We work hard to build strong relationships with our clientele and take an active, hands-on approach with their horses. We recommend the finest nutritional solutions for racehorses, with an accessible and very personal level of customer service, so that our clients can feed with confidence. Saracen produce nutritionally sound, innovative rations within our range of specialist thoroughbred feeds, which have been developed through an exclusive manufacturing partnership with Hallway Feeds, based in Lexington, Kentucky, since April 2000. These feeds boast an impressive and proven record with consistently strong results on racecourses in the UK, Europe, the United States and throughout the world. Like Hallway Feeds, Saracen Horse Feeds is a Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Brand Partner. KER is the most prolific independent equine research centre in the world, entirely committed to the advancement of athletic performance through nutrition. They are World Leaders in equine nutrition and physiology, and the global authority in applying sports science to the feed industry, with research centres in Lexington, Kentucky and in Ocala, Florida.

Saracen is the exclusive KER Brand Partner in the UK, joining an international network of horse feed manufacturers devoted to the advancement of equine nutrition. KER provides us with a comprehensive consultation programme tailored to fit our individual needs, and the scientific knowledge, technology and credibility necessary for us to produce competitive, cutting-edge feeds at our own feed mill for UK, European and international trainers. Their nutritionists work with feed companies like us on six continents to formulate top-quality feeds that complement typical local forages. KER operates two facilities, each one bringing research to life; both are dedicated to advancing our knowledge of equine nutrition and how this can enhance the performance and health of horses. The primary facility is based in Kentucky with 25 - 30 trained research horses and a full laboratory and metabolism barn. This is complemented with a dedicated Thoroughbred training centre in Florida with another 20 horses, which enables their researchers to observe the influence of nutritional changes in active racehorses in a typical training situation. The Ocala facility is a ‘world first’, using a 6-furlong track to measure and monitor racehorses in a real racing stable environment under racing conditions. This unique alliance of like-minded companies now gives the European thoroughbred industry direct access to the most up-to-date products, the very latest technology, and a record of unmatched success. Because of our close links, we can make these resources available in both the recommendations we make and in the way our feed is formulated. This collaboration has given Saracen the chance to consistently provide nutritional solutions with unique, progressive feeds that can make a real difference, along with the science to support them. Together, we have identified nutritional factors that can optimise performance and recovery trends and help trainers to choose the best feeding strategies.

APPLICATION OF THE FEEDS IN THE RACING PROGRAMME

“RESEARCH SEPARATES THE INNOVATOR FROM THE IMITATOR” JOE D. PAGAN, Ph D. President of Kentucky Equine Research

Our range of specialist racing feeds contain a novel and superior source of calcium shown to be more highly digestible than other forms of the mineral, including calcium carbonate. This source can maximise bone density, and subsequent skeletal strength and maintenance. The ingredients called BMC™ (Buffered Mineral Complex) are research proven to support digestive health and hindgut stability by maintaining the correct pH for optimal efficiency of the gastrointestinal tract.

BMC™ also has a significant effect on the buffering capacity of the stomach and hindgut. Several key minerals that are highly digestible in BMC™ (particularly calcium, magnesium, boron, silicone, iodine, zinc, and manganese) have a slow release mechanism and as they are bioavailable, the body can absorb them much more easily. In an acid environment, this material breaks down slowly so it can neutralise meaningful amounts of excess acid over a longer period of time. After 6-8 hours at pH 5.5, 100% of calcium and 98.66% of magnesium has been released.

Recent research studies conducted by Kentucky Equine Research (KER) have demonstrated the positive effects that BMC™ has on bone turnover and density. Bone development is a necessary process to maintain a healthy skeleton as this increases the opportunity to repair damaged bone before a clinical problem occurs. The original research using Triacton®, a supplement including BMC™, has demonstrated efficacy in increasing bone density in Thoroughbred racehorses. Saracen racing feeds contain the same levels of nutrients.

Alternative energy sources, such as fat and fermentable fibre, have been used to reduce the reliance on starch and sugars, and to allow horses that are susceptible to tying-up to remain in training.

