T
his is my 20th anniversary of running Santa Barbara Magazine, and it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. This town is the jewel in the crown of California, a state that I love so much I started a magazine about it—C California Style & Culture. But before I started that publication in 2005, my first “crush” was Santa Barbara, and this magazine is my first “child.” I always thought that every issue should be a love letter to the town I was lucky enough to be raised in, and, hopefully, you’ve felt that over the years when reading through the pages. Speaking of years, time has a way of passing in a blink of an eye, and when thinking about this 20-year milestone, we realized it was time for a bit of freshening up—design wise. With a top-notch editorial team that has been in place here for more than a decade, and one of the best creative directors, James Timmins, overseeing the redesign, I knew now was the time to implement changes. With that in mind, you will see a more contemporary design that mixes the modern with a nod to the historical codes of Santa Barbara itself. What better place to celebrate the old and the new than the reopened Rosewood Miramar Beach hotel? Started in 1876, it was a beachside retreat full of legends and lore. Rick Caruso is the new owner, and he has brought it back to life in a newly reimagined way. It’s a perfect backdrop to shoot our summer fashion and cover story, which stars one of the most beautiful women in the world (inside and out)—OG Supermodel
Elaine Irwin (“In Elaine’s Lane,” page 90). When she needs a Santa Barbara fix, it is there that she retreats to. We captured the essence of the escape in this season’s sartorial resort essentials. And with the idea that what is old is new again, we also spotlight the sport of drag racing, a time-honored tradition in these parts. Vintage vehicles plus the vibrant next generation of fans makes for a fascinating mix. Photographer Dewey Nicks’s portfolio (“Start your Engines,” page 102) is an homage to the different cultures that come together on our seaside strip of Cabrillo Boulevard to celebrate their common connection. Heads up—the youthful crew of locals features upcoming star Brooke Baldwin, who joins the list of famous family members with nostalgic California ties as the daughter of Chynna Phillips and Billy Baldwin, and of course, the granddaughter of “California Dreamin’” icons Michelle and John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas. Commonalities in our devotion to this place—with its stunning scenery and unparalleled lifestyle—is really what we are celebrating within this issue and every issue for the last 44 years. We continue to present the best in Santa Barbara’s culture, philanthropy, food, wine, sport, design, and style the way only an insider can report it. While we evolve, we honor the traditions of the past while being careful not to get stuck living in it. Santa Barbara is in the middle of its own renaissance, and we are just so grateful to be the original magazine reporting and celebrating it all—be it from the most beautiful of vantage points, the American Riviera. Happy summer and happy reading…

J I L L J O H NS ON “So many of my favorite things culminated to make this shoot especially fun—the youthful, summertime energy the models exude, the beach, the classic hot rods, and being able to pull from my nearby boutique, Loveworn,” says the local creative who pulled together looks for “Start Your Engines” (page 102). “And watching Dewey Nicks at work was like magic.” S.B. MUST DOS Running in the morning along the coast, pier, and through the harbor. • Cioppino at Brophy Bros. • A day off at Butterfly Beach or Padaro Lane is heaven.

MARK CHAMPION “It was exciting to be asked to shoot the cover story of the newly redesigned Santa Barbara Magazine,” says the Los Angeles-based photographer who captured Elaine Irwin’s spirit for “In Elaine’s Lane” (page 90). “Getting the chance to work with an industry icon such as Elaine was such a privilege—she was so lovely to work with. Of course I was also working with my favorite team, so it was a fun and relaxed day.” S.B. MUST DOS Stop by Lilly’s for tacos. • Spend time at any of the beaches. • Wander State Street.
DEW EY NICKS “Dream team creative James O’Mahoney and Gina Tolleson always know the best way to spend the day in Santa Barbara,” says the based photographer of “Start Your Engines” (page 102). “This was a true ‘locals only’ shoot—the models, stylist, designer, and makeup artist all live in Santa Barbara.” S.B. MUST DOS Having Kirk Miller of Miller’s Oath bespoke menswear fit me with a new suit. • The Liquor & Wine Grotto in Montecito has a great selection and knowledgeable staff. • Walking the low tide beach on Loon’s Point.
J AMES O’ MAHONEY “It was an honor to be part of recreating vintage drag racing at its birthplace—it brought that drop of oil in my blood to the top,” says the historian who contributed memorabilia and knowledge to “Start Your Engines” (page 102). “Santa Barbara is loaded with auto racing history and should take a loud bow annually.” S.B. MUST DOS “Hora Feliz” at the waterfront with my wife. • Surfing and skateboarding across the street. • Monday night with the crew—beer, blues, BBQ, and billiards. 42 s u m m e r 2 0 1 9

