The basis of true landscape sustainability lies in using local ecosystems as models for design. High plains prairies are a mosaic of native grasses and wildflowers that cover large swaths of land, stabilizing the soil and cooling the earth’s surface, providing forage and nesting places for wildlife. Prairies respond to ambient weather conditions— in dry summers they can be as brown and dormant as they are in winter, but in wet summers they can be lush and colorful resonating with life.
