Instructor Spotlight Introducing Berenice Iriks, Watercolor Instructor Berenice Iriks has a passion for painting, especially in watercolor. She is attracted to watercolor because of “the beautiful transparency and fluidity of the medium.” Although she has drawn and painted her whole life, she began a serious study of art at the Santa Rosa Junior College as an adult, and her skills and enthusiasm blossomed. She was thrilled to become an adjunct faculty member at the same SRJC, to teach watercolor classes. As an art teacher Berenice is particularly interested in helping students develop their knowledge, skills and confidence. Each student is

encouraged to develop their own manner of painting. Berenice is known for her patience and her cheerful attitude. In her classes, you can study the basic techniques or enjoy a more advanced exploration of painting in watercolor. Join Berenice at the Person Senior Wing for one of her upcoming Watercolor classes. All classes run by the month & require pre-registration. Wed, 1:30-4:30pm or Thurs 1:304:30p. Class fees vary, call center for details.

Health & Fitness Corner Games are Good for the Brain

We all know that exercise is good for our bodies: we stretch, bend and sweat to keep our muscles, heart and lungs healthy. But, we often forget to exercise our brains. Scientists believe that exercising our brains can create a ‘cognitive reserve’ that will help us stay sharp as we age. Additionally, exercising our brains can have a variety of positive effects including improved memory, attention and alertness – all the more reason to engage our minds, meet new people and have fun. We suggest you try out one of these new card games at the Person Senior Wing:

Learn to Play Cribbage for Beginners Cribbage is a unique card game. The object of the game is to score the most points by making card combinations of 15 using pairs, runs and flushes. (4 weeks) Wed, 11/6-11/27, 1-2pm, Person Senior Wing. Pre-Register, $8 #68853 Learn to Play Pedro Pedro is a card game played with four players divided into partners that uses a standard deck of cards. Drop-in Hand and Foot Come play a fun, challenging and easy to learn card game. We will play as well as teach those who are not familiar with the game. Each player is dealt two hands of cards – the hand, which is played first and the foot, which is played second. The object is to play all of your cards by melding them. Bring your card skill and a little luck to the table! Begins Mon, 9/16, 10am-2pm, Person Senior Wing, $2.

History In Our Midst A closer look at the beautiful DeTurk Round Barn The DeTurk Round Barn, located in the historic West End Neighborhood, is one of the last examples of its type of architecture in California and quite probably in the western United States. A total of three polygonal/round barns are located in Sonoma County, but only the DeTurk Round Barn is truly round. It is included in the National and California Register of Historic Places and is the only structure under public ownership and open to the public. The barn was originally built in 1891 for Isaac DeTurk’s prize winning trotting horses, including Anteeo, a prize winning stallion. Isaac DeTurk was a vineyard owner and one of the first winery owners in Sonoma County. He owned a 140-acre Yulupa Ranch in Bennett Valley and 1,200 acres of

Los Guilicos Rancho east of Kenwood, California. His largest winery was located in the red building across from the DeTurk Round Barn and was equipped with 640,000 gallons of cooperage and had a storage capacity of a million gallons. In 2007, the City of Santa Rosa received funds from the California Cultural and Historic Endowment to renovate, restore and stabilize the interior of DeTurk Round Barn. The renovation restored the structure’s original beauty while adding modern touches to bring it in to the current century. The DeTurk Round Barn now includes 7,500 square feet of open banquet and meeting space, elevator access to the second floor mezzanine, a catering kitchen, a 24-foot-diameter ceiling fan, radiant floor heating, a

DeTurk Round Barn high-tech audio-visual system, unique lighting and flat-screen televisions, and a sound system. This local treasure is not only a historic site, but also an active event center perfect for family reunions, holiday parties, and other special occasions. For more information about renting DeTurk Round Barn, please visit www.srcity. org/deturkroundbarn or email rentdeturkroundbarn@srcity.org.

Did You Know? Medical Equipment Recycling in Santa Rosa The Sonoma County Section on Aging’s Medical Equipment Recycling program was developed to keep useful medical equipment circulating and in-use throughout Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. The successful program has kept thousands of dollars’ worth of medical supplies out of the county landfills and provided necessary medical equipment to those in need. There is a great variety of items available including wheelchairs, commodes, walkers, hospital beds, disposable briefs and other medical supplies.

If you have any medical equipment or supplies, that are no longer needed, simply drop them off at the recycling center (address below). Please only bring gently used items, as the center does not have the ability to repair donations. Your donation efforts will have a two-fold benefit – keeping these items out of the landfill and, moreover, helping someone in need. If you are in-need of medical equipment for yourself or a loved-one, all products at the recycling center are available FREE. New items arrive daily, so it’s worth the trip to check out their inventory.

5

Medical Equipment Recycling Be a part of this inspiring program which helps tackle health care needs, make lives better and protects the environment. The program is located at Careful Moving & Storage, 812 Donahue Street in Santa Rosa. The room is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. For more information on medical equipment recycling, contact Yvonne Baginski, Vice President of Section on Aging at (707) 226-7127.