ALISON E D M ON D “What a gorgeous day at the Miramar with the ever beautiful Elaine Irwin, who is always a dream to work with and makes all of our jobs so easy,” says the Los Angeles-based stylist who dressed the model for “In Elaine’s Lane” (page 90). “We laughed from dawn till dusk.” S.B. MUST DOS You can find the best Indian food in California at Bibi Ji, which, coming from a Brit, is truly high praise. • I love getting the train from L.A. to Santa Barbara— beautiful views all the way. • The Ojai Valley Inn is my favorite weekend getaway—time stands still there.

ith a ceiling two stories high and what Wallace Piatt calls “Gucci/ grit style—wood and pipes up above, high-end below”—the RODEO OF THE ARTS gallery offers the perfect showcase for the artist’s monumental canvases, which he brings to life with blatantly bright colors, bold graphics, and modern minimal settings. Along with the Western portraits are cartoon characters and homages to
Andy Warhol soup cans. Piatt and his business partner, Jill Johnson, already owned Loveworn next door, which they’ve filled with vintage denim and other handpainted garb. When their surfboard-shaping neighbors moved out, Piatt creatively embraced the space. “I want people to come in and hang out,” he says, “to see art and not be afraid of it.” 11 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara, 805-636-5611. “My goal was to create the best country club in the world,” said Ty Warner, whose MONTECITO COUNTRY CLUB has reopened after a three-year, $75 million renovation that imbued the 101-yearold property with new elegance as well as luxe high-tech features. Rare Persian carpets cover the oak floors of the great room, which is lit by crystal chandeliers. There’s state-of-the-art technology in the fitness center, movie theater, and bowling alley; chef Jamie West’s Mediterranean cuisine in the grill; and a new ocean-view pool complex as well as sports and tennis courts. p erfectly gorgeous chocolate cake, a lemon bundt, a seasonal galette…a glance at the pastry case at MERCI MONTECITO is enough to make dessert lovers swoon. But there’s more: Pastry chef and food editor Elizabeth Colling began with a tiny, oh, so popular pop-up at the Montecito Country Mart and soon moved into permanent digs there for breakfast and beverages. She has now expanded the stylish cafe’s hours to accommodate lunch and early dinner. The new menu includes fresh soups, salads, terrines, and plates served with Instagram-worthy flair. “I liked the idea of farmers market food,” she says, “clean, beautiful, with a European twist—and to go. I want this to be a place for the community, and I hope a lot of people visiting will also find us.” 1028 Coast Village Rd., Montecito, 805-2200877, mercimontecito.com. J.T.

C
reated from their experience with their daughter Gwendolyn—a tenacious little girl born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) who was never satisfied sitting on the sidelines—Bill and Victoria Strong founded the GWENDOLYN STRONG FOUNDATION in 2009 to fund SMA research after being told there was no treatment and no cure. (Gwendolyn passed away from the disease at age 7 in 2015.) After helping to discover a treatment and cure for SMA, they have continued to focus on building what does not exist—in this case, a playground all children can enjoy. Projected to open in 2021, Gwendolyn’s Playground will be located across from the Santa Barbara Zoo at Dwight Murphy Field. In addition to the playground, there will also be a new tournament

