When school is out, we often feel the call to “get out of town” and escape our everyday lives. Journeys beckon. While I love a trip to Europe’s finest spots as much as the next person, be prepared for long lines at museums, heat waves with limited air conditioning, and tourist trap trattorias that can take some of the fun out of the whole experience. Throw in the outrageous fees for airline travel and hotel stays, before you even start shopping for souvenirs you might need to consider taking out a second mortgage to pay for your escape. My advice? Take an amazing vacation…in your own backyard. Santa Barbara and its environs rival what Europe has to offer except without air transport and all the fuss that comes with it. This issue of Santa Barbara Magazine highlights some of the best our city has to offer during this season. Think of it as your summertime cheat sheet. For example, hop on a boat and explore our city by water. With the breathtaking vistas, a sail around the channel is the perfect way to start your staycation. Our feature on Santa Barbara’s sailing races (“Catch the Wind,” page 146) will get your sea legs strong. If you are water weary, even just a trip to the harbor for a cup of clam chowder at Brophy Bros. or a lobster lunch on Stearns Wharf can put you in a summer state of mind. But what to wear while whiling away the lazy days, you ask? Why not throw on an easy breezy dress from DOEN, the new chic and affordable label started by Santa Barbara-born sisters Margaret and Katherine Kleveland. We visit them (“Creative Consciousness,” page 154) at their Sand Point family home full of kids, bikes, and nature that all combine perfectly to embody the lifestyle of our paradise. Or if you want to go more boho, a style as closely related to Santa Barbara as black is to New York, just look to our fashion portfolio (“Franklin Canyon,” page 136) shot in Carpinteria’s foothills by neighbor and famed photographer/director Dewey Nicks. And if you want to get your beach on, I can’t think of a more perfect perch than photographer Michael Haber’s seaside abode (“Rincon Classic,” page 122). Nestled in the iconic surf community, his home embodies the Endless Summer aesthetic. With kids piling in and out of vintage Ford Broncos, surfboards strewn everywhere, and the cedar hot tub at the ready, what's more summer than that? Of course, a staycation here should also include the tried-and-true: Summer Solstice parades, fireworks on the Fourth of July, cocktails overlooking the city at the El Encanto, concerts under the stars at the Santa Barbara Bowl, the overflowing brunch at the Four Seasons Biltmore, outdoor arias at the Music Academy of the West, farmers market excursions, a spa experience at the Bacara, a swim and lunch at the Coral Casino, a walk along Hendry’s Beach and breakfast at the Boathouse, Fiesta fun, a hike up your favorite canyon with a smoothie from Alchemy Wellness Spa cafe après, and dinner at the San Ysidro Ranch on the garden terrace surrounded by the most amazing smell of night-blooming jasmine. These are just a few of my favorite things to do here…I am sure everyone you ask has a hundred more things to add to that list. Point being: There’s no need to escape. We are already amid the best this world has to offer. Happy summering!

The Summer SOUNDS of Music Chamber music, orchestral works, opera—the riches of the MUSIC ACADEMY OF THE WEST ’s 69th annual summer festival span the genres of classical music and last for eight glorious weeks. From June 13 through August 6, the 140 full-scholarship fellows—from 24 states and 11 countries—are joining with world-class faculty and visiting artists in an intensive program of musical study combined with hundreds of concerts, recitals, master classes, and other events in Montecito and Santa Barbara. The community engagement makes the Music Academy unique, notes Patrick Posey, vice president of artistic planning and educational programs. “It's the only institution of its kind involving the audience as part of the education program.” The community access concerts on July 2 and 3 featuring the academy orchestra and pianist JeanYves Thibaudet at the Granada Theatre are just one example. “It’s a grade-A program, very American,” says Posey. “Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony, and a piece by John Adams that shows our commitment to the music of today.” In another nod to contemporary music and the future, 25-year-old wunderkind Matthew Aucoin is in residence for seven weeks. The young composer and pianist is conducting Smetana’s opera The Bartered Bride with the academy orchestra and voice program fellows, while the Tuesday night chamber series includes Aucoin’s own opera, Second Nature, for three instrumentalists and six singers.

