Frank Hotchkiss for Mayor

T

here isn’t anyone running for mayor of Santa Barbara that we’d rather see in office than Frank Hotchkiss. We’ve been fans of his since he first hit the campaign trail some eight years ago, and he has not disappointed nor backtracked. The busy councilman joined me for a short sit-down at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Coast Village Road recently, and I came away convinced even more so that Santa Barbara really needs this guy at the helm.

The first thing I asked the termedout city councilman was to prove that City councilman Frank Hotchkiss is our choice for mayor of Santa Barbara he was “of sound mind.” He laughed and quickly shot back, “Well, I’ve already proven I’m not of sound mind, because I do want to be mayor of Santa Barbara.”

Kidding aside, he observes that, “You start these things and the more you get into them, the more you realize what the potential is, what the value is. One thing that has really become apparent to me,” he says, “is the reputation of this city nationwide, and to some degree worldwide... if you’re in Davenport or Des Moines or Dallas, and somebody asks where you’re from and you say, ‘Santa Barbara,’ this is instant recognition.

“And, just look at the physical setting,” he continues. “We have four-thousandfoot mountains that come rolling down to a sparkling ocean, with a Europeanstyle village or city at the bottom, a regional airport serving three-quarters of a million people a year, a brand-new waterfront – the Hotel Californian is wonderful – a great Funk Zone, and on top of that, cultural amenities that rival those of cities ten times our size: six museums, a botanical garden, three theaters, our own zoo, and weather that is the envy of every city in the country. We really are,” Hotchkiss notes, “the pre-eminent small city in the United States, and I think the principle or first function of a mayor is to preserve that, to keep the jewel – if I can put it that way – glistening and shiny.”

Frank’s background is public relations and marketing (and real estate). “I’m the guy who brought the cruise ships here,” he says. “They were coming at the rate of two a year when I started. I suggested we might do better, and now we have twenty-nine this year.” There have been, in fact, 150 cruise ship visits (and tens of millions of dollars spent by over 100,000 passengers at small businesses throughout the city) since Frank was elected to the council. He was also a national anchor on CBS, a commentator on ABC Network News, gossip on The Joan Rivers Show and Geraldo Rivera, host on E! TV, a correspondent on the syndicated show Extra, and a commentator on the KTLA Morning News. He moved to Montecito ten years ago.

V talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres is obviously a fan of Montecito tony twosome Tom and Heather Sturgess.

Four years ago, she bought international interior designer John Saladino’s Italianate 6-bedroom, 6-bathroom Villa di Lemma on 13 acres for $26 million from the couple and recently listed it for $45 million.

The dynamic duo originally bought it for $16 million from John, who now lives in Birnam Wood.

Now, I can exclusively reveal, she and actress companion Portia de Rossi have snapped up Rancho San Leandro, the 3-bedroom, 4-bathroom Ennisbrook estate, including an 1850s adobe, owned by the Sturgesses for $7,195,000, which was originally listed for $8,225,000 and reduced to $7,995,000.

t’s that time of year! On Tuesday, October 31, thousands of costumed kids and their parents will descend on Coast Village Road (a.k.a. Ghost Village Road) for Montecito’s annual trick-or-treat extravaganza. Supported by the newly resurged Coast Village Association (CVA, formerly Coast Village Business Association), the event is expected to continue its legacy as a popular destination for area kids.

The annual trick-or-treat event was originally organized by the CVBA, but took on a life of its own over the last few years when the non-profit business organization unofficially disbanded. According to CVA president Bob Ludwick, the event has been going on for at least 30 years.

“We expect it to be a fun and popular event, and we intend to make it as safe as possible,” Ludwick said. “Coast Village merchants can’t wait to see the kids in their costumes!”

The event draws roughly 2,000 costumed kids, parents, and pets each year, who make their way from Montecito Country Mart to Olive Mill Road. Most of the lower village’s business owners will take part in the festivities, passing out candy and other treats to trick-or-treaters.

New this year: the CVA has partnered with Direct Relief International, and several “donation stations” will be positioned on the road in an effort to garner donations for hurricane relief. “With all of the natural disasters happening in our country and the world right now, we’ve decided to ask the community to give back to those in need while enjoying Halloween,”

Ludwick said. Volunteers at the donation stations will be UCSB students from Phi Lambda Ro, a newly formed sorority at UCSB nicknamed “Las Rosas,” who focus on children in our community. Parents are encouraged to bring cash or checks made out to DRI and drop them in the donation stations to help with Hurricane Relief in the south and in Puerto Rico. The goal is to raise $3,100 for DRI, on the 31st. There will be stations set up at Montecito Country Mart, K.Frank, Los Arroyos, Calcagno & Hamilton (near the Honor Market), Jeannine’s Bakery, and the newly remodeled 1187 Coast Village Road.

Also new this year: Here’s the Scoop owners Bob and Ellie Patterson will not be holding their popular costume contest, as in prior years. Given their move from the larger space downstairs at 1187 Coast Village Road to a smaller location next to Giovanni’s, the contest is no longer feasible, Ellie tells us.

“It seemed like a natural time to move on from it, but we still look forward to seeing everyone’s creative costumes!” she said. The Pattersons will still pass out their famous “Worms ‘n’ Dirt” gelato, as always.

Safety is always of utmost importance, especially so due to the construction taking place on the corner of Coast Village and Olive Mill.

Volunteers from the City of Santa Barbara’s Police Explorers, a program for youth aged 14-21 who are interested in a career in law enforcement, will be on hand during the event, helping attendees safely traverse the road and

hat good news! There’s not enough room in the Coral Casino, so we’re moving across the street to the Monte Vista lawn at the Four Seasons Biltmore.

There was a tent to accommodate the 450 folks who wanted to attend the Gold Ribbon Luncheon given by

the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF). As auctioneer and emcee Andrew Firestone said, “This is record attendance in their 15-year history.

They have already raised $265,000 toward their campaign.” Gold was selected as the color of the awareness ribbon as it represents a precious

metal and our children are precious.

Premier sponsors were Jeffrey and Margo Baker Barbakow, who have been involved for 10 years. She introduced the executive director Lindsey Leonard, who told us what Teddy Bear does: “We help support families when they have heard the dreaded words ‘Your child has cancer’ by paying bills for rent, utilities, car payments, hotel accommodations, gas,

groceries, and childcare.” Many times, one of the parents has to quit their job.

Teddy Bear has helped 165 families this year and 1,928 individuals in their 15 years with awards of $1.85 million.

They give to Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties.

It all began when Angela King had a friend whose child, Jeffery, was battling leukemia. After seeing what Teddy Bear did for him, everyone pitched in. The Pay It Forward Award went to the Solodon family. The family began receiving support in 2003 when their 16-year-old daughter, Becca, was diagnosed with cancer. Founder Nikki Katz coordinated for Becca to participate in a studio singing session.

It was so successful, she got to sing with Mariah Carey at the Arlington Theatre. Her mom had to quit her kindergarten-teaching job during Becca’s long recovery. Mom still volunteers in many ways. Becca is now the organization’s program director. She has been with Teddy Bear for 10 years.

Becca’s dad has been there all along the way as well.

Of all the events I attend, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many paddles raised as there were at this luncheon.

Andrew threatened the audience, “If you don’t all raise to donate, the valets won’t give you your car back.” It must have worked. The hard-working co-chairs were Lacy Taylor and Kathy Kelley along with Hal Price.

Some of those attending the fete were Sheela and Mark Hunt, Gary Caesar, Aaron Clark, Travis Wilson, Natalie Grubb Campbell, and Renee Grubb.

Arts & Lectures Opening

UCSB Arts & Lectures had a powerhouse season opening with the appearance of Lila Downs at the soldout Granada. Downs has a past as dramatic as her three-octave vocal range.

She is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez, who ran away from her village at 15 to sing in Mexico City cantinas, and Allen Downs, a University of Minnesota professor.

Lila grew up in two countries and claims them both. She studied classical voice and cultural anthropology at the University of Minnesota, and she has been influenced in many ways especially by the ancient cultures that inspire her. She has fans that span a wide spectrum of ages, races, and backgrounds.

