A Spanish-style home on Cota Lane has received this year’s Beautification Award for Charming Cottage

his Saturday, November 4, Montecito Association hosts the 32nd annual Beautification Day in the upper village green. Hundreds of volunteers will participate in picking up litter along Montecito’s trails, roads, and beaches, and several Montecito homeowners will be honored for their contributions in keeping Montecito beautiful.

The Beautification Committee, once again led by Mindy Denson – who has organized the event for 13 years – has chosen winners in three Beautification Award categories: Charming Cottage, Drought-Tolerant Landscaping, and Beautiful Gate/Entryway.

This year’s winner for Charming Cottage is Jody Jones, the owner of a Spanish-style cottage on Cota Lane.

Jody has spent the last three years tending to the property, adding honeysuckle vines, roses in oversized planters, bamboo trees, boxwood plants,

and bougainvillea. The white-walled cottage is accessed via charming gates and a red-brick motor court. “It is so charming, on a lovely Montecito street,” Denson said.

The Drought-Tolerant Landscape award goes to a homeowner on Santa Rosa Lane, who with the help of her friend Annie Dyer, re-landscaped the front entry in 2014 during the drought. “Recognizing we were in a water shortage and water restriction time, it was so appealing to fill the area with a variety of stones, Birds of Paradise, and various succulents,” said the homeowner, who asked for anonymity. “Being from the East Coast, we were not familiar with succulents but have come to enjoy them.

We are happy our neighbors appreciate the beauty. It feels so California!”

TV, a correspondent on the syndicated show Extra, and a commentator on the KTLA Morning News. He moved to Montecito ten years ago.

Glory for Gloria and Peter

A

ussie jazz musician Peter Clark, who married his wife, Gloria Montano, in September at a quiet Montecito ceremony, celebrated the event in grander style at the University Club with more than 100 turning out for cocktails and dinner.

Peter had been dating Gloria, founder of the former social glossy Scene & Heard, for two years following the death of his wife, Dallas, in July 2014, after 31 years together, including owning Andria’s Harborside Seafood Restaurant for 10 years.

“I never thought I’d get married again after Dallas, but then Gloria came into my life,” says Peter, 79, who has lived in our tony town since 1988.

After crooning “It Had To Be You” with his band, and Teen Star 2014 Mary Grace Langhorne sang Over the Rainbow friends including

The Trees of Life

T

here is a Lorax-summoning trend happening in Montecito that is, along with the ongoing drought, significantly altering our rural feel as well as the health of our community: trees are being cut down – by the masses.

After speaking with tree services in town, I estimate that in the past two years somewhere close to 1,000 mature trees have been removed in Montecito. Many of these trees succumbed to the drought or drought-related infestations and diseases. With proper watering, however, most of those trees could have been saved.

During the late-summer months in Santa Barbara, a mature, non-native tree, which includes everything except our native oaks, needs about 150 gallons of water each month. That’s the same as running five loads of laundry or taking seven showers. Compared to what trees give us (life included), that’s not a lot of need. In addition to providing oxygen, trees provide shade, habitat for a majority of landbound biodiversity; healthy soils and erosion protection; and, most significantly in this time of global warming: clean air. Trees clean our air.

This leads me to the second reason it appears trees are being removed in such large numbers: they are being replaced with hardscape to replicate the city worlds people are leaving behind when they choose to move

to rural Montecito. I know, it doesn’t make sense. Why would you move from the city to the somewhat rural town of Montecito, only to remove that which is making Montecito feel more rural, thus recreating the feel of the city and, as more and more trees are removed, the air quality of those city hardscapes as well? The schools are good here, but not worth sacrificing our town and well-being for.

Yes, the trees require maintenance and water. They drop fruits and prickly things all over the patios and into the pools. They cover fancy cars with sticky sap, and birds roost in them, thus leaving their own droppings all over the cars, patios, and pools as well. And, boy, whenever the wind blows, sometimes a limb or two might pop off and cause minor (or even major) destruction.

And, while it’s certainly oftentimes easier to eliminate the “problem” than to deal with it, perhaps what could be done is for all those currently contemplating removing these magnificent creatures from our land- and skyscapes to take a gigantic step back and contemplate the alternatives.

Contemplate your health and, more importantly, the health of your children, which includes mental as well as physical health. Contemplate that every tree you take down is taking with it even more biodiversity than you could count in a lifetime. Contemplate

the impact on the air quality and the impact on your shade quality on our increasingly hotter days. And contemplate why you chose to move from the city and live in Montecito instead of, say, downtown Santa Barbara or the Mesa (I know, again, the schools are good here, but please...).

Maybe also read and re-read Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, and then research all the benefits, psychological ones as well, trees provide personally, to you.

Trees are here for us.

Please, stop cutting them all down.

Winn Should Go National

Ray Winn’s explanation of the current “global warming” issue (Ray’s Ramblings (Part I), MJ #23/43) was so exceptionally well-written and explanatory that even the scientifically uninitiated (such as politicians and the media) should be able to understand it. Unfortunately, I doubt any of them will read it, much less look into the background information to learn more facts.

While it is worthwhile for us all to do what we reasonably are able to reduce atmospheric pollution, the economic cost of some of the current initiatives, proposals, and laws should not be ignored. I would bet there are not more than a handful of state and local politicians and bureaucrats who are mandating things like “100-percent sustainable energy sources for the city of Santa Barbara by 2030,” that have ever read any of the scientific papers and reports behind this current craze, nor if they do read them, would understand them.

I hope that Ray keeps up his excellent writing and expands it to a national scale.

But this country has more than enough opportunities to make inequality a null issue. The problem is they do not want to put out the effort to earn those benefits. They think they are entitled to be given what they want. This is infantile. But they have the right to civilly protest.

I don’t know about you, but I have had it with all the bad news. It doesn’t feel like this has been a very good year for our country.

So, we decided to write this note in an effort to brighten things up. One house, one block, one neighborhood at a time.

Starting with our own blocks. Let’s break out holiday lights like never before. For Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah…

And maybe we can spread the idea to other streets. All over Santa Barbara, all over California. If somebody knows how to use Facebook and social media – whatever that is – maybe this could even go viral without anyone catching something.

Bugaboo

L

ike many other people, I am both fascinated and horrified by insects. In various respects, they are like us and unlike us. They are living beings, they reproduce, they nurture their young. They need food, water, and air. And in different ways, they need one another. And they die.

But they don’t look at all like us, they don’t seem to think or feel like us, and only in certain situations do some of them behave like us. Their life-span is much shorter than ours. In size, even the largest ones are much smaller than we are. But their history on this planet outdates ours by millions of years.

And they outnumber us by zillions.

As a class of beings, insects are great builders – and great destroyers. In some countries, I’ve seen large areas dotted with termite mounds – huge structures (considering the size of their inhabitants) which can reach a height of 17 feet and are incredibly hard and durable. Thankfully, on the other hand, I’ve had no occasion to witness an army of ants on the march, or a plague of locusts, which in each case virtually consumes everything in its path.

But we also have insects to thank for some of the worst and best aspects of human life. Among the worst, I would number the diseases which (quite unintentionally, no doubt) they’re responsible for spreading. Among these, we may count those carried to us by fleas and mosquitoes. It was fleas, carried by rats, which were responsible for the Bubonic Plague, familiarly called the “Black Death,” which wiped out a third of the population of Europe in the 14th century. And mosquitoes are blamed for a long list of ills, including malaria, Yellow Fever, various kinds of encephalitis, and the Zika virus, with its fearful possible effects on unborn babies.

But, on the other side of the ledger, we have various beneficial insects.

First, though many other kinds eat you, there’s a substantial array of bugs that you can eat – including ants, moths, crickets, and mealworms. Perhaps even more important are those many insects that eat other insects that are harmful to us, and to the plants and animals we wish to cultivate.

Then there is the cochineal, which lives harmlessly on cacti, but provides us with a useful red dye, as does another insect called a kermes. And there’s the cicada, whose shell provides a substance called chitin, whose 2 – 9 November 2017

uses include being made into biodegradable surgical thread. And did you know that it is a little insect called the lac bug that gives us the shellac resin, whose many applications once actually included making gramophone records?

But I’ve been saving the best for last: two wonderful substances we owe to insects – honey and silk. And for sheer fun, don’t forget we’ve been given by insects that oddity, the Mexican Jumping Bean.

