KIRKPATRICK CENTER INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC SAFETY
KIRKPATRICK CENTER
Opened in 1995, the Kirkpatrick Center is located on 160 acres in Northeast Gainesville, near the Gainesville Regional Airport, about 11 miles from Santa Fe College’s Northwest Campus. Programs offered at the center accommodate the growing need for skilled personnel in emergency medical services, law enforcement and corrections professions in Florida and nationwide. The Kirkpatrick Center is home to the Santa Fe College Institute of Public Safety (IPS), which encompasses SF’s Emergency Medical Services degree program and certificate programs in Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic. IPS also offers basic recruit training in law enforcement and corrections, courses that lead to licensing and certification required for employment in public safety, and continuing education for sworn law enforcement and correctional officers. SF’s Criminal Justice Technology program also resides under the IPS umbrella, though courses for this program are offered at the Northwest Campus and online.
CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES DEFINED CERTIFICATE Certificate programs offer career and technical courses to prepare you for entry directly into employment. Certificates do not require 60 credit hours of college course work. However, students must meet specific basic skills requirements in English, mathematics, and writing. A certificate typically takes six months to two years to complete.
ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program is designed to get you ready for a career, but in some cases it may transfer to a bachelor’s program. A.S. programs are a good balance of general education coursework and hands-on training with the end goal of preparing you to enter the workforce with a competitive skill set. The A.S. degree typically takes two years to complete.
BACHELOR’S DEGREE A bachelor’s degree is the highest degree you can achieve in undergraduate education. Santa Fe College offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Applied Science
2
(B.A.S.) degrees in certain program areas. For most, a bachelor’s degree at SF is the next step after obtaining an A.A. or an A.S. degree. It allows students to continue to build skills and advance in a career field. A bachelor’s degree typically requires two additional years of classes after completing an A.A. or A.S. degree.

In this limited-access program, you will train hands-on in the classroom, laboratory settings, hospital emergency departments and ambulances. After successfully completing the program, you will be eligible to take the State of Florida and/or the National Registry exam to become a certified EMT. SF’s EMT program maintains a 95 percent passing rate on these exams.

As a paramedic, you will be part of an ambulatory response team and may work for a hospital, private organization or as part of a fire/rescue department or other organization. This limited-access program provides hands-on training in classes, laboratory settings, hospital emergency departments and ambulances. After successfully completing the program, you are eligible to take the State of Florida Paramedic and/or the National Registry Certification exams to become a licensed paramedic. LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CORRECTIONS BASIC RECRUIT TRAINING (LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER ACADEMY OR CORRECTIONAL OFFICER ACADEMY) The Law Enforcement Officer Basic Recruit Training Program and the Correctional Officer Basic Recruit Training Program prepare you for a career in law enforcement or corrections to protect the lives and property of your fellow citizens. As a law enforcement officer, you will patrol the community, investigate crimes and prepare cases for prosecution. As a correctional officer, you will oversee the custody of those who have been accused or convicted of crimes. These programs are two of the most comprehensive and innovative in the state and cover a broad range of academic and hands-on training that will qualify you to take the state licensure exam from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
PROGRAM LENGTH: Five to six months | AVERAGE SALARY: $62,960
BRIDGE COURSE The Criminal Justice Bridge Course allows Law Enforcement Officer Basic Recruit graduates to receive up to 24 credits toward the A.S. Degree in Criminal Justice Technology (AS 3702), and Correctional Officer Basic Recruit graduates can earn up to 12 credits. This course “bridges” the gap between blocks of instruction presented in the Basic Recruit training programs and academic courses on the same subjects that are offered in the Criminal Justice Technology degree program by requiring independent study, research, and writing components not including in the training programs. The Bridge Course is presented completely online, offering students the flexibility to further their education while still managing a job, family, or other obligations. Students engage in discussions, submit assignments, and participate in other course activities through the college’s electronic learning management system, known as Canvas.

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: OFFICER HAYLEY MILLER, GAINESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Officer Hayley Miller is an August 2017 graduate from Santa Fe College’s Institute of Public Safety. Officer Miller started working at the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) in February 2017 and was sponsored by the GPD to go through the program at SF. Officer Miller says that, unlike other first responders, there wasn’t any one event that drew her to a career in law enforcement. She said she was “excited by the idea of having a job where you’re doing something different every day, something that’s challenging, it’s fun, it’s exciting, you never know what’s around every corner.” She credits the training she received at IPS with preparing her for her job at GPD, where community policing is a priority. “We did a lot of scenario training and after each chapter, we worked on different scenarios. One of the most valuable lessons I learned there, other than officer safety was to treat and talk to everyone like you would want your mom, or your dad or your grandma to be talked to.” Officer Miller was a student at IPS during the construction of the new expanded facility. Although she was unable to attend the dedication of the building, she has visited since. She says that the facility will greatly help the students by providing state-of-the-art training that will prepare the students for what they encounter while working in law enforcement. Miller says she knows that Santa Fe College’s Institute of Public Safety provided her with the best training possible. She said the advantage of having instructors that work in law enforcement at area agencies, providing the training exercises, gives the program the credibility it needs to train quality, professional first responders.