Re-Spond Cubes have been developed to support horses in training with specific needs that require starch regulation and additional nutritional support. Horses that suffer from tying-up or gastric ulcers benefit from a combination of lower starch, higher oil and increased fermentable fibre feeding.

DESIGNED FOR:

SARACEN RE-VIVE MASH DESIGNED FOR:

• Use after a piece of work or after racing • Horses recovering from illness or injury, or any horse on box-rest • During travelling • Times of stress, where appetite is reduced (banana flavoured) • Encouraging fluid intake Re-Vive Mash is a fully fortified, correctly balanced, highly appetising mash designed to maintain appetite, and to support rehydration and recovery rates. For horses on box rest, the mash can be used as part of their daily feeding programme to provide additional 'super-fibres' or to mask medication.

DESIGNED FOR:

Racing Prep 14 Racing Prep 14 is a multi-purpose sweetfeed containing added fat and beet pulp, which provides extremely palatable calories for all horses in training. They can run on the feed, or it can be used in between races for horses normally fed on Race 13 to improve recovery rates. It will add weight and condition to any horse and is extremely suitable for the pre-race conditioning of backward types (Flat two-year-olds and NH three/ four-year-olds who still need to develop and fill their frames). It works particularly well on the taller, larger framed, longer backed type of horse that can often have issues holding their weight and topline through the season. It means that they have enough energy for their training and to still increase their bodyweight and condition. It is especially effective for middle-and-long distance horses. Specifically formulated to be a versatile conditioning feed, Racing Prep 14 produces a dense ‘boost’ in energy, up to 20% more than conventional racing feeds. Premium quality grains are blended with sugar beet pulp and soya oil, then fortified using Saracen’s Stamm 30 supplement for nutrient continuity. The feed is ideal for pre-race conditioning, for racehorses under stress, or for any horse with a poor appetite that is experiencing digestive difficulties.

Internationally available, High Energy – High Performance Nutrition

Race 13 is a high energy sweetfeed, formulated to maintain the equine athlete during the rigours of a strenuous racing campaign. It is designed for horses in full work, and racing. It will ‘harden’ a horse in training and maintain racefit condition. It is particularly effective for sprinters and flatbred hurdlers. It works especially well on horses with a more compact body type. Race 13 is essentially formulated to make the best use of the horse’s natural athletic ability. The feed is designed to maintain a competitive edge by using a variety of different energy sources to match a racehorse’s energy requirements. These come in the form of fat, carbohydrate and ‘super-fibres’, to allow the muscle a mixture of energy sources to draw from. It contains a highly palatable blend of cereal grains, sugar beet pulp and soya oil, and is fortified with Saracen’s Stamm 30 supplement for nutrient continuity.

Racefit Cubes Racefit Cubes offer alternative energy sources within a higher fermentable fibre, lower starch formulation to give an energy efficient ration in a concentrated, pelleted form. This ration provides long lasting energy release and controlled performance for horses in full training in a highly palatable and convenient cube, with quality proteins and high levels of supporting vitamins and minerals. This diet works very well for horses that are intolerant to high starch diets by providing a balance of energy sources to support them, rather than relying totally on a high cereal inclusion. Soya hulls and beet pulp offer highly digestible forms of ‘super-fibres’, which have the ability to produce high levels of supplemental energy and are essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system and supporting gastric health. Soya oil, an extremely useful source of calories for the racehorse, brings extra nutrient density, reducing the proportion of energy derived from starch.

Racefit Cubes can be helpful for fussy feeders with reduced appetites, when dietary energy can be the limiting factor in sustaining a predictable performance.