Even the largest insects are much smaller than we are I now have to tell you about my own favorite and un-favorite insects – which are strangely linked. My un-favorite (and in this sentiment I am probably joined by most of the inhabitants of Australia) is that odious critter called the Australian bush fly (Musca Vetustissima.) It is just a fly, and it doesn’t bite or sting. The most disagreeable thing about it is that it likes people! It particularly likes our faces, buzzing and crawling all over our eyes, noses, and mouths. These hateful pests are so numerous and ubiquitous that the people in that favored land are constantly waving them off when outdoors – a gesture so common that it has become known as the “Aussie Salute.”

But this brings me to my favorite insect, which is known as the scarab, or dung beetle, and was apparently considered holy by the ancient Egyptians, because of its habit of rolling large balls about, of its own size, or even larger, which may have been seen as a kind of representation of moving the sun across the heavens. What matters to us today, however, is that those balls actually consist of dung – i.e., the feces of various animals, particularly cattle – which the beetles themselves feed on, or bury and use to house and nourish their offspring. That same dung would otherwise constitute the chief breeding-place for bush flies.

The Australian government has therefore encouraged the large-scale propagation of dung-beetles, and the results in controlling the bush fly population are encouraging.

So it’s the beetles, not the flies, which can now look forward to life as snug as a bug in a rug.

anta Barbara Rescue Mission (SBRM) held its 16th Bayou event at the historic Rancho Dos Pueblos estate thanks to owners Henry and Dundie Schulte, who donated the venue. This year’s theme was “Bonjour Bayou! A Tour de France.” The 65 dedicated members of the Women’s Auxiliary made sure the afternoon was all things French.

The greeters spoke French as we entered – well, a word or two. Then we came upon two artists painting away. There were two precious alpacas to pet. Is that French? The canapés were hot off the grill crepes filled with mushrooms. Of course, there was red or white wine and a magnifique silent auction to peruse. How about a week on Martha’s Vineyard or a week on the Big Island of Hawaii? There was also an alpaca ranch tour and dinner for 10 at the Canzelle Alpaca Farm in Carpinteria. Excellente musique was by The Idiomatiques.

Late lunch or early dinner with a crème de la crème banquet was set among the largest stand of Moreton Bay Fig trees in the world. The colors on the tables were all about Provence in my favorite yellow and electric blue. Lorraine Lim Catering created the French menu.

Hal Conklin introduced the honoree Reverend Denny Wayman, presenting him with the Leni Fe Bland Award. He was pastor for the Free Methodist Church of Santa Barbara for 40 years. He now oversees 60 churches in southern California. Denny and his wife, Cheryl, founded Cliff Drive Christian Counseling Center in 1995.

They also work with Rescue Mission clients and much more.

Program graduate Travis Kearney shared, “I’d probably be dead or in prison if it weren’t for the Rescue Mission.” Now he is happily married and has a life. He certainly deserves a standing ovation for turning his life around.

This special day was headed up by co-chairs Susan Hughes and Suzi Ryan with Dianne Davis as decorations chair. Silent-auction coordinators were Rose Hodge and Terry Foil. The president of the Women’s Auxiliary is Julie Willig. Chair of the board of directors is Paul Johnson.

There was extra cause to celebrate at the Heal The Ocean (HTO) gala fundraiser! SB44 has passed. As executive director Hillary Hauser exclaimed, “The oil in Summerland will be cleaned up!” Governor Jerry Brown has responded to the amazing outpouring of support from residents of Summerland, Santa Barbara, and across California. He okayed the funds to cap the leaking Becker Well on Summerland Beach. Construction will start in the next few months.

In Passing Dennis Dragon

D

ennis was born January 6, 1947, in Los Angeles. He was the youngest son of world-famous arranger, composer, and conductor Carmen Dragon and opera soprano Eloise Dragon. Shortly after his birth, the Dragon family moved to Malibu, where they became a local fixture for 50 years.

At 5, Dennis was “bangin’ on the drums” with brothers Doug and Daryl at the keys. From an early age, he played in various bands. One of his first, The Malibu Music Men plus One, featured his neighbor, a young Natalie Cole, as lead vocalist.

In the mid-1970s, he got a call from Daryl to engineer the first Captain & Tennille record at A&M Records. The result was a long string of hits and a 1975 Grammy for Record of the Year for “Love Will Keep Us Together”. He established his own recording studio in Malibu and was “booked solid.”

In 1976, he formed the rock band The Surf Punks. He produced, engineered, drummed, sang, wrote tunes, and produced videos for the band.

The group was signed to Epic Records

In 1990, he moved to Montecito where he lived for the next 18 years.

He married and had two boys, Cody and Jack.

“He was truly happy in Montecito, taking his boys down to Miramar every afternoon,” his family said.

In the final years of his life, he moved to Oregon to build his dream studio.

“Watching the local musicians come alive around him was a true testament to the amazing effect he had on those he worked with,” a loved one said. In winter, he hopped over to Hawaii for an extended stay with his good friend John Hunt.

“His journey spanned decades, but he was most proud to be a father to his amazing sons,” a love one recalled.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Kathy and Carmen. Dennis is survived by his former wife, Heather, and their children.

ove and Belonging: Harvesting the Power of Authentic Relationship”, the upcoming weekend workshop led by husband-and-wife somatic psychology educator Dr. Dyrian Benz and JoAnne Chartrand, postulates that feeling of love and a sense of belonging are the cornerstones to fulfilling relationships throughout life.

“Love is crucial to us as human beings, and it’s prevalent in every culture,” Benz explained, pointing all the way back to life in the days of cavemen and tribes. “If we didn’t belong to a tribe, we were free game for attack by animals. So, it’s a real strong impulse, instinctual.”

But often ancestral anxieties get in the way of experiencing open-hearted love, as our bodies can hold memories of emotional wounds and other traumas that may go back countless generations, Benz said.

And when the flow of love and acceptance is interrupted, the soul suffers, and the ability to call on “my peo-

ple” as a source of support is cut off or diminished, he said.

“There are thousands of people who are in the lineage of giving me life,” explained Benz, who is co-founder of Hakomi and the Santa Barbara-based Constellation Institute of California. “I can have a sense of belonging, a sense of what kind of support might be available from myself and others. But for many of us, that can also be a big rock in the way.”

The basic principle of relational constellations, work that Benz and Chartrand have helped develop and refined for decades, is to look for where love is stuck, and help it to flow again, Benz said.

“Maybe family members don’t talk to each other, or there are secrets, problems or traumas that have happened.

All of those thing stop the flow of love.

It becomes difficult to connect with self and others and life when these are present. With constellation work, we try to illuminate the connections and disconnections and improve them,

especially those we may not be aware of, a ‘legacy burden,’ not something we consciously choose.”

At the La Casa de Maria weekend seminar, scheduled for November 10-12 at the Montecito retreat center, the couple will lead awareness and meditation exercises “to get people settled and present in their bodies,” Benz said. Then, as in their ongoing private seminars, the work takes place in community. The participant who is working on an issue selects “representatives” from among their peers to portray family members, issues, or even concepts such as love itself. Then with very little instruction at all, the reps move and act based on their own intuition.

“We all just wait and watch,” Benz said. “The representatives are asked not to role-play but to check in non-verbally if there are impulses for movement, and to follow it. Most often what happens is we see the problem, the difficulty, in some physical form.

We pay attention to the body – often not even a word is spoken for several minutes before we might check in with you as to how that looks. Is that right?

Usually what appears first is what’s stuck. Then we look for possibility of allowing connections to begin to flow again.”

While the whole thing might seem like magic, Benz said there is science to back up the process. A double-blind study in Germany also showed lasting results from constellation work, he said. “The theory is that there are mirror neurons that send signals, a flavor in the field when a bunch of us sit together.”

Benz, who along with Chartrand is trained in somatics, said constellation work is an embodiment practice.

“Having mental understanding does not always lead to the right kind of real actions, those that are felt in my body.

We work with the nervous system, how the trauma shows up in the body.

It’s about feeling what you’re feeling, noticing it and being with it, and seeing where that goes.”

The weekend will feature full-group constellations and smaller circles of three to five participants so that everybody has the chance to do personal work. Even after decades of practice, Benz said he still finds himself astounded at the results.

“There’s ways something stunning that gets revealed, something that in my normal way of thinking wouldn’t be possible. Something always appears, an idea that just shows up, and it turns out to be true, which I attribute to spending time in the larger field beyond our personal protected little self. It’s surprisingly magical.”

