FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

This time of year in our storied environs is always romantic and pulsing with creative spirit. Besides the extra sparkle that comes with the holidays and the decorations dotting State Street and the Old Mission Santa Barbara, there is something in the air that makes it feel that much more festive. And once the New Year rolls around, our town switches into high gear to celebrate the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and all the glitz and glam that surrounds it. With the influx of actors, directors, writers, and movie aficionados, we celebrate the plentiful artistic endeavors that arise in the collective group. In our 2018 Culture Issue, we highlight artists who are pushing their boundaries in their respective mediums as well as the beauty that surrounds us at every turn. Cover star Catherine Zeta-Jones has seen her fair share of film festivals and movie premieres. Not content with an illustrious acting career and being married to one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars, Michael Douglas, she is now embarking on a business that brings her love of home and design to the masses (but hasn’t quit her day job). We speak with her about Catherine 2.0 and how Santa Barbara has played a role in her family’s traditions in “Irresistibly Catherine” (page 112). Family is a continuing theme in the abode of famed Santa Barbara painter James Jarvaise, whose grown children have kept their father’s spirit alive in the Mediterranean compound he lovingly cobbled together to create the ultimate artist’s retreat. A mix of old and newer buildings layered with antiques and artifacts collected along his life path, the home (“Artful Lives,” page 118) tells a story of love of family and love of craft. Speaking of craft, designer Zyrka Metcalfe works and lives in the famous Mountain Drive community full of its own history and lore from the 1960s. A creative in her own right, she has been inspired by the foothills and her family to make one-of-a-kind embellished blanket wraps that signal her ode to the past with a fresh look. We visit her maker’s studio (“Zyrkaland,” page 152) to capture the artisan within. Music is another form of artistic expression, and the DJ wunderkind Steve Aoki is at the forefront of cool. It’s a little-known fact that while he was studying at UC Santa Barbara, Aoki’s first chords in the world of beats started in Isla Vista. Spinning around the globe, creating new tracks, a record, and fashion label with a loyal following, we talk with Aoki about what motivates him in “One Step Beyond” (page 132). Alan Kozlowski was the photographer who visually recorded moments in music that changed us and, in turn, changed our shared memories. His photographic and cinematic portfolio of work is vast and full of icons—from Ravi Shankar to Jackson Browne, David Crosby to the Dalai Lama— inspiring us all. We sat with him (“The Big Picture,” page 138) at his downtown Santa Barbara loft to speak about a life lived fully—but with still so much more to do. And isn’t that the point of making art? To live life and express life in many mediums as long as it’s done in an honest, raw, groundbreaking, passionate, fully experienced way. Even more, if it is experienced in this idyllic Garden of Eden, a place of daily inspiration, I am not sure it gets better than that.

“It was so fun to hear about a side of Steve Aoki that often gets overlooked—his humble beginnings in Santa Barbara while attending UCSB,” says this Ojai-based writer who penned “One Step Beyond” (page 132). “He is an extremely thoughtful person who puts hard work and intention into every project he does.” S.B. MUST DOs Visiting my fine art photographer friend Lindsey Ross in the Funk Zone—I love seeing her surrounded by all her incredible creations. • Catching a match at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club—it is a nice change of pace and a super exciting game to watch. • Eating a delicious Southeast Asian meal at Sama Sama— love the inspired flavors of the dishes.

Cristina Trayfors

“Alan has been a family friend for many years and we live with his soulful images in our home, so this shoot was particularly special for me,” says the shutterbug who turned the lens on photographer/filmmaker Alan Kozlowski for “The Big Picture” (page 138). “His daughter, Lily, brightened an already magical environment, and Alan’s graciousness and beautiful guitar playing were just a few of the many blessings of the day.” S.B. MUST DOs The geography around Montecito and Toro Canyon takes my breath away time and time again. • Hendry’s Beach! We make the drive from Los Angeles with our Aussies (one of which gets car sick every time) because it’s the best dog beach we’ve found in California. • The San Ysidro Ranch for the magical setting and spectacular food.

Sam Frost

“This house had layers of history that allowed me to pretend I was traveling to another place and time,” says the photographer who captured the images of artist James Jarvaise’s eclectic home for “Artful Lives” (page 118). S.B. MUST DOs Mesa Verde for the food. • Channel Islands National Park for the hiking. • Santa Barbara Museum of Art to get a pulse of this town’s artistic point of view.

John Russo

“I loved spending time with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas,” says this Los Angeles-based photographer who captured the actress’s spirit in “Irresistibly Catherine” (page 112). “Catherine is definitely the life of the party—I absolutely loved her personality and energy.” S.B. MUST DOs Playing tennis at Westmont College on the weekends—it’s walking distance from my house, and it has the most beautiful courts. • My two favorite stores are Porch in Carpinteria and Hudson Grace in Montecito. • I love to go sailing at the Santa Barbara Sailing Center—after a busy week in L.A., it’s so relaxing to be out on the water. “The night before I interviewed Catherine, I watched her new movie Cocaine Godmother, where her portrayal of one of the most ruthless and murderous drug lords in history sent chills up my spine,” says Santa Barbara Magazine’s former features editor who wrote about Catherine Zeta-Jones for “Irresistibly Catherine” (page 112). “The next morning, I got a call from the sweetest person who opened up about her love of Santa Barbara, what it’s like to stay with her husband’s parents when she’s in town, and why she’s so proud when she hikes in the Douglas Family Preserve.” S.B. MUST DOs I was once an intern at Lotusland and will never forget the week I got to learn how to properly prune camellias and pine trees in the Japanese garden. • Rori’s Artisanal Creamery’s nondairy selections. • Thomas Cole’s Cold Spring Aloes is one of the great specialty nurseries in California.

Red Carpet READY “I always wanted the film festival to have a year-round home, but this has exceeded my expectations.”

Don’t Miss...

