FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
When springtime hits in Santa Barbara, it’s just another reason to get outside and enjoy all this amazing place has to offer. The flowers are perfuming the air, the sun sets just a little bit later, and the ocean seems to glisten more this time of year. Spoiled with perfection 365 days a year, it isn’t that we have suffered through the long, dark winter to get to this point, but it is just something in the light that makes this season even more special. In this issue, we celebrate life in the great outdoors…or more specifically, stories that are set alfresco. When actress Camilla Belle needs to escape the grind of life in Hollywood, Santa Barbara is on her list of getaways. For our cover story, “Spring Showdown” (page 96), she hopped in a vintage Mercedes and drove up the coast to the Bacara Resort & Spa for a weekend of relaxation. In-demand Italian fashion photographer Riccardo Vimercati flew in from New York to capture her carefree excursion, complete with fluid suiting and ohso-perfect spring ensembles for life on the American Riviera. Artists Daniel and Beth Kuttner—including matriarch/grand dame Beatrix Ost (who is revered for her inspiring couture style)—invited us into their creative workshop/ greenhouse commune at the Dos Pueblos Orchid Farm (“Finding Neverland,” page 106). Famed photographer and Carpinteria’s own Dewey Nicks takes us inside their organic paradise with his gorgeous and lush portraits and lets us wander around a day in their off-thegrid lives. Follow us down the rabbit hole into their eccentric and whimsical world. Speaking of journeys, yoga master Indra Devi (“Hollywood’s Yogi,” page 116) was a woman ahead of her time in the 1950s. Think Lotusland’s Ganna Walska of yoga—Devi traveled the world spreading her love of the practice. With Tinseltown celebs and others following her eventually to Ojai to study with her, she was a legendary guru of sorts. Over the years, Santa Barbara Magazine has looked back at interesting characters and stories in our collective history, and Devi is definitely a chapter not to be missed. But Ojai isn’t only about yogis, it’s a magical place that people have been flocking to for decades for a slice of serenity and a place to call home. Such was the siren call for the design world darlings Steve and Brooke Giannetti and their house, Patina Farm (“Farm to Stable,” page 122). That a coffee table book just on their house alone is debuting this spring speaks volumes on the uniqueness of their abode. They open their doors and invite us into nirvana. Inside or out, this place we call home is unrivaled in its perfection. Celebrate the spring season but also celebrate life renewed in our fabled slice of paradise.

“As a kid, I used to create zines with a photocopier and tape, so you could say I’ve come a long way—and thankfully, so has my methodology. After two years on the editorial team, it’s been a fun transition into the art department,” says Santa Barbara Magazine’s newly appointed art production manager. “I am excited to continue to contribute to a publication with a reputation for being so beautiful. And living where we do, inspiration is all around!” S.B. MUST DOs I spend quite a bit of time at the Santa Barbara Wine Collective. • Rummaging through old canvases and postcards at Art From Scrap. • The Thursday special at Empty Bowl.
Ashley Nelsen
“I feel so grateful to be working with such an incredible, creative team,” says Santa Barbara Magazine’s new editorial assistant. “I am enamored by life in Santa Barbara and am excited to be a part of honoring the many different aspects that make this city so special.” S.B. MUST DOs Picnic on the beach at Hammonds. • Visiting the hot springs for a soak under the stars. • Camping at the Channel Islands.
Dewey Nicks
“One of the nicest compliments I’ve ever gotten was from the gorgeous Beatrix Ost, who called me ‘The Professor of Kindness’ after we shot this story,” says the photographer who captured the Kuttner clan for “Finding Neverland” (page 106). “I want to repay the compliment to the entire family—they were incredibly gracious and generous with their time.” S.B. MUST DOs Lance Kronberg’s boot camp at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. • The skinny onion rings at Sly’s. • Bespoke tailoring at Miller’s Oath.
Erin Taylor Shadi Beccai Riccardo Vimercati
“Being a New York City-based photographer, it’s amazing to spend time in sunny Santa Barbara, especially in the winter,” says Vimercati, who shot “Spring Showdown” (page 96). “I loved being on set with the Santa Barbara Magazine crew and Camilla Belle. She is such a talented and beautiful actress, and she really contributed to make this shoot so fun and successful.” S.B. MUST DOs Walking on the beautiful beaches. • Jogging at sunset. • Montecito for a nice dinner.
“Santa Barbara always reminds me how lucky I am to call California home—particularly when I can call the Bacara Resort & Spa or the Dos Pueblos Orchid Farm my office for the day,” says the locally based stylist who lent her taste to “Spring Showdown” (page 96) and “Finding Neverland” (page 106). “It was fantastic to work with Riccardo Vimercati for the first time on the shoot with Camilla Belle, always a pleasure to work with Dewey Nicks at the Dos Pueblos Orchid Farm, and meeting Beatrix Ost and her beautiful family was the cherry on top.” S.B. MUST DOs Cocktails at the Imperial. • Sama Sama Kitchen for dinner. • Movies at the Arlington.
“For the Giannettis, Patina Farm was a focused, manifested vision and yet everything about it feels effortless,” says this local interior designer who styled the images shot for “Farm to Stable” (page 122). “There is an abundance of beauty that is uncomplicated, gracious and relaxed. Once you arrive, it is difficult to leave.”As for styling the photo shoot at Kirk Miller’s home for “Bicoastal Bespoke” (page 59), she adds, “The New York-based designer brings his fresh, hip style to S.B. as well as classic, traditional artistry. Not much styling to do in the company of a style guru!” S.B. MUST DOs Sunday bike ride along Mountain Drive. • Pizza Guru delivery to the Mission Rose Garden for an early evening picnic. • Rori’s artisanal ice cream anytime.