Lila has been traveling for 20 years and sings blues, jazz, rock, rap, and more. She also sings in both Spanish

by males, many of whom are difficult to deal with. I learned to become strong and stubborn.”

Lila has been invited to sing at the White House and performed at the 75th Academy Awards ceremony, doing an Oscar-nominated song, “Burn It Blue”.

To make the Granada opening more special, an hour before curtain in front of the Granada appeared the Chinelos of Santa Barbara and Southern California and Grupo Folklorico de UCSB. These groups wore Mexicaninspired costumes, so colorful, while dancing to live music. When Lila saw

Real Estate View Montecito Heat Index

T

he Montecito Heat Index is a snapshot of demand for single-family Montecito homes in five distinct price sectors. Rather than a measurement of completed sales referred to as lagging data, the Heat Index looks at homes currently under contract resulting in leading data and a more accurate picture of today’s market demand. And as real estate markets are seasonal, and vary monthly, today’s demand is compared to this date last year. All data are from the Santa Barbara MLS and uniformly deemed reliable.

Today’s Heat Index registers a collective 103, 145.6% above a year ago and 30.3 % above last month.

The $1-2M group continues to lead as the sector most in demand with a strong showing of 43, nearly doubling last year’s score of 25.

As the chart demonstrates, we are enjoying a well-balanced, upward-moving market with all sectors meeting or outperforming last year’s demand. The $4-5M group is showing particularly strong demand with our second-highest score of 25.

This is reinforced by a 20% increase in homes currently under contract and a 9% increase in median price to $3,050,000. By contrast, the National Association of Realtors just reported that the Western U.S. region’s sales increased 3.3% and the median sales price increased 5%.

We are enjoying a strong seller’s market, and as we close in on the end of the year it looks like we will see even higher numbers. That is assuming the stock market makes it through the next two months without a major correction. This time of year has never been a favorite of the market and it is enjoying record-high levels. Montecito buyers have never much cared about interest rates. They do care, however, about the stock market – a lot.

Crane Fair this Sunday

Crane Country Day School’s annual Country Fair takes place Sunday, October 29, from 10 am to 3 pm, on Crane’s campus at 1795 San Leandro Lane. Each year, Crane families, faculty, staff, and students eagerly anticipate the fair, for a day full of entertainment, amusement, and food, as well as the opportunity for the Crane community to teach the Santa Barbara community at large more about the school’s approach to learning and education.

The fair includes such activities as bounce houses, a dunk tank, dart throw, bungee run, sponge toss, and human foosball, as well as Cake Walk, face and hair painting, a photo booth, a petting zoo, and sack races. Gourmet fare from the Carpinteriabased Food Liaison will be available for purchase, and the Crane Country Kitchen will offer a bevy of home-baked goods, sweets, and savories, with fresh produce from local home gardens, including Crane’s own.

For Crane seventh grader Lulu Marsetti, the event isn’t just about fun and food; it’s an opportunity for her to help out. “Of course, the fair is fun, but I also love the fair because I get to help build the haunted house,” explains Lulu. “We get to do everything – build the props, make a pathway, hang lights, we even distress the costumes,” she said. Under the guidance of Erika Sellin, Crane’s Technical Theater supervisor, Lulu and a cohort of her fellow students transform the school’s field house into a spooky scene that’s just creepy enough to delight the kids.

Lulu’s younger sister, Crane fifth grader Silvie Marsetti, looks forward to the fair for her own reasons. Silvie will spend a large part of her day selecting and playing tunes for the Crane Cake Walk. The sisters’ dad, Bino Marsetti, has been the fair’s volunteer coordinator for the past few years, ensuring that a small army of parent volunteers keep the various and sundry booths staffed throughout the day.

“Not only is the Country Fair an opportunity for Crane to connect with and showcase for the outside community all that Crane has to offer, this year, it’s also an opportunity to show how our Crane students give back to the community at large,” says Susan McMillan, who, along with fellow Crane parent Missy Ryan, is co-chairing the event for the second consecutive year.

As part of their seventh- and eighth-grade years, Crane students take a class called Service Learning, where they explore various local and global concerns and explore philanthropic paths to help address them. For the first time in fair history, Crane’s Eighth Grade Service Learning class will host a booth of its own, designed to highlight the non-profit projects they’ve selected. This year, those include a food drive for the Unity Shoppe; volunteering at Head Start Preschool and Storyteller Children’s Center; sponsoring students in Luanda, Kenya; and fundraising for the Malala Fund, which supports girls’ access to education in Middle Eastern countries. The Long Goodbye

I

n an uncommonly brave gesture, the following hand-written letter was personally signed and delivered to the American public on November 5, 1994, by former U.S. president Ronald Reagan: “My Fellow Americans, “I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.

“In the past, Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had my cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We are happy that as a result many more people underwent testing.

“They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.

“So now, we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.

“At the moment, I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life’s journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.

“Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes, I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.

“In closing let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with

Alzheimer’s Luncheon

On Wednesday, November 8 (fittingly, one day after election day), the late president Ronald Reagan’s daughter, Patti Davis, will be the scheduled keynote speaker at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Fourth Annual “Your Brain Matters” luncheon held at Fess Parker DoubleTree Resort.

Patti Davis’s will, no doubt, honor her father but she’ll also catalog and discuss the difficulties and repercussions of caring for an Alzheimer’s patient. “As a witness,” she writes in her new book, The Long Goodbye, “all you can do is watch, cry, and whisper a soft stream of goodbyes,” as the dis-

In The Long Goodbye, Ms Davis makes no secret of the rocky relationship she had with her father; he was, after all, of a different political persuasion: “I used to be so angry,” she writes. “...I missed so much, let so many days roll by, not realizing how fast they were going, and now they’ve come back to ache inside me.”

She writes poignantly of watching her father diminish, even in height; whereupon she always had to look up to him – he once stood at 6 feet1 inch but had shrunk to the point where she could look at him directly.

She is 5 feet-10 inches tall. “He’s being whittled down,” she notes, “trimmed, reshaped by a disease that has its own blueprint.”

Patti’s description of the president’s death is heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time: “My father looks straight at my mother, holds onto the sight of her face for a moment or two, and then gently closes his eyes and stops breathing,” she writes. In the next paragraph she adds, “The room is quiet except for soft weeping; my mother whispers, ‘That’s the greatest gift you could have given me.’”

Ms Davis’s talk, I believe, will be one you will not want to miss. You’ll probably want to pick up a copy of her book too.

Twilight on the Pacific

United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) held its annual Red Feather Ball and lit up the Pacific literally, for its theme “Twilight on the Pacific”. We had cocktails and conversation, plus a silent auction on the terrace of the Coral Casino. As the sun set, the spotlights came on over the ocean.

children and families.” They improve their skills one to two grade levels, and it was the winner of the National Excellence in Summer Learning Award by the National Summer Learning Association.

Then there is the United for Literacy (UFL) to improve high school graduation rates. There are three components: parent engagement, access to books, and online literacy programs.

To carry out this program, community volunteers serve. These two programs combined reach 5,000 disadvantaged Santa Barbara children and families.

The Red Feather Ball raises about $250,000 each year to sustain FITS and UFL. My husband, Don, has fond memories when he worked for Raytheon

and headed up the United Way campaign for his company – the largest contributor in Santa Barbara at that time.

Longtime friend Bob Montgomery gave Maryan her Abercrombie Community Excellence Award.

Besides her many accomplishments, she even went back to school for her Ph.D. after raising four children.

In her acceptance speech, she was promoting a group called “Women United “ which is in six countries and has raised $1 billion since 2002 to help women. She concluded by saying, “If you haven’t already heard from us first, you will surely hear from us.

ers, federal agents from the FBI, Secret Service, and other agents and prosecutors with whom I worked were some of the finest men and women I have ever known. They were uniformly intelligent, ethical, hard-working, and dedicated to the pursuit of justice.

Many remain close friends.

So, what is Goodell saying? Do the players believe the Ferguson lie, “Hands up. Don’t shoot?” Have the players taken the time to read Heather Mac Donald’s comprehensive statistical study of police officer shootings of unarmed black men?