What a transformation! The RIVIERA THEATRE , now owned and operated by the nonprofit Santa Barbara International Film Festival, sbiff.org, reopened in September with a gorgeous renovation that has turned it into a state-of-the-art movie-lovers’ venue. It took nine months and cost $5 million, but patrons can now sink happily into the 328 roomy red plush seats, snack on artisanal treats, and watch films stunningly projected on a Dolby Vision system with Dolby Atmos sound emanating from 52 speakers. Notes SBIFF executive director Roger Durling, “There are not many movie theaters in the country with this system and we’re one of the few nonprofits. “We run it like an art house,” he adds, “and show documentaries and foreign films. There are no plans to bring the festival up here. That needs to be concentrated downtown. But we can use the theater for year-round screenings and other special programming. “I always wanted the film festival to have a yearround home,” says Durling, “but this has exceeded my expectations. What’s bittersweet is that this was a special property for Michael Towbes,” who didn’t live to see the result. “He told me he wanted someone to take care of the theater. This is above and beyond my dreams.” 2044 Alameda Padre Serra, Santa Barbara, 805-963-0023. J O A N T A P P E R

“We each buy our own things and then bring them in here and they look good together,” says Meredith Shank about SCOUT , the boutique she recently opened with her mother, Edie Caldwell. The 700-square-foot space is a carefully curated haven of vintage furniture and home decor. For Caldwell, who previously owned an art gallery in San Francisco, the purpose is twofold: “I think beautiful things make people happier and therefore less stressed out. And I’m having so much fun doing this with my 28-year-old daughter.” Sounds good to us. 35 E. Ortega St., Santa Barbara, 805-730-7333. L . D . From November 27 through January 2, our sister publication, C magazine, is launching a five-week pop-up shop—rightfully named STATE OF MIND —at the Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles that encompasses all things California style. The concept brings to life the pages of the magazine in an intimate setting featuring a curated selection of fashion and home goods handpicked by the editors themselves. Recognizable Santa Barbara brands such as Miller’s Oath and Sun Potion are just a few of the long list of chic vendors—also including Rodarte, Rosetta Getty, The Elder Statesman, Nick Fouquet, Juan Carlos Obando, Co, and more—whose wares will adorn the shelves of the store that has been designed by Martha Mulholland (her retail projects include the L.A. outpost of The Line). “The next evolution of the C brand is an organic one—the shop pays tribute to the community of California designers, artists, makers, and creators that the magazine celebrates throughout its pages in every issue,” says founder and editorial director Jennifer Hale (also publisher and editorial director of Santa Barbara Magazine) on the brainstorm behind the store. After the official launch of the pop-up, the C team is hosting events highlighting designers such as florist Eric Buterbaugh and weekly panel discussions featuring speakers from the industries of fashion, beauty, and design. 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. Western Australia native ALANA CLUMECK ’s solo exhibition “Wallflower” is currently on display through December 31 at Wendy Foster Los Olivos, 805-686-0110, wendyfoster.com. Clumeck grew up in an artful abode but didn’t take to the canvas until a few years ago. Now she’s known for her vibrant visions of wildlife, cowboy culture, and flowers. “‘Wallflower’ is a play on words. In old Australian slang, a wallflower is a bit of an introvert but of full personality if you dig deep enough to get to know them,” says the Santa Ynez-based mom of two. “I wanted my paintings to not only be aesthetically pleasing but also have substance.” The artist recently paired up with ER Leather Goods’ Emily DaFoe for a cool collab—Clumeck’s vibrant florals painted onto Dafoe’s signature whipstitch clutches. At the new VARIANT TRAINING LAB , members undergo a comprehensive evaluation using state-of-the-art equipment (like force plates and ultra high-speed cameras) to immediately target the most effective and healthy training methods and identify any underlying conditions that may be hindering their fitness objectives. “Bridging the medical industry with physical therapy and strength and conditioning is a vision I have had for a long time,” says chief operating officer Evan Pratt. “With Variant Training Lab, we are able to implement our strategy on a much higher level and resonate with all audiences.” The facility offers educational seminars one to two times a month with the goal of being an information hub for 360-degree wellness backed by their scientific research platform Research Institute of Human Movement, which is dedicated to translating, creating, and applying published research. Integrated training includes a full spectrum of equipment, a 40-yard indoor track and turf run, classes, and medical clinicians, data scientists, and performance personnel. “By staffing Variant with medical providers, our aim is to avoid many of the nerve, muscle, and skeletal conditions that require medical attention to begin with,” explains cofounder Maury Hayashida. With the goal of eventually expanding to other cities, Variant offers results-driven training tools and data tracking during each session for everyday wellness seekers and high-profile professional athletes alike. 314 State St., Santa Barbara, 805-270-3004. Olivia Seltzer is the 13-years-young creator of THECRAMM.COM , a simple daily newsletter delivered via text or e-mail. Seltzer created it to inspire her generation to read the news to understand what’s going on around the globe. “After all,” she says, “we couldn’t rule the world if we didn’t know what was happening in it.” The 2016 presidential election inspired and expanded Seltzer’s interest in politics. She started waking up around 5 am to read news articles and curate groups of stories she deemed important, then summarized them to be more relatable for kids. “Every major news source is written by and geared toward adults, so unfortunately, they don’t always connect with people my age,” says the 8th grader at Santa Barbara Junior High. “I ended up writing theCramm how I talk to my friends: straight to the point but also sarcastic and funny.” Her goal is to get the younger generation interested in the world beyond their cell phones. But theCramm isn’t only for teens and young adults; Seltzer has subscribers age 40 and older who rely on her free, fresh, aggregated content for their daily news. “Every day, we get more people reading it all around the world—from the United Kingdom to Australia, Pakistan to China,” she says. “I believe the more people I can inform, the better a place the world will be.” B R I A T A Y L O R

Charging Upgrade

Running late and need a charge? FUELBOX , a local tech startup cofounded by Dan Friedman and Robert Herr, has created the newest portable charger for your phone or other devices: the Ultimate Charging Solution ($119.99). The charging accessory has two parts: the boostPack and the Dock, both of which have Apple Lightning and micro-USB cables, and a USB port and surge-protected outlets on the Dock. The boostPack has the battery life to fully charge your phone two to four times, and it does so quicker than its competitors. “Robert and I have a dream to build Fuelbox into the leader of mobile power,” says Friedman, “and make sure everyone has access to power when they need it most.” And the duo has lived up to this. Currently, Fuelbox has partnered with Nokia and Verizon, supplying their chargers to Hurricane Irma first responders. Fuelbox has a new, slimmer model in the works, and plans to eventually have the capabilities to power buildings and things beyond mobile devices. 805-845-3431. GIVING BACK

“We understand that we can dramatically affect lives for the better, and not just the kids who we are helping, but the students like myself and those who have the chance to run the organization and participate in it.” —ELIZABETH KRAVCHUK

Granada Theatre; OLIVIA JONES and a student from KHK’s supported Club Hope in Nicaragua; ANDRE LACOMARE and a student on a service-learning trip in Nicaragua.

