pro this winter at Eldorado Polo Club. Grant’s father, Geoff Palmer, has enjoyed a very successful career in polo over the years and is noted for his sportsmanship and love of the game. Grant shows every sign of following in his father’s footsteps. M . J .

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED TO PLAY POLO? I started playing polo when I was 3
but didn’t really get into it until I was 7.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THE SPORT?
What I love most about polo is the thrill and adrenaline you get from running up and down the field on a horse, breakaways, and scoring goals. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT SBPRC? That it has perfect polo weather—not too hot, not too cold. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE HORSES AND CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT THEM? My favorite
horse’s name is Delfina. She can get me in and out of plays easily and does everything you want her to do. I recently got another horse, Cherokee, from my dad—an “old campaigner” as he likes to call her. My dad played her in the 12-goal for years and I’m having a lot of fun with her as well. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS YOU PROGRESS?
I just want to become the best that I possibly can.

However, despite garnering fame abroad, Chocolate was born (in June 2003) and bred in the Santa Ynez Valley. Coming from a long lineage of polo-playing horses, Chocolate’s parents—his sire Morningstar and dam Empress—were both thoroughbreds; Empress’s owner, Ken Berry, was also Chocolate’s first owner with Honario Ramirez as his trainer. “Some years ago, I was watching Ken playing a practice game in Santa Barbara, and the incredible movements of this horse called my attention,” says Argentine player Santiago Trotz. “I asked Ken if I could ride him and I played him in a practice game some days after. I couldn’t believe the ability he had for the game.” Aside from the prestigious 2013 award, Chocolate was also named the best polo pony in the finals of the Palermo Argentine Open in 2013 and best playing pony in the finals of the 2015 Tortugas Argentine Open, all which gave this American horse worldwide recognition. Trotz says Chocolate, who’s returned to the states with owner Bob Jornayvaz to reside in Florida, has all the qualities a horse needs: “temperament, agility, fastness, mouth, and heart.” J E N N I F E R B L A I S E K R A M E R

Intercollegiate & Interscholastic Polo 038 Interscholastic girl’s teammates Cory Williams, Megan Varchetto, Charlize Bisogni, and Mia Sweeney with Westmont’s men’s team of Mike Esparza, Tony Uretz, and Hank Uretz.
Three enthusiastic teams of young players compete in the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club’s INTERCOLLEGIATE/INTERSCHOLASTIC PROGRAM : Westmont College’s men’s team, Santa Barbara interscholastic’s girl’s team, and the Santa Barbara/Central Coast interscholastic boys. Some of the players have previous polo experience whereas others have never ridden before, but they all learn about competition and sportsmanship. Coached by Megan Judge of Central Coast Polo, the Santa Barbara/Central Coast players are Charlie Walker, brothers Luke and Jake Klentner, and Luke O’Leary. The SB/CC team defeated a disciplined Poway polo team at the Western Regionals to advance to the national championship
in Houston, Texas—a feat in their first year of I/I competition. They won their first game at nationals against Country Farms polo team 11-8 before falling to Prestonwood. The Santa Barbara Interscholastic girl’s team of Cory Williams, Megan Varchetto, Mia Sweeney, and Charlize Bisogni competed together for the first time this year. The girls gained a wealth of experience and friendship during their journey. Westmont’s men’s interscholastic team has played at SBPRC for many years and won two national championships. Tony Uretz, Hank Uretz, and Mike Esparza are training to challenge for a third title. At press time, they were preparing for the Western Regional competition. John Westley coaches the Santa Barbara interscholastic girl’s and Westmont men’s teams. During the last 15 years at SBPRC, Westley has taken 36 qualifying teams to the USPA’s Regional Intercollegiate/Interscholastic polo tournaments and 13 qualifying college teams (UC Santa Barbara, Westmont, and Santa Barbara City College) to the United States Polo Association’s National Intercollegiate Championships, bringing home the title twice. In 2015, he was also chosen to coach the USA intercollegiate team against Britain, and recently received the Clint Nangle Equine Welfare Award from Pacific Coast Circuit governor Patrick Nesbitt. John and his wife, Wendy Westley, teach lessons for all ages at the Santa Barbara Polo School, sbpoloschool.com, shepherding new players into the world of polo. M . J .

