ecently, vice president Mike Pence, attending an Indianapolis/San Francisco football game, left early when 49ers players took a knee during the National Anthem. The VP of the United States said, “I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our flag or our national anthem.”

Predictably, Pence was roundly criticized by the “Never Trump” press.

The NFL is Big Business; Stadiums are its Workplace

Super Bowl 2017 in Houston was watched by one in every three Americans. A single ad cost $4,596,863. CBS, Fox, NBC, and ESPN paid $5 billion last year for the broadcast rights to NFL games. DirecTV and foreign broadcast deals added another $2 billion.

The average NFL franchise is worth $2.5 billion, led by the Dallas Cowboys at $4.8 billion, up 14% from last year. The least-valuable franchise is the Buffalo Bills at $1.6 billion, up 8% over last year. The Dallas Cowboys were the only NFL team worth more than $2 billion five years ago. Now, all but five of the 32 NFL teams are worth at least $2 billion. Andrew Luck, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, is the highest-paid player in the NFL at $24.6 million per year, plus endorsements. NFL stars are role models for millions of kids, which is why the league has rules and imposes penalties for spousal abuse, drug use, and other bad behaviors committed on or off the playing field.

Disrespect for the Flag, the National Anthem, and Fans

As an older American and a veteran, I look to the NFL leadership to do a better job of managing its workplace and providing its customers with an enjoyable product free of politics and divisiveness. Millions of NFL fans thought it was offensive when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the playing of the national anthem while wearing socks that depicted police officers as pigs. Inexplicably, no action was taken by the NFL, which had forbidden NFL players from wearing a patch to support the victims of the 9/11 World Trade Center bombing. At season’s end, the offending quarterback was released and still has not been hired by another team. Now, fellow NFL players defend his right to free speech and kneel, sit, or link arms “in solidarity.” Some insist this is not about respect for the flag, that it is about free speech and racial injustice.

A substantial majority of all Americans believe that our county has had, and still has, racial inequality issues. Blacks have legitimate racial grievances, despite the fact that during the Civil War hundreds of thousands of whites lost their lives to win their freedom. he report I caught was not put together by anyone who made any other such prediction (“No Jobs Wanted,” MJ #23/40), but given by the morning anchor on KFI/Los Angeles on 09/26/17, and who’s usually pretty good reporting on such matters. Per one of your other editor’s notes, I’m also not sure President Trump’s due credit for the stock market’s rise so far under his watch, as financial advisor Rick Edelman had predicted a strong lift all the way out to 2030, way before DJT announced his run.

And as you may have heard, The New York Times reported his tax cut proposal will benefit Trump, personally, to the tune of something like $1 billion! Poor Donald’s just not getting much good publicity out there in media land!

John Seymour Montecito (Editor’s note: A “morning anchor on KFI” reported that even if the president succeeds in bringing jobs back to the U.S., “wages won’t be any higher.” Wow, I had no idea such a financial expert as a morning anchor on a local radio station was broadcasting such statistical surety. I’m sorry, Mr. Seymour, for questioning the validity of the statement now that I know a morning anchor has certified his statement as true beyond any doubt. And wow, the indifferent, unbiased, and objective New York Times reports that the new proposed tax plan “will benefit Trump, personally, to the tune of something like $1 billion!”

Wow! Let me add another exclamation point: !! It must be so. Dear Karen Friedman (“More on ‘Real Americans,’” MJ #23/40), The reason I know about America is because I have been living here almost half my life, and how I know about “freedoms protected under... Constitution” is because not only can I read and learn about the rule of law that kept America strong and safe, but I’ve lived here long enough to experience that first-hand and have seen the difference, enabling me to compare.

There is no rule of law in Russia; any law that belongs to everybody and is equally applied to everyone. You cannot learn to be Russian by coming to visit for a few days or watching CNN, you must be born there or live a life on the inside of that broken country to understand what’s really going on.

And how about that $500,000 price you put out on your freedoms? For 99.9% of the world’s population, this price is unattainable. In addition, you cannot “buy” the Green Card, you have to run a gainful business employing U.S. citizens, comply with myriad difficult rules and pass various tests to qualify, only to get tested again in a few years to further validate the status.

So, if the price is impossible to pay and the tests are impossible to pass for most of the world, your assertion of the “price” of becoming an American lacks factual merit. Let alone that the word “priceless” was used in my letter purely metaphorically to underscore the value of being an American, which is under-appreciated by most of those born into it, including, as it seems, Mrs. K. Friedman herself.

t this month’s Montecito Association (MA) meeting, Diane Gabriel of the Montecito Sanitary District (MSD) reported on a project that the District is pursuing, which includes building a new Essential Services Building on the 5-acre campus across from the Santa Barbara Cemetery.

The project is part of MSD’s 2004 master plan, which also included a new maintenance building and laboratory, which have already been built.

This new building will replace the existing Essential Services Building, which MSD board president Bob Williams reports is undersized and has mold, termites, asbestos, no insulation, and a leaking roof.

The new building, designed by architect Brian Cearnal, will be built on a different portion of the campus, in order to abandon the access on Monte Cristo Lane. “The neighbors are very supportive of the project, in part because it will take traffic off of their residential street,” Gabriel said.

In addition to staff and guest parking accessed off Channel Drive, the building will include a meeting room, lobby, and offices, set around an internal courtyard to give staff outdoor space. “We are making the footprint as compact as possible,” Cearnal said.

The building will be Spanish Colonial Revival in style, with a terra cotta roof and white walls.

Design details are expected to be hammered out at Montecito Board of Architectural Review (MBAR) in the coming months, but the project is not required to be reviewed by the Montecito Planning Commission (MPC). The project is expected to be completed in two years and is completely funded by the MSD. “We have all of the funds necessary,” Williams said. “It’s very high on our priority list.” The MA board indicated that they will support the project to MBAR.

