A Bias For Bias

A

story you may have missed while you were busy celebrating the holidays was the December 31 closing of the gargantuan (half million square foot) “Newseum” – just steps from the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue – after 11 years and ten million visitors. Various news outlets decried the poignancy and irony of the 450 million-dollar Newseum closing its doors forever. The implication being that unbiased news is dead, and that even the building where “real” reporting was enshrined if not mummified – journalism’s Cooperstown – could not sustain itself in this era of fake news and alternative facts.

But I submit that journalism is not dead and will continue to provide an invaluable service and will continue to morph and endure. Moreover, journalists and journalism have always been biased – and likely always will be. It’s just the form and obviousness of journalism’s bias that has changed.

Successful biased reporting in this nation is older than the nation itself. In fact, some of our most beloved Founding Fathers were actually highly partisan newspaper men: Ben Franklin wrote biased news under multiple pseudonyms and was one of the first publishers to mingle advertising with content (I guess it was always about the Benjamins). For creating this inherent conflict between reportage and remuneration we, perhaps appropriately, rewarded Franklin with his face on the hundred-dollar bill as well as the half dollar.

or the last five years, deep sea diver and marine photographer Bob Evans and his wife, Susanne Chess, have been working on a paradigm busting project – a more sustainable means of converting saltwater into fresh water.

The project, C+E=DOW desalination, is a new way of looking at the process and is predicted to have 90 per cent less environmental impact than current state of the art programs.

“It offers a solution to a number of complex problems facing us today and threatening our future,” says Bob. “The new system will not entrap marine life, will not discharge high volumes of highly concentrated brine, and will require as much as forty per cent less energy to produce fresh water from salt than current state of the art desalination.”

The creative Santa Barbara couple have filed for patent protection for their module and method of desalination, and now they are turning to the community of our Eden by the Beach, as well as raising funds for a pilot plant.

A February 11 deadline for filing national stage applications to protect the important new technology internationally rapidly approaches, but will cost $50,000.

“That is a big nut for us to crack,” says Bob. “To date, we have provided 100 per cent of the funding for this world-changing endeavor.

“The public’s contribution tells us and the world people support the development of technology that offers solutions to the most pressing issues we face today. That every one of us can take action.”

“It’s a validation of our unique approach to deep ocean water desalination based on existing reverse osmosis technology, which uses ocean pressure to offset energy requirements,” adds Susan.

The two entrepreneurs have a longtime involvement in ocean-based projects including Evans’ spearheading establishment of the California mussel harvesting industry and participating in a natural bio-fouling removal program for gas giant Chevron’s Platform Hilda.

and sport scuba divers, swimmers, and fly fishermen. The Ops Force Fin made for oceanographer JeanMichel Cousteau earned them the Time Magazine Innovation of the Year award in 2002.

The couple’s GoFundMe campaign will help extend patent protection to other countries and continents, including Europe, Israel, the Gulf States, China, Australia, and Japan through the International Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

They are also looking for potential investors and partners, including Outer Continental Shelf Operators (OCS) and governments to work with them in developing and managing desalination projects.

The next phase of the project, expected to take 18 months, will be to build a pilot plant module with the help of Innovative Design Inc. based in Knoxville, Tennessee, a firm that specializes in reverse osmosis technology and has worked on multimillion dollar projects with Aqua-Chem Inc., one of the largest desalination companies in the world.

It is true that I have been denied all access to the babies that I raised for many years. We were a true “pack” and it was a great joy spending our days on Butterfly Beach, Elings Park and Douglas Preserve. But those days are gone and it is a heartbreak.

I urge anyone with a pet you love and cherish, to support Social Compassion in Legislation, in order to help prevent this devastating loss from happening to you.

Our pets are voiceless and don’t understand why the people they love go away. I fear when this happens their pain and sense of loss may be worse than ours.

SBIFF Explores the Promise of the Poet

A

lthough the project was 10 years in the making, director Paul Lamont remembers exactly why he wanted to make The Songpoet, his nearly two-hour exploration of the conflicts of career, family, ego, relationships, and sheer talent vs. achievement that have propelled the great American singer-songwriter Eric Andersen through his half-century-plus career. It was a moment he remembers from several decades earlier, in fact.

“I was in high school, and I found a copy of The Best of Eric Andersen in the 39-cent bin at a record store and I thought the cover was great. I put the needle down on the LP, and I was hooked immediately. Then he disappeared.”

That, in a microcosm, captures the appeal and intrigue of Andersen, who plied the coffeehouse circuit in Greenwich Village not long after Bob Dylan, and, armed with a disarming voice and lyrically poetic songs – three of the most famous of which, “Thirsty Boots,” “Violets of Dawn,” and “Close the Door Lightly When You Go,” showed up on his 1966 album – was set to soar into stardom when his newly acquired manager, famed Beatles impresario Brian Epstein, suddenly died. Five years later, his 1972 album Blue River, which opened with one of his most evocative songs, “Is It Really Love at All,” found him again on the precipice of commercial success only to have the label lose the master of his follow-up LP. But Andersen, whose career surely wasn’t helped by his move to the Netherlands, has continued to explore and grow, as indicated by his 2017 album Mingle With the Universe: The Worlds of Lord Byron, an opus employing the poet’s words with his music, which he previewed in a Sings Like Hell concert at the Lobero that April.

“He’s been flying under the radar for so many years when he should be on everybody’s playlist,” explained Lamont. “But when I ran it by my producer, he said ‘Who?’ That’s a story that needed to be told, for people who love him as much as I do as well as those who don’t know who he is.”

After gaining the songwriter’s confidence, Lamont combed through decades worth of Andersen’s diaries, even though Andersen could have told the story himself. “But I thought the best approach to understand the person, the man and the artist was through what he wrote, what he was feeling at any given time,” he said.

real truth lies in the journals. Eric allowed the private image to come to the foreground for the movie, and he said we got to the core of who he is.”

The Songpoet unspools at a very deliberate almost painstaking pace, slow and contemplative, like both Andersen and his music.

“Exactly,” Lamont said. “We wanted it to be symbolic of who he is and the arc of his music, which isn’t in your face. The music is part of the narrative, the lyrics help to tell the story.

You have to listen to it and absorb it.”

Audiences will have a chance to take in both the U.S. premiere of the movie, the filmmakers and the artist, when Andersen joins in the post-screening Q&A on Thursday evening, January 23, and Friday morning, January 24, before heading down to Santa Monica for a performance at McCabe’s that night.

his November, Cold Spring School District residents may see a bond measure on the ballot, the first of its kind in 12 years. The measure, which is expected to be close to $9.8 million, will be used to fund a new classroom building as well as pay for much needed infrastructure improvements to the existing buildings on campus.

