AGING IN HIGH HEELS

I

t all started on a friend’s chartered yacht in the Greek islands. I had stabbing pains in my stomach, sharp and quick. When I returned home, I went to the doctor. The X-ray showed a large mass, leading to a battery of tests. The outcome was the worst possible diagnosis: stage IV, inoperable, metastasized, uteral stromal sarcoma. The prognosis: two months to live, leaving me in total shock.

I wanted other opinions. I had lost my grandmother, mother, and two sisters to cancer, so I was devastated. My family had already set up other doctors’ appointments for second opinions, so off we went as a pack. It was during this time I decided I had to bring everything I had to the disease. After all, the doctor had hundreds of patients; I only had one, myself. I went to a nutritionist, an acupuncturist. I visualized, I meditated.

I believed I needed to take control of my life. Three doctors agreed with the first, suggesting an extreme course of chemotherapy, and then a resection of my stomach and then more chemotherapy. They wanted to start in two days. My life would have been over as I knew it.

The last two doctors (thank God) came up with an experimental treatment for my hormone-driven cancer: hormone blockers. A shot of Lupron (customarily used to treat prostate cancer) was combined with Femara, a pill used to treat breast cancer patients. Dr. Charles Forscher, a wunderkind at Cedar Sinai and Dr. Frederick Eilbur, a crusty genius at UCLA, worked together on my case.

First, they had the treatment approved by the tumor board. Once they did, I started the treatment right away. I’m happy to report it’s been 15 years. They have been the most powerful 15 years of my life. I’ve heard that cancer can be a blessing. In my case, it definitely was. It gave me passion. My passion was

t could be the perfect duet!

The 64-year-old Santa Barbara Symphony and the 23-year-old Opera Santa Barbara [OSB] are in talks to combine their extensive resources, I can exclusively reveal.

This comes after the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1978, performs its farewell concert under veteran director Heiichiro Ohyama at the Lobero on Monday after deciding it was no longer financially viable to continue.

“We are in the very beginning of a conversation,” says symphony executive director Kevin Marvin. “We will see what happens.”

But the opera’s artistic director Kostis Protopapas would seem keen on the idea.

“United we stand, divided we fall,”

he says, “Everyone would seem to benefit by this.”

Former opera president Joan Rutkowski tells me: “For many, many years I have been hoping that there could be a lot more overlap in the arts groups here in Santa Barbara.

In fact, the late Leni Fe Bland and I even seriously thought about all the arts organizations joining under the umbrella of the Granada Theatre. Of course, that hasn’t happened.

“For years, I tried to get the opera and the symphony to use the same orchestra, but that couldn’t happen because of two separate union contracts. At the moment, OSB is going through change, all good really, and maybe now is the time to begin slow-

Creative Art Workshop The Alzheimer’s Association, California Central Chapter’s Fall Art Talks eightweek workshop aims to provide the creative space where people affected with mild memory loss paired with their partners come together to advance memory and communication through participation in art workshops. Art Talks stimulate communication, promotes socialization, and protects against isolation. In the eight-week workshop, participate in workshops specially designed for those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or related dementia and their partners. Let’s Slow It Way Down!

I

n regards to Bob Hazard’s piece about the history and the looming expansion of the 101 through Montecito (Guest Editorial, MJ #23/38), I would like to offer one very simple step we can all take to, at the very least, counter the thru-traffic that is already becoming more and more prevalent in our neighborhood streets: slow down.

If we, as local residents, respect our neighborhoods and all of the life – human and wild – living here by slowing down whenever we drive, we create a place where thru drivers, looking for a faster alternative to the congested 101, can’t speed, thus discouraging them from using Montecito as the alternate 101. Take Jameson Road: it is posted as 40 mph. That is the limit, which doesn’t mean one has to drive 40 mph on that road. If we were to all drive 25, or even 30 mph, on our way home, then those who opted to not jump onto the 101 at Olive Mill, will be forced to drive 25 mph all that way.

Drive 25 mph to the upper village, Knollwood, or wherever you’re headed. As for our local, tree- and hedgelined residential streets, including San Ysidro and Olive Mill, 25 mph or so is perfect. And if there’s a pedestrian, dog, squirrel, bird, or whatever, slow down to 10 mph and give them some space and maybe even a wave.

Just slow down.

Yes, we are all busy and have places to go, but if we allow for that speeding to happen after we exit our cherished neighborhood, we will help preserve its remaining sense of calm. Ten years ago, during the advent of the iPhone, I lived in Palo Alto, a few doors away from Steve Jobs. If anyone was busy, it must have been him. He had a fast car and a busy life, but he never sped through the ‘hood.

Save the speeding for the 101, and keep the thru-drivers none of us like clogging up our streets at bay.

Collectively, creating a critical mass, we can have an impact on, and even control, how outsiders drive through our streets.

A few weeks ago, I encountered one of those would-be speeders in a big Land Cruiser right behind me. The driver seemed to want to either go through me or at least to reduce my gas consumption by pushing me along. He was so close, I thought he’d go up my tailpipe. My reaction? I slowed down to a crawl, further aggravating him, I’m sure. He expressed his frustration by entering the right-hand lane at the roundabout on Hot Springs and cutting across

and in front of another car to head up to the 101 going north. I later saw him on 101 moving furiously between lanes to try to get ahead; at one point we ended up in front of him in the center lane, whereupon I began to slow down again. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our little escapade, though I don’t believe the hotfooted Land Cruiser did. So, we agree with your excellent suggestion of slowing everything down when using Montecito roads. – J.B.)

More Good Traffic Ideas

Yes, I agree, the stretch of Coast Village Road and cars offloading even as far back as Summerland. Do these drivers need an I.Q. test, thinking they going to get along faster by getting off 101? Perhaps we need the old WWII guard gates to check local papers for entrance.

Problem: once these drivers exit, there is no way to get back on until traveling the length of Coast Village Road.

Idea: close CVR freeway off-ramps from 4 to 5 pm, or organize some local patrols or maybe a big sign that says NO THRU TRAFFIC, LOCAL BIZ ONLY. Check out Balboa Island; they solved the problem.

Real solution: forward think and take away the thoroughfare, as the Music Academy did to curtail thru traffic.

If you ask me, Donald J. Trump has, so far, turned the country into a three-ring circus, with his presidency the de facto ringmaster. There’s even been talk of a second Civil War! And if he succeeds in bringing the U.S. more jobs, a financial report I caught this morning said the wages won’t be any higher (God save us!).

Something I find interesting is that people in Montecito and elsewhere are taking big chances expressing their thoughts and opinions using the editorial process.

Under the topic of “Real Americans,” Lidia Zinchenko writes, “...most foreigners have no clear idea about Russia whatsoever.” Using that same logic, I have to question what do Russians really understand about due process and the freedoms protected under our Constitution?

She writes about making America a better place for everyone who has legally earned the “priceless” privilege of living here. There is a price.

For an investment of $500,000 or more, someone can buy a Green Card with full rights of citizenship and the right to call themselves “Real Americans.”

Karen Friedman Montecito (Editor’s note: My understanding of the regulations concerning the $500,000 investment is that a certain number of U.S. jobs have to either be created or saved for that investment to qualify; there are other stipulations as well, but I do not believe anyone in possession of a “Green Card” is allowed to vote, for example, thus excluding them from the “full rights of citizenship.” My wife was a Green Card holder for many years and could not vote, nor could she take advantage of the tax code’s treatment of a surviving spouse if I passed away unexpectedly. She has since become a U.S. citizen and enjoys those full rights of citizenship. She also, by the way, considers herself a “Real American.”

Accident-in-Waiting

Why is the Valley Club unwilling to mitigate the dangerous traffic situation at the intersection of Sheffield Drive and East Valley Road (Highway 192)? Highway 192 has, for many years, been a well-traveled thoroughfare between Ortega Ridge and the upper village, an escape from traffic gridlock on 101.