Recoup 11™ & Recoup Cubes Recoup 11, a highly palatable sweetfeed, and Recoup Cubes, in a more concentrated pelleted form, are both suitable for horses in the early stages of pretraining and fittening work. They are also designed for supporting horses on box-rest, or in light work following an injury, or a break from training. The oil levels and highly digestible fibres, such as soya hulls, alfalfa and sugar beet pulp, will maintain appropriate body condition while horses are on the ‘easy list’, and keep them manageable. The feeds are fully fortified with racing levels of vitamins and minerals for nutrient continuity as work levels increase. Using Recoup 11 or Recoup Cubes during convalescence or light exercise makes for a smooth transition between the higher energy racing feeds within the Saracen range, as their nutrient levels and ingredients are very compatible. It is suitable for feeding to yearlings as they are being broken in to maintain an even temperament before upgrading the energy levels in their diet.

Re-Leve

It is particularly effective for horses of a nervous disposition, where there is a mental tension and a nervous component that affects anxiety levels – this feed helps to keep them calm and relaxed and gives them more focus in their training. It is helpful in the management of gastric ulcers as the blend of ingredients is more forgiving for gut health and comfort.

AV

CU Re-Leve is fortified with Saracen's RRANT FL Stamm 30 supplement for nutrient continuity and contains high levels of antioxidants, such as natural Vitamin E and selenium, to assist normal muscle function.

K

As a result, a high fat, low starch and sugar formulation was developed for horses to train and run on. It provides the equine athlete with the high levels of energy that it requires for performance using a variety of preferred energy sources. Research has shown that when horses predisposed to tying-up were fed Re-Leve, they demonstrated less post-exercise muscle damage than horses fed on conventional racing diets. So it allows those horses that are susceptible to this problem to remain in training and to cope with their workload.

BL AC

Re-Leve is a vet-recommended high performance mix, specially designed to replace all cereal and hard feed to support horses with gastric health and tying-up issues. Collaborative research carried out between Dr Stephanie Valberg at the University of Minnesota and Kentucky Equine Research showed that, in a stressful training situation, diets that are composed largely of cereals and molasses can increase the occurrence of ERS.

OUR

®

It is recommended that 0.5 – 1 kg of Equi-Jewel rice bran supplement is fed daily alongside Re-Leve to boost energy levels – this palatable supplement is naturally high in oil and fibre, but low in starch, so it is a very compatible product.

Re-Spond Cubes Re-Spond Cubes have been developed to support horses in training with specific needs that require starch regulation and additional nutritional support. Horses that suffer from tying-up or gastric ulcers benefit from a combination of lower starch, higher oil and increased fibre feeding. Re-Spond Cubes provide the energy needed for racing in a balance that supports the needs of horses prone to tying-up or with gastric ulcers. In addition to providing the right balance of energy and provision of quality protein sources, Re-Spond Cubes provide both natural and synthetic sources of Vitamin E in combination with Vitamin C to enhance antioxidant defence of muscle cells benefiting performance and recovery. As inflammation is common in response to the stresses of training and the individual's susceptibility to muscle damage, Re-Spond provides omega-3 fatty acids to assist with regulation of inflammation.

Re-Spond Cubes provide the energy needed for training and racing in a balanced profile of lower starch, higher fibre and higher oil values. For horses that need additional nutritional support, this feed continues to condition them appropriately alongside meeting the demands of their regular work programme.

Luminance

CONDITIONING SUPPLEMENT

Luminance is the ‘next generation’ in equine conditioning supplements. It is a fortified conditioning supplement that is part rice bran, part milled linseed, providing a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Designed to add energy to the ration, Luminance is a pelleted supplement that will also provide some supplemental vitamins and minerals. The oil levels are high (24%), so the energy density of the product can be used to good effect when fed strategically to achieve optimum condition. Using Luminance is an easy and palatable way of adding calories to the diet of any horse needing condition, but the combination of stabilised rice bran and milled linseed gives an extra dimension in how quickly they respond. Linseed is the richest vegetable source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Increasing dietary levels of Omega-3 fatty acids can have extremely beneficial effects on a working horse.