Dale Halaway, the San Diego-based seminar leader and transformational coach who has been leading weekend workshops in Santa Barbara under the aegis of Montecito couple Ragan and Alex Thomson for almost two years, is readying a new offering for the beginning of next year. Unveiling on Coast Village Road

Last Friday, October 27, members of the business community, local government representatives, and stakeholders came out to celebrate the official unveiling of the newly remodeled Coast Village Plaza.

Since purchasing Coast Village Plaza in late 2014, Hank Hurst and Rich Rosin of H&R Investments have pursued their vision to revitalize the 20,000-square-foot building with a fresh and inviting exterior, expanded patio areas, and a vibrant mix of businesses. After a two-year design and permitting phase, construction began in August 2016 with improvements including new signage, a new elevator, reconfigured parking lot, new decking, dining patios, lighting, driveway, painting, landscaping, and new bike parking on Coast Village Road. A complete renovation of bathrooms and office areas on the lower level has also been completed.

Mayor Helene Schneider cut the ribbon following remarks by property owners Hurst and Rosen. The event was hosted by H&R Investments and Hayes Commercial Group. Mayor

Schneider was joined by Congressman Salud Carbajal, Santa Barbara City councilmember Gregg Hart, and representatives from the City planning department. “We’ve worked really hard on making this building a destination for Montecito residents,” Hurst said, thanking design firm eID, Michael Hurst Designs, Tryon Company, and Schipper Construction.

Also in attendance: members of the local media, tenants from the building, and members of the Coast Village Association.

“Hank and Rich assembled a great team to turn this building into an elite retail and office property,” said François DeJohn of Hayes Commercial Group. “This event was a fun way to show appreciation for the hard work everyone has done and to thank the existing tenants for their patience during construction.”

Sees What’s Going on

From my vantage point atop TV hill, I can see and hear virtually everything that goes on and that does not go on in the city and particularly at City Hall.

All joking aside, my observation is that at every election, those candidates who are linked hand-in-hand to the idealistic agenda-driven groups and the all-powerful unions never, and I mean never, cast any votes in opposition to the wants of these self-serving organizations. My other observation is that too many of our citizens, the ones who are not tied to these self-interest groups, share disdain at this state of affairs and express dissatisfaction, but do not vote at all.

My letter is addressed to all of you thousands who fit into this second category. My hope is that knowing how important it is to choose the right mayor, my letter will provide you at least one extra ounce of incentive to cast your vote.

I myself am voting for Frank Hotchkiss. As I see it, Frank may not be as slick or smooth as some of the other candidates, and he may not have the largest war chest to pay for his TV advertising, and that is unfortunate. But what he does have, which I believe is far more important, goes like this: 1) He is beholden to no one except himself and his good conscience. 2) He is not a career politician.

3) Before voting, he makes sure to read and really understand the issues. He does not have to consult his voting block organizations for decisions. 4) He is realistic; he does not waste his vote or the city’s limited budget on ideas that are not practical. He is 100 percent committed to fiscal accountability. 5) He is not afraid to “go against the tide.” 6) Above all, Frank Hotchkiss has integrity. I can trust him to do what’s right for all of us.

This is your city, and I hope you will join me by voting for Frank Hotchkiss.

Liberal is not a noun or pronoun, but an adjective and modifier. I have been trying to understand the loss of my constitutional rights since I moved to California. In the fewest amount of words, some are doing the law of the land and some are doing the law of the sea. Under Admiralty law, the words have archaic and obscure meanings best known by those who often exploit maritime law for their self-interest. It is a system of bankers lawyers and pirates, and they get to exploit coastal waters including rape, pillage, and plunder with impunity as long as it is for God and country.

Definition of “Liberal”: of, relating to, or based on the liberal arts; of or befitting a man of free birth; marked by generosity: openhanded… (see full definition in the most recent MerriamWebster Dictionary).

I’m no expert, but I was once hijacked by pirates. A warning to all: watch out for inland pirates! Wherever there are navigable waters, canals, rivers, lakes, and streams, someone can claim it as their own.

These luncheons will be obsolete when folks realize Alzheimer’s dementia is a variant of lipofuscinosis (yellow fat disease), including the kind of Alzheimer’s associated with microcirculatory mini-strokes.

I believe Omega 3 fatty acids — the ones supposedly necessary for brain growth — are responsible for Alzheimer’s and several other brain degenerative diseases.

Omega 3s include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentanoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (AA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

DHA? Isn’t that the stuff that builds the brain?

On the contrary, it swells the brain.

Nowadays, the great majority of mainstream doctors and holistic practitioners tout DHA as something essential for brain and heart health.

It’s anything but.

The very highly polyunsaturated fatty acid docosahexanoic acid (DHA) drops cholesterol levels, but there’s a price to pay.

According to the same source...

“The most commonly used method of lowering serum cholesterol is to substitute polyunsaturated fats for saturated fats in the diet. This tends to block cholesterol synthesis.

Polyunsaturated fats are much more subject to free radical autoxidation that creates carcinogenic and immune-suppressant organic peroxides. Both animals in experiments and humans in long-term cardiovascular studies have exhibited an elevated incidence of cancer when saturated fats were replaced with polyunsaturated.

Fred Harding (“Breast Cancer: Cause-Prevention-Cure”, 2006) wrote … “[Dr. Paul Dudley] White had noted that heart disease in the form of MI [myocardial infarction] was non-existent in 1900 when egg consumption was three times what it was in 1956, and when corn oil was unavailable.

When pressed to support the Prudent Diet, Dr. White replied, ‘See here, I began my practice as a cardiologist in 1921 and I never saw an MI patient until 1928. Back in the MI-free days before 1920, the fats were butter and lard, and I think that we would all benefit from the kind of diet that we had at a time when no one had ever heard of the word ‘corn’.”

Paul Dudley White (the father of American Cardiology) was president Dwight D. Eisenhower’s personal physician and chief cardiologist.

What about the ALA omega 3 in flax?

It’s the stuff that makes horsemeat toxic to omnivores and especially to carnivores.

Honoring America

I

love athletic competition. Such activity has played a vital role in the life of our nation. For their contribution to America, our professional athletes are handsomely rewarded financially. We ask little of them in return, other than quality performances. In some cases, the taxpayers even participate in providing the financing to build the arenas and stadiums that are used by our professional sports teams. Given these facts, it is not unreasonable for the American public to expect gratitude from those who are associated with professional sports teams.

There is also a time-honored tradition in professional sports to evidence pride in America at the beginning of each event. This is done by having someone sing the national anthem or by reciting the pledge of allegiance and honoring the American flag. All players are expected to be attentive and to show their pride, their patriotism, in America when these symbols of our nationality – our flag, the national anthem, or the pledge of allegiance – are on display or are being recited.

During the 2016 football season, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Colin Kaepernick, began protesting against “police brutality” and “racism” in America by not standing while the United States national anthem was being played.

Kaepernick’s protest had virtually no effect in 2016 and seemed to be on a path to completely fizzling out when President Trump inadvertently reinvigorated it on September 22, 2017, at a political rally in Huntsville, Alabama.

What appeared to inflame the controversy most was the president’s suggestion that any player who disrespected America should be fired from the team. The president said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now.

Out! He’s fired.”

Initially, I had a lot of doubt about the wisdom of President Trump weighing in on this controversy, but the more I reflected on it, the more convinced I became that the president had exercised prudent judgment and strong leadership by engaging himself on the issue. First, it is an inherent characteristic of leadership for the leader of any organization to be keenly interested in how members 2 – 9 November 2017

of the team perceive the organization.

America is effectively a team, and the president of the United States is, effectively, the captain. Thus, accentuating “team pride” is a relevant factor for the American president to address. This is especially the case when the mission of the “team” is to “make America great” and making America first is a stated objective.

Unlike most countries, America is not a nation where its people are united by a common language, religion or culture, and we come in many colors. This is the reality of our quest for diversity. Often, it seems there is more to divide Americans than there is to unite us. It is for this reason that patriotism is so important.

It must be noted that the president did not mention the issue of race when he spoke in opposition to protests that disrespected America.

This is not to say, however, that race should be excluded from consideration as we examine this issue.

As an example, one afternoon during the early to mid-1960s, I was watching the Olympics on television with my immediate family, which consisted of Aunt Bert, Uncle James, and their daughter (my cousin) Phyllis. One of the black sprinters competing for America had won his race and was standing on the platform to receive his gold medal.