In recent years, traffic has increased markedly and most notably during times of peak freeway traffic. For a number of years, Valley Club, County

by Empty Bowl Gourmet Noodle Bar have announced they will open following tenant improvements at Coast Village Plaza, 1187 Coast Village Road.

“I’ve been looking to open a place in Montecito for many years, and I’m looking forward to this opportunity,” said Renaud Gonthier, owner of the restaurant and bakery that bears his name. Empty Bowls founder Jerry Lee agrees, calling the location “a perfect spot” to open a Montecito restaurant.

In fewer than 10 years, Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro has become a thriving, award-winning fixture in Santa Barbara, offering “a taste of Paris” with a bakery located within three Gelson’s Markets in California (including Santa Barbara), and two other bistro locations in Santa Barbara: Loreto Plaza and Arlington Plaza, which serve breakfast and lunch. Plaza location will offer an expanded menu that will include dinner service.

Since purchasing Coast Village Plaza in late 2014, Hank Hurst and Rich Rosin of H&R Investments have revitalized the 20,000-sq-ft building with a fresh exterior, expanded patio areas, and a mix of businesses that they believe Montecito residents – such as themselves – will love. After a two-year design and permitting phase, construction began in August 2016 with improvements including installation of a new elevator, doors, decking, dining patios, lighting, sig-

nage, driveway, parking lot, and landscaping. A total renovation of bathrooms and office areas on the lower level has also been completed.

While the contractors have been renovating the site, commercial brokers DeJohn and Steve Hayes of Hayes Commercial Group have also been busy marketing vacant spaces and searching for high-quality tenants. The major renovation of Coast Village Plaza is just about completed, and the new tenant improvements are expected to be completed early next year. “The work is just about done, and the owners’ vision is approaching reality,” Hayes said.

Titled “Paws & Pick Up… Keeping Montecito Beautiful,” the event will feature a dog theme, according to organizer Mindy Denson. Healing the Ocean

Two years ago, in the summer of 2015, we told you about the grand opening of The Gallery Montecito on Coast Village Road. Founders Marjorie Layden and actress Linda Evans envisioned a fine-art locale with compelling exhibitions that would benefit charities. The Gallery has seen different phases under various curators, but the recent metamorphosis has been the most successful by far, under the direction of artist and curator Bobbi Bennett.

After assuming leadership in June, Bennett curated “Splash”, an exhibition that comprises some of the hottest contemporary talent in Southern California. “The goal was to curate a top-notch show, and donate a portion of the profits to a local organization,” said Bennett. The show features Bennett’s own photographic work and spotlights the impressionistic seascapes of fine-art photographer Will Pierce. Also included in The Gallery are the abstract paintings of Rose Masterpol, iconic rock n’ roll photographs of Guy Webster, paintings by Kellie Bolton, sculptures by Kari Hunt, and American Romantic paintings of Tom Mielko. Collectors from New York, Miami, Texas, and across the states, as well as many local residents, have invested in dozens of works, and so far The Gallery has

donated $6,000 to Heal the Ocean, a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit that establishes better infrastructure systems to stop ocean pollution.

“The caliber of talent we have in this show is significant,” said Bennett. “I came on board because I really believe in the mission of The Gallery. Heal the Ocean was the perfect organization to benefit from the ‘Splash’ exhibition, and we are really excited to partner in the work they’re doing to preserve our coast.”

The “Splash” exhibition also includes The Gallery’s Coast Village neighbors, with its first-ever block party. Several nearby businesses donated wall space for more art: Guy Webster’s famed portraits of Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger still hang in Lucky’s Steakhouse, Mielko’s “After the Storm” was on display at Sepi’s, and photographs by Bennett and Pierce adorned the walls at Allora by Laura, Viva Olivia, and Blanka.

Polo & Wine Festival

A new music, wine, and polo event is coming to the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club this Saturday, October 7. Organized by Josh Elion and Joey Massa, the festival is the first of its kind in California, combining polo, local wine, and music for a one-day experience.

“After attending our first polo match last summer, it immediately became clear to us that a combination of polo, wine, and music would create an amazing experience,” Elion told us. “It’s a way of bringing three aspects of a community together and introducing people to the game of polo, new local wineries, or incredible musicians.”

Musicians include Macy Gray, LP, Nick Waterhouse, Durand Jones & The Indications, and Viex Farka Toure, among others. Participating wineries include Happy Canyon Vineyard, Sanford Winery, Standing Sun Winery, Summerland Winery, and August Ridge Vineyard. A portion of the proceeds of the event, which is expected to draw 2,000 people, will go to two nonprofits: Notes for Notes, an organization that designs, equips, and staffs afterschool recording studios within Boys & Girls Clubs; and the Polo Training Center Santa Barbara, which teaches new players the game of polo.

he Legends gala is held every year in the Granada Theatre to honor outstanding legends whose vision and artistry have elevated the performing arts in our community. This year, the philanthropy award went to Anne Towbes and Michael Towbes (in memoriam), the artist award to Marilyn Horne and institution award to The Music Academy of the West.

As event co-chairs Gretchen Lieff and Stephanie Sokolove said, “As we shine the spotlight on extraordinary performers this evening, we remember all those who have shared the stage of the Granada Theatre delighting and thrilling audiences. We invite you to enjoy this special gathering, which is not just unforgettable but truly legendary.”

The awards the honorees are presented with are the letter “G” set in crystal. That original design was by our good friend architect Roger Phillips, who created it during the theater’s restoration to be an accent on top of the box seats. You’ll see it throughout the theater.

We had a little extra excitement since there was a power outage downtown.

Guests gathered in the lobby, where there was still daylight for cocktails and conversation, but if at 6:30 there was no power, we were all to be sent home. They could not have let us into the auditorium by law. Dinner for 250 and entertainment was to be held on the stage. Needless to say, there was a big cheer as the lights finally came on.

Board chair Palmer Jackson joked that master of ceremonies Andrew Firestone had graduated from the Larry Crandell institute with a Ph.D. Palmer reminisced, “I remember coming here when it was a cheesy movie theater.” Marilyn remembered how awful the acoustics were in the old days. Those days are gone forever now that the Granada is a performing

Marquis Family to be Honored at San Marcos High Gala

T

he philanthropic contributions of the Marquis family will be honored at the fourth annual San Marcos High Royal Gala on Friday, October 6, at the Fess Parker Resort.

San Marcos was a recent recipient of the Marquis family’s philanthropy. Thanks to the family, the school’s theater will receive significant sound and light upgrades along with lobby renovations and will be renamed the Marquis Performing Arts Center in an unveiling slated for later this year.

“We saw an opportunity to give back to a place that we have a lot of passion for,” explained Matt Marquis, who has called Montecito home for the past 15 years. He and his wife, Ann, raised their four children – Maddy, Alex, Jane, and Marcus – in Montecito attending Cold Spring School and later San Marcos High.

The Marquis’s connection to San Marcos High spans 35 years and two generations. You could say that the Marquis kids – all nine of them – grew up on the San Marcos stage. Matt is the eldest of five children and he and his siblings – Chad, Chris, Michele, and Adam – were involved in theater, athletics, and student government at San Marcos.

Matt and Ann’s children followed in the family’s footsteps, singing and dancing their way through high school.

Maddy, whose shining moment was as the lead role of Eponine in Les Miserables is now a senior majoring in music at Carnegie Mellon University.

Her brother Alex starred as Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees while younger sister Jane played a supporting role.

All three participated in the highly acclaimed choir programs at San Marcos and Alex was also part of the National Honor Choir throughout his four years. Younger brother Marcus began writing and composing his own

music at the age of 10 and dreams of pursuing a musical career when he’s older.

“San Marcos has had a tremendous impact on our entire family,” said Matt. “We credit our older kids’ passion for music and preparation for college to the school, and in particular the rigor of teacher Carolyn Teraoka-Brady and the performing arts department. San Marcos has one of the best performing and vocal arts programs of any high school, in addition to strong, consistent leadership, excellent teachers, and passionate, involved parents.”