soccer field, baseball field, walking paths, a Kindness Garden and picnic area, sidewalks, bathrooms, and more. “We view the entire project as one entity and are helping to raise money for the entire space but have committed to fully fund the playground that has an estimated budget of $4 million,” says Victoria. “We've received nothing but positive feedback, but many funders still don't know this is happening and may not know that inclusive play is missing from our community.” The history of the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation has always been to fill in the voids, so building what does not yet exist is a natural fit,” continues Victoria, “especially because Gwendolyn was such an ambassador in bringing together children of all abilities and bonding in the universal joys of childhood fun.” Thegsf.com. uman nature is basically the theme of all of my work,” says artist BARBARA PARMET, which makes sense when you consider she started as a photojournalist in her native Missouri. Newspaper work brought her (permanently) to Santa Barbara in 1979, but, ultimately, she concluded journalism “couldn’t go deep enough for what I wanted to do or say.” But photography remains at the core of Parmet’s work to this day. She’s a fearless explorer and true autodidact. Parmet has worked with pin-hole cameras, vintage large-format cameras, and the latest in digital technology. She’s adept at layering images, and her work can appear haunting and mysterious. Her insatiable curiosity mandates that her methodology will never be static. As she says, “I can’t do the same thing over again, technically.” Her most recent work—a piece featuring 47 cyanotypes (a photographic printing process that produces cyan-blue images) sewn together depicting a nearly life-sized image of a dragon tree (Dracaena draco) from West Alameda Park— is on display at the Arts Fund Gallery through July 5. Parmet’s art resides in private collections, the Westmont College Art Collection, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Barbaraparmet .com. L.D. PORTER

Earthly Delights The Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1495-1505)— Hieronymus Bosch’s iconic triptych depicting cavorting humans, exotic creatures, and oversize fruit—has amazed and amused viewers for centuries. Contemporary artist ROBERTO BENAVIDEZ has turned his admiration for the medieval masterpiece into sculpture: lifesize paper piñatas based on Bosch’s fantastical animals. His first museum show—at UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum from July 13 through September 1—features more than 20 of these exquisite creations. Originally from Texas, where piñatas were a part of his youth, Benavidez identifies with the art form’s origin. “The piñata’s history is very multicultural,” he has says. “In my mind, it’s a reflection of me.” Robertobenavidez.com. Culture
The work of Santa Barbara artist PENELOPE GOTTLIEB combines a colorful visual punch with a powerful message about the precarious state of Mother Earth. For several years, she has been “invading” ornithological prints by American naturalist John James Audubon, adding hand-painted invasive plants and other symbols of endangered flora and fauna, thereby interjecting her contemporary views on the state of nature and creating an important dialogue surrounding our planet’s uncertain future. Gottlieb recently completed a large mural at UC Santa Barbara’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum depicting extinct plants, including a now-vanished plant from the nearby Channel Islands. The public is invited to attend the mural’s formal unveiling on August 8 at 5:30 pm. Long represented by blue chip gallery Heather James Fine Art (which recently opened a location in Montecito), Gottlieb’s work is widely collected and exhibited. Penelopegottlieb.com. L.D.P.