As the players drive to the stadium in their shiny new Bentleys, they apparently don’t consider the breakdown of the family and the consequential crime and black-on-black shootings in the inner cities. A Journal reader has also outlined the extensive arrest records of these kneeling NFL players.

Marine colonel Jeffery Powers, in a letter published in Montecito Journal (“Real Americans Part IV”, MJ #23/37), compellingly explained the distinction between the military heroes, who fought for our freedom, returning home with the American flag draped over their coffins and these spoiled brats who refuse to stand for the flag.

I am done with the NFL, which in the past I enjoyed. I hope the special tax breaks and subsidies received by the billionaire NFL owners are abolished. This is not a battle between the players and the president. This is a division between the heartland of America and the anti-American culture. Unfortunately, the commissioner and the NFL owners did not listen to the fans and Bob Hazard.

The NFL will deserve the consequences.

The Measure C Scam

There is a “C” in a four-letter word.

The word is scam. Measure C is estimated to raise some 22 million dollars per year. There is no doubt our roads need repairs. But, there is no assurance that money would be used for them. Of course, some of it will be but the rest is anybody’s guess.

The average local [resident] might complain a touch about paying more on purchases, but the poor adding a 13% increase is going to be a burden.

And yes, adding one cent onto 7.75% is about 13%.

Finally, it is forever; I might have voted yes on “C” if it expired in two or four years like many political positions. That would be like being disappointed in a politician and not being able to vote him or her out of office.

Utility Futility

The cause of the horrific fires in northern California are being investigated. The primary suspect is fallen utility poles in high winds. Montecito is strangled by utility wires from poles planted between shrubs and trees.

The last high winds we experienced here caused a blackout and thousands of dollars in damages that Southern California Edison refused to take responsibility for. God forbid if it were a fire. We all know the expense in burying the lines, but they should be underground as a safety issue. Our local government should be working with SCE

Not Impressed

I just read the letter from John Jaeger in Irvine (“Loves Those Letters”, MJ #23/42) and aren’t impressed by his critique; some of his other writing too... A question mark belongs at the end of his “May I add –” sentence?

His next two sentences aren’t particularly lucid, either.

I hate to say it, but Trump could pass not just as a ringmaster, but circus clown. The faux pas come almost daily.

The latest are (again) putting his foot in his mouth regarding the La David Johnson incident after it occurred; wanting broadcasters who don’t like him silenced; even former president Geo. W. Bush has spoken out against him. Nothing to do with either Hillary or Obama, per Mr. Jaeger.

Noting J.B.’s Bill Handel-New York Times “agenda” remark [Editor’s note to “B.S. is as B.S. Does”, MJ #23/42], I’m wondering what his is: To convert or placate locals into becoming rich Republicans, so they can buy the expensive stuff advertised in the MJ? Just wondering...

I’ll go out on a softer note: If we can’t enact an appointed president-manager-type system, then I suggest Ashleigh Brilliant run for office on the Literary Party ticket.

The Age of Everything

L

et’s face it: beyond a certain point, most things, and most people, do not improve with age. There are, of course, exceptions.

And it’s possible to improve in one way, while declining in another. But even wine, whose improvement with age is almost proverbial, may improve over years or decades – but certainly not over centuries.

But what about species? What about evolution? Is that not a kind of overall improvement, with the worst being eliminated and the best surviving?

With all our imperfections, aren’t we, today’s generation of Homo Sapiens, the best, most advanced form of life that has ever existed?

But who is to say what really constitutes “improvement?” Isn’t that a moralistic concept, depending on what you think of as “good?” Bigger or stronger is not necessarily better – and smaller or weaker isn’t necessarily worse. In fact, the Law of Averages seems to tell us that every measurable distribution of qualities tends to cluster around the middle, and trail off at the extremes – the old familiar “bell-shaped curve.”

So, as far as mathematics is concerned, it appears that there is no improvement with age, or with anything else... But who says mathematics has to be our only guide – or any guide at all? What about common sense, and intuition, and spirituality? And why can’t we look at every change as simply being part of a cycle, with no real beginning or end?

Aging, however, is surely no illusion.

We see it in others. We feel it in ourselves. Some process is going on within us which is hard to like, to enjoy, to consider beautiful or desirable – or even to understand. Dylan Thomas told us we should “not go gentle into that good night.” We should instead “Rage, rage, against the dying of the light.” His own light died when he was only 39, but he’d already done plenty of raging (much of it while drinking.)

I am now more than twice that age.

Which reminds me of Tom Lehrer’s remark, concerning certain great geniuses: “It’s people like that who make you realize how little you’ve accomplished. It is a sobering thought, for example, that when Mozart was my age, he had been dead for two years.”

But determining how old things are isn’t always easy. To tell the age of a tree, you can count its rings – but, for accuracy, this requires first cutting 26 October – 2 November 2017

down the tree – or patiently waiting until it dies a natural death.

Fortunately, you don’t have to kill a horse for that purpose – you can tell by inspecting its teeth. (Hence the familiar injunction against ungratefully looking a “gift horse” in the mouth.)

To tell your own age, you have a birth certificate. Such registration is now actually guaranteed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which also states that, having been born, you have the right to a name and a nationality. You are also required by law, at the appropriate time, to have a death certificate – of course, you will never get to see it.

Determining how old things are isn’t always easy Many other ages can be determined by a technique that revolutionized archaeology, called Carbon Dating, first developed by Willard Libby, a chemist, in the 1940s. Its main limitation is that it only works with organic material – i.e., things that were once living. So, it’s of no help at all in answering the biggest question of all, which of course is on everybody’s mind: WHAT IS THE AGE OF THE UNIVERSE? For many years, the chief authority on this subject was considered to be James Ussher, archbishop of Ireland, who in 1650 published a “Chronology” in which he somehow calculated, from Biblical sources, that The Creation had taken place at 6 pm on Saturday, October 22, 4004 B.C. In view of such certainty, it always amazes me that modern scientists have had the audacity even to pursue the question any further. But, yet more amazingly, they have actually come up with their own answer – and, give or take a few million years, they are all more or less in agreement on that answer.

Based on the speed at which everything appears to be flying apart from some fixed point, they now tell us that this process must have begun about 14 billion years ago.

So, now that we know the age of everything, is there really any point in our being at all concerned about how old we ourselves seem to be getting?

Both Sides, Now: Duo Together Again

N

early half a century after their brief but fiery love affair imploded, folk-pop singer Judy Collins and folk-rock star Stephen Stills have reunited for an album and tour. The disc, Everybody Knows, from the song by the late Leonard Cohen – whom Collins first encouraged to perform publicly and who in turn encouraged Collins to compose – contains several songs from their respective catalogs (Crosby, Stills and Nash’s [CSN] “Questions”; Sandy Denny’s “Who Knows Where the Time Goes”, which Collins covered on an early album), a few other chestnuts (Tim Hardin’s “Reason to Believe”, Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country”), and even a new song or two.

Collins and Stills – they first met in the late 1960s when Stills was leaving Buffalo Springfield to form Crosby, Stills and Nash while Colllins was riding high after her hit cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” – are now both long past age 70. But they’re also out on the road for a tour to promote the album, which stops at the Arlington Theatre on Saturday, October 28. Collins talked about the relationship and the record over the phone from her home in New York earlier this week.

Q. Why has it taken almost 50 years for you and Stephen to record and tour together? What was the impetus to make it happen now?

A. Both of us always had a lot on our plates. He was in CSN, and there was me and my “big career” (laughs).

We had to sort out what our destinies were and pursue them vehemently.

But because our friendship has grown over the past 10 years, we decided to take a shot at it. His commitments have eased up a bit, and he was open

to the idea, as was I. So it felt like the right time. Sometimes things just take awhile.

I read that the impetus was when you both performed at an A.A.R.P. convention. That must have been a wake-up moment.

That’s right! We were in Orlando.

We looked at each other and said, “Hey, maybe this is the time, while we’re still here and healthy.” That’s a big thing.

