Disaster Preparedness in Montecito

N

ext week, Montecito Association and Montecito Fire Protection District are teaming up to hold a local Disaster Preparedness Forum to help residents prepare for emergency situations. The conference will include a panel of emergency responders who will discuss the preparedness plans in place for a variety of disasters including wildfire, flood, earthquake, nuclear threat, and other emergencies.

The forum comes on the heels of devastating wildfires in Northern California, which claimed the lives of at least 40 people and destroyed at least 5,700 homes. In the aftermath of those fires, many Sonoma County residents reported not receiving emergency notifications from their local agencies. Wireless Emergency Alerts (also known as WEAs; the screeching message that comes through on a cellular phone during an Amber Alert, for example) require a chain of command to be sent out by local agen-

cies, as is the case in Sonoma County and Santa Barbara County. So, to save valuable time and pinpoint more specific neighborhoods, local agencies can instead send out emergency notifications through subscription-based services, and Sonoma County reps report that such emergency notifications (NIXLE messages) were indeed sent out to affected areas.

The quickest, most reliable way to ensure that you will receive an alert here in Montecito is to sign up for the County’s emergency notification system: Aware & Prepare. “The County purchased this software in order to notify residents much quicker and easier,” says MFPD rep Jackie Jenkins, who sat down with us recently to discuss emergency notifications in Montecito. Jenkins also shared with us a disappointing statistic: as of September, only about 800 Montecito residents had signed up for the ser-

Richard covered the Royal Family for Britain’s Daily Mirror and Daily Mail, and was an editor on New York Magazine. He was also a national anchor on CBS, a commentator on ABC Network News, gossip on The Joan Rivers Show and Geraldo Rivera, host on E! TV, a correspondent on the syndicated show Extra, and a commentator on the KTLA Morning News. He moved to Montecito ten years ago.

Chamber Orchestra’s Curtain Call

I

t was a decided mix of sadness and joy when the venerable Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, under veteran music director Heiichiro Ohyama, took its final bow at the Lobero in a sold-out Grand Finale at Forty concert.

Even the stoic Heiichiro, a principal violist and assistant conductor at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and chief conductor of the Osaka Symphony Orchestra, who was presented with a bottle of Old Pulteney malt whisky by veteran principal cellist Jacqueline Greenshields for his 34 years of service as maestro, was clearly shedding a tear or two at the performance’s conclusion.

Star of the show was Avery Fisher career grant recipient violinist Jennifer Frautschi playing Mozart’s Strassburg concerto No. 3 in G major on her 1722 Stradivarius after Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, which the orchestra played in its debut concert in 1978 when it was founded by conducting student Jeffrey Evans, performing initially in coffee houses and libraries.

The highly entertaining performance concluded with Menselssohn’s Scottish Symphony No. 3 in A minor, with the dapper Heiichiro at the top of his game.

In the 10 years I have been covering the orchestra, a tony torrent of soloists have performed including pianists Alessio Bax, Wendy Chen, and Jerome Lowenthal, violinists ChoLiang Lin, Paul Huang, and Mark Kaplan, and cellists Lynn Harell, Gary Hoffman, and Carter Brey.

Before the concert, as usual, a Last Supper, catered by Via Maestra 42, was held in the theater courtyard with music disciples including Anne Towbes, Hiroko Benko, Robert and Christine Emmons, Janet Garufis, Michael and Linda Hedgepeth, Mahri Kerley, Robert Weinman,

She explained that the Aware & Prepare messages can be sent directly from MFPD, and do not have to go through the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) first, like a WEA message. “We can send out a massive evacuation notice immediately, when time is of the essence,” Jenkins said.

Last week, the County endured Red Flag conditions, with predicted gusty winds and low humidity; the perfect recipe for a rapidly spreading wildfire, causing imminent threat to life and property. “We are in the heart of fire season, which runs from October through December,” said MFPD chief of operations Kevin Taylor.

“It is imperative that this community is ready,” he said at last week’s Montecito Association meeting.

At next week’s forum, MFPD reps will discuss the District’s “Ready, Set, Go!” program, which gives residents guidance on creating defensible space, creating a “hardened home,” preparing a Family Disaster Plan, and creating an evacuation plan. The forum is scheduled for Monday, October 23, from 5 to 6:30 pm at Montecito Union School’s auditorium, 385 San Ysidro Road.

Also next week, the County of Santa Barbara Flood Control and Water Conservation District, along with the Cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria will hold a meeting to inform the public and receive comments on the preliminary flood insurance rate map (FIRM). The FIRM was recently updated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during the Open Pacific Coast Study, and the new changes will affect properties directly adjacent to the coastline. The new maps will provide the County of Santa Barbara with updated flood risk information to help local officials and residents make informed decisions when evaluating flood risks and purchasing flood insurance.

Local officials encourage residents and business owners to review the proposed FIRM changes in order to learn about local flood risks, potential future flood insurance requirements, and identify any concerns or questions about the information provided.

The maps are currently preliminary and are in a 90-day Appeal Period that started on September 14 and ends on December 12. If you have any techni-

he group was gathered at the Coral Casino for the 5th annual Heroes of Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) luncheon. Hospice provides professional counseling, support groups, and patient care services free of charge to individuals and families who are experiencing the impact of a serious illness or grieving the death of a loved one. HSB is also present on six local high school campuses to work with children and teens who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

After wine time on the terrace, we adjourned to the ballroom for a delicious salmon lunch. Emcees Beth Farnsworth and C.J. Ward introduced board chair Eric Bowers. He told us, “This is the largest attendance ever with 300, that is 61 more than last year.” Thanks went to all level of sponsors. As was said, services are free, but someone has to pay for them.

Hospice CEO David Selberg told, “Last year, Beth and C.J. wore their hearts on their sleeves. This year, they came prepared with a handkerchief.” He was especially proud of their work in schools and reaching out to Carpinteria in a more meaningful way, especially to the Hispanics.

A video of one of their clients, Johnny Aspra, who had ALS, was shown. He chronicled his two-year journey with Hospice as he began to lose control of his muscles, stating, “This has been one of the happiest times of my life (because of the love shown). Take care of yourself and take notice of the seconds ticking by – it’s not just time but your life.” Speaker Jesse Brisendine remembers Johnny as saying, “We’re not here for a long time but to have a good time.”

Pegasus Luncheon

Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center (HTEC) gave its annual Pegasus luncheon at the Coral Casino.

It’s always one of my favorite events because it’s heart-warming to hear how horses change lives there every day for all ages of riders – from vets with PTSD to children who may be confined to a wheelchair. The welcome was given by board president Thom Bateman, who told us, “Santa Barbara County leases us the property for HTEC. Without you and your

horses, we got nothin’. We’ve come a long way.” He mentioned Jean Schuyler, who has been riding with them for 14 years.

New executive director Pamme Mickelson expressed her gratitude for the support she got after there was a hay barn fire right after she came aboard. Within hours, there was more hay and they were back in business the next day. Her staff means everything, and she couldn’t say enough about the volunteers who put in 18,000 hours a year, which is equal to nine full-time staff at a cost of $300,000. Amazing!