As “the Star Spangled Banner” was being played, the young man gazed off into the distance, expressing indirectly his obvious contempt for what should have been a patriotic moment. Watching this, Uncle James became irate and yelled at the screen, ”Put your damn hand on your heart, boy, and show some respect!” I have seen such a scene play out on numer-

So, while President Trump did not mention race, I have no hesitancy in confirming that a number of black people, particularly in the black underclass, reject the concept of American patriotism. The reason is that they consider America to be a racist nation – past and present – and undeserving of the personal loyalty of black people.

The personal anger that black people direct at their nation is something that I find to be baffling. The progress in America with respect to race is indisputable. What, then, accounts for the anger and resentment that many black people harbor about America?

The answer to the above question may be found, I believe, on the socks worn by Kaepernick. They are well-known to be socks with images

that depict police officers as pigs.

These socks confirm the widely held view that “racism” and “police brutality” were the key issues driving Kaepernick’s protest. In my view, these issues are largely fabricated. To the extent that they have some legitimacy, I would contend that professional sports are not an appropriate venue to address them, especially when the fans represent a captive audience.

When there is so much to divide us, there is no better place or time for Americans to unite than at a sporting event. Individuals of different “races” and economic backgrounds and other significant differences can unite, even if for only two to three minutes, and reaffirm our dedication to the nation and the values that America represents.

A group of Live Saver Award recipients were acknowledged during a Montecito Fire District board meeting last week, for helping to save a Montecito resident who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while riding his bike

The resident was riding his bicycle along San Ysidro Road when he suffered the medical emergency and collapsed. Several civilians driving by came to his aid, which sent into motion a series of events that included CPR from a nearby sheriff’s deputy, the aid of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) from the nearby YMCA, and help from paramedics and fire personnel. “It really was a group effort, and they saved his life,” said MFPD’s Jackie Jenkins.

The recipients of the Life Saver Award were recognized for their individual efforts, providing emergency medical care and assistance, and using CPR and AED skills in a situation in which the patient would have died, had he not received immediate intervention. The fully recovered patient attended the meeting and had the opportunity to meet the following recipients. Community members: Rosario Alfaro, Ramon Adams, Roberta Tracy, and Maude Boersema.

MWD Moves Forward with Desal At last week’s Montecito Water District board meeting, the Board of Directors was given an update on desalination, after discussions with the City of Santa Barbara stalled earlier this year. In March, dissatisfied 2 – 9 November 2017

with the first phase of negotiations on a Water Supply Agreement with the City, the board directed staff to pursue alternatives prior to engaging in a costly second phase of negotiations.

The alternative presented last Tuesday was a plan to pursue an independent MWD desalination facility, with the first step including the solicitation of development proposals from public private partnerships. Staff findings, supported by MWD consultant Clean Energy Capital, indicate that an independent facility could be financially viable and provide more control and long-term certainty of supply than was available through negotiations with the City. Developing an independent desalination facility and corresponding water supply agreement would also provide a basis for comparison with the City’s proposed terms; such a benchmark has been lacking to date, according to District reps. The board voted unanimously to move forward with the plan, emphasizing that it could be “off-ramped” at any time if more favorable negotiations with the City resume.

Several directors and members of the public articulated that a single, regional approach to desalination continues to be the preferred option if more acceptable terms can be reached, and recognized that in lieu of an agreement with the City, the District’s strategy for pursuing an independent facility is sound. Public comments from multiple District customers also stated that Montecito Water District and Montecito Sanitary District “need to collaborate.” Director Tobe Plough recommended that staff include discussion with Montecito Sanitary District on the agenda for a future meeting, to explore working together moving forward.

Westmont College here in Montecito, explores the science of belief in a public lecture at 5:30 pm next Thursday, November 9. “New Discoveries in Science and Religion: Are We Built to Flourish with Faith?” takes place at the University Club, 1332 Santa Barbara St., as part of The Westmont Downtown series, finds Schloss, who is internationally known for his scholarship on interactions between evolutionary theory and religious faith, examining whether humans are naturally wired for faith.

The talk goes beyond the Darwin vs. Dogma debate about whether science debunks or supports belief in a creator to focus more on recent work concerned with the casual origin and role of religion, considering whether it be a unique, adaptive human endowment. The lecture will explore the current debate over whether faith is a “pathology” or an important element of individual health, personal fulfillment and social flourishing, and suggests that the either/or polarity is too simplistic.

to launch a new, two-week class on “Awakening the Enlightened Body Speech and Mind – The Sacredness of our Life”. The teaching addresses the unique relationship we have to our body, speech, and mind, which highlights the ambivalent relationship we often have with the world around us. The “real world” offering comes from the concept that since we are born into a world of impermanence, uncertainty, and change, many people struggle to make sense of the real meaning of life in the face of birth, old age, sickness, and death.

Yet even in their impermanence, our body, speech, and mind hold wisdom and key answers to many of our most important spiritual questions and are the micro cosmos to the macro cosmos of the outer world.

The class takes place 7 to 9 pm, following a guided meditation, on November 2 and 16. During Dawa’s absence on November 9, a Sangha-led meditation and movie occupies the time frame, with the screening of a video on the Shamar Rinpoche interview at the Milken Institute in Santa Monica on March 12, 2014. Three months before his passing, Shamar Rinpoche discussed his book The Path of Awakening and the various aspects of lojong practice, moderated by Marc Junkunc, a professor at Virginia Tech.

Next Saturday, November 11, brings a Day of Intensive Chenrezig Practice with Khaydroup Zangmo to Bodhi Path. The event, held 10 am to 4 pm, consists of morning and afternoon sessions and features instructions, discussion, and practice to further deepen understanding and confidence in the benefits of the practice associated with Chenrezig, the bodhisattva of compassion who is considered the patron Bodhisattva of Tibet. His simple “Om Mani Padme Hum” mantra meditation is practiced in all the great lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, with the belief that we all share, in our basic nature, unconditional compassion and wisdom that is no different from what we see in the lamas.

The event marks a return of onetime Santa Barbara Bodhi Path resident teacher Zangmo, who completed two three-year retreats in France before moving to the U.S. in 2000 to be a resident teacher at the Santa Barbara center. During her two-year residency, she helped found both the San Luis Obispo Bodhi Path and West Los Angeles Bodhi Path centers, which later moved to Pasadena where Khaydroup still serves. Admission is by suggested donation of $35 for either a morning or afternoon session, or $60 for both.

ehearsing five days a week for nine weeks, the cast and crew of the SB High School play Cry Baby were putting on their polishing touches the day I arrived via the school back lot to preview the production. The students, equipped with individual facial microphones mostly in full costume with makeup, sang and danced on cue with a sincere performing attitude, working to get the delivery and timing right.

The play is adapted from the cult-classic, teen rom-com movie of the same name, written and directed by John Waters in 1990, starring Johnny Depp. The school’s playbill cites adaption from the book by Thomas Meehan and Mark O’Donnell, with music and lyrics by Adam Schlesinger and David Javerbaum. It takes place in 1954 Baltimore, noting well the era’s end of barbershop-quartet romance and the beginning of freedom via rock ‘n’ roll and... I’ll leave it there for future fans to attend the school’s performances over the next two weekends.

Remodel at SB Rescue Mission

J

ust as the holidays arrive and the weather changes from arbitrary heatwaves to mild blankets of frost on early-morning lawns, the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission – the city’s one and only emergency homeless shelter – will begin a $10-million remodel that will reduce its daily availability by 80 percent for the next 16 months. President of the Rescue Mission Rolf Geyling says the 40,000 sq ft facility is in dire need of a full renovation, before Santa Barbara ends up without any emergency shelter at all.

“We’ve been on overflow for, I believe, something like seven years now,” Geyling says. “We’ve removed a large number of pews from the chapel and replaced them with cots for the men to sleep on. We can do better than what we are doing right now.”

Since the summer alone, the Rescue Mission has dealt with four major plumbing disasters that were so inconvenient the faculty ordered outhouses so the guests had somewhere to relieve themselves. As of now, there is one functioning bathroom, which men and women have to share. According to Geyling, as well as the director of communications, Rebecca Weber, the remodel includes all new plumbing, with separate bathrooms for women and men, plus all major electrical and

mechanical systems, including an elevator for those who can’t make it upstairs to the regular beds. In addition, the $10-million upgrade will increase the space for women.

As a result, during phase 1 of what Geyling and Weber describe as a much-needed and long-overdue renovation, and which may begin as early as next week, the 70 to 90 people who frequent the Rescue Mission will drop to fewer than 20 people a day. In addition, the women’s side will temporarily be reduced from its current 13 to 33 women to zero to 22 a night, during the year-and-a-half upgrade.