Click & Camp With So-Cal’s year-round stints of welcoming weather, the magnetism of the great outdoors can kindle impromptu campouts. Problem is, campgrounds fill up, often months in advance, and the backup “Let’s just go see if a spot has opened up” gets risky for time-crunched weekend warriors. Here to help is HIPCAMP , a Bay Area startup that not only streamlines reservations for traditional campsites but also—through its land-sharing outreach—brings together privately held acreage with nature lovers eager to pay to camp on it. On that front, Hipcamp’s recent inroads include New Cuyama, an otherworldly destination about 40 miles (as the crow flies) from downtown Santa Barbara. “It’s an alternative to the urban life,” says New Cuyama ranch owner and retired firefighter Jim Reveley. “It’s laid-back with big starry skies and awesome views. Once they’ve had a visit, they can’t wait to come back.” With Hipcamp, that return trip is just a few clicks away. K E I T H H A M M

Together, co-owners Adam Poverman and chef Justin West (also owner of the restaurant Julienne) have opened this casual spot to offer classic barbecue for lunch and dinner. Among the menu of flavorful dishes are a tri-tip sandwich with melted cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, and pico de gallo ($16) for lunch on the patio or the salmon with red potato hash brown, sautéed broccoli, and blackberry barbecue sauce ($26) for dinner. The restaurant also offers a variety of craft cocktails as well as local beers from Topa Topa and Pure Order brewing companies. 410 E. Haley St., Santa Barbara, 805-845-3995. Small Wonder Santa Barbara is jumping on the tiny house trend with a handful of postage stamp dwellings popping up. ALEX WYNDHAM has been building small offices, art sheds, and chicken coops around town and was recently commissioned to build this 240-square-foot home for a couple who are being featured this spring on FYI Network’s Tiny House Nation. It took Wyndham 10 days to build the house above, which comes with a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping loft (with a queensize bed), and a living room sporting 12-foot ceilings. “The design challenge was to make this very small thing feel large,” he says, adding that a glass roll-up door enhances that feeling, opening up to the great outdoors. In the vein of children’s horse-themed classics (Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty comes to mind), THE EXTRAORDINARY PONY (Lucky Penny Press, 2015, $14.95, available at amazon.com) is a coming-ofage tale of one young pony’s rocky journey to greatness. Themes of love and selfconfidence are illustrated through the vibrant paintings of first-time author and Santa Ynez-based artist Alana Clumeck. What began as a casual beach game in the late 1980s, SPIKEBALL has emerged as a popular sport recognized on a national level. There have been two annual national Spikeball championships to date, and as it happens, Santa Barbara is home to some of the top players in the nation: Former Westmont baseball players Jarratt Rouse and Devin Matson placed second at the 2015 Spikeball National Championships in Nashville. The game is a cross between volleyball and foursquare—teams of two pass a softballsized ball between partners before “spiking” it into a three-foot-wide round net. Santa Barbara City Schools Celebrate 150 Years
As luck would have it, the founding of the Santa Barbara public school system was delayed by drought. The year was 1866, according to historian Robert Nelson Christian, when gangs ran around the backcountry. Newspapers cried out for public schools while taxpayers cried foul, and disputes raged about what language—English or Spanish— would be taught. But it was a severe two-year drought that almost destroyed the local economy. One report even called Santa Barbara “a fossil town covered in tiles.” And though the city had hosted what is now the state of California’s second public school in 1795, education got little attention until the rains finally came. Soon school bells rang out and 243 kids enrolled in the new public school district. Today, there more than 15,500 students. The 150-year anniversary takes place on June 6 and Barbara Keyani, coordinator of administrative services and communication for Santa Barbara City Schools, is planning a number of events to celebrate. Keyani’s office is already heaped with memorabilia such as old yearbooks and faded photos, offering a trove of riches: Babe Ruth playing baseball at Santa Barbara High in the 1920s, S.B. High’s girls basketball team featuring alum Martha Graham (yes, that Martha Graham), and in the oldest shot—an 1899 photograph—a boy related to Buffalo Bill Cody standing alongside Santa Barbara cultural entrepreneur Rod Lathim’s grandfather.
WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in 1900.
Keyani enjoys enumerating the luminaries schooled here. “Martha Graham, Pearl Chase, John Northrop, Randall Cunningham, and Charles Schwab,” she names. “And those are just from Santa Barbara High.” Others include athlete Karch Kiraly and cultural icons like Edie Sedgwick and Katy Perry. To celebrate the anniversary, the Martha Graham Dancers are coming to town on April 30; plus Keyani has invited the first Latino astronaut José Hernández, who attended UCSB, to speak at La Cumbre Junior High on May 20. “But it’s not just the superstars that we are proud of,” says Keyani. “Our grads include people out in our community and all walks of life. Education has always been a high priority for the community.” Superintendent Dr. David Cash—who is retiring this year after five years at the helm—wholeheartedly shares Keyani’s anniversary enthusiasms, come drought or rain. “It gives us occasion to reflect on the last 150 years and then to reflect on the next 150 years as well,” he says. Sweet SEATS Leave it to Jeff Shelton, the architect behind so many of Santa Barbara’s whimsical buildings, to create a line of eye-catching furniture. He and a handful of local furnishing designers and fabricators came together under the name FIG AVENUE FURNISHINGS to make chairs and other “bottom-friendly furniture” out of steel, custom fabrics, ceramic and cement tile, locally harvested wood, and blown glass. Check the website for new designs and furniture shows or to commission your own custom throne. J.B.K. F I GAV E NUE F UR NI S H I NG S .CO M The ELLIPSE CHAIR ($6,800).
TREASURE HUNT Clare Briglio, owner of KINGS & PRIESTS , has added a private acquisition side to her interior design business. “It essentially means I am on a treasure hunt every day,” she says. Scouting local charity shops, auctions, and vintage markets for her savvy collectors, Briglio aims to highlight her clients’ own stories and heritage with hard-to-find pieces. For this space pictured below, she channeled one client’s Middle Eastern and European history through global treasures including George Smith sofas and kilim chairs (handcrafted in England), leather-bound books, antique Syrian trays, Moroccan vases, vintage Ethiopian Coptic crosses, and a few African indigo pillows from Kings & Priests’ own line. “Being an artist, I think we eat with our eyes as well as our other senses,” says photographer Leela Cyd, who illustrates that concept with style in her new, mouth-wateringly beautiful cookbook, FOOD WITH FRIENDS: THE ART OF SIMPLE GATHERINGS (Clarkson Potter, $25, available at Chaucer’s Bookstore, 805-682-6787, chaucersbooks.com). The Santa Barbara native is known for her food, lifestyle, and travel images that have appeared in this magazine as well as Bon Appetit and Food & Wine, among many other publications. But she also had been a personal chef and a longtime blogger for The Kitchn when she envisioned a project that would combine her talents: She could prepare the food, take the photos, and share the stories behind dishes she loved. The 85 recipes, all vegetarian, are divided into five sections that highlight casual meals and entertaining—Breakfast and Brunch, Teatime, Potluck and Picnics, Cocktail Hour, and Tiny Takeaways. “This is how I cook and eat,” says Cyd. “I make something simple and have friends and family over. These are easy recipes, but they have something special.” For example, she points Clockwise from top: A lemon-strawberry tart; FOOD WITH FRIENDS ; SAVORY TARTINES topped
with chèvre and radishes; raclette and asparagus; tomato; and a SWEET TOAST spread with
wheat germ, bee pollen, and honey.
to a basic sugar cookie where the addition of a pressed edible flower makes it beautiful as well as delicious. “It becomes a jewel.” Growing up in Santa Barbara has influenced both Cyd’s palate and her palette. “It’s a given that you’re cooking seasonally and with natural and fresh ingredients,” she says. Her love of color and texture becomes obvious in recipes such as Spring Green Couscous Cups. “Israeli couscous is larger with a great texture and a pearl-like bite,” says Cyd. Add kale pesto, tempered with cheese, nuts, olive oil, and a little basil, and “visually, it’s green madness!” The Beet-Pickled Eggs on the book’s cover, edged with a startling fuchsia, are another example of a dish with eye-popping appeal and unexpected flavors. And her favorite recipe? Cyd thinks for a moment, then decides on Think Pink Faloodas, her version of an Indian dessert. “It’s like a boba [bubble tea] gone crazy,” she says. “It’s food that makes you feel like a kid. How could you not smile?” ● S A N TA B A R B A R A