Also at the meeting: Montecito Fire Division chief of operations Kevin Taylor reminded the board and audience that we are currently in peak local fire season, which runs from October to December. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect this week from Thursday to Saturday due to expected high winds. Chief Taylor suggests that given the recent fires in California, in which lives and property were lost, that everyone is signed up for Aware & Prepare, the district’s emergency notification system.

MFPD and MA are teaming up on Monday, October 23, at Montecito Union School for a Disaster Preparedness Forum from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. The forum will go over evacuation plans and preparedness for fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, nuclear threats, floods, and other emergencies. For more information, visit www.montecitofire.com.

Board Approves ShortTerm Rental Ban

After dozens of hearings over the last two years and many hours of debate, last week, the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to approve an ordinance banning ShortTerm Rentals (STRs) in unincorporated Santa Barbara County, including Montecito. The ban has a few exceptions, the merits of which were discussed at length during last week’s hearing.

The board voted to prohibit STRs in residential zones, agricultural zones, and mixed-use zones, while allowing “Homestays” in residential and AG-1 zones, with restrictions. A homestay is a short-term tenancy in which an owner or long-term tenant of at least six months is on the property at the same time as the short-term tenants.

not exceed the rental of more than three bedrooms, and a homeowner can only apply for one homestay license.

Homestays must also have a nuisance response plan in place. Those wanting to apply for a permit for a homestay may do so in early 2018.

After discussing the draft ordinance language for multiple hours, as well as hearing from 45 members of the public, the board ultimately voted to allow STRs in commercial zones, as well as a new overlay (dubbed the Coastal Zone Historic Overlay Zone), located in Montecito. The overlay district spans from South Jameson Lane to the beach, between part of Danielson Road and Posilipo Lane.

Roads including Edgecliff Lane, Miramar Beach, Humphrey Road, and Eucalyptus Lane are included in the overlay district. The Sea Meadow planned unit development is also included in the zone, despite the fact that STRs have been prohibited by the development’s CC&Rs since 1990.

The overlay district does not include Padaro Lane, an area some say has historically been used for short-term rentals. The board of supervisors may include more areas to the overlay at a later date, and the current overlay must first be certified by the Coastal Commission before permits will be issued. “It definitely will not be by the end of this year and most likely

not next year either,” said long-range planner Jessica Metzger, who presented the ordinance language to the board. “It can take a long time for the Coastal Commission to certify what the board decides.”

Supervisors Janet Wolf, Das Williams, and Joan Hartmann voted in favor of the ban, with supervisors Steve Lavagnino and Peter Adam voting against it. The grace period to operate STRs and transition to another allowed use is until September 30, 2018. Then enforcement actions will start taking place against those illegally operating STRs in the zones that the use is no longer allowed in.

At that time, the County will cease collecting Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) on short-term rentals that are being run illegally. It is estimated that current STRs bring in roughly $1.5M to $2M per year, and that if regulated rather than banned could bring in upward of $3M. “We’re talking about a number in excess of three million dollars. We have to start realizing there is a cost associated with our decisions. What that means is that we have to cut deeper, and deeper, and deeper, into our programs. The last thing that this board needs to be doing is cutting revenue that is coming in right now,” Supervisor Lavagnino said to justify his dissenting vote on the ban. “We

tate Street Ballet just celebrated its 23rd anniversary with the gala “A Night To Remember” at the Four Seasons Biltmore. After cocktails in the garden, guests entered the stunning Loggia room, easily reminiscent of a Hollywood nightclub. It was a vision of peach and gold with life-size silhouettes of dancers on the walls, which were then backlit in soft pink.

Patricia says, “I have brought many friends to view State Street Ballet’s performances over the years and continue to hear the astonishment of people who say, ‘This is Santa Barbara’s Ballet Company? They’re fabulous!

Ballerina Leila Drake made a plea for pointe shoes, which cost about $100, and only last for a week. There were dance vignettes throughout the evening and executive, and artistic director/founder Rodney Gustafson addressed the audience.

“Flamingos” greeted us all around Nancy Reed’s garden as she hosted the Hillside House Women of Purpose “If You Can’t Stand Up, Stand Out” inspirational benefit luncheon. The tables were set with cloths the color of flamingos and centered with gorgeous pastel blooms. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing, but the umbrellas stayed in place, mostly.

Nancy’s small but mighty committee was co-chair Norris Goss, Marcia Wolfe, Mary Freeman, Jo Thompson, and Mary Thomas.

Proceeds will benefit the 59 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities that call Hillside House their home.

The residential facility is 72 years old and has served hundreds over the years. The future is Hillside House’s Community Plan to build state-ofthe-art adaptive housing units in an integrated neighborhood setting in the Veronica Canyon section of Santa Barbara.

Tita Lanning was recognized for her annual generosity of giving her grand garden for the other fundraiser soirée that happens once a year.

Father John Hardin gave the blessing but first joked, “Nancy, which bathroom do I use since I have a dress on?” He had his long robe, of course.

Board president Jim Wolfe introduced the “Woman of Purpose”, who this year was Susan Chapman.

Susan is the parent of a developmentally disabled daughter and says, “Happiness is in the heart, not in the circumstance.” She has served on the board for the past 12 years and is extremely knowledgeable in the laws protecting the disabled. She was 28 when she had her daughter, Julie.

Susan said she cried for five months and then began the many years of caring for her. When Susan divorced and had to work, she told how hard it was to put Julie in a home, but she loved her new environment.

Executive director Craig Olson introduced the keynote speaker Mike Schlappi, who is in a wheelchair. At age 14, Mike expected to have a career in sports until a tragic accident when his best friend accidentally shot him in the chest. His girlfriend dumped him in three days.

He still remembers her name. After months of intense physical therapy, Mike began to play basketball from his wheelchair. He went on to the Paralympics four times, winning two gold medals (world champion) and two bronzes. He is now married, has five children, and is a motivational speaker. His book is titled Shot Happens. I got shot. What’s your problem? Makes one pause for thought.