Being one of the only inpatient rehabs and homeless shelters in the city, the Mission has housed more than 110 people in the 94 bed shelters every day of the year since 1965. This includes showers and food and either a bed or a cot for each person. Sometimes the facility fills up to 200 people a night, including the residents in the drug and alcohol treatment program. This means that in the months to come, up to 150 people will be without treatment or shelter each day during both phases of this renovation.

At the same time, one of the only other shelters – PATH (People Assisting The Homeless) – is currently at full capacity and will be for at least another

two weeks. PATH can hold no more than 100 people and they are required to prove they have been a Santa Barbara resident for at least six months before admission. Also, the winter shelter will not open this year unless there is at least a 50% chance of rain, or the temperature reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

If one or both of those predictions are factors, then PATH will agree to temporarily open some emergency beds.

So, between PATH at full capacity, and with no set plan to open the winter shelter, plus the overall dilapidation of the Rescue Mission – including a population of bloodthirsty bedbugs – more than a dozen people are currently camped in front of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission. Not to mention the others who are strewn along East Yanonali Street. The street campers sit in chairs and wheelchairs and live under green pine needles on an old gifted mattress that sits on the brown dirt. And though most of the campers refuse to use the facility for a bed, the Rescue Mission continues to welcome them for meals at mealtime so they don’t go hungry while living outdoors in the approaching winter and lonely holidays.

Furthermore, some of the campers have lived in Santa Barbara their entire adult lives, not because of the one emergency shelter the City provides for those without food, a shower, and a roof, but because of weather. Santa Barbara’s climate is why those without homes arrive and stay, or never leave the second-wealthiest county in the state of California.

Some of the street campers have major health problems, issues that do not pertain to alcoholism or addiction, such as cancer, broken bones, schizophrenia, and manic depression. In other words, there are many who depend a great deal on East Yanonali Street, the long road that is also home to the City sanitation plant, where the redolence of human waste seeps through the air while the unemployed wait for a job on the side of the bended street. Where the impoverished, the sick, and the mentally ill line up at 6 pm and wait for a meal and a bed in one of the only locales that won’t call the police when the homeless set up camp under a lone standing tree.

On the other hand, there are many who still lurk in the darker areas of Santa Barbara, day and night. They hide in the clefts of a city named after a Greek Christian Saint more than 400 years ago, one with an estimated population of nearly 92,000 citizens, with an average household income of just under $64,000, and nearly 11,500 business owners as well.

In the interim, local donors and partnerships have contributed nearly $7.8 million in pursuit of the $10 million the project is expected to cost. In his statement for The Santa Barbara Mission Capital Campaign, Sheriff Bill Brown says, that, in his career of nearly

four decades, the Sheriff Department’s method has been to find “these people,” who he states are mostly “drunks, drug addicts, street people, prostitutes, vagrants, and petty criminals,” and to put them behind bars. “Nail ‘em and jail ‘em, as the saying goes.

“The problem was the same people kept coming back to the streets, and then getting sent back to jail,” Brown adds. “We discovered we needed partnerships, like our partnership with the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission – a place where broken lives can be re-built.”

The drug and alcohol treatment program and its clients will not be immediately affected, and according to Geyling, “Nobody will be asked to leave who is already in the program.” Although during the remodel, and while graduations take place and people randomly “walk” (leave the program) for other various reasons, the capacity of 45 men will drop to as low as 32 clients at a time. So, for many incarcerated and waiting to get into the treatment program, most will likely remain in jail for longer than they expected.

According to Geyling, someone who is turning his or her life around needs at least 12 months of inpatient rehab in order to heal properly so he or she can move into a sober living facility, which is the next step after a year of inpatient rehabilitation.

Bronson Thomas Sr., a recent graduate of the Rescue Mission’s drug treatment program says, “Who knew that in just over a year my life would change forever, and because of the staff and donators to the Rescue Mission, it made it possible for me to get off the streets and get the extensive care I required, and at no cost financially.”

Thomas, who is also a student at Santa Barbara City College, adds, “Before being accepted into the one-year men’s recovery program, my life was a living hell. I had no boundaries and I crossed everyone else’s. I had literally burnt every bridge. And since graduating the Mission, I have gone from stealing cars while high on meth, to pursuing a career in Computer Network Engineering. The Mission saved my life.”

“After we are done with the remodel, all the clients will have a better place to heal and get what they need,” says Geyling, who adds that during the remodel the Rescue Mission will give the 14 to 22 beds a night to the daily visitors who are – age- and health-wise – most vulnerable.

Since PATH and the Salvation Army are filled for the weeks ahead as of now, there will be those who have no other choice than to join those who ride or walk with overstuffed backpacks, pedaling bikes with trailers the size of small automobiles. And through a community that only recently held its 93rd Old Spanish Days celebration, using the three-word slogan: “Unity through Community.”

Opulent Opera Stages Manon

M

anon, Massenet’s sultry and once scandalous tale of love, lust, ambition, and greed set in 18th century France comes to Opera Santa Barbara (OSB) this weekend via a re-mounting of a production originally staged barely more than two years ago in Iowa. That’s where OSB artistic director Kostis Protopapas caught Des Moines Metro Opera’s presentation directed by Kristine McIntyre, and immediately told the veteran helmer of more than 75 operas across the United States that he wanted to bring her version of Manon here.

But a lot has changed since 2015. For one thing, Des Moines is used to taking on challenging productions, such as creating a whole set of scenery to work with its unusual theater design – which features a semicircular stage in front of the orchestra pit – around the costumes that came from Opera Australia. Not only does the Granada have the more standard proscenium stage alignment, but Manon will be by far the biggest production ever undertaken by OSB. “Santa Barbara is a very small company and the show is physically very big, with lots of costumes, a lot of wigs, five sets,” McIntyre said, responding to a question about what had been challenging so far. “Everybody keeps telling me we’ve never done anything nearly this size. It’s ambitious and that’s great, but as a director it also terrifies me. So I’ve had to help people wrap their heads around the scale of this show.”

What’s more important, the world – or at least America – is a vastly different place than it was in 2015, which was filmed for Iowa TV and recently won a regional Emmy. about Harvey Weinstein and others.

“I can’t say I found (Manon) as resonant as I do right now,” she confessed.

“There’s so much in it about how women are treated differently than men, especially someone like Manon, who would be a Hollywood starlet today. And there’s Guillot, who at first you think is just a silly upper-class fop, but it turns out he’s very nasty – the ugly boy in high school who the girls wouldn’t talk to who now has money and thinks he’s entitled. When Manon turns him down, he decides to destroy her... It’s fascinating how Massenet tapped into something very real and human that we’re still dealing with today, and it’s been interesting to read the paper and then go into rehearsal.”

McIntyre had lots more to say about the opera and working with celebrated soprano Sarah Coburn in the title role and conductor Protopapas in a recent extended conversation.

Q. What keeps you coming back to Manon?

A. She’s a unique character in opera, young and capricious, extraordinarily ambitious, and more than a little selfish. She goes after what she wants, but she runs up against a whole tide of men who want things from her in return. So it’s a story about how ambition can lead you astray, and about a woman being crushed by the morals

of her society, plus a tragic love story...

When the novel was written in the 1730s, it was immediately banned, which always tells you that it’s kind of juicy and good, if those in power decide it’s too dangerous to let people read it. But it was popular because people realized it was a reflection of their society. A hundred years later, Massenet turned it into a much more grand and romantic story, but it still raises fascinating questions and still holds up a mirror to today’s society.

It’s an interesting time to explore this notion of her ambition and where it takes her, and how the sexual politics play out in the context of the love story.

Manon is basically a Hollywood starlet at the top of her game. Everybody wants something from her and she wants things too. But at the same time, you get the sense that she’s just a lonely little girl inside. And you can’t look away! She’s one of the beautiful creatures. Even when she’s being completely selfish and a little outrageous, she’s still fascinating.

Your focus in recent years has been on new, contemporary, and American works.

Manon is none of those.

It is the first period piece I’ve done in a while, but that was my background (15 years between San Francisco and the Met in New York). It’s great to be back in this world trying hard to infuse it with a modern sensibility and help people understand why this story is worth telling now.... And the music is so rich and has so many facets, so many ways of interpreting what it means. There’s a lot I get to exploit and explore.

How does that modern focus show up in Manon?

I have tremendous sympathy for her.