Although the Marquises have gifted San Marcos with their most magnanimous donation to date, they’ve also left an imprint on many other local institutions. Dale Marquis, the patriarch of the family, has served on the board of the Santa Barbara Foundation for many years, and both Matt and Ann volunteered on the Cold Spring School Foundation for more than a decade where Matt also served a four-year term on the board.

Ann recently served as the president of the Santa Barbara Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. where she’s also been a board trustee. She is also a past board member and sustainer of the Junior League of Santa Barbara.

On Entertainment ETC Offers New Take on Husbands and Wives

oody Allen has only ever authorized one of his films to be adapted for the American stage – and that was Bullets Over Broadway, which he wrote himself. So Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC) artistic director Jonathan Fox had low expectations when he had the idea of creating his own version of Husbands and Wives after hearing about one done recently in the Netherlands. “I really didn’t think it would be possible that it would go very far,” Fox recalled.

But lo and behold, Allen’s representatives and the iconic auteur himself approved of Fox’s pitch to transform the film about two couples who, finding themselves questioning their faltering marriages, take divergent paths to confront their differences. Now, Fox’s adaptation of the humor-filled drama that earned Allen an Oscar nomination for his screenplay is kicking off ETC’s new season, opening Saturday, October 7, at the New Vic Theatre, where it will perform through October 22.

Turning the film into a stage play has been full of challenges – not the least of which is that Allen has final approval on everything from the script to the casting to the sets. Fox said. Then there’s the matter of the cinematography, which featured long documentary-style shots and even monologue segments with the characters. Fox’s solution was to employ live video, with a camera operator onstage moving among the actors to capture a variety of angles and viewpoints that will be shown in real time on TV monitors along with the action on stage.

“I had to come up with a stage equivalent of that style,” Fox explained.

“We’re creating our own language with the different perspectives, so the audience is invited into their inner process and can see what’s going on with the characters, even when they’re offstage, and heighten aspects of what they’re going through.”

Fox is handling the four-year span and time jumps in the film by condensing the action into a single year, with changes marked by the seasons, and handling the gaps by emphasizing the pauses as characters transition.

“We have a silence where they deal with what’s being said or what they want to say. It creates its own tension.”

just finally concluding on Monday and Tuesday with Dirty Dancing, the stage musical version of the classic Patrick Swayze/Jennifer Grey coming-of-age movie. The show tells the story of Baby and Johnny, the two fiercely-independent young adults hailing from vastly different worlds who find themselves drawn together at a summer resort in 1963. There are major lessons for both in life as well as dancing in the show that features “Hungry Eyes”, “Hey! Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and, of course, “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”. Show time is 7:30 pm on October 9-10.

comfort and connection offered by a real one. Affairs, fantasies, questions of mortality and “Is that all there is?” arise among the couples.

“I’ve been with someone for 23 years, and we’ve certainly gone through many different phases together. So, I’m not unfamiliar with much of what goes on with these characters,” Fox allowed. “But the themes are universally resonant. In the play, there are different views of what marriage should be. For some, it’s better to stay together even if it’s not ideal, and for others excitement and not settling into a slow-death situation is more important. There’s lust and desire mixed in with the love. But there aren’t any answers, no specific solutions that are right for everyone. It’s a matter of the choices we make.”

Husbands and Wives hits movie screens right around the time Allen was leaving his longtime partner Mia Farrow, who starred as his film wife in the movie, to take up with her adopted daughter – with a storyline in the film not all that different. Allen, who both wrote and directed the film, would deny any notion that the film is autobiographical. But that doesn’t matter, said Fox, who went out of his way in casting to make sure the actors forged their own interpretations separate from the film.

“We’re doing it on stage with a cast that is not his, taking a fresh look at the material,” he said. “I’ve not spoken with him, but he must feel that this story is worth someone else telling it.”

Anyone who thinks that Bill Murray’s upcoming show Friday night at the Granada Theatre is simply a parody by the actor-comedian who first cut his teeth on Saturday Night Live where his Nick the Lounge Singer was an early favorite is in for a rude surprise. Or make that a pleasant one.

Murray has always been something of an enigma even in his early screwball comedies Caddyshack and Stripes, and certainly in more serious later efforts like Lost in Translation and St. Vincent. Now his latest project is New Worlds, an album and tour where he sings classic American songs and reads classic American literature accompanied by a classical trio headed by Jan Vogler, a venerable classical German cellist who won the principal position in the Staatskapelle Dresden at age 20.

The two met by chance four years ago on an airplane when Murray wisecracked about stuffing Vogler’s cello in the overhead compartment. At first, Vogler didn’t recognize Murray.

“I knew he was someone remarkable because he had an aura,” Vogler recalled over the phone from Germany earlier this week. “But it only clicked once we were seated across the aisle from each other and started talking.”

The pair soon forged a fast friendship, and the idea of creating the partnership over words and music took shape when Murray invited Vogler to New York for the annual Poets House walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, where Murray recited Walt Whitman’s poetry. That’s when Vogler proposed the project. “It was actually his idea, but he planted it in my head,” he explained.

The program came about over dinners in New York, when Vogler suggested musical works and Murray brought the literature, which appealed to the cellist who grew up with a vast library of American works at his disposal. The concept was to explore narrative links between the musical selections and unlikely associations.

“We sat around the fireplace and went over everything, trying out different things until it resonated with all of us,” Vogler recalled, referring to his wife, violinist Mira Wang, and friend and pianist Vanessa Perez, who round out the trio.

The album, released last Friday, features such classical pieces as a Bach cello suite intermixed with Murray reading selections from Whitman, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, and Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, among others. Blessing the Boats, by American poet Lucille Clifton, is paired with Saint-Saëns’s The Swan and an excerpt from The Deerslayer

Transportation, and Caltrans have been made aware of an accident in the making. There is a fence located on the southeast corner of Sheffield Drive and Highway 192 that obstructs the ability of vehicles traveling north on Sheffield to see oncoming vehicles on Highway 192 traveling east to west when stopped at the Sheffield stop sign. To see the oncoming traffic requires edging one’s vehicle beyond the white stop line (normally half the length of the car). At that point, one is in the direct line-of-transit of oncoming vehicles on Highway 192 heading west to east. The fence is on Valley Club property. As a result, there are limited options available to the County and to Caltrans to remedy this situation. Caltrans might put in a three-way stop sign but needs evidence that there is truly a problem.

Caltrans objects to a convex mirror on its easement opposite the Sheffield/East Valley Stop sign, since this is not an approved remedy in accordance with traffic management.

Apparently, an accident or accidents are required to trigger a review. The County has no jurisdiction other than considering eminent domain. So, as of this writing, the ability to have a direct line-of-sight to traffic going east to west on Highway 192 when turning left continues to be unresolved, and the Valley Club continues to be intransigent to ameliorating this significant safety issue.

It has been suggested to Valley Club board members to either: 1) Remove the dark green plastic that is braided into the chain-link fence on the Sheffield side and the dense foliage along the fence on the East Valley side, providing a clearer line-of-site for oncoming cars.

Or, if this doesn’t work...

2) Move the current fence line back at the intersection of Sheffield and East Valley Road in such a way that motorists have a clear line-of-sight of traffic driving west, eliminating the need for drivers to cross half-way over the white “stop” line to get an unobstructed view of oncoming traffic.

If the Valley Club continues to be unresponsive to the above suggestions, a third approach would be for the Montecito Association to work with the Montecito Planning Commission, as well as the County through the auspices of First District supervisor Das Williams to impose a hold on any Valley Club proposed development until the issue of the fence is addressed. Is the Valley Club waiting for an accident to occur at the intersection of Sheffield Drive and East Valley, followed by a lawsuit, before it takes any action? Their current lack of response to solving the current situation seems to support

that premise.

Thorn in His Side

I have to respond to your editor’s notes that you put after certain letters appear in your paper.