There is no denying the Latin dynasty of polo players and their famously beautiful wives. When it’s game on, Argentina’s first lady Juliana Awada, 10-goaler Adolfito Cambiaso’s wife, María Vázquez, artist Lolo Tanoira (wife of 9-goal player Santiago Chavanne), and Meghan Gracida (wife of the legendary Memo), and many more turn to designer ROCIO GONZALEZ ’s bohemian, handcrafted bolsas for their tailgating style. Gonzalez—herself part of an iconic polo family and married to player Paco de Narvaez—brings her new collection to Santa Barbara this summer for a special trunk show on July 16 with Malia Mills, 805-845-2137, maliamills.com, at the Montecito Country Mart. “Having been raised on the Central Coast of California, the effortlessly chic fashion sense common in the Golden State is ingrained in me,” says MEGHAN GRACIDA , who embraces her roots through her style as she travels the world with her husband, Memo, following his professional polo career. “To put it simply, I'm a little boho with the elegance of old Hollywood glamour, wrapped together with a hint of rock-and-roll to keep things interesting.” Although Meghan acquires special pieces to add to her closet during her travels, her top two spots are Ladybug Boutique, 805-693-8998, ladybugboutique. com, in Santa Ynez and DIANI Boutique, 805-966-7177, dianiboutique.com, in Santa Barbara. Interior designer BIRGIT KLEIN .
Meet BIRGIT KLEIN , who is bringing her European design sensibilities into our neck of the woods. Originally from Germany, “Bee” lived in London, New York, and Los Angeles until she realized this was home for her. “I fell in love with Santa Barbara when we visited to watch the Pacific Coast Open,” she says. “I remember it so clearly, as I was newly pregnant, and I just knew that this is where I want to raise my family.” While she’s working on creating a local studio and storefront full of European home furnishings and accents, she’s still bouncing from project to project all over the globe and likes to take a breather at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. “The kids love coming to watch their daddy [Andrew Broeren] play and feed the horses carrots after the game.” Her interior style—which she calls “luxurious and timeless yet comfortable and relaxed” and includes signature components such as sculptural pieces, lots of texture, and muted tones— is often echoed in her wardrobe. At the club, you’ll likely see her in a summer dress, sunglasses, and a geometric Pucci scarf. “I often wear long and floaty dresses layered with a great little jacket or knit in case clouds roll in,” she says. “If I wear a hat, I usually wear a Panama hat or something unstructured and flexible. And, as I will inevitably walk on grass, I usually wear a fantastic wedge heel or elegant and embellished flat sandal—also good if you want to participate in the divot stomping on the field.” J E N N I F E R B L A I S E K R A M E R

Summerland Winery is a boutique winery dedicated to the production of fine wines from the Central Coast of California. Founded in 2002 by Nebil “Bilo Zarif, the wines we create are precipitously focussed on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals. We are especially proud of our estate vineyard, Theresa-Noelle, in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, which is a 100% Pinot Noir vineyard. Beyond the vineyards, Summerland Winery offers an inviting, relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy our wines in our tasting room located in the seaside village of Summerland, California.

GRASSINI FAMILY VINEYARDS ’

