California Screaming

A

fter a weekend of Thanksgiving gobbling and gorging, most of us are more interested in waist cuts than tax cuts, but the Senate is about to make its move on tax reform… and Californians are nervous.

Voter registration in the State of California runs 44% Democrat versus 29% Republican; California is definitely a dark-blue state, especially along the coast. Both of California’s U.S. Senators and 39 of 53 House members are Democrats.

In Santa Barbara County District 1, which includes Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, a large swath of Santa Barbara, and Cuyama Valley, the party count is 50% registered Democrat voters and only 20% registered Republicans.

Independent voters along the coast tend to support Democrats.

On tax relief, California voters are a little closer, according to research from the Public Policy Institute of California: 43% say they prefer paying lower taxes and receiving fewer government services, while 48% say they are willing to pay higher taxes for more government services.

We wonder how many of those 48% pay any taxes at all, or if they are saying they’d be happy to raise your taxes to pay for their services?

Richard covered the Royal Family for Britain’s Daily Mirror and Daily Mail, and was an editor on New York Magazine. He was also a national anchor on CBS, a commentator on ABC Network News, gossip on The Joan Rivers Show and Geraldo Rivera, host on E! TV, a correspondent on the syndicated show Extra, and a commentator on the KTLA Morning News. He moved to Montecito ten years ago.

ontecito animal activist Gretchen Lieff has been exploring more liquid assets!

Peripatetic Gretchen has just returned to our rarefied enclave from Tanzania after volunteering her services to H2OpenDoors, an organization devoted to helping solve the global water crisis.

“It focuses on third-world countries and uses special technology to turn filthy polluted water into clean, safe sustainable drinking water.” she tells me.

Gretchen went to the town of Nhobola near Lake Victoria in the north of the country where women have to walk for miles, often in the dark “through terribly dangerous conditions” to provide drinkable water for their thirsty families and animals.

“It is heartbreaking to see these desperate women throughout Africa risking their lives in such a way,” says Gretchen. “Not only did we help this community by providing safe drinking water but also gave them the ability to sell the water to other villages and use this new source of money to build schools and provide medical care.

“It felt so good to help such lovely people... to help themselves by leaving them with a truly sustainable clean water solution.”

After leaving Tanzania, Gretchen traveled to Zimbabwe, which just dumped its despotic president Mugabe, and went on safari to the Serengeti.

limate change is happening whether one “believes” in it or not, and 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human activity is the cause. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have dug up past living things and burned them, something that has thrown off the balance under which life as we know it has evolved. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is necessary for life and held steady at 350 parts per million (or thereabouts) for millions of years.

During the past 200 years of human activity, CO2 levels have increased to over 400 parts per million. This excess CO2 traps heat and creates the warming conditions we are now seeing. Our oceans have served as a heat “sink” and have also warmed, creating the warm water and warm air double-whammy that intensifies storm systems.

Just last week, 15,000 scientists from the world over signed a letter saying that we must act quickly to reduce emissions before the world

as we know it changes forever. Two years ago, nearly every country in the world signed a pact to reduce emissions in order to avoid catastrophic warming before the end of this century.

Switching to renewable energy is the solution, and this is not a threat to our economy. California has decoupled from fossil fuels in the past decade and has seen economic growth continue. China is investing billions in solar and wind energy and has pledged a speedy transition to electric vehicles while continuing to be the world’s second-most prosperous nation.

Many other countries are moving forward with the transition to renewable energy and an electrified transportation system while seeing economic growth. Clinging to the fossil fuel economy is setting the U.S. back and positioning us as buyers rather than sellers of future

or the past 12 years, Hattie Beresford has written a local history column for the Montecito

Journal called “The Way It Was,” in which she

has been able to indulge her long-standing interest in the people and events of Santa Barbara’s past

that determined its present. In addition, together with the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, she

co-edited and produced the memoir of local artist Elizabeth Eaton Burton entitled My Santa Barbara

Scrap Book and wrote two Noticias, their historical journal. She is also a regular contributor to the

Montecito Journal Magazine writing the column entitled “Moguls and Mansions.”

When I went to my first opera it was the Opera House in Naples, Italy there were no subtitles. We would read our book that told all the stories before we went, so we had some idea what was going on.

Fast-forward to Santa Barbara, prior to the show there was a patron’s reception and dinner in the Founders Room at the Granada. The supporters looked like they stepped out of a more elegant period in time with tuxes for the gentlemen and long gowns for the ladies. The tables were done in black and white with stunning feather centerpieces. The china was equally rich in gold and cream. The diners looked like they should have opera glasses dangling from their necks. Dinner was gourmet by Duo and beautifully served.

A Cut above: Richie Among Nominees

elf-made Montecito business owner Richie Ramirez, owner of Richie’s Barber Shop on Coast Village Road (CVR) is one of five nominees for the title and responsibilities of the Santa Barbara Young Professional [SBYP] 2017. It’s a role that continues till December 2018.

To find out more, I contacted attorney Andrea G. Posey, Young Professionals board member who was the SBYP 2015. She added, “In March 1996, the SBYPO was founded and led by Dan Encell, with members Jim Hazard, J. Paul Gignac, Amanda Thomas, Shana Bright, Michael Magne, Laird Cagan, and Laura Carlos. In 2010, we introduced the Young Professional of the Year Award, presented at our Annual Holiday Gala to an individual, age 45 or younger, who has demonstrated the traits and actions of an exemplary young professional in our community. The five finalists for 2017 selected by the board are Cassidy Arnold, Danielle Hazarian, Kat Hitchcock, Richie Ramirez, and Marine Schumann.”

Richie’s CV shows a strong and dedicated track record for establishing his own successful barber shop business in Montecito and winning the SB INDE’s Best of in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Starting out in town with an established shop near Vons, he jumped on his own, and now employs six barbers – five are women, a game-changer. Having been there, he looks to help others succeed, especially those less fortunate with a huge soft spot for kids.

To keep balance, he practices various martial arts and is a classic motorcycle enthusiast. Richie is an active member of the SB Chamber of Commerce, fund-raises for the Boys & Girls Club of SB, the Orfalea Foundation, Jodi House Brain Injury Support Center, CASA SB, Transition House, SB Police Department, the “Movember” Foundation USA, Toys for Tots, Relief for Vegas, and Relief for Sonoma County.

Richie and I talked about it at his shop: Q. Please tell us about your nomination for Young Professional of 2017.

A. I’m a small business owner that tries to give back to communities that have supported my barber shop for the last seven years. It may be on a smaller level, but I’m grateful for the fact that I was nominated.

If you are chosen, how will you interpret the role and how will you use it for the community, other young professionals, and yourself?

Honestly, I’m just thankful to be a part of the top five nominated. My fellow nominees are amazing! However, if I were chosen I would give it right back to the community. I would like to get involved with kids and be a positive role model just as I had it when I first started. My team and I are discussing a future program to mentor young people with an interest in barbering or becoming a small business owner.

Who are your mentors?

I’ve been lucky to work in a community where many successful business owners live! Pete Jordano (CEO of Jordano’s food service), Shawn Stussy (creator of Stussy clothing), Emmet Hawks (Hawks & Co Realtor), Paul Orfalea (founder of Kinkos), and Andy Puzder (CEO of Carl’s Junior) would be my top five! These men have taken me under their wing. They’ve always been there for me. I look up to them, and they give me great advice in all aspects of my life. How did you grow your business from yourself to six barbers?

Again, the community. Mostly word of mouth in the beginning. We try to stay noticed on social media. If you give a great service, people will come back and bring their friends!

And five of six are women...

Honesty, it just happened. The first female barber was referred. She then recruited a friend, and so on. All our female barbers knew how to cut, but everyone still goes through a training period to cut “The Richie’s Barber Shop” way, which is really just attention to detail from start to finish.

What are your plans for your shop?

There are some great things in the works, but most importantly we would like to keep growing our business! The more we grow, the more we can give back! That’s very important to not only me, but my crew as well.

We are all on the same page and that’s very important to me.

How did you get into martial arts, and what does it mean in your life?

I’ve been into fitness most of my life. I got into boxing 13 years ago.

That evolved into Jujitsu, wrestling, and kickboxing at Paragon Academy.

It’s a huge outlet for me! It’s challenging both physically and mentally.

Recently, my team at Paragon took us to Thailand, where I trained with an Aka Thailand trainer in the Muay Thai style for 10 days. It was a great experience.

And your soft spot for kids and others in need comes from...?