Kevin Raimer participates in Operation Unbridled Freedom. There are vets from all the wars back to WWII in the program. Kevin spent 20 years in the Coast Guard. “You

wouldn’t expect someone in the Coast Guard to have PTSD.” He explained that when he was on duty in San Francisco, there were 57 people a year jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.

They had to haul the bodies out of the water. Various work like this can lead to flashbacks for Kevin and many of his crew. There are 24,000 vets in Santa Barbara County, many who have PTSD. A video showed how HTEC started with one horse in 1985. Today, there are 17 horses and 120 volunteers who serve 100 folks a week such as Abbey.

John Reardon is a parent of a daughter who doesn’t walk or talk, but believes she’s in charge when she rides. As soon as his other two children reached 14, they volunteered to HTEC. As John said, “HTEC has helped my whole family.

he Westmont Orchestra Fall Concert features musical celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and solo performances by two Westmont piano students on Friday, October 20, at 7 pm at Santa Barbara Community Church, 1002 Cieneguitas Road, and Sunday, October 22, at 3 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. The orchestra performs Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, which was written for the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession as a centerpiece. “This dramatic work begins with echoes of Renaissance polyphony reminiscent of the music of Palestrina and the Roman Catholic tradition, and concludes with the bold strains of Martin Luther’s ‘A Might Fortress Is Our God,’” says conductor

Michael Shasberger, Adams professor of music and worship. “It is a musical journey outlining the era of the Reformation.”

Also included on the program is Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata for Reformation Sunday, God the Lord is Sun and Shield, with the Westmont College Choir and soloists. “The cantata opens with baroque trumpets, oboes, and strings in a celebrative mood followed by entrances of the choir with the main chorale (or hymn) melody highlighted in dramatic variations,” Shasberger says. “Solo movements alternate with choir movements to tell the story of God’s faithfulness in times of challenge and adversity, ending in the final verse, ‘Preserve us in the true path, Grant everlasting freedom, To raise thy name in glory, Through our Christ Jesus. Amen.’”

Junior Zelin Luan, who came to Westmont from Harbin, China, will perform the first movement from Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor. Junior Jay Real, a student-com-

erman playwright Bertolt Brecht wrote The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in 1941, setting the story in gangster-filled, Depressionera Chicago and using an Al Caponelike crime boss to serve as a thinly veiled screed against the rise of Adolph Hitler and fascism. The satire actually utilized characters based on the führer and his henchmen on an easily identifiable one-to-one basis.

Brecht was in Finland at the time, awaiting entry to the U.S. as World War II raged across Europe, and he wrote the play in less than a month, hopeful that it would serve as his introduction to Broadway once he arrived stateside.

As it were, while Brecht received his entry visa, Ui got no takers in New York and wasn’t even produced in English until 1961, three years after the playwright’s death. But the satire about power and the tools of fear has lived on over the decades, becoming one of the playwright’s most poignant if not perennially popular works and recently received a new adaptation in London by Bruce Norris, who likened the title character to President Trump,

even employing dialogue and placards stating “Let’s make this country great again.”

Westmont theater professor Mitchell Thomas, who is directing the work in a student production on the school’s Montecito campus over the next two weekends, isn’t going to such extremes to make the contemporary connection.

“It felt reductive to do a direct Trump version,” he explained. “Audiences are smarter than that. But they’ll make the connections. It’s not a stretch to feel the U.S. in 2017 pretty deeply. But things are also more universal than just our place in time.”

honna Ordway leads a ritual designed to release the pain and suffering that woman hold not only within themselves but also within the collective of humanity.

Sunday’s activities include Passage Meditation (memorizing and repeating sacred texts as a means of seeding our minds with wisdom) and the World Wisdom Bible (an anthology of texts suitable for this practice), which focuses on how to use the meditation in your daily life.

Rabbi Shapiro received rabbinical ordination from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1981, a Ph.D. in religious studies from Union Graduate School in 1985, and initiation into the Ramakrishna Order of Vedanta Hinduism by Swami Swahananda in 2011. A congregational rabbi for 20 years and a professor of Religious Studies for a decade, Shapiro currently directs the One River Foundation for the study of Perennial Wisdom and heads its World Wisdom Bible project. Holding Together

W

hen Lewis Carroll’s Walrus is suggesting to the Carpenter (in Through the Looking Glass, published in 1871) that “the time has come to talk of many things,” his list begins with “shoes and ships and sealing-wax,” and goes on to “cabbages and kings.” You and I would probably have no problem getting into a discussion about either shoes or ships – and, with a little effort, we might find some pertinent things to say about kings, or even cabbages... but what about sealing-wax?

I wouldn’t be surprised if some people today, especially children, who have only heard the poem read, but not seen it in print, might speculate that it must be some kind of floor wax for ceilings. But actually, as most of us know, sealing-wax, though no longer much used for practical purposes, is only one of many means of physically attaching things to one another – a list which includes nails, screws, brads, pins, buttons, magnets, staples, glues, tapes, clips, clamps, thread, string, cord, rope, wire, zippers, hooks, rubber bands, nuts, rivets, and, of course, Velcro.

I had to say that they are means of “physically attaching,” because, in the virtual world of computer-speak, intangible “documents” can be “attached” to others equally intangible.

But notice how many of the above listed items themselves require physical “attachments” before they can be put to use. Nails need hammers; screws need screwdrivers; buttons need button-holes; magnets need something to attract or be attracted to; staples need staplers; needles need thread; nuts need bolts. And Velcro itself has two separate parts, which very much need each other. Nevertheless, whether attached or unattached, all these items are in the business of holding things such as papers, fabrics, woods, and metals together.

But what about sealing-wax? It usually comes in hard sticks (sometimes scented) – but it has at least four separate qualities which, in combination, make it special: (1) It melts very quickly when a flame is applied; (2) it cools and hardens quickly, once the heat is removed; (3) when hard again, it adheres firmly to many surfaces, especially paper or parchment; (4) before hardening, it is capable of being “stamped” with any desired impression, which it will retain indefinitely. Thus, for example, you can “seal” an envelope by dripping wax on the closure-area – and you can then 19 – 26 October 2017

“imprint” it with your signet ring, or any similar carved metallic surface.

That is probably all you want or need to know about sealing-wax – but I will just share a personal memory from some years ago, when I lived in Britain. At that time, and probably for many years before, certain important parcels, when tied with string, were still required by postal regulations, to have all the knots and crossing-places of the string “sealed” with sealing-wax (presumably for extra security against tampering.)

For all I know, there may be countries where such practices prevail to this day. But in ours, for people who want to use sealing-wax to seal their letters, the chief concern now is whether such “irregularities” will be accepted for mailing, and, even if so, whether the precious seals (e.g., on wedding invitations) will survive intact after going through the postal processing machines.

I know something about the destructive power of such machines through receiving occasional reports of CDs, sent individually by my company, through the mail, in regular cardboard mailers, having been damaged, or at least made unusable, before reaching their unhappy recipients.