Fill a medium pot with water and salt and bring to a boil. Add couscous and boil until al dente, about seven minutes. Add peas and cook for one minute longer. Drain couscous and peas in a colander and run under cold water to stop the cooking process. Transfer couscous and peas to a medium bowl. Add pistachios, scallions, and one-half cup of pesto and toss until the couscous is well coated. In a small bowl, toss together lettuce, two teaspoons of lemon juice, and olive oil. Add remaining four teaspoons lemon juice to couscous mixture and taste to adjust for seasoning, adding more salt and pepper. To assemble, arrange a handful of lettuce in each serving bowl. Place one-half cup of couscous mixture in each bowl atop lettuce. Finish with a tablespoon of pesto in each, and serve with lemon wedges and Parmesan. Serves four.

In a food processor, combine kale, garlic, pistachios, basil, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper to taste on high speed until the mixture is smooth. Add Parmesan and blend until fully incorporated. Add more salt and pepper to taste. Place in a small bowl, cover the top with a thin layer of olive oil, seal, and refrigerate for up to five days. This pesto freezes well in small containers or plastic bags, and it keeps for up to one month. Makes 1 ¾ cups.

Fusion Food
After more than two decades in the restaurant business in Santa Barbara—as manager for 19 years at the now-defunct but beloved Sojourner Cafe before purchasing Aldo’s on State Street in 2011—Brad Sherman and his wife, Aparna (a private chef who specializes in Ayurvedic cooking), recently purchased and renovated the old Blue Agave interiors and menu to open NECTAR EATERY & LOUNGE. “After concluding that we were changing Blue Agave to a new concept, we decided to have a menu with flavors from around the world,” says Indian-born Aparna of the restaurant, which serves consulting chef Mattias Blom’s multiethnic-inspired dishes—from ceviche tacos with curry slaw ($9) to pork belly pot stickers with kimchi, tamari, and Chinese black beans ($14). Stop by for a happy hour (5 to 6 pm daily) cocktail—pomegranate-ginger margarita, yum!—or try the Meatless Mondays specials, Tequila Tuesdays tastings, and more. 20 E. TOMA RESTAURANT & BAR
owner Tom Dolan loves taking walking vacations throughout Europe. “There’s an incredible network of trails that connect beautiful villages,” he says. But his long-distance treks—exploratory weeklong travels on foot during which he covers 20 miles a day—have taken special meaning ever since he opened Toma in 2013. Last year, Dolan walked 120 miles across Barolo, in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. He started in truffle-laden Alba and visited tiny historic towns such as Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d’Alba before giving his soles a rest in Dogliani. “We were walking through forests and vineyards most of the day—and you meet people you just wouldn’t if you were driving,” says Dolan. “It’s extremely hospitable. The only danger you encounter is overeating and overdrinking.” That’s what the nights are about— slow, multicourse meals and mingling with locals. But the days, aside from taking in the sweeping vistas, are about discovering wine. Dolan meets with artisanal winemakers—some by appointment, some by chance—and sips through their wares with the goal of finding special bottles to bring home. After last year’s Barolo trip, Dolan added nine boutique wineries to his wine list. Names such as Damilano, Vietti, Sandrone, Rinaldi, and Pio Cesare. “They’re rare labels or special blends that you might not see anywhere else,” he says. For Toma, Italy is the obvious focus for the carefully edited wine list. Umbria and Chianti have been covered, and Veneto is a possibility for 2016. Says Dolan: “I’m excited to discover the topography and vineyards of northeastern Italy—the white wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the red blends of Veneto.” 324