We sat down with CSS Superintendent Amy Alzina and Chief Business Officer Yuri Calderon last week, who explained that a major focus of the school board over the last several years has been to replace the two remaining portable buildings, which are over 25 years old and well past their useful life. A third portable building, which housed art classes, was removed last year after it was in disrepair. Recent growth in the enrollment on campus has highlighted the issue of the dilapidated portables even more, as the two remaining

Dueling Dems

O

nly in California is it possible for two accomplished Democrats, with near perfect party pedigrees, to run for one job to represent the voters of District 1 as a Supervisor for Santa Barbara County. Political pundits promise that this year’s race for the District 1 seat between the incumbent Das Williams and the challenger Laura Capps, will be closer than the normal non-contested shoo-in for the Democratic candidate.

The case for Das Williams for County Supervisor hinges on his leadership persona and his 17-year record of public service as a Santa Barbara City Councilman, State Assembly Member, and most importantly, his last four years as the 1st District Supervisor.

How Did We Get Here?

When Das Williams first won the right to represent District 1 back in June 2016, he recorded a solid win over his opponent, county investment officer Jennifer Christensen, with 59% of the voters supporting him vs. 40% for Jennifer.

Back then, some viewed Das Williams as a rising star in Democratic politics who was content to temporarily trade a loftier position with running for the Santa Barbara County’s First District Supervisor seat. It was thought that he might use the Supervisor position as a steppingstone to await the retirement of the ever-popular Hannah-Beth Jackson in the California Senate, or perhaps that

Dr. Alzina said.

In 2016 the board voted to move forward with a new building to house classrooms and administrative offices; this new plan builds on those ideas, with plans for a 6,000 sq. ft. building to house three classrooms as well as the front office staff, and offices for school specialists. The classrooms, which will be outfitted with the newest technology including collapsible walls and integrated outdoor learning space, will be used for STEAM and art classes, allowing for continued collaboration between classes and teachers.

The school was recently awarded a prestigious honor by the California Department of Education, marking it as one of 13 schools in the state to be awarded the Exemplary Arts in Education Award. “We’re most proud about how art, music, and STEAM come together to create project-based learning experiences that are connected to what students are learning in the classroom. But right now, our programming and facilities are mismatched,” said Dr. Alzina. The school is also considered the highest performing district in the State in English Language Arts and Math. The current enrollment is 169 students, which is higher than the last several years.

When the school was first built in 1889, the entrance to campus was along Sycamore Canyon Road, before it became a busy state highway. For safety purposes, a wall was erected at some point in the ‘70s or ‘80s, to protect the campus from the traffic; the entrance to the school was moved east to the parking lot on Cold Spring Road. However, the office and administration building remained in the center of campus, causing visitors to have to traverse the campus before checking in with campus officials. The new building will create a space for visitors to check in, which will improve campus security, and the parking lot will also be reconfigured as part of the

project, allowing for better traffic circulation. The current office space will be used to expand the library, converting the library from a traditional book library to a media center.

The measure will be on the ballot in November, if the school board continues to move the project forward. The last measure to pass was Measure C ($2.4M) in 2008, which was approved after the failure of two previous ballot measures in November 2006 (Measure K for $14M) and February 2008 (Measure R for $8.75M). Measure C funds went to renovate the seven older classrooms and two student restrooms in the main school building, as well as improvements to the play areas with a new play structure, blacktop, and new landscaping on the corner of Cold Spring Road and Sycamore Canyon.

About half of the current proposed funding will go towards updating the utility infrastructure on the 100-yearold buildings on campus, including improving the water and sewer system, replacing roofs, and achieving ADA accessibility.

A recent survey of District residents showed 69% support of a bond measure, which is expected to cost $18 per $100K of assessed value. “It would cost a homeowner with a $2 million home, $360 per year,” said Calderon. “Our hope is that the community sees that we’ve been really responsible with their funds, and will

continue to be.”

It’s expected that the earliest construction would commence is 20222023. The next step is the board’s approval of the bond, which is expected in the coming months.

Cal Fire Launches Parolee Program

If you’ve been up in the foothills of Montecito the last few weeks, you may have seen crews of men clearing out brush from our local hillsides as part of the Montecito Fire Protection District’s vegetation management program. For the last several years, the crews used to perform the work have been inmate fire crews through the California Department of Forestry (Cal Fire). This year, Cal Fire has launched a new program that uses parolee firefighters, based on an initiative from former Governor Jerry Brown.

In October 2018, Cal Fire, in conjunction with California Conservation Corps (CCC) and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), identified the best inmates in their programs statewide who were eligible for parole, and created a new program based at the Ventura Training Center (VTC) in Camarillo. The program provides advanced firefighter training, certifi-

incarcerated men and women to fire camps since 1945. They provide vital services for the people of California, including wildland firefighting, and they perform approximately three million hours of firefighting work and approximately seven million hours of community work each year.

CDCR operates 27 firehouses at prisons across the state, and they are supervised by CDCR Fire Chiefs and Captains, and respond to fires and other emergencies on state prison grounds. They also provide mutual aid to the surrounding community, responding to incidents such as fires, car accidents, and other emergencies.

The new parolee program is available to eligible participants who previously served in a CDCR fire camp or institutional firehouse while incarcerated, who have been released to parole supervision within 90 days from a fire camp or firehouse, and who have at least 18 months remaining on their parole supervision term. Each group of trainees consists of up to 25 participants, beginning with adult men and later expanding to women as accommodations are constructed.

cations, and job readiness support to create a pathway for former offenders to compete for entry-level firefighting jobs with state, federal and local agencies. Crews are trained and available to assist in fire suppression, emergency incident response, and to perform fire prevention and resource management work. “Several of these parolees were here working as inmates during the Thomas Fire and debris flow, and are now back as parolees working on our hillsides,” said MFPD’s Maeve Juarez, Wildland Fire Specialist, who is overseeing the crews while they perform the work.

The program runs a total of 18 months and includes reentry planning, life skills training, job skills readiness, treatment and educational programs, basic forestry, firefighting courses and training, rehabilitative support services, education and reentry skills.

The last phase of the program – which is currently benefitting Montecito – is assignment for 12 months receiving in-service training as well as fuels reduction and community service project work, when not responding to fires and other types of emergencies.

Participants are required to complete their high school diploma if necessary, and the program has a strict application and selection process. Applicants are not eligible if they were convicted of sexual offenses or arson, or have any history of escape with force or violence. Each candidate is carefully screened and must be recommended by a Cal Fire Division Chief in consultation with CDCR fire camp staff, or by an institutional fire chief. They must have no serious rules violations while serving at camp or in a firehouse, no conditions of parole that would restrict their participation in the program, and be in good physical and mental health to withstand the rigors of the program. “The guys out here are hardworking, grateful, and proud to be serving the community,” Juarez said.

