series of cityscapes using a digital gouache effect with a digital brush, reminiscent of gouache techniques used by illustrators of the 1950s. He creates color by blending the iPad color wheel, choosing matte muted colors or vibrant colors, depending on the cityscape. Pete has worked in most traditional mediums from graphite to oil, from watercolor to linocuts. The digital iPad medium gives him the freedom to make major revisions which would normally be very difficult to do in a traditional medium without damaging the work. He is very excited and inspired to be working in the new frontier of digital art.

KRISTIN ACUÑA: BEGINNINGS October 10 – November 16, 2017 Reception: Wed., October 11, 4 - 6pm Kristin Acuña is a local artist who found painting later in life. She majored in Art History in college and loved to take photographs, but didn’t pick up a paintbrush until she was 41. Her love of Van Gogh is evident in her painterly Impressionism and saturated colors. Her appreciation and knowledge of a wide range of artists can be seen in the variety of subjects and styles across her work. Her ability to see the beauty and wonder in everyday scenes, imbues her works with hope and charm.

OUT OF THE SHADOWS: A COLLECTION OF TRANSFORMATIVE ART August 18 – October 5, 2017 Reception: Fri., August 18, 4 - 8pm The Sonoma County Mental Wellness Art Collaborative is hosting Out of the Shadows, an exhibit and opening night reception for members of Telecare Sonoma ACT, Buckelew Programs, and Community Support Network. Out of the Shadows will showcase the talent of visual artists and those who work in the performing arts. The mission of the Collaborative is to support the creative work of people the agencies serve, acknowledge their artistic contributions and foster an alliance between community-based mental health service providers. The Collaborative values the artistic impact that their members have within the community and recognizes that adversity can inspire creativity.

SHORT STORIES: A GROUP EXHIBITION September 12 – October 26, 2017 Reception: Thurs., September 14, 5-7pm For this exhibition, Sonoma County artists come together, presenting new works in a variety of media including painting, sculpture and assemblage. Often, art is a reflection of our perception of the environment, highlighted by our own past experiences. Sometimes our memories may omit the less ideal parts of the past and accent more perfect aspects, affecting our view of the present on many levels. Artists will investigate notions of times past, creating open narratives for viewer engagement, redefining familiar notions and questioning alleged realities. This exhibit will speak to the conviction that art making is a stage for retelling stories of our past, by providing ‘short stories’ to incorporate newly gained facts and experiences through the use of paints and found objects.

ARTISTS ROUND TABLE October 31 – December 7, 2017 Reception: Thurs., November 2, 5 - 7pm Since September 1953 Artists’ Round Table has welcomed artisans and fine artists of all media. This group of around 100 members has monthly meetings which offer demonstrations and participation by members to display their art. Many members take part in art shows and venues around Santa Rosa and display their work on the Artists’ Round Table website: artistsroundtable.club. The members of Artists’ Round Table proudly present works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, collage and multimedia as well as jewelry and paper creations. Artists’ Round Table welcomes you to the Finley Community Center show, which kicks off their 65th year!

JESSICA JACOBSEN: WOVEN August 29 – October 19, 2017 Reception: Friday, September 8, 5 - 7pm For Jessica, art is an outlet for her inner workings. Every drawing she has done in the last ten years has included birds. Those birds represent not only her soul’s desire to soar, but a voice inside that urges her to get out of her own way, be mindful, attentive and protective. There is a correlation between her latest work and what we’ve recently witnessed in North Dakota. Many are inspired by these uprisings because we know that when the quieted voices begin to shout, a true revolution has begun. It encourages everyone to speak their truth. The alternative is to let the birds die, which we cannot do.

MIXED MEDIA BY CECILY AXT AND JANE LANG December 12, 2017 – February 1, 2018 Reception: Thurs., December 14, 5 - 7pm This exhibit showcases a variety of abstract artwork by Jane Lang and Cecily Axt. Both are collage artists who share a love for color and texture, making their own paper by painting and printing, then arranging and layering the paper in collages. Jane also creates sculpture with wood and metal. Cecily creates fiber art which she mounts on canvas. They have been making art for over 30 years. This is an opportunity to see some of their more recent work in this multi-media exhibit.

studied in Egypt and Paris. He employs older more traditional methods of making his paints using raw materials. He also works in sculpture, printmaking, drawing and photography to find which medium will suit each finished piece. He often infuses his work with nostalgia. He feels that that which could normally condemn art to kitsch can be made instead to convey a deeper subtext of struggles and triumphs. His result is a multi-facetted view into personal yet approachable works of art.

MICA JENNINGS: VELVET FAUNA December 19, 2017 – February 8, 2018 Reception: Friday, January 12, 5 - 7pm Mica Jennings is a graphic and clothing designer by trade and a painter, illustrator and potter by chance. Mica’s fascination with domestic and wild animal life is shared by her teenaged son, but sadly, not by her cat, who will not allow any other animals in the house. The unsated longing for a vast animal acquaintance has led Mica to invoke their likenesses in this exposition, in lieu of knowing them personally. She hopes to impart some sense of the purity held in the hearts of all beasts through her work.

ENSEMBLE THEATER: THE NIGHT HOWLER MYSTERY (Age 7-13) 7 Dates

Help your child build skills in creativity, confidence, and cooperation by signing them up to be in a play! If your child enjoyed the movie Zootopia, they’ll love performing in this short comedy. In The Night Howler Mystery, a young detective, still wet behind the ears, struggles to save her community as its citizens mysteriously disappear into the night. When she teams up with a con artist fox, the pursuit heats up as they venture into the nocturnal world, where everything is not as it seems by light of day. Thematically this play could not be more timely. The humorous story uses adorable animal characters and the historic tension between predators and prey to remind us that stereotyping and fear-mongering are not acceptable in a modern world. The class ends with a short performance for family and friends. Min 10 Max 20 (Proctor Terrace Elementary) Min 10 Max 16 (Bennett Valley Center) Instructor: Staff of Santa Rosa Children’s Theater

Tiny Tots Theater: The Lorax (Age 4-6) 8 Dates Most children adore animals and love pretending to be animals or to care for them. In this session of Tiny Tots Theater, a special emphasis is put on acting out animal stories as we practice working together to bring a story to life in a creative drama format. Class will culminate in a short performance of ‘The Lorax’ on the last day for family and friends. Tiny Tots Theater is a fun way for young children to grow their skills in imagination, cooperation, sequential memory, courage, and physical coordination. Classes can fill up quickly so don’t delay and reserve a spot for your child today. Then come watch the story unfold! Costumes and sets provided. If your child is sick the first few days of class, they are encouraged to take the remaining days. • In the natural progression of children in swim lessons, it is not uncommon to expect your child to take and re-take a particular level before progressing to the next level. • To remedy supervision concerns, please do not send children too early for classes and please pick up children on time. • Persons will not be admitted to any fee program without being registered. • Register early as classes fill up quickly. • Save the registration receipt for presentation to the Swim Center Front Desk at the first class. •

Children registered for a class which they are not qualified for will be placed in the correct class only if there is a vacancy. If there is no vacancy, your money will be refunded. Please read the class descriptions carefully to ensure your child is enrolled in the correct class.

• If your child graduates to a higher level than you have them registered for, we will make every effort to accommodate a transfer, subject to availability. However, there may be instances where a refund is necessary.