Firstly, it’s very convenient for you to edit someone’s letter to fit your own narrative.

Secondly, my statements about Diana Thorn taking space in not only yours, but other newspapers (she is a space hog; sorry, that’s a fact): you yourself stated you don’t have rules for this. Well, you should consider it.

Thirdly, Ms Thorn has a propensity for making broad statements that have no factual being. Her DACA letter was a prime example of her irresponsible writing.

Fourthly, this is why I asked her to join the mayor’s race. She seems to have a fix on things. Let her present herself to the public and see if she can come across to people face to face.

I think it’s a different ballgame, but maybe she can pull it off.

New California Laws

Hello, my friends. Here are some of the highlights of the legislative session that just ended:

1) SB-1: increases your gas taxes by approximately 20 cents a gallon (November 1) and your vehicle license fees by an average of $100 (Jan 1).

2) Passed Cap N Tax, which will increase gas 0.63 to 0.93 cents a gallon change and the taxes that go with it; 3) Proposed increase on a new tax every residence will pay for tap water in the state; 4) A $3.46B parks bond to pay for parks in “disadvantaged communities,” meaning Los Angeles. We will get the crumbs. The debt service will be over $200 million a year. The good news is some money goes to help fix the Salton Sea, which should have always been a state responsibility.

5) Law to release any lifer (murder, rape, child molestation, et cetera) who has: a) reached the age of 60 years old; b) already spent 25 years in prison. Charles Manson qualifies today and the Melendez brothers could be released in about 12 years? What about victims?

6) A new $10 charge on all residents living in a mobile home park to address living condition enforcement in those parks; 7) We picked an official dinosaur of the State of California; 8) Blackmail Tesla to either unionize with the United Auto Workers Union or forfeit State incentives to buy their electric cars; 9) Reduce from a felony to a misdemeanor the purposeful intent to transmit the AIDS virus to a unknowing partner; 10) Give preferential treatment to prisoners convicted of serious crimes that are less than 25 years old because their brains are not mature enough to understand right from wrong.

11) A bill to require our true sex be omitted from drivers licenses; 12) Free legal services for illegal immigrants; 13) Establish safe “injection zones” run by government to oversee people injecting heroin.

Enough good news for today. I’ll be back in the future with an update on last-minute legislative surprises.

The Real Vietnam War

With the airing of Ken Burns’s 10-part series, The Vietnam War, drawing to a close, we want to share with you some of our thoughts about our father’s Vietnam policies and strategies that the episodes covering his presidency misrepresented. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who served in the Nixon White House, once memorably observed, “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not

entitled to their own facts.” And that applies even to Ken Burns. So here are some facts: LBJ’s October 31 bombshell announcement gave North Vietnam a major military advantage. And before Johnson left office, the negotiations that South Vietnam joined succeeded only in reaching agreement about the shape of the conference table.

Johnson’s “October Surprise,” just five days before the election, did, however, provide some voters with the false hope of peace, nearly swinging the election to LBJ’s vice president, Hubert Humphrey.

It is not true that President Nixon continued the war for his own political benefit. In fact, there’s no doubt that an immediate withdrawal of our 540,000 troops in Vietnam on the day he took office would have served his immediate political interests. But it also would have dishonored our commitment to the freedom of South Vietnam for which 37,563 Americans had already died. Furthermore, it would have devalued America’s credibility to friend and foe alike, with dire diplomatic and military consequences for Asia and the world.

It is not true that President Nixon widened the war. In fact, North Vietnam’s active military exploitation of Laos and Cambodia had widened the war years earlier. Our father’s bold and entirely justified actions to disrupt the enemy’s ability to wage war against our troops saved countless American lives. So, too, did the 60-day incursion into Cambodia our father ordered on April 30, 1970. This mission destroyed massive amounts of the enemy’s military supplies and disrupted the military sanctuaries that the Communists had been exploiting to kill American and South Vietnamese troops.

Ken Burns incorrectly maintains that President Nixon was, like presidents Kennedy and Johnson, responsible for the war. But it was JFK and LBJ who got us into the war; Richard Nixon got us out. Our father believed, however, that a hasty retreat from Vietnam would have led to a perilous American retreat from the world. Among those who agreed were Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and a majority of the American people.

In 12 televised “Addresses to the Nation” on Vietnam in his first term, Richard Nixon explained to the American people his plan for ending the war. He won the support of the “Silent Majority” of Americans, did what he said he would do, and never lost their support for his policy.

The Nixon “Vietnamization” strategy gave South Vietnam a chance to defend itself against Soviet and Chinese-backed Communist aggression. It also confirmed America’s bipartisan commitment, dating to 5 – 12 October 2017

the Truman administration, to resist Communist expansionism. His willingness to take strong action affirmed that America would keep its word, making possible his historic opening to China and ultimately leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Our father agonized over the war-driven divisions in our country.

He understood that anti-war passions were rooted in frustration with the war’s duration. But he also knew that their dissent made his goal of a lasting peace more difficult to achieve. It saddened him that so many clashed in America’s streets and on college campuses, and it angered him that some treated our troops returning home from the battlefield as pariahs.

President Nixon wound down America’s involvement in Vietnam to give the people of South Vietnam the chance to live in freedom. To suggest that he strung out the war is flatly wrong. To say that the reason for the war was wrong disparages the honorable service of those who fought in Vietnam, America’s most difficult war.

And each of these false contentions dismisses the will of the American people, who re-elected our father with a historic 49-state majority over an opponent who vehemently opposed our father’s Vietnam strategy.

In 1973, as America’s role in the war ended and our prisoners of war came home, Richard Nixon’s vision of a wider, transformative peace was taking hold, a peace that ensured a generation of peace for the American people even as the world’s political order underwent enormous change.

These are the facts. Perhaps if Ken Burns had himself visited the Nixon Library, he might have learned the real history of Vietnam during the Nixon years. Unfortunately, he did not. Fortunately, however, the tens of thousands who come to Yorba Linda – or follow the Richard Nixon Foundation on the web or through social media – will find that the truth resides there for all to see and learn from. And for that fact, we are grateful to all those who support the Richard Nixon Foundation in its mission to promote the legacy of our father, the 37th president of the United States.

Taking a Knee

Take a trip to Valley Forge near Philadelphia in January. Hold a musket ball in your fingers and imagine it piercing your flesh and breaking a bone or two. There won’t be a doctor or trainer to assist you until after the battle. So, wait your turn. Take your cleats and socks off to get a real experience. Then take a knee.

Take a knee at the beach in 5 – 12 October 2017

Normandy where thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the cliffs at dawn into certain death – even as the one in front of them was slaughtered to pieces – the very sea stained with American, Canadian, British, Free French, and Australian blood.

The only blockers most had were the dead bodies in front of them, riddled with bullets from enemy fire.

Take a knee in the sweat-soaked jungles of Vietnam, from Khe Sanh to Saigon. Anywhere will do. Americans died in all those jungles. There was no playbook that told them what was next, but they knew what flag they represented. When they came home, they were spit on, for reasons only cowards know.

Take another knee in the blooddrenched sands of Fallujah in 110-degree heat. Wear your Kevlar helmet and battle dress. Your number won’t be printed on it, unless your number is up. You’ll need to stay hydrated, but there won’t be anyone to squirt Gatorade into your mouth.

You’re on your own.

There are a lot of places to take a knee. Americans have given their lives all over the world. When you use the banner under which they fought as a source for your displeasure, you dishonor the memories of those who bled for the very freedoms you have. That’s what the red stripes mean. It represents the blood of those who spilled a sea of it defending your liberty.

While you’re on your knee, pray for those that came before you, not on a manicured lawn striped and printed with numbers to announce every inch of ground taken, but on nameless hills and bloodied beaches and sweltering forests and bitter cold mountains, every inch marked by an American life lost serving the flag and singing the anthem you protest.