Your romance was less than a couple of years, but the friendship has endured.

What was the relationship like, and why didn’t it work out?

Let’s just say it was too hot to handle. It was very passionate and full of all kinds of pitfalls. We were both on the verge of our careers. I’d just had the top 10 hit with “Both Sides Now”, and he was just going into CSN. There was too much pressure to sustain a romance. So I came home to New York. We always kept talking to each other, never lost track. We were always in each other’s pockets, even if we were no longer having an affair.

We’ve always just been very connected. Stephen always said the reason we can be good friends is that we married other people. It’s true.

How was it to have all of that chronicled on “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”, which became such an iconic song? What did you think

the first time you heard it, and how has that evolved over time?

I was always in love with the song.

When he played it for me, I cried. Then I said, “It’s beautiful, but it’s not going to get me back.” It was just very clear that our relationship was not going to work. It’s still such a poignant song.

We decided to end the shows with it now, but he said, “I don’t want to sing the first two verses because they’re so mean to you.” (Laughs). I don’t see it that way. I just thought he must have been reading my journal. But I always loved the song. I still do. I always hoped I could sing it. And now I am!

How did you decided which other songs to record for the album, and to do on tour?

We texted back and forth for years, and sent emails before we got more serious a couple of years ago. He brought “Handle With Care” (the Traveling Willburys), for example, and I wanted to do “Everybody Knows”, which I recorded by myself after Leonard Cohen died as a way to pay tribute to him and acknowledge what’s going on in the world. We did “Houses”, which I wrote back in the early ‘70s as my return shot over the bow to “Judy Blue Eyes” because we wanted to have that history and reciprocity. The only rule was that we both had to love the songs.

I think we’ve constructed a show that works really well. It’s almost two hours, but it goes by really fast. We do the big songs that both of us have had, plus the ones that have been partnerships over the years. We have a good time.

I played the album on repeat four or five times the other day. You guys sound amazing together! Was that a surprise to you too? And why do you think you collaborate so well?

I guess we must have had some sense of that. But we were pleasantly surprised to find out how well our voices blended. We just keep learning as we go, and it keeps getting better the more we sing together. Also, I really love being the second guitarist

in a rock ’n’ roll band. Never got to do that before.

You’ve always been an accomplished interpreter of other people’s songs. What do you look for, what attracts you to want to cover someone’s else songs?

It was never anything special or specific. It just has to hit me in the gut.

It’s a very visceral thing. I just have to love it when I sing it. That’s how it becomes a Judy Collins song. I just sing it. That’s how it comes out.

On the other hand, I read where you wrote a song a day for a whole year in 2016. What’s happening with all that material?

I’m slowly recording it, cleaning them up, and moving on. One of them is the one that’s on the new album with Stephen. Some will be in a book of poems. Writing daily is now a habit, like a work challenge. I love to see what comes out. I wrote a song about Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I’m having a lot of fun with it.

You’ve been an activist your whole career, dating back to when you testified and sang at the Chicago 7 trial. Do you still interested in that aspect? Can music still make a difference?

It makes a difference to support the causes you believe in. You have to take part in democracy any way you can – give money, make phone calls, whatever. And these days, of course, we have to resist, we have to do whatever we can. It’s who I am, and how I was raised, so I still do, and will, as long as I’m on the planet.... We sing “For What It’s Worth” every night, not that people don’t already understand which side we’re on.

Whether the Weather? (Part I)

aving just returned from a lengthy trip to Greece, Italy, Croatia, England, and other parts of the world, I was given pause as to the state of the weather.

It was hot. Very hot! In some places, setting records not seen in the last 50 years or so. Of course, all the typical pundits immediately jumped on the political climate bandwagon, pronouncing doom and disaster in the not-too-distant future. Oceans will rise by at least a meter in the next 10 years, according to the wellversed, well-quaffed spokesperson on CNN. There will be millions of deaths due to crop failure, shouted the British BBC network, and the continued production of man-made pollutants will bury us all in a soup of poison that will certainly lead

to the oblivion of mankind as we know it!

Doom and Disaster

These totally uneducated pundits are mostly driven by corporate “social

ic, weather, and atmospheric changes.

However, one need not go back more than 10 or 20 thousand years to get an idea of the drastic climate changes that have occurred. Most of the earth was covered in ice only 12 to 15,000 years ago. In fact, you only need to go back a few hundred years to observe dramatic changes in the Earth’s weather.

At the end of the American Revolutionary War, the Earth was just recovering from a Maunder sunspot-induced mini-ice age that had lasted in varying degrees for nearly 500 years. task is easy. Just print the menu for the day, and hand it to a bunch of well-groomed, quasi-educated talking heads.

I’m reminded of all the financial wizards on CNBC who always seem to know everything about the financial markets after the fact, but in reality, are still no more than financial disc jockeys, spinning the “tune” of the day.

If they are so great at their jobs, why aren’t they rich? They still have to get up at 4 am for makeup and have done so for the last 25 years. It is easy to lead ignoramuses. Hence the term. Hardly any of them, including the corporate heads, have ever read even one science-based treatise on weather causes or effects.

We also returned to tropical storm

Harvey, which was of high interest to my partner and me, as we own no fewer than 10 commercial properties in the storm zone. Properties in the “eye” of the storm were in Corpus Christi, Texas; others were in Houston, Galveston, and Texas City. Our properties suffered almost no damage… all having been purchased in 200-to-500year floodplains, with flood insurance just in case. Others were not so lucky … or so careful. Why do they call them 500-year floodplains? Well, duh… about every 500 years or so they flood. The same reason they call most of Houston as being in 25- or 50-year floodplains. Because every 25 to 50 years, it floods. Big surprise.

Of course, we are all going to pay for the rebuilding of these properties right back in the same floodplains so we can pay for it again, both financially and emotionally, in another 25 or 50 years hence. Much akin to those who rebuild their house on the same Malibu slope after it slides down the hill from the predictable 20-to-30-year “unusually heavy” rainstorm. Human nature is truly un-knowable. Why aren’t they required to buy flood insurance if they live in a flood zone? I feel sorry for them, but what about self-responsibility? When they buy a house in Texas, the title company is obligated to tell them they are going to live in a flood zone and they must sign an acknowledgement. Hello… are they listening… can they read?

A Revolutionary Era Ice Age The Earth has been around for some four-plus billion years, and has certainly gone through some radical geolog-

Go back a few hundred years earlier, and you will find that one of the most successful wine-growing regions in the world was in a warmish northern England, and even Scotland.

Those climes were very much suited to high-volume predictable wine grape production because of the warm climate. Now, that temperature rise could certainly not have been brought on by man-made industry. There wasn’t any industry to speak of except the burning of wood campfires and animal dung and a few iron forgers. The population of Earth was about five percent of present-day numbers. Get a modern-day environmentalist pundit to explain that rise in temperature.

Whoops.

That period was the approximate start of another Maunder-type sun cycle that heralded the beginning of the 500-year mini ice age that started to end about 1800. The year 1816 became known as “the year without summer” when nearly half of the crops in the U.S. failed. The already lower temperatures were given a little boost by the volcanic eruptions, causing about another 0.5-0.7-degree Centigrade estimated drop in temperature over much of the Earth for over a year.

Single-Use Plastics

I don’t know whether or not most of your readers know, but at the Montecito Association Beautification Committee meeting last week, I was shocked to learn about plastic and the amount of it we’re using one time and throwing away in a single use, from one of our members who is also a “staff member” of the Community Environmental Council.

We discussed distributing water bottles at our cleanup day, thus the discussion, and now plan to have hydration stations instead. Their “ditch plastic” campaign should be widely publicized. Such plastics can be bottled water, carrier bags, food containers, straws, et cetera, and sadly over half those products are for single use… and the usage has increased 20-fold in the last 50 years. Think of the effects on the ocean and our environment. Definitely something to think about, and if you would like to know more, you might check their website at www.csb.org.

Good Riddance, Harvey

Whoever said “The bigger they are, the harder they fall,” must have had people like Harvey Weinstein in mind.