To end the afternoon, Mary Anne Valois urged everyone to contribute just $10, raising $1,000 quickly. There is a long wish list. An Evening in Bloom

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria hosted its largest annual fundraiser on campus instead of the usual greenhouse location. The co-chairs Gail Persoon and Stefanie Herrington (board president) and their committee worked magic in the gym. The ceiling was adorned with giant swags of white fabric lined with lights coming down to the floor.

Dozens of ficus trees in pots lined the walls. It was like a lighted garden.

Executive director Victoria Juarez was mingling with the crowd of 200.

After cocktails, it was time for the seated dinner and program. A big seller was the raffle, not for the usual bauble but for $5,000 cash sponsored

by Mac Brown Excavating, Inc. A Girls Inc. alum and national scholar Andrea Delgado spoke, telling us of her plans to attend medical school.

She recently graduated from Harvard.

“There’s one thing you have to learn at Harvard and in life sooner rather than later, if you’re going to be happy: don’t compare yourself to others. Any feelings of insecurity I had a Harvard were fleeting, because of the skills I learned at Girls Inc.” The evening’s honoree was Terry Hickey Banks, who has advocated for Girls Inc. and been an active community member related to education and the quality of life for Carpinteria’s youth. She was named Carpinterian of the Year in 2010. Terry has been involved with Girls Inc. for more than 10 years as a board member, president, and co-chair for fundraisers.

Her efforts have reaped more than $100,000 for the girls. And she loves the Eureka! college bound program.

Girls stay on the UCSB campus during the summer to get a feel for what college is all about. Terry’s credit list goes on.

Singing to the Soul with Snatam

T

here are theories that the purity and beauty of Snatam Kaur’s voice arise not only from her abundant musical talent but also serve as a reflection of a life of steadfast spiritual devotion that dates to her early years being raised in the Sikh and Kundalini Yoga tradition and communities. Snatam spent 20 years studying with and in the presence of the famed Yogi Bhajan, who is among those credited with popularizing yoga in the United States. She learned the essence of Naad Yoga, a form that is focused on sacred sound.

She has taught and shared Naad Yoga and Kundalini Yoga and meditation for nearly two decades, and still offers workshops in her community. But it’s through her CDs and concerts that her message of peace

The devotional singer mesmerized a sold-out audience at the Marjorie Luke Theatre back in the summer of 2015, when her crystalline vocals and peaceful presence highlighted her interpretations of traditional Sikh chants that have been transformed into a blend of sacred mantras sung in English with broad musical settings that contain both Eastern and Western influences.

Now, Snatam is set for a return performance at the same venue on Wednesday, October 18. As before, the event is likely to be an experience that’s part concert, part chant-fest, part group meditation with music, and even a mini-yoga class with melody inspiring inner movement. Snatum sings in English to make the words more accessible, and while perhaps the impact of the sacred Sanskrit syllables are lost in the translation, her heartfelt delivery of the simple messages convey the meaning.

Accompanying herself on harmonium (Indian pump organ), as well as violin and guitar, Snatam is joined by a musicians playing traditional tablas – which serve to ground the sound in Punjabi Sikh musical tradition – plus pop band staples guitar, bass, and keyboards. The shows typically begin with Snatam leading the audience in a round of pranayama (yogic breathing) and perhaps inviting people to get on their feet for a stretching exercise.

Then the call-and-response segments alternative with straight performances to build the evening.

Disrespecting our flag and our nation during the national anthem is like sticking a hot poker into the eye of every American citizen who loves this country and its commitment to “one nation, (under God) with liberty and justice for all.” When U.S. military coffins, draped with the American flag, filled with those who have given their lives for the protection of our freedoms, are unloaded at Dover AFB, no one cares what color of man or woman lies in that coffin.

Red is the color of blood for all Americans – black, white, or brown.

Protest in the Workplace

Do NFL players, who are fined for excessive end-zone celebrations, excessive roughness, and all sorts of improper behavior, have a First Amendment right to protest during the national anthem? Would the NFL tolerate a player who ran around the stadium waving a Confederate flag during the national anthem – claiming a right to free speech? You can bet that such a player would be booed by the fans and fired by the team owner before the player had completed one lap.

The workplace is not the proper venue for the grievance industry. No business can allow its employees to offend a majority of its customers during working hours. A policeman in Chicago is prohibited from engaging in political activity while in uniform. NFL team members certainly have the right to express their feelings, but on their own time, off the field, and out of uniform.

Do NFL Rules Cover Players’ Behavior?

The NFL pays meticulous attention to every detail that goes into putting on a professional football game including defining end-zone antics and proper player apparel, down to the smallest uniform patch. The NFL “bible” is the league’s Game Operations Manual – nearly 200 pages of procedures and policies.

It is military-like in its precision and astonishing in its thoroughness. Section A62 63, governing conduct during the national anthem, reads: “The national anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the national anthem. During the national anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand and refrain from talking... It should be

pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country.” Penalties include fines, suspensions, and forfeiture of draft choices.

Teamwork and Family

The great Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, postulated that “Individual commitment to a team effort is what makes a team work, a society work, or a civilization work.” I understand that in professional sports, team solidarity can mean the critical difference between winning and losing. Therefore, it came as no surprise that when the president, exercising his own right to free speech, criticized the league for its acceptance of bad behavior, as coaches, players, and owners linked arms, sat down, or took a knee to show support for fellow members of their team. Coaches and owners opted to put loyalty to their employees ahead of loyalty to their customer fan base, knowing that the value of their teams and their chances to win depend upon team solidarity.

Solutions to End This Controversy

What do we do now to restore the game to its proper role as sports entertainment? At least four solutions have been suggested – three of them bad.

1) Ban the national anthem at all sports events. Horrible idea. If these players can’t find something good to feel about this country when the national anthem is played, fans that do love their country will boycott the game in droves.

2) Have the whole team stay in the locker room until after the playing of the national anthem. Bad idea. Sorry, Pittsburg Steelers and Tennessee Titans. It’s a cowardly cop-out, disrespectful to millions of fans.