People might say she’s just a spoiled brat, overly ambitious, and she gets what she deserves. But I see her as a product of her times, an emblem of the early 18th century, which really isn’t all that different a society than today. We criticize woman for being ambitious. If she were a man, we’d say “Oh, he’s forward-thinking and he has a plan. He wants things and he’s on the road to get them.” But because she’s a woman and it’s about her beauty, it’s viewed through a negative lens. When I said that at the first rehearsal, that hypocrisy was familiar to everyone in the room.

How has it been to direct Sarah Coburn?

Kostis has been telling me about her for years and thought she would be special as Manon, which was one of her bucket-list roles. It’s a lovely opportunity to do a part with her that’s she’s always wanted to play, a character who isn’t just a saint, one with a lot more complexity and

ambiguity.... For me, I can’t really compare her (to the soprano in Iowa).

When I’m in a room with someone, they are my world. Everything else falls away. So right now, Sarah is my Manon.... She’s really bright and a Type A personality who has all her ducks in a row. Manon isn’t like that at all. She’s just 15 when the opera starts, a real wild child, and only ages four years in the pieces. She’s all appetite and makes decision on the spur of moment, just going after what she wants. So it’s been fun and interesting to help Sarah find those impetuous aspects of Manon, discover someone who just flips a switch emotionally and makes decisions without reason.

What We’ve Learned So Far

The truth is now revealed. Barack Obama, the Clintons, and the Democratic Party sold out America.

For starters, in 2009, the FBI found hard evidence that the Clintons, Eric Holder, and Team Obama were colluding with Russia. The evidence was kept secret so that Obama could approve the Uranium One Deal in 2010, which gave Russia 20 percent of our uranium resources. Why would anyone give their enemy material that could be used to make nuclear bombs?

Then in 2015, Obama signed an outrageous deal with Iran, the leading state sponsor of terrorism. By doing so, Obama transferred $1.7 billion in cash to Iran, and gave the terrorist state a pathway to acquiring nuclear weapons and missiles. It put both America and Israel in more danger.

Most recently, we found out that Hillary Clinton and the Democrats paid millions to create a fake Russian dossier that was aimed to delegitimize the Trump presidency. Team Obama and the corrupt media spread the phony information throughout America. And yes, Russia was involved.

When did we enter the twilight-zone dimension and allow words (“hate-speech”) to hurt and injure us so much that we feel justified in pepper-spraying someone in the face, inches away-from their eyes? Banning speakers and rioting because reasonable, logical, cogent, “politically incorrect” speakers are going to share their opinions in a lecture hall? Where did “Let’s agree to disagree” go? Does anyone remember the saying, “Sticks and stones might break my bones, but words will never hurt me?”

Recently, I have been enjoying the wisdom-words of our new and young philosophers. They are all very intelligent, insightful, and deliciously glazed with a great sense of humor. Check them out: Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, Stephan Molineaux, Ben Ruben... to name a few.

My conviction is that we are experiencing evolutionary growing pains in our collective consciousness, and the result of this opinion fever will bring about a kinder, gentler U.S.A. The rest of the world will follow... in time... they always do. In this epoch, we are the high-values leaders that everyone will eventually entrain with.

Oh! How could I forget to include Gavin McGuiness in the list of our new philosophers? He is very funny, wise, and oh-so irreverent. His “take” on current events is “right-on.”

Q. How did the idea of the video-sync concerts came about?

A. I saw the 1931 silent film Dracula with Bela Lugosi in Los Angeles a few years ago, with Philip Glass conducting his own score with the Kronos Quartet. Hearing the music louder and larger than life was so unique and fun. Afterward, I realized that we make a lot of short films, and most people only experience them on a phone or maybe a computer. For better or worse, we are synonymous with our videos, so wouldn’t it be fun to play live and have them shown on the big screen?

In its second concert of the new season, Santa Barbara Music Club pays tribute to one of its own, the remarkable composer and pianist Emma Lou Diemer. The Saturday afternoon concert celebration of her 90th birthday also marks 60 years since the Yale (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music) and Eastman School of Music (Ph.D.)-trained Diemer – who also studied in Brussels on a Fulbright Fellowship and at Tanglewood – began publishing her compositions that eventually encompassed works for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, voices, and electronics. Diemer later taught theory and composition at UCSB from 1971-91 and was composer-in-residence with the Santa Barbara Symphony (199092 and organist at First Presbyterian Church (1984-2000).

When we started the group at 21, we thought we were just a rock band and did all the things you’re supposed to do. But as time went on and we grew up, we became people who make things. So now, we feel very comfortable being more than a band – filmmakers, tech enthusiasts, musicians. We’re very comfortable in our own creative skins, so it’s not weird at all.

Okay then, let’s actually talk about the music: how has it evolved or refined over the years?

We’re much more confident in our musical ideas rather than telling ourselves we couldn’t do certain styles because it wasn’t who we are. But now, we write what we want to write.

So, we’re more adventurous and eclectic and experiment a lot.

Has the songwriting itself been informed by how it will work as a video?

It might be hard to believe, but it really hasn’t. Songwriting is a more private and internal process, and it would be too exhausting if we had to write based on what we thought the visual would be. We enjoy immersing ourselves in the music just for itself.

It’s daunting enough to sit down and write a record’s worth of material without predicting how the videos might look.

Still, the videos are amazing, very ambitious and all over the place. The word “can’t” doesn’t seem to be in your vocabulary.

Yeah, we’re always interested in making the impossible possible. The zero gravity idea, for example, was kicking around in our universe for 10 years before we tried it. Once we managed to get the rehearsal time in an aircraft, we just had to do it no matter how scary and intimidating the idea was. But they don’t happen on the spur of the moment. You have to spend a lot of time planning and rehearsing to execute in a way that’s worthwhile, which we learned by doing it.

25 bedrooms and 29 bathrooms on eight acres, but the sisters tried to supersede her purchase by selling it to a local businesswoman and restaurateur Dana Hollister, with a promissory note of more than $9 million.

But the Archdiocese of L.A. said they had no right to sell it, and earlier this year a judge ruled in Katy’s favor.

In order to move in, she still needs final approval from the Vatican and to relocate the House of Prayers.

Hollister, who wanted to turn it into a hotel, paid just $44,000 for the 20,000-sq.-ft. property on 8 acres and moved in, while the Teenage Dream singer was willing to pay $10 million in cash, plus an additional $4.5 million for the House of Prayers.

Adrian Alarcon, a spokesman for the archdiocese, says: “Under Canon Law, any transaction of significant value must be reviewed and approved by the Vatican. In this case, the review would include the entire transaction, but nothing could be submitted to Rome until a suitable House of Prayers location is identified.”

The nuns were given the estate in 1970 by the late Daniel Donahue, a wealthy businessman who purchased the home from the owner it was built for in 1927 – Earle Anthony, a pioneer of the broadcasting and automobile industries.

Reversal of Fortune Meadow Walker, daughter of the late Santa Barbara actor Paul Walker, has settled her wrongful-death lawsuit against German car giant Porsche over her father’s death in November 2013.

The 18-year-old only daughter of the Fast and Furious star, reached a resolution last month, with terms of the settlement confidential, according to The Blast.

Both parties as part of the terms requested the dismissal of the wrongful-death case.

Fancy Nancy On a personal note, I mark the passing of best-selling author and former Montecito resident Nancy Taylor Rosenberg, who went to more heavenly pastures in Las Vegas at the alltoo-early age of 71.

The Texan-born writer worked as a model at Neiman Marcus and became a police officer in Dallas and New Mexico before moving to Ventura, where she was an investigator.

In 1991, at the age of 44, she enrolled in a UCLA creative-writing class and a year later, drawing on her experience in law enforcement, wrote her first novel, Mitigating Circumstances, which became a New York Times bestseller. The film rights were obtained

by Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme.

Many other novels soon followed including Interest of Justice, First Offense, Trial By Fire, California Angel, and Abuse of Power, followed by eight more tomes.

Nancy and her husband, Jerry, who also had a home in Manhattan, moved to Nevada four years ago.

A Toast to Jerry Hatchett

M

ore than 300 people gathered for cocktails and dinner on a recent Sunday evening at the Santa Barbara Carriage Museum to celebrate the career of long-time Knowlwood Tennis Club (KTC) tennis director Jerry Hatchett, who has taught multiple generations of Montecito children and their parents not only tennis, but lasting life lessons.

“Don’t call it a retirement party, because he’s not retiring!” said Cathy Quijano, one of the organizers of the event. Although Hatchett, 72, retired as tennis director and head pro at the end of last year, he still teaches private lessons at Knowlwood, a private club with 170 families as members.