In general, however, we must acknowledge that most devices, methods, and substances used in connection with attaching things together usually work, and work well. What bothers us is when the stapler (without warning) runs out of staples, or when the zipper gets stuck, or when the misdirected hammer or needle hits and hurts the user.

The really sad thing, however (if I may get a little maudlin), is that – for all our cleverness at making things stay together – we’re much less adept at maintaining human attachments.

Couples get divorced, friendships dissolve, families come apart, partnerships collapse, loyalties founder.

(Strangely, the bonds we establish with our pets are much more permanent.)

But let Shakespeare have the last word here. In Hamlet, Polonius, advising his departing son, Laertes, mentions some attachments I didn’t even list above. (A grapple was used to link two ships; and, it was steel hoops that held the wooden staves of a barrel together): “Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried – Grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel.”

In Passing Ronald Elden Strahl

R

onald Elden Strahl passed away unexpectedly on August 29, 2017. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who left us all too soon. Family and friends are devastated by this great loss of life.

Ron and Fran had just celebrated 56 years of marriage on August 18.

Ronald was born in Redlands, California, on February 23, 1942. He was the oldest child of Rosalie and Elden Strahl. He had two brothers, Nolan and Sheldon, and a sister, Rosalyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Sheldon.

Ron grew up and attended elementary school through college in Riverside, California.

Ron met Frances (Fran) Sherman in his first year of college in May 1960 while she was in her senior year of high school. There was no doubt there was an instant connection, and they married in August a year later while both were in college and working.

Ron and Fran had a special everlasting love that is hard to find. There was no doubt they were best friends as well as husband and wife; they made a great team.

Ron was a brilliant man with a sense of humor to match. He had an inquiring mind, which led to his profession as a mechanical engineer. On his journey to becoming an engineer, at the age of 15, he built his robot, Rusty. He was featured in a newspaper article and appeared at several events, and even on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar. To this day, Rusty is still a member of the family.

At 16, Ron was employed as a draftsman at Tharaldson, Mathewson, and Argabright, consulting engineers while attending high school. In the

next nine years, he became a designer, completed his education, and became a California professional engineer licensed as a mechanical engineer and also as an associate of the firm then known as TMAD. He was also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Receiving his P.E., Ron was proud to be the youngest licensed engineer in the state of California at that time.

He was a hard-working student, husband, and by then the father of Darren.

He designed systems for hospitals, schools, colleges, banks, restaurants, and large commercial buildings but had an artistic flair and an architectural eye for design.

Ron was encouraged by Santa Barbara architect Don Pederson to come to Santa Barbara in 1967. He came to Santa Barbara during the week and back home to Redlands on weekends for over a year and a half.

That led to the big move in 1969 for the young family of four with the addition of daughter Melanie. In fact,

Ron moved his office to Montecito on Coast Village Circle and the family to a leased home in Montecito in the same week in March. Then, in August, they bought the family home in Montecito where they have lived ever since. Strahl Associates, Consulting Engineers was established and would remain so for almost 25 years. He was a consultant on many projects for several architectural firms in Santa Barbara and other California cities and had at least one project in 36 other states.

After closing his firm, Ron stepped into a new position at UCSB to assist in the implementation of its just-approved Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). He joined the Department of Design and Construction in 1991. Over those 24 years at the university, he did less in the design field per se and managed designers, contractors, and litigation for projects of new buildings and their infrastructure, which included millions of new square footage to the UC campus. He was so proud of his efforts at the university. He enjoyed his work and the people he worked with through the university. It was different from running his own firm, but he liked the change and challenges that came with his new role. He was well-respected for his many accomplishments and projects. Ron retired from UCSB in July 2015 as the deputy director of Design and Construction.

Ron developed an interest in the sport of sailing in the early 1970s. He started sailing Geary 18 sailboats. He thought it would be a good father-son activity. However, Darren wasn’t quite ready to race sailboats with Dad, so Mom became the crew. Many regattas on lakes and in the ocean, and a multitude of funny and not-so-funny experiences for the husband-wife team have entertained family and friends in the tales Ron loved to tell. With new baby Natalie on the way, Darren took over for mom and became Dad’s crew from then on.

The family joined the SB Yacht Club and graduated to bigger boats as the family also grew with the birth of their fourth child, Nanette. Ron was active on the board of directors and worked his way up to serving as commodore of the Yacht Club for the year of 1983. That was the year of the “big storm” and the Queen of England’s visit. huge project of putting the club back in working order. With the help of a strong cadre of the membership, it was accomplished.

The family was also active on the tennis courts at Knowlwood and spent many years playing tennis and swimming in the pool, which produced a couple of competitive tennis and swim athletes in the family. Even though Ron didn’t play much tennis, he referred to himself as the “Jacuzzi coach.”

Ron’s other interests included cars and music. Ron had a passion for cars, from Woodies to sports cars to exotic and muscle cars. He was most happy driving his Corvette and passed his love of cars on down to his children and grandchildren. He also played the trombone. He played in the high school marching band and at church.

He enjoyed and listened to all types of music and was a big fan of New Orleans Preservation Hall.

Ron’s greatest love was his family.

He took great pride in his children’s accomplishments growing up and in the adults they became. Ron loved his role of “Pepaw” to his 10 grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah, Nathan and Nichole Giles; Madison, Andrew, Makenna and Benjamin Tobin; Hunter and Savannah Raad. He spent as much time as he could visiting with them and making every effort to attend their performances, sports events, and birthdays whether here in Santa Barbara or in Safety Harbor, Florida. He was so proud of all his grandchildren. Pepaw had a special relationship with each one. He will be greatly missed.

Ron leaves behind his loving family: wife Fran, and children Darren Strahl (Leslie), Melanie Giles (Ian), Natalie Strahl (Eric Raad), Nanette Tobin (Matt), the aforementioned 10 grandchildren, his brother Nolan Strahl (Kathi), his sister, Rosalyn and her family, his brother-in-law Doug Sherman (Colleen). and several nieces and nephews.

The family is most appreciative and thankful for the valiant efforts of our neighbors and the first responders who were at Ron’s side on August 29.

Ron will be forever remembered and deeply missed by all.

A Celebration of Life in Ron’s honor will be held at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club on Monday, October 23, at 3:30 pm.

In the name of world peace, I do try to be gentle with my words.

Best as I can understand, civil rights are protected under constitutional law and due to an oversight in the Economic Visa Program, investors are only held to USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) rules. For some with diplomatic immunity and ties to shipping and trade, cases can only be transferred to the federal courts in cases of war crimes, genocide, and tax evasion.

I do not consider myself an aggressive, angry ultra-liberal. I am a gracefully aging American citizen who is being denied access to wheelchair-accessible rental housing and toilets.

Letters to the editor are part of the editorial process protected under the First Amendment. I am charged with arguing for argument sake. Possibly true!

A Better Idea

I suggest that Patti Teel share the following idea with the Santa Barbara district attorney. Just telling grandparents about an issue (“DUI Fakery,” MJ #23/41) with a message on local radio stations isn’t enough. A solution is needed, and the sooner it is implemented, the better, since the telephone fraudster is causing undue stress for grandparents.