3) Have the players link arms in a display of unity during the playing of the national anthem. Bad idea. Another cop-out because it does not allow individual players to stand at attention and place one hand over the heart, or salute if appropriate.

4) Best idea: do what you have always done and respect flag and country by standing during the national anthem, and placing hand over heart; allow one exception. Any protesting player who cannot respect our flag can stay in the locker room during the national anthem but should expect to get booed when he makes his post-anthem appearance.

Let’s get back to a season of great football, happy fans, and great tailgate barbecues – or is that too politically incorrect?

The National Football League is in a golden age right now: It’s been 23 days since one of its players has been arrested. The average time between arrests is just seven days, while the record without an arrest is slightly more than two months, at 65 days, according to NFLarrest.com, which “provides an interactive visualized database of National Football League player Arrests & Charges,” the site says.

Players get arrested for a variety of crimes: drunk driving, drug offenses, domestic violence, assault and battery, gun violations, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, theft, burglary, rape, and even murder.

The NFL virtually embraces players who abuse women. Take this report in the Chicago Tribune: “In the second round [of the 2017 draft], the Cincinnati Bengals selected Joe Mixon, who in a much-viewed video punches a woman so hard that she falls down unconscious. In the sixth round, the Cleveland Browns selected Caleb Brantley, who was accused of doing pretty much what Mixon did.”

By year, 2006 was a doozy: 71 arrests of NFL players. 2013 had 62 arrests, while last year was the lowest in the database at just 28 arrests. This year, the players are setting a torrid pace: assault and battery 7, Drugs 6, DUI 5, domestic violence 5, disorderly conduct 4, resisting arrest 2, guns 1, license/traffic 1, other 1. That makes 32 arrests and we’re only in Week 3.

The top crimes are: DUI 218, drugs 100, domestic violence 98, assault 74, disorderly conduct 44.

The most arrests: Adam Jones, with 10. Jones has played for both Tennessee and Cincinnati, and he’s been accused of poking a hotel worker in the eye, punching a woman, spitting in a woman’s face at a nightclub, and was “charged with felony coercion in connection to a strip-club shooting that paralyzed a man.” The top positions of those arrested: wide receiver 140, linebacker 119, cornerback 116, running back 99, defensive tackle 80. So, maybe, just maybe, NFL players aren’t the best ones to be preaching to America about the perils of police brutality.

We all know that anybody that uses his head as a battering ram is obviously prone to head injuries and therefore liable to not be playing “with a full deck,” as the saying goes. But the same can’t be said of the owners, most of whom, if not all, are billionaires. It begs the question of “Why are these owners shooting themselves in the foot”? Did none of them foresee the blowback and outrage this would cause among us “deplorables?” Didn’t any of them foresee that the childish behavior of their players would have serious repercussions on their bottom line?

There is a growing chorus of antiNFLism sweeping the country, with calls to burn the offending teams’ merchandise, to boycotting the games altogether, to calls for withdrawing all taxpayer support, and an end to the

league’s exemption from the anti-trust laws. Maybe it took something like this to shake middle America out of its lethargy and start getting involved in a much more meaningful way.

One thing for sure, the narrative has certainly been changed for the better, thanks to President Trump.

Targets and Shields

B

y saying someone has become a “target,” we imply that the person needs a “shield.” Yet ironically, the word “target” derives from words which mean “shield.”

The paradox may have arisen from the idea of using a shield for target practice in the days when arrows and spears were the main offensive weapons.

As an instrument of defense, the portable shield has a long history (persisting even today among riot-control police.) The Romans customarily carried deceased warriors home on their shields. Hence, a father’s traditional pre-battle wish that his son return “with his shield, or on it.”

One striking use of shields was in a formation the Romans called a “testudo” (meaning a tortoise). In this tactic, a number of warriors stood closely together, with their shields forming a sort of defensive wall and roof, making them a completely enclosed “box,” like a primitive tank.

But modern “progress” in mass killing has made necessary much more sophisticated kinds of protection – especially for “civilians” (no longer exempt from being targets). One of my earliest memories is of being issued my own gas-mask. This must have been early in 1939, when I was 5 years old. War didn’t come until September of that year (by which time I was with my mother and sister in Canada) – but the gas masks were part of a British government-sponsored readiness campaign, called “Air Raid Precautions” (or A.R.P. for short) – even though the prime minister, Neville Chamberlain, had just recently returned from a conference with Hitler in Munich, and said he believed he brought “Peace for our time.”

I still remember the rubbery smell when you put that gas mask on. And I also remember a song I must have heard at about that time: nderneath the spreading chestnut tree, U There Mr. Chamberlain said to me, If you want to get your gas-mask free, Join the blinking A.R.P.!

During the actual war, the “target” came primarily to mean whatever place you had been sent to drop bombs on, as the returning Allied airmen rejoice, in the song “Coming In On A Wing And A Prayer”: What a show! What a fight! – Yes, we really hit 12 – 19 October 2017

But, going back several centuries, probably the most famous target in history and legend was an apple. No, not the one responsible for a notorious Biblical eviction – and not the golden one, which is supposed to have indirectly caused the Trojan War. I’m thinking of the apple allegedly shot from his son’s head, with a cross-bow, by the Swiss hero William Tell, for whom this challenge was a penalty for not showing respect to the local tyrant, Gessler.

To this day, the Swiss continue to celebrate marksmanship, and, regardless of all our own (very legitimate) fears of the proliferation of firearms, Switzerland (surrounded by potential enemies) has encouraged the individual ownership of military-style weapons, usually acquired when the owner was performing National Service.

And yet, their statistics of gun-related violence are among the lowest in the world.

But targets of various kinds now form the basis for a surprising number of popular games, from golf to Tiddlywinks. Except in archery and shooting, what you’re aiming at is not usually called a “target.”