No cheerleaders, no announcers, no coaches, no fans, just American (and Allied) men and women delivering the real fight against those who chose to harm us blazing a path so you would have the right to “take a knee.”

You haven’t a clue what it took others before you to get you to where you are today, but your “protest” is duly noted.

Not only is your “protest” disgraceful to a nation of real heroes, it serves the purpose of focusing on your boorishness, callousness, disloyalty (not to mention inconsiderateness, rudeness, and thoughtlessness), and your narcissistic ingratitude for those who chose to defend you under that banner that will still wave – and anthem that will still be sung – long after your jersey (not your number) is retired.

Making the Funk Zone the Art Zone

Part 1: Art itting on the sidewalk watching public art murals being painted in the Funk Zone [FZ] while interviewing the Arts Fund Santa Barbara [AFSB] executive director Marcello Ricci about the Funk Zone Public Art Program [FZPAP], I sense the positive energy exchanged on the streets as artists do public art cannot be overstated. As an reviewer, I laud it as the first collective large-scale public art in town for its diverse range of art genres selected to mate the building’s specific architecture with professional artists specializing in that genre. One will find pop, folk, figurative, surrealism, abstract, geometric, and contemporary creating a free 24/7 outdoor public art museum, truly a forward vision for public art whose benefits go well beyond the FZ. Commission executive director, and Nancy Gifford, AFSB trustee since 2008, for this interview: Q. What is the history of public art in the FZ? A. Ginny: In 2004, Nils Hammerbeck, Nathan Vonk, Reds business owner Dana Walters, in conjunction with then-County Arts commissioner Patrick Davis, started the Focus on the Funk Zone events, and mapped out a FZ mural program.

The first mural was painted on the side of Reds without prior approval.

The SB Visual Art in Public Places Committee [VAPP] was open to the idea of a FZ mural program. There was not enough support to make it happen. In 2009, the property owner at the corner of Mason and Helena streets gave Laura Inks permission to replace broken windows with art panels, which uplifted the soon to be demolished area.

Ginny: Fall 2013, the AFSB met with City staff to formulate the language of this program. I represented support from the City’s Arts Advisory and Visual Art in Public Places committees. A program was outlined whereby the Architectural Board of Review (ABR) will be presented, for approval, a “Public Art & Mural Program” specifically designed for the Funk Zone.

The board knew it would require us to find funding for the artists, supplies, and our staff.

Regardless, we felt it expanded our mission to support the artists of Santa Barbara County and was critical in helping keep art alive in the FZ. We are pleased that of the dozen projects all but one were SB residents. Even more interesting is that only one artist had ever done anything at that scale.

known as the Funk Zone, and as such the ABR would approve the program in total without needing to have each arts installation come before them individually for fees and approval.

Art location changes will be submitted to the Arts Advisory group for consent approval. The goal would be to save the arts from disappearing in the Funk Zone, which within the current laborious review process, is bound to happen. The program received unanimous approval by ABR on April 28, 2014. The first public art installation was 2015.

Marcello: In December 2014, I was curating a street art show at Gone Gallery and wanted to facilitate some murals in conjunction with it. I heard about a public arts program from then AFSB executive director Kai Tepper.

I called Nils to look into it. We found out it never got final approval. When I became the executive director in 2015, I asked my board if we could take over the public art program and they let me run with it. Being an art nonprofit for 15 years in the FZ, the AFSB has always taken a leadership role, like The Charrette Project 2012 and the Funk Zone Art Walk [May 2014]. My goal with the Public Art Program is to make art accessible to the increasing foot traffic since the galleries and studios don’t always keep regular hours.

Dancing with Sutras

E

ven Lorin Roche – who spent decades dancing with the text known as the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra before publishing his own translations/perspectives on the 112 Sanskrit teachings three years ago as “The Radiance Sutras” – can’t fully explain how the ecstatic depths of human experience are revealed through the work.

“It’s still mysterious to me,” he said the other day. And at any given moment, he said, the relationship changes. “I’m a new person every day. I’m continually rediscovering nuances of meditation. Almost every day I discover something major about meditation that I wouldn’t want to give up.”

The day we talked, for instance, he said he woke up with one of the practices where you have beautiful words resonating in your awareness, No. 109, he said. “Then I meditated with it.

That’s the idea. You pick one or two or three words that sing to you what you love about the universe and hang out with them and let it become a song in your heart.”

The one that has been dancing most in my heart since I first came across the wondrous work last month is No. 106: “Set your mind free to wander anywhere it wants, think any thought, ride any wave, surge in any direction. The instant a thought springs up, abandon it and move on. Don’t let the mind rest anywhere. In this way, gain entry to the bliss of the silent depth beneath the surf.” Reciting it gives me chills running up and down my spine, which Roche said is “a flash of recognition, a moment of being wide open” with the universe.

For the weekend offering, Anuttara Puja: The Sevenfold Prayer as an Ideal Lifestyle, Tsony will lead an exploration of transposing the seven-fold prayer ritual into a secular, yet spiritual, lifestyle. Busy Times at Bodhi Path

Dharma teacher Tsony, the resident instructor at the Bodhi Path Buddhist Center in Natural Bridge, Virginia, is coming to Santa Barbara’s center for a public talk and a weekend program. Tsony completed two traditional three-year retreats under the guidance of the great meditation master Gendun Rinpoche, and later served for 15 years as the Abbot of Kundreul Ling Monastery in France before deciding to focus on nurturing the growing Bodhi Path projects in Europe and the U.S. After leaving the monastic community a decade ago, Tsony has devoted his time to teaching Tibetan Buddhism and meditation practice.

My Favorite Song and Favorite War

H

ere’s a quiz question for you: Can you name a popular song whose lyrics include the words “vauntingly”, “hireling,” and “haughty host”?

If you need a hint: also featured in this work are “the gloom of the grave”, the “pollution” of “foul footsteps”, and “the terror of flight”.

Still stumped? I guess I’ll have to tell you. It’s “The Star Spangled Banner” – a popular song indeed, especially in the United States, where it was written in 1814, and has been the official National Anthem since 1931.

I have never been accused of excessive patriotism, but this song has always been a favorite of mine.

However, of its four stanzas, only the first and the last are, in my opinion, really great. The third stanza, which contains nearly all of the above invective, is, perhaps a little too caught up in the nasty circumstances under which those words were written. The author, a Georgetown lawyer named Francis Scott Key, was obviously seething with anger at the invaders.

Remember that his remarkable act of literary creation occurred during what turned out to be the last great foreign assault upon the American mainland. The invaders were, I regret to say, British, and they had just burned Washington, D.C. Incidentally, my favorite song came out of my favorite War (the War of 1812) – the only one I know of in which, because of slow communications, war was declared (by the U.S.) after the alleged reason for it (certain British “Orders in Council” that interfered with American shipping) had been repealed. And it was the only war whose most important battle (the Battle of New Orleans) was fought (and won by the Americans) two weeks after the war was officially over, and the peace had been signed and sealed (across the ocean, in Ghent.)

(Let me also point out that, compared with the words of at least one other national anthem, ours is meek and mild. The seven stanzas of France’s “La Marseillaise” – which similarly castigates an invading enemy – reek with slaughter – and the tone is set by the chorus, which, loosely translated, speaks of making the enemy’s “impure blood soak our fields.”)

The last stanza of our own anthem, however, has other problems nowadays: for some tastes, it is too belligerent (“Then conquer we must, when 5 – 12 October 2017

our cause it is just.”) For others, it is too religious (“And this be our motto: In God Is Our Trust.”) The national motto, “In God We Trust,” about which there continues to be so much debate, was actually derived from these lines.)

So, it’s usually only the first stanza that we ever sing or hear sung. But that alone is enough, with its thrilling concept of a beautiful embattled flag, under fierce siege, being anxiously watched from a distance all through a long night. (Not till the next stanza do we learn that the flag really has survived into the daylight and is still flying.)