hose outside the architecture world may be surprised to learn that UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum boasts the largest collection of architecture drawings in North America. That’s something SILVIA PEREA, the newly appointed curator of the museum’s architecture and design collection, would like the rest of the world to know. “One of the priorities I have is to grow not only our holdings but our accessibility,” she says. “We have an extra-large collection for such a small museum.” To that end, Perea is helping the museum develop and build a new Collection Preservation and Research Center aided by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. She’s also committed to growing the collection based on a new understanding of architecture as a very broad practice. “That means we’re interested in collecting industrial design and different expressions of engineering, among others,” she says. Perea is certainly suited for these tasks. Armed with an architecture degree and a PhD from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (where she grew up), Perea completed postgraduate degree work at Columbia and Harvard, speaks four languages (French, Portuguese, English, and Spanish), and has curated dozens of exhibitions and contributed many essays to leading architecture journals. For her first exhibition (running from July 13 through September 1; the opening reception is July 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm), Perea has invited local artist Mary Heebner to feature her work with selections from the museum’s architecture collection, and asked local architect Jeff Shelton to pair his work with holdings from the museum’s fine art collection. 805-893-2951, museum.ucsb.edu. est friends Mark Wain and Gary Chau have fulfilled their childhood dream by opening up a new neighborhood coffee shop CAFFE LUXXE, 310-3942222, caffeluxxe.com, at the Montecito Country Mart. Their passion for European blends, cafe culture, and the art of coffee preparation have inspired the duo to share their love of Italy with the Santa Barbara community. Isla Vista’s favorite coffee shop for the past 14 years, CAJÉ, 805-699-5033, caje.coffee, is now making its mark downtown at The Mill. Owner Ryan Patronyk reveals that Cajé’s eco-friendly spot (the company does not offer single-use cups but rather reusable mugs that are reimbursed for upon return) is now providing customers with a bespoke experience by offering a hidden bar as well as an innovative menu of drinks presented and assembled in a style similar to craft cocktails. HANDLEBAR COFFEE ROASTERS, 719-2013931, handlebarcoffee.com, focuses on roasting some of the best beans each morning, providing customers with steamy concoctions as well as a plethora of pastries to go with the brews. The new independent LIGHTHOUSE COFFEE, 805770-3911, lighthouse-coffee-coffee-shop.business .site, has given the Mesa a serious upgrade. laine Irwin first visited Santa Barbara in the 1990s. This was back in the day, the superstar model recalls, “when we did these long photo shoots. I stayed here for about three weeks, and since then, I’ve always had a great place in my heart for Santa Barbara.” That was also in the era when models— as opposed to celebrities—still regularly graced the cover of Vogue magazine. In 1989 and 1990, Irwin garnered three solo covers, her first one shot by the legendary Irving Penn, proclaiming the then-19-year-old Pennsylvania-born beauty “All-American!” Within three years, the 5’11” model, who went on to become the face of Almay and Ralph Lauren, married singer John Mellencamp and moved to the heartland, living in Bloomington, Indiana, for more than a decade and a half. Today, she’s a Californian through and through. “I’m the biggest fan of California,” says Irwin, who lives in Venice with her husband of seven years, media entrepreneur Jay Penske (owner of Variety, WWD, and Rolling Stone) and their 6-year-old daughter. “The quality of life is so good,” she says, adding, “I do not miss scraping ice from my windows—just to think of it makes me shudder.” Among her favorite places to visit is Santa Barbara. “It’s such a beautiful town,” says Irwin, who recently celebrated Mother’s Day with her mother and her daughter at the Rosewood Miramar Beach. Her daughter loves exploring the children’s science discovery center MOXI, visiting the zoo, and walking on the pier. “Santa Barbara is just far enough away from Los Angeles that you feel you’ve really gotten away.” Her local friend circle includes jewelry designer Sheryl Lowe, who recently shot Irwin for a fall ad for her collection. Why she chose her for her Santa Barbara-based line? “Elaine is the epitome of a timeless beauty in every way. She is a role-model mother, wife, and friend,” Lowe says. Her biggest focus is striking the right balance as a mother. Taking a break from social media since last December has helped immensely. “I have so much more time with my day. It’s very liberating,” says Irwin, who has two sons from her first marriage—25-year-old Hud Mellencamp lives in L.A. and works for a video technology company; 24-year-old Speck just graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. Meanwhile, her daughter just graduated from kindergarten. “I had no idea how much fun it would be to have a girl,” says Irwin. “It’s good to have things that you do outside of your home, and it’s good to have a lot of investment in how you raise your kids. I’m really trying to spend time and enjoy my little one. I love that part of my life.” •

hat’s important for me is to share Mike’s sense of wonder and joy,” says filmmaker Mimi deGruy about her documentary Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy. “I want people to be able to access that wonder and joy in themselves.” For some of us in Santa Barbara, the world crumbled in February 2012 when Mike deGruy—renowned underwater summer2019