In Tiddlywinks, it is a cup or small bowl. In darts, it’s a “board.” In Skeet, it’s what used to be called a “clay pigeon,” mechanically hurled into the air. In horseshoes, it’s a metal spike.

In Quoits, it’s a peg which you try to encircle with a ring. In shuffleboard, it’s an area painted on the floor or deck. In croquet, it’s a series of wire arches called “hoops.”

Otherwise, it’s generally a “goal” or a “hole” or a “basket,” or (as in bowling) some “stick” or “skittle” or “pin” to knock down. Also (in case this may have escaped your attention), the whole game of cricket is actually built around a “bowler,” whose target is a set of three sticks or “stumps” set in the ground 66 feet away.

Finally, for the sake of my animal-loving readers, allow me to lament that in many targets the chief aiming-spot is still called a “bull’seye.” Even considering what in some countries is still legal to do to bulls for entertainment, one shudders to imagine how this expression originated.

And you might like to know that one of my most popular Pot-Shots epigrams says, “To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first – and, whatever you hit, call it the target.”

Blues Brothers and Sisters The 52-year-old Rescue Mission hosted its 16th annual Blues on the Bayou bash at Rancho Dos Pueblos honoring Denny Wayman, who retired last year after four decades as pastor of the Free Methodist Church of Santa Barbara, and, with his wife, Cheryl, founded Cliff Drive Christian Counseling Center in 1995.

This year’s event, Bonjour Bayou! A Tour de France, co-chaired by Susan Hughes and Suzi Ryan of the women’s auxiliary, was emceed by radio host Catherine Remak, and with a record 367 guests, raised more than $400,000.

“It is a considerable part of our annual $2.5 million budget,” says president Rolf Geyling. “We have an open-door policy 365 days a year, serving nearly 145,000 meals and providing in excess of 56,000 safe overnight accommodations.”

Last year, the organization provided 143,051 meals and 51,627 nights of safe shelter, with 173 people participating in the residential treatment program.

Cori Hayman, speaking on behalf of the Montecito Association, reiterated the MA board’s position that homestays should be strictly regulated, suggesting one bedroom shall be the maximum amount of space to be rented out, along with a restriction of one car. The MA also suggested that the County shall only issue a limited number of homestay permits, not to

exceed 3 percent of the total Montecito housing stock, and not have more than one homestay permit per 10 continuous parcels. None of those strict regulations were included in the approved ordinance language.

Other public speakers took issue with the increasing budget deficit faced by the County and by the potential inability to pay for enforcement of the ban.

Active enforcement pathways will be discussed later this year. “I’m looking forward to it coming back to us, because honestly I think we have to have very strong enforcement as we are moving forward with this for STRs and homestays,” Supervisor Wolf said.

Attempted Murder in Montecito

At approximately 7:26 am on October 6, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call in the Montecito area. The caller reported a female was screaming for help and a male, later identified as 49-year-old Barret Paul Murphy of Santa Barbara, was chasing her with a knife in his hand.

Deputies located Murphy on the

Santa Barbara resident Barret Paul Murphy was arrested this week for attempted murder, rape, and domestic assault for an incident that took place in Montecito

street and contacted nearby Montecito Fire personnel. Murphy was detained until deputies could determine what had occurred. Further investigation revealed that Murphy has broken into the victim’s residence, sexually assaulted her and attempted to kill her with the knife he was holding. The victim was eventually able to escape from the house and flagged down an uninvolved vehicle driving down the roadway. The victim was driven to the Montecito Fire Station and eventually taken to the hospital. Murphy was booked into county jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder, rape, sexual assault, and others.

Lieutenant Kevin Huddle with SBSO reported to us the occurrence was a domestic violence incident, and that the suspect and victim knew each other. Because of the nature of the incident, the exact location and further details are not being released at this time.

Murphy’s bail was set at $1 million.

Goodbye to SI On a personal note, I mark the passing of Conde Nast tycoon Samuel Irving “SI” Newhouse at his Manhattan home, aged 89.

While his editors such as Tina Brown, Anna Wintour, Graydon Carter, and Diana Vreeland would take center stage at Vogue and Vanity Fair, Newhouse – who was paying for it all with lavish expense accounts, first-class travel, and hefty interest-free loans – was happy to stay quietly in the background given his intense shyness.

I last saw him at Barneys in New York some years back at a book launch for the urbane editorial director, Alexander Lieberman, an accomplished painter, photographer, and sculptor.

Newhouse was known as a total workaholic, arriving at his office before dawn and convening staff meetings at 6 am.

Asher, former director of Research and Scholars Programs at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, joined the Westmont Economics and Business Department as professor of economics. He taught the honors sections of both microeconomics and macroeconomics at Wharton, earning the William G. Whitney Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching six times.

He has also taught at Villanova University and Swarthmore College.

He has published articles about unsuccessful settlement negotiations, antitrust policies, state and county incarceration rates, and earnings inequalities. He has often provided expert testimony on the economic implications of antitrust and discrimination cases.

Renowned Violinist Performs Recital Niv Ashkenazi performs Friday, October 13

Niv Ashkenazi, world-renowned violinist, will perform on Friday, October 13, at 3 pm in a masterclass at the music department rehearsal room followed by a performance at 5 pm. in Westmont’s Deane Chapel.

The recital will feature Ashkenazi performing solo violin works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Nathan Milstein. He will also be joined by bassoonist Leah Kohn to perform one of his own arrangements for their duo, Dyad.

Ashkenazi has traveled and performed around the world, including the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. He has won a multitude of awards, including the 2010 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition and the 2007 VSA International Young Soloist Award.

Dyad originally met while studying at Juilliard and has performed on concert series around Southern California, as well as on the East Coast. They perform a combination of traditional repertoire, new works commissioned for them, and their own arrangements.

he grand-opening soirée of Norman Seeff’s solo exhibit, Iconic Rock Photography, at The Shopkeepers store September 29 was a huge success. Arriving to a black-suited doorman, greeted inside by the store’s social media rep Sammi Beach, viewing walls filled with Seeff’s framed photos, conversing with local celebs, artists, filmmakers, designers, and the Santa Barbara elite, it felt soon to be a new norm in the Funk Zone riding on the heels of the newly installed Public Art Project here. Seeff greeted me kindly, “I trust wherever you want to photograph me,” and we decided that he should be amid his poetically famous photographs in the upper store tier.