FEEDING DIRECTIONS Luminance may be fed alone or mixed with feed depending on the intensity of physical activity, size and body condition of the horse. Measuring cups are available - please contact us. TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS • Maintenance 0.45 kg per day • In full training Light to Moderate Work: 0.45 - 0.9 kg per day Intense Work: 0.9 - 1.3 kg per day Luminance™

Equi-Jewel®

RICE BRAN SUPPLEMENT

Equi-Jewel is a pelleted high oil rice bran supplement, designed to increase the energy density (calories) of a ration. It can be added to boost calorie intake, or to replace part of the ration to reduce concentrate consumption, so can be a good way to encourage picky eaters. The high oil (18%) and fibre levels are naturally occurring, making it very compatible for use alongside all of the other feeds in the Saracen racing range. Equi-Jewel is specifically designed to nutritionally support the equine athlete by providing a highly palatable form of additional calories and protein. It is very effective at adding condition, building muscle and topline, and is useful for horses requiring a low carbohydrate energy source. The fat in Equi-Jewel is highly digestible, and is equally as digestible as corn oil, but in a more palatable, pelleted form. 500 grams of Equi-Jewel contains the same amount of energy as 250 millilitres (½ pint) of oil.

Feed 2-5 cups per day. This cup holds 200g Please contact us about the measuring cups for more accurate feeding.

RESEARCH PROVEN In a scientific study* conducted by Kentucky Equine Research, the effects of feeding Equi-Jewel and corn oil were compared. During strenuous exercise, horses fed Equi-Jewel had lower lactic acid levels than horses fed corn oil. The inclusion of rice bran as a substitute for corn oil in rations also resulted in lower heart rates and subsequent shorter recovery periods. *"An Evaluation of Corn Oil, Rice Bran and Refined Dry Fat as Energy Sources for Exercising Thoroughbreds". 16th Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society Proceedings, pp. 130-134

RiteTrac

® TOTAL DIGESTIVE TRACT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT

RiteTrac is a scientifically proven supplement designed to support total digestive tract health. Targeted at both the foregut and the hindgut of the horse, RiteTrac works in two distinct ways by neutralising and buffering excess acid. When fed in conjunction with correct management and forage regimes, RiteTrac helps to maintain optimal conditions in the horse’s stomach by restoring the normal gastric environment. RiteTrac is a granular powder that contains fast acting antacids, mucosal coating agents and a maintenance dose of Equishure to help support the optimum pH in the horse’s hindgut and maintain normal fermentation patterns. RiteTrac includes an antacid blend proven to be effective at elevating gastric pH in horses. Coating agents provide ongoing protection of the gastric mucosa, which brings rapid relief from the discomfort associated with gastric ulcers. RiteTrac is recommended for strategic use during training and travelling, or at any time when feeding patterns are compromised. It is also recommended as a digestive tract support for horses on chronic administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

NO GUTS, NO GLORY

RiteTrac will help to maintain optimum appetite and performance in horses by supporting normal gastric pH throughout the digestive tract. When RiteTrac is included in a meal, normal gastric pH is maintained for up to 6-8 hours allowing the horse to eat normally. Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Upset > Difficult or unsettled behaviour > Poor coat > Loss of appetite > Mild colic > Weight loss > Loose droppings > Stable vices such as wood chewing, box walking, and weaving FEEDING DIRECTIONS Feed 120 gms daily 1 scoop = 60 gms For best results, split between two feeds - if there is mild ulceration, RiteTrac can reduce symptoms by having a ‘protective’ effect. RiteTrac is available in 3 kg and 6 kg tubs, containing 25 or 50 servings of 120 grams respectively.

EquiShure

®

DIGESTIVE HEALTH SUPPLEMENT

EquiShure supports intestinal health by helping to maintain a normal pH in the horse’s hindgut. EquiShure is a timereleased hindgut buffer proven to reach the target organs as an encapsulated source of sodium bicarbonate for the colon and caecum. At-risk horses often express one or more signs that can reduce athletic performance. EquiShure is suitable for: > Horses with a decreased feed intake and poor appetite > Horses that are not maintaining optimum body condition > Horses on high grain diets > Horses that develop habits such as wood chewing, weaving or box walking > Horses with digestive upsets resulting in loose droppings The demands placed on horses as athletes dictate that substantial quantities of energy rich feeds are often consumed. Overconsumption of high starch concentrates can rapidly increase fermentation in the horse's hindgut. EquiShure can be used to help maintain a normal pH during the intense periods of a stressful racing campaign, or when travelling, or at any time when there is a greater reliance on high starch and cereal diets without adequate levels of forage.

