Vanessa is certified by the American Senior Fitness Assoc as a Group Fitness Leader and has taught exercise through SRJC’s Older Adults Program since 1999. Don’t become a statistic, learn how to avoid falls and stay safe!
Stretch & Bend
Thank you to Jeff and Suzette for their special Chicago Style Hot Dogs sale in October! We appreciate their help!
Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00am - 11:00am Room 19 - $3.00 class fee This class focuses on strength, flexibility, coordination and balance through exercise. Increasing blood flow to muscles can reduce sudden stress on different parts of the body. Much of the class is done on the floor with a chair nearby. A sedentary life style brings muscle atrophy, and a decline in independence, stability and mobility. Strength, agility and flexibility are traits which follow a good healthy sound body and mind. The objective of this class is to become more active, feel physically stronger and more confident. Carole Strode, instructor will have you stretch, bend and relax!

Patient Advocacy & Health Care System Changes
Everyone is welcome, men and women!

She will explain the role of a patient advocate in making medical & end of life decisions; and the importance of having a plan for care. Cheryl feels that patients should educate and empower themselves to take control of their health and learn to become their own best advocate.

In the Spotlight
Lillian Ballard “I did everything I ever dreamed of or wanted to do” said Lillian Ballard. And, I believe her! At age 17, Lillian wanted to see the world and began training with United Airlines to be a stewardess. This is where she heard Uncle Sam was looking for pilots. In 1944, Lillian joined a select group of young women… Women Air Force Service Pilots, or WASP, the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft. At age 18, Lillian completed a rigorous six-month training program in Arizona and immediately began flying B25’s filled with medical supplies for our troops. Her route was Los Angeles to London and back. An exciting, yet harrowing trip for Lillian and her co-pilot. After the war, Lillian returned to civilian life where she tried out and enjoyed many different careers. As a child of immigrants, she learned education was her ticket to financial independence. Her gift of languages (she knows seven) was an asset in her translating and transcribing position at the United Nations. She later learned court reporting and could type 255 words per minute. A career as a secretary in the Pentagon came next. A consistent thread running through Lillian’s life is that of a bright, independent woman. At the age of 28 she wanted to see Hawaii. She booked a berth and launched herself into the experience.
On that trip she had a shipboard romance with ship steward Charles Ballard whom she later married. Lillian and Charles spent 25 years at the Marine Cooks and Stewards Training School on Porter Creek Road in Santa Rosa where Charles was the Chief Steward Instructor. Lillian has two children in the area. She resides with her daughter, Diane Ballard. We look forward to seeing Lillian on Mondays, and Fridays for Bingo. She carries a special lightness and positive energy with her. Lillian says “I just send out love to everyone.” Historical Note: 25,000 women applied for the WASP program, 1,830 were accepted for training, and 1,074 graduated - a similar rate to men. Records of WASP were classified and sealed at the end of the war. Recognition finally came in 1977 when Congress declared that WASP were indeed veterans of World War II. Official military acceptance came from the Air Force in 1979.
Patience and Understanding will be required and appreciated as we go through some rehab work around the Center. Our back bathrooms, so desperately in need of upgrading, are scheduled for rehab to begin this month. Initially, it may get noisy as our workers will need to be jack-hammering. We know you’ll be happy with the final, brand-new, totally ADA accessible refurbished bathrooms, however, we have to go through some work to get there.