Quijano was one of five women, including Julie Whalen Schuetz, Joanne Rapp, Sharol Siemens, and Hatchett’s wife, Susan Burns, who organized the party to celebrate his 46-year career as the steward of Knowlwood and his contributions to the tennis community throughout the Santa Barbara area. Guests came from all over the country to attend the event and honor Hatchett.

“This tremendous turnout is a testimony to how Jerry has impacted the lives of so many of us in the Santa Barbara tennis community and at KTC,” said Knowlwood board president Steve Kent. “The truth is that we represent just the tip of the iceberg in terms of all of the kids, families, Knowlwood members (past and present), friends, and family that he has touched and helped through the years.”

After growing up in Texas, Hatchett came to Santa Barbara in the mid1960s to play tennis for University of California, Santa Barbara, where his teammates included current Montecito residents and Knowlwood members David Grokenberger and Ted Campbell. Afterwards, while in graduate school there, Hatchett helped coach the UCSB team.

At about the same time, in 1969, Brian Rapp, Palmer Jackson, and George Manset (now deceased) pur-

chased 8 acres on East Valley Road from the Knowls family, with the intention of starting a family-focused tennis club. One night, Rapp brought Hatchett to his house for dinner to get his wife’s opinion of whether he should hire the young pro to be the first tennis director at the new club.

“This charming hippie came into our house,” said Joanne Rapp at the event. “He talked about tennis in a way that I had never heard, and I told my husband that we would be lucky to have him here for two years. Thank you, Jerry, for giving us a lot more than those two years!”

Over the years, Hatchett developed a unique tennis program not found at most other clubs in the area or even in the country. To keep his large teaching staff of eight to nine pros busy, non-Knowlwood members were allowed to take clinics and lessons.

His women’s clinics in particular had a devoted following throughout Santa Barbara, and to be invited to play in his top-level clinic was a hard-won privilege among competitive women’s players.

But the heart of Hatchett’s philosophy was to make Knowlwood a family-friendly place, where kids of all skill levels could have fun and hang out.

“My philosophy is to trust the kids.

If kids aren’t micromanaged, they are much more creative and invent their own games.”

and served as one of the emcees for the event. “For the kids’ programs, his number-one goal was to make it fun. I have a lot of great memories of having fun on the tennis court with Jerry.”

The tribute to Hatchett featured many speakers from all facets of Hatchett’s life: Rob Cowell, who was the other emcee and who also grew up at Knowlwood; Joanne and Brian Rapp; former Knowlwood board president Lindsay Parton; his brother Joele and son Che Hatchett; and Wayne Bryan, another teammate from UCSB who also is the father of the Bryan Brothers, the most-winning professional doubles team in history.

Bryan, who is also a musician, wrote and performed a song called “Jerry the Hatchett Man”; its video included images of Hatchett dancing and driving his beloved vintage Corvette, as well as other photos from Knowlwood events over the years.

After the speakers, Hatchett, who was visibly moved by the tributes to him, explained that part of his success was due to his decision “to hire really good, talented, innovative people and get out of their way.” He thanked the tennis pros who worked for him over the years, including Tom Horton and Crandell Edwards, who have worked at Knowlwood for 34 years and are the current tennis directors; Kim Denig, Danny Echt, Rob Cowell, and Richie Cheetham, who all grew up at Knowlwood; Jeff Thompson and Miguel Hernandez, who have worked at Knowlwood for decades; Jonny Sapp; and Gary Bellomy, who moved to North Carolina about 10

years ago but who flew into town for the event.

The amazing thing, Hatchett said, is that even though people spent an entire evening thanking him for helping them, he feels as if he is the lucky one. “All the students gave me so much. It’s been my honor and privilege to coach either you or your kids at Knowlwood – to be trusted to teach generation after generation – thank you, guys!”

For those who would like to honor Hatchett’s work, donations can be made to the Edward Robert Doty Fund at the Santa Barbara Foundation, which solely benefits the Tennis Patrons of Santa Barbara, a non-profit group that helps underprivileged children learn the game of tennis.

Hatchett is a longtime Tennis Patrons board member.

ith last week’s heat wave gone in time for overcast Halloween weather, our town’s annual Ghost Village Road brought out troves of tricks and treats. Sponsored by the Coast Village Road Association along with our faithful businesses and employees with their costumes on, the event proved fruitful for all the kids young and old.

Notable outfits included fantasy and sci-fi, with a few dinosaurs tossed in. All Montecito schools were well-represented, and new visitors joined the street stroll. Photos tell all!

CITY OF SANTA BARBARA NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS BID NO. 3781B Sealed proposals for Bid No. 3781B for the Montecito Street Bridge Replacement and Pedestrian Improvements Project will be received in the Purchasing Office, 310 E. Bid Acceptance. The City of Santa Barbara (“City”) will accept sealed bids for its Police Department Memorial Statue Project (“Project”), by or before Thursday, November 30, 2017, at 3:00 p.m., at its Purchasing Office, located at 310 E. Ortega Street, Santa Barbara, California 93101, at which time and place the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud.

Project Information.

2.1 Location and Description. The Project is located at 215 East Figueroa Street, Santa Barbara, California, and is described as follows: relocate existing 20 gallon planter, provide all required tree protection measures, clearing and grading landscaping adjacent to existing walkway, new reinforced concrete slab, reinforced concrete pedestal and reinforced masonry retaining wall, and new lighting. Sculpture and sculpture anchoring to be furnished by the City.

2.2 Time for Completion. The planned timeframe for commencement and completion of construction of the Project is: 20 working days from issuance of the Notice to Proceed.

2.3 Engineer’s Estimate. The Engineer’s estimate for construction of this Project is: $25,000.

3.1 License. This Project requires a valid California contractor’s license for the following classification(s): A-General Engineering Contractor or B-General Building Contractor.

3.2 DIR Registration. City will not accept a Bid Proposal from or enter into the Contract with a bidder, without proof that the bidder and its Subcontractors are registered with the California Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) to perform public work under Labor Code section 1725.5, subject to limited legal exceptions.

Contract Documents. The plans, specifications, bid forms and contract documents for the Project, and any addenda thereto (“Contract Documents”) may be downloaded from City’s website at: SantaBarbaraCA.gov/ebidboard. Bid Security. The Bid Proposal must be accompanied by bid security of ten percent of the maximum bid amount, in the form of a cashier’s or certified check made payable to City, or a bid bond executed by a surety licensed to do business in the State of California on the Bid Bond form included with the Contract Documents. The bid security must guarantee that, within ten days after City’s issuance of the notice of award of the Contract, the bidder will execute the Contract and submit the payment and performance bonds, insurance certificates and endorsements, and all other documentation required by the Contract Documents.

6.

Prevailing Wage Requirements.

6.1 General. This Project is subject to the prevailing wage requirements applicable to the locality in which the Work is to be performed for each craft, classification or type of worker needed to perform the Work, including employer payments for health and welfare, pension, vacation, apprenticeship and similar purposes.

Bidders are hereby notified that pursuant to provisions of Section 1770, et seq., of the Labor Code of the State of California, the Contractor shall pay its employees the general prevailing rate of wages as determined by the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations.

In addition, the Contractor shall be responsible for compliance with the requirements of Section 1777.5 of the California Labor Code relating to apprentice public works contracts.

Per California Civil Code Section 9550, a payment bond in the amount of 100% of the bid total will be required from the successful bidder for bids exceeding $25,000. The bond must be provided within 10 calendar days from notice of award and prior to the performance of any work.

The proposal shall be accompanied by a proposal guaranty bond in the sum of at least 10% of the total amount of the proposal, or alternatively by a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Owner in the sum of at least 10% of the total amount of the proposal.

A separate performance bond in the amount of 100% of the bid total will be required from the successful bidder. The bond must be provided within 10 calendar days from the notice to award and prior to the performance of any work.

A contractor or subcontractor shall not be qualified to bid on, be listed in a bid proposal, subject to the requirements of Section 4104 of the Public Contract Code, or engage in the performance of any contract for public work, as defined in this chapter, unless currently registered and qualified to perform public work pursuant to Section 1725.5. It is not a violation of this section for an unregistered contractor to submit a bid that is authorized by Section 7029.1 of the Business and Professions Code or by Section 10164 or 20103.5 of the Public Contract Code, provided the contractor is registered to perform public work pursuant to Section 1725.5 at the time the contract is awarded.

License and Registration Requirements.

6.2 Rates. The prevailing rates are on file with City and available online at http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR. Each Contractor and Subcontractor must pay no less than the specified rates to all workers employed to work on the Project. The schedule of per diem wages is based upon a working day of eight hours. The rate for holiday and overtime work must be at least time and one-half.