Following the snaps, we had a oneon-one interview: Q. How did this party about you here happen?

A. I had nothing to do with it all.

David houses my film archive, the largest personal collection of my work.

He called me and said, “I’m having an exhibit in Santa Barbara, and by the way it’s for you.”

And the spiritual creative zone you experienced in switching from medicine in South Africa to photography in New York City...

The photograph was a way for me to get an artist into the studio, and because they’re always coming to me at the height of their latest creation, they were in an altered state of consciousness and we could talk about creativity. So, what I really do is I say to people, “Yes I photograph, but it’s a vehicle to bring the artist into a peer to peer relationship, and then I bring my film crews in after being with the artist for 10 or 15 minutes.” I had to be the first one to be vulnerable and that is a greater challenge than the photography. So, for 40 years I have been filming hundreds and hundreds of artists across all the disciplines – musicians, artists, scientists. I’m spending my money on my projects.

I was originally a medical doctor in Soweto working in emergency medicine. I had to get out of South Africa, move here, and start from scratch.

I got a camera and took photos of the subculture in New York City and while living at the Chelsea Hotel.

Doctors don’t get emotional with their patients; it’s completely objective.

Then I find myself standing face to face with artists, and it’s completely

the opposite – it’s about creating a relationship with the artist. I went through a shock; it was terrifying in the beginning, to go beyond intellect into creative communication, which is emotionally based. I went through a personal paradigm shift focusing on creating on an authentic relationship with the artist.

I focused on, ‘Who are you when you are functioning at the higher reaches of your own creative potential?’ The process was the conversation and emotional vulnerability, the challenge based on a mutual agreement. I know enough about the camera, and I’ve had a good eye since childhood. Creativity is a sacred spiritual journey. Mostly, I meet people for the first time. We converse and then you go together into the zone where time and space stop, inspiring and expanding each other. I see people’s eyes change, they start to sparkle and look at you in a different way. Once the relationship is there, I just document the experience. I call myself an experientialist. Then it’s easy I don’t have to do anything, except make sure that the guys who work with me have the right exposure on the camera and show me where the button is. I have a lot of good photographs, because they were a flow of experience not a preconceived idea.

David asked Seeff to return to autographing his photography book, Norman Seeff: The Look of Sound, and he maintained his unruffled love-andpeace cool despite the throngs wanting book autographs, photo-selfies, and just a piece of his ear. Guests included Roger Durling, Thomas Rollerson, Gina Tolleson, Daryl and John Stegall, Marnie and Doug Margerum, Hank Pitcher, Sherry Villanueva, David and Julie Lexer, Fred Brander, Erich and Amy Riedl, Julia Parke, and Victoria Foyt.

On Entertainment Soleau Seeks Synergy

S

tate Street Ballet resident choreographer William Soleau was thrilled when he received the commission to create dance movements for Mozart’s Requiem, his fourth collaboration with the Santa Barbara Symphony, which kicks off the orchestra’s season at the Granada Theatre this weekend.

“It’s music I’ve wanted to choreograph for a very long time,” Soleau said earlier this week. “But it’s quite an undertaking because the piece is just so powerful. It’s quite a challenge because it has so many sections, with so many ups and downs in the emotions.”

There was also a big decision to make when contemplating a direction for the choreography for the work, which was memorably dramatically staged in the Oscar-winning film Amadeus. “Most go with telling the story, because it’s so intriguing that Mozart never finished it. It was the last piece he wrote, and he only completed a couple of sections, with notes and scraps of paper with the orchestrations on it. There is all that mystery about who it was commissed for. Did he think he was writing it for his own death?”

But Soleau, along with the symphony’s music director Nir Kabaretti, had ideas to take the work in a different direction.

“The music to me is so transformative by itself,” he explained. “So I wanted to do something I rarely ever do: create a ballet that doesn’t have a story, but instead have the audience see the music in the dances, see it become a visual interpretation.”

Soleau said he also chose to ignore the religious aspects of a typical requiem, noting that he “didn’t pay any attention to the Latin text – that whole ‘Thank you for saving me’ or ‘I have sinned’ aspect. It’s not about that.

Mozart didn’t make it about that.

There’s no symbolism. It’s about the music.”

Even so, the movements aren’t random, of course, and the piece develops its own momentum, Soleau said.

“Each of the 14 sections are very different from each other, so in a way I’m creating my own story,” he explained.

“The dancers aren’t just objects for me to play with and move around on the stage. They’re people who have emotions and feelings. When a guy grabs a girl’s hands and looks in her eyes, there’s a connection. Everything has a reason, every section bringing out a different human emotion or trait, some transformative, others uplifting, others that are heavier and more 12 – 19 October 2017

meditative. You can’t overpower the music, because it’s Mozart at its best.”

The concept to focus on the visual aspects also grew out of the staging for the Requiem, in which all of the performers will be on the stage, including the orchestra musicians, the vocal soloists, and the 45-member chorus.

“They’ll all be on a platform raised above the dancers while the dancers are below on a stage built out over the orchestra pit. So, you will be able to see everybody at once.”

Soleau also made a conscious commitment to choreographing the Requiem to the singers’ voices rather than the orchestral notes on the page, which lends another twist to the typical approach, he said. The costumes have also been updated from when the piece was composed in 1791, with the musicians and singers dressed all in black and the dancers all in white, which allows him to “throw whatever colors I want on them” through the lighting. “The requiem moves you as much today as it did 200 years ago,” he said. “It’s timeless.”

While Soleau previously choreographed for the symphony and choral collaboration with State Street on Carmina Burana, that orchestra played in the pit, and the costumes weren’t a factor. “This whole thing is brand-new for me, too, and it’s very exciting.”