Use the table below to determine recommended daily amount based on the horse’s grain intake, forage source, and bodyweight. It needs to be fed at different dose rates depending on these variables, and can be fed at higher levels during 'at risk’ periods. For best results, divide the recommended daily amount equally between grain meals. 1 scoop = 30 g. FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS

Nano-E

®

NATURAL VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENT

NATURAL vs SYNTHETIC VITAMIN E - THE SOURCE MATTERS Recent studies by Kentucky Equine Research have shown that the form and source of Vitamin E do make a difference to horses. Nano-E is a revolutionary natural supplement that provides unsurpassed Vitamin E nutrition to horses of all ages. Natural Vitamin E is used in designated Saracen diets, whereas Nano-E is a water soluble liquid supplement which provides 250 iu of Vitamin E per millilitre, and can be administered orally, or topically on feed. With the introduction of Nano-E, there is now a more bioavailable and effective form of Vitamin E with accelerated absorption rates because the product is water-soluble. It can be used strategically to great effect because of its rapid availability. Nano-E is an organic source of Vitamin E. It has superior bioavailability compared with the commonly used synthetic versions, being more highly digestible and preferentially metabolised by the horse. Moreover, this natural form of Vitamin E is retained in tissues for longer periods of time, creating a reservoir that allows it to be instantly available when the horse most needs it, namely in times of stress or during periods of confinement. Vitamin E contributes richly to the well-being of the horse and plays an imperative role in immune, cardiovascular, circulatory and reproductive functions. In addition, Vitamin E is an essential component of bodywide antioxidant defences. During Confinement Horses that do not have access to pasture may not be consuming optimal levels of Vitamin E. Nano-E provides this essential vitamin in a form that is easily absorbed, and is appropriate for horses of all ages that are stabled due to training schedules, travel, or injury.

Differences in relative bioavailability of various vitamin E sources. Nano-E is more bioavailable than other common sources of vitamin E. Synthetic bioavailability equals 1.

For Performance Horses asked to work strenuously can benefit from the strategic supplementation of Nano-E. A regular schedule of training and racing makes racehorses susceptible to muscle damage, which is due largely to oxidative stress. Nano-E provides fast-acting antioxidant protection for hard-working horses that can be timed to provide peak protection. Research Confirms Efficacy Recent studies have looked at serum and muscle levels of natural Vitamin E in horses fed Nano-E over a 6 week period. The results of this study show that high levels of water dispersible natural vitamin E can increase α-tocopherol levels in the muscle of deficient horses.

Each water-soluble vitamin E nanoparticle in Nano•E is encapsulated or surrounded by liposomes, which allows the nanoparticle to mix evenly throughout a water-based environment, such as the gastrointestinal tract.

Supplementation of 5,000 IU of nano dispersed natural α-tocopherol (KERx Nano-E) was provided in the morning feed 5 days a week. Serum concentrations of vitamin E increased significantly by two fold (p= 0.0037) and muscle concentrations increased by over 3 fold (p=0.05).

RECOMMENDED FEEDING LEVELS OF NANO-E™

• Maintenance levels for stabled horses without access to good grazing 4 – 8 ml per day (1000 – 2000 iu) • Pre-race loading - give 12-20 ml 6-12 hours prior to a race, during long distance travelling or leading up to a stressful event Nano-E is available in 450-ml containing a minimum of 250 iu per ml of Vitamin E as d-alpha-tocopherol. Nano-E should be administered orally or top-dressed onto dry feeds at the time of feeding. For best results, the supplement should be fed soon after removal from the bottle.

