Horseback Riding 101

Horse riding is for beginners, but all levels are welcome. Should be fun and exciting! In the first few lessons, riders will have the opportunity to interact with their horses on the ground. Intermediate Cabbing: Colors!

Expand your cabbing skills with colorful stones, whether hard or soft, brittle, prone to chipping or undercutting. Learn the best cabbing techniques to meet these challenges. For the SPRING term, class will choose four natural purple stones to work on (could include Amethyst, Lepidolite, Stichtite, Fluorite, Tiffany Stone, Charoite, or Purpurite). Love the look of lace, but think it’s too complicated? This course will break down the fundamentals of lace patterns and ease you into what is considered unparalleled around the world. Laser Wood Engraving

In this class, a small laser engraver will be used to engrave your name or small icons on a wooden tag. Learn how to use laser engraver just by using a simple phone app. The size of the name or small icons will be within 1x1 inch. You are welcome to bring any wooden object within 5x5 inches with no coating or wooden hardener to engrave on. A small wooden charm will be provided.

Design a personalized wood sign using paint; stencils; assorted craft materials and high tech equipment. A laser engraver and vinyl plotter is on-site, so you leave with a custom, professional sign for yourself or someone special!

Enameling is the ancient technique of firing colored glass in powder form on metal. In this class, we will use basic enameling techniques, along with glass beads to create unique patterns on metal, and everyone will make a pin charm.

Flip Cup Acrylic Paint Pouring

Flip cup painting for beginners is an acrylic pouring technique where different colors of paint are mixed with a pouring medium, before being poured into a larger cup. A canvas is placed face down on the cup, then flipped so the cup is upside down on the canvas. In this course, students will learn the basics of acrylic flip cup paint pouring and will produce a 12x12 acrylic flip cup painting. The instructor will assist the students by providing positive commentary, troubleshooting paint issues, and recommending different techniques. Please note that this is a MESSY process! Students who are sensory averse/avoiders should note that you will likely have paint touching your hands and arms, even while wearing gloves.

Beginning Painting With Acrylics

Acrylic paint, the chosen medium for many amateur and professional artists, is versatile, nontoxic, easy to clean, and offers brilliant color. This class will introduce you to the fundamentals of painting with acrylics, how to lay out a picture, as well as mix and apply the paint to create your own painting in class.

Moms, bring your child and paint a stone mermaid alongside unique farm animals, including miniature horses, goats, emus, tortoises, and cows.

Screen Writing - The Basics

This course is designed to introduce participants to the basics of writing a screenplay. Students will learn to create a logline, develop characters, specifically the protagonist and antagonist and plot a story in a screenplay format. Participants may even achieve writing the first ten or fifteen pages, or the first act or a treatment. Take advantage of this new offering from the Hippodrome Education department!

The flute is another instrument used in sound therapy, for meditation, for relaxation, and simple enjoyment, especially in the Native American culture. There are many stories of how the flute came to be, which we will discuss. Students will learn the basics of playing the flute (breathing, techniques, fingering), legend of the flute, basics on how to make one and the parts of the flute, how to use the flute in meditation and how to play a basic song. Flutes are provided for class use to students who do not already have one.

Health and Wellness Walking Staff Self-Defense

Learn to use or manipulate a walking staff for exercise and self-defense. This coordinates many parts of the body. These movements are good for flexibility, blood flow, energy, brain exercise, coordination and breathing. The Japanese developed many techniques for self-defense over centuries of travel on foot throughout Japan. This can be practiced by students from the ages 13 to 80.

Island Hopping The Cedar Keys *

The Cedar Keys area of Florida’s Big Bend is a low, wet country where land merges gradually with the sea, shrinking and expanding with the ebb and flow of tides. Shore birds, dolphins, horseshoe crabs and a menagerie of plant and animal species make this a fascinating area to explore by kayak. The gentle current makes for easy paddling. Good for beginners and pros alike. Basic instructions given for beginners.

Special Interests Exploring Your Local Courts

If you like CourtTv, then you’ll like Exploring Your Local Court. If you have ever wondered if Judge Judy is remotely like real court, this is an opportunity for citizens to learn about their state court system through video clips, engaging demonstrations, lecture, and Q+A sessions. The goal of this class is to provide participants with a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of members of the judicial branch. Participants will hear from the Clerk of Court, Court Security, and local judges about their jobs and how each of these positions works together. Also, Circuit and County Court Judges will discuss what to expect in landlord/ tenant cases and small claims cases. We will take suggestions from participants on what you want to talk about for the 2nd session.

About the Instructor James graduated from UF in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and pursued post-baccaleaureate studies in astronomy at UF shortly thereafter. James has been the manager of the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium at Santa Fe College since October 2009 and has produced numerous planetarium shows. He is currently a co-host with Dean Regas of the internationally syndicated PBS show “Star Gazers”; the world’s only weekly program on naked-eye astronomy for the person on the street. James has also been given the opportunity to speak around the country regarding the challenges and opportunities for public interest in astronomy and astronomical outreach.

You may drop a class and receive a full refund by calling the Community Education office DURING THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION TERM for any class 2 weeks or longer in length. For shorter classes, you must drop the class at least 2 business days before the class begins to receive a refund. After that, you must fill out a petition for refund.