What makes it all moving is how the melody so perfectly fits the spirit of the words, particularly the way it soars when we get to the daunting spectacle of “the rocket’s red glare’” and “the bombs bursting in air.” But here comes the really strange part of the story: that music was not written for those words at all!

The third stanza is too caught up in the nasty circumstances It was written, about 30 years earlier, by John Stafford Smith, an eminent English composer and organist, to go with some frivolous and pedantic verses someone named Ralph Tomlinson had produced to serve as the official song for a London club called the Anacreontic Society, to which both Smith and Tomlinson belonged – a club at whose meetings wine, women, and song were all equally high on the agenda. Tomlinson’s lyrics, entitled “To Anacreon in Heaven”, make a bizarre contrast with our stirring anthem, and I challenge you to look them up and try to sing them.

Although the composer John Stafford Smith lived until 1836, I doubt if he ever received even a note of thanks from Francis Scott Key (who lived until 1843) – let alone any tribute from the American people. But, of course, this isn’t the only case of great music and great words fortuitously and somewhat illicitly – finding each other. Even the Salvation Army used to appropriate popular melodies for its own songs. After all, as its founder, general William Booth, is reputed to have said, “Why should the Devil have all the best tunes?”

Lieff it Alone To quote Dickens, it was the best of times and the worst of times for Montecito international legal eagle and inveterate car collector Robert Lieff.

Robert entered his newly acquired French-made 1963 Facel Vega in the Montecito Motor Classic last week and won the blue ribbon for first place in its post-World War II foreign category.

But while the car was parked, his friend Jim Crook, owner of Milpas Motors, was driving a customer’s 1953 Sunbeam convertible and accidentally dented Robert’s latest pride and joy.

“The Sunbeam didn’t have neutral and jumped into drive, making it leap a couple of feet into Robert’s car,” says Jim. “It was most unfortunate.”

Robert is sanguine about the accident. “Fortunately, no one was injured, but at least 50 people saw it and took photos. I was at the other end of the show and missed hearing or seeing the crash.”

The pricey Facel is now at Winning Makes, a local company that specializes in repairing rare cars.

Green Thumb Montecito sculptor Ruth Green, who has only been sculpting for seven years, has been garnering the accolades, the latest being chosen to exhibit in the National Sculpture Society’s 84th annual award show in Brookgreen Gardens, Pawleys Island, South Carolina, with her bronze Carry On among 47 contemporary exhibits.

“It is the oldest and most prestigious sculpture organization in America, so I couldn’t be more delighted,” says Ruth. “I’m with some of the finest sculptors in the country. Many of their members works grace New York’s Central Park.”

She formerly worked in Sacramento as president of the state board of education. “But I really wanted to use a different part of my brain,” she says.

“It took me a couple of years to find sculpting, but now it is a wonderful

Two Opera Santa Barbara veterans and presidents, Fred Sidon and Duncan Mellichamp, have been made honorary board members in recognition of their extraordinary efforts on behalf of the company.

Current board members gathered at the University Club as they received their bronze medallions from chairman Nancy Golden.

“The company today is in many respects the product of these gentlemen’s vision, passion, energy, and determination to present first-rate opera in Santa Barbara,” she told guests.

Fred was on the board from 2001 to 2008, and president from 2004 to 2008.

Duncan was a director from 2003 to 2014, serving as president from 2009 to 2012.

The opera opens its 24th season with a production of Jules Massenet’s fiveact comic opera Manon on November 3 and 5 at the Granada.

The honorees included the Dream Foundation’s Flower Empower program, the recently opened Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, and Charles Zimmer, an early executive director of hospice.

Happy Trails The lengthy drought last year that played havoc with riding paths in our rarefied enclave has abated, president Bobbi King told me at the Montecito Trails annual fundraiser at the Montecito Valley Ranch.

Thank Hugh Very Much On a personal note, I remember Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who has left us for more heavenly pastures, aged 91.

For some reason, I was invited to the magazine’s 25th anniversary party at the Playboy mansion in Holmby Hills – which he sold for $100 million last year with the proviso he could live there until he passed on – in 1979 and had a most unique evening, ending up in the infamous grotto, which I’ll recount in my memoirs.

Hef, who parlayed a $10,000 investment into a $200-million empire and bought the imposing Charing Cross Road property for $1 million in 1971, was unfailingly charming and surrounded by a bevy of buxom and beautiful bunnies, as the likes of Tony Bennett, James Caan, and Tony Curtis, partied nearby.

He has been buried next to iconic sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, the first Playboy cover girl in 1953, at the Westwood Village Memorial Park, in a crypt he bought for $75,000 in 1992.

The two-and-a-half acre cemetery, just behind a couple of movie theaters off Wilshire Boulevard, is also the final resting place of Truman Capote, James Coburn, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Armand Hammer, Dean Martin, Jack Lemmon, and Burt Lancaster, among many others.

to get to as many cancer patients as I could and tell them not to give up hope.

But funny things happened. As the years went by, I realized I was getting older and applying all the same things I learned from cancer to aging. I could see I needed to bring my best self to the table for aging too, if I was going to age the way I wanted to. I needed to exercise, eat properly, have goals, and a good attitude, everything I learned from cancer. I became just as passionate about aging and spreading the word as I had been about cancer.

site I think is important to have art, so I approach the property owners.

How are the artists selected, and are they paid?

By committee of the AFSB, the property owners, and tenants. They are commissioned, or at the very least, materials are paid for. Any local art professional can submit a proposal.

When I speak at senior centers, I see I’m not alone. Beautiful people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s are going to exercise classes, lectures, drinking wine around the pool. I noticed at each place I went, they all had that wonderful look of being interested and involved. This is not the older generation we once knew. This is indeed the “New Old.” There is no sitting in rocking chairs for this group. They are starting businesses, partnering up, traveling all over the world, and looking for new adventures.

We only have to look around us in Montecito, at our own Leslie RidleyTree at 93, one of our leading philanthropists who drives herself to work... in Burbank. or Fred Klein, also 93, who has his own local TV show, called Literary Gumbo.

I am proud to say I am part of this new groundbreaking generation, and at 83, I feel I still have chapters three, four, and five ahead of me. I never dreamed that I would write three books, professionally speak at places such as the Capitol building, do a TEDx talk on the new aging, and become an advocate in Washington for funding research for aging: and all in my early 80s. Let us not forget the best for last, writing a column for the Montecito Journal!

Yes, we are definitely “the New Old” and I can’t wait to see what else we can do. I want those coming up behind us to look forward to aging, not to be afraid of it. There are so many new adventures to explore and wisdoms to hand down.

So, celebrate your age with strength, glamour, humor, and joy.

Is the art going to change out?

We would love to change out projects every one to two years to keep it fresh and give other artists opportunities. There are 12 sites in the program now and we plan to add more. In time, each existing site can be repainted with permission of the property owner and funds allowing, so we encourage artists to submit proposals.

It involves custom-mapped video projections on a large and interesting building, and inviting both local and international video artists to create custom visual content for it. We are looking to raise $40K. We are having our annual fundraiser at the AFSB on Saturday, October 14, from 2 to 8 pm.

odd choice, Vogler said it’s actually one of his favorite pieces on the project.

“I don’t want to give away too much about the show. But it’s art, it’s theater, it’s music. It expresses a lot of things that you can’t really describe with just words. When he sings ‘Pretty’, I think it’s fantastic. It has a message. Everybody should feel pretty. I’m inspired by his art.”

The album and the show have a very intentional pacing, Vogler said, building from simple selections to something of a crescendo, and even includes Murray dancing.

“Bill has both the gravity and the humor to be really good on stage,” he said. “It’s been really fun to work with him.”