6.3 Compliance. The Contract will be subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR, under Labor Code section 1771.4.

Performance and Payment Bonds. The successful bidder will be required to provide performance and payment bond for 100% of the Contract Price regardless of contract dollar amount.

8.

Substitution of Securities. Substitution of appropriate securities in lieu of retention amounts from progress payments is permitted under Public Contract Code section 22300.

9.

Subcontractor List. Each bidder must submit, with its Bid Proposal, the name, location of the place of business, California contractor license number, DIR registration number, and percentage of the Work to be performed (based on the Base Bid) for each Subcontractor that will perform work or service or fabricate or install work for the prime contractor in excess of one-half of 1% of the bid price, using the Subcontractor List form included with the Contract Documents.

10.

Instructions to Bidders. All bidders should carefully review the Instructions to Bidders before submitting a Bid Proposal.

11.

Bidders’ Conference. A bidders’ conference will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the following location: 215 East Figueroa Street, Santa Barbara, CA for the purpose of acquainting all prospective bidders with the Contract Documents and the Worksite. The bidders’ conference is not mandatory.

12.

Retention. The percentage of retention that will be withheld from progress payments is five percent (5%).

Breaking the Ice, Part II

I

n the late 1700s, it was possible to walk from Manhattan across the frozen river to New Jersey during most winters. During these cycles, the price of wheat in gold Dutch guilders varied by nearly a factor of 20 to 1. In a four-year period, there were snowstorms in the U.S. as far south as Virginia in late May/June. Crop failures were massive and many starved and died of exposure. The climate probably helped Washington win the war, as the supply of food and material from England was slow and unpredictable. It was also tough in England and certainly impacted its support of the war.

It is possible that, except for the lousy weather, we would still be under British rule. Good old George really could throw a dollar across the Potomac… it was only about one- or 200-hundred feet wide at some points and certainly aided in the troop movement for the surprise attack on British and Hessian troops during Christmas of 1776 that began to turn the tide of the war.

As the mini ice age progressed, temperatures dropped in English wine country. Grape and wine production moved southward to Italy and France. The Brits could no longer make wine efficiently, but that did not stop them from getting their alcohol. Nope, they switched to cold-tolerant crops such as barley and rye grains for their drinking spirits – voila, the birth of Scotch and rye whiskey – and those drinking habits remain so to this day; all weather-related.

Luckily, as the mini ice age was winding down in the early 1800s, the increased planting of the potato in Europe – a food unique and imported from the Americas – saved much of Europe, England, and Ireland from starvation. It would grow in colder climates, had a lot of starch easily converted by the human body to sugar and was easily stored, thus saving vast numbers of people all the way to the steppes in Russia from starvation.

Unfortunately, it was also a nightshade plant, and many varieties were poisonous to varying degrees, attacking the immune system.

as affected because they had both developed an immunity to the mildly poisonous plant, and selected less poisonous varieties, though to this day, some South American potatoes are deadly poison to humans.

Eventually, a suitable potato variety was universally adopted, but that variety proved susceptible to disease and crop failures. That led to widespread famine in Ireland and other parts of the old world, because vast populations had adopted that type of potato as an almost singular food supply.

Remember the Irish potato famine?

In the early 1800s through 1847, one in five Irish citizens perished from starvation or poison, and another one in five migrated to the U.S. The famine triggered one of the largest population migrations in U.S. history. Floods of Irish and European immigrants swept into the United States, causing radical upheavals and dislocations in labor and financial markets. The positive side was that the cheap labor and indentured servant populations made the United States a leading supplier of woven fabrics.

Slavery provided the labor for cotton production to feed the northern mills with cheap cotton; immigrants supplied cheap labor in the mills, and the plentiful waterpower of New England supplied the energy to run the mills. A lot of this transition came about because of the failure of the importation of an American crop to Europe that failed… much of it weather-related. The potato, slavery, low-priced labor, and water energy were part of the secret weapon that was the undoing of English dominance in the fabric industry and other industries as well.

“The Coming Ice Age”

Fast forward to more recent times.

I remember the screaming headlines in The New York Times in 1971 that predicted, according to a “universal agreement of all educated scientists and climatologists” (does that term sound familiar?), that Earth was headed for a cataclysmic cold age in the next 30 to 50 years. Many of the prognosticators stated that the next 50 years would be counted as the coldest

She will manage admissions, strategic marketing, branding, communications, creative production, public relations, and social media programs.

She previously served at Fuller Theological Seminary and Biola University for 30 years. “It’s an extraordinary opportunity to join Westmont in its 80th year of existence,” she says. “I’m grateful to President Beebe for giving me the honor and challenge of bringing innovative leadership to a newly developed enrollment, marketing, and communications position.

Neller established marketing departments for Biola and Fuller, and dramatically grew enrollment and increased levels of institutional reputation and awareness at both institutions. She graduated from Bethany University and earned a Master of Arts from Cal State Fullerton.

She is fluent in conversational Spanish and has increased international and multicultural student enrollment. She has served and led in many mentoring programs for young women. She and her husband, Brett, have two sons, and the youngest, Mitchell, is a junior at Westmont.

According to the “concerned scientists” of the time, we had to take immediate steps to prepare for the oncoming spectacle of doom and disaster. One of the aging prognosticators left over from that period is

now shouting from the highest hill that we are doomed because of higher temperatures. This, at a time when his previous forecasts would have us freezing to death in large numbers by 2017. What we see again are headlines searching for dollars without much consideration for science or even a smattering of recent history. For the most part, the current wave of armchair climatologists is not much different.

Volleyball Heading into Final Stretch

The No. 7 Westmont volleyball team will have its final tune-ups this weekend before heading into the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament and the NAIA National Tournament.

The Warriors battle William Jessup University on Friday, November 3, at 7 pm and Menlo College on Saturday, November 4, at noon, both in Murchison Gym. Westmont has an impressive 28-3 record, having only lost to No. 4 Park (Missouri), No. 10 Columbia (Missouri), and No. 13 College of Idaho.

The Warrior offense is led by junior Libby Dahlberg of Sacramento, junior Samantha Neely of Whittier, and sophomore Cassidy Rea of Ventura.

Head coach Patti Cook, was a threetime NAIA All-American as a player for Westmont. After graduating in 2004, she played professional beach volleyball, including three years fulltime on the AVP Tour.

Bridge is set in the mid-1950s in Brooklyn and tells the story of a longshoreman whose fatal mistake changes his family forever; the gritty and explosive story has themes of immigration, community, pride, and secret love that still echo 60 years later. Lear comes via a 90-minute Naked Shakes adaptation, which features two separate complete casts alternating in exploring the stripped-down story of a king igniting a chain reaction of chaos as he discovers his own humanity and mortality and teeters on the brink of madness. Nineteen-seventies funk band War could have cemented its reputation on that peace-loving number by itself, but the group, which also fuses R&B, rock, and Latin styles drawn from the Los Angeles ghettos where they grew up, has had a long and varied career. As a young classically trained artist, Hollywood born Tari, who shares Hungarian roots with Borge, was part of the opening ceremonies for the 1984 Olympics, playing George Gershwin’s quintessential American composition “Rhapsody in Blue” along with 83 other pianists at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Thirty-three years later, deep into a career as a performer and recording artist, Tari is now a recent Santa Barbara resident whose latest album, Fiesta Suites, pays tribute to the city’s Old Spanish Days celebration. The concert at the Lobero Theatre tonight will also serve as the premiere of Tari’s “Star Wars Piano Medley,” a piano arrangement of music from Star Wars Episodes 1 & 4, focusing on the famous themes composed by John Williams, who, not coincidentally, also wielded the baton at the L.A. Some would put It’s a Wonderful Life in that category, as evidenced by the furor that surrounded the decision to colorize the Frank Capra 1946 black-and-white classic about idealistic small-town hero George Bailey, to say nothing about the uproar over a sequel announced in 2013. Then there’s It’s a Wonderful Life, a Live Radio Play. Joe Landry’s 2011 adaptation of the tale of a guardian angel saving Bailey from suicide by showing him the impact of his life on others is a lovingly evocative take on the piece, which, according to The New York Times review at least, “has done absolutely no harm to the original. In fact, it has added another layer of nostalgia.” SBCC Theatre Arts Department is presenting a student showcase of the work, in which Katie Laris directs a dozen actors including a sound-effects man as they deliver the lines of all the characters from the movie as it might have been performed at an old radio studio.
