Recovery Underway Santa Rosa is a different community since we last wrote to you. The October 9th firestorm changed us in painful ways, but also brought us together. A neighbor who carried an elderly friend from a burning home, a Red Cross worker, a shelter volunteer...we are all now connected. While our Finley Community Center and Person Senior Wing provided respite for fire evacuees, many of our senior members became shelter volunteers helping those in need. And now, as we move through grief and on to recovery, we believe these new connections carry forth. We want to thank you for your support during this truly difficult time and to assure you that we are committed to Santa Rosa seniors, providing you with gathering places where you are welcome and programs to enjoy healthy living. Let the holiday spirit take you away with a Holiday Concert and A Christmas Carol reading performed by our very own Senior Center Members! Readers’ Theatre Thurs, December 7th, 12-12:45pm Bennett Valley Senior Center Thurs, December 14th, 3-4pm Person Senior Wing, Room 5

Tips for Managing the Holiday Blues By Laura Greenstein Many people can experience feelings of anxiety or depression during the holiday season. People who already live with a mental health condition should take extra care to tend to their overall health and wellness during this time. Extra stress, unrealistic expectations or even sentimental memories that accompany the season can be a catalyst for the holiday blues. Some can be at risk for feelings of loneliness, sadness, fatigue, tension and a sense of loss. A lot of seasonal factors can trigger the holiday blues such as, less sunlight, changes in your diet or routine, alcohol at parties, over-commercialization or the inability to be with friends or family. These are all factors that can seriously affect your mood.

1. Stick to normal routines as much as possible.

However, there are certain things you can do to help avoid the holiday blues. Ken Duckworth, M.D., NAMI’s medical director, shares advice for managing your health—both mental and physical —during the holiday season

9. Listen to music or find other ways to relax.

2. Get enough sleep. 3. Take time for yourself, but don’t isolate yourself. Spend time with supportive, caring people. 4. Eat and drink in moderation. Don’t drink alcohol if you are feeling down. 5. Get exercise – even if it’s only taking a short walk. 6. Make a to-do list. Keep things simple. 7. Set reasonable expectations and goals for holiday activities such as shopping, cooking, entertaining, attending parties or sending holiday cards. 8. Set a budget for holiday activities. Don’t overextend yourself financially in buying presents. Remember – The holiday blues are short-term. Be patient. Take things week by week or day by day.