Bittersweet Goodbye: 4Q’s with Violinist

The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra (SBCO) performed regularly in Santa Barbara for 40 years, surviving personnel changes and recessions until troubled finances forced its closure at last spring. On Monday, October 9, the SBCO is returning to the Lobero to celebrate its legacy with a final concert under the baton of music director Heiichiro Ohyama, who has led the ensemble since 1983. Jennifer Frautschi will serve as soloist for Mozart’s Violin Concerto #3, K.216 while the program also includes Mendelssohn’s Symphony #3, Scottish, and will end with Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, serving as a bookend for SBCO’s history, as it was also performed in the first concert in 1978.

Violinist Amy Hershberger, who first played with the SBCO 25 years ago and has served as the concertmaster for the last 15 years, gave us

some final notes on the ensemble’s ending.

Q. What are your thoughts about the demise of the SBCO? A. It’s very sad for us that we’re not continuing, but we have had such a history of incredible performances and amazing artists as guests. We’ve all had so much fun and given our all every single performance, so we can only be proud of everything we’ve done. Heiichiro always had the right approach and we loved playing for him. It’s still not entirely clear what happened.

We just didn’t have enough leadership and fundraising on the business end, I guess. So mostly, we feel very lucky that we’ve had a chance to do this for so long. Still, it’s a big loss for us and also for Santa Barbara. This orchestra always felt like the very height of taste and loveliness and beauty in a city that’s all that. It really suited where it was.

What stands out for you as a favorite moment or two?

It’s hard to pick, but I can say that one composer we got tremendously right is Beethoven. We also played a lot of Schubert, who can be even harder to do, but our interpretations and performances were really incomparable to anything else I’ve been a part of in Los Angeles. I also treasure the chamber music concerts I did with Heiichiro over the years, which were very special.

And so many of the soloists we had were just extraordinary. Having (pianist) Alessio Bax year after year was just amazing, a wonderful combination of the orchestra, the vision, and the soloist that was very rare.

Will there be tears at Monday’s concert finale?

I was worried about that with the last concert last season because I didn’t know we were going to do this one. But it all turned out fine. The emotions will be there, but when we’re playing we have to put them away. At least that’s what I’m trying to do to give the best performance we can. But there’s a lot going on. It’s a big deal.

Any ideas about your future with Heiichiro or the other players?

There are some things being talked about There’s a possibility we’ll come together in some format.

Maybe some miracle can still happen. SBCO as it existed is definitely done, but maybe something new will come out of it.

The episode of the hit NPR radio program From the Top that was taped before a live MAW audience last June at Hahn Hall in and featured Fellows at the Music Academy of the West will air in Southern California on KUSC on Sunday, October 8, at 6 pm. The show, which is hosted by pianist Christopher O’Riley, is already available for streaming and podcast at www.fromthetop.org.

Highlights of the episode include a world premiere of composer Conrad Tao’s “Asymptotes” performed by viola Fellow Erin Pitts, clarinet Fellow Arianna Beyer, and O’Riley, as well as solo piano Fellow Michael Davidman performing the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2 and “Vissi d’arte” from Act II of Puccini’s Tosca.

Instead, the Metro 4 cinema is the new home for the popular hi-def projections of opera straight from New York, which kicks off this Saturday, October 8, at 9:55 am with a new production of Bellini’s Norma. Sondra Radvanovsky stars as the Druid priestess title character, while Joyce DiDonato portrays her friend and rival, Adalgisa, a casting coup for bel canto fans. Tenor Joseph Calleja plays Pollione, Norma’s unfaithful lover, while Carlo Rizzi conducts Sir David McVicar ’s evocative production, which sets the action deep in a Druid forest where nature and ancient ritual rule.

Fiddlin’ in Goleta

Goleta Valley Historical Society will host the 46th annual Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention & Festival at Rancho La Patera & Stow House on Sunday, October 8. The event – founded by bluegrass impresario Peter Feldmann at UCSB back in the early 1970s – hasn’t changed all that much over the decades, though its popularity has added a few features. The centerpiece is still an old-time performing contest, which takes place all day and features competition in categories ranging from banjo, mandolin, and old-time guitar to traditional singing and old-time fiddling, with several levels in many of the sections. The competition is paused around lunchtime for a new feature, a beginning old-time jam hosted by Susan Platz.

Of course, musicians are free to jam as much as they want all around the grounds, a tradition that dates back as far as the festival’s early days.

The performance stage also runs for the full festival and features Kirk Sutphin & Tom Sauber, Spencer & Rains, Clarke Buehling, Hi-O Revelers, and Echo Mountain, and features its own all-star old-time jam to close out the day. Meanwhile, an Instrument “Petting Zoo” offers participants a chance to fiddle around on an acoustic instrument, maybe finding out what it’s like to draw a bow across the strings of a violin or noodle with a five-string banjo or strum a dulcimer.

New this year is an area set aside for small-size instruments that adults and young children can explore together.

Also new for 2017 is a free preview concert the day before the festival. Sutphin, Spencer & Rains, David Bragger & Susan Platz, and others will perform for the 3 to 5 pm event with no distractions to draw attention away from the stage. The California Avocado Festival celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, and now one of California’s largest free music festival is set to enter its fourth decade this weekend in downtown Carpinteria. go on and on. She was a leading lady at the Metropolitan Opera for 26 years and had a 39-year run at the San Francisco Opera. She’s been here on the Music Academy of the West faculty since 1995. She first sang in public at the ripe old age of 2. She studied at USC and here at the Music Academy and has performed in more than 1,300 recitals and made more than 100 recordings. Her future is full of private teaching and master classes throughout the world into the next decade. And besides that, she’s such a sweet and friendly lady.

Edward Birch presented the institution award to CEO Scott Reed for the Music Academy of the West for 70 years of excellence. One of their latest coups was bringing 8,000 people to La Playa Stadium for the biggest-ever classical music event in Santa Barbara history.

The Academy is among the nation’s pre-eminent summer schools for young classically trained musicians. The scholarships are sought by more than a thousand applicants each year and is strictly merit-based. They present an astounding 200 public events in eight weeks, many free of charge.

Hal Conklin presented the philanthropy award to Anne Towbes and Michael in memoriam. Michael was one of the early visionaries of the Granada Theatre renovation. Besides major financial support, he served on many committees and the board of directors. He would say, “We only have one chance to do this right. We want this theatre to serve the community for over 100 years.” He has always been generous with his time, talent, and treasure supporting literally hundreds of nonprofits, many related to the arts. He did this with his late wife, Gail, and with Anne. The program quoted Shakespeare: as Hamlet said, “He was a man, take him for all in all. I shall not look upon his like again.”

Anne Smith began her career as an English and drama teacher, moving from Michigan 26 years ago. She and her late husband, Bob Smith, owned KEYT TV, Santa Barbara Magazine, and C Magazine along with daughter Jennifer Smith Hale. They hosted 20 years of telethons with The Unity Shoppe and more. Anne is active in many nonprofits, winning the Santa Barbara News Press Lifetime 5 – 12 October 2017

Achievement Award and several other titles. When she married Michael, they kept on giving with a special love for the performing arts.

Kentucky Derby time in September?

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School (OLMCS) deemed it, and so it was.

Ladies in elegant hats and gents dressed to the nines sauntered onto the Polo Fields in Carpinteria for a Kentucky Derby party to raise funds for their school. As principal Tracie Simolon said, “for affordable Catholic education to all who seek it.” They give scholarships to needy students.

The school is kindergarten through eighth grade.

During cocktail time, parents and parishioners were busy, busy with the huge silent auction bidding and betting on the filmed horse races. There were also photo ops with a polo pony and her mistress Shannon McGraw.

And I have to give a shout-out to the décor ladies headed up by Claudia Pakes and her helper Michelle Damiani. The giant hand-made paper flowers were stunning, as were the black-and-white striped tables highlighted with hot pink. Michelle was also one of three co-chairs along with Jen Caesar and Megan Hubbs. There were 19 areas to be coordinated and, as Tracie said, “countless hours” to make this fête happen.