I’ve had such great mentors in my life. I guess it’s just my way of paying it forward.

Stringer Theory: Chanting for Conscious Healing

I

n his most recent email missive, Yoga Soup founder/owner Eddie Ellner mused on how his effort 12 years ago to “construct the place that I’d want to go to when I felt I had no place to go” eventually turned into the thriving consciousness-raising hub as he eventually realized that he was “surrounded by a loving, supportive, and appreciative community.”

Kirtan singer Dave Stringer – who back then was not long out of his singer-songwriter/filmmaker days – was one of the first visiting performers helping to open Yoga Soup a dozen years ago and has since gone on to help expand the genre of call-and-response devotional singing beyond studios to the mainstream. This weekend, the two are reuniting for the first time in several years when Stringer returns for a special holiday concert and chant-fest concert at Yoga Soup that begins with a food court with vendors selling unique gifts in the main building before moving to the studio for the music.

Stringer – who will be accompanied by singer-songwriters Joss Jaffe (who was raised in Montecito) and Sheila Nicholls, plus local musicians Sudama, Mark Kennedy and Philippo Franchini – talked about the concepts and the concert over the phone.

On Entertainment Baxter’s Ties That Bind

T

he world “family” shows up in the title of no fewer than half a dozen TV shows on Meredith Baxter’s list of acting credits, from an early guest shot on The Partridge Family, to her four-year (and double Emmy-winning) stint at the end of the 1970s on Family to her famed seven-year run as Elyse on the hit sitcom Family Ties. The actress herself credits her TV family with helping her cope with marital problems at home. So, it’s no surprise that 30 years later Baxter is still performing with her TV husband from the latter series, this next time reprising one of her cherished roles as Melissa in A.R. Gurney’s two-character epistolary classic, Love Letters, opposite Michael Gross’s Andrew.

The two sit side by side at tables and reading half a century’s worth of the notes, letters, and cards in which they discuss their hopes, dreams, disappointments, and defeats.

Baxter became a permanent resident of Santa Barbara just 13 months ago, buying a home near the Mission with her spouse, general contractor Nancy Locke. While Baxter and Gross have previously collaborated more than 20 times on Love Letters, this weekend’s performances – a benefit for Speaking of Stories – marks her official local debut with the play. She talked about the show and more earlier this week.

Q. How does your time on Family Ties still resonate for you?

A. I did it for several years, so I have a lot of fondness. But what mostly stood out was the people I got to work with. It was a lot of mutual respect and admiration between all of us. We

We’ve done a couple of TV movies together over the years and we’re still good buddies. I really love the play. It’s very moving. The whole idea of not being able to connect – the ships in the night, the missed opportunities aspects, when life takes you in different directions. I find that very heartbreaking. It’s very appealing to be able to walk that character through that. I still like working with Michael and seeing what he’s bringing that’s new. He’s such a seasoned performer and a joy to work with.

What about you? How does your approach change over the years?

It’s subtly different. I’m older every time I do it and have more experiences to draw on, a new idea of how I want to approach it.... Everything in life colors it. That’s why it’s a play that just gets richer the more I do it.

Twenty-five years ago when I was a much younger woman, there was one level, and God knows I hope I learned something since then – perhaps a ruefulness, a wisdom, a wryness, all sorts of different colors that come with the years.

Can I ask you about your personal life?

It’s only been eight years since you came out as a lesbian, but back then you were truly worried about ruining your career.

How is it to look back?

There have been huge leaps, it’s gone amazingly fast from being a huge stigma to be gay or lesbian to outward defense of and almost celebration of transgenders across the board, even on TV. But at the same time, most of the hate crimes in the U.S. today are still perpetrated against the LGBT community. So, it’s looking good, but there’s still a long way to go.

Do you think it hurt your career?

It didn’t help. There is already a certain ageism going on. It’s hard to know what to point to... the industry doesn’t know what to do with a 60-year-old woman. While male actors have their girlfriends who are at least 20 years

younger than they are; you can count on one hand the female actresses who gets any parts with substance. Any job that comes up for anyone over 50, all the woman in town are trying to get that part.

Outside of acting itself, you’ve had other challenges, from an abusive marriage to surviving breast cancer, to coming to terms with your sexual orientation, all of which you talked about in your book few years ago. And I saw on TV clips how you persevered by not wanting to perceive yourself as a victim. How did you come to that?

The only thing I can say about that is sobriety. I grew up and became a sober woman. A 12-step program allowed me to follow the process that revealed myself to me – who I was, how I behaved and how I made the choices that I did. That had all been lost to me because I was so busy feeling sorry for myself since my childhood. I just saw a New Yorker cartoon the other day, and I laughed for a moment before I was horrified. There’s a woman lying on the ground, and she says, “Someone dropped me as a baby,” the idea being you stay dropped, but that’s up to you. It wasn’t who I wanted to be. I didn’t want to perceive myself that way anymore.

Speaking of perception, I saw the clip of you on the Ken Boxer cable show recently.

Everyone is astonished that you’re 70!

I don’t want to ask the clichéd question about your secret, but what’s your secret?

I’m currently working with the most amazing trainer here in Santa Barbara who has helped me to do what you need to do without hurting. I feel so much stronger. I’d attribute a lot to that. Otherwise, I’m just a happy person and I have good genes. What else can I say?

Christmas at Pemberley

Andrew Barnicle freely admitted he had some doubts about signing on to helm Ensemble Theatre’s holiday show Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, an imagined sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, despite scoring successes with all three of his previous directing turns at the Santa Barbara company in just two short years.

“I’ll be honest, I was skeptical,” he said over the phone last week. “And I didn’t even know why they wanted me. I do understand historically how things work. But quite frankly, I figured he would want a female whose sensibilities seemed more attuned to Austen than mine. Then I read it and I liked it.

“But the real litmus test was my wife.”

That would be the woman who served alongside him as volunteer dramaturg at Laguna Playhouse, where Barnicle was the artistic director, helming 40 plays and producing another 80 during his 20 year tenure.

His wife, Barnicle said, is “the biggest Jane Austen freak in the world.”

“When I gave it to her, she said, ‘No, nobody would try to write that.’

But then she read it one sitting and declared it delightful. So I knew I was good to go.”

The Barnicles aren’t the only ones impressed by Miss Bennet. Only a year after debuting, the play has become a regional holiday hit, while its co-author, Lauren Gunderson, at 35, is said to be the most produced playwright in the country for the 2017-18 season.

“She’s done a really accurate job of recreating the style and syntax of Jane Austen, the circumventing language that dances around the truth with that weird veneer of politeness of the era before getting down to it,” Barnicle said.

The plot of Miss Bennet concerns the “lost middle sister, Mary, who is neglected in Pride and Prejudice, just a geeky teenager that nobody played attention to. But now, just two years later, she’s having her moment in the sun,” he said. “It’s about her coming of age and finding out who she is in the shadow of her sisters.”

The action takes place at the titled estate, the distinguished home of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy in the early 19th century. The happy couple have invited the entire family to visit for Christmas, and they gather in the drawing room as the play unfolds.

The Metamorphosis Has Officially Begun

T

he Santa Barbara Rescue Mission’s $10-million renovation is now in its first phase of the estimated 16-month project.

Interior walls and ceilings are demolished and gutted down to its wooden bones. The carpet and linoleum floors are peeled away to the shelter’s original concrete slab on the first story, to thick heavy plywood on the second.

What was recently the last functioning bathroom for the dozens of homeless guests that arrive every day for food, shelter, and a place to sleep, is nothing more than a hollowed-out room with no doors or lighting, just old black pipes still tangled in the walls of stucco and original 2x4s. And the old-weathered tile on the bathroom floors and walls – that too is gone.

As a result, the one and only bathroom for the homeless men and women is on the second floor, and shared with the 35 men enrolled in the drug and alcohol treatment program, the only inpatient rehab in the City of

Santa Barbara that is completely free of charge. The 53-year-old non-profit organization can currently house 22 women and 18 men overnight.

Of course, these numbers are temporary, and because of the private funded refurbishment, according to the Rescue Mission’s news column online, “the shelter capacity will double.”

President of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission Rolf Geyling says this renovation will be a major improvement and better benefit the homeless community, especially the women who will not only gain a large bathroom of their own in the new-andimproved sector of the facility. These alterations are aimed to provide safer conditions for the females altogether, and ultimately, their overall bed availability will increase as well.