Inducted into the National Hockey League’s Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988, the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011, Snider impacted the sport with a lifetime of hard work and love. Snider, a recognized philanthropist, has always shared generosity with the communities in which he lived. In fact, he helped start the Ayn Rand Institute in Irvine, California, a research center at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in honor of his father, an enterprise center at the University of Maryland (his alma mater), and supported

the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. However, he is most recognized for his founding of the Youth Hockey Foundation in 2005, which built practice rinks around Philadelphia, offering as many as 3,000 kids free hockey lessons along with homework help and social and academic support. Here in Santa Barbara, Snider continued to give to the local community—he was a donor to the Santa Barbara’s Cottage Hospital Foundation as well as the Granada Theatre. Most recently, he eagerly helped bring to life Goleta’s Ice in Paradise skating rink by donating more than $1 million toward the effort. “Ed’s philanthropy is welldocumented, but more significant was his backing of the Ice in Paradise rink,” shares longtime friend Alan Thicke, honorary chair of Ice in Paradise. “If there’s a Santa Barbara Hall of Fame, he gets his own wing.” C O U R T N E Y J O N E S

CO ’s Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern’s creative partnership spans both the worlds of fashion and film. Stephanie, a Marrakech-born, Montreal-bred film producer whose family has been in the fashion business, and Justin, an Oklahoma lad turned Duke grad and film writer, combined their passions and designed a clothing line of luxury essentials for the grown-up sophisticate. “We wanted to dress the kind of woman that I was as a producer,” says Danan. “Someone who has to go from work to evening drinks or a film premiere and not have time to change or think about it.” Now, with several collections behind them, the chic, minimal Co is receiving raves on the racks of Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and a recent pop-up at the Montecito Country Mart. The couple, who spends summer weekends here with Kern’s family, recently shot their Pre-Fall 2016 campaign at Ganna Walska’s Lotusland. “It made sense to photograph there because we had chosen fabrications with a very naturalistic element—sand and sky tones, shaved shearling, pebble patterned fil coupe, and wave-pleated silk,” says Justin. “It was a bit of a love letter to our local ecology and landscape, and there’s no place better to capture that than Lotusland.” G I N A T O L L E S O N

