Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Referring to himself as a "consulting detective" in the stories, Holmes is known for his proficiency with observation, deduction, forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the fantastic, which he employs when investigating cases for a wide variety of clients, including Scotland Yard.

First appearing in print in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, the character's popularity became widespread with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891; additional tales appeared from then until 1927, eventually totalling four novels and 56 short stories. All but one are set in the Victorian or Edwardian eras, between about 1880 and 1914. Most are narrated by the character of Holmes's friend and biographer Dr. John H. Watson, who usually accompanies Holmes during his investigations and often shares quarters with him at the address of 221B Baker Street, London, where many of the stories begin.

Watson describes Holmes as "bohemian" in his habits and lifestyle. Said to have a "cat-like" love of personal cleanliness, at the same time Holmes is an eccentric with no regard for contemporary standards of tidiness or good order. While Holmes can be dispassionate and cold, during an investigation he is animated and excitable. He has a flair for showmanship, often keeping his methods and evidence hidden until the last possible moment so as to impress observers.

The detective goes without food at times of intense intellectual activity, believing that "the faculties become refined when you starve them." At times Holmes relaxes with music, either playing the violin, or enjoying the works of composers such as Wagner and Pablo de Sarasate. Holmes occasionally uses addictive drugs, especially in the absence of stimulating cases. As a physician, Watson strongly disapproves of his friend's cocaine habit, concerned about its effect on Holmes's mental health and intellect. Watson and Holmes both use tobacco, smoking cigarettes, cigars, and pipes.

Though not the first fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the best known. By the 1990s there were already over 25,000 stage adaptations, films, television productions and publications featuring the detective, and Guinness World Records lists him as the most portrayed literary human character in film and television history.

FAME AND ADAPTATIONS Movie

Holmes's popularity and fame are such that many have believed him to be not a fictional character but a real individual; numerous literary and fan societies have been founded on this pretense. Avid readers of the Holmes stories helped create the modern practice of fandom. The character and stories have had a profound and lasting effect on mystery writing and popular culture as a whole, with the original tales as well as thousands written by authors other than Conan Doyle being adapted into stage and radio plays, television, films, video games, and other media for over one hundred years. SIDE CHARACTERS

Dr John H. Watson is a medical doctor, formerly in the British Army. He was married to Mary Watson and is arguably the only friend and confidant of Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle portrays Watson as a capable and brave individual, whom Holmes does not hesitate to call upon for both moral and physical assistance.

SIDE CHARACTERS

Inspector G. Lestrade is a Scotland Yard detective. Lestrade was skilled enough as an investigator to reach the rank of Inspector on his own, and recognise when he was out of his depth. Holmes later came to call him "the best of the professionals" appreciating the man's tenacity in following any lead the amateur would give.

SIDE CHARACTERS

Mycroft Holmes is the older brother of Sherlock Holmes. He possesses even greater powers of observation and deduction compared to his younger brother; however, he lacks the energy and inclination to use them in the same way as his brother. Mycroft occupied an unspecified role in the British government.

SIDE CHARACTERS

Professor James Moriarty, the archenemy of Holmes, a mathematics professor turned master criminal. His genius is acknowledged by even Holmes himself to be on par with him. Holmes describes Moriarty as the 'Napoleon of crime'. Moriarty has been proven to be the most dangerous of all criminals that Holmes has ever encountered.

SIDE CHARACTERS

Irene Adler is a retired American opera singer and actress who appears in "A Scandal in Bohemia". Although this is her only appearance, she is one of only a handful of people who best Holmes in a battle of wits, and the only woman. Her memory is kept alive by the photograph of Adler that Holmes received for his part in the case.

SIDE CHARACTERS

Mary Watson (née Morstan) was the wife of Dr John Watson. She is first introduced in The Sign of Four and Watson refers to her in a number of the stories. While she is generally not involved in the main action of most stories, she is a central character in The Sign of Four.

TIME PERIOD

Not only was Sherlock based on a real person, but he was created during the era of Victorian England, and the story takes place in the same time period. Naturally, this allows the bizarre detective to give us a peek into what it was like to be a person (or detective) in London in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The Sherlock Holmes Museum The Sherlock Holmes Museum is a privately run museum in London, England, dedicated to the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It is the world's first museum dedicated to the literary character Sherlock Holmes. It opened in 1990 and is situated in Baker Street, bearing the number 221B by permission of the City of Westminster.

Pastiches

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote limited number of Sherlock holmes tales. But over the course of time, many writers have written their own stories based on Holmes. Many comics and novels have emerged to be very interesting to read.