It was also a night to honor the reverend Maurice O’Mahony, pastor emeritus. This was the jubilee celebration year of Father O’Mahony’s 50th anniversary as a priest. Originally from Dublin, Ireland (and with that charming accent), he was ordained in Limerick City, 1967. He then moved to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, serving in Simi Valley. And on to Lompoc, Woodland Hills, Pomona, finally joining Our Lady of Mount Carmel as pastor in 1997. He “retired” in 2009.

He helped revitalized the church and school especially in the creation of the art studio. His stalwart companion for many years was his dog, Beebe, who didn’t mind being by the altar.

rity-wedding going on and a door guard told the pastor he couldn’t enter his church. Wrong! He made sure the guard knew who he was and that anyone could come in anytime. That was also the end of celebrity weddings, unless you had been a church member for a year.

Master of ceremonies was Gary Caesar. The current priest, the reverend Lawrence Seyer thanked the teachers for a wonderful evening.

Auctioneer Drew Wakefield kept the 11-item live auction moving during and after dinner. Then it was time to dance literally under the stars, since there was no tent. How romantic!

A Mission of Hope

“If you’d had 200 house guests a night for 30 years, wouldn’t your home need renovation?” asked Santa Barbara Rescue Mission president Rolf Geyling. We were at the groundbreaking celebration for a 40,000-sq-ft remodel of the Yanonali Street facility for the homeless – a $10-million endeavor. Partners in the renovation are the Tynan Group, Montecito Bank & Trust, Frank Schipper construction, Kilburn Architects, and PMSM architects.

As board person pastor James Kinzler said, “We’ve been in town since 1965 and on Yanonali since 1986.

We’ve served three million meals and given 1.7 million nights of shelter, plus having 723 men and women complete our programs.” Board chair Paul Johnson added, “There is no funding from the state. It is all local” Chair of the Mission of Hope campaign Karl Willig shared, “We began talking about this campaign 13 years ago. This is the only place in town that is open 365 days a year, and we serve 100 to 150 people daily. District attorney Joyce Dudley expressed, “I’m in awe of the job they do. They rescue our most vulnerable.” Sheriff Bill Brown added, “I see in the audience people known for their compassion.

We thank them for their time, talent, and treasure.” The facility will remain open during renovation.

Most touching was Karla Lara’s story of her rescue by the Mission.

As she said, “I was an addict. They never gave up on me for three years.

They made me feel like a person. I had forgotten I was. I stayed at Bethel House. Now I have a job and I got my family back – kids and grandkids. The Rescue Mission allowed me to live two lives in one lifetime, and I prefer this one.”

Westmont Celebrates 80th at Homecoming

W

estmont celebrates its 80th anniversary by hosting a variety of events at Homecoming 2017, October 13 to October 15, including Westmont’s 80th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, October 14, at 5:30 pm at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort, 633 East Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara. The special festivities begin in the outside rotunda and move inside the grand ballroom for dinner and a program to recognize 80 alumni honorees. The Young Alumni and Student Dance follows at 9:30 pm. Tickets to the anniversary celebration, which are separate from Homecoming, cost $50 per person and must be purchased in advance. Registration at westmont. edu/alumni ends October 6. Tickets are expected to sell out.

The celebration features president Gayle D. Beebe telling an inspiring story about Roger Voskuyl, the college’s third president. The Westmont Jazz Band plays during the outdoor reception, and alumnus David Britton ’94 performs as well as the Chamber Singers during dinner.

The Young Alumni Association invites all alumni and current junior and senior students to attend the outdoor dance, which is included in the anniversary celebration registration or $10 at the door.

Other Homecoming events include the dedication of the Global Leadership Center, faculty lectures for alumni by Cynthia Toms, associate professor of global studies and kinesiology, and Greg Spencer, professor of communication studies, AllAlumni Barbecue Lunch, Kid’s Fair, Young Alumni Tailgate, men’s and women’s soccer games, chapel service with alumnus Steve Yamaguchi ’75, and the All-Alumni Worship Celebration featuring campus pastor Ben Patterson, who will retire at the end of the academic year.

Panel to Discuss Learning for Wisdom

Several Westmont professors will explore learning for wisdom in a panel discussion Thursday, October 5, at 3:30 pm in Hieronymus Lounge at Kerrwood Hall. The Provost’s Lecture focuses on Learning for Wisdom: Christian Education & the Good Life, a new book by James E. Taylor, Westmont professor of philosophy.

“There are three kinds of wisdom: theoretical (wisdom about what is true), practical (wisdom about what is good), and productive (wisdom about what is beautiful and/or useful),” Taylor says. “So, learning for wisdom leads to wise reflection, wise action, and wise creation. I wrote the book primarily for students at Christian liberal arts colleges to help them better understand, appreciate, and experience Christian general (liberal) learning.”

Taylor, who chairs the Westmont Philosophy Department, graduated from Westmont, earned a Master of Arts in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Arizona. He specializes in epistemology, philosophy of religion, and Christian apologetics.

The panel includes a professor from each academic division of the college: Greg Spencer, professor of communication studies (humanities), Tom Knecht, professor of political science (social sciences), and Jeff Schloss, professor of biology (natural and behavioral sciences). Each will comment on different chapters from “Learning for Wisdom” that relate to their discipline. Students from different majors will also be present to ask Taylor questions about other chapters of the book.

“I hope people will learn more about the nature, purpose, and value of a Christian liberal arts education,” Taylor says. “I also hope they will be motivated to read my book.”

Learning for Wisdom will be available for purchase for $10.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8 No Repairs Necessary – Shawn Colvin was already a well-established singer-songwriter even before her 1997 album A Few Small Repairs catapulted her career into the stratosphere. Indeed, she’d taken home the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1989 for her debut, Steady On – still her best album in some circles – and seen Fat City also fare well. But the reception for Repairs and its hit single “Sunny Came Home” – a breakup record that tackled loneliness, self-doubt, depression, and anger with a vengeance and a smart use of metaphor – were of another order, with the single capturing both Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammys while the album sold multi-platinum. Colvin is hitting the road to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary, a tour that also represents her first foray with a full, six-piece band since the initial shows behind A Few Small Repairs, which is also enjoying a reissue as an expanded CD featuring seven live tracks culled from the Sony Music archives. She’ll perform the original album in its entirety alongside a variety of hits, personal favorites and surprises from her full repertoire, including covers. Multi-instrumentalist-singer Larry Campbell and his wife singer-guitarist Teresa Williams, who are part of the band, will also open the show. The duo, which spent seven years with Levon Helm, has just released Contraband Love, the follow-up to their 2015 eponymous recording debut that topped the Americana Radio charts. Formal Devices – Local choreographer Weslie Ching graduated from UCSB’s Dance Department back in 2002, but spent more than a decade in the Los Angeles and Southland area as both dancer and choreographer before returning to town a few years ago. Banjo Family – Husband and wife Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn are known as “the king and queen of the banjo” for creating a partnership that somehow even exceeds the substantial sum of the parts. Fleck is a 15-time Grammy Award winner who has brought the banjo to innumerable genre-bending extremes with a jazz-to-classical ingenuity that retains his bluegrass roots. Washburn, also a old-time music fan, is more of a singer-songwriter in the Alison Krauss vein, but has also revolutionized the clawhammer banjo by combining it with Far East culture and sounds. After years of only officially guesting on each other’s albums and playing together on and off in the Sparrow Quartet when afforded the time away from other obligations, the pair put out their self-titled debut and promptly scored a 2016 Grammy Award. Their follow-up album, Echo in the Valley, comes out on Friday, October 20, but the power couple are already on tour promoting the new disc, which represents yet another foray into a new frontier, both sonically and in songwriting, as the album is largely full of originals that were co-written by the couple. They also employed strict rules for recording, including requiring that all sounds were created only by the two of them, and only with their seven banjos and their voices. Fleck and Washburn’s themes run from ferrying Syrian refugees to safety to Native American lamenting a continual distancing from nature to invoking an emphatic mantra for our current political and social times.