According to the CDCR, studies show that having a job greatly reduces a formerly incarcerated person’s likelihood to commit a new crime. The program provides an opportunity to earn comprehensive, industry-recognized firefighter training that makes participants more competitive when seeking entry-level firefighting jobs, not only with CAL FIRE and CCC, but also the Bureau of Land Management and local agencies. Other career opportunities include serving on fuel reduction crews and in the forest health field.

Participants receive a stipend of $1,905 for each month they are fully enrolled in the program, which requires them to live on the Camarillo campus. Just like any traditional parolee or probationer, VTC participants must adhere to their conditions of parole/probation at all times, including obeying all laws. “There is no guarantee that they are going to get a job in firefighting after completing this program, but we are giving them the tools to succeed,” said firefighter Tyler Davis with the Ventura Training Center, who oversees the crews while on assignment.

Montecito Fire is utilizing these crews three days a week to maintain its Fuel Treatment Network. The crews trim brush and grasses on the roadsides, and a private contractor then chips the material, with most of it being donated to the Bucket Brigade.

In a surprisingly decisive vote the UK chose Brexit – again. In December Boris Johnson led his Conservative Party to general election victory with an unexpectedly large majority.

This result secured him the numbers needed to carry through his promise to “get Brexit done” – an election trope that will join the list of the world’s most effective, such as “it’s the economy, stupid” and “there you go again.”

What this means for real estate markets remains to be seen. But there are signs that buyers and sellers in the UK, weary from three years of political uncertainty, are once again daring to dream of their next home.

There remain uncertainties: the UK still has a lot of work to do clinching worldwide trade deals, and no one is certain what arrangements there will be with the European Union concerning rights for UK home buyers and owners in countries such as France and Spain. It does seem likely, however, that there will be residency restrictions affecting the number of months Brits will be able to live in European Union countries each year.

These restrictions also affect UK buyers and vacation homeowners in the US. But up to now the attraction of Europe has been the length of

continuous residency available. Now that could change, and Europe may have near parity with the US in these restrictions, so more Brits could look for property across the Atlantic rather than across the English Channel. The shared language, the high standard of American homes and the exciting way of life are just three significant attractions.

With the UK’s trading horizons extended, there will be more Brits buying abroad for business and employment purposes, bringing the US into sharp focus for UK homebuyers.

All this won’t happen overnight. But it is the way the international real estate market works. The economic climate, fiscal measures, employment and political uncertainties all combine to alter national priorities. One year it is the Russians who are buying, then the Venezuelans and Brazilians, only for them to disappear and leave the field open to another nationality or two. It is the ebb and flow of the international real estate market.

Scope of Work: The City of Santa Barbara owns and operates the Cater Water Treatment Plant (Cater), a conventional water treatment plant that creates non-hazardous dewatered treatment solids (solids). The plant is located at 1150 San Roque Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. The City is seeking a qualified contractor for the collection, removal, hauling and disposal of solids from the water treatment plant.

2.2 Time for Completion. The planned timeframe for commencement and completion of construction of the Project is: 60 consecutive calendar days after Notice to Proceed.

2.3 Estimate. The estimate for this Project is: $156,000.00 2.4 Bidders’ Conference. A MANDATORY bidders’ conference will be held on January 30, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., at the following location: Bohnett Park restrooms located at 614 W. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara, CA (cross street San Pascual Street) for the purpose of acquainting all prospective bidders with the Contract Documents and the Worksite. Prevailing Wage Requirements.

5.1 General. This Project is subject to the prevailing wage requirements applicable to the locality in which the Work is to be performed for each craft, classification or type of worker needed to perform the Work, including employer payments for health and welfare, pension, vacation, apprenticeship and similar purposes.

FAIR EMPLOYMENT PRACTICE ACT Contractor agrees in accordance with Section 1735 and 1777.6 of California Labor Code, and the California Fair Employment Practice Act (Sections 1410-1433) that in the hiring of common or skilled labor for the performance of any work under this contract or any subcontract hereunder, no contractor, material supplier or vendor shall, by reason of age (over 40), ancestry, color, mental or physical disability, sex, gender identity and expression, marital status, medical condition (cancer or genetic characteristics), national origin, race, religious belief, or sexual orientation, discriminate against any person who is qualified and available to perform the work to which such employment relates. The Contractor further agrees to be in compliance with the City of Santa Barbara’s Nondiscriminatory Employment Provisions as set forth in Chapter 9 of the Santa Barbara Municipal Code.

5.2 Rates. The prevailing rates are on file with City and available online at http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR. Each Contractor and Subcontractor must pay no less than the specified rates to all workers employed to work on the Project. The schedule of per diem wages is based upon a working day of eight hours. The rate for holiday and overtime work must be at least time and one-half.

5.3 Compliance. The Contract will be subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR, under Labor Code section 1771.4.

5.4 Davis Bacon. Pursuant to Section 1773 of the California Labor Code, the general prevailing wage rates in the county in which the work is to be done have been determined by the Director of the California Department of Industrial Relations. These wages are set forth in the General Prevailing Wage Rates for this Project, available at the City of Santa Barbara, General Services Manager, Purchasing Office, 310 E. Ortega Street, Santa Barbara, California, and available from the California Department of Industrial Relations’ Internet web site at http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR/PWD. The Federal minimum wage rates for this Project as predetermined by the United States Secretary of Labor are set forth in the specifications and in copies of these specifications that may be examined at the offices described above where project plans, special provisions, and bid forms may be seen. Addenda to modify the Federal minimum wage rates, if necessary, will be issued to holders of these specifications. Future effective general prevailing wage rates, which have been predetermined and are on file with the California Department of Industrial Relations are referenced but not printed in the general prevailing wage rates.

Attention is directed to the Federal minimum wage rate requirements in the specifications. If there is a difference between the minimum wage rates predetermined by the Secretary of Labor and the general prevailing wage rates determined by the Director of the California Department of Industrial Relations for similar classifications of labor, the Contractor and subcontractors shall pay not less than the higher wage rate. The City of Santa Barbara will not accept lower State wage rates not specifically included in the Federal minimum wage determinations. This includes "helper" (or other classifications based on hours of experience) or any other classification not appearing in the Federal wage determinations. Where Federal wage determinations do not contain the State wage rate determination otherwise available for use by the Contractor and subcontractors, the Contractor and subcontractors shall pay not less than the Federal minimum wage rate, which most closely approximates the duties of the employees in question.

LIVING WAGE Any service purchase order contract issued as a result of this request for bids or quotes may be subject to the City’s Living Wage Ordinance No 5384, SBMC 9.128 and its implementing regulations.

CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE Contractor must submit to the contracted department within ten (10) calendar days of an order, AND PRIOR TO START OF WORK, certificates of Insurance naming the City of Santa Barbara as Additional Insured in accordance with the attached Insurance Requirements.