For decades these media moguls have preyed on the young people of both sexes, who flock down to Hollywood in droves with stars in their eyes hoping they will be the next big star,

or at least get a bit part to see them through until they do hit it big. They work menial jobs such as waitresses or waiters to pay the rent et cetera, and pay the exorbitant dues to the Screen Actors Guild, in order to get a SAG card in order to land a job. Weinstein’s downfall is, in my opinion, one of the greatest things that could have happened to get the subject of these type of creeps and their behavior back into the national narrative. I am hoping his downfall will just be the beginning of what is potentially an avalanche.

Even now, there is an effort to shape the narrative as one of fear conquering all. And while that take may apply to the “little people,” such as aspiring actresses, or those directly employed at Weinstein’s various companies, it rings exceedingly hollow for the likes of prominent celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck (who now has his own groping scandal to deal with), and many others. It rings even hollower for prominent politicians. Hillary Clinton waited five days before deciding she was “shocked and appalled” by Weinstein’s behavior, even as she said nothing about the funds Weinstein bundled for her 2016 election campaign. Bill Clinton, who received contributions from Weinstein for his legal defense fund when he has his own “issues” with sexual predation, has said nothing.

But as Jeb Bush communications director Tim Miller aptly noted, “Hollywood and the Democratic Party tend to look the other way when there’s misogynistic behavior exhibited by people who contribute to Democratic causes.”

In other words, money, not fear, trumps principles.

Feminism has taken a fatal hit as well. Actress Ashley Judd, who helped break the story, epitomizes the hypocrisy that engenders selective indignation. The woman who excoriated President Trump in front of an adoring crowd of pink female genitalia hat-wearing fans during her speech at the Women’s March on Washington last January, based on what Trump said during a private conversation with Access Hollywood co-host Billy Bush in 2005, maintained silence about what Harvey Weinstein did for two decades.

Judd’s not the only hypocrite. A media currently congratulating itself for breaking the story also avoided the conversation when it suited their purposes. The same New York Times that broke the story last week had a version of it back in 2004, courtesy of former Times reporter Sharon Waxman.

She put together a story about a man running Miramax Italy whose real job, according to sources, was procuring “favors” for Weinstein. After pressure from Weinstein, who also enlisted actors Damon and Russell Crowe to lobby on his behalf, “the story was gutted,” Waxman explained.

Rebecca Traister is another columnist who reveals why Weinstein’s odious track record remained under wraps. “Back then, Harvey could spin, or suppress, anything; there were so many journalists on his payroll, working as consultants on movie projects, or as screenwriters, or for his magazine,” she writes.

Entire networks were apparently also part of Harvey’s “entourage.”

NBC, for example, passed on the aforementioned The New Yorker report.

Weekly Standard columnist Lee Smith believes the only reason Weinstein was exposed is because “the media industry that once protected him has collapsed.” In fact, he says, “Facebook and Google have swallowed all the digital advertising money that was

supposed to save the press as print advertising continued to tank.”

No doubt. But it is also possible we are witnessing the beginning of a paradigm shift in the national ethos.

President Trump’s election was about many things, but one of the biggest was about millions of “deplorable” Americans being fed up with being held in progressive contempt. Trump’s victory also revealed the ideological bankruptcy of the “smart set,” from their insufferable arrogance, to their endless assertions of moral superiority and tolerance.

And it could get even worse for leftists because their biggest mistake, hopefully fatal, is believing millions of Americans will continue to tolerate being totally immersed in a pool of self-serving virtue-signaling currently contaminating every entertainment venue from football games to awards shows. Virtue-signaling pitched by an army of progressive Hollywood hypocrites, Democrat hacks, and media frauds now revealed as the confederacy of cowards they truly are.

The bet here is Weinstein won’t be the only lowlife held to account.

Shubert Sonatas Still Beguile Berkowitz

Veteran UCSB piano professor Paul Berkowitz began recording all of Franz Schubert’s important piano works by starting at the end, committing the last three piano sonatas to vinyl way back in 1984, when he was just halfway through his earlier tenure on faculty at Guildhall School of Music in London. But while the pieces have long been part of his repertoire,

he’s never performed all three of the works on the same program.

Now that the nine-CD Schubert series is about to be completed with next month’s release of Berkowitz’s recording of the famous Impromptus, Moments Musicaux and other repertoire, the pianist – who studied with Rudolph Serkin and in turn served as one of Thomas Ades’s main teachers – is returning to the Sonata in C minor, D. 958, Sonata in A Major, D. 959, and Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960. He’ll be performing them sequentially in recital at 3 pm this Sunday, October 29, at Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West. Berkowitz, who will repeat the program next month in London, talked about his relationship to the once under-appreciated, now beloved works.

On revisiting the pieces with 33 more years of experience: “It’s almost like fulfilling a pledge to myself. I guess it was a little pretentious for me to record them back then, but I was always drawn to these great spiritual works.... I didn’t go back and listen to how I played them 30 years ago while I’m still working on them now. But I don’t think it’s changed all that dramatically, except I do think more about how to make the beautiful sounds on the piano. But I think it actually gets harder, not easier. You’d think it would just fall into place, but instead you get more particular.

On playing the three pieces together in order: “They build on each other, so it’s the only way to do them. They have very different moods with some linking between them. The main thing is that the mood of the first one is quite dark and stark, the second is very hopeful and positive and energetic, and the third is very serene. Did he know

he was going to die a few months later? I don’t know. But he was an early Romantic who often wrote about death. So was he absorbed or did he know it was coming? I had these thoughts way back then, and they’ve only become deeper and more subtle and more enriched.”

On making his Hahn Hall debut: “I’m really looking forward to it!

It’s such a beautiful acoustic hall, and now they have the wonderful new Steinway made in Hamburg. I tried the piano a few weeks ago, and it’s beautiful.”

take credit for all those port visits – Ms Schneider certainly had a hand in it – but Frank was instrumental in moving that program along. “I swung at the ball and happened to have hit it out of the ball park; that’s what happened,” he explains.

As for his reasons for wanting to become mayor, Frank says he “would like to be the ‘Marketing mayor’ of Santa Barbara.” To that end, he says he has close ties to Japan, and with sister cities there and in China and the Philippines, he believes a market push in Asia could produce some positive results. “On the local level,” he adds, “in order to prime the pump I would do what the Chamber of Commerce has failed to do, which is to attract just a few good anchor businesses all along State Street.”

Like what, I wondered.

“The first one I would ask after the election is that Mr. [Angel] Martinez (who is also running for mayor) open a flagship Deckers store in the four- or five-hundred block of State Street. That’s the kind of thing that could attract more shoppers and more local businesses, that could really make it a destination they’d be happy to go to.”

Hotchkiss believes State Street has been unfairly maligned and that businesses aren’t leaving the area. “The fact is there are about twenty places about to open; they’re in the permitting process. People say, ‘Oh, I would never go down to State Street and walk around.’ And they’ve never been there and have no idea what it’s like. I don’t see it that negatively. I see young families and little kids all over the place, so I think its [poor] reputation is undeserved.

We discussed the future of La Cumbre Plaza area, and Frank suggested that free-market forces could and likely will bring new life to that area, that when the new construction at State and Hitchcock is done, La Cumbre “could become a kind of uptown downtown that residents could walk to and embrace.”

Water and Taxes

Hotchkiss is the only city councilmember opposed to the 13.5% rise (or “one cent” hike) in the sales tax and suggests there may be a legal challenge if passed. “It’s unrestricted money, and it goes [right into] to the general fund,” he laments. “It comes to twenty-two million dollars a year. That’s a lot of money to put into anybody’s hands, mine, or any politician’s.”

Hotchkiss also points out that no matter what anyone says the money will be used for, “this council has a lifespan of two months,” and a new council could

override whatever the previous councilmembers had chosen to spend it on.

“The pretense,” he warns, “that we’re raising this money for whatever is stated is exactly that: a pretense. It’s a tax from here to eternity because there is no sunset clause on it. It’s a forever tax.”

Another priority is water.