In the interim, the few beds that are available, of course, will be given to the most guests who are: the elderly, the sick, or any physically and/ or mentally disabled person has the

advantage over a younger, more mobile guest. Unfortunately, those who are turned away must join the men and women who are scattered about the city, who hide in the clandestine areas of the beach and sides of the freeway. Or along East Yanonali Street in plain sight, where some continue to live and sleep against the wall of the sanitation plant, under the same solitary pine tree in what a “walltenant” sardonically calls, since they are less than a mile from the Pacific,

Myth #1

GOP Tax Cuts Will Only Benefit Millionaires and Billionaires.

The House plan contains $228 billion in tax relief for individual taxpayers.

It will reduce the current number of tax brackets from seven to four, but the top rate remains at 39.6%. There would be a net reduction in taxes across all income groups, including middle- and low-income filers. A family of four people with an average household income of $72,641 would save $1,200 on their tax bill.

According to the liberal Chicago Tribune, the House tax reform plan, if it becomes law, will result in nearly 81 million federal income-tax filers (or 47.5% of all filers) paying nothing (zippo, zilch, not a penny) in 2018 in federal taxes.

That number will be up from 2017, when an estimated 44% of filers will pay no federal income taxes.

The new plan nearly doubles the standard deduction from $12,600 to $24,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly, and half that for single payers.

Here’s how a married couple with $50,000 or with $100,000 in adjusted gross income would fare under the current tax plan (2017) and under the proposed House-approved plan (2018).

In addition, under the House Plan, the child credit exemption will be boosted from $1,000 per child to $1,600, favoring lower- and middle-income families in their early years that tend to have larger families with young children.

Mortgage interest would be deductible, but only up to a $500,000 mortgage, again penalizing the rich and the two-home owners.

Myth #2

Tax Simplification is No Big Deal It has been more than 30 years since Washington, D.C., has passed significant tax reform. For 30 years, tassel-toed lobbyists have inserted exemption after exemption for clients who pay for privileged treatment in our tax system.

Under the House Plan, an estimated 94% of filers, will not itemize deductions, preferring to take the increased standard deduction and filing a postcard return.

This would save a major portion of the $195 billion a year taxpayers spend on accountants and tax preparers. By filing for the standard deduction, taxpayers will no longer spend six billion hours per year of their own time, for tax record keeping, tax preparation, and compliance costs.

Myth #3

Removing the Federal Deduction for State and Local Taxes is Unfair to High-Tax States Such as California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Illinois.

Forgive me, but there is something deliciously different in finally punishing big tax, big spenders in Sacramento, Albany, Trenton, Hartford, and Springfield.

These big-spender politicians, who are convinced they know best how to take money from working people and bestow it on nonworkers, have gleefully

passed their high-tax burden onto other low-tax states’ taxpayers via their deductions of state and local taxes and property taxes. A radical solution would be to cut taxes and spending in these Democrat domains, making it more desirable for their residents to work, retire, and invest.

Myth #4

“We are kicking 13 million people off health insurance to give tax cuts to the wealthy,” says Chuck Schumer.

Senator Schuman can’t even formulate a good lie when he says, “The Republicans are paying for tax cuts with reductions in Medicare.” Changes to Medicare or Medicaid are not mentioned in either the House or Senate tax reform bill.

The truth is that nobody is being kicked off health insurance. Instead, 13 million taxpayers who have elected not to buy ObamaCare coverage would no longer be forced to pay an annual fine (or a “tax” according to Supreme Court justice John Roberts) for not purchasing mandatory government healthcare insurance. Over 10 years, an estimated $338 billion dollars would be taken out of the government’s pocket and put back where it belongs, in the taxpayers’ pocket, especially benefiting the young and healthy.

For 2018, Santa Barbara County will be down to one approved ACA (Affordable Care Act) insurance provider – Blue Shield – after Anthem Blue Cross pulled out of the market. For a family of four, annual ACA premium costs are expected to reach $30,000 a year, including an expensive $24,000 annual basic coverage package with a $7,000 deductible. Remember this old Obama promise: “On average, every family will save $2,500 on their health insurance premiums.”

Myth #5

Cutting the Corporate Tax Rate From 35% to 20% is a Bad Idea Because It Rewards Big Corporations, Millionaires, and Billionaires.

Cutting the corporate tax rate from 35% – the highest tax rate in the industrialized world – to 20% makes U.S. businesses more competitive, boosts economic growth, increases capital investment in the U.S. for new factories and businesses and stimulates job creation. The average corporate tax rate in the developed world is 25%; tax havens including Ireland (12.5%) or the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands offer a zero corporate tax rate.

Small-business owners who do not choose to incorporate to gain personal liability protection will be allowed to reduce their taxes. The House bill reduces their top rate to 25% with some limitations. The Senate bill would allow them to claim a deduction equal to 17.4 % of their business income. Both plans address small-business tax relief.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “corporate tax reform is a serious attempt to fix a broken U.S. tax code that has festered for 30 years and made America increasingly uncompetitive as a destination for mobile global capital. The GOP reforms would help the economy and make it harder for corporations to cheat.”

U.S. companies such as Apple and Google would be able to repatriate their foreign income, creating an enormous pool of capital for new business creation, driving up the demand for U.S. workers and driving up wages.

Potential Losers in GOP Tax Reform

There will be a small number of people, estimated at 8%, who may pay higher taxes even though tax rates will be reduced. Mostly they will be wealthy Americans in high-tax states who will lose their federal exemption for state and local taxes, and their exemption for property taxes above the $10,000 threshold.

That would include me, but I am more than willing to pay higher taxes to demonstrate to tax-and-spend liberals in California how much we actually pay in taxes to deliver our substandard roads, humdrum schools, and runaway state, county, and teacher public pensions and healthcare costs.

Promises to Keep

R

ecently, at one of those pleasant “curbside free libraries,” which have lately become so popular, I picked up a book called I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. I was intrigued by the title, for a personal reason. No one ever promised me a rose garden, either – and I never particularly wanted one – but I got one anyway, and though I don’t own it, you might say I acquired it by marriage.

I’m talking about the Santa Barbara City Rose Garden – a municipal treasure, which happens to be located just a few yards from the house where Dorothy and I have lived since 1973. It lies on our side of a sort of open park stretching between us and the Old Spanish Mission.

Dorothy’s family has been in Santa Barbara for generations, and we moved here so she could be near them. Our house was originally her mother’s.

The Rose Garden, maintained by a devoted corps of volunteers, is virtually our back yard. Too bad I’m not enough of a rose lover to take an interest in all the varieties. Even more a pity, because I assume from the book’s title that such an asset is one symbolizing an easy joyful life.

But I’m really more interested in promises than in rose gardens, anyway. Robert Frost, in one of his most famous poems told us that he had …promises to keep, And miles to go, before I sleep.

We don’t know what those promises were – and we don’t want to know.

Those two lines stand as a metaphor for the essence and tragedy of all our lives: we must live, and fulfill our obligations, before we die.

But our lives are built on other promises – especially financial promises to pay and wedding vows. There are also, of course, politicians’ promises – but few of us give them any more credit than they deserve.

But what about the most important promises of all – those made by God – and one in particular concerning land ownership. There are many mentions in the Old Testament about these – but in the first one, made to Abraham, and bestowed upon his descendants, not only is the specific territory delineated, (as running from the Nile to the Euphrates), but all its then-current inhabitants – 10 different peoples – are named – all presumably 30 November – 7 December 2017

to be dispossessed (which could only mean eradication, or, at the very least, enslavement).

This was the pledge that enabled the Hebrews to claim a “Promised Land,” and to consider themselves a “Chosen People” – thus prompting this witticism several thousand years later:

Odd or not, that alleged promise, and the hopes and dreams built upon it, are, as we are all only too aware, still the basis of much trouble in our world.

I’m more interested in promises than in rose gardens

The story of the transformation of those aspirations into a political reality – the epic called “Zionism” – is to me one of the most enthralling chapters of modern history (perhaps in part because in my late teens, I was able to spend a summer in the State of Israel, which was then only five years old.) It centers around a book called The Jewish State, published in 1896 by a young journalist named Theodore Herzl, who came from an Austrian Judaic background, but had been thoroughly assimilated. His most famous quote was “If you will it, it is no dream.”

But of course, there have been many other Promised Lands. One is the spiritual home of the Mormons in Utah, to which they were led by Brigham Young, who in 1847, overlooking what is now Salt Lake City, is said to have uttered the words “This is the Place.”