What isn’t new is having State Street principal dancer Leila Drake as a focal point. The willowy dancer has been his self-confessed muse for a dozen years, and Soleau has choreographed her as the lead in State Street productions ranging from Carmen to American Tango to Appalachian Spring over the years. But this will be his last as Drake will retire following the weekend’s performances.

“I wanted to make something special for her. The Lacrimosa is very poignant, not exactly sad, but moving.

She’s featured in a very emotional and heartfelt pas de deux to tug at your insides. The character is on the precipice of a life-changing decision, the kind where you don’t know if you’re doing the right thing or not. The piece is all about that. She’s gorgeous doing it.”

While Drake is saying goodbye with Mozart’s Requiem, the program, which opens with the composer’s final symphony, The Jupiter, is the Santa Barbara Symphony’s way of saying hello to its 2017-18 season. The ensemble next focuses on Spanish guitar with virtuoso Pablo Sáinz Villegas, who will also serve as the ensemble’s first-ever artist-in-residence throughout 201718, in a program featuring Rodrigo’s Concerto Aranjuez, and selections by De Falla, Bizet, and Piazzolla (concerts on November 18-19). Also on the horizon: John Corigliano’s Academy Award-winning score for The Red Violin accompanied by the film in its entirety and featuring Canadian violinist Lara St. John as soloist (January 20-21); a tribute to Leonard Bernstein, including selections from Fancy Free and West Side Story, with guest soprano Lisa Vroman and singers from the Santa Barbara Choral Society, plus Copland’s Quiet City and Robin Frost’s Piano Concerto (February 17-18); Ukrainian pianist Alexander Romanovsky perform-

ODC/Dance’s “boulders and bones”, which has its Santa Barbara premiere on Tuesday, October 17, at the Granada, is also a multimedia presentation. The work, co-choreographed by ODC artistic directors Brenda Way (who founded the company back in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1971) and KT Nelson, the movement is set to a live, driving electro-acoustic score composed by cellist Zoë Keating and performed by Erin Wang while a cinematic mise en scène by RJ Muna traces the shifting light, changing landscape, and building process of an Andy Goldsworthy installation as an exploration of the process of creation. The work has been hailed as “A colossal triumph of the imagination continually drawing us back to the mystery of Goldsworthy’s dance with nature” by the Huffington Post, while the company’s hometown San Francisco Weekly raved the work “dances along the edge of shifting light, gravity, and natural chaos. And, like Goldsworthy, ODC makes artistry appear entirely natural, leaving ample room for reflection.” ODC will also conduct a community dance class on

Jarosz Digs Under-neath the Songs

If the ongoing musical gatherings near Sarah Jarosz’s home in the Austin suburb of Wemberly had been a jazz jam instead of a weekly bluegrass bash, the singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist might have ended up a jazz guitarist. As it were, the 9-yearold Jarosz took up the mandolin, and spent half a dozen years jamming on acoustic instruments and figuring out folk music, eventually also finding her way to the clawhammer banjo and guitar. “I’m sure that’s partly why I went that way,” she explained over the phone recently. “It was a really welcoming community for a little girl.”

Fast-forward another decade and a half, and Jarosz is now a Grammywinning singer-songwriter, the proud owner of two trophies, one each for Best Folk Album and Best American Roots Performance for Undercurrent, her latest offering in a recording career that began when she was 17.

The album is also the first one she’s made after graduating from the New England Conservatory and clearly shows an increased maturity and clarity of purpose in both the angular nature of her melodies and arrangements and depth of probing beneath the surface.

“It was the first time that I had the time to think about an album as a full piece of music, with everything having a place, and all the songs meant to be next to each other,” explained Jarosz, who will make her proper Santa Barbara debut at the Lobero Theatre on Wednesday, October 18, after captivating the crowd at the Live Oak Music Festival in 2016. “The others were really just a collection of what I was writing at the time, But this was a very different song process.”

Indeed, as critics have noted, Undercurrent finds Jarosz working her way in largely through concepts about choices, paths taken and denied, and ruminations about the hidden forces that guide us through life.

“I latched onto the idea of undercurrents as being the theme because it was what I was experiencing at that point in my life,” she explained. “A lot of change, dealing with new people, and new places. Being a musician fulltime for the first time, not as a student.

I was 24, a time when you are experiencing what you think is certainty in your beliefs, but also being aware of change, and trying to figure out how to deal with it, as well as deal with all the underlying feelings.”

“I’d never done that before, but when I finished a song like ‘Jacqueline’ or ‘Early Morning Light’ and play them in the apartment, it sounded to me like this was how it should be conveyed. In the past I’d only start that way, but with the idea that how it end up was boundless, that I could use whatever overdubs and layers I wanted. But these felt like they didn’t need anything else and were more powerful as solo. The message behind the lyrics is an intimate and lonesome vibe. What better way to capture that than singing it alone?”

Jarosz said that she’s also finding a balance between observation and bringing her own vision forward.

“The more I’m aware of what’s going on around me, the better a writer I will be, as long as I’m genuine to what I’m actually feeling, not writing something that’s contrived. But I find I can be more genuine with my songs, and listen to myself better, if I’m also listening to everyone else at the same time.”

Most recently, she’s been listening to fellow folk-oriented singer-songwriters Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan, the former members of Nickel Creek and Crooked Still, respectively, who are now her partners in the mini-supergroup I’m With Her. The trio put out an album a couple of years ago and are working on a follow-up to be recorded soon after.

“They’re part of why I started playing music in the first place, so it feels very special – like, pinch me, I’m in a band with my musical heroes who are also my best friends. It’s so exciting.”

