Four Good Reasons to Celebrate LIFE at Your Senior Center Have you checked out your local senior center lately? September is National Senior Center Month, a great time to plan a visit. Whether you are 50 or 90, there are many ways to celebrate LIFE (Learning, Independence, Friends, and Energy) at senior centers. Here are 4 good reasons to plan a visit: 1. Learning: Expand your knowledge It’s never too late to learn a new skill, and senior centers offer a wide range of stimulating educational activities to keep your mind sharp. Whether you’re taking an art class, participating in a literary club, learning to dance, or attending a computer training, there’s no lack of opportunities to stay engaged and pursue your passions.
3. Friends: Enjoy life Did you know that senior center participants have higher levels of social interaction and life satisfaction than their peers? Having great friends is one of life’s most wonderful rewards, and senior centers can be a perfect place to meet new people in your neighborhood. Today, nearly 11,000 senior centers serve 1 million older adults aged 50+ every day. 4. Energy: Discover health and vitality Keeping your mind and body active not only improves the way you feel—it also prevents many health problems that come with age. Senior centers have expanded their health and fitness offerings in recent years, holding traditional group fitness classes like Aerobics, Zumba, Yoga, and Tai Chi, as well as evidencebased health programs that have been scientifically proven to make people healthier.
2. Independence: Live on your terms By joining a senior center, you’ll be connected to programs and people that can give you the tools to choose your own course in life. You’ll find programs focused on remaining healthy, economically secure, and aging positively, as well as giving back to the community. You’ll meet resilient older adults who have “been there, done that” as they share life skills. Senior centers also offer a way to conveniently access multiple public services in one location. Now is the time to celebrate LIFE by taking full advantage of everything senior centers have to offer!

Let’s Celebrate Y-O-T-S! Year of the Senior by Diane Spain, AAA Advisory Council
Attitudes towards aging often blind us to the fact that millions of seniors are active, experienced, capable and talented. They want to continue to remain engaged, productive and active. Sonoma County is a leader in making healthy aging a priority. In January 2017, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved a plan that established 2017 as the Year of the Senior (YOTS). Developed as a collaborative effort by the Economic Development Board and the Human Services Department, it is a celebration of the economic and social contributions of residents age 60+. The plan includes working with the Age-Friendly Sonoma County initiative and increasing community understanding and support for the challenges that seniors face. It also explores the economic potential of a growing senior population and provides support for businesses, government and community organizations to expand opportunities for seniors.
Age-Friendly Sonoma County is recruiting volunteer “Age-Friendly Ambassadors” to help assess, plan and implement what can be done to make cities and communities throughout Sonoma County more livable for older adults. In 2016, Sonoma County was accepted into the World Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (the Global Network). Renee Tolliver with the Council on Aging serves as Sonoma County’s Age-Friendly Communities Coordinator. Renee facilitates a countywide volunteer steering committee and provides guidance to cities that want to join the Global Network and form their own task forces. Supported by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors and overseen by Aging Together Sonoma County, Age-Friendly Sonoma County is a five-year effort.