And Martin Luther King, on April 3, 1968, the day before he was killed, spoke more metaphorically of the ultimate triumph of his cause when he said that he had been allowed to go “up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over and I’ve seen the Promised Land.

I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!”

Since we began today in a rose garden, I’d like to end by taking you back there, to remind you of that famous poetry competition in Spain, in which the prizes were three roses. Third prize was a rose of silver. Second prize was a rose of gold. And the grand prize was: a real rose.

stand that we’re trafficking in sounds that are inherently either soothing or can convey some kind of meaning. When I break them down, you get to collaborate in seeing what state they are meant to evoke, which works across cultures, and that the names of gods and goddesses are representations of philosophical concepts and approaches.

Similarly, you have studied and embraced the science behind Kirtan – the neuroscience of music and meditation, mantras, and molecules. Why does that matter?

Partly because I want to know how it works. How is it that I can start out singing in a terrible mood and end up feeling elevated and connected as a result of just singing what are basically non-sensical syllables? To me, having an understanding of how we are neuro-equipped for ecstasy, and especially how it is that we are driven to experience it on a collective level, is important. I love looking into that whole hypothesis that consciousness is something we as humans share but don’t possess.

In composing kirtan songs, what drives your decisions on melody, instrumentation?

And for that matter, when played live, the rhythm and tempo, et cetera?

The ragas and melodies are deeply within us, and for me as a writer it’s partly a matter of discovery. They’re elemental. They’re not arbitrary. So, the effort is to connect to something deeper. When I do that, it automatically produces a connective response. (As far as live), skillful kirtan musicians know how to listen and connect organically. It’s like what drives a flock of birds or school of fish. What is the underlying consciousness? Who decides? We do, collectively, by listening to each other, and the audience singing the music back. What causes us to speed up, or drop out, or change the groove is attunement and a feeling of “rightness.”

The Power of Meaning

Emily Esfahani Smith, the TED Talks favorite and author of The Power of Meaning: Crafting a Life that Matters, knows that there’s more to life than endlessly searching for happiness. The positive psychology instructor and editor at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, Smith draws on psychology, philosophy, and literature to postulate that pursuing meaning in life is ultimately more fulfilling and leads to a richer life. Smith, who writes about the human experience – why we are the way we are, and how we can find grace and meaning in a world that is full of suffering – gives a public lecture titled “The Power of Meaning: Making Your Life, Work and Relationships Matter” at UCSB Campbell Hall at 7:30 pm this Thursday, November 30. Rupa Meditation founder Tom G. O’Brien, a Montecito native, is back in town and hosting his monthly Full Moon Meditations again. Only with the winter fast approaching, you’ll have to imagine the luminous orb as the events have moved indoors for the next several offerings. The next program, slated for 8 pm this Saturday, December 2, takes place at The Base, the new fitness and wellness facility at 116 Anacapa St. in the heart of the Funk Zone, just a couple of blocks away from East Beach, the meditations’ warm-weather locale. Each event features a new guided meditation from O’Brien, as well as continued focus on a variety of pranayama (breathing) exercises. What can we expect this time around at Yoga Soup?

I’ll sing some classic call and response kirtans, but we’ll also do songs. That was always the tradition (in India), a philosophy in poetry that would be sung intermixed with kirtans. So, we are using meditations to move people from mass ecstasy to mass stillness, and then offer songs that are both beautiful and philosophical. Sheila and Joss will do a few songs, too, and I might even do some new songs from a record that I’m working on in English right now.

Back in 1995, Jewel’s first pop album Pieces of You took nearly two years to click, and then, almost overnight, became one of the bestselling debut records of all time, eventually moving more than 12 million copies. The singer-songwriter was just 21 at the time, not far removed from being a homeless San Diego teenager, and the sudden success might have proved overwhelming if not for the mindfulness practices and coping mechanisms she’d already developed in her early days as an aspiring troubadour. (Not coincidentally, her first two smash hit singles were called “Who Will Save Your Soul” and “You Were Meant for Me”.)

Fast-forward 22 years, and Jewel – who brings her Handmade Holiday tour featuring her father and two brothers as guests to the Chumash Casino on Friday night (see the events calendar) – is turning that lifelong spiritual pursuit into a business. Jewel Inc., which launches just a year after the debut of her website www.JewelNeverBroken.com (named after her 2015 memoir), a joint project with mindfulness research expert Judson Brewer, expands upon the concept of encouraging “emotional fitness.” The company will offer a digital tool kit to improve mental health fitness, and she’s also creating curriculum for public schools to help youngsters “realize they are observers of their thoughts, not victims of them,” she told the San Diego Union-Tribune last week.

Bodhi Path Santa Barbara resident teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips is offering another one of his extended local retreats this week over at the La Casa de Maria Retreat Center. Let’s Have Color

Quite some years ago, when Coast Village Road was created, the right things were done, like the various medians, et cetera, and each has excellent beautiful trees and bushes.

Coast Village Road, in the old days, was a “fill-up” turn-off for gasoline/ oil. There were 13 to 14 stations along the one-mile stretch. Between San Francisco and Los Angeles, they were easy to reach.

Later, the designers and makers of the medians did create a water sprinkling system therein... underground.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to plant the drought-resistant, beautiful, bright high-color bougainvillea between the now mature trees?

(about decision making). He was also my next-door neighbor and head of the UCSB physics department, as well as a NASA consultant.

I thought you and Mr. Ray Winn might enjoy the following letter that the late Dr. Lewis sent to Curtis G. Gallan, Jr., Princeton University, president of the American Physical Society (APS), dated 6 October, 2010: “Dear Curt, “When I first joined the American Physical Society sixty-seven years ago, it was much smaller, much gentler, and as yet uncorrupted by the money flood (a threat against which Dwight Eisenhower warned a half-century ago). Indeed, the choice of physics as a profession was then a guarantor of a life of poverty and abstinence – it was World War II that changed all that. The prospect of worldly gain drove few physicists.

a contentious social-scientific issue, The Reactor Safety Study, though there were zealots aplenty on the outside, there was no hint of inordinate pressure on us as physicists.

We were therefore able to produce what I believe was and is an honest appraisal of the situation at that time. We were further enabled by the presence of an oversight committee consisting of Pief Panofsky, Vicki Weisskopf, and Hans Bethe, all towering physicists beyond reproach.

I was proud of what we did in a charged atmosphere. In the end the oversight committee, in its report to the APS President, noted the complete independence in which we did the job, and predicted that the report would be attacked from both sides.

“What greater tribute could there be?

“How different it is now. The giants no longer walk the earth, and the money flood has become the raison d’être of much physics research, the vital sustenance of much more, and it provides the support for untold numbers of professional jobs. For reasons that will soon become clear, my former pride at being an APS Fellow all these years has been turned into shame, and I am forced, with no pleasure at all, to offer you my resignation from the Society.

“It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it that has corrupted so many scientists and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. Anyone who has the faintest doubt that this is so should force himself to read the ClimateGate documents, which lay it bare. (Andrew Montford’s book, The Hockey Stick Illusion, organizes the facts very well.) I don’t believe that any real physicist, nay scientist, can read that stuff without revulsion. I would almost make that revulsion a definition of the word scientist.

“So what has the APS, as an organization, done in the face of this challenge? It has accepted the corruption as the norm, and gone along with it.

For example: 1) About a year ago, a few of us sent an e-mail on the subject to a fraction of the membership. APS ignored the issues, but the then president immediately launched a hostile investigation of where we got the e-mail addresses. In its better days, APS used to encourage discussion of important issues, and indeed the constitution cites that as its principal purpose. No more. Everything that has been done in the last year has been designed to silence debate.

“2) The appallingly tendentious APS statement on Climate Change was apparently written in a hurry

by a few people over lunch, and is certainly not representative of the talents of APS members as I have long known them. So, a few of us petitioned the Council to reconsider it. One of the outstanding marks of (in)distinction in the Statement was the poison word ‘incontrovertible,’ which describes few items in physics, certainly not this one. In response, APS appointed a secret committee that never met, never troubled to speak to any skeptics, yet endorsed the Statement in its entirety. (They did admit that the tone was a bit strong, but amazingly kept the poison word ‘incontrovertible’ to describe the evidence, a position supported by no one.)

“In the end, the Council kept the original statement, word for word, but approved a far longer ‘explanatory’ screed, admitting that there were uncertainties, but brushing them aside to give blanket approval to the original. The original Statement, which still stands as the APS position, also contains what I consider pompous and asinine advice to all world governments, as if the APS were master of the universe. It is not, and I am embarrassed that our leaders seem to think it is. This is not fun and games, these are serious matters involving vast fractions of our national substance, and the reputation of the Society as a scientific society is at stake.