This is a federally-assisted project and Davis-Bacon (DBRA) requirements will be strictly enforced. Federal Labor Standards provisions HUD-4010 will be incorporated into the successful bidder’s contract and is attached hereto as Attachment A. Contractors, including all subcontractors and apprentices, must be eligible to participate. Federal Wage Determination #CA20200014 dated 01/10/2020 is incorporated herein and is attached hereto as Appendix C, Exhibit H. However, actual prevailing wage rates will be determined as of the bid opening date. If any modifications have been issued to the wage decision, the contractor must adhere to the modified wage decision.

Performance and Payment Bonds. The successful bidder will be required to provide separate performance and payment bonds for 100% of the Contract Price regardless of contract dollar amount.

Substitution of Securities. Substitution of appropriate securities in lieu of retention amounts from progress payments is permitted under Public Contract Code section 22300.

Subcontractor List. Subcontractors shall be submitted through PlanetBids portal. Failure to do will result in rejection of your bid.

However, we overlook Adams’ bias because we’re all fairly pleased with the result. For that, history has rewarded Mr. Adams with an even higher honor perhaps than it gave Mr. Franklin: his image on his eponymous beer – made even more well known by being served at Obama’s famous “Beer Summit.”

Two more of the most revered names in America and in journalism – Hearst and Pulitzer – are today the names behind two of the most prestigious and coveted journalistic prizes. But before that they were actually two founders and main perpetrators of inflammatory, saber rattling yellow journalism – that many believe accelerated the ignition of the Spanish-American War. Was the war of sensationalism between Hearst’s New York Journal and Pulitzer’s New York World so different from today’s pro-wrestling smackdown between Fox News and MSNBC? So far as I can tell, the Golden Age of Journalism is always calculated as the current date minus three decades. When I began my career at ABC News in New York (okay, it was 32 years ago!) it was presumably one of those Golden Ages.

While the notable journalists I worked with at the Network (Roone Arledge, Peter Jennings, Ted Koppel) took seriously their “journalistic responsibility,” reporting “the truth” was never that simple.

While we were all still basking in the post coital afterglow of the reporting that led to All the President’s Men, even at that prestigious news outlet what led the evening broadcast were frequently stories from “above the fold” at one or two national newspapers earlier that day – namely The New York Times, the Washington Post (and occasionally the Wall Street Journal). And what got those stories above the fold in the first place was most often the handiwork of a handful of powerhouse PR firms. And so it is that the line between re-ported, pur-ported, and dictated has gotten, if anything, more squiggly over time.

One does not need to go back very far, even here in Santa Barbara, to see the destructive toll of editorial bias on our region’s oldest broadsheet.

Of course, there is almost always reporter bias, as Susan Sontag pointed out in so many of her essays, by virtue of where the reporter points his or her gaze, tape recorder, or lens. Earlier this year the President tweeted out a photo of Nancy Pelosi becoming, purportedly, unhinged in a meeting. Though other angles of the same event showed Ms. Pelosi looming over and excoriating our commander in chief – the internet’s latest version of “Is the dress gold or blue?”

– interpretation says more about the viewer than the actual story.

Speaking of the internet, the bigger issue I see confronting journalism today is not so much bias – which has always been and will always be – but the dissemination of news being largely controlled by what Sacha Baron Cohen coined “The Silicon 6” made up of information oligarchs: Mark Zuckerberg, Larry

Page, Sergey Brin, Susan Wojcicki (YouTube), Sundar Pichai (Google), and Jack Dorsey at Twitter – none of whom seem to have any discernable interest in the responsibility that comes with the reporting and dissemination of news.

Facebook’s recent decision not to make any attempt to verify fake news has perhaps the most serious implication for the future of “news.” Unlike Pulitzer and Hearst whose journalistic institutions reformed their sensationalist ways and took on the responsibility that comes with governing the 4th estate, the Silicon 6 info gatekeepers have a louder and wider megaphone than any six people have ever had, but so far all staunchly refuse to hold the enormous platforms they created to any sort of ethical standard. I pray they have ethical revelations, as Hearst and Pulitzer did.

So, what’s the solution?

This is where local journalism, harvested in small batches and provided by journalists steeped in the community, comes in. First of all, local news arguably explores the issues that most affect your daily life – your water, air, food, and immediate quality of life issues. But also your personal security, feelings of connectedness, and sense of belonging. The psychologist and educator Abraham Maslow called this our “hierarchy of needs.” Unless we’re feeling secure about our most immediate and most local needs, it’s hard to move on to the enormous national and global issues upon which so many believe it’s hard to feel our effect.

Another great thing about local news is its generally not big enough to attract hacks, bots, and flacks. Local news is current events and opinions in its original unwashed farmer’s market format – freshly yanked from the ground.

It is in the spirit of providing you with the most unadulterated news possible – so that you can make important, informed decisions for yourself – that I invite you to join us at the Montecito Journal Candidate Debate for County Supervisor between Laura Capps and Das Williams on January 27 at 6 pm at the Music Academy of the West’s Hahn Hall. Questions will be asked by debate moderators Gwyn Lurie (me) and Jonathan Bastian of KCRW, as well as by Montecito community leaders – and by YOU. n Wednesday, January 29, 2020, Laguna Blanca School will host its third annual TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool event. With this year’s theme set as RE.IMAGINE, speakers and attendees will be encouraged to re-think what they know, rebel against what’s been done before, and re-discover truths about society and the world around them. Members of the student team have been hard at work “reimagining” what a traditional TEDx conference is like and creating an entirely new event experience.

TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool began in 2017 in preparation for the first-ever event in 2018. The program operates as a non-profit, both organized and fundraised by a team of approximately 20 high school students. Under a license granted by the TED organization – a nonprofit devoted to sharing ideas – students work for one semester to produce a TEDx event (x = independently organized TED event) for our Santa Barbara community. With three sessions of carefully curated TEDx talks, our audience is encouraged to challenge their beliefs and explore new ideas.

The 2020 event features both speakers and performers from around the world. The lineup includes former Stuntwoman of the Year and American Ninja Warrior Jessie Graff; Ghanian soccer professional and founder of the Fifi Soccer Foundation, an organization empowering Ghanian orphans through education and sport, Fifi Baiden; and high-risk biology explorer and host of TV show Extinct or Alive Forrest Galante. Current Laguna sophomore Madeleine Nicks will be discussing period empowerment and how to diminish the stigma around menstruation. Audience members will also enjoy speed painter Amy Burkman’s unconventional art demonstration, short videos made by members of the Laguna Blanca and Santa Barbara communities, and a faculty panel.

What adaptations will result in the most beautiful necessarily new landscape in Montecito? Who is thinking usefully about this existential (if only to Montecito) question? Who has a vision for it?