Taste Combine the creative minds of party planner Stephanie Sanders and partner in crime Monica Epstein and you never know what you’ll get. To celebrate Old Spanish Days Fiesta, rather than going with the typical sarape and sombrero-studded soiree, the amigas went with a Mexican street theme centered around the iconic bingo card game Lotería to “keep the vibe fun and fresh,” says Sanders, who produces private events. At this potluck-style dinner at Epstein’s Miramar Beach home, 40 guests convened over an array of casual food such as Tajínspiced jicama and mango served in bags, elotes (Mexican street corn), vegetarian tamales from Rosales Mexican Restaurant, chips and guac with a salsa bar, and mini churros. The duo took the serve-yourself feast to the next level with the margarita salt bar. “We kept the margaritas authentic and ‘clean/healthy’ by mixing fresh lime juice and either Sauza or Hornitos tequila,” says Sanders. But giving it a new twist, they offered assorted salts— kosher salt, lime salt, Tajín, ghost chili pepper salt—as well as chili pepper sugar to suit the guests’ sweet or savory cravings. Keeping up with the spirit of the occasion, Epstein's 12-yearold son—dressed in an authentic velvet sombrero, guayabera shirt, and with a hand-painted mustache—became the Lotería caller, entertaining guests all evening long while keeping the game going and handing out prizes adorned with a handmade tissuepaper flower and tissue-and-leather tassels. Dinner with a VIEW Having recently undergone a two-year, $3.5 million renovation, the Bacara Resort & Spa’s signature restaurant, ANGEL OAK , is set to open this summer. Perched on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific, chef Vincent Lesage’s contemporary steak and seafood restaurant is featuring American classics with a Santa Barbara farmers market bent. “The inspiration behind the menu was to reimagine what you classically see in a steak house but with a twist. Fresh Face Portrait paintings by BARET BOISSON possess the whimsical style of American folk art while managing to capture each subject’s true essence. Entirely self-taught, Boisson—who splits her time between Southampton, Santa Barbara, and Paris—only began painting at age 30, but her natural talent was evident from the start. She’s received commissions from notable collectors including Kathy Ireland, Jimmy Fallon, the late Elizabeth Taylor, and Lynda Weinman. Her love of history—Boisson majored in political science at Barnard College—is reflected in her impressive solo exhibition at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, entitled “Inspiring Greatness through Words and Deeds: The Art of Baret Boisson” from June 11 through September 6. The show features the artist’s depictions of civil rights activists (Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks), politicians (Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama), sports figures (Jackie Robinson, Billie Jean King) and entertainers (Ella Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Taylor). When the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced its 2016 Fellows—175 awardees were culled from nearly 3,000 applications—Hungarian-born interactive media artist GEORGE LEGRADY was on the list. Renowned worldwide for his visually arresting artworks conjoining advanced data processing and cultural content, Legrady is a professor of Interactive Media at UC Santa Barbara, chairs the Media Arts & Technology program, and also heads the university’s Experimental Visualization Lab. Legrady’s notable public projects include Making Visible the Invisible at the Seattle Central Library, where hourly updates of books being checked out were projected on large screens behind the information desk, enabling library patrons to visualize the reading community’s “personality” based on the types of books in circulation. The colorful abstract Kinetic Flow installation at the Vermont/Santa Monica MetroRail Station graphically compares the downward movement of commuters taking the escalator versus the staircase. Perfectly Illogical Bulgarian-born STEFAN DOBRIANOV says he was “going in a circle—a bad one,” and decided the best way to break it was to do something illogical. He never planned to leave his homeland or sell his house to rent in Santa Barbara, but after a windsurfer versus surfer collision at Rincon Point on January 1, 2012, his decision was complete. During his teenage years, Dobrianov drew fonts, posters, and furniture then later brought his ideas to life with the furniture design/manufacturing company he eventually sold. However, he has no formal art training. “Everything is easy, but it takes time,” he says. “Sometimes the hardest part is to start.” What came of his fateful day at Rincon is now a series of distressed and embellished leather surfboard sculptures (from $9,600)—balancing juxtaposed details of masculine/feminine, natural/ man-made, perfect/imperfect—that currently resides downtown at the Jade Now Gallery, 805-845-4558. STEPHEN HARBY ’s passion for architecture has

taken him all over the world, and he has the pictures to prove it. But unlike most digitalage travelers, Harby journeys with pen, paper, and brushes; and his vacation images are often framed by collectors for wall hanging. A Yale-trained architect and fellow of the prestigious American Academy in Rome, Harby has, for the past decade, directed the Yale School of Architecture’s summer program in Rome, where budding architects get the benefit of Harby’s prodigious knowledge of architectural history along with his impressive sketching and watercolor abilities. Harby also shares his expertise leading small