Role Models

Nonprofit organizations all around the world have many different missions. Whether it be helping the hungry, helping the sick, or helping animals and the environment, these missions are all very different, yet each has one thing in common: they are passionate about what they do and what they represent. KIDS HELPING KIDS (KHK) has this passion. KHK is a nonprofit run entirely by 12th-grade students in the advanced placement economics class at San Marcos High School. The organization came about when economics teacher Jamie DeVries wanted to create a different kind of curriculum for his students. In 2002, he started a penny drive to raise money for Unity Shoppe at the former Ruby’s Diner in Paseo Nuevo, and the organization was born. “We like to say that learning is best by doing,” says DeVries, “and doing is best done by helping others.” Since its inception, KHK has raised more than $2.2 million to invest in the lives of kids needing socioeconomic and physical support—from subsidizing SAT fees for local families who can’t afford them to funding the building of a preschool in Rwanda. “Fifty percent of our funds go to international causes the kids feel deeply about and 50 percent goes to local children,” says DeVries. “The students in KHK have a senior leadership team that listens to the input from all 140 members, and then with the consent of

our board, they make their allocations known.” A large part of the fund-raising comes from KHK’s annual benefit gala concert at the Granada Theatre— the last event featured artists such as Sara Bareilles, and Gavin DeGraw. Andy Grammer is playing on January 12 and Needtobreathe on January 13 for the 10th anniversary concert. KHK started small and has grown to become a recognized and successful nonprofit; it raised roughly $400,000 from August 2016 to January 2017. The members of the organization have a passion for helping others in need and are finding ways to ensure those people get that help every day. “It’s been the honor of my life to see this organization transform into what it is today,” says DeVries, “In the years to come, I see a community of young adults passionate about meeting the needs of our society in the 21st century and putting their creative talents to use in a profound way.” Says KHK CEO Elizabeth Kravchuk: “We, as the KHK body, understand that we can dramatically affect lives for the better, and not just the kids who we are helping, but the students like myself and those who have the chance to run the organization and participate in it.” J . In a magnanimous move that’s rare in the world of highstakes celebrity dressing, top model Gigi Hadid has given much of the credit for her 2017 look to another young Santa Barbara native, 26-year-old stylist MIMI CUTTRELL . The all-important hashtag #styledbymigi, a mash-up of their first names, has been trending on Instagram since May, and it was Hadid’s idea. In July, after a particularly exciting period of sensational street style images hit the Internet, the fashion press began celebrating the Cuttrell-Hadid combination as something special. Following online coverage by Vogue and Vanity Fair, People devoted a full page in their Fourth of July issue to Cuttrell’s looks for Hadid. When asked why she thinks what she has been doing with Hadid has been such a hit, Cuttrell, who has known Hadid since they were teenagers in Santa Barbara, said, “When we are together, it’s actually kind of effortless. I think that the easy way we collaborate helps give it that shine.” Giving Hadid’s street style a relaxed vibe and then elevating it with top designers is one part of it. But, as Cuttrell explains, the real secret is how they come together on the fit. “The tailoring is key,” she says. Often monochromatic, sometimes maximalist, and always high fashion, Hadid consistently comes across as relaxed and happy—everywhere from the red carpet to the farmers market. The distinction is important at OLIVER’S : “Our menu is plant based rather than vegan,” says Phillip Thompson, assistant general manager and cultural ambassador. “‘Vegan’ refers to a whole lifestyle, and we don’t want to infringe on that. We’re about getting as close to ingredients as possible with the least amount of processing.” That plant slant—a total focus on vegetarian ingredients, which sets it apart from most other Santa Barbara restaurants—was part of the Oliver’s buzz well before it opened in September. That, and its visibility—the corner spot in Montecito that long housed Peabody’s before its closure in 2012. Today, Oliver’s is wowing guests with dishes that, despite the absence of animal proteins, are made with extra attention to flavor and texture and driven by what’s regional and seasonal. “We wanted to bring this healthful but incredibly delicious cuisine to a group of people who may not be familiar with it,” adds Thompson. To that end, the menu—a creative lineup by chef Craig Riker—delivers recognizable dishes with a green spin. The wild mushroom

tostada comes with jalapeño guacamole. The pad thai is made with kelp noodles and has a pistachio crunch. The avocado toast comes on turmeric oat bread. And yes, there’s a veggie burger. Chef Riker and his team are farmers market regulars and contract with a string of local growers. Juice Ranch provides fresh-squeezed cold-pressed organic juices daily that are combined with premium spirits for the signature cocktails, and seating, indoors or out, is cushioned by ample spacing between tables. 1198 Coast Village Rd.,

Raise a GLASS

On October 28, Santa Barbara lost a grand wine ambassador and dear friend. To know SETH KUNIN was to experience his boundless hospitality, laughter, and kindness. His generosity touched people not only in our town but all over the world. Seth always brought far more than his share to the table. If you invited him to dinner, you would find him at your stove. If you had a project, he’d be there helping you build it. With him, no day was ordinary, no meal humdrum; everything was one for the books. Seth knew how to live. He was a dreamer, but more importantly, he was a doer who rolled up his sleeves and made things happen—a difficult harvest, an international wine event, and two hand-built tasting rooms (Kunin Wines and The Valley Project) that helped put our Funk Zone on the map. His greatest loves were his wife and daughter, Magan and Phoebe, and his circle of friends, all of whom he graced with authenticity, character, and class. In life’s most difficult moments, when you needed someone to answer, Seth always picked up. He was our rock. Seth’s passing leaves an enormous void. His enthusiasm for life and the tragic unexpectedness of his passing are a reminder for all

of us to love and live better during this short time we share. Let’s soothe our sorrows by looking at his 50 years as one great vintage. For years to come, may we celebrate the gift of his life at dinner parties, in stories, and as an unflagging reminder of the way to treat each other. To borrow a line from Seth himself, we say, “Well done, Sir.” T E D V A N C E