The denial really has to stop. Ask Australia. Ask Paradise.

Water Supply Plan Needed

D

uring the recent severe drought, water restrictions coupled with financial penalties were adopted to encourage water conservation. For single family residence (SFR) the penalties affected consumption of water above 25 hundred cubic feet (hcf) per month.

Since the average Montecito SFR uses 5 hcf/month for interior use and 17 hcf/ month for exterior use the financial penalty fell heavily on those residences that use large amounts of water for exterior use i.e. landscaping. This situation provided incentive to push for a water supply portfolio that would meet all water customer needs in the next drought.

Desalinated ocean water was promoted as an additional water supply which would complement existing Montecito Water District (MWD) supplies. Subsequent events resulted in identifying a Water Supply Agreement (WSA) with the City of Santa Barbara as a way to obtain additional water priced on the City’s desalination facility costs.

Unfortunately the WSA requires MWD to pay $4.2 million per year for water even when it is surplus to MWD needs. For example this year, and most years, MWD customer needs can be met solely by water stored in Cachuma Lake and Jameson Lake. MWD will defer accepting its State Water Project water allocation this year because it is surplus to customer needs. However MWD would still be required to pay $4.2 million to the City per the WSA terms for water it can’t use.

In the last two elections a new MWD Board was elected with a goal to meet all customer needs including landscaping for large customers in the next drought. The Board appears to believe that this goal can be accomplished only by signing the WSA which will result in a significant water bill increase for all customers. In effect all customers will be burdened by larger water bills every month so that those customers who need more than 25 hcf/month primarily for their landscaping won’t be financially penalized in the next drought.

The goal of meeting the water needs

of all customers during the next drought is important. However it is possible that there are other water supply scenarios that can accomplish this goal with better terms and significantly less cost than the WSA. The cost aspect shouldn’t be ignored because it is significant and borne by all MWD customers.

Why has the present MWD Board resisted examining other water supply scenarios now that they know the onerous terms, conditions and cost of the WSA? Isn’t it reasonable for the Board to update the MWD 2007 Water Supply Management Plan (Plan) based on information gained in the recent severe drought?

An updated Plan would examine the reliability and cost of existing MWD water supplies, and additional supplies such as the WSA, drought water supply agreements with other water agencies, water purchase agreements, recycled water, and water supply enhancements such as the Semitropic Groundwater Banking and Exchange Program.

Updating the Plan will cost approximately $50,000 which is a pittance compared to the WSA cost of $200+ million over its 50-year term. The updated Plan could provide alternative water supply scenarios which could be compared to the WSA. A final decision would be made by the Board after evaluating the reliability and cost of all water supply scenarios.

Please write, email, or phone the Board or General Manager and inform them that you believe it is important for them to have additional information on alternative water supply scenarios contained in an updated Plan before they make a final decision on the WSA. Also you can attend a Board meeting and express your view.

If you take no action you can expect significant increases to your water bill in the future with no discernible benefit for most customers.

Shop Till You Drop

N

o matter how much the world changes, buyers and sellers will always need each other.

But what we have called “stores” were in a way like the dinosaurs – they got bigger and bigger until, so to speak, they ruled the earth, and then something happened, and now, in our own time, we see them slowly disappearing.

The dinosaurs’ fate apparently resulted from the impact on Earth of an object from outer space. What is happening in the case of stores is something even more Earth-shaking. It is called the Internet, which is in the process of demolishing vast numbers of brick and mortar establishments. But we still need some means of getting tangible goods to the customer – which gives new importance to shipping services.

Ships are much less involved in “shipping” today, but for many centuries, some kind of floating craft or vessel was the only means to transport people, or anything else, across any unbridgeable stretch of open water. In fact, it was because of this that I am living in Santa Barbara today. Charles P. Low, a great grandfather of my wife, Dorothy, was a captain of one of the clipper ships which were the main vehicles of trade between the U.S. and China. That was, of course, before the Panama Canal existed, so sailing from our East coast to China meant a long, arduous, and sometimes very dangerous, journey, all the way down around the southern tip of South America.

And those beautiful ships were propelled only by the winds.

But the China trade was also extremely lucrative. Captain Low was able to retire in his 40s, and of all the places he had seen, he chose to settle in Santa Barbara. He built a large house on the Mesa, founded a family, and became a pillar of what was then (in the 1870s) still a very small community.

Dorothy often came on visits to family, but until she met me, she had never actually lived in Santa Barbara.

However, it was obvious to me that her great desire was to do so. And so, in 1973, we made the big move from San Francisco, where we had already established a thriving business, based on marketing my creative work.

So that was how the clipper ship phenomenon affected my own life.

standardized “containers” – essentially huge boxes – in which everything from cars to canned goods is shipped today, on vessels which require only minimal crews.

Another form of trade once thought to be highly romantic was by camel caravan, particularly across the desert wastes of Saharan Africa or inner Asia. The latter formed part of the fabled “Silk Road,” which brought the exotic luxuries of the East to a Europe which was still emerging from the Dark Ages. I myself have been privileged to retrace part of that route, and to see what remains of the western end of the Great Wall of China. One thing that impressed me was a fort with a gate on its west side, through which exiles were forced to pass, although nothing was thought to lie beyond but the fearsome Gobi Desert.

Even today, trading customs are of course very different in different parts of the world. In some cultures, you would be considered extremely naïve if you generally paid the first price that was asked. In such places, back and forth bargaining is taken for granted, as part of the process of arriving at a mutually agreeable price.

Elsewhere, however, such haggling is thought to be dishonorable, and the set price is what ought to be paid, without any fuss.

Customs do change, however, with circumstances. In our country, within living memory, it was assumed that, when you purchased gasoline, an attendant would do the pumping, and might even be expected to wipe your windshield. Today, in most states, such services, if provided at all, are available only at an extra charge.

But one’s daily bread, and other foods, will probably be among the last products forced out of stores. I personally, having no other religion, still think of my local Ralphs supermarket as the nearest thing I have to a cathedral. If the hand of Death must find me somewhere, I can think of no finer finish than to drop where I shop. •MJ

ave you seen all the promos for Restaurant Week?

It’s a national phenomenon throughout the winter season, actually: destinations leveraging the appeal of their top chefs (and the allure of value) to entice consumers and beef up foot traffic during a historically slow travel time of the year. Santa Barbara’s Restaurant Week returns February 21 through March 6 and will feature prix-fixe menus at top-tier eateries all around town; in Montecito, they’ll include Lucky’s and the Biltmore’s Bella Vista.

The one I’m really excited about is the one happening throughout the Santa Ynez Valley right now. It’s Restaurant Weeks, actually – plural – since its run from this past Sunday through January 31 will have offered

hungry travelers almost two full weeks of tasty savings. The promotion screams “staycation,” by the way, with several hotels offering discounts and free upgrades during the Weeks’ run.