Dexterous DUO
Santa Barbara artists are clearly on the art world’s radar right now. Case in point: Husband-and-wife duo HANNAH VAINSTEIN , hannahvainstein.com, and NATHAN HAYDEN , nathan-hayden.com, recently had solo shows in Los Angeles that opened on the same day. Hayden’s exhibition, “Pure Pretty Fever” at CB1 Gallery, cb1gallery.com, featured the artist’s earth pigment paintings on industrial felt depicting hallucinatory landscapes that oscillate between abstraction and figurative representation; large geometric ceramics—iconic in their own right—evoking the felt landscapes in three dimensions; and, as a visual dialogue between the works, a site-specific wall drawing in black ink. Vainstein’s installation of paintings, weavings, and ceramics entitled “Plant Animal Mineral” at Tiger Strikes Asteroid, tigerstrikesasteroid.com, focused on the “haptic gesture” (the sense of touch experienced while manipulating materials) involved in creating those objects. Vainstein also helms the Lower Lodge, thelowerlodge.com, an artist salon/studio/boutique, and authors Squeeze Magazine, centered on the art of bathing and body rituals. L . D . P O R T E R

Like Proust’s madeleine, LESLIE LEWIS SIGLER ’s exquisite oil paintings of silver cutlery and tableware have been known to spontaneously evoke strong memories. “After the painting’s finished and I’m showing it,” says the Santa Barbara artist, “I really love eavesdropping and listening to people’s memories because they’ll say things like, ‘Oh I had that spoon growing up and I ate with it every day at my grandmother’s house.’” A friend’s tarnished tea service was the artist’s initial inspiration; these days, Sigler receives frequent commissions to portray silver family heirlooms. Armed with a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, Sigler is fluent in old master techniques that contribute an opulent luster to her contemporary take on classical portraiture. Represented by galleries in New York (George Billis Gallery) and Massachusetts (Jane Deering Gallery), Sigler’s work has been included in several Santa Barbara exhibitions, including Sullivan Goss’s annual group show, “100 Grand.” L . After nearly a decade as the exclusive concert promoter of the SANTA BARBARA BOWL , Nederlander Concerts has been replaced this season by Goldenvoice—the bowl’s previous promoter from 1995 to 2001. The change comes in conjunction with longtime talent buyer Moss Jacobs’s return to Goldenvoice as senior vice president. Now that the $40 million renovation on the historic venue is complete—and with the new partnership with the AEG Live Company (creator of Coachella and Stagecoach)—concertgoers can anticipate an impressive and diverse lineup this year. 1122 N.

U.S. ELEVATOR , the Santa Barbara-based band spear-
headed by Johnny Irion, released their self-titled debut album last November. Well known for the folk music he makes with partner and wife Sarah Lee Guthrie (daughter of Arlo and granddaughter of Woody), Irion’s latest venture is unquestionably rock. After meeting filmmaker, cinematographer, and photographer Alan Kozlowski—who provided the 24-track Studer A80 recorder that makes the bands heavily ’60s-influenced sound possible—and the addition of bassist Nate Modisette, drummer Erich Riedl, guitarist Anders Bergstrom, pianist Brett Long, and producer Tim Bluhm, the group began playing together in the spring of 2014, and last February recorded in Modisette’s cabin in Mission Hills. The exploratory album, which is bookended with instrumental pieces named for the Montecito coffee spot Pierre Lafond, was written and recorded live without headphones. Local speaker giant Sonos also played a role lining the house with speakers for recording and sponsoring an album launch party at Soho. C . B . U S E L E VATO R .NE T

Part-time Montecito resident Kia McInerny’s recently released BOND HUNTER (Size Four Publishing, available on amazon. com) is a thrilling novel about a young lawyer in danger after she discovers Hitler’s financial ties to the United States. “My interest in the German bonds arose out of a lawsuit. My husband introduced me to a sophisticated investor who collected them,” says McInerny, a former attorney whose fascination with the history led to the idea for the novel. “In researching Bond Hunter, I traveled to Basel, Frankfurt, and New York and reviewed the opinions of experts on Germany’s foreign debt of the 1930s.” Meet the author at a book signing at Tecolote Book Shop, 805-969-4977, tecolote bookshop.com, on April 16 at 3:00 pm. KNOWN FOR HER strikingly exotic features and sophisticated style, Belle has been lauded as one of Vogue’s best dressed. A familiar star in the front row at many fashion shows and events, Belle has been the face of Vera Wang as well as Miu Miu’s campaigns. TUDO BEM? Born in California, Camilla (pronounced “Ca-MEE-la”) speaks several languages fluently, including Spanish and Portuguese. Her mother hails from São Paulo, and Brazil embraces the young actress as one of its own. SB FACT 101 “I was in the music video for Enrique Iglesias’s ‘Heart Attack,’ which was shot in Santa Barbara. We spent the whole day on an abandoned bridge near Hollister Ranch with a gorgeous view of the coast,” she says. “It was such a cinematic location.” With the combination of the young Latin duo’s popularity, the video has had more than 47,000,000 (yes, million) views. WATCH FOR HER next feature film, Sundown (opening May 1). ●