Taste Made from Scratch

After shuttering the beloved Montecito Cafe in late 2016, the Montecito Inn is welcoming not one but four dining concepts by SCRATCH|RESTAURANTS . For this new venture, chef/ owner Phillip Frankland Lee, pastry chef Margarita KallasLee, designer Jordan Olson, and the Copus family (owners of the inn since 1989) have come together to create myriad dining options for hotel guests and locals alike. The first is Frankland’s Crab & Co. serving modern seafood staples such as clam chowder, lobster rolls, and fish & chips for dine-in or takeaway. Margarita’s Homemade Iced Cream is offering “composed cones” of unusual flavors such as Camembert ice cream with wild honey and lavender sprinkles in a sourdough waffle cone. In honor of the Central Coast, The Monarch will feature a seasonal menu from which every item is sourced locally—“it’s so rare and special to have this self-sustainable ecosystem of gastronomy; it’s like the Mediterranean tradition here in California. Why not fuel the restaurant entirely with the gems of this region?” says Lee— and lastly, Lee’s Silver Bough will be an indulgent artisanal fine-dining experience. Says Lee: “We’ve chosen the dining concepts here very carefully, looking at the neighborhood and what people like to eat. Each one we’ve come up with is a different experience, yet each complements the others without competing with each other. And of course, the wonderful Copus family ties us all together under one roof in their beautiful historic property.” 1295 Coast Village Rd.,

With a foreword by fellow chef Cat Cora, this ode to veggies also includes charming personal anecdotes that illustrate Beale’s inspiration.

“It’s very much like dancing with a paintbrush,” says artist JANE CALLISTER about her most recent series of paintings. Departing from her usual technique of pouring paint to create abstracted landscapes, Callister has begun wielding a double-headed brush, a process that clearly documents her gestures on the canvas. Callister’s first forays using this technique focused on varying shades of gray, a nostalgic nod to the often cloudy skies of her native Isle of Man. Further exploration led to vibrant color combinations, reflecting the sunshine of her adopted homeland—Santa Barbara. A side-by-side comparison of the two color schemes provokes a fascinating dialogue about light, shadow, and movement. Callister has been included in more than 100 exhibitions worldwide and has been a professor of art at UC Santa Barbara for 21 years. A show of her latest paintings opens January 7 at Royale Projects in Los Angeles. L . D . P O R T E R

The Write Stuff Like Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne, TRACY AND SIMON TOLKIEN —with nine books between them—are

a literary power couple. The two met in 1982 in Oxford, England—where Tracy was studying the work of T.S. Eliot— just days before she returned to her native St. Louis. Britishborn Simon was enraptured and wrote to her daily for a year until Tracy agreed to come back to England. Marriage and children followed; the family relocated to Santa Barbara six years ago. “We came because we put a pin on the map,” says Simon, somewhat in jest. Clockwise from Adds Tracy, “We came top right: Vintage 1970s Yves Saint here as part of a holiday, Laurent metal belt and we never looked at with faux turquoise another place.” cabochons available Neither started out as on Tracy Tolkien’s a writer. Simon began his 1stdibs store; professional career as a TRACY AND criminal lawyer (Britain SIMON TOLKIEN at home in Hope separates legal tasks Ranch with Roxy, between solicitors and

barristers—Simon was both). He had always wanted to be a writer but was overwhelmed by the shadow of his worldfamous grandfather J.R.R. Tolkien, who penned The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Even so, he eventually made the plunge, starting with courtroom dramas (Final Witness, Inheritance) and moving on to historical thrillers (King of Diamonds, Orders from Berlin). In his most recent work, No Man’s Land (2016, Doubleday)—the fictional story of a young man whose life is upended by love and war—Simon pays literary tribute to his grandfather’s World War I experiences. A true history buff—it was his major at Trinity College—Simon’s books span the 20th century. Tracy’s path to writing was also indirect. Finding a dearth of jobs in London for her art history degree, she noticed the local antique market sold costume jewelry similar to what her mother collected at home. After buyers eagerly scooped up a box of jewelry her mother sent, Tracy was hooked and opened her own space. Ultimately, her passion for vintage included clothing as well, leading to the creation of Steinberg & Tolkien, a 10,000-square-foot store in Chelsea. (The store’s inventory was legendary; its closure in 2007 was mourned by London’s Daily Mail.) In her spare time, Tracy began writing about her wares, authoring four authoritative books including Dressing Up Vintage (2000, Rizzoli), focusing on the ins and outs of collecting vintage items. She hasn’t entirely abandoned retail; Tracy stocks several cases and a booth at the Antique Center Mall, 805-967-5700, antiquecentermall.com, on Hollister Avenue and maintains her online store Steinberg & Tolkien on 1st Dibs, 1stdibs.com/dealers/steinberg-and-tolkien. In the Beginning

The “SACRED SPIRIT EXHIBITION” —on view at a private gallery space in Montecito until December 17—is a display of stunning contemporary New Zealand artwork, but to describe it that way is to seriously misconstrue its meaning. Rather, the pieces are meant to encourage viewers to take a personal journey, first to identify with ancient peoples of the world and then to explore the creation stories told by Maori elders. The exhibit dates back to 2003, when New Zealand writer Barry Brailsford, who’d been invited to collect sacred Maori lore, published Song of the Old Tides and launched his book with a display of 12 new pou whenua (standing posts or totems) by sculptor and stonemason Maaka Tipa. Santa Barbara Middle School founder Kent Ferguson happened to be on hand, a number of cross-cultural New Zealand-Santa Barbara educational exchanges followed, and now the exhibit has been reassembled and transported to California. An audio docent tour guides visitors through three galleries. In the first are eight tanned hides, each incised and colorfully inked by Maaka Tipa and hung over silks by textile artist Jan Blythe; these evoke the Stone People, the Water People, and the Star People, among others. A second gallery—centered by a stone of reconciliation and healing in a basin of water—includes a gateway carved by schoolchildren in Christchurch as well as their image of three generations caught in the web of life. In the third are the dozen standing posts—each roughly seven feet tall—which capture the old wisdom in a contemporary way, evocatively using wood, stone, ceramics, paint, and feathers to symbolically depict a journey from creation to the flame of hope…and beyond. Centennial Celebration