“Chef Conrad Gonzalez at Cisko Kid [in Los Alamos] will use locally sourced heirloom corn to take his dishes to the next farm-to-table level,” Sim told me, “while Luca Crestanelli and his team at S.Y. Kitchen [in Santa Ynez] will offer dishes not part of the regular menu, like Zuppa Celestina, which features a clear beef broth with thinly sliced crepes.”

In Buellton, Jeff and Janet Olson of Industrial Eats continue their annual charitable push with a culturally-inspired menu which, this year, features recipes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and whose proceeds benefit humanitarian causes in that Central African nation.

The current irony is that Das now faces a bit of a horse race, not against a traditional weak Republican challenger, but against the dynamic daughter of the politically powerful Democratic doyenne, U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps.

Who is Das Williams?

Dohassen Gault-Williams, better known as “Das,” was born on June 29,1974.

He split his adolescence between his mother’s home in Ojai and his father’s in Isla Vista, where he became involved in local politics and election campaigns.

Forced to drop out of his senior year at Dos Pueblos High School because his mother moved to San Luis Obispo County, Das chose to stay in Santa Barbara to attend City College, while sleeping in his car in order to stay in town. His passion for politics kicked up like a windstorm when Das spent two semesters in South Africa working with Nelson Mandela on Mandela’s first presidential campaign in 1994.

After 2½ years at SBCC, Das transferred to UC Berkeley, earning his bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He returned to Santa Barbara to work on Hannah-Beth Jackson’s campaign for State Assembly, then followed her to Sacramento. He next attended graduate school at UCSB’s Bren School of Environment Science & Management with a focus on water pollution, planning processes, and land use law. Seeking practical political experience while at the Bren School, Das ran for and won a seat on the Santa Barbara City Council in 2003 before finishing his master’s degree.

In 2010 when Pedro Nava was termed out in the State Assembly, Das filled the void by running and winning his vacated California State Assembly seat.

He served for two three-year terms before being termed out himself in 2016.

In addition, Das has held teaching posts at both Antioch College and in Junior High School.

Even though this year’s opponent could claim that behind every great man lies an even better woman, Das Williams might counter that the “better women” behind him are his wife, Jonnie; his two daughters, Ya’Ash and Khaya; and his long-time Chief of Staff, Darcel Elliott.

Both Das and Laura are Democrats Cut from the Same Policy Cloth

In terms of Democratic policy positions, both Laura Capps and Das Williams are about as close as two halves of a zipper. Both are staunch supporters of renewable energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. As a city councilmember, Das spearheaded efforts to require that 30% of the City of Santa Barbara’s energy come from renewable sources by 2011.

As a state Assemblyman, Das upped the ante by advocating that 33% of the entire state’s energy come from renewable sources by 2020. Still not satisfied, he authored legislation to increase the renewable energy goal to 50% by 2030. He has worked consistently to stop offshore oil and natural gas drilling.

Both Das and Laura are strong advocates for the homeless; oppose fracking; support sanctuary cities; favor decriminalizing illegal border crossings; oppose a border wall, support climate change and the “Green New Deal”; favor stricter gun control; embrace forgiveness of student loans; support public service unions; and oppose serious public pension reform, including lifetime retiree health care coverage.

Both champion affordable housing; all environmental causes; elimination of all fossil and nuclear fuels; Medicare for All; free college tuition; income redistribution; and higher taxes on corporations and the so-called wealthy.

Let’s take a closer look at Das’ record of accomplishments:

City Councilman for City of Santa Barbara: 2003-2009

In 2003, while still in graduate school at the UCSB Bren School of Management, Das successfully ran for the Santa Barbara City Council. He established himself as a leader in the effort to stop offshore oil drilling, protecting the coast and local water supplies by working to restore local creeks and wetlands and preserve open space. He led the push to expand the city’s public transit system.

While serving as a Santa Barbara City Councilmember, Das also served on the Board of Trustees for Peabody Charter School where he helped avoid teacher layoffs during the Great Recession.

State Assemblyman: 2010-2016

In 2010, Santa Barbara and Ventura County voters elected Das to represent them in the California State Assembly. He was re-elected twice more in 2012 and 2014 before being termed out at the end of 2016. His signature accomplishments included passing strict standards to decrease the state’s dependence on fossil fuels and protect groundwater. Additionally, Das established himself as a champion for California’s public higher education system, serving as chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and authoring legislation focused on creating a dedicated revenue source for higher education and establishing harsher punishments for students who commit sexual assault.

First District Supervisor, Santa Barbara County: 2017-2020

In June 2016, Das was elected First District Supervisor – one of five elected officials to govern Santa Barbara County – a position he currently holds. As Supervisor, Das has provided leadership through the Thomas Fire and subsequent 1/9 debris flow that rocked Santa Barbara County. In addition, he has taken a proactive position to develop clean energy locally; supported the legalization, permitting and growth of the cannabis industry in the county; and diverted drug revenue to protect vital public services, such as our libraries.

On January 9, 2018 Montecito was rocked by a mud and debris flow emanating from the Thomas Fire which cost the Montecito community 23 precious lives, 400 homes, and businesses destroyed or damaged, and multiple mandatory evacuations and power losses while emerging from the muck and mud.

Das and his County team sprang into action. Using funding from FEMA, Caltrans and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the cash-strapped county cleaned inadequate creek beds and debris basins; fast-tracked “Like-for-Like” rebuilds of demolished homes; helped permit the community-funded ring nets to double the effectiveness of the existing undersized debris basins; replaced storm damaged bridges, albeit two years too late; and expanded efforts to enlarge the county’s debris basin capacity on San Ysidro Creek at Randall Road.

Stung by L.A. Times criticism for poorly maintained creek beds, inadequate debris basins and faulty evacuation warning systems, County Public Works and Das fought back with support for the community-based and community funded Bucket Brigade; the Project for Resilient Communities; and the builders of the North Jameson Lane pathway.

Das claims he has been central to restoring a community culture of resiliency and renewal, even while lacking a massive infusion of county funding.

The Carpinteria Marijuana Scuffle

Bud growers in Carpinteria have saluted the efforts of Das Williams to develop an orderly process to convert former flower nurseries into more profitable marijuana factories. In the process, the county won the dubious distinction of earning the label, “Santa Barbara County – The Marijuana Growing Capital of the World.” Unfortunately, the unmistakable aroma of legalized marijuana for recreational use, wafting across Carpinteria schoolyards, has created strong and vocal concern from a group of citizens labeled as “Concerned Carpinterians.”