“Although a mayor doesn’t have any control over Cachuma water,” he notes, “the idea of pouring hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of gallons of water into the Pacific Ocean to no one’s benefit, except maybe that of a few fish, seems like not a good idea.” He says he’d strive to change that water diversion “from the Pacific to people.”

Most of the things that may come up over the next few years, Hotchkiss says, “are over the horizon,” making it difficult to pinpoint what immediate priorities may be. “That is to say, whatever our priorities are now, it’s likely something will change that. Parking meters and RVs that were parked along Cabrillo Boulevard became issues. Who saw that coming?” he asks.

Another thing he never saw coming was when the Parks & Recreation Department decided it would be a good idea to pave the natural pathways in the Douglas Family Preserve. Hotchkiss and fellow councilman Randy Rowse agreed that staff members “were out of their minds” and got that project shut down.

Hotchkiss’s responses to unforeseen developments are likely to be more rational than many others’. “You want to vote for someone whose judgment you trust,” he says. “I think that’s the approach you should take when voting for anybody.”

On the homeless proliferation: “If I had my druthers, we’d go and invite every transient to leave town if they didn’t behave. But of course, you can’t do that, so the next best thing is to try to increase badge or police uniform presence. People tend not to act in an uncivil fashion when there’s somebody with a badge nearby. We’re always going to be a destination on the hobo highway and there’s no way to get around that, so controlling bad conduct is probably the best way to do it.”

We believe Frank Hotchkiss’s rational and accommodative presence on the city council will suit him and Santa Barbara City residents well for the next four years.

So, we strongly recommend you vote for Frank Hotchkiss for mayor in this election. And, while you’re at it, vote a big fat “NO” on Measure C. •MJ

Understanding Montecito

The Coast Village Road Master Plan

The Future of Coast Village Road

Montecito has always envisioned its Coast Village Road (CVR) business district as its hometown Main Street – a nostalgic gathering place for its residents and visitors to shop at locally owned boutiques, relax and unwind at inviting cafes and bistros, celebrate special occasions, and meet old friends and associates. CVR has a distinctively different character from its next-door neighbor, the beautiful City of Santa Barbara with its more urbanized State Street and La Cumbre Plaza business districts.

In 1960, Broudy sold his Hot Springs/ Coast Village Road corner to Ray Conners, Jr. who then developed the Coast Village Road Shopping Center, now Montecito Country Mart, adjacent to Vons. Broudy purchased other properties along Coast Village Road and began the push for a Business District Master Plan.

It was Broudy who proposed the two-lane road with its landscaped islands featuring an interior frontage strip with angled parking, as well as the wooden Coast Village Road signs at each end of the business district. An assessment district was established and improvement bonds were issued. Coast Village Circle was carved out of portions of Butterfly Lane, Depot Road, and Spring Road. It took eight years for Broudy to realize his vision of Coast Village Road as a planned and coordinated “village road” rather than a hap-hazard highway stop.

Looking back, it is remarkable how the efforts of one motivated man created a coordinated signature look for the lower village’s business district.

The Way We Were. The History of Coast Village Road. Annexation of Old Coast Highway CVR had its beginnings as both a pit stop on the Pacific Coast Highway and a neighborhood road connecting Hot Springs and Olive Mill. In its early years, its to the City of Santa Barbara businesses consisted of a couple of gas stations, some overnight tourist courts like the Captain’s Motel, and miscellaneous eateries with long-forgotten names like the Somerset, Dinah’s Shack, and Helm’s Bakery.

The first paving of the Coast Highway in Montecito was completed in 1922.

In 1927, when the State Division of Highways proposed widening of the Coast Highway, John A. Jameson, chair of the County Planning Commission, proposed a unique plan to maintain a central thoroughfare that would carry Route 1 travelers through Montecito, while local residents could bypass traffic using local frontage roads.

Jameson led a crusade to buy land contiguous to the existing Coast Highway, in order to create California’s first scenic parkway, using beautifully landscaped central medians. Billboards were permanently banned. In 1928, a row of eucalyptus trees was added to the roadway, adding to its aesthetic charm.

In 1930, Santa Barbara County’s first director of planning, Leon Dunning Tilton, endorsed the John Jameson “Montecito Parkway” concept, noting, “the opportunity exists to create a distinctive type of highway, one that will be unusually safe, efficient in the accommodation of traffic, and as fully delightful in appearance as any narrow lane in the [Montecito] community.”

The Montecito Parkway

In 1937, the first part of the Montecito Parkway was completed from San Ysidro to Olive Mill Road. Following WWII, work was completed on the rest of the highway. The Montecito Parkway became a model for successful town planning nationwide.

Unfortunately, the original Montecito Parkway was short-lived. In the 1950s, the four lanes of the parkway were converted to freeway standards to carry through traffic from west of the Andre Clark Bird Refuge to Olive Mill Road, and later on to Sheffield Drive and beyond, bypassing the business district of Montecito.

The Architect of Modern Coast Village Road: Sherrill Broudy

The birth of the current version of Coast Village Road dates back to 1956, when Sherrill Broudy, a 34-year-old WWII Navy veteran, an alumnus of UCLA, a designer architect, and a former college roommate of Eli Luria, arrived in Santa Barbara and began buying real estate. He first designed and built the nine-unit Old Coast Highway Apartments behind the present Starbucks. In 1958, he sold the apartments and purchased the corner lot at Hot Springs Road and Old Coast Highway, which contained a dilapidated motel, a plant nursery, and a run-down cottage. The thrifty Broudy moved into the cottage and used one of the motel rooms as his office.

Broudy’s genius was that he envisioned the future CVR business strip as needing a master plan and an architectural rebirth to create “a gentrified village look.” In April 1960, he formed the Old Coast Village Association, naming himself as president, to draft a master plan intended to “relate the various properties along the then-Coast Highway to the entire Montecito community.”

According to his biographer Steven Gilbar, Broudy assured the president of the then Montecito Protective and Improvement Association (the forerunner of both the Montecito Association and the Montecito Planning Commission) “that I will do everything possible personally to improve the appearance of the Coast Highway area.” He started by encouraging fellow property owners along CVR, such as Matt Cannon to paint his Target Liquor store all white, while arguing that neon signs were outdated and tacky.

In 1960, short-sighted Montecito voters turned down a bond proposal for a Montecito Sewage Treatment plant to replace septic tanks in Montecito.

Terrified business owners along the Coast Highway, whose septic systems were overflowing, unhealthy, and malodorous, turned to the City of Santa Barbara for annexation because the City promised to add a sewer line to the business district of the lower village of Montecito.

The Montecito Sanitary Business District was formed in 1947, but it was not until 1961, a year after the City annexed CVR, that William H. Joyce, Jr., then-president of the Montecito Sanitary District and his board, contracted for a study with Stanford Research Institute to plan and design a new sewage treatment plant for Montecito. The treatment plant was completed in 1961, funded by $3.1 million in revenue bonds. Here was a classic case of too little too late, in what has become one of the worst blunders in Montecito history.

The result of City annexation of a vital strip of Montecito has meant that Montecito permanently lost its planning and zoning control over the heart of its business district. If the City decides to allow increased density on CVR, or higher building heights, or higher sales taxes, or hotel taxes to boost its tax revenues, that’s it. If the City decides that a new Olive Mill roundabout is needed at “the Gateway to Montecito,” that’s it. If the City decides that a re-opened southbound entrance ramp to the 101 at the Hot Springs/Cabrillo intersection is not needed, that’s it. If the City decides Montecito could use a pot shop or two to generate more tax revenues, that’s it.

Despite annexation by the City of Santa Barbara, Coast Village Road remains Montecito’s shopping heart and business soul. Historically and psychologically, CVR belongs to Montecito. CVR’s customers come from Montecito. Its water comes from Montecito, but its sewer service comes from the City of Santa Barbara, a tragedy that never should have happened. CVR, our village business district, was high-jacked by the City because of our own short-sightedness – and yes, our stupidity as a community.

Changing the Name from Old Coast Highway to Coast Village Road

Immediately following City annexation, Broudy petitioned the Santa Barbara City Council to change the street name from Old Coast Highway to “Coast Village Road”. The Santa Barbara Planning Commission rejected the name change, calling it “awkward” and noting “that there was insufficient justification for the name change because it was already well-known within the City.”