Grandparents and parents need to talk to their children and grandchildren and come up with a password or answer that only the family knows.

For instance, grandparents can ask for the name of where the grandparents met. The telephone fraudster would obviously not have that information.

A request. If you publish this, please do not use my name. Rather, just identity me as a Santa Barbara resident. I don’t want credit for the suggestion.

There is absolutely no guarantee that these funds will be used for roads, a new police station, bridge improvements, parks facilities, et cetera. These infrastructure needs are merely suggestions and used by the City Council to get voters to pass it. Measure “C” should be voted down and sent back to be re-written so monies raised will be solely earmarked for what it claims: to fix infrastructure needs in the City, not fund salary and pension increases.

Have our politicians put their money where they claim it will go, and put it in writing – don’t merely give lip service to it.

Staying In Touch

I am not a disaster expert, but I do know that the telephone-based systems employed by cities in Sonoma and Napa counties underscored my often-quoted belief that the first thing to go in wars, emergencies, and disasters is communication. In the northern fires, it failed again!

Think September 11 to Katrina, down to all the following disasters we have had in our country. I am convinced people died in the ongoing fires up north because they didn’t get the word to evacuate. Others had to run a fire gauntlet in their cars. Cell phone towers and land lines were destroyed by the fire. Until satellite telephones are the norm, cell towers will continue to be burned to the ground just when they are needed and land-based phone lines will always be at risk.

We know several people in the Santa Rosa area, and at least one family lost their home; others had to evacuate and at least one is still on the edge.

The biggest complaints that they have expressed are the lack of warning and the ensuing traffic jams that panicked many. It took over three hours to make a trip that was normally 20 to 30 minutes.

I propose we take a hard look at the use of sirens in our populated areas to signal evacuation for fires. They can be made fail-safe by back-up batteries and can be placed in strategic areas.

As I said on my recent program with Yolanda McGlinchey, Santa Barbara City Emergency Services manager, I am still convinced that a majority of our residents don’t have a clue about what to do in case of a fire or earthquake as to preparedness, especially as to evacuation routes in the event of Physicist and worldclass balloonist Julian Nott (right) ensures quick delivery of Montecito Journal, no matter where in the world he happens to be

God’s Nemesis

The Hollywood elite sure know how to keep a secret. With the rise of Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu, independent films have a better and more efficient way of reaching a bigger audience. Harvey’s power has been diminished and so his downfall. Some of my favorite movies made it to me because of him. Lion, Pulp Fiction, Carol, to name a few. My favorite movie actress is undoubtedly Meryl Strep. Nobody is in her class of acting. Sophie’s Choice, The Iron Lady, Out of Africa, and even Defending Your Life, to me is as good as it gets.

So, you can see how my screen idol has disappointed me. Although she cannot defend him, she was able to look away. Look away when so many women were taken advantage of and probably much worse. She once described Harvey as God. Most in Hollywood and everywhere else would describe him as God’s nemesis, you know, the guy who wears Prada.

Oliver’s Opening

After years of eager anticipation, we went to the opening night of Oliver’s (formerly Peabody’s) at the corner of Coast Village Road and Middle Road.

The décor and service are first-class and first-time diners seemed to be enjoying their evening. Being 100% vegan, such niceties as meat, fish, milk, cheese, and even butter are verboten. So, I was left to choose from an assortment of salads, veggie burgers, and cauliflower “steaks”. While this may be welcome news to long-suffering vegans regulated to only one or two options at other local haunts, it leaves us omnivores with a dilemma.

This made me think of a time not so long ago when restaurants had a separate smoking section for people who wanted to indulge in life-shortening pleasures. While the other patrons could enjoy their meals separate from those dastardly smokers, both sides could scowl at each other and sort of co-exist. In my perfect world, Oliver’s would offer a few meat options with real cheese and butter, and if that offends some sensitivities, we barbarians could be cordoned off with 19 – 26 October 2017

fans sucking away not smoke but all the fabulous aromas of roast chicken, a juicy New York steak, or chocolate soufflé with whipped cream. Until then, I’ll just have to wait for Renaud’s and Empty Bowl to open across the street.

Over the Hill

Several in the media have condemned ESPN for suspending SportsCenter host Jemele Hill after she said on air that Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboy owners were putting an “unfair burden” on their players by forbidding them from taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem, and that fans should boycott the teams advertisers. Ms Hill had previously tweeted that President Trump was a white supremacist. While in most cases an employee should be entitled to express his or her opinion on their own time, there are occasions when even off-the-clock politicizing is forbidden, and virtually no company allows its employees to engage in political activities on company time.

And why should they, if they believe it interferes with company objectives?

The big media corporations in this country highly regulate political activity by their staff members, many to the point that they are forbidden to be involved in any campaign, may not make contributions to any campaign or initiative, and may not be involved in any demonstrations. Consider this statement of policy from The New York Times, which extends to all employees: “Journalists have no place on the playing fields of politics. Staff members are entitled to vote, but they must do nothing that might raise questions about their professional neutrality or that of the Times. In particular, they may not campaign for, demonstrate for, or endorse candidates, ballot causes or efforts to enact legislation. They may not wear campaign buttons or themselves display any other insignia of partisan politics. They should recognize that a bumper sticker on the family car or a campaign sign on the lawn may be misread as theirs, no matter who in their household actually placed the sticker or the sign.

“Staff members may not themselves give money to, or raise money for, any political candidate or election cause.

Given the ease of Internet access to public records of campaign contributors, any political giving by a Times staff member would carry a great risk of feeding a false impression that the paper is taking sides.”

ESPN was entirely within its rights to suspend Ms Hill, just as Jerry Jones and Stephen Ross are within their rights to require players to stand during the national anthem. While big

media may argue that its restrictions on employees’ political activity is necessary to maintain the employee’s and the employer’s neutrality, can’t the same be said for members of a professional sports team? When a player takes up any cause while in uniform and especially during company time, any action or inaction by the team owner can indicate support or rejection of the cause.

During that period, it was customary to play “God Save The Queen” at the end of a movie. Everyone stood with their hands on their hearts until the tribute ended. I remember thinking that it was a significant way of instilling a little bit of patriotism into patrons.

Just a couple years after that, in London again, I attended another movie house and, as the film ended and “God Save The Queen” came on, people began rushing out so they wouldn’t have to stand until the song was over. Before long, the anthem was no longer played and a little bit of England disappeared with it. So, I hope that doesn’t happen here. – J.B.)

Fix It or Nix It

Will President Trump nix the Iran deal, and is Iran keeping its side of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action) agreement?

According to Aaron Klein of Breitbart News, there are many reasons why the president and Congress should get rid of this terrible deal. The top six are: 1. Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps has links to al Qaida, Hezbollah, and Palestinian terror groups.

2. Even before JCPOA, Iran cheated

on its nuclear program by violating the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, as well as other UN obligations. Caught in 2003 with traces of highly enriched uranium at Natanz.