Das has been criticized for accepting a reputed $60,500 in campaign cash from individuals and businesses related to the billion-dollar cannabis lobby. He notes that he does not take campaign contributions from oil, tobacco, or vaping donors, and adds that he has halted accepting contributions from marijuana farmers whose applications for permits are before the Board of Supervisors.

The Power of the Incumbency:

Das Williams has all the obvious advantages of incumbency which includes the support of the Democratic Party and strong visibility and name recognition.

He has the support of local labor unions; a long list of Democratic donors and traditional Democratic endorsements.

I wanted to spend more time up there,” said the L.A. resident who did a lot of underwater photography before embarking on the wine trilogy.

What he ended up with is a tale that covers the divers who pluck urchins from the bottom of the ocean amid extraordinarily dangerous conditions, the environmentalists and merchants, and the chefs who prepare the much-desired delicacy at restaurants all over the world. Plus sharks.

“It’s a food film, not a shark attack movie, but it was crazy out there,” Wise said. “And it’s not like any food movie I’ve ever seen before. Every one of the divers knows someone who’s passed away somehow doing their job. It’s an incredibly dangerous way to make a living. No accountants have that problem.”

The divers are a wild and dedicated bunch, the filmmaker said. “It’s a nature documentary on people, and people are animals. Part of why it took so long to make was having to find a way to create a narrative while stepping back and observing those animals in action.”

Not to mention the environmental aspect, the “insane difficulty in collecting urchin,” the culinary aspect.

“There are so many things in that one organism. Urchin is a simple thing,

but an intensely difficult story to tell.”

Stephanie Mutz, the only female urchin diver working in the area, along with several other divers, plus some chefs who serve urchin and many others who appear in the movie and its Emmy-winning composer Trevor Morris are expected to be on hand when The Delicacy has its world premiere on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, as part of SBIFF’s Features and Screen Cuisine programs.

SBIFF’s Second Week

There are just three days left in SBIFF 35, and with all of the tribute evenings being front-loaded at this year’s festival, no more stars walking the red carpet. Unless you are an advocate of the auteur theory, that is, in which case there’s one more big event on the SBIFF slate in the annual Outstanding Directors of the Year Award on Thursday, January 23. The helmers’ names for 2020 still hadn’t been announced at press time, but the last two years featured every one of the five nominated filmmakers, so it’s a good bet we’ll at least have a few of them.

Meanwhile, several intriguing films were still to have their world premiere screenings at SBIFF as this issue

ick off the brand-new year with a workshop that’s all about anticipating the end. White Lotus Foundation’s Santa Barbara Retreat Center begins the 2020 series of monthly retreats with “Preparing for the Final Asana: End of Life Law, Medicine, Policy and What Yoga Offers,” co-led by landmark attorney Kathryn Tucker, who is the Executive Director of the End of Life Liberty Project and a White Lotus Yoga Teacher Training graduate, and Tracey Rich, a director of the White Lotus Foundation who has been serving the organization through her teaching and in the design and development of the Santa Barbara Retreat Center since its inception in 1983. Project Information.

2.1 Location and Description. The Project is located at locations throughout the City where paving cuts and excavations have been performed, and is described as follows: Locate and confirm locations to be repaired, remove existing patch, compact subgrade, place and compact base and asphalt or concrete for a permanent patch per the specifications. The work includes all labor, material, supervision, plant and equipment necessary to complete the following: sawcutting and removal of temporary street sections; grinding (cold milling) to remove and replace AC; grinding of failed areas and repair, spot leveling, apply temporary traffic control and signing, notification, and performing all other related work as necessary to provide a completed project; all in accordance with the Standard Specifications, City Standard details, Plans, and Special Provisions.

2.2 Time for Completion. The Project will be performed over the course of five years on an as needed basis. City anticipates that the Work will begin on or about March 1, 2020, but the anticipated start date is provided solely for convenience and is neither certain nor binding.

2.3 Estimated Cost. The estimated construction cost is $2,250,000 over the course of 5 years. Subject to actual budgetary appropriations, the annual amount is estimated to be $450,000.

3.

License and Registration Requirements.

3.1 License. This Project requires a valid California contractor’s license for the following classification(s): A. 3.2 DIR Registration. City may not accept a Bid Proposal from or enter into the Contract with a bidder, without proof that the bidder is registered with the California Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) to perform public work pursuant to Labor Code § 1725.5, subject to limited legal exceptions.

Bid Security. The bid security must guarantee that within ten days after City issues the Notice of Award, the successful bidder will execute the Contract and submit the payment and performance bonds, insurance certificates and endorsements, and any other submittals required by the Contract Documents and as specified in the Notice of Award.

6.

Prevailing Wage Requirements.

6.1 General. Pursuant to California Labor Code § 1720 et seq., this Project is subject to the prevailing wage requirements applicable to the locality in which the Work is to be performed for each craft, classification or type of worker needed to perform the Work, including employer payments for health and welfare, pension, vacation, apprenticeship and similar purposes.

6.2 Rates. These prevailing rates are on file with the City and are available online at http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR. Each Contractor and Subcontractor must pay no less than the specified rates to all workers employed to work on the Project. The schedule of per diem wages is based upon a working day of eight hours. The rate for holiday and overtime work must be at least time and one-half.

6.3 Compliance. The Contract will be subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the DIR, under Labor Code § 1771.4.

Performance and Payment Bonds. The successful bidder will be required to provide performance and payment bonds, each for 100% of the Contract Price, as further specified in the Contract Documents.

8.

Substitution of Securities. Substitution of appropriate securities in lieu of retention amounts from progress payments is permitted under Public Contract Code § 22300.

9.

Subcontractor List. Each Subcontractor must be registered with the DIR to perform work on public projects. Way back in the spring of 2016, we wrote about the upcoming release of Songs in the Key of Double Bass, an exciting album debut from local singer-songwriter Danny Briere’s new acoustic project featuring two brilliant bassists who call Santa Barbara home: the decades-long veteran James Connolly, who has had a hand in innumerable musical projects from writing scores for Montecito’s Lit Moon Project to his own Gove County String Quartet, and David Piltch, the stand-up sensation whose early career included backing up Chet Baker, Art Pepper and Mose Allison and recording and touring with Blood, Sweat & Tears, before hooking up with Bob Dylan, Elton John and, most extensively, k d lang.

The group came together when Briere, who knew both bassists socially, mentioned the idea. Each said they would be in if the other was, so before long Briere saw his fantasy of standing between the two bassists as they fleshed out his new songs come into reality.

“For about three minutes at the first rehearsal,” Briere recalled.

“Then David just picked up his bass and headed over next to Jim because he wanted to him hear him better.

That’s when I knew they were into this.”