“To deep dive into the oceans and into our own personal relationships requires courage and faith. It’s important to do that before it’s too late.” (much of it shot by deGruy himself), and it also succeeds as a touching personal reminiscence and as an understated but effective environmental manifesto.” After Santa Barbara and Montecito’s last turbulent year, I was inspired by Mimi’s buoyancy, and I strongly felt that her film would be the perfect way to start this past year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Mike deGruy had been the person who had encouraged me to take the reins of our film festival. A Montecito resident, Mike had told me that we needed to make arts education the heart of the festival’s vision, and he pioneered Field Trip to the Movies, where more than 4,000 students from Title 1 schools attend master classes on filmmaking at the Arlington Theatre. The way Mike influenced me is not unique. He affected everyone he met. At first glance, Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy is the portrait of an incredible man—his legacy as an artist and storyteller, and his inspirational mission for protecting the oceans. Yet what I find most compelling is Mimi deGruy’s trajectory. She has found in her pain a way to dig into her husband’s work, into their shared memories, and into their personal relationship to create an artistic testament to the power of resilience, passion, stubbornness, and fearlessness. “To deep dive into the oceans and into our own personal relationships requires courage and faith,” Mimi reflects. “It’s important to do that before it’s too late.” Mimi’s film about her husband is emblematic of our town’s journey—a phoenix rising from the ashes. •

lexandra Vorbeck loves transforming properties as much as—maybe even more than—I do. She is always looking for another challenge. When she found this beach house property north of Los Angeles, she could not resist. The entire property was in very sad shape. The county had recently condemned the house—relocated from Carpinteria in the 1960s—which had been built on sand without any footings or

foundations and added on to haphazardly over the years. The existing gardens included only one semi-functional outdoor space, a pagoda. A sunken pond occupied the actual sweet spot for commanding the view, a long vista to one of California’s great surf breaks. But the location— just a short walk from the beachfront, and next to a tidal lagoon—was perfection. Vorbeck imagined turning it into her own private Idaho of a retreat to share with family and friends: the ultimate, California-casual getaway, suited to a dress code of T-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops. To be here is to want to interact with the water, air, and views, day and night, from all points on the property. To make that possible we used materials that bring the feeling of the

shore right up to the threshold of the house and visually extend the experience of the living spaces to the beach and water beyond. In order to give direction to the large gestures and small details of our redesign, I developed a story of a tsunami landing on the house. When it passed, it left the house engulfed in an almost accidental landscape of randomly scattered boulders (in a practical touch, these serve as impromptu seating), drifts of sand, and an assemblage of boardwalks that tie the house and gardens together. Working with architect CJ Poane, we opened up the interior of the house with axial views, focal points, and moments that reflect the ocean, and we planked the walls and ceilings (picking up the boardwalk theme) to create easy, breezy, light-filled rooms visibly in synch with the surroundings. Beyond the walls, we casually integrated environments conducive to lounging, casual dining, conversation, and just hanging out—a fire pit, an easy area for four to six to share a meal, play cards, or shuck oysters; a larger lounge area for bigger groups, plus, of course, the numerous boulders that offer incidental places to sit or put down a drink. Since we wanted a random effect, it did not make sense to plot every single plant and every single position obsessively. We knew the plant palette had to consist of droughttolerant salt-lovers native to California. We knew we would create an arbor of fig trees off Vorbeck's master bedroom and find a worthy specimen—which turned out to be a strawberry guava—to commemorate the birth of her first granddaughter. I sketched in the boardwalks with a can of spray paint. We figured out the basic structure for the landscape. With four large trees—including a spectacular, mature Monterey cypress—still standing proud, we began to shape our vision with the understory, arranging Metrosideros to grow into a handclipped screen around the property’s perimeter. Interspersed are 15 additional Monterey cypress trees intended to add, eventually, impressive tall shafts of green. While the house and garden were still in construction, Vorbeck held a “naming” party to select a moniker for the house. The unanimous favorite? The Sandbox. We have now guided The Sandbox through the process of becoming for more than five years. As it continues to mature over the next 30 or 40 years, my hope is that it will be demonstrated that we’ve planned well for its future—and that, with care, it will only continue to grow more and more into its best self. •

TOP TO BOTTOM: The house accent color was to mimic the ocean color on a slightly hazy morning. The gravel driveway helps reflect the casual nature the client wanted for this special beach house; a tree trunk was used as the coffee table, and boulders were positioned in such a way to provide random seating in the front garden.