architecture-focused tours; a recent trip covered the culture-rich island of Sicily, where classical temples, open-air theaters, and mosaic-adorned villas are plentiful. (Armchair travelers can get a taste of the journey by viewing Harby’s exquisite watercolors of the island’s historic sites.) As a part-time Santa Barbara resident, Harby has trained his brush on our town’s architectural wonders: the courthouse, the Old Mission Santa Barbara, Val Verde, and Casa del Herrero. His work has been exhibited at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. superb collections, incredible community outreach, roster of notable past exhibitions, and vision for the future. When the museum opened its doors on June 5, 1941, the opening exhibition of more than 140 significant works— “Painting Today and Yesterday in the United States”—signaled the high ambitions of the fledgling institution and drew more than 50,000 visitors in its first six months. Today, there are 28,000 pieces in the permanent collection, its educational programs reach 25,000 students, and more than 100,000 visitors enter its doors each year. The anniversary festivities kicked off in mid-May, and the current “Puja and Piety” exhibition of South Asian art (on view until August 28), is one way of acknowledging the museum’s superb holdings in that area—just one of several notable departments. A glittery gala and auction is taking place on September 18 to honor founding benefactors, draw attention to the museum’s masterpieces, and raise funds to support programming. Meanwhile, thanks to a $50 million campaign, the SBMA of the future is taking shape with transformative renovations designed to add 25 percent more space. When photographer and ocean-lover Michael Haber had the chance to create a nautical-inspired family home on Rincon Point, he dove in headfirst. Having dreamt for years of a light, airy, midcentury beach home where his three sandy-footed surfer kids could run wild, this 1965 original post and beam fit the mold. Since it needed a ton of TLC, he turned to his lifelong partner and coparent, Eileen Cavanaugh of CH Design, to help upgrade the home and give it heart. “We went for the Streamline Moderne look,” says Eileen. “And with the help of the talented Mark Shields from Design Arc, we took that seed and carried it up to this century.” The team was able to make the house much more contemporary without it turning too cold or sterile. The goal was a light, open concept without compartmentalizing every room; by popping in skylights and knocking down interior walls, they made it happen. Thousands of pounds of new 25-foot-long support beams were added in the attic to simply get rid of numerous posts and dividing walls cluttering the first floor. This gave them a clean slate, which eased the interior flow for an active family who loves to entertain. “Beach houses should be indestructible. Kids and animals track in sand, tar, and wet bathing suits,” says Eileen. “I love when a home feels like it’s lived in and not too precious. It should reflect the souls of its inhabitants.” While bringing the home into the Art Moderne realm, Michael also wanted to give it a nautical spin and make people feel like they were standing on a boat. To emphasize this, he used fabricated polished stainless steal stanchions with teak rails inside and

out. “My heart lies deep with the ocean and sailing the seas!” he says, adding that a few round windows lend peekaboo water views and a nautical look that comes off authentic and not contrived since they were placed strategically and used sparingly. The kitchen—which Michael calls “the helm of the ship”—became much larger, gaining a five-byten-foot marble island. White walls throughout give a clean backdrop to colorful surfboards, guitars, Art Deco furniture, and Michael’s collection of original photographs from his “heroes” such as Henri CartierBresson and Herb Ritts. Most surfaces are simple and low maintenance—from the graphic Moroccan encaustic cement tiles in the bathroom to the wide plank oak floors that were bleached to a beachy white. “My children are avid surfers with a propensity to have their bodies wet and their toes sandy on a regular basis,” Michael adds. “Here, you can be barefoot with sandy feet or play a role of Mad Men and have a martini soirée.” Atop the house, he built a third-story tower, where tons of light, ocean views, and salt air abound with two decks on either side for taking in the sunset from the couch and teak side chairs. During construction, a dumb waiter was integrated to send cocktails up to the tower for happy hour. In the backyard, 25 bamboo trees were planted along with two 25-foot-tall queen palms. For nighttime lighting, Michael strung Edison bulbs throughout the yard and put in low-profile lounge furniture and an iconic round Gordon & Grant cedar hot tub, which he says is usually full of exhausted surfers. Whether kicking back outside or watching the waves from the deck, this streamlined surf shack is everything the family wanted it to be. Adds Michael: “The house feels like my dream ship permanently moored on land with ocean views throughout.” ●

Wet Wednesdays are booming up and down the West Coast, and nowhere more so than in the Santa Barbara Channel Feature


