Instructor Spotlight Introducing Tom McRann, Disc Golf Instructor Few people have the privilege of saying they held a Guinness World Record, but Tom McRann can say just that! From 1979-1989 Tom held the Guinness World Record for: “the longest throw of any object in the history of man.” Tom is an avid disc golf player and was responsible for Frisbee growth as a sport and recreation in the Far Western U.S. His many Frisbee educational programs evolved into a teaching specialist position at Stanford University offering PE units to students. Sports marketing success led to a Corporate Sports Marketing position and eventually an Associate Athletic Director position at San Jose State University. World records and a World Class pro
athlete, Tom was one of the original pro Frisbee players competing in World Frisbee and World Flying Disc Championships. What is disc golf? As the Professional Disc Golf Association describes it, “Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s, and like “ball golf” the object is to complete each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the ‘hole.’ The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets.”
Tom McRann Tom wants to continue creating Frisbee athletes one person at a time. If you want to learn more, you can contact Tom at (707) 591-3044 or register for “Learn to Play Frisbee Golf” a 4-week course meeting Tues and Thurs 9-11am beginning March 3, 2015 at the Person Senior Wing. Pre-register #76088 $39 Residents ($49 non-residents).

Did You Know? Tips For Safe Winter Driving AARP recommends the following to keep you safe on the road in winter weather: 1. Winterize your vehicle to make sure your brakes, wipers, defroster, headlights and heater are all working properly. 2. Stop gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake. 3. Turn on your headlights to increase your visibility to other motorists, and keep your lights clean and free of ice or debris. 4. In unfavorable driving conditions, reduce your speed and increase the distance between your car and the one in front of you. Remember that it takes more time to stop on icy roads.
5. Stay alert. Look ahead to give yourself more time to react safely to situations without suddenly braking or skidding. 6. Before driving, clear snow and ice from your vehicle’s hood, windows and roof. 7. Use snow or all-season tires or chains for better traction and smoother slowing. 8. Take extra precautions on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas, which can freeze first and remain icy longer than roadways do. A road on which ice and snow are completely frozen is pretty slippery, even though it provides more traction than a road with melting ice.

9. In wet driving conditions avoid driving faster than the windshield wipers can clear water from the windshield. Make sure your wiper blades are in good shape and replace them yearly. 10. Equip your car with emergency supplies, such as a blanket, food, water, spare fuses, a flashlight with batteries, an ice scraper, flares and a first-aid kit. Learn more from AARP about safe driving by registering for an AARP Drivers Safety Course at the Person Senior Wing. Upcoming courses available: Renewal Course Jan 8 9:30-2:00 #72596, Full Course Feb 17 & 19 9:30-1:30 #72597. Call (707) 543-3745 to register.