WHO’S THAT GIRL? Internationally known actress Camilla Belle started her career at the tender age of 9 months old, attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London as a teenager, and has worked with directors such as Steven Spielberg (The Lost World: Jurassic Park ) and actresses Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock (Practical Magic).

“Who would have thought that this big-city boy’s paradise was nestled on a private orchid farm between an aquaponic and Moringa tree operation?” recalls Munich-born, Manhattan-raised artisan and filmmaker Daniel Kuttner. “I remember driving up to the greenhouse for the very first time. I felt I had arrived as an artist. Your art is not defined by your space, but your space can define your art.” Daniel marks the moment just over a year ago when he stood looking at broken panes of glass dangling from the steel rafters, weeds five feet high, and he became fixated on its potential. “High ceilings made of glass mean a limitless connection to the universe above. Feet firmly planted in the soil, it grounded me in a stance of balance. The view of the vast ocean gave me hope for future generations. I called Beth, ‘Honey, you

Beatrix Ost. A painter, author, designer, and style icon, Ost has cast her spell from galleries to galas from Europe, New York, and Tokyo back to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she lives in an avant-garde, art-filled Colonial farm, and now is adding Santa Barbara to her kaleidoscope. Ost, clad in her signature eclectic couture, visits often, no doubt inspiring her granddaughters’ own unconventional style—Luna’s roller derby goth, and Viva’s effortless ’70s skater girl nonchalance. “Beth and Daniel have found their paradise by the sea,” says Ost. “It is a magical place to create whatever you choose to do. A village for friends to gather and professionals to share their talents. Just to be there recharges your energy.” ●

need to come see this, now!’” For Beth Kuttner, a Santa Barbara native who left as a teenager in the 1980s to model around the world, this was music to her homesick ears. “I remember my youth in the ’70s—it was wild and free. There were no restrictions. I rode my bike everywhere. I never worried about food, water, or sunscreen. Fun under the sun and not a care in the world,” Beth recalls. So when she laid her eyes on the DON’T MISS The next abandoned glasshouses for HOMESPUN ARTISAN SHOWlease at the Dos Pueblos OrCASE on Saturday, April 23, from chid Farm, she fell into tears. 11 am to 5 pm at THE ORCHID , “The greenhouse represents 301 La Casa Grande Cir., Goleta. the wild abandonment and freedom of my youth for my children. It’s a slice of untouched California coastline, which is disappearing or inaccessible. It’s a place lost in time,” says the mother of two. Add an outdoor half-pipe and indoor skate ramps for daughters Viva, 15, and Luna, 13— both devout vegans—and that “put us over the edge,” says Daniel. “This is our family’s happy place.” The 50-acre oceanfront greenhouse commune, Dos Pueblos Orchid Farm, is on the historic Rancho Dos Pueblos purchased in the early 1950s by oil tycoon Sam Mosher. With a background in the cut-flower business, Mosher’s Dos Pueblos Orchid Company was the largest orchid producer in the world during the 1950s and 1960s with some two million plants and 22 acres of greenhouses lavishly landscaped with fountains, pools, fields of birds of paradise, and lavender—even a collection of exotic animals—and was known to host some bohemian and bacchanalian dinner parties in its heyday. Now the withered and wild property known as The Orchid has attracted the Kuttners and an assortment of other artisans, organic farmers, and craftsmen who have set up shop and work studios in its former cymbidium chapels of light. “I’m an artist who makes tables. I’m a tischler,” says Daniel. “In Germany, there is a distinction between a carpenter and a table maker. The tischler only makes tables. A table is the central platform of any home or communal space. It is the well of creativity from which energy spreads out and brings people together and makes them communicate.” Beth shared their wares (she creates found driftwood and succulent planters) to the local community recently by creating a biannual Homespun craft fair in the greenhouse last December. “Workshops are a way to connect people and share this otherworldly space,” she says. Daniel inherited his talent and unbridled creative expression innately. Enter the extraordinary matriarch,

DEVI’S EPIC LIFE has been recently detailed in the biography by Michelle Goldberg titled Goddess Pose: The Audacious Life of Indra Devi, the Woman Who Helped Bring Yoga to the W est (Knopf, 2015). Devi was born into an aristocratic Russian family as Eugenie Peterson. Soon, Russia was r ocked by political turbulence and the teenage Devi joined a traveling cabaret troupe and fled the country . She developed a deep inter est in philosophy, joined the nascent “spiritualist” movement of Madame Blavatsky and the Theosophists, then eventually traveled to India, wher e she acted in silent films and mingled with Jiddu Krishnamurti, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi. The Western spiritual seeker who travels to India is something of a cliché. But, as Goldber g points out, it wasn’t when Devi did it. She was an original, and her contemporaries thought she was unusual to say the least. Devi persuaded a reluctant yoga master to train her in the secr ets of his art and became the trusted confidante of several famous gur us, crossing paths with John Lennon and Yoko Ono along the way. She moved to Shanghai, where, during World War II, she taught yoga in a bungalow owned by Madame Chiang Kai-shek. Forced to flee political instability in China, she decamped to Hollywood, where her coterie of devotees