City planners argued that “the business district of Montecito was no longer a village, but a part of the City, and therefore there was no community benefit to the name change.”

According to biographer Gilbar, on May 13, 1960, the name change was passed unanimously by the Santa Barbara City Council over the objections of its planning commission for “reasons lost in the mist of time.”

Enough about the Past. What about the Future?

The challenge for Coast Village Road is to envision a successful future for its property owners, its shops, its eateries, its businesses, and its residents by harnessing the strengths of a new generation of community leaders to entice government and the residents of Montecito and Santa Barbara to invest in its long-term success. The beloved image of a picturesque semi-rural village, with tree-shaded roadways, is under continuous assault. No place is more vulnerable than Coast Village Road and its companion, Coast Village Circle.

Going Gospel Celebrities galore were crawling over Oprah Winfrey’s East Valley Road estate when she hosted her annual gospel brunch.

Bowling Buffet It was certainly back to the future when the Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls Club celebrated its 80th anniversary at Spencer Adams Park.

Products that were launched in 1937, including Spam, Krispy Kreme donuts, Pepsi Cola, Dr. Pepper, and Dad’s root beer, were all part of the buffet lunch attended by mayor Helene Schneider and supervisor Das Williams.

“We thought it appropriate given the year,” explained the club’s PR lady Bonnie Carroll. “Hormel even donated the Spam, which was a nice gesture.”

Farewell to Fess With the DoubleTree dropping the Fess Parker affiliation and becoming the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort in due course, it seems there are no hard feelings among the late actor’s family.

Fess, who played frontiersmen Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone on TV, opened the beachfront hostelry in

1986 and died seven years ago.

The hotel is to undergo a total multi-million-dollar renovation with a projected completion date of next year.

Fess’s daughter, Ashley, tells me she and her brother, Eli, think their father would be “good with the decision.

“The renovation and rebranding will serve to upgrade the overall experience and help the property achieve its maximum potential.

“The one-hundred percent family-owned Fess Parker Winery and Fess Parker Wine Country Inn will continue to bear his name.”

Just Biden His Time Former vice president Joe Biden packed the Arlington, with hundreds more watching a simulcast at Campbell Hall, when he spoke eloquently as part of the popular UCSB Arts & Lectures series.

Another speaker at the forum was MFPD’s Wildland specialist Maeve Jaurez, who discussed MFPD’s Fuel Treatment Network, 199 acres of land that is maintained through chipping, vegetation removal, and groundwork in order to limit the spread of wildfire. MFPD also maintains evacuation routes, ensuring that a car trying to leave a neighborhood can safely pass a fire truck going in the opposite direction. Thirteen miles of cleared evacuation routes have been completed this year thus far. The District also has a roadside hazardous fuel reduction program, which funds fire hazard abatement projects along community roads in High Fire Severity zones. Jaurez reminded forum attendees that the District will help homeowners located in the District assess their properties at no charge.

MFPD’s Public Information officer Joyce Reed and Santa Barbara County’s Office of Emergency Management director Robert Lewin discussed emergency notifications and stressed the importance of subscribing to notifications through the

Wildland Urban Interface Fire: With fire being our most likely disaster, Taylor gave a history of various fires that have impacted Montecito in the last six decades. Six hundred and fifty structures and homes have been lost in six fires in our area from 1964 to 2009. The District recommends that all residents utilize the “Ready, Set, Go” preparedness plan (further details can be found at www.montecitofire.com), create defensible space and “harden” your home, and evacuate immediately when ordered to or when you feel unsafe.

In all of the above-mentioned disasters, a 72-hour emergency kit and fresh water is recommended for preparedness. MERRAG president Sue Ziliotto discussed disaster kits; a list of what should be included, as well as a link on where to buy one, is listed at www.merrag.org. Ziliotto recommends including copies of sensitive documents, in waterproof storage, with your emergency kit. She also discussed taking photos of every room and closet in your home, to have an inventory of your belongings for insurance purposes in case your house burns down.

Lewin reported that in an emergency, a multitude of alerts will be put in play depending on the situation, including WEA (wireless emergency alerts), door-to-door evacuations, and Aware & Prepare messages, as well as emergency updates on local media and social media. The District has a radio station, AM 1610, but is no longer using the HEARO radios system it once relied on. “The board is actively trying to find a replacement system,” Chief Hickman said.

The forum also included an interactive Q&A session, with members of the public asking questions about evacuating, Edison lines, the fate of Fire Station 3, and more.

Vandalism at Lucky’s

In the early morning hours of October 22, Lucky’s on Coast Village Road was vandalized when a suspect threw three boulders through two windows and the glass door, causing shattered glass throughout the bar of the restaurant. “It was an act of vandalism, with nothing stolen,” reported general manager Leonard Schwartz.

Surveillance footage of the suspect and her vehicle was turned over to the Santa Barbara Police Department, who is reviewing the footage.

The eatery is open as usual, with the glass expected to be replaced this week.

“We are just happy that no one was hurt in the incident,” Schwartz said.

CAMA As You Please CAMA – Community Arts Music Association – kicked off its 99th season in grand style with the 126-yearold Chicago Symphony, under iconic Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, who were last here 30 years ago, packing the Granada for its third visit.

Principal clarinetist Stephen Williamson, who was formerly with the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, was the star of the show, playing impeccably during Mozart’s concerto in A Major, following the opening work, Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor.

The entertaining concert concluded with Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C Major.

Oh, Wellness The Mental Wellness Center, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary, hosted its 7th annual lunch at the Carrillo Recreation Center, with the 250 guests expected to raise around $200,000 for the nonprofit, which helps 4,000 people annually.

For the fifth year, culinary wizard Michael Hutchings catered the lunch with guests pledging “investments” to the charity in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, which goes toward the $3 million annual budget.

Annemarie Cameron, chief executive officer, and Andrea Carnaghe, chairman of the board, emceed the event with two students, Emily Steidl from San Marcos High and Elias Mochel of Carpinteria High, singled out for their support with their Youth Wellness Connection Clubs on their campuses.

“All of the passion and funding we need to make these investments for

our youth to have a better chance of a fulfilled life are met with sobering realities of those who suffer needlessly today, simply because they are unable to get better without a safe place to sleep,” said Cameron.

Among the tony throng were Henry Glasheen, Christy Morse, Kristin Kirby, Marion Cooper, Ned Emerson, Rachael Steidl, Ted and Shandra Campbell, Tom Franklin, and Chad Hine.

We All Scream for Gelato Chilling out at La Cumbre Plaza for the first annual gelato festival, a perfect day as the temperatures were forecast to hit a toasty 90 degrees.

Eleven gelato makers from Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, and the U.K. competed to show off their wares, and I was there to get the scoop.

Gelato has the benefit of having less fat and cream than ice cream and can be served at warmer temperatures, giving it more taste.

The promotion, with enticing flavors such as Vegan Pink Pear and Ginger, Roasted Green Tea with Crunchy Mango, and Maiz Dulce Borracho, has already been in Boulder, Colorado,

Brooks Firestone and Merryl Snow Zegar join Center for the Performing Arts board

Brooks Firestone and Merryl Snow Zegar are new board members at the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts, which owns and operates the venerable Granada Theatre.

Affable Brooks served two terms in the California State Assembly and one term as a Santa Barbara County supervisor.

Zegar, a law graduate, has an extensive legal background in New York and is currently executive director and trustee of the Zegar Family Foundation and a member of New York City’s City Center Board.

She and her husband, Charles are bi-coastal, living in Montecito and on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

On the Money The State Street courtyard of Santa Barbara realtor Renee Grubb’s Village Properties was socially gridlocked when The Teacher’s Fund celebrated its 15th anniversary, raising nearly $10,000 for the cause.

To date, more than $1.5 million has been donated to the county’s elementary, middle, and high school teachers in public and private schools.

