Instructor Spotlight Line Dancing with David Hamley Line dancing is a great way to stay healthy and make new friends all while having fun. At Bennett Valley Senior Center, David has been teaching Line Dancing for nine years. Before that he umpired for softball for many years. He first got interested in line dancing through hanging out at Kodiak Jack’s which used to be located in Petaluma. He now enjoys dancing with his wife and friends around Sonoma County. The main enjoyment of line dancing for David is the variety of music and his overall love of dancing. David looks forward to teaching all participants line dance moves on Wednesdays 11:00 - 12:30pm at Bennett Valley Senior Center.

Health & Fitness Corner Dancing is Heart Healthy Dancing is a unique form of exercise that provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while allowing you to engage in a social activity. Dancing, especially line dancing, not only works out your body but also your mind. The combination of having to focus on the steps along with the timing of the dance creates a wonderful brain stimulation. A 21-year-old study published in the New York Journal of Medicine found dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. In the study, participants over the age of 75 who engaged in reading, dancing, and board games once a week had a 7 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who did not. Those who
engaged in these activities at least 11 days a month had a 63 percent lower risk. Dancing also helps to improve balance, posture, bone density and cardiovascular and muscular strength as well as flexibility. Come join one of our many dance classes where you will be immersed in a great environment and gain confidence while having fun and meeting new friends.
