COVID-19 Emergency

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency, many City services have been scaled back. This includes the temporary closure of both Senior Centers for daily activities. We’re waiting for allowances from the County Health Officer before senior programming returns. While we do not know when this may be, we are working to ensure that we can re-open our senior centers in the safest manner possible, as soon as permissible. Due to these unprecedented circumstances, all active Senior Memberships will be extended to make up for the lost use period. While the Senior Centers are closed, how about visiting our parks and pools for some outdoor summer enjoyment? You might even wear the performance socks we’re sending – though probably not while in the pool! Please enjoy this gift as our way of saying, “WE MISS YOU!”

Community Center News Senior Nutrition Program Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks has partnered with the Council on Aging Senior Nutrition Services to provide five-day frozen meal packets to seniors ages 60+! Meal packet pick up takes place Thursdays from 10:30am to 12:00, at the Steele Lane Community Center. These meals provide one third of the recommended dietary requirements for seniors and help contribute to a healthy lifestyle!
We’re Staying Connected! Many activity groups are staying connected online during Shelter in Place Orders. Some Senior Center instructors are sharing instructional videos on ZOOM. Although not the same as meeting at our Centers, Trisha Brown with our Photography group says, “I’m sure everyone is eager to get back together in person, but this is a fun alternative that keeps us connected to each other.”
Community businesses have also reached out to donate to seniors through the meal program by providing word search handout, hand sanitizer, activity books, flowers and more! A special thanks to Safeway, CVS, Allstate, Kaiser and others for their contributions!
Prior to Shelter in Place, the Finley Center had three teachers leading line dancing five days a week. Starting on May 14, one of those line dance teachers – Barbara Tobin – began offering free virtual line dance classes on Zoom. Each week she hosts around 20 dancers for an hour, reviewing dances learned earlier in the year and teaching new ones.
If you are interested in picking up a meal packet, please call the Council on Aging at (707) 525-0143 (ext 013) by no later than 10:00 a.m. of the Wednesday before that week’s pickup. We feel especially grateful Council on Aging has selected Steele Lane Community Center as a meal pick up site allowing us to be a part of this vital program during this difficult time.
Ellen Russell, another of the Finley Center line dance instructors, suggested that she and Barbara could host a free line dance “Social.” This two-hour event, held on June 26, brought together almost 30 dancers via Zoom. The first hour was devoted to individual check-ins, for friends to see each other and hear how everyone is faring. The second hour was spent dancing a dozen of their favorite dances. Also, Center staff have made several rounds of ‘Care Calls’ and email check-ins on our seniors and to provide updates on facility closure information. The calls were appreciated, and it was good to hear that most everyone is doing well. If you are interested in learning more about online activities, please give us a call at 707-543-3737. 2