3. Iran already violated the JCPOA agreement. In a letter to President Trump, it was revealed that Iran is: a. Covertly processing nuclear and missile technology outside of JCPOAapproval channels. (Direct evidence – German intelligence); b. “operating more advanced uranium-enrichment centrifuges than is permitted and announcing the capability to initiate mass production of centrifuges; c. exceeding limits on production and storage of heavy water, a substance needed to operate plutonium-producing heavy-water nuclear reactors; d. refusing to allow IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) inspectors access to nuclear research and nuclear facilities.

4. The IAEA cannot be relied upon to thoroughly inspect Iran’s nuclear sites.

Recent IAEA data show inspections have become less intrusive after Iran deal signed. (Dr. Olli Heinonen, former IAEA deputy director) 5. The issue of nuclear inspections is moot. Iran won’t allow inspectors into any military sites.

6. The nuclear agreement leaves Iran months away from obtaining nuclear weapons. The “sunset clause” under Obama means “ the breakout times would shrink to almost zero” when restrictions expire.

In conclusion, is it not time for President Trump and Congress to do what is in the best interests of America’s national security? Get rid of the JCPOA agreement and reinstate tougher sanctions on the terrorist nation.

ell, Peter Noone is no hermit, after all, he headlined this star-studded Fundraiser for Unity Shoppe at the Lobero, but he did get the name of his band – Herman & The Hermits and, eventually, simply Herman’s Hermits – from a contentious pub owner in England where he and his then-band, “Pete Novak and the Heartbeats,” were playing. Noone had put on a pair of thick eyeglasses in a parody of a Buddy Holly performance. The publican told Peter that he didn’t look anything like Buddy Holly, that he looked more like “Herman from the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show.”

The pub owner really meant Sherman, but the name Herman stuck.

It’s now “Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone”, and Peter and his group get together regularly: they fly in from all over the country and play some 100-plus gigs a year.

The Unity Shoppe, launched by among others, Pearl Chase, is cel-

ebrating 100 years of giving and Barbara Tellefson, who has headed the nonprofit for the past 45 years or so, credits Loggins for putting Unity on the map. “He gave us the greatest gift of all; he took the time to do our first fundraiser,” she says from the stage. Other local lights who’ve helped Unity Shoppe over the years, and whose photos grace the Chapala Street shop, include Michael Douglas, Jeff Bridges, Jeff Barry, Larry Crandell, Pierre Claeyssens, Herb and Bui Simon, Harold Simmons, Oprah Winfrey, Barry and Jelinda DeVorzon, Ann Abernathy, Alan Parsons, and many others.

Noone sounds exactly as he does on his original 1964 hit record, “I’m Into Something Good”, and when he ends the show with his biggest seller and apparently the fastest-selling record in history – “Henry The VIII” – one could play the original .45 and be baffled by the similarities. One may wonder, in fact: is it real (this is for the

Introducing the Hermits was comic Dennis Miller (who, along with Noone, is a Montecito resident); in the audience about eight rows back was Kenny Loggins; the San Marcos High School Madrigals serenaded and then backed up willowy and wonderful Lois Mahalia as she served up a soulful “Ave Maria”.

It was a sold-out full-house affair, and from the stage the intimate house looks exceedingly small, even with its 600-plus seats.

Wiesenberger (Nipper to his friends), exchanged quips and jokes, along with a trivia quiz, one of whose answers included the fact that the opening act for Herman’s Hermits on their 1967 U.S. tour was The Who. Tom Reed, Unity Shoppe executive director, brought out the entire Unity Shoppe staff (whose average length of time at Unity is 29 years), introducing each by name to a sustained applause that included whistles and hoots.

The hope, this year, says Tom, is to raise enough money “to get rid of the mortgage” on the building on Chapala Street. To that end, envelopes had been placed inside all the programs for the evening.

Miller introduces Noone as “a working-class hero,” but Peter stays backstage for some minutes as the band takes its places onstage. Noone is pacing back and forth, holding a note, preparing his voice. Just before going out to face the eager and impatient hand-clapping audience, he whispers with a wink, “I do this every night before the show.”

His 45-minute repertoire features “I’m Into Something Good,” Sam Cooke’s “Don’t Know Much About History”, “Love Potion Number Nine”, “Sea Cruise”, “Daydream Believer”, “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”, a couple of Beatles songs and more.

In between songs, Noone entertains with stories and anecdotes. Noting that he isn’t a recognizable celebrity,

he laughs and says, “Two people asked me if I was Nick Nolte... and one of the girls in the Madrigal Choir told her friend that I was “that lizard in the commercials.”

“If you can read the set list from this far away without wearing glasses,” Noone says as he squints down at the floor, “you’re not an original member of Herman’s Hermits.”

He apologizes to the crowd: “We’d usually go on for about three hours,” he says, “but they told me to get out of there in forty-five minutes because they’re going to close the gate at Birnam Wood at nine o’clock.”

The band goes country effortlessly and Noone does an impressive

impersonation of Johnny Cash singing “Ring Of Fire”.

Before doing his Mick Jagger impression, he confesses that his mother was Elton John and that his father was actually Mick.

Daughter Natalie Noone joins her dad onstage to sing “The Angels Are Crying in Heaven Tonight”, and Noone and the band close it out with “Henry the VIII,” the hardest-rocking of all his songs.

It’s not over until Barry DeVorzon sings his sing-along seasonal hit, “It’s Christmas Once Again In Santa Barbara”.

All Aboard Greene’s New Album

O

ur town’s noted blues-rock guitarist with his own band in 1997, Alastair Greene, is releasing his latest LP, Dream Train, Friday, October 20, and celebrating with a live concert locally.

Cutting his chops since he was 16, his 30-year love affair with music has taken him from here to the American heartland, a seven-year international touring gig with the Alan Parsons Project, and a few LPs along the way, such as his 2014 Trouble at Your Door.

This year, he’s decidedly back full time with his band and was on tour doing the Chicago Blues Festival and the Big Blues Bender in Vegas. A musician’s musician, he has dedicated Dream Train to them.

His band is formed in the tradition of Cream, ZZ Top, Hendrix, and early Stevie Ray Vaughn – it’s a trio, no fancy gimmicks, just pure, warm blues-rock sound with audible guitarbass-drums nuances and full enough to fill the room. It’s Alastair on guitar and vocals, Jim Rankin on bass and vocals, and Austin Beede on drums.

Special guests on the 13-song Dream Train LP is a pro-star line-up: blues-rock guitar icon Walter Trout on “Another Lie”, Debbie Davies on “Grateful Swagger”, Mike Zito on “Down to Memphis”, and Dennis Gruenling on “Daredevil”. On Hammond organ is Mike Finnegan. With 12 originals, and one unreleased-unrecorded single

by Billy F. Gibbons [ZZ Top], “Nome Zayne”, it’s more than a give-it-a-listen songbook. Mixed at Coyote Road Studios by Sean McCue, it’s also local proud. Topping it off, David Z., whose production credits include Buddy Guy, Gov’t Mule, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, produced and mixed 11 songs.

My assessment of the music: ear candy for certain. Solid. Clean production without losing the warmth and classic middle-blues jam, timed use of shredding and acoustic, excellent vocals blending. Enough variety in tempo and genre-bending to satisfy all level of blues listeners. CD packaging is kept environmentally minimum, or download it.