The Grassinis’ property in Santa Ynez.
A Perfect PAIRING When it comes to polo and the GRASSINI FAMILY VINEYARDS , the connection is
personal. “I grew up riding,” says CEO Katie Grassini, “and I got my first horse at the age of 8.” As a girl, she competed on hunter-jumpers, and when her family spent summers in Carpinteria, they came to the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club to watch the competitions. “I remember the beautiful horses,” she says, “and how big the guys on them were. They were riding around like cowboys!” Her affection for the sport was rekindled as an adult when she attended the benefit at the polo club that welcomed Britain’s Prince
William and his wife, Kate, in 2011. “I was amazed at the game’s speed and intensity, and I realized then that Grassini Family Vineyards could get involved.” May 22 marks the company’s third annual event, when Grassini hosts a tent at the polo club and provides shuttle service between the club and their downtown Santa Barbara tasting room (Grassini wine club members’ general admission fees to the polo club are also waived for the day). “It’s been a real partnership,” she says. The occasion is a wonderful way to taste Grassini’s new releases, enjoy delicious food, and watch the fast-moving sport just steps away. “I love that you’re right there next to the horses. You can have a glass of wine…and there’s this amazing battle on the field.” The grapes for Grassini’s acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petit Verdot all come from Happy Canyon, at the warmer east end of the Santa Ynez Valley, on property the family has owned since the 1980s. Around 2000, “Dad saw people putting in vineyards and thought the land was right for Bordeaux varietals,” Katie says. “This year, we’ll also do a stand-alone Merlot—it’s a beautiful grape and wine.” The Grassinis also pride themselves on sustainability: “We’re 100 percent solar powered,” and all the water used for the winery—“and it’s a lot!”—is recaptured, cleaned, and used for irrigation. The sustainability program includes the Equipo label, whose profits, in part, go to an emergency fund for the vineyard crew. That impetus to share extends to the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. “Our event gives us the opportunity to reach more people and expose them to polo,” says Katie. “It’s such a great sport!” 813 Anacapa St., Ste. 6, Santa Barbara, 805-897-

THE AMBASSADOR
“When you see the horses race down the field, it is very emotional” says Delfina. “You know the grandmother and the aunts of those ponies.
It’s even more special to watch our own horse,
because it’s like having your own child.”
062
“A mission in my life is to bring polo to the world a little more,” says Nacho Figueras, who has saddled up with both Prince William and Prince Harry and cohosts the annual bicoastal Veuve Clicquot Polo Classics on Manhattan’s Governors Island and at Pacific Palisades’s Will Rogers State Park. The 39-year-old is as comfortable straddling a horse and hitting the game-winning goal as he is in front of the camera modeling for major designers, most notably with Ralph Lauren for the past 10 years. Nacho Figueras is polo’s David Beckham. Married to his teenage sweetheart, photographer and model Delfina Blaquier, the jet-setting father of four travels the globe with his picture-perfect brood in tow. The handsome Argentine rose to fame playing on the fields of the Hamptons, where he just so happened to be discovered by fashion photographer Bruce Weber at a dinner party. He’s that enviable trifecta— with the look, the family, and the accent to boot. And now they’ve set their sights on the sunny sands of California as a new seasonal hub. He couldn’t have a better teammate than Delfina. They are the real deal, a modern fairytale in the making. From love at first sight in their native Buenos Aires to a wedding on the family’s estancia in 2004 and whirlwind trots around the world, the charming couple even starred together in Ralph Lauren’s 2011 Romance campaign, aptly titled “A Love Story.” No one knows the glamorous polo world like “Delfi” (as Nacho calls her), who’s watched four generations of players—her grandfather, father, husband, and son—play in countless matches. The striking mother of Hilario, 16, Aurora, 11, Artemio, 6, and Alba, 3, is a force to be reckoned with on a horse as well. A fluid and fearless rider (yes, she commands the reins bareback and barefoot in beaded gowns and swimsuits in these pages), the 5’11” stunner is just as passionate about the game and the life they have created in Argentina and abroad.

The couple is currently building a modernist manse outside of Buenos Aires that contains an art studio for Nacho to paint his colorful abstract canvases and to house Delfina’s oversized blackand-white photographs. The barns host more than 500 horses with an adjacent breeding facility that turns out prize-winning ponies at world-class prices. “Horses are a very important part of the game. Without good horses, you can’t win. It’s like race-car driving. You could be the best driver in the world, but if I give you a 1964 Oldsmobile and I drive a Ferrari, you can never beat me,” remarks Nacho. “With polo, it’s more or less the same. If you have great horses and are playing someone who is as good as you but doesn’t have good horses, 99 percent of the time, you will win.” It’s no surprise that they’re eyeing the ball rolling toward the West Coast—fashion, art, entertainment, music, food, film, and even the luxe biz of polo—layering into the cultural zeitgeist of the new California. New Yorkers are moving to the City of Angels in droves, and our American Riviera is seducing Hamptonites. We also happen to have one of the finest polo clubs in the world. John Muse, president of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, adds: “Nacho is a brand of his own in fashion and the equestrian lifestyle. He is one of the most effective promoters of the sport of polo.” “Santa Barbara has a very special vibe,” says Delfina. “I could make it my home very fast.” The Figueras tribe loves to road-trip up the 101, take trail rides in the Santa Ynez Valley, and watch sunsets at Butterfly. “We love it as a family here,” says Nacho. “The beach, the horses, the people, and of course, the polo club.” ●

Polo patron Michael Hakan finds his postcareer
paradise in an Old World farmhouse

The LIVING ROOM is full of old furniture layered with luxurious furs and South American blankets. French doors and LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS from the Oak Group invite the outdoors in.