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the SANTA BARBARA CENTRAL LIBRARY , the largest library in Santa Barbara County and a community hub

that has been serving locals since 1917. Architect Francis Wilson designed the original building, which faced major damage in the 1925 earthquake. After several remodels and a new children’s library in 2015, it now offers not only noteworthy reads but an exhibition space for local artists and free community programs, book clubs, children’s early literacy education, the Santa Barbara Reads program, adult literacy services, computer classes, job readiness training, STEAM programming, and a tech lab featuring 3D printers open for public use. To celebrate all that the central library and staff have provided to the community during the past century, various events were held throughout the fall of 2017, culminating in the Cocktails & Culture gala that took place in early November. 40 E. MONIQUE MEUNIER remembers the day her life changed forever. It was a rainy Sunday morning in her hometown of Los Angeles, the day she was scheduled to audition for the School of American Ballet summer program. She was 15 and had been dancing since the age of 4. “It was the fork in the road that became my career,” she says. She was accepted into the summer program on full scholarship, and a year later was welcomed into the corps of the New York City Ballet, where she remained for the next 16 years. (Memorable performances include dancing the principal role in Swan Lake with future husband Nilas Martins, son of ballet master Peter Martins.) A five-year stint with American Ballet Theatre followed as well as international tours with Complexions Contemporary Ballet. At that point, Meunier retired from the stage and began teaching and choreographing dance. She recently relocated to Goleta with her husband and their 5-year-old daughter to join the faculty of UC Santa Barbara’s department of theater and dance. Dedicated to diversity—her father is Cuban and her mother Ecuadorian— Meunier has arranged for superstar Misty Copeland, ABT’s first African American principal dancer, to speak to local dance students in December. Don’t miss Still I Rise, Meunier’s dance/ music/poetry event (free) performed by students inside UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum, museum.ucsb.edu, on January 31 and February 1. L . D . P

All-Seeing Eye

One hallmark of a great artist is the capacity to make us see the extraordinary in the ordinary. On her daily walk, artist MARIA RENDON has a habit of looking closely at stains on asphalt, which inspire the forms in her paintings. She’s attracted to stains because “they fade, and their shape dissipates through time; and, in a way, we all fade or we all change.” Rendon’s ability to transform asphalt blotches into a subtle visual statement about the transitory nature of our lives makes for powerful, elegant art. Born in Mexico City, Rendon came to California in 1990 to pursue a BFA at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design; in 2001, she relocated to Santa Barbara, where she obtained an MFA from UCSB. Rendon’s work is frequently exhibited, most recently at the “SUR:biennial” part of “Pacific Standard Time LA/LA” and in “Brand 45,” an annual juried exhibition of works on paper at Glendale’s Brand Library. Until December 2, she’s part of “Wrong II,” a group show at L.A.’s PØST gallery. L . D . P

Folk HERO Santa Barbara’s eclectic music scene got even better this year with the birth of the FOLK ORCHESTRA OF SANTA BARBARA , a 29-piece ensemble of local musicians who know and love to play bagpipes, mandolins, Irish whistles, and a full contingent of classical string instruments. It’s the brainchild of Adam Phillips, a multitalented transplant from Alexander, New York, who relocated to Santa Barbara 12 years ago after obtaining a BFA in musical theater from SUNY Fredonia. He’s shared his vocal talents with Quire of Voyces and Opera Santa Barbara, among others. In addition to leading the orchestra, he’s the director of music and worship at Good Shepard Lutheran Church of Goleta. It took Phillips just slightly more than three months to gather his favorite local musicians who were excited at the thought of playing folk music with an orchestra. “Pretty much everyone said yes,” he says. The added bonus of weekly rehearsals at Telegraph Brewing Company may have helped. Performances take place in the historic high-ceilinged

Chapel of El Presidio de Santa Bárbara. The orchestra already has a strong following; its debut concert of Celtic music was a sellout. Seeing Phillips conduct while playing bagpipes is part of the fun. A Scottish program (tickets: $26.50) is scheduled for November 30 and December 3. 805-260-3223. L . D . P .

“We’re a modern music school,” says musician/teacher Erland Wanberg, founder of MUSICOLOGY SANTA BARBARA , a new organization offering a variety of exciting music education opportunities in town. In addition to lessons in guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice, it teaches songwriting and recording (with Joe Costner of Spartan Recording). And thanks to the generosity of the Music Academy of the West, Wanberg and his fellow teachers have the use of three newly built classrooms on the academy’s magnificent grounds. But there’s more. Underwritten by local philanthropist George Hagerman, Musicology has partnered with the Santa Barbara Police Activities League to provide weekly one-on-one music lessons to 35 underprivileged children and teens. Wanberg is an openhearted visionary. A California native who taught himself guitar at age 15, his musical journey includes touring the nation and a stint in Nashville where he developed his songwriting chops. Now he’s helping others discover the magic in music. “It’s about inspiring people to make music,” Wanberg says, “and it doesn’t matter what kind.” Bravo! 1070 Fairway Rd., Montecito, 805-8453328. L . dates back to 1180;