Having known me since back in the day, Greene called me to stop by rehearsal on Saturday to talk about his latest work, take a few band-at-work photos and, of course, that exclusive MJ interview: Q: The songs are all new?

A. Yes, all new – we recorded it all last summer, but since I was on tour

The LP release on Friday will be celebrated locally in a live concert at the Hong Kong Inn, Ventura, and Debbie Davies, who was on the LP, will be joining me. I’m excited about it. Come on down!

Where were you when you composed the songs here?

Songwriting’s weird because the topics can always be all over the place.

The title track came together like a bolt of lightning, it’s about why I feel, and a lot of musicians feel we are here, put here, is to play music – so, that song is a declaration, my purpose to play my music. I also tend to write about when people pass away; I write songs for them. The song “Iowa” dedicated to my dad’s mom and that part of the country, and the song “Song for Rufus” is about a stray cat who came by when we were cutting the album. I really bonded with him, he was full of love and brought that out in me, and is now passed away. I’m not a political artist or outspoken in politics, but one can’t help being affected by it, so some threads can be found in some of my work.

Why include one of Billy’s song?

David Z. loved all 12 of the songs I had for the CD, and he asked me to listen to some of Billy’s demos. We liked it, recorded it, and Billy gave his blessings. It’s different from the album, but it’s like us in a lot of ways.

Otter Pups at the Zoo

October 7 marked the birth of three Asian small-clawed otter pups at the Santa Barbara Zoo. The litter was the first for parents Gail and Peeta, and the first pups born at the zoo in six years.

According to zookeepers, Gail and Peeta are showing excellent parenting skills already, and are currently living behind the scenes in a holding area until they are old enough to safely swim and have grown teeth so

they can eat solid food. Depending on their development, keepers estimate the pups could go on exhibit as early as mid-December.

Gestation for these animals is 68 days, and after birth the female stays in the nesting box (or den, if in the wild) with the pups but is relieved by the male for breaks. The two were paired as part of a cooperative breeding program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Their names, inspired by characters in the popular Hunger Games books and movies, were given to them by their Santa Barbara Zoo sponsors Peter and Pieter Crawford-van Meeuwen.

Although this species is not listed as endangered, Asian small-clawed otters are seriously threatened by rapid habitat destruction for palm oil farming and by hunting and pollution. This species, the smallest otter in the world, lives in freshwater wetlands and mangrove swamps throughout Southeast Asia, including southern India and China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula. Unlike sea otters, they spend more time on land than in water, but according to zookeepers they are skillful, agile swimmers and divers, with great endurance. They can stay submerged for six to eight minutes. Full grown, the otters are about 2 feet long and weigh fewer than 10 pounds, less than half the size of North American river otters. Their claws do not protrude beyond the ends of the digital pads – thus their names – and their feet do not have fully developed webbing and look like human hands.

Zookeepers estimate that the family group may venture into their exhibit in December for swimming lessons in the small pool. By January, the pups should be proficient swimmers and on

New Trustees at Laguna Blanca The Laguna Blanca Board of Trustees welcomes three new members: Mary Morouse, Josh Connor, and Ann Levine.

Morouse spent five years on the Montecito Union School District Board, including two years as president. She is currently the board chairman at Mission Springs Camp and Conference Center near Santa Cruz, California. After graduating from UC Berkeley, Mary joined Xerox Corporation as an education sales specialist. She transitioned into UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management to earn her MBA – paying her tuition by competing and winning on game shows Super Password and Win, Lose, or Draw.

After a summer internship at Apple Computer, she joined Microsoft in 1989. There, Morouse led teams to market Microsoft Project and Microsoft Access. Escaping the rain of Seattle for the sun of Santa Monica, Mary moved south to manage the Norton Group at Symantec. The pull of the Northwest called again in 1998, and Mary returned to Seattle to join a startup bookstore called Amazon as vice president of merchandising. It was on this second stint in Seattle that she met her husband, Jim. After the birth of their first child, the Morouses – both native Californians – moved to Santa Barbara in 2001. They have three children, two of whom attend Laguna Blanca, Ava (Class of 2019) and Jack (Class of 2020). The Morouse family has traversed 49 out of 50 states in various minivans.

For approximately two decades, he has been a leader within the transportation industries, having been an investor, a key strategic advisor, lender, and leading banker to many transportation companies around the world. Prior to founding Connor Capital, Josh was a managing director and co-head of the Industrials Banking Group at Barclays, a position he was appointed to in October 2013.

In August 2015, Connor was elected to join the board of Frontier Airlines, a private airline controlled by Indigo Partners. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Copa Airlines, a member of the Morgan Stanley Investment Banking Management Committee, and the Board of Trustees for the Morgan Stanley Foundation (Finance/Investment Committee).

Connor is a graduate of Williams College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He has previously been a trustee of The Pingry School in New Jersey and a board member of Youth, INC, a New York City-based nonprofit helping children.

Connor and his wife, Patricia, live in Montecito with their three children, Lily (Class of 2022), Jack (Class of 2024), and Abigail (Class of 2028), all of whom attend Laguna Blanca School.

A Cut Above Staffers at Richie’s Barber Shop on Coast Village Road are putting their crimping skills to good use to raise monies for victims of the horrendous Las Vegas massacre.

The six barbers at the salon are banding together on Wednesday, November 1, the day after the shop celebrates its seventh anniversary, with all the money raised from haircuts and tips donated to the cause.

All in the Family Ensemble Theatre Company opened its latest season with a world premiere adaptation of Woody Allen’s 1992 innovative film Husbands and Wives, just the second of his many movies to be adapted for the American stage.

A witty and urbane comic-drama, the show directed by artistic director Jonathan Fox, follows two couples, facing middle age squarely in the face, who find themselves questioning their faltering marriages, gloriously played

by Gabriel Marin, Lesley Fera, Alicia Sedwick, and Douglas Dickerman.

Adding to the excellent effect is the use of a video feed that allows the audience to see the action from innumerable angles, including in the wings.

Emily Goglia, Nicholas Santa Maria, Emily James, and Jeff Lorch complete the wonderful New Vic cast.

For Woody fans, it’s a must.

It runs through Sunday, October 22.

Shirley, She’s Worthy After nearly four decades volunteering for the 118-year-old Family Service

Agency, Shirley Ann Hurley was lauded at a president’s circle reception at the charming Summerland oceanside estate of Suzanne Duca and Ross Quigley.

Last year, the agency, which has a $6 million annual budget, helped 13,000 families and last July joined forces with the Santa Maria Valley Youth and Family Center, where another 25,000 families will be helped.

“We address immediate needs and give essential tools for increased longterm self-sufficiency and empowerment,” says Lisa Brabo, executive director.

“Shirley Ann has spent more than 37 years volunteering, as a community advocate, board member, and fearless fundraiser. Through her work, she has made a positive and lasting difference to thousands of lives in Santa Barbara.”