“3) In the interim, the ClimateGate scandal broke into the news, and the machinations of the principal alarmists were revealed to the world. It was a fraud on a scale I have never seen, and I lack the words to describe its enormity. Effect on the APS position: none. None at all. This is not science; other forces are at work.

“4) So, a few of us tried to bring science into the act (that is, after all, the alleged and historic purpose of APS), and collected the necessary 200+ signatures to bring to the Council a proposal for a Topical Group on Climate Science, thinking that open discussion of the scientific issues, in the best tradition of physics, would be beneficial to all, and also a contribution to the nation. I might note that it was not easy to collect the signatures, since you denied us the use of the APS membership list. We conformed in every way with the requirements of the APS Constitution, and described in great detail what we had in mind – simply to bring the subject into the open.

“5) To our amazement, Constitution be damned, you declined to accept our petition, but instead used your own control of the mailing list to run a poll on the members’ interest in a TG on Climate and the Environment.

Augustinian Painting Unveiled for Beebes Gayle and Pam Beebe with a painting of Saint Augustine after chapel

estmont trustee Walter Hansen and Bruce Herman, Lothlorien distinguished professor in fine arts at Gordon College, presented president Gayle D. Beebe and his wife, Pam, with a commissioned portrait of Saint Augustine on October 27 in Westmont chapel.

The gift honors the couple’s 10 years of service at Westmont.

In Beebe’s book Longing for God, he describes Augustine as the most influential Christian figure in the history of the Church. Westmont named its honors program featuring 90 students who benefit from significant scholarships after Augustine.

“Gayle is the original Augustinian here at Westmont,” Hansen said. “So we’re honoring him today by giving him a portrait of his hero.”

Herman and his apprentice, Rachel Pacitti, a junior at Gordon, worked on the painting together. “All four of us collaborated on this project,” Herman said. “I was the master artist,

but Gayle is the brains behind it, and Walter is the heart behind it. His love for Gayle, his love for Jesus Christ, and his love for the wise words of Saint Augustine are what gave me the engine to move forward. The work of Augustine, whom we revere in the Christian tradition, was predicated in humility and losing his face, as it were, in order to gain a new name that Christ would give him rather than to make a name for himself.”

In the painting, the face of Augustine, who was North African, is taken from images of first-century sarcophagus portraits and photos of the late Abune Paulos, the former head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Gayle met Paulos at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1982 after Paulos had been imprisoned and tortured for speaking out against communism in 1974.

“He is an incredible, ordinary saint,” Gayle said. “His is the face I think of when I imagine Saint Augustine.

“Plato says beauty is the only spiritual essence we love instinctively by our nature. We should use it for access to the transcendent good. I often think of paintings as avenues God uses to awaken in us a deeper love and awareness. This painting is such a remarkable piece of work. We will treasure this the rest of our lives.”

Spencer Named Master Teacher Greg Spencer, Westmont professor of communication studies, is the Western States Communication Association (WSCA) Communication and Instruction Interest Group’s 2018 Master Teacher. Spencer will speak on the Master Teacher panel in Santa Clara on Saturday, February 16, from 1 to 2:30 pm.

Each year, the Communication and Instruction Interest Group recognizes master teachers from around the region and asks them to share their teaching style, strategies and philosophies at the WSCA convention and participate in an open forum to discuss their approaches to the profession. Spencer was nominated by members of the WSCA, which was founded in 1929.

I lived for seven years. One must always start with food, and there were tapas including my favorite, tortilla Espanola (egg and potato omelette).

years, the SBTHP has worked to preserve, restore, reconstruct, and interpret sites in Santa Barbara County.

Founded in 1963 by Dr. Pearl Chase and other concerned community leaders, SBTHP operates El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park – Santa Barbara’s 18th-century birthplace – under a unique agreement with California State Parks.

Within the Presidio neighborhood lived many generations of Santa Barbarans, a rich cultural mix of Chumash, Spanish, Mexican, EuroAmerican, Chinese, and Japanese settlers. SBTHP owns and operates Casa de la Guerra, the 1820s home of Presidio Commandante Jose de la Guerra and his family. The restored

home is now a museum featuring original furnishings and rotating exhibits.

“In 2009, SBTHP signed an agreement with State Parks to manage and develop the Santa Ines Mission Mills, rare relics of the industrial operations carried on at some of the California missions by Chumash neophytes and Spanish padres, as a future California State Park. UCSB Arts & Lectures is at it again!

They have brought the cutting-edge comedian Samantha Bee from New York to appear at the Arlington Theatre for a conversation with our own local bombshell writer Starshine Roshell, who is also wise and witty.

Samantha is known for her comedic voice on her late night show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. She was born in Canada and began performing as a member of the all female sketch comedy troupe The Atomic Fireballs. She claims to be shy except

when on stage.

In 2003, she was on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as the sole female correspondent for two years (2006 until 2008).

She set a record for show longevity, leaving in 2015. On Full Frontal, she explored important stories that mainstream media may have missed. It was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2016 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

And there’s more. Samantha and her husband, Jason Jones, have co-created the series The Detour about a couple’s experiences on family getaways. When Starshine asked her if it was autobiographical, she chimed in, “Not at all.” Regarding her use of foul language, Samantha admitted her three children were “puritans” who didn’t like her to swear (she doesn’t when they are around) and weren’t interested in her show. Samantha has been named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Wow! Starshine has always been a favorite writer of mine, so it’s not surprising she can interview as well. She has interviewed the likes of George Clooney, Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, and Gloria Steinem. Local readers have voted her Best Columnist for 11 years in the Santa Barbara Independent. She’s

By the spring of 1965, because of insurmountable help given by the people and churches who shared the same faith in Jesus and also taught the Holy Gospel, Chuck and Mary’s brand-new organization was now able to serve 225 meals at the daily dinner table. And by 1966, the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission purchased El Nido Hotel at 202 State Street, where they fed and housed 40 homeless guests a night and had a Chapel that seated more than a hundred guests at a time.

Overall, the Popes not only expanded their food and bed availability by nearly seven times the amount, but now had room for 12 men who suffered from the disease of alcoholism and/or drug addiction. Men who shared the same disease as today’s clients. But according to the history on the Mission’s webpage, those who joined the evolving organization, one based on love and faith in the Gospel when healing one’s pain and misery, “responded to Chuck’s invitation to ‘start a brand-new life in Christ.’”

Twenty years later, in 1986, the oneacre lot on East Yanonali Street was purchased in what the Rescue Mission called the “Miracle on Yanonali Street.” Now, for the past 30 years, the shelter has held 80 homeless men and 20 women. Plus, the treatment program holds 45 men at a time, (but due to the remodel is currently down to 35), and altogether, 53% of the graduates today achieve five years of sobriety and beyond.

Despite the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission’s well-above average success rate, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, says Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a “chronic relapsing brain disease characterized by compulsive alcohol use, loss of

control over alcohol intake, and a negative emotional state when not using” (NIAAA). The institute also claims that more than 16 million Americans suffer from Alcohol Use Disorder. In addition, the National Institute on Drug Abuse says, “Illicit drug use in the United States has been increasing.

In 2013, an estimated 24.6 million Americans aged 12 or older – 9.4 percent of the population – had used an illicit drug in the past month. This number is up from 8.3 percent in 2002” (NIDA).

But because of private donors who make it financially possible for shelter and program to exist, the men and women who are admitted into today’s drug and alcohol treatment program at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission, the one and only emergency shelter

and inpatient drug treatment program in California’s second-wealthiest county, are able to treat this spreading disease with the help of 75-plus process groups weekly that address everything from PTSD to anger management, to addiction and all types of abuse.

Some clients are court-ordered. The term used for those clients is “a nudge from the judge.” Some are family-ordered or self-ordered. Others are alcoholics or drug addicts, but most are both. The younger clients, some who are not yet old enough to drink in a bar, claim heroin is their number-one drug of choice.

“Deaths from overdoses of prescription drugs and heroin continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death for Americans,” the network claims; also, in 2014, “47,055 people died from drug overdoses – 1.5 times greater than the number killed in car crashes” (CNN).

