I

am happy to note that the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India is launching a Catalogue titled 'VIRASAT - The Wealth of Heritage' to showcase the strength of our rich cultural heritage in the realm of Handicrafts and Handlooms on the occasion of the Hastkala Conclave, being held on 17th August, 2012 at New Delhi. Hastkala Conclave is a pioneering initiative of the Ministry of Textiles aimed at creation of awareness on the versatility of India's craft & loom repertoire amongst corporate and industrial houses of India and through them to their counterparts the world over. Indian Handicrafts & Handloom would benefit from the involvement of our corporate and industrial houses for inputs and innovation in motives, designs and techniques so as to strike a balance between traditional ethnic concepts and contemporary consumer preferences. The Ministry of Textiles envisages creation of a stimulating environment that would support and promote both Handlooms and Handicrafts Sector and empower them at the grass root level.

Our endeavor is to preserve, protect and promote India's cultural legacy through a tripartite collaboration between the Government, Industry and the artisans, craftpersons and weavers to expose them to the world of corporate consumers so that sustained marketing linkages can be established for their products. I am confident the effort would lead to enhanced sourcing of gifts and souvenirs from India's varied & diverse craft & loom repository. I also hope it will generate interest in adoption of craft clusters by our private sector. I complement the Ministry of Textiles, Industry Associations and Corporate Houses for coming together under the common platform provided by the Conclave to deliberate on taking this initiative forward.

Its time of Ethnic products Kani Shawl Kani is a highly traditional languishing product of Kashmir. The colour specifications of designs are translated from a coded language called Talim written in local script. A person recites the talim and the weavers

on the loom insert weft yarn from the small wooden 'tillis' spools.

Home furnishing The printers, majority of whom are women, in‐ telligently use mud or wax or oil or resin to print in a particular fashion with the help of wooden blocks to conceal some of the portion of the cloth, which does not require a particular colour while dyeing. The whole cycle of process right from washing, mordanting, printing, dyeing, fin‐ ishing etc may take 15 days to develop the printed fabric.

Ikat Sari: The production process involves drawing the design outlines on a graph paper and then putting tiny knots in the warp and weft yarns separately, following the design so prepared. At first, the yarn is dipped into the lightest colour to be used. Now portions which are to retain this light shade are tied, after which the yarn is again dipped in deeper shades. Repeating the process 2 to 5 times, finally the threads which are used for tying are removed and the dyed

132

warp and weft yarns are ready to be put on the loom for weaving. Equally skilful is the weaving process when the weaver has to match and follow the individual warp and weft yarns to interlace to form the ultimate design in the fabric.

Silk Brocade Sari Brocade - A compound texture heavily ornamented with many colours of silk yarns and zari threads with raised patterns all over. So complex is the brocade handloom involving 5-8 healds, jala, jacquard, generally operated by the Julahas of Benaras with the help of one assistant, that even one meter of fabric cannot be woven in a day.

Handloom 3_Layout 1 8/8/2012 11:07 PM Page 5

Jamdani Sari Weaving designs and motifs in a fabric without the help of any device. The weaver himself creates the design instantly, following the patterns available in the nature like flower, creeper, leaf etc. during weaving. Literally, he counts the warp thread with his fingers and then he passes the weft yarn through this opening to form the design as per his imagination. Depending on the intricacy of the design, he may have to do this more than 100 times for creating one line of weft thread. It may take months together or even a year to weave a sari. So high is the craftsmanship involved.

Only women are allowed to weave The loom is a group of bamboo sticks and can be rolled into a bundle when not in use. The weaver spreads it as a sheet in the open, puts her own weight to tighten the warp which is tied around her waist. This Loin loom is suitable for the densest texture of the fabric, which is not possible on any other kind of loom