The final of three warm-up gigs at Connolly’s Piano Kitchen as the album was being recorded in early 2016 was one of the standout shows of the year, with Briere, the bassists and drummer Justin Flint engaging in organic interplay that gave Briere’s emotionally evocative songs added textures and layers. One only hoped that some of that magic would show up in what was captured in the studio.

So why are we revisiting the project more than 40 months later? Because Briere is just now getting around to actually putting Songs in the Key of Double Bass out. The happy if belated event that will be marked by their quartet’s first show in years back at the Piano Kitchen, the intimate off-Haley Street space that also serves as Connolly’s workshop. As before, 23 – 30 January 2020

Briere expects several special guests, including vocalists-guitarists Jesse Rhodes, Jamey Geston, and Jenna Tico (daughter of Santa Barbara’s other bass stalwart Randy Tico), while Connolly will likely be manning piano, the theramin, banjo, and other instruments along with the double bass at the 7:30 pm show on Saturday, January 25.

Briere gave us an update of the project.

Q. Why did it take so long to get the album out?

A. The truth is I can be quite a procrastinator and with resources running tight it took me three years to follow through to bring it home. But a little bit of feedback from the guys about wondering why we’d made the record if it wasn’t coming out goes a long way. It was also always tough to get everybody in the same room at the same time again. But we got together and played about two weeks ago and it was really wonderful, just as amazing as it had been before.

Hearing the show live, it seemed very organic. Was that true in the studio, too?

Very much. I gave them a lot of leeway, and very little instruction, maybe saying something like, “Can we be a bit more string quartet-ish,” or looking for something a bit more lyrical.

It was only loose artsy direction and they just went with it. I think it was a lot of fun for them.

Are you happy with how it came out?

Oh, yeah. It’s great. When you listen to the record it’s remarkable to hear how much they (Connolly and Piltch) are in sync with each other. One will go up and the other will move down so they’re not getting in each other’s way. It’s beautiful and really something to hear. I’m proud of having facilitated what happened. It’s really great playing.

You had a lot of songs that seemed very timely back in 2016. Do they still resonate?

They were very much about lost love, a subject that was raw for me then, and one I love to dive into deep and dark. But now that [beloved Santa Barbara producer] Robinson Eikenberry passed away – we were close for 22 years – my writing is more focused toward where everybody eventually goes: about mortality, the concept of not being here anymore rather than lost love. So looking at them from a distance I realize I wrote a lot about lost relationships.

But I stand by them and I still like them a lot. And the guys in the band are still very much behind them, too.

And we’re planning on making a second record, hopefully on a tighter schedule.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 24 New Music is Ruehr-ing to Go – UCSB Music string and piano faculty members perform works by Elena Ruehr, the prolific veteran American composer who is reaching a critical mass of public recognition after a quarter century of writing for multiple genres. Ruehr, who teaches music theory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is known for her lyrical and rhythmically vibrant compositions, which have been praised as “sumptuously scored and full of soaring melodies” (The New York Times) as well as “unspeakably gorgeous” (Gramophone). A former Guggenheim Fellow and composer-in-residence with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Ruehr has previously collaborated with many of today’s leading artists and ensembles, including the Cypress String Quartet, where she worked closely with now-UCSB assistant professor Jennifer Kloetzel. The cellist’s former ensemble commissioned three works from Ruehr, while Kloetzel also commissioned or premiered three other cello works. Tonight’s program, which represents the culmination of Ruehr’s two-day residence at UCSB, open with Kloetzel’s performance of Ruehr’s 2013 “Lift” for solo cello, which was inspired by Nobel Prize-winner Malala

FRIDAY, JANUARY 24 ‘Mother of Modern Dance’ Comes Home – Martha Graham was already 26 years old and eight years past graduating from Santa Barbara High School when women earned the right to vote via the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Fittingly, the Martha Graham Dance Company – the oldest dance company in America, founded just six years later – returns to her teenage hometown to perform “The EVE Project,” a program created by the company that makes bold statements about female power as it places signature Graham classics alongside new commissions. The collection features signature Graham classics – including Diversion of Angels and Chronicle – plus new works inspired by her legacy. Graham, inarguably the mother of American modern dance, a choreographer who forever altered the fabric of dance, created an entirely new style of movement, making a lasting impact as a groundbreaking creator who influenced generations of artists.

Martha Graham Dance Company has been an unparalleled resource in nurturing many of the leading choreographers and dancers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Merce Cunningham, Erick Hawkins, Pearl Lang, Pascal Rioult, and Paul Taylor, while her repertoire of 181 works has engaged noted performers such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Claire Bloom, Margot Fonteyn, Liza Minnelli, Rudolf Nureyev, Maya Plisetskaya and Kathleen Turner. That influence has continued uninterrupted in the two decades since her death in 1991, while her style, the Graham technique, which reshaped American dance, is still taught worldwide. FRIDAY, JANUARY 24 You Wreck-less Me – Guitarist and songwriter Mike Campbell – who spent decades recording and touring with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers since before the band’s first album – formed The Dirty Knobs 15 years ago as an outlet to play some of his original songs as well as rock classics and keep his chops honed between working on albums and tours with Petty. For several years, the band virtually exclusively played intimate, almost incognito, performances in and around Los Angeles and environs, in effect becoming one of the house bands at SOhO through frequent appearances.

The gigs slowed down in the mid-2010s, but when Petty passed away in 2017, Campbell worked on healing some of the pain of the loss of his close friend through wholeheartedly getting back into his own music. Now, not only are the Knobs coming back to town to play a pair of concerts back at SOhO as part of the club’s 25th anniversary series of benefits, the shows also represent the first two out-of-town dates prior to the band’s first extended, cross-country tour slated for the spring. Campbell and Co. – Jason Sinay on guitar and vocals (Neil Diamond, Ivan Neville), Lance Morrison on bass (Don Henley), and Matt Laug on drums (Slash, Alanis Morissette) – are going on the road to promote Wreckless Abandon, the Dirty Knobs’ debut album, featuring a dozen songs showcasing the Knobs’ R&B and boogie-based classic rock and roll, all of which were written by Campbell. TUESDAY, JANUARY 28 Mash-up with a Message – The classically-trained string duo Black Violin – aka violinist Kev Marcus and violist Wil Baptiste – have created a unique mash-up of classical, hip hop, rock and R&B via fusing today’s sounds with classical virtuosity. The duo, from South Florida, began playing together in their high school orchestra class, and reunited after college to establish a distinguished, genre-bending sound that has often been described as “classical boom.” Fresh off an extended tour of the same name, Black Violin released a new album, Take the Stairs, in November, when it landed coveted spots at the top of the Classical Crossover, Hip Hop and R&B charts. Adding DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes to the lineup, they’ve gone back on the road to launch the new year, Impossible Tour, which aims to spread the message that anything is possible and there are no limits to what one can achieve, regardless of circumstance, with a focus on positivity and encouragement.