After a 20-year high-goal career, Michael Hakan calls himself a “happy graduate” of polo. “I have no plans to return to the saddle,” he says, “but am happy to have made a safe landing.” That he did, settling safe and sound into a 12-acre estate in Carpinteria’s Rincon Hill neighborhood. An investment manager by day, Hakan’s real passion is farming, and here he tends to more than six acres of avocado orchards and a plethora of native fruit trees, including sapote. Between planting and harvesting, Hakan loves kicking back and taking in the views from his European-style hillside farmhouse. He and his wife, Oksana, met in France and were happy to find a home that reminded them much of Provence. “It looks like a Mediterranean bastide like you’d see in the south of France, Spain, or Italy,” he says. “I love the style, the stone, the tiled roofs, and the views.” With a long gravel drive and espaliered plants climbing up the stone and stucco walls, the farmhouse transports you to another place. Sundrenched patios filled with terra-cotta planters stretch out over sweeping views of trees, mountains, and the ocean, while chickens and geckos run with the family dog and cat around the grounds. Inside, the home has more of that nostalgic charm despite the fact that it was actually built in the early 1990s. The interiors boast textured walls, wood beams, iron chandeliers, and rustic wood

out and purchasing a bunch of new stuff. “There’s no giant rush to make it perfect tomorrow…there is no finish, it’s an ongoing project.” While the couple thinks they’ll consider using a designer down the road, for now, they’ve put their pennies toward farmhouse basics: irrigation, wells, and roofing. The Hakans have another farm in the Coachella area, where they grow organic Medjool dates and keep a few horses. Though Michael no longer competes, Paulina has begun to ride and plays Pee-Wee Polo on Saturdays. On weekends, they also go to polo matches together—with Michael enjoying life as a spectator and watching the next generation of players. Hints of polo are found throughout the home, from boots in the hall to awards in the office to Argentinean blankets hung on hooks, making it clear that the game is never too far from his mind. “I am so happy to have been part of that wonderful world of polo,” he says. “I still treasure it.” ●
furnishings. Light bounces down hallways from the country kitchen with colorful tiles and painted green cupboards to the lofty beamed living room lined with French doors, inviting the scenery in. Romantic details are everywhere—from candelabras to vintage mirrors to four-poster beds. But the most magical might be the stone and iron spiral staircase winding up to a fairy tale-like tower where their 7-year-old daughter, Paulina, has a playroom with a view—every little princess’s dream come true. Having traveled extensively through Turkey, Russia, Europe, and Argentina, the Hakans picked up quite a few antiques over the last several years. They’ve also collected paintings—mostly landscapes from the local Oak Group—as well as polo-inspired pieces. All this gives the home a lived-in, collected, “mix-and-match” aesthetic, says Michael. “We were inspired by what we had,” he laughs, adding they made do with existing furniture instead of running

To All Gehache Polo Wives’ in the World
The Polo Wife’s Oath
I promise to attend every game in which my husband is playing. w I will have his whites spotless on game day. w My first priority will be Polo. w The care of polo ponies must come before the needs of my family. w I will be ready to drive a horse-filled trailer home if my husband is too tired or indisposed after celebrating his victory. w I will always state that I was watching the game every minute, and that each and every shot made by my husband was amazing. w I will act thrilled to attend the same event at the same place with the same people every Sunday afternoon, for the entire season, regardless of how I really feel. w I will attend the Polo Ball with the same people that I see every Saturday and Sunday at the same place all season long. w Although polo players enjoy riding their horses hard and putting them away wet, DO NOT, I repeat, allow this same tawdry behavior to happen to you. w Finally, and most importantly, I will never wear trousers whiter than my husband’s polo whites.
