Career and Life Management Courses

SLS1101 COLLEGE SUCCESS (3 Credits) This course provides an opportunity for students to develop effective strategies and techniques to succeed in college. Topics include: goal setting, college and community resources, identifying and applying learning styles and study skills, time management, communication skills, information and financial literacy, emotional intelligence and an introduction to the college’s learning management system.

SLS1301 LIFE/CAREER DEVELOPMENT (3 Credits) This course is designed to help with the career decision-making process and equip a student with the necessary job search and employability skills. The student will explore career resources, diversity in the workforce, ethical concerns and organizational cultures. The student will also learn about job seeking techniques, resume writing, interviewing and networking. SLS1601 LIVING EFFECTIVELY (3 Credits) This course examines current issues relevant to living effectively in today’s society. This course provides a student with a broad base of information to enhance personal decision-making skills. Topics include self-awareness, goals and obstacles, selfesteem, positive thinking, self-discipline, selfmotivation, as well as managing your resources, communication and relationships.

Leadership Courses SLS1260 LEADERSHIP (2 Credits) In this course, the student will learn and apply the basic principles, practices and strategies of leadership.

SLS2352 CAREER DEVELOPMENT IN THE GLOBAL WORKPLACE (3 Credits) This course focuses on the theories, knowledge, skills and attitudes required to engage successfully in the global workplace. Emphasis will be placed on practical guidelines and strategies for navigating one’s career in an intercultural context, both in the United States and abroad. Topics will include organizational behavior, workplace relationships, multicultural communication and career management. The capstone of the course will be the development of an e-portfolio. Note: This course counts towards the International Studies Certificate.

SLS1269 PERSONAL LEADERSHIP (1 Credit) This course introduces the student to the fundamental definitions, qualities and skills of leadership. SLS2261 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT STUDY (3 Credits) This course is for a student seeking a more thorough, in-depth and reflective discussion about leadership and leadership theory. It includes an exploration of one’s leadership styles, personal leadership philosophy, and complex issues, such as conflict resolution, ethics in leadership and communication.