This program was designed in the 1960s, when the country was at war with Vietnam, so these clients could learn new tools to fight this malignant disease, one that is known to lead to homelessness, jail, even death. The Santa Barbara Rescue Mission teaches or re-teaches those who have abused alcohol and drugs, discipline, and work ethics, to connect or reconnect with God while they prepare to venture back into the world of rules and responsibility.

But what the Rescue Mission also conveys is the ability to have faith in oneself; faith that they too can achieve a life of family and employment. So, the clients partake in groups such as “family therapy,” and serve the homeless guests their meals at mealtime; even those who cannot stay after dinner, those with no intention of change, and are okay living in the dark corners of these cold autumn nights, are loved and fed by the Santa Barbara non-profit organization.

Most of the clients in treatment have been homeless before. But some have decided they no longer see themselves outdoors, with a needle in their last remaining vein, or drinking a warm beer on the cold streets at dawn. So,

(If you had asked about sex, you would have gotten more expressions of interest.) There was, of course, no such petition or proposal, and you have now dropped the Environment part, so the whole matter is moot.

(Any lawyer will tell you that you cannot collect signatures on a vague petition, and then fill in whatever you like.) The entire purpose of this exercise was to avoid your constitutional responsibility to take our petition to the Council.

There are indeed trillions of dollars involved, to say nothing of the fame and glory (and frequent trips to exotic islands) that go with being a member of the club.

When Penn State absolved Mike Mann of wrongdoing, and the University of East Anglia did the same for Phil Jones, they cannot have been unaware of the financial penalty for doing otherwise. Since I am no philosopher, I’m not going to explore at just which point enlightened self-interest crosses the line into corruption, but a careful reading of the ClimateGate releases makes it clear that this is not an academic question.

JFK’s 1961 Texas Visit

Most Americans are not aware that JFK had visited Dallas before the 30 November – 7 December 2017

tragic event of 1963. I am a witness of his first visit there, and I will explain. I was in my second year of residency in internal medicine at Baylor University Hospital, and my attending physician was Dr. H. Kimmerling. One of my duties was to participate in the care of his private patients who were assigned to the teaching program.

One such patient was the Honorable Sam Rayburn, who had returned to his native Texas for cancer treatment. A portion of the hospital top floor became a special suite, as vice president LBJ was a frequent visitor also.

In the afternoon of October 1961, I was in the hospital elevator when three men with raincoats pushed me toward the back, while a smiling sun-tanned gentleman advanced toward me. “Jack Kennedy,” he said, shaking my hand and reading my name tag; he asked, “Pierre?

French?” “No, Belgian,” I replied simply.

By then, the elevator had reached the seventh floor and the presidential party exited. Thirty minutes later, JFK had left the hospital for the airport.

Later that evening on my routine rounds, I reviewed Mr. Rayburn’s hospital chart. In the section reserved for the nurses’ notes, I read three entries on separate lines: Pt had a BM; President Kennedy in; Pt had a BM. The local press was silent about this short presidential visit and the only written memento was on a hospital chart, sandwiched between two bodily function notes. Later that month, the patient lapsed into a coma and was transferred to a private clinic in his hometown of Bonham, where he expired a month later.

We’re only a few days away from 2018, and the State of California has shown no evidence that it has a special relationship with the federal government where it can launder cannabis tax monies into the nation’s banking grid. California treasurer John Chiang has said something about armored trucks to transport all the cash from pot outlet to “special banks,” but no DEA letter saying it’s all legal. Just based on that account should be enough for in-state pot distributors to tell Chiang to take a hike and not collect the weed tax.

Under federal law, you cannot monitor an illegal substance. Why enable John Chiang to do so?

Armie Hammer, the dashing actor son of Montecito car and art collector Michael Hammer, just lost to fellow thespian Blake Shelton, 41, as People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Sweeping Dividends It was a bittersweet moment when Montecito Bank & Trust celebrated the 15th anniversary of its Community Dividends Awards, with 184 nonprofits sharing $1 million, at the Coral Casino.

But Hollister stepped in and attempted to purchase the property from two nuns who had lived there as Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A judge voided that sale, saying the archdiocese had the right to sell the property, not the nuns.

Hollister believed she owned the house after paying the nuns just $44,000 for the 20,000 sq. ft. and moving in – while Katy was willing to pay $10 million in cash, plus an additional $4.5 million for House of Prayers.

Ocean photographer Bob Evans was definitely making a splash when his debut exhibition Marine Megatropolis featuring 26 colorful images opened at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.

Bob, who was a deep-sea diver off our city’s offshore oil platforms, logging 850 dives between 1974 and 1981 taking thousands of slides and 7,000 feet of film footage, describes the show as “a celebration of marine life.”

“The oceans are in peril everywhere,” says Bob. “It is incumbent upon us to act as stewards.”

Among the 250 guests turning out for the opening of the show, which runs through April, were Jean-Michel Cousteau, Hiroko Benko, Sean O’Brien, Frank Skipper, Greg Gorga, Nancy and Peggy Callahan, and Susanne Chess.

Nun-sense Santa Barbara warbler Katy Perry has been triumphant in the legal battle to buy a Los Angeles convent.

A city jury has found businesswoman, Dana Hollister, must pay $5 million to the former Dos Pueblos High student and the archdiocese of the Big Orange, deciding she intentionally interfered with the sale of the hilltop property in Los Feliz.

The archdiocese was awarded $3.47 million and Katy $1.57 million for interference with contractual relations and other misdeeds.

The 33-year-old singer has sought to buy the 8-acre estate and its Romanstyle property for $14.5 million and relocate an adjoining house of prayer used by priests.

Goodbye, David On a personal note, I remember Partridge Family singer David Cassidy, who went to more heavenly pastures at his home in Florida, aged 67.

In February, Cassidy, who was a top-selling artist in the 1970s, revealed he was suffering of dementia, which was abundantly apparent when I saw him perform at the Granada when he forgot lyrics, stumbled around the stage, and rambled away nonsensically.

His career had been in severe decline of late, with him filing for bankruptcy, a divorce from his third wife, Sue Shifrin. arrests, and a stint in rehab.

It is to be hoped he is now in a better place.

Hulda, Sophia, and Grace were ages 7, 10, and 12 in 1998 when they attended their first local fiddle competition near their Texas home, and within a year won both state and national championships in their respective age groups for four years running. Nearly two decades later, the trio’s evolution from “whiz-kid Western swing fiddlers” into an adult Americana band with heavenly harmonies is nearly complete, as the Quebe Sisters are finally fixing to record their fourth album, their first featuring original songs.

Hulda clued us in on the latest developments in advance of the sisters return to the Lobero stage this Friday as part of the Sings Like Hell series.

Q. Being in a band with your sisters: sibling rivalry or sibling revelry?

A. (Laughs) That’s a good question.

We have a lot of fun together. It’s good because we can be really honest with each other, ‘cuz we’re family.

While we do have disagreements, we appreciate both our differences and our similarities. And usually, we can come to some sort of consensus when there are issues.

How do you create the close harmonies, and for that matter divvy up the fiddle parts?

When a song is brought to the table, it’s usually pretty clear who should do what, which one of us will have the best interpretation, which is usually the one that found the song.

The current setup is mostly Sophia singing lead, with Grace doing lower harmonies, and me the higher ones.

But we switch around a lot more now

Transitioning from a kid trio to a mature band has meant a bit of a change in style. How has that happened?

It was our mentor who introduced us to western swing, which we love.

But as you mature, your musical taste deepens and you learn to love music on your own. It’s like weening yourself from your parents. You don’t really know what you want when you’re still in your teens. I think all three of us are in our journeys, figuring out our own tastes and our sound. We’re in the process of diving into what inspires us as individuals and as a band. We want to take it further, still do dance-based music that makes you want to move, but also lyrically says something about the culture we live in and make a difference. So, we’re excited about finally writing our own songs that are good enough to record.

You’ve played Asleep at the Wheel’s Dance Hall tour, on cruise ships with Delbert McClinton, and with a zillion stars at the Grand Ole Opry. What’s the biggest thrill of your career so far?

Oh, man, that’s a tough one.

Now it’s getting to work with the booking agency we have. We’d been pushing ourselves, and when someone in industry you respect wants to work with you, it means a lot. It’s a moment to step back and go wow, this is really my life.

Speaking of which, this life is all you’ve ever known. Ever envy the “regular” kids?

Hmmm. What’s “regular” in this world? I think it’s a matter of anything you don’t get to experience, you wish you could have that lifestyle. So sure, I wanted to do those normal teen things, like go to school and hang out with kids, which would be cool. But I also appreciated how unique our experience has been. CITY OF SANTA BARBARA NOTICE INVITING BIDS BID NO. 3880 1.