In July 1993, Suza Francina, a yoga instructor and former mayor of Ojai, sat down with Indra Devi, the woman who is perhaps most responsible for introducing yoga to the West. “She was this total free spirit, an international citizen,” says Francina, who had taken classes from Devi in the 1970s at Ojai’s World University. “When you spoke with her, it was so inspiring— you could connect with her sense of freedom. And she gave you the confidence to carry it out.” At the advanced age of 94, Devi was a legendary figure—not only for having popularized the tradi tional Indian practice, but also for her extraor dinary and adventurous life, which had spanned continents and brought her in contact with artists, thought leaders, and politicians fr om around the world. In the interview—which was published in two parts in the Ojai Valley Voice—Devi held forth on yoga and philosophy, recalled her extensive travels, and firmly reiterated her strong belief in women’s rights. Another Ojai resident, yoga instructor Elizabeth Cleveland, describes her participation in one of Devi’s courses as “beautiful, amazing, an incredible experience that changed my life. She really opened me up, not only to the importance of the br eath, but also the spiritual side of yoga.” Per haps more than any other Western individual, Devi is responsible for the ubiquity of yoga today. But anyone acquainted with this r emarkable woman knows that her influence on the world stage went so much further than that.

included Greta Garbo, Aldous Huxley, first Bond girl Linda Christian, and Gloria Swanson. From there, Devi introduced yoga to heiresses and business leaders at Elizabeth Arden’s spa r etreats in Arizona and Maine. At the behest of Rancho La Puerta founders Deborah and Edmund Szekely, she opened a teachertraining yoga school in Mexico to meet the gr owing American demand. She intr oduced the practice to Kremlin leaders and lived for a time in Saigon, Sri Lanka, and Panama, where she served as the “spiritual advisor” to a colonel who plotted to overthrow military dictator Manuel Noriega. In her eighth decade, she moved again, this time to Buenos Aires for an adoring Argentinian rock star. She delivered impassioned speeches to packed audiences then crowd-surfed among her fans. She died in Argentina at age 102. While she is best known as an emissary of yoga, perhaps Devi’s gr eatest talent was for r einvention. “She had so many identities,” Goldber g writes. “Again and again, she would build a life for herself and then discard it when it no longer suited her, moving on with no discernible effort or regret.” It would be natural for Santa Barbarans to won der: Did Devi encounter that other mitteleur opean adventuress, Madame Ganna Walska? After years of living in the suburbs of Santa Monica, Brooke and Steve Giannetti—a decorator and architect respectively whose client roster includes Jennifer Garner, Goldie Hawn, and Halle Berry—decided to fulfill their lifelong dream of building a farm. They wanted to create their idyllic, rural retreat, write about it, and show their kids that it was possible to achieve lofty ambitions. Setting off in search of land in the right kind of town, yet close enough to Los Angeles, Steve said it felt like “all roads were pointing to Ojai.” With Ojai’s natural palette of peaceful pastels to draw from and plenty of room to house their 24 animals, Patina Farm was born. Having already coauthored Patina Style five years back, the Giannettis had no trouble dubbing their new home and book Patina Farm (both published by Gibbs Smith). Early on, the couple started hitting swap meets and flea markets and would put all their treasures on the table to find out what they had in common. “It was very she likes/he likes,” Steve says, recalling everything from old leather books to industrial antiques. “One thing we shared was patina— that worn, aged, real quality.” “Natural materials age and get more beautiful,” adds Brooke. “Like worn leather jackets and boots, there’s a history of the item, something to it, and we like to build houses with that same appeal.” Patina Farm is full of aged-looking details, many of which are inspired by Ojai’s old farm buildings. The reclaimed red roof tiles are from France, and old stone and indoor/outdoor plaster looks like the new home has been there for a century. Raw wooden doors were left natural and all the cabinetry is bleached white oak. What imagery that wasn’t culled from Ojai’s surroundings was inspired by a trip to Belgium a few years ago, and the couple wanted to recreate what they saw there: clean plaster walls, antique doors, and a mix of ancient and contemporary elements. “When you put modern and old together, suddenly you have a new thing,” says Steve. To juxtapose the Old World look, they chose glass and steel doors to bring pull in that modern element along with plenty of natural light. Metal roofs were used on the farmhouse structures, giving an interesting edge and opposition to the red tiled roofs. Inside, very little paint was used, keeping the “modeled looking” drywall compound’s texture raw and exposed. With neutral tones throughout, there wasn’t a lot of room for pattern play; however, they paneled a trifold screen in watercoloresque Gracie floral wallpaper both to act as a focal
SB_MAG_Giannetti House_01.indd 132
point in the living room and to hide the TV. The farm kitchen’s warm accents range from an indoor fireplace to hanging copper pots, creating the spot everyone wants to connect in. The master bedroom has an enclosed garden off the bathroom and a large, relaxing dressing area, which the couple admits is necessary for catching up while getting ready before running off to their busy schedules.
“O n e t h i n g we shared was patina—that worn, aged, real quality.” But their favorite rooms in the house? Their own offices. “I have the best view of the valley in the house, plus I can look down at the donkeys,” Steve says. “And I’m close to the animals in my office,” Brooke adds. “The goats sleep on the porch, and I can see the chicken coop and the rose garden.” Their book takes readers through each space— from the exquisite powder rooms and kitchen corners to the romantic fire pit with faux bois chairs. Between the trellises, vines, roses, and roaming farm animals, the Giannettis’ oasis is easy to fall in love with. And each pink Ojai sunset reminds them how happy they are to fulfill their dream and be in a house inspired by the town’s magical hues. ●