It should come as no surprise that Santa Barbara, city of superlatives, takes the fullest possible advantage of daylight saving time. When that extra hour of sunlight kicks in every year in March, our waterfront comes alive. At the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, daylight saving means it’s time for Wet Wednesdays, a popular event that routinely involves more than 60 vessels and hundreds of sailors. From mid-March until the beginning of November, SBYC members, their families, and friends gather on Wednesday afternoons to prep their boats, gauge the wind and tide, check the course, and make it across the line as close as they can to the sound of the starter’s air horn signal. Affectionately dubbed “beer can races” by yachting insiders, weeknight races like Wet Wednesdays are booming all up and down the West Coast, and nowhere more so than in Santa Barbara, where the mix of serious racing and casual socializing brings out the fun in a sport that can otherwise be forbiddingly competitive. The unique venue—provided courtesy of the yacht club’s observation deck and the nearby Channel Islands—renders this picturesque setting ideal for spectators. At most yacht clubs, you have to go out on the water to really see the action; here it’s as easy as climbing a flight of stairs. Spectators are so close that the race committee—ordinarily holding down one end of the starting line in a launch—can run the entire event from the second-floor deck. For race director Brad Schaupeter, who is also the head coach of the UC Santa Barbara sailing team, Wet Wednesdays are a test of concentration and focus as he stands on the second floor of the yacht club building with a pair of binoculars and a laptop, calling out the names and times of the finishers to a waiting team of club members who assist him by writing down the order and blowing the horn to signal to the boats that they have crossed the finish line. “Razzle Dazzle, Shantih, Grappa,” Schaupeter calls out, “Arrivederci, Free Enterprise.” These are the fanciful names given to the latest in high-performance racing yachts by their equally high-performing owners. For example, when he’s not at the Neal Feay factory creating one-of-a-kind anodized aluminum projects for clients such as Louis Vuitton, Alex Rasmussen can be found on the water, skippering Free Enterprise, his 35-foot J/105. Radio host Dr. Laura Schlesinger is a regular at Wet Wednesdays, where she races Warrior in the club handicap division. The big news of the summer is that the Santa Barbara Yacht Club was serving as headquarters for a new event, California Offshore Race Week, which took place from May 27 through June 4. The first leg took sailors from San Francisco Bay to Monterey, and the second from Monterey to Santa Barbara. When the offshore racers dropped anchor in Santa Barbara Harbor, they were invited to participate in Wet Wednesday, thus setting up the beer can race to end all beer

can races. After that, it was on to San Diego, where the weeklong series finished. When it comes to offshore racing, one yacht stands out from the rest of the Santa Barbara fleet— that’s Taxi Dancer, the bright yellow, 68-foot custom “sled” owned and raced by Tom Parker, Jim Yabsley, and Dick Compton. Always a threat to win Southern California’s top ocean contests, Taxi Dancer placed third in the Maxi division of this season’s Newport to Ensenada race that took place on April 25. Yabsley grew up sailing in the Santa Barbara Harbor, and he’s proud of the all-volunteer crew that keeps Taxi Dancer competitive against the hired guns who man archrival Roy Disney’s maxi-yacht Pyewacket. Defining the Santa Barbara style of community sailing against Disney’s more commercial approach, Yabsley says, “The day I start having to pay people to sail is the day I stop racing.” Of course there’s more to sailing than just going fast. At Skip Abed’s Santa Barbara Sailing Center, you can charter everything from stand-up paddleboards and kayaks to ocean-worthy cruisers with comfortable staterooms, professional skippers, and even a seagoing chef. For Abed, it’s having the Channel Islands so close by that makes exploring our coast “like stepping back in time.” Whether you go for a day or a week, Abed assures that setting out from Santa Barbara means “sailing the best cruising grounds on earth.” ●

Guests gathered at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club for a Hamptons-inspired evening for MARYMOUNT OF SANTA BARBARA . As the sun set, white-clad partygoers dined at elegant tables garnished with hydrangeas and white linens. All together, the event raised more than $450,000 to support the school and its students.