Bid Acceptance. The City of Santa Barbara (“City”) will accept sealed bids for its 6100 Hollister Avenue Project, by or before December 19, 2017, at 3:00 p .m., at its Purchasing Office, located at 310 E. Ortega Street, Santa Barbara, California 93101, at which time and place the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud. Each bidder is responsible for making certain that its Bid Proposal is actually delivered to the Purchasing Office. The receiving time at the Purchasing Office will be the governing time for acceptability of bids. Telegraphic, telephonic, electronic, and facsimile bids will not be accepted.

Project Information.

2.1 Location and Description. The Project is located at 6100 Hollister Avenue, Santa Barbara, California, and is described as follows: This project consists of the construction of new commercial industrial and retail space buildings and associated improvements along Hollister Avenue within the City of Santa Barbara.

2.2 Time for Completion. The contract period from commencement and completion of construction of the Project for the base bid is 180 working days. If bid Alternate 1 is awarded, add 20 working days, if bid Alternate 2 is awarded, add 20 working days, if bid Alternate 3 is awarded add 25 working days.

2.3 Engineer’s Estimate. The Engineer’s estimate for construction of the Base Bid for this project is $3,297,290 The Engineer’s Estimate for Additive Alternate 1 is $809,000. The Engineers Estimate for Additive Alternate 2 is $1,087,000. The Engineers Estimate for Additive Alternate 3 is $2,104,000 3.

License and Registration Requirements.

3.1 License. This Project requires a valid California contractor’s license for the following classification(s): A – General Engineering.

3.2 DIR Registration. City will not accept a Bid Proposal from or enter into the Contract with a bidder, without proof that the bidder and its Subcontractors are registered with the California Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) to perform public work under Labor Code section 1725.5, subject to limited legal exceptions.

The plans, specifications, bid forms and contract documents for the Project, and any addenda thereto (“Contract Documents”) may be downloaded from City’s website at: SantaBarbaraCA.gov/ebidboard. Bid Security. The Bid Proposal must be accompanied by bid security of ten percent of the maximum bid amount, in the form of a cashier’s or certified check made payable to City, or a bid bond executed by a surety licensed to do business in the State of California on the Bid Bond form included with the Contract Documents. The bid security must guarantee that, within ten days after City’s issuance of the notice of award of the Contract, the bidder will execute the Contract and submit the payment and performance bonds, insurance certificates and endorsements, and all other documentation required by the Contract Documents.

6.

Prevailing Wage Requirements.

6.1 General. This Project is subject to the prevailing wage requirements applicable to the locality in which the Work is to be performed for each craft, classification or type of worker needed to perform the Work, including employer payments for health and welfare, pension, vacation, apprenticeship and similar purposes.

6.2 Rates. The prevailing rates are on file with City and available online at http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR. Each Contractor and Subcontractor must pay no less than the specified rates to all workers employed to work on the Project. The schedule of per diem wages is based upon a working day of eight hours. The rate for holiday and overtime work must be at least time and one-half.

6.3 Compliance. The Contract will be subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR, under Labor Code section 1771.4.

Performance and Payment Bonds. The successful bidder will be required to provide performance and payment bond for 100% of the Contract Price regardless of contract dollar amount.

8.

Substitution of Securities. Substitution of appropriate securities in lieu of retention amounts from progress payments is permitted under Public Contract Code section 22300.

9.

Subcontractor List. Each bidder must submit, with its Bid Proposal, the name, location of the place of business, California contractor license number, DIR registration number, and percentage of the Work to be performed (based on the Base Bid) for each Subcontractor that will perform work or service or fabricate or install work for the prime contractor in excess of one-half of 1% of the bid price, using the Subcontractor List form included with the Contract Documents.

just days after the walls and ceilings literally came crashing down, eliminating more than half of the overnight beds for the time being, the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission held a commencement for 14 graduates who had pulled themselves from the dark hole of addiction, and completed the year-long, Christian-based program.

The graduation was held on November 11 of this year, at the Living Faith Church off Hollister Avenue.

Some graduates were in their earliest 20s. Others middle-aged, some from the streets or in lieu of jail or prison.

Some there because of a “nudge from the judge.” All had faced numerous accounts of living horror. Not only with drugs and alcoholism, but prior events as well: molestation and abuse, long stints of homelessness as children and adults; deaths, abandonment, events that are known to trigger the deadly disease of alcoholism and addiction, and bring unwanted pain to the chronic user.

“Every story of homelessness has a tragedy in it, some traumatic event that has happened,” says Geyling.

“And most of the time it’s just, unimaginable.”

One graduate was barely 20 years old and stood on stage behind the podium, and for 10 minutes she shared her story. How her first sibling was murdered. How she lived in multiple foster homes and survived multiple molestations, unexplained abandonments and abuse. The audience gasped three different times when she shared the incidents of her life through rolling tears and a voice that trembled. Still, she finished her speech with, “I love you all and thank you to all the donors.”

After she exited the stage, the next man spoke of his survival of not only heroin addiction and homelessness, but also jail and prison – the aftermath of his mother’s untimely death, when he was a 3-year-old boy, and living on the crests of Montecito.

Before the graduates had admitted themselves into the drug and alcohol treatment program, all claimed to be caught in the sickness of addiction, and the desolation of being homeless, broken, without God. One claimed that, at first, he was “there to dry off,” but eventually “surrendered to God.” He thanked the Rescue Mission, AA, and his peers before another graduate called his “amazing journey” at the Rescue Mission an “honor and a privilege.”

The next man had been homeless the past eight years of his middle-aged life and said, “I’ve learned how to face fears and negative thinking and trust in God.” But before he gave the mic to the next graduate, he told the crowd that from now on he was, “Not going to live outside.”

According to the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission’s website, more than 700 graduates have completed the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission in the last 20 years, a decade after Chuck Pope trained and supervised the – then, in the ‘80s – $2-million project during what the Rescue Mission calls, “the era of severe no-growth politics”; back when Ronald Reagan was president of the United States, before vice president, George H. W. Bush, took over in 1988.

As for today’s project, a project that, so far, has raised almost $8 million, director of Communications and Constituent Relations, Rebecca Weber, who volunteered at the Rescue Mission for 10 years before hired a decade ago claims the renovation has not at all affected the number of daily meals served. But the number of overnight guests, homeless and treatment program combined – as the Rescue Mission had forewarned – has dropped dramatically. Between the people without homes, men and women, and the men’s rehabilitation program – since the women are offsite at the Bethel House near downtown – each night, the total number of overnight guests caps at 75.

In addition, those who are affected by the year-long remodel include employees, such as Weber, who has moved her office into Geyling’s office, and Geyling now walks to his new and temporary office at the linen and uniform service Mission Linen, who established itself in Santa Barbara in 1930. Weber says that Mission Linen has agreed to let Geyling use one of their spaces as his own, until the Rescue Mission’s first renovation since opening in 1987 is further along or complete.

Furthermore, the conference room is temporarily being used as the women’s homeless shelter; instead of long tables and a sea of chairs and meetings with staff members and volunteers, there are 11 bunk beds with clean bedding to house the 22 women each day.

At the November 11 graduation, President Geyling – who was named the new president in 2007 – compared the graduate’s growth to “The Kingdom of God.” He said it’s like a farmer who plants a seed with the faith that something powerful will happen under that dirt. After a few months, the seed will have grown under the supervision of God, and the change and journey that started exactly one year prior – when the client’s metamorphosis had also begun – will have made the planted seed “unrecognizable.”

ward to handing over the reins,” Jim said. Unfortunately, lengthy negotiations were stalled when the owner of the Summerland building could not come to a lease agreement with the new potential owners of the business.

The Santa Barbara location (in which the Gallys owned the building and business) was sold in 2016. That was where the original grocery was founded by Tom Cantwell in 1981.

Now, with the Gallys’ 10-year lease up Thursday, November 30, they are having to liquidate the inventory and vacate, instead of selling the business or relocating. “I’ll never be a tenant again,” said Jim, when asked if he’d think about opening another location elsewhere in Summerland or Montecito. “But if we found the right property, we’d potentially reopen.”

The Gallys opened the market on Lillie Avenue in 2008, then added the picnic area, improved the parking lot, and made interior tenant improvements. The couple employed 20 people to help run the grocery, which was known for its extensive deli and sandwich selection, as well as a variety of grocery items, including locally produced products and foodstuff, with an emphasis on natural and organic items. Their lease also included two residential spaces upstairs, which housed Westmont students and the head chef of the deli.