Among those turning out for the sunset soirée were Anne Towbes, Sheila Lodge, Maryan Schall, Sybil Rosen, Larry and Kathy Taylor, Chris and Dori Carter, Garrick and Pam Lewis, Brian and Joanne Rapp, Steve and Cindy Lyons, Scott and Kohanya Groff, and Jim Hurley.

Author Edie Littlefield Sundby is a woman on a mission!

After enduring 79 treatments of aggressive chemotherapy and several major surgeries at Stanford University Medical Center, she walked her way back to good health to the amazement of her doctors.

Ten years ago Sundby, who was suffering Stage 4 gallbladder cancer, was given three months to live, but didn’t throw in the towel, accomplishing several lengthy walks, including the northern segment of the Historical Mission Trail from the Mission in San Diego, where she lives, to the Mission in Sonoma – 700 miles in 55 days four years ago.

Two years later, even though her cancer returned, she walked the remaining 700 miles of El Camino Real from its origin in Loreto, Mexico, back to San Diego, which took her two months.

Now she has written about the rejuvenating experiences in The Mission Walker, which she launched with a bijou bash at Tecolote, the lively literary lair in the upper village.

“Walking is healing,” says Sundby. “I do it for spiritual, physical, and emotional reasons. I hike four miles daily in Torrey Pines Canyon near my home.

“I want to sweat the chemo. Walking is the only way I survive. It heals me physically. I can pour out my emotions, my fear, my despair. If it can’t kill our spirit, it can never kill us.”

Thomas said, that audiences come away from the piece with strong emotions and the urge to challenge authority and corruption. “He thought of theater as a place of confrontation and transformation rather than merely entertainment and illusion. His style is challenging. I think people will really enjoy the play and it is highly entertaining. But his goal was that people leave the theater inspired to act.”

Brecht often employed slides or placards to denote location and used projections to inject real-world applications, Thomas said. He wanted to entertain them, but also break the illusion of theater and never let them forget that the play is about you and me and the world and how we engage.

To pay homage to Brecht’s sense of jolting the audience, Thomas is employing a little push-pull of his own, beginning with casting a female in the lead role and using three visual languages, including slide projects, abstract colors, and images and a character who is also a videographer creating a live feed that will also be projected on the stage. That’s in addition to a cast of 16 and a live seven-piece band on stage.

“We’re really pushing ourselves to put on this big show, and it’s a difficult technical process,” Thomas said.

“Hopefully, it will end up being a beautiful and engaging mess.”

However it turns out, Ui will be a success if it gets people on the Christian campus talking about the themes, Thomas said. “It’s about reminding us that we have to take a hard look at ourselves, pay attention to what’s going on, and stand up and resist if necessary. I hope that resonates on campus and beyond.”

The Payne Event

England-native David Payne was already in his 50s, a marketing consultant in Tennessee, when he decided almost on a whim to audition for a bit part in a play about C.S. Lewis because the casting notice said British accents were helpful. But the director wanted him to actually step up and play Lewis in the title role, launching a whole new life for the then non-actor in portraying the Oxford University professor, novelist, and Christian apologist (Mere Christianity) who also wrote the classic children’s book The Chronicles of Narnia.

important people in his life, including his wife, his famed Oxford colleague, J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as God. Set in Lewis’s home in Oxford in 1963 shortly before he died, Lewis discusses his life in front of a group of visiting American writers, represented by the audience. The piece comes to the Marjorie Luke Theatre on Saturday afternoon. Payne talked about it over the phone recently.

Q. How much does religion play a role in the play?

A. It’s not a sermon in any way, shape, or form. But the play is about his life, and Christianity was a big part of it. But he was also a great humorist with a very wry sense of humor. His stepson said, “You couldn’t be in a room more than five minutes with C.S. Lewis without there being a lot of laughter.” That was who he was.

He shares anecdotes, the fun parts, as well as the deeper aspects.

How has your relationship to Lewis changed over the years?

When I started doing research for the play (back in Tennessee), I found him totally interesting, from his writing to his theology. I was touched by quite a few things, mostly how his faith was tested after his wife died.

I was very taken with that. But even now, I’m still moved by how humble he was, and generous – he gave away most of his book royalties. He was very sincere, and a good example of how we should act.

What do you want people to come away with?

People come for different reasons, and they’ll leave with different reactions, all of which is okay. Some will want to start reading his books, or go back and re-read them. Others might have had similar experiences of having their faith tested and want to focus on that aspect of his life. But for me, when people leave, I want them to turn to each other and say, “It felt like I was in the room with CS Lewis.”

Long Story Short

Dee Elias knows full well the frustration of never getting to see your movie up on the big screen. The Santa

Barbara resident, a former American Airlines flight attendant turned filmmaker and author, shot a nine-minute-long short film re-enactment of the climactic scene from her book Confessions of a Beatlemaniac, which chronicles her teenage obsession with The Beatles that included using fake press passes to meet three of the four Mop Tops at a hotel near her home in Cleveland in 1966. But the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) didn’t accept the film for its Santa Barbara Shorts program, and while Elias was able to screen the short in Cleveland, she was unable to get it shown locally.

So, she created her own event: The Backyard Shorts FilmFest. The one-day extravaganza featuring 35 local short films from Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties takes place this Sunday afternoon at the Hitchcock Theater, formerly Plaza de Oro, which has been renovated and now features a bar and food service.

“I realized how much time, effort, money, and stress is involved to complete a film, even one that’s under 10 minutes,” Elias said. “And how disappointing it is when you don’t get to actually show it on a big screen to friends and family. I wanted to give an opportunity for locals to show what they’ve created in their own community.”

The rules for entry in this first fest were simple: each film had to be no longer than 20 minutes, and fit into at least one of the six categories, including narrative, animated, student, music video, documentary, or experimental. “And no violence or scary thrillers, so we could be family-friendly,” Elias said. “Some are new, some were made a few years ago. It didn’t matter if you’ve shown it elsewhere, although nothing has screened at SBIFF, as long as you’re a local filmmaker. They’re all so excited to get their movies shown in a theater.”

Elias and her team selected 36 shorts to screen on Sunday, separated into four sections each approximately 90 minutes long. Among the documentaries are Montecito residents Jeff Bridges and Alan Kozlowski’s walking tour through the latter’s

“Making Music” photographic exhibition at SOhO Music Club, as well as Kozlowski’s On the Path Tibet, a tone poem of imagery from Tibet and Bhutan edited to European Choral Music. The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network is also represented, as is Moninda Marube, a Kenyan runner who was human-trafficked to the U.S. by an unscrupulous agent.

Santa Barbara singer-songwriter David Segall’s Godspeed is the official music video for the title track of his 2016 EP, while Bruce Gombrelli and Keresey Pearl also have entries in that category.

With 36 films of varying length and content on the schedule, Elias decided to augment the screenings with some non-cinematic fun. So, a professional comedian serves as emcee, while local musicians will perform during the breaks. Meanwhile, just like at SBIFF, the filmmakers will have a chance to talk with the audience after each screening – but just for a firm two minutes. “We have a way to get them out of there on time,” Elias said. “If you want to ask them questions, you can catch them outside during the breaks.”