A Midsummer Night’s DREAM
Last August, Lenna Harris and Gabriel Lockwood emerged from the woods to the meadow at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve for their magical summer nuptials. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Gabriel circled the globe visiting 20 countries and learning five languages for 11 years until he returned home in 2008 and met Lenna through a mutual friend. Five years later, he proposed on the summit of Mt. Conness, near Yosemite. After their heartfelt wedding ceremony—with words from John Muir as well as Hawaiian, Polish, Cherokee, and Jewish blessings—130 guests dined alfresco on Santa Maria-style barbecue beneath gold-tipped feathers swaying in the summer breeze. Later, the party moved to the historic barn for dancing under the full moon, craft cocktails, photo booth pictures, and carrot cake cupcakes made by the bride’s sister. The couple’s nine-day honeymoon was spent traversing the Sierras from west to east. “I wanted our wedding to represent a mix of our cultures, so it was a blend of Old World Italian elegance and Santa Barbara’s lovely outdoor lifestyle,” says Santa Barbara native Katja Decker-Sadowski, who exchanged vows with Pietro Amirkhanian at her parents’ home on the Riviera, where Pietro had proposed during a sunset toast in front of both of their families. Surrounded by epic city and ocean views, the backyard ceremony took place among 175 guests, followed by a Seasons Catering Italian feast of local fresh fish, gnocchi in a Meyer lemon sauce, and orange-marinated flank steak. The reception continued into the wee hours of the morning with a dance party on the illuminated plexiglass-covered swimming pool. Following the celebration, the newlyweds embarked on a monthlong honeymoon to India and the Maldives. A S H L E Y N E L S E N

“We dated on and off for almost 10 years before we got married,” says Brook Barman of her courtship with Bradley Simpson. “We both went off to grad school, broke up, and got back together a million times, and somewhere in the middle, grew up and fell in love for real.” The wedding was held at the Black Walnut Ranch in Ojai, and other than the festive Mexican feast, Jenn Sanchez Design flowers, and Wildhagen Photography, every detail was specially prepared by the bride, groom, and their family and friends. “We did everything ourselves—
the cakes, decorations, table numbers, chandeliers in the barn rafters, music—it was all done by friends and family,” says Barman. “It was a perfect tour de force of DIY spirit, and that’s what made it so special.” Under a reclaimed wood altar made by the groom’s mother, the ceremony celebrated the power of ritual with an old Irish handfasting, wine in cups handcrafted by the groom’s sister, and a poetry reading by a close friend. After the wedding, the couple relaxed on the Ojai ranch for a few days before honeymooning in Sayulita, Mexico. A.N.

Love STORY
Erika Kloumann and Gene Montesano exchanged vows at their Montecito estate about five years after their first date at an Old Spanish Days Fiesta party Gene held in that very spot. Gene proposed with an exquisite heart-shaped diamond ring from Gaspar Jewelers on Christmas Eve as they sat under the tree. “He said he had a little something he wanted me to open that night,” says Erika. The open-air ceremony took place before 175 guests amid a verdant landscape of flowers and masses of vines cascading over a vintage arbor. Afterward, cocktails were served in the citrus orchard before an exceptional multicourse traditional Italian feast. After dinner, guests entered a small, white cottage set up as a charming Italian pasticceria (“pastry shop”) filled with elaborate desserts, including fresh gelato from the groom’s company Black Market. Gene’s 1959 Triumph TR3 car was adorned with masses of flowers and a hand-painted Just Married sign, a perfect touch to a spectacularly idyllic celebration before the couple departed for their honeymoon to their home in East Hampton with their 3-year-old son, Lucca. With the desire to create a bridal line with the best stones available, Daniel Gibbings collaborated with Forevermark to create THE DANIEL GIBBINGS FOR FOREVERMARK BRIDAL COLLECTION —about a dozen pieces available in both 18-karat yellow gold and platinum. “For many years, I was on a quest to find the right diamonds to inspire me to create a bridal line. When I came across a Forevermark diamond, I knew I had arrived at the right destination,” says Gibbings of the rings and bands handcrafted in Santa Barbara. With 125 years of diamond expertise, Forevermark (owned by De Beers) promises beauty, rarity (less than 1 percent of the world’s diamonds can become Forevermark), and responsible sourcing from select mines to maintain rigorous environmental standards. “I wanted a line that would reflect the elegance, boldness, and uniqueness that is in all of our designs but that would also stand the test of time,” says Gibbings. “We call it ‘extraordinary meets the out of the ordinary’—it’s a perfect collaboration between what both companies offer.” 1143 Coast Village Rd., Montecito, 877-565-1284. “Santa Barbara is where we fell in love, so it was a no-brainer as to where we wanted to celebrate our wedding,” says Megan Macias of her marriage to her husband, Bobby, at the private estate Villa della Famiglia in Hope Ranch. “The property has an Italian family feel that is hard to describe—it’s simply magical.” After the ceremony, to complement the venue’s vibe, Via Maestra 42 served a variety of house-made pasta dishes followed by a four-tier floral-embellished cake by Frost It Cakery. After planning her own wedding (along with day-of help from an Ann Johnson Events coordinator), Megan got the urge to start FESTIVE EVENT PLANNING . “My passion for DIY creations, fashion,
and art as well as my love for working with people and the enjoyment I found in planning my own wedding made me want to launch my own company,” says Megan. While her primary inspiration stems from her clients, she describes her personal aesthetic as “exuding colorful, eclectic, nature-inspired designs with a timeless, romantic edge.” A . N . With more than 10 years of experience planning everything from birthday soirees and corporate holiday parties to weddings and parties for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, it’s no wonder Jill Remy branched off on her own in 2013 to start JILL & CO. An air of romance hovers over the FOUR SEASONS PUNTA MITA , on a spectacular peninsula on Mexico’s west coast. With 173 rooms and suites furnished in shades of the sun, sea, and sand, the resort’s beachside ambience seems to inspire a sensual languor in everyone. Honeymooners, however, will find Punta Mita particularly attuned to a romantic getaway, with activities tailored especially for them. For example, they can savor a private sunset dinner for two on the Rock, a natural promontory overlooking the Pacific, with a dedicated waiter at their service. Or a couple’s delights at the Apuane Spa might range from treatments poolside or in a tropical garden setting to a scrub, wrap, facial, and warm stone massage capped off with champagne and chocolate fondue. Sometimes it’s an urban vibe that fulfills honeymoon fantasies. Surely the art deco-inspired decor of THE BEAUMONT , in London’s stylish Mayfair district, will do just that. Established a little over a year ago by noted restaurateurs Jeremy King and Chris Corbin, the hotel occupies a protected, gorgeously renovated and redecorated 1926 building on a garden square near art galleries, exclusive shops, and Hyde Park. Original art and antiques furnish the elegantly pale 73 rooms and suites, all with sleek marble bathrooms. The Old World ambience extends to the grand yet comfortable public spaces and, especially, the restaurants. The wood and leather Cub Room is an intimate residents’ lounge that welcomes hotel guests from early until late for all-day snacks or quiet cocktails. Diners can enjoy more formal meals in The Colony, a classic grill with vivid 1920s-style murals of sporting venues on the walls, while the American Bar is a sophisticated take on the legendary bars of the Roaring Twenties, complete with photographic portraits of notable British and American figures who frequented Mayfair in that era. For honeymooning guests who seek special pampering or relaxation, there’s the Hamam and Spa, inspired by a great Turkish bath in Pall Mall. And when the couple is ready to set out and explore the city, The Beaumont has a vintage Daimler waiting. Rates: From