When guests book an exclusive stay at KILKEA CASTLE , they get the run of the grounds: 11 luxe rooms, a stately dining room, a waitstaff and private chef, a fireplace lounge, and a full bar inside the towering 12th-century castle, along with a brand-new 18-hole golf course. Leisure activities on the 180-acre estate range from falconry to fishing. Other individual rooms and lodges are scattered throughout the 180-acre estate. The reimagined Kilkea, in lush County Kildare about an hour west of Dublin, is one of Ireland’s oldest continuously inhabited castles, built by noblemen in 1180. It went through a five-year, €30 million face-lift after Boston construction magnate Jay Cashman bought the property in 2012, and it recently reopened to the world as a five-star resort. A timeless medieval allure remains, with its stone walls, fortress doors, and beech-lined roads, but contemporary creature comforts—from central heating to fancy fixtures to WiFi—prevail. That special balance between old and new is now defining much of Ireland’s luxury travel market, as numerous properties reemerge from a decade-long economic slip and after major renovations. The famous Ashford Castle, for example, recently underwent a €75 million revamp. The grand reopening of ADARE MANOR in November, after an 18-month closure, was one of Emerald Isle’s most anticipated. A pet project of horse racing tycoon J.P. McManus, one of Ireland’s wealthiest men, the gorgeous neo-Gothic estate on 840 acres now has 42 more luxury rooms, a lavish ballroom, a state-of-the-art golf course, and the only La Mer spa in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The resort, nestled in County Limerick, has an eye on the global market, with special attention to Americans. “More than 60 percent of our guests are from the United States,” says general manager Paul Heery. “I get spoiled every time I’m in Santa Barbara,” says actress Catherine Zeta-Jones of the experience of staying with her mother and father-in-law, Anne and Kirk Douglas, when her family visits the Central Coast. “We stay with Pappy and Oma in their house, of course. Kirk is Pappy and Anne is Oma. All the grandkids call them Pappy and Oma and I call them that as well. I’m a kid at heart too.” To welcome their son Michael’s wife to the family years ago, the Douglases had a plaque made for the guest suite. “They named it the Zeta Suite and it’s still on the door,” says Zeta-Jones. “They have that old-school way of knowing how a guest should feel. They just treat you right.” The Oscar-winning actress—who, along with her equally famous husband, has residences in Bermuda, Spain, and the upstate New York town of New Bedford (“I think we collect homes more than we collect art,” she says)—knows a thing or two herself about making a comfortable nest. Recently, she launched her first home-goods collection on QVC, cleverly titled Casa Zeta Jones, which includes bedding, rugs, tablecloths, pillows, even a comfy robe with a faux-fur collar. It’s a project she’s dreamed of doing for years, inspired by everything from her Welsh roots (Celtic knots figure into certain designs) to her sojourns to far-flung spots such as Istanbul and Morocco. “I’m always on the search for stuff. I think my real passion is creating a home environment, because having a private place is such a solace for me and Michael. I wanted to take it a step further and create a brand that’s beautiful, elegant, accessible, affordable, and high quality,” says the Chicago, Traffic, and Mask of Zorro star who describes her decorating style as traditional—“but not heavy”—with art deco and even modern touches. “It’s eclectic. I mix a lot of real, serious pieces with, you know, treasures I find along the way whether it’s while traveling or at thrift stores or on eBay,” she says. “I love a good bargain.” Following up on her recent turn as Olivia de Havilland in Ryan Murphy’s Feud miniseries, Zeta-Jones will be back on the screen in January with her first lead role in nearly five years, a meaty part that has her playing a notoriously murderous drug lord, the real-life Griselda Blanco in the new Lifetime movie Cocaine Godmother. In it, she’s eerily convincing as the infamous cutthroat who was said to have invented the drive-by motorcycle shooting and was responsible for the murders of some 200 people in Colombia, Miami, New York, and Southern California during a crime run that spanned from the late 1970s to her death in 2012. “My family saw a very early cut and my husband got a little scared for a minute,” says Zeta-Jones, who says it’s a part she’s wanted to play for a long time. “These deeper roles don’t come around very often. This is a woman

who has no redeemable qualities. I’m totally against everything she stands for. But there’s a fascinating character in there who’s very sad and very tortured, a person who came from the gutter and became the most powerful and feared woman in that world.” Catherine and Michael’s holidays from work— he’s recently been shooting the sequel to Ant Man in Atlanta—are often spent in Santa Barbara where family takes center stage. Their daughter Carys is 14; son Dylan, who loves the opportunity to surf, is 17. “I know I’m biased, but it’s the proudest thing Michael and I have ever done. They are just great kids,” says Zeta-Jones, who calls herself “the best Catholic Jewish mother you’ll ever meet. I was christened Catholic and my husband is Jewish. Our kids have both chosen the Jewish faith and they were bar and bat mitzvahed. Kirk and Anne were so happy.” Among the things the family likes to do in Santa Barbara are attend the film festival, swim at the Coral Casino, and take walks at the Douglas Family Preserve, the largest area of coastal open space within the Santa Barbara city limits. It got its name in the mid-1990s after Michael donated a crucial $600,000 (out of a total cost of $3.6 million) to help preserve it from development. “We go walking and we feel very proud that coastline is protected. Santa Barbara is one of the most beautiful places in the world and I’m not just talking about the fantastic microclimate. There’s a wonderful artistic community here that we just fit into. It’s just a very special place for me.” ●

Lives

The Jarvaise family legacy WRITTEN BY

It’s probably true that artists live more interesting lives than the rest of us. Despite the major challenges most creatives encounter—lack of financial security and the constant struggle for recognition—their lives just seem more glamorous and less boring than ours. Consider Santa Barbara painter James Jarvaise (19242015), who, while establishing an important body of his own work, mentored an entire generation of artists. Of equal importance was the inspiring way he led his life, a wholehearted embrace of creativity, culture, and family. “He was the coolest guy ever,” says daughter Anna of her father. “Everything was just visual and aesthetic.” “Everything” included the Jarvaise family compound in Santa Barbara. Acquired in 1970 by James and wife Lorraine for their growing family

(the couple had five children), the one-acre property boasts a cluster of three Spanish-style buildings, each with its own courtyard, garden patio, and fountain. Over time, James added creative touches everywhere: intricate tile work, stained glass windows, decorative fireplaces, antique wood doors, and, of course, his own large-scale artworks. Anna (a painter) and her brother, Jean (an electrical engineer who does sculpture), currently live on the property with their partners and share fond memories of growing up in an artistically driven household. At one point, the front yard was planted with grapes so the family could make wine. “It wasn’t big enough to do anything major,” notes Jean, while admitting his father was serious enough to own a tractor. (Summers were spent in a tiny hilltop town in Spain, where the