Renee and the company’s co-owner, Ed Edick, created the fund in 2002 to give back to the community they serve.

ess than a month before Barbara Marx Hubbard launches a new video series called “What’s New In You?”, the evolutionary storyteller and visionary is returning to Montecito – her former home of many years – this weekend to take part in what’s being billed as an afternoon of discussion and discover as part of Evolutionary Edge. The event – which takes place 2 to 5 pm on Saturday, October 28, at the Sacred Earth Henge, located at 2831 East Valley Road – brings together Hubbard with Dr. Jude Currivan, an English cosmologist, planetary healer, and futurist who integrates leading edge science and research into consciousness and universal wisdom teachings.

“We’re bringing together these two leaders, two elder female widsom-keepers, to dive into their collective knowledge and see what we can do and where we go from here,” explained Adam C. The intention, Hall said, is to bring the conscious community together – “Gather the tribe, so to speak, within our local Santa Barbara community on this special piece of land – to combine our collective and wisdom as to what’s actually happening on our planet.” The goal is to bring in different perspective that might impact individuals and families and communities, and see how we might apply and learn in our local areas.

“With our current state of affairs on the planet, we’ve piled a lot of challenges on our younger generations,” Hall said. “We’re here to move forward, to create the greater solutions together for the benefit of everybody.

These challenges we are facing necessitate that we come together to have these kinds of discussions, come up with new ideas and models and ways of going about things. And not just talk, but coming up with concrete ideas of what we can do about it.”

Hubbard is launching the Universal Human (Homo universalis) – The 52 Codes: Their Emergence and Purpose in November, which Hall called “an amalgamation of her career.”

The new documentary Surviving Peace delves deeply into the core issues driving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, challenging the conventional wisdom about the underlying reasons and offering new and fresh thinking for peace. The film’s co-director and interviewer is Josef Avesar, a 64-yearold personal-injury attorney based in Los Angeles who decided to make the movie after he traveled to Israel with his family for a vacation and returned to see on the news that a place he had visited had been bombed. Featuring candid interviews with major Israeli and Palestinian leaders, government officials, and other thinkers, Surviving Peace examines the stated goal of a twostate solution from new perspectives.

The documentary has a one-week run in Santa Barbara at the Fiesta Theater October 27 to November 2, and Avesar is expected to be on hand for Q&A sessions following each screening. •MJ

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27 Fillin’ up on Floyd – Poor Man’s Whiskey (PMW) are a raucous “jamgrass” band that got its start playing the Playa out in Isla Vista and UCSB nearly two decades ago. Now based in Northern California, the band fuses bluegrass and old-time tunes with country, southern rock, and oldschool jamming, an approach that has found them playing everywhere from the Telluride Bluegrass, Strawberry and Kate Wolf Music Festivals to the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco.

PMW are known for offering a “HighOctane Hootenanny”, and have also recorded Dark Side of the Moonshine, a bluegrass interpretation of Pink Floyd’s classic album that claimed a place on Billboard’s album chart from its release in 1973 straight through to 1988, selling almost 50 million copies in total. That’s the show they’re bringing back to SOhO tonight, but being as the outlaw music bards like mashing things up, the event is also a Halloween party where everyone is encouraged to come dressed as a favorite Wizard of Oz character.

The day is devoted to all readers (women and men alike) who want to learn more about women who write and the stories they tell, showcasing both well-known women writers and those on their way up. The festival showcases women writers, both those who are already well-known and those who may be less well-known but equally deserving of serious attention. The gala also celebrates readers and is dedicated to promoting literacy, diversity, and social justice.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26 Dreams Unwind – It’s doubtful that Rhiannon Giddens, who co-founded and served as lead singer and banjo player of the Grammy Award-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, was thinking about the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship award when she titled her debut solo album Tomorrow Is My Turn a couple of years ago. The vocalist studied opera at Oberlin before forming the Drops to call attention to the vastly unheralded role of African-American musicians in the development of string band and country music, then enlisted producer T Bone Burnett (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) to help with her even more ambitious album that further expanded her take on a distinctly Americanamix of gospel, jazz, blues, and country. As of two weeks ago, Giddens is also the recipient of a Genius Grant, the nickname for the MacArthur, who lauded the North Carolina native with one of its no-strings-attached (pun intended) award that pays out $625,000 over five years. Her new album, Freedom Highway, features nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote along with a traditional tune and two civil rights-era numbers, “Birmingham Sunday” and the title track from the Staple Singers, all of which continue to bring forth her vision, and is likely to once again receive some attention from the folks who give out the Grammys. In the meantime, Giddens and band return to UCSB Campbell Hall for what promises to be a highlight of the season. Local residents will get the rare chance to witness his method of juxtaposing extremes – applying his lyrical and intimate voice to ply his path that embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure – unadulterated and unaccompanied in real time when Mehldau returns to a favored venue to perform solo for the Jazz at the Lobero series. The group is comprised of veteran musicians in the Los Angeles jazz scene who brought deep roots in the genre when they came together more than 13 years ago: Tom Peterson (tenor sax), Clay Jenkins (trumpet), Ira Nepus (trombone), Rich Eames (piano), Jeff D’Angelo (bass), and Dick Weller (drums). Among them, their credits include lengthy stints with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, ClaytonHamilton Jazz Orchestra, Billy Vaughn Orchestra, and Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Orchestra, plus stints with Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dizzy Gillespie, and the Glenn Miller Band, as well as tours or studio dates with Elton John, Leon Russell, B.B. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 Rubic’s Cube Drama at Rubicon – Sir Ronald Harwood, who won an Academy Award for his script for The Pianist, earlier explored similar territory of the collision between art, power, politics and personal responsibility in Nazi German with Taking Sides. Rubicon Theatre Company (RTC) kicks off its 2017-18 season with the provocative and gripping drama based on the true story of German conductor and composer Wilhelm Furtwängler, who was accused of being a Nazi sympathizer because he remained in Germany while many of his colleagues fled out of protest or because of persecution. Harwood’s dramatization of the investigation into Furtwängler is set in 1946 in the American Zone of occupied Berlin, where major Steve Arnold (played

by Patrick Vest, who portrayed producer David O. Selznick in RTC’s Moonlight and Magnolias) interrogates the conductor (Peter Van Norden, RTC’s Ebenezer Scrooge) to determine if Furtwängler naively believed that art was above politics, or had allowed himself to be manipulated by the Nazi propaganda machine, or even was a collaborator. The play itself asks complicated questions to examine personal and artistic responsibility in the face of horror, leaving the audience to ponder what we might do in similar circumstances. The little side project has done pretty well, as Robinson and company – which includes the great guitarist Neal Casal, who lives in Ventura – have already released six albums and

almost never stop touring. Barefoot in the Head continues the CRB’s exploration of psychedelic soul music, further pushing boundaries and breaking ground with a joy and wonder that comes from artists sharing a sonic wavelength. Praised as purveyors of “good-time music on an end-times mission” and as “masterful players on a Grail-like search for the cosmic heart of California,” CRB returns to town early this year (their previous three Lobero shows were in December), heralding Halloween rather than the end-of-theyear holiday season. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31 Do the Time Warp Again – Out of the Box (OOB) Theatre Company, which has brought a fair number of edgy new musical productions to town, kicks off its eighth season with something a bit more familiar if no less fun.

Rocky Horror Picture Show, the decidedly tongue-in-cheek (and elsewhere) musical tribute to the science-fiction and horror B-movie era, is the off-beat story of a naïve, newly engaged couple who seek shelter from a thunderstorm in an old castle, which turns out to be the home of a mad cross-dressing scientist, Dr Frank N. Furter. The good doctor is excited to unleash his latest creation, Rocky, on the unsuspected Brad and Janet, who are stripped of their inhibitions, as well their clothes for an epic adventure that mashes up comic-book style camp and rock ‘n’ roll.

Given that OOB shows are often interactive, throwing popcorn at the appropriate moments is not only expected, premium seating even includes a prop bag full of all the toys you’ll need. Costumes are encouraged for the five-day run that begins, naturally, on Halloween, and the audience will likely feel even more immersed as the black box space of Center Stage Theater might be the smallest, most intimate venue in town yet for the classic musical satire.