Trips for TWO For 26 years, Steven Shulem has been helping travelers plan great trips. “My specialty is cruises,” says the president of Santa Barbara-based STRICTLY VACATIONS, “but we do everything. I’ve been to all seven continents and every five-star hotel. I love talking to people about what’s good and what’s not.” That includes guiding honeymooners on their postwedding getaways, which have taken a new twist in recent years: “It used to be that people would get married on a Saturday and then relax on a beach in Hawaii or the Caribbean for a few days or a week,” he says. “Now honeymoons are way more exotic, longer, and more adventurous. Folks want things that are more exciting!” Popular destinations include India, Bhutan, and the Seychelles, where you can cruise on a 26-person yacht that has its own two-person submarine for undersea excursions. Also cool are new five-star all-inclusives, particularly on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. “Thailand is very romantic,” Shulem adds. “You could go to a beach for a few days, then to the north, and on to the craziness of Bangkok.” In general, “there’s more choice of upscale properties in exotic places. Vietnam and Cambodia used to be rugged two-star getaways. Now there are amazing hotels.”

Big BANG The SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY celebrated its centennial year in interstellar style at the Big Bang Birthday Bash. This extraspecial gala raised more than $496,000 to benefit the museum’s science and nature education programs for children. Amid dark decor meant to represent space before the Big Bang, more than 300 guests dined on dishes such as Chicxulub crater scallops and danced to the cosmic croonings of The Platinum Groove. Museum president and CEO Luke Swetland discussed the commitment to serving the community for another 100 years of discovery. encouraged Walska to purchase the 37-acre estate in Montecito that became Lotusland, traveled in many of the same circles. Swept up in the then-fashionable movement for Eastern-oriented self-exploration, Bernard opened a yoga teaching center in 1939 and published his experiences in magazines and books soon after. Devi published her own books on yoga in 1948 and 1953. Walska hosted one of Devi’s most famous pupils, Gloria Swanson, at Lotusland on several occasions. By the time Francina sat down with Devi for the interview for the Ojai Valley Voice, Devi’s physical and mental acuity were powerful testaments to her practice. Well into her 90s, she remained passionately engaged with the world. Photos that accompany the interview show a gray-haired, supple-bodied woman, her face enlivened by humor and curiosity. “When people ask, ‘When will you retire?,’ I say, ‘I don’t know. I am busier now than ever,’” Devi told Francina. “Just a few days ago, I was interviewed for the newspaper, the radio, and the television—all at the same time. The radio man asked, ‘How does it feel— aging?’ I said, ‘I don’t know how it feels…ask someone who’s aging.’” ●

A view of Prince Island off the
Collectively known as the Channel Islands, Anacapa, San Clemente, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Barbara, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa were explored and lived on by indigenous people dating back 13,000 years. In the new documentary West of the West: Tales from California’s Channel Islands, filmmakers Peter Seaman, Sam Tyler, and Brent Sumner follow the points of view of those who have journeyed to and experienced firsthand the magnificent isles. The three-part series includes 14 tales encompassing the islands’ histories—from the early Spanish voyages and settlements to the return of the Chumash people in the 1970s. Presented by the Santa Cruz Island Foundation and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, the documentary airs this April on PBS and is being distributed to schools across California. BIN NGUYEN