He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, where his talent was recognized in elementary school. He was chosen to participate in art classes at Carnegie Tech, but his talent was put on hold during World War II while he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following the war, James traveled to Paris where he met Japanese-American painter Matsumi (Mike) Kanemitsu. Both young men studied with renowned artist Fernand Léger, who “would show up once in awhile…and say something about everyone’s painting,” James recalled in an interview. (James and Kanemitsu remained friends, and the two ended up teaching together at Chouinard Art Institute—now CalArts—in Los Angeles.) Returning from Europe, James pursued a fine arts degree in drawing and painting at USC (where he met future wife Lorraine) and also earned an MFA there. He then embarked on a teaching career that would span more than 30 years and several institutions (USC, Chouinard Art Institute, Occidental College, Oxnard College). Noted artists Robert Therrien and Henry Taylor are two former students who credit James as

having an important influence on their work. In 1959, James was included in “Sixteen Americans,” an exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. A number of other artists in the show— Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Louise Nevelson, Frank Stella—became household names. At the time, none other than legendary gallerist Peggy Guggenheim encouraged James to move to New York; and it’s generally agreed that had James relocated, the trajectory of his career would have been different. “He just didn’t want to do it,” says Jean. “He was raising his family here and so he opted to stay in California.” Adds Anna, “He didn’t like to self-promote.” Even so, James never stopped making and exhibiting art, and his work resides in museum collections throughout the United States, including Washington, D.C.’s Hirshhorn Museum, New York’s MOMA, LACMA, and, closer to home, UC Santa Barbara’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum. Shortly before his death in 2015, James exhibited his collages at Louis Stern Fine Arts in Los Angeles. After viewing the show, art critic Hunter DrohojowskaPhilp remarked, “The most youthful art that I have seen this month is produced by James Jarvaise, who is 91.” A fitting tribute to a supremely talented artist who lived life on his own terms, created beauty around him, and inspired others to do the same. ●

“I’ll sleep when I am dead.” The motto is tattooed on the back of DJ and electronic dance spin master Steve Aoki’s neck, and it says it all. Living true to this adage has its advantages—he never stops moving. Aoki’s compulsive work ethic compliments his whirlwind lifestyle, complete with private jets and all-nighters from New York City to Paris to Ibiza S A N TA B A R B A R A

and residencies in Las Vegas. He’s famous for his parties, wild romps onstage, crowd surfing, and especially his cake-throwing antics. His penchant for spraying champagne onto an enthralled and pulsing audience during his sets is legendary. “I grew up in Newport Beach where it was 96 percent white. It was confusing for me. As an Asian American, I could not see where I fit in. I was the weirdo. Aoki finally felt his footing while at college at UCSB studying feminist studies and sociology.

in California. “Let’s wind back the clocks,” Aoki laughs. “I grew up in Newport Beach where it was 96 percent white. It was confusing for me. As an Asian American, I could not see where I fit in. I was the weirdo.” It was not until Aoki was in college at UC Santa Barbara (earning degrees in feminist studies and sociology) that he ceased feeling isolated and found his footing. “As a student, I was the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed kid who wanted to change the world. In Santa Barbara, I figured out how to use my voice for the first time. I was desperately trying to make some noise and do something with my feelings and my thoughts,” he shares. “That time was really important; it propelled me to learn more about my identity, which I then related back into my music. Music became a tool to share the information and feelings in my head.” His time in Santa Barbara became the foundation for Aoki’s life in more ways than one. While at UCSB, Aoki played—and also hosted—hard-core punk shows in his house in Isla Vista. The shows became so popular that his living room was dubbed the Pickle Patch. Aoki hosted more than 80 bands a month, and it was the place to be. Most of the acts that played at the Pickle Patch did not have record labels and were not signed. Starting his record label Dim Mak in 1996 “seemed like the natural thing to do,” he says. (Dim Mak is a reference to Bruce Lee’s martial art death touch technique—striking certain

points on the body to cause illness or death.) “I never touched a turntable when I was in college, I only had a record player—two very different things,” he laughs. This was all pre-DJ life. Aoki chose to leave academia and moved to Los Angeles where he met up with a group called The Kills and put Dim Mak on the map. “When I wasn’t touring with The Kills, I was trying to get Dim Mak off the ground. I’d throw parties in L.A. introducing the bands I was producing, and that’s when I started DJing. I invited all my friends, and that’s how it all got started.” These days, the 39-year-old Aoki splits his time between DJing (which is a constant), and promoting his first hip-hop album Kolony, which includes some of the biggest names in the rap world: Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, 2 Chainz, Wale T Pain, Gucci Mane, Ricky Remedy, and more. It’s a change of pace from Aoki’s usual electronica house music. Aoki additionally spearheads his own fashion brand, also called Dim Mak, as well as teaming with Topshop, where his Vision Street Wear collection is set to launch in early 2018. A staunch perfectionist, Aoki always seeks to improve his game. “It’s very important to me to be on top of the world, but I can never put my feet up because the top is just one peak and there are more.” When asked how he unplugs, Aoki chuckles. “Unplugging…I still have to learn how to do that. Maybe that’s my next goal.” ●

You could call Alan Kozlowski a photographer. But then you’d have to add that he also happens to be an accomplished musician in multiple genres, including Indian, classical, and flamenco; a filmmaker with features, documentaries, and art-house productions to his credit; the cofounder and CEO of an Academy Award-winning postproduction studio; and the creator of Samudra, an award-winning retreat in Thailand. And you’d still be missing the most important thing, which is that Kozlowski has been on some kind of spiritual walkabout his entire life. Born in Oakland, Kozlowski has lived in Santa Barbara on and off for five decades. His downtown loft—home for the past four years—is filled with artwork and rare musical instruments and objects from his journeys, including mementos of his spiritual masters. The first and perhaps most important path he followed was that of Ravi Shankar, the fabled Indian musician. “I first saw him perform at the Shrine Auditorium in San Francisco in 1965,” Kozlowski says. “Thirteen years later, I produced a multimedia slide

