Instructor Spotlight Introducing Dr. Carl Hendel, Tai Chi Instructor Carl Hendel, M.D. has practiced Tai Chi for 27 years. He began teaching Tai Chi at the Bennett Valley Senior Center nearly 20 years ago. Dr. Carl’s medical background was as a western medical specialist (anesthesiology), but health challenges in his early forties required that he change his life. Tai Chi was an important part of that change. His medical life shifted to Integrative Medicine, utilizing structure/ function relationships and Chinese Medicine as key parts of his work. This knowledge adds a level to his Tai Chi instruction not commonly found.
But what is Tai Chi? Tai Chi is a series of movements guided by sound physiologic principles. As Dr. Carl explains, “For 300 years we have continued to separate our bodies from our minds. In my Carl Hendel, M.D. opinion, this “tear” in the fabric of humanity is responsible for many Give it a try! Did You Know? Change for Kids—Get involved! Did you know as a Santa Rosa resident, you have the opportunity to help change the lives of youth in our community? The “Change for Kids” program offers you an easy way to assist in raising funds for more free or reduced-fee afterschool programs. City of Santa Rosa Utility customers, including businesses, are encouraged to “round up” their monthly utility bill (water & sewer) payment to the nearest dollar with the extra “change” going into an after school fund for
kids in areas of Santa Rosa where services are most needed. If 10,000 households gave $3.00 per year, we could provide an additional after school program for 100 children. If every business gave a fixed amount of $5.00 per month, several additional programs serving 200 children per year could be provided! What a difference this could make in our community. Please help the Recreation and Parks Department by enrolling your business and/or your household in the program. 5
To get your utility bill account enrolled in the program, simply visit http://srcity.org/changeforkids to sign up online – it just takes a minute! Thank you for your assistance in helping our youth.