EO-3™

SOURCE OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS DHA & EPA

EO-3 is a unique source of omega-3 fatty acids, derived from marine sources that can help maintain an optimal omega-3: omega-6 fatty acid ratio in equine diets. These essential fatty acids cannot be made by the horse and have to be supplied by the diet. There are two main categories of essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Grass fed horses receive a large proportion of omega-3 essential fatty acids from their grazing. Hay and cereals contain less omega-3’s. The equine body is more suited to a diet higher in omega-3’s compared to omega-6’s. Modern feeding regimes, combined with management and an increased reliance on conserved forages, could mean that some horses are receiving a higher proportion of omega-6 fatty acids. Supplementing a racehorse's diet with EO-3 will help to restore the balance.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS > Increases the omega-3: 6 ratios in horses fed high cereal, low pasture diets > Superior source of omega-3 fatty acids compared to plant sources > Highly palatable in comparison to other marine derived sources of omega-3 fatty acids > High percentage of long chain omega-3 fatty acids > Highest ratio of omega-3: 6 fatty acids when compared to other commonly fed oils > Supporting joint health > Positive effects on coat condition, allergic reactivity and skin sensitivity RESEARCH Plant derived omega-3’s are converted in the body from their basic form to more complex and highly effective forms. Marine derived omega-3 sources supply these more complex forms directly into the body and therefore are a more potent way of supplying omega-3’s.

Equine athletes supplemented with EO-3 benefit from a reduction in inflammatory response. In addition, EO-3 has demonstrated benefits to the cardiovascular system, reproductive performance, and bone development in numerous research studies in a variety of animal species. The consumption of EPA and DHA from a source such as EO-3 is the only way to ensure that these fatty acids are available for metabolism of the “less-inflammatory” compounds and other metabolites beneficial for the horse’s overall health and well-being.

SPECIALIST

Saracen Horse Feeds is committed to seeing groundbreaking research through to its practical application; thus guaranteeing a lead over the competition, and giving its customers an edge over theirs.

Quality Statement Every bag of Saracen feed is manufactured in a UFAS accredited mill and undergoes strictly documented quality control procedures. A comprehensive system is in place to ensure the consistency and quality of all products manufactured by Saracen Horse Feeds for equine use. The adopted quality system is the AIC (Agricultural Industries Confederation) Universal Feed Assurance Scheme. The quality system in place is structured in a logical manner that follows established HACCP (Hazard Analysis And Critical Control Points) to identify potential nutritional, microbial or physical hazards. Controls are applied to each area of the company’s activities where performance can have an impact on finished product quality. > Design and maintenance of manufacturing sites and plant > Quality control > Storage of both raw materials and finished product > Selection of feed ingredients > Manufacturing principles > Loading, transport and delivery > Personnel & training > Documentation Written procedures are included in the quality system in accordance with the AIC Feed Assurance Scheme, and these quality records form an important part of it. The records include information on product and raw material specifications, raw material and finished product test results, and testing procedures for the presence of naturally occurring contaminants, which are considered prohibited by the equine regulatory authorities. To ensure that the company continually meet the requirements of the UFAS scheme, internal audits are carried out on a regular basis covering all aspects of the business and an independent audit is carried out on an annual basis. Saracen Horse Feeds joined the code of practice for feed manufacturers that the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) put in place on 1st October 2009. The Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS), Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances (NO PS) Code has been developed by BETA in response to the increased incidence of positive dope tests in racehorses. The NOPS scheme, whilst not a guarantee, is a risk-assessment based approach to reducing the chance of feed being contaminated with naturally occurring prohibited substances, such as morphine, for example. Both the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and the National Trainers Federation (NTF) have endorsed the BETA NOPS Code, which sits alongside our UFAS annual audit. As an approved member of the new code, we use the logo like a kitemark, a sign of reassurance to owners and trainers of the stringent quality management procedures that have been undertaken during every step of the sourcing, storage, transport and manufacturing processes for each product.