As for Elias’s Confessions of a Beatlemaniac, the short uses local actors to re-enact the afternoon when the 16-year-old Elias and her friend brazenly broke rules to work their way into The Beatles’s hotel room, where they met John, Paul, and George, then got kicked out before finding Ringo.

“It’s just a fun film that’s like the Cliffs Notes of what happened that I write about in my book,” Elias said. The actor who portrayed Paul will be at the screening – but he won’t have to sneak in.

Q. Are you a fan of these old show tunes?

A. Oh, yeah. I only started playing guitar and doing rock, blues, and folk music about two years ago, right after I moved to Santa Barbara. I’ve only been writing my own songs for the past year or so. Before that, for years I did musical theater. I always love singing those show tunes. It’s a lot of fun.

Your Santa Barbara profile has really taken off since Teen Star. What stands out?

That whole night is still very fresh in my mind. It was unbelievable. It opened a lot of doors for me in Santa Barbara, not only to the talented people who live here, but to the whole

energy around the music scene here that’s incredibly cohesive. You can really dive into it if you look in the right places.

You’ve certainly done that, what with opening for Kenny Loggins and performing with Jim Messina and others, plus creating your own benefit concert to raise awareness about your auto-inflammatory disease, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS, which causes formation of abscesses on the skin).

I feel so lucky to keep having these opportunities to work with all these great musicians. And they always seem so excited to work with me and show me the ropes. In those shows at SOhO, I did a few songs that I’ve written that I’d never played for anyone other than my parents before. It was great.

It’s a busy week in classical music in Santa Barbara, even 10 days past the final passing of the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. Camerata Pacifica gets things going on Friday evening with its second concert of the new season at Hahn Hall, a self-described “gentle program, bathed in beauty.”

But not at first. After Ani Aznavoorian reprises last season’s performance of Carl Vine’s “Inner World” for cello, tape, and video projection – about as modern a work as they come – the veteran principal cellist will be joined by percussionist Svet Stoyanov for Bill Kraft’s “In the Morning of the Winter Sea”. Agitation dies away for the final pair of pre-intermission pieces, a marimba transcription of John Cage’s Erik Satie-influenced “In a Landscape”, and Osvaldo Golijov’s cello and marimba work “Mariel”.

Post-intermission, oboist Nicholas Daniel teams with harpist Bridget Kibbey to play four of Mendelssohn’s “Songs Without Words” before the concert closes with David Bruce’s Camerata-commissioned “The Consolation of Rain”, featuring all four musicians.

You’re also giving a talk at TEDx Santa Barbara next month: “It All Started With Bob”. That’s a curious title. What does it mean?

That’s the secret of the talk. But I can tell you that what I hope to do is to bring HS out of the dark. It’s a very under-diagnosed disease. The average time from first symptoms to diagnosis is seven years. I was lucky; it only took 3, although I’ve seen about 30 doctors. I’ve got to memorize the entire 18-minute presentation, so I have to put songwriting and recording demos aside to really cram for the TED talk, since I was only asked to do it about a week ago when the executive producer – who wanted me to do a few songs – realized I had some things I could talk about that would really be worth hearing. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19 Blizzard of a Book Tour – Eddie Izzard’s keenly intelligent humor ranges from world history to historical politics, the absurdity of sexual politics, and sometimes just the absurd, like jazz chickens. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 Biden His Time? – There are no specifics topics of discussion for what’s being billed as “An Afternoon with Joe Biden”, the 47th U.S. vice president who served two terms with President Obama after six full terms and 36 years as a U.S. senator from Delaware. The once and perhaps future presidential candidate has had to deal with a number of personal tragedies (including deaths and addictions in his family) to become one of the country’s most enduring leaders, with a career that has been focused on global cooperation, human health, and violence prevention. As a senator, Biden authored the landmark 1994 Crime Act and the Violence Against Women Act – which perhaps has a timely ring in light of the recent Harvey Weinstein news – while as VP, he oversaw the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, chaired the Middle-Class Task Force, oversaw the Obama administration’s Skills Initiative and led the efforts to implement meaningful reforms to reduce gun violence. Since leaving the White House, Biden has created the Biden Foundation, the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Biden Institute for Domestic Policy at the University of Delaware, while the former VP and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, have also founded the Biden Cancer Initiative. Back then, while the subject was somewhat timely, the Village Voice’s take was that The Foreigner is “a constant invitation to relax and laugh at the foolishness of life.”

Hopefully, in our post-9/11 polarized world with even the United States imposing immigration bans, we can still laugh at the absurdity of the situations while perhaps taking the underlying message a bit more to heart as Nita Davanzo directs DogStar Theater’s production at the Center Stage Theatre this weekend.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 The Blues Brothers – Sings Like Hell founder/producer Peggie Jones, who left Santa Ynez for Austin more than a decade ago, has been based in Texas for more than half of the astonishingly long run of the singer-songwriter subscription series that began back in 1996. Yet, she still scours the city and region on a regular basis to find up and coming acts worthy of greater exposure – one of the tenets of the concert series since its inception.

The latest Austin act to make their Santa Barbara debut is a young one, indeed – the Peterson Brothers, comprised of 21-year-old guitarist-singer Glenn Jr., and his brother, bassist and vocalist Alex, who is all of 18. Despite their tender years, the boys have already have some accomplishments to their credit, including winning the Living Blues Critics Award for Best Debut Blues Album of 2015 for their self-titled debut. (Do the math: Alex was no older than 16 when it was recorded). The Peterson Brothers, who put their own spin on a blend of blues, soul, and funk, hold a standing-room-only weekly residency at Austin’s famed music hall The Continental Club – they played on October 16 and will be back this coming Monday – and have also played gigs across the land, including at the Chicago Blues Festival, Minnesota State Fair, and Riverbend Festival. Mini Estates under $5 Million

T

his year so far, home sales in Montecito have remained relatively on track with the past few years (some years had more sales, some years had fewer), and the average and median sales prices for Montecito remain strong. This, of course, refers to homes that have sold, not the price of homes currently on the market.

One segment of the Montecito real estate market I often focus on is what I call the “mini estate” property. This area of the market in Montecito is generally priced now between $4,000,000 and $8,000,000, and frequently with a mini estate, one can enjoy many of the amenities offered in the $10,000,000+ crowd, but for much less money.

This usually translates to smaller square footage and less land than a fullblown estate, (1+/- acre instead of 3 acres for example, or a 4,500-sq-ft home as opposed to 8,000+/- sq ft for a larger, substantial estate home). At this under-$5million estate price point, amenities can include a swimming pool, spa, guesthouse, privacy, gated entrance, ocean views, a prime spot on a top street, and more. Today’s featured properties all offer multiple amenities and options.

615 Hot Springs Road: $4,585,000

This unique property is located on a prime Montecito street and is within minutes of local restaurants, shopping, and the beach. Designed in the California ranch style, the main residence was constructed in 2008 and features an open floor plan with high-vaulted ceilings, French doors, and bright skylights. The chef’s kitchen features a large island, top-quality appliances, and custom Alder Wood cabinets.
