CLIENT: Rusakov Worker’s Club

ARCHITECT: Konstantin Melnikov

LOCATION: Moscow, Russia

COMPLETION: 1929

by Hattie Thompson, Joelle Rumblelow, Jess Robinson, Nectarios Fotopoulos

Layout

Isolated use of small auditorium.

Served Spaces Servant Spaces Diagram of large auditorium in use.

The Servant spaces include backstage (rear of stage) , a working man’s club ( under stage ) and dance studios (front of stage).

Form- Geometry

The geometry of the buidling could be interpreted in the abstraction of the hammer and sickle, which is the communist workers symbol. The three triangles that make up the plan of the building each form perfect circles. The space between the red and the brown circles makes exactly the shape of the sickle. The triangle invades the circle as the hammer invades the sickle.

Circulation

The light green highlights the main circulation space that vistors would follow and the dark green highlights the staircases.

The image above shows the variation of light throughout the building. The main auditorium and seating/cinema screens are very dark, ideal for productions and films and would be lit with artificial light. The front facade has two strip windows running down the length which lets in enough light for the stairwells and general circluation area.

Construction

Mixed construction of reinforced concrete frame with load bearing brick. Materials: Brick Concrete Glass

Model

This is an early concept sketch of a section. The relationship between the audience and the performer on stage has been considered here as the geometry of the fan optimises the spatial acoustics.
