Instructor Spotlight Frisbee Golf with Tom McRann Every Thursday morning Tom unloads his truck full of the equipment needed to play Frisbee golf. Always smiling, he sets up the course for an hour of fun on the Finley park lawn next to the Person Senior wing. At a recent disc golf class, Tom McRann coached a handful of women on how to “drive” with an Aerobie ring, then “putt” into the disc golf basket with a solid sport disc. “Nice and tight. Just look at that basket … it’s all in the wrist,” Tom advised.
Tom, one of the first professional players of Frisbee and holder of a 1979 Guinness World Records for the longest throw of any object in the history of man, now spends his time helping others ap-preciate the sport of Frisbee golf. His goal, keeping seniors like himself active, riding the wave of the Frisbee into the future. Tom invites everyone to come join his class to learn the game he is so passionate about. Frisbee Golf $4.00 drop-in; Thursday 10-11am in Finley Park on large field next to Person Senior Wing.

Health & Fitness Corner Staying Healthy in Fall Fall is here and that means colder weather and the flu. The seasonal influenza or flu is a contagious disease that causes congestion and inflammation of the nose, throat and lungs. Flu vaccinations are important to preventing the flu, especially for those at high risk. Washing hands regularly, having checkups with an internal medicine doctor as soon as symptoms show and avoiding
others that are already sick are excellent ways for seniors to reduce their chances of catching the flu. Dressing warmly during chilly days can also help protect the immune system and reduce chances of catching the flu. Flu Shot Clinic at Bennett Valley Senior Center

Did You Know? Oktoberfest Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair). Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. Locally, it is often called the Wiesn, after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modelled after the original Munich event. The festival is held in an area named the Theresienwiese, often called the Wiesn for short, located near Munich’s center. During the event, large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed: during the 16-day festival in 2013, for example, 7.7 million liters or 2.2 million gallons were served. Visitors also enjoy numerous attractions, such as amusement rides,
side stalls and games. here is also a wide variety of traditional foods including Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezen (pretzels), Knödel (potato or bread dumplings), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkohl/Blaukraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda (a spicy cheese-butter spread) and Weißwurst (a white sausage). www.muenchen.de/int/en/events/oktoberfest/ history.html Come celebrate our very own Oktoberfest here at the Finley Courtyard complete with a BBQ lunch, beirgarten, and lovely music from our ballroom dance.