For Shankar’s 75th birthday in 1995, he coproduced with George Harrison a fourCD box set of Shankar’s work, titled In Celebration. Kozlowski also produced a documentary on Shankar’s life, Sangeet Ratna (meaning “Jewel of Music”), which was shown at his memorials around the world when he passed in 2012. “There’s this guru/disciple relationship where the guru takes on the student for life,” Kozlowski says, describing their bond. Images of Shankar adorn the walls of his loft. In one, the 5’2” Shankar poses with Kozlowski, a gentle giant at 6’4”. In another, Shankar smiles alongside Jeff Bridges and Jackson Browne— all three are godfathers to Kozlowski’s beloved 12-year-old daughter, Lily. “Ravi gave Lily her middle name, Kalyani, which means ‘blessing,’” says Kozlowski. “He taught me about finding the moment, dedication, and the improvisational aspect of life.” A second path led Kozlowski in the direction of filmmaking. It started, oddly enough, at the moment where Kozlowski’s life took a detour from the Summer of Love in Haight-Ashbury to a Santa Barbara monastery on Garden Street in 1970. “I went from free love and music to being a celibate monk for four years, sleeping on a plywood plank,” he says. “They needed someone to do their audio recording, so I joined their staff and produced multimedia for their presentations.” “I was paid $15 a month plus room and board, so I definitely wasn’t in it for the money,” he laughs. “The gift of that time is that I was able to focus on learning and perfecting the techniques of my craft.” Kozlowski later opened a postproduction facility in Santa Monica that eventually became Pacific Ocean Post. “Haskell Wexler, a legendary cinematographer and Montecito resident, took me under his wing,” he says. “And Jac Holzman, founder of Electra Records, mentored me as I made the journey from a technical creative person to CEO. Then I sold the company in 1998 so

I could return to being an artist. A third path took Kozlowski through the realms of Eastern spirituality and many journeys through India, Tibet, Bhutan, and Mongolia. He produced and directed Return to Dzongsar, a 2001 documentary about Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, who is

widely regarded in the Buddhist world as the reincarnate of three venerated Buddhist teachers. Along with his son, Stephen, a Brooklyn-based cameraman, Kozlowski also worked as director of photography on the 2003 Travellers and Magicians, the first feature film shot in Bhutan.

Other spiritual leaders have shown up in serendipitous ways. A photograph in his home captures a meeting between Kozlowski and the Dalai Lama just before Kozlowski was to speak at a memorial for Shankar. “He put my face in his hands and zapped me with his energy,” says Kozlowski. “I have never felt anything so powerful.” And some of his most fruitful collaborative re-

lationships have evolved over time with friends right here in town. He worked with Jackson Browne for 37 years, producing, among other works, the award-winning Going Home. His 21-year partnership with Jeff Bridges includes acting as director of photography on his American Masters PBS special and collaboration on three books of photography and philosophy. An ARTISAN’S dreamy vision born of years of collecting vintage curiosities, the love of Pendleton blankets, and meandering days at her

Mountain Drive family compound

Santa Barbaran Zyrka Metcalfe crafts her eclectic woolen wraps with Pendleton wool blankets, beaver bones, copper bells, cow teeth, and other found treasures. The family cottage of the mother of two young boys doubles as a work studio where time spent designing her pieces is interspersed with gardening, hosting events on the expansive and picturesque lawn, and interacting with the creative community that inhabits the historic Oakleigh property—an old summer camp in the foothills that now shelters some of Santa Barbara’s brightest visionaries and artists. “This home is the culmination of everything I dreamed of and hoped for in my life,” says Zyrka, who relishes the sanctuary she has created with her husband, Jeff Metcalfe. Zyrka grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania but was born in Santa Barbara, so her roots to our town have always been strong, and she attributes her creativity to her mother, Mary D’Arcy, a local collector and maker. The two work together on sourcing unique items such as hand-cut buckskin lacing, vintage and antique holy medals, animal bones, African trade beads, milagros (religious folk charms), and other talismans that embellish Zyrka’s raw-cut Pendleton remnants and the braided leather aprons that her mother hand sews and assembles with waxed Irish linen thread. Each piece calls for days of cutting and stitching to model modern silhouettes with timeless materials. “I’ve long collected vintage and antique objects, but things that had/have a use or purpose,” she says. “I like the idea that something is worn and has patina— that it has survived and is still of use.” ●

also count as friends and artistic co-collaborators. Kozlowski’s latest exhibition, “Making Music”— a photographic legacy of his musical friendships— is presently on view at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club. The material is a fitting tribute to the artist’s compulsion to capture the moment. Kozlowski works in a variety of media including infrared black-and-white—a signature technique that gives his work a timeless feel. His images are striking for their intimacy and dignity. Subjects include Ravi Shankar, Jackson Browne, Jeff Bridges, Norah Jones, Glenn Phillips, T. Bone Burnett, and Leonard Cohen. There are also portraits of Sarah Lee Guthrie, Johnny Irion, and other members of the Santa Barbara-based band, U.S. Elevator, of which he is a member. “I’m honored to be a part of the wonderful music culture of Santa Barbara,” says Kozlowski, whose collection of vintage guitars has inspired innumerable evenings of spontaneous musical collaboration in his living room. Kozlowski takes pleasure and wonder at his life’s many strange and fascinating journeys. And yet, at 69, he still seems eager to learn. “I had some deep experiences that opened my being up to the fact there’s more here than meets the eye,” he says. “That is my path. As Buckminster Fuller, who is one of my inspirations, once said, ‘You can never learn less, you can only learn more.’” ●

I wanted to create a welcoming portal of endless possibility that was both positive and optimistic. I wanted to make the building melt away,” says the longtime local artist and professor who has maintained his studio in the neighborhood since 1991. “The Funk Zone used to be lonely and now it’s become a fun area and a hub for showing and making work.” The Funk Zone Art Walk is a bimonthly Friday event that highlights the area’s vibrant artistic community. Spend your evening embracing the scene when more than a dozen artists open their doors to the public from 5 to 8 pm. 205 Santa Barbara St., Ste. C., Santa Barbara, 805-965-7321.