“We see the same people, day in and day out; from the professionals stopping for coffee on the way to work, to the blue-collar employees grabbing breakfast or lunch, to the tourists from L.A. renting a home on Padaro Lane during the summer,” Jim said. “We will miss our loyal customers and especially our great employees, who have made it such a special place.”

Good news for nearly 7,000 Sansum Clinic patients from Santa Barbara and Montecito; this week, Sansum and Blue Shield of California announced a contract has been secured for individual health insurance plans offered through Covered California. As of January 1, 2018, Anthem Blue Cross will no longer offer individual health plans in Santa Barbara County through Covered California and many other counties;

the new contract means that Sansum Clinic should be an in-Network provider for plans sold by Blue Shield for individuals through Covered California. “Anthem Blue Cross was previously the only plan we contracted with for individual plans obtained through Covered California,” said Jill Fonte, Public Information officer for Sansum Clinic.

Last summer, Anthem Blue Cross decided to pull out of the individual plan market in most of California.

“Therefore, people who had Anthem plans need to buy Blue Shield if they want to be covered with an individual plan; the only problem was, we didn’t have a contract with Blue Shield, which means they wouldn’t have been able to continue with us as an in-network provider,” Fonte explained. “It is always a good idea to confirm with your insurance broker or with Blue Shield that the plan you choose will include Sansum Clinic, as those plans will be available.” Fonte said the contract affects those in our area with individual health plans, small-business owners, and others who are not eligible for group health insurance. “It’s really good news for those people,” she said.

Blue Shield of California is the only insurance company offering individual plans to people who live and work in Santa Barbara County. Sansum Clinic is encouraging everyone who is able to obtain individual insurance to sign up with Blue Shield during open enrollment, between November 1 and January 31.

Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors

Julia Rodgers has been appointed to the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara’s Board of Directors

graduated from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and worked as a litigator. Ms. Rodgers also served as director of communications at the University of Chicago Law School and Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. She has been a resident of Santa Barbara since 2002.

A former board member for Storyteller Children’s Center, Ms Rodgers has contributed to fundraising and public relations efforts on behalf of Crane Country Day School, Laguna Blanca School, the local youth development organization AHA!, and the Santa Barbara School of Squash, among other nonprofits. She wrote and edited a publication commemorating the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara’s 50th anniversary and has served as a student interviewer for the foundation. She has also written many freelance articles for Montecito Journal.

“Julia has been a foundation advocate and partner for several years now, and we expect her to bring the same enthusiasm and passion for our mission to her board work,” said Scholarship Foundation president and CEO Candace Winkler.

The Unity Shoppe’s “Central Distribution Facility” serves the low-income clients of 300 non-profit organizations, social service agencies, churches, schools, and hospitals. More than 22,000 people are referred for furniture, food, clothing, school supplies, and basic necessities. Items needed include canned fruit and vegetables, canned tuna, pasta, dried rice, dried beans, and peanut butter.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2 Carousel Closing – The clichéd ending for Western movies has the hero on horseback riding off into the sunset, but the closing of the historic Chase Palm Park carousel isn’t enjoying quite the same sort of happy ending.

After nearly 20 years of going round and round and up and down in the picturesque park on the Santa Barbara waterfront, the carousel is leaving town because operating costs are exceeding the attraction’s revenue. The owners, Historic Carousels Inc., will be removing the Allan Herschell ThreeAbreast Carousel merry-go-round that made its debut in San Diego back in 1916 and came to Santa Barbara in 83 years later, and the hand-carved mini-horses and carriages will head to the company’s Hood River, Oregon, headquarters, where it will become the first installation of a planned Carousel Museum on the Columbia River. But first, there’s today’s Carousel Carnival, part of a final weekend of rides and remembering. The festival features free carousel rides (also all day Sunday) plus music, giveaways, a photo booth, carnival games, a bouncy castle, balloons, face painting, and more. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5 Station’ed in Santa Barbara – As this year’s selection for Santa Barbara Reads, Emily St. John Mandel’s novel Station Eleven has been the talk of the town ever since late in the summer. Drawing on themes from the futuristic novel – about a traveling Shakespearean theatre company in a post-apocalyptic North America – readers in the coordinated program from the library have been reflecting on what they find most important, what they would miss if the material things were no longer available, and what elements of culture they would strive to preserve in the wake of cataclysmic events.

Tonight, the program comes to a close with a visit from Mandel herself, as the author of the book that won the Arthur C. Clarke Award and was a finalist for a National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award will participate in a short, moderated conversation followed by a Q&A session with the audience. venture from Santa Barbara Acoustic Music Association, which produced its second annual Acoustic Instrument Celebration this past summer. Named for its only earlier show held at the all-redwood 125-year-old hall at 2020 Chapala St., the series aims to bring acoustic musicians from near and far to town for intimate and truly independent concerts where the performer is encouraged to stray outside his standard playlist. First up at the new 100-seat venue is Laurence Juber, the guitarist, composer, and arranger who first came to attention as lead guitarist in former Beatle Paul McCartney’s Wings, with whom he won a Grammy. Juber has since established himself as a finger-style guitar virtuoso and entertainer who fuses folk, jazz, blues, pop, and classical styles, creating a multi-faceted performance that belies the use of only one instrument. In addition to his 25 solo albums, Juber has also recorded with Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, Seal, and the French chanteuse Sylvie Vartan, plus played on the soundtracks to hundreds of TV shows, video games, documentaries, and movies.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6 Oh, Dizzy, He’s Busy – Cuba native Arturo Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of jazz just a little more than a decade after Dizzy Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American jazz.

Later a protégé of Dizzy, Sandoval has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist, and composer. Highly decorated for his wide-ranging accomplishments, the trumpeter’s hardware includes 10 Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards, and an Emmy, the latter for composing the entire underscore of For Love or Country, the HBO feature film based on his life. Still staying true to his Latin roots, Sandoval’s newest CD, Eternamente Manzanero, is a tribute to the revered Mexican romantic pianist and singer-songwriter Armando Manzanero. for closure are up 18%, and our median sales price is up a respectable 9% to an even $3M. This is what a hot market looks like. And if you are in the $4-5M market, you better have a place to move to when you list your home. You will find little competition, and there seems to be buyers aplenty eager to move in. Not much different in the other sectors except, of course, the high-end – which continues to be unable to sufficiently impress their buyers.

And as most sellers enjoy this “hot” market, we should remember it is not necessarily good news for all. In fact, there are few delighted buyers out there; far too few properties, and prices have continued to inch up all year. And to make things even more challenging, the folks in Washington, that is the elected folks, are proposing

T

he Montecito Heat Index is a snapshot of demand for single-family homes in five price sectors. Rather than a measurement of completed sales, typically referred to as lagging data, the Heat Index looks at homes currently under contract resulting in a more accurate picture of market demand. And as real estate activity is seasonal, today’s demand is compared to this date last year. All data are from the Santa Barbara MLS and uniformly deemed reliable.

Today’s Heat Index registers a staggering 147 – nearly three times the demand gauged a year ago today.

The $1-2 million group reflects a strong showing of 47 besting last year’s score by 213%, yet for the first time in memory, is not our demand leader. Now, the honor goes to the too-often neglected $4-5M group with a big score of 55, outperforming last year by a remarkable 816%. And the typically robust $2-3M market continues showing strength bettering last year by 100%.

Overall, as the adjacent chart demonstrates, all sectors but one, the $5M-and-up group met or outperformed last year’s demand. Sales are up 7%, homes under contract heading

to make the homebuying experience more difficult.

The elimination of incentives to homebuying was once considered a fast way not to get re-elected.

Apparently, that has changed both in the present House and Senate. Should these incentives be reduced, the way we view homeownership, both primary and secondary, will be altered.

We Californians will be particularly impacted. Millennials, now the largest segment of our society, already questioning whether homeownership is affordable for them, will be looking harder at that new condo rental with

the swimming pool, community rec room, and one-year lease.

For Montecito in particular, where many purchases are second homes, little or no associated deductions won’t help the buying decision.

But that will be next year, so perhaps the final result will be less draconian than it appears now. And I’m not sure we have any Republican officials in California to complain to anyway. So, for now, it looks like we will end the year with a median sales price incre.ase in the double digits and more water for the lawn. All things considered, not too bad.