Bird in the Land

Like Jarosz, Andrew Bird is also a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who began musical training early, in his case the classical violin at age 4, and went on to broaden the horizons of the Americana field. In Bird’s case, there have been a baker’s dozen worth of albums dating back 20 years,

and myriad projects that range from one-man-band electronic looping to collaborations with Fiona Apple and Blake Mills. Bird’s brand-new album, Echolocations: River, is the second in a series of short films and recordings documenting site-specific compositions performed by Bird and filmed by Tyler Manson in remote and acoustically unique environments. This one was created ankle-deep in the Los Angeles River under the Hyperion Bridge. His performance at UCSB’s Campbell Hall on Saturday, October 14, will bring the project to life via visuals from the film, while he’s also expected to play work from his songfilled albums. Kiddo Comes Back: 4Q’s with Claudia

Kiddo & Patty Hearst, which represents former Montecito resident Claudia McGarry’s first theatrical play after she’d authored several novels, screenplays, and a TV pilot, had a staged reading at Center Stage Theater back in the summer of 2016. Like Marta, nickname of the title character, McGarry was 17 during the summer of ‘74, the same year that Patty Hearst was taken hostage by the SLA and the singer-songwriter era was burgeoning around her home in Laurel Canyon. And she similarly struggled with issues of identity, her place in the world, and her family after her parents split up, finding some strange camaraderie in the saga and various sightings of the captured heiress.

Q. What was the impetus for you to write the play?

A. It’s a personal story, semi-autobiographical, about growing up in Laurel Canyon during the summer where everyone was looking for Patty Hearst. That was the backdrop. In a lot of ways, I felt a bit like a hostage too, because my dad was a heavy drinker and it was hard to live with him. But I don’t really know why I was so obsessed with her at the time.

Why write it as a play?

My daughter, who writes for TV, said that’s how I should do it, because there is a lot of dialog. I thought it was smart to listen to her. It came really easily to me because it had so much truth.

You’ve been living with it for more than 15 months since its first public performance. How has it, or you, changed?

It’s gotten a lot better as I learned a lot of lessons. There were too many characters and scene changes, so I cut them back. It’s been fascinating to me to see how the director’s personality, and the cast, make such a difference. I can’t tell you how much fun it’s been.

In fact, I’m taking a semester off from teaching (currently English at SBCC) for the first time in 30 years to spend time working to get it into other theaters.

Ever hear anything from Hearst or her family?

Someone asked if they could film this production, both for me and her family, but I’m not sure if they know about it. But otherwise, no, I haven’t.

Although he released two fine discs on his own during that stint – 2012’s Through The Rain and 2014’s Trouble At Your Door – Greene wasn’t able to give the album the attention they deserved. But with the Friday, October 20, release of the aptly titled Dream Train looming, Greene made the difficult decision to follow his passion of pursing a fulltime solo blues career and departed from the Parsons gig. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13 Montecito’s Musical MYNX – Midnight MYNX, the all-woman rock quintet with several Montecito residents as members, debut their new original songs with an EP launch party at SOhO tonight. Viva La Diva was recorded this past summer at Angelic Studios in the U.K. with producer J.R. Richards, the former lead singer and songwriter of Dishwalla, the Santa Barbara-based rock band that scored big with “Counting Blue Cars” in the 1990s. The tracks reflect an unmistakable female sensibility, especially the title track, a rock anthem celebrating and empowering women of all ages. Midnight MYNX – which consists of Vivien Alexander (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), Laurie Deans (lead guitar), Stacey Fergusson (bass and vocals), Dawn Sherry (keyboards and percussion), and Donna Eveland (drums) – made their debut at the same music club almost seven years ago and have grown their rock-the-dancefloor set list over the years, covering such artists as Johnny Cash to the Clash, Blondie to the Black Keys, The Monkees to Weezer, and Sublime to Lady Gaga. Now there are original songs to rock out to as well. Also on the bill, Ventura’s blues-rock guitar queen Teresa Russell joined by multi-instrumentalist Tom Buenger on vocals, harmonica, and cajon. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17 Half-Mac Attack – There’s been a lot of intertwining relationships among the members of Fleetwood Mac ever since the mid-1970s, when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks first joined the once bluesbased formerly British pop band. We all know how that all turned out. So, more recently there’s been a musical partnership between Buckingham and Christine McVie, the singersongwriter who once was married to band co-founder John McVie. The collaboration began three years ago when McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac for the group’s “On With The Show” tour. They went in to record new material prior to rehearsals and

discovered that their natural creative chemistry had been reignited, and thus decided to make a duet album.

The eponymous album came out this spring and a succession of dates – which earned strong reviews as the “gusto with which (they) approached the night animated both their new material and classic cuts,” according to the Boston Globe – led to an extension into the fall. Buckingham & McVie play the Arlington Theatre tonight, offering what will likely be a nearly 20-song set mixing the old and new. Apparently, “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” still rings true. Her Aim is True – Alison Krauss was just 14 when she first burst on the scene as a bluegrass fiddling prodigy, and only 21 when she made her Santa Barbara County debut at the Santa Maria-Style Bluegrass Festival back in 1993. It was not much later when Krauss matured into one of the most consummate recording musicians and live performers in roots music, offering precision, finesse, and stunning beauty as both a vocalist and virtuoso on the violin. Krauss’s range in Americana covers a multitude of genres, from folk and country to pop and light soul, while her taste in covers selections is equally impeccable. On her current tour, Krauss and company have been performing “River in the Rain”, a Roger Miller cover from her latest album, Windy City, as well as her endlessly endearing version of “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You” by the Foundations, plus Shenandoah’s “Ghost in This House”, John Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind”, Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing at All”, and Willie Nelson’s “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground”. We’re told her contributions to the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack are also well-represented, plus other tracks from the new album, and a smattering of her own compositions. In a strange pairing, David Gray is billed as co-headliner, though the British singersongwriter has a different approach to his music, if a similar mellow vibe. The veteran songsmith whose melodic ballads mix with folk-pop anthems is appearing both solo and with a backing trio to add a measure of heft to his best-known songs, “This Year’s Love”, “Sail Away”, and “Babylon”.
