STRATEGY Our product will address the inefficiency and non-user friendly design of the common site, Reddit.com. In our redesign, we aim to keep the classic minimalism of the site while making it more visually appealing as well as a less overwhelming and easier experience for the user.
MONETIZATION Reddit is 100 percent community-driven and therefore it is important to Reddit’s users to not make them feel like the company focuses solely on a revenue stream. Currently they offer premium membership programs and are slowly moving into utilizing advertising outlets on the site. The site relies on users posting hundreds of conversation threads often recommending different types of products or services - serving a huge opportunity for advertising. Therefore, we aim for our redesign to continue to utilize advertizing as a means of monetization as well as using user data to build profiles.
DELIVERY PLATFORM Our delivery platform is a web based application similar to the current platforms that Reddit currently holds. Our website will also be mobile and tablet friendly and we anticipate on an application being created in future redesigns.

OUR PRODUCT SOLUTION
digg.com
Currently reddit is seen as the best site to find current and relevant user generated content according to each user’s preferences. By changing things with the UI, we hope to make the user base (estimated to be 7% of all internet users) even larger and more effective for finding things of their interests.
tumblr.com
OUR PRODUCT
TECHNOLOGY IS THE TECHNOLOGY FEASIBLE? We have reason to believe that our project is technically feasible because not only are our changes minuet and relatively non disruptive, but it also has only relatively basic programming needs for the backend and frontend. HIGH LEVEL IMPLEMENTATION PLAN:
The high-level implementation plan for our design is a redesign of the view for scrolling through the Reddit feed. Rather than strictly having the list of links and titles that you need to click to view the photo or content, there will be a similar layout that is more “preview-focused” where there is a larger image with a better quality text summary and improved overall aesthetics. This way we give dedicated Reddit fans the ability to use the layout that they are used to and maintain the integrity of the website while improving the readability functionality and ease of use. We are also considering adding the feature of allowing the user to easily open up the reddit content in a new tab or expand it in the current view rather than having it take over the page, which requires them to press “back” and potentially lose their spot on the page, and interrupt the user’s flow of surfing.
OUR USER LARGE, LOYAL USER BASE OF APPROXIMATELY 234 MILLION UNIQUE VISITORS PER MONTH TEENAGERS AGES 14-17 WHO ONLY MAKE UP ABOUT 8% OF REDDIT USERS, AS OF 2014 NEWS/CURRENT EVENT CONSUMERS ARTISTIC AUDIENCE
HYPOTHESIS Reddit already boasts a large, diverse user base, accruing approximately 234 million unique visitors per month; consequently, our redesign plan stresses the priority to retain those users who are largely comprised of males ages 18-29.
QUESTIONS FOR POTENTIAL USERS: Who[m] do you typically see browsing Reddit? What do you expect to or hope will change after the Reddit redesign? When do you typically browse media/entertainment other sites similar to Reddit? Where would you turn if you are not pleased by the redesign? Why are you not currently a Reddit user? How can Reddit redesign its UX in order for you to become an avid user?
HYPOTHESIS ANALYSIS In addition, we plan on targeting the teenage market (ages 14-17) who currently make up only 8% of Reddit users (as of 2014). We see this teenage market as a potentially huge market segment for first-time users. The teenage market is responsive with and acknowledging of modern UI/UX and, therefore, also more disengaged with and disparaging of outdated UI/UX--even more so than their Millenials and Generation X counterparts. We feel this is a major reason for the small teenage participation and a Reddit weakness that we can readily remedy. We will also target users who want to not only keep up-to-date on news and current events but also desire an added hint of quirkiness and humor in the articles they are reading. Reddit is already synonymous with quirky, funny, and fast content. Our redesign plan will tackle the need for an organized and easy-access user experience integral in news sites/apps by efficiently indexing subreddits and news categories, so users can quickly sift through readable article headlines and previews. Sites like Buzzfeed have thrived off this market segment of users for years, and we want a piece of the pie!
Our Reddit redesign will also attract artistically inclined users. We hope to improve the UI such that it is simplistically sophisticated--that is, UI that makes the content pop without adding too much. This simplistically sophisticated phenomenon is currently wildly popular in the modern art world in which minimalism is at the peak of its appreciation. In addition, we will improve the viewing of media, such as images, videos, gifs, and more. This improvement--namely, larger and easier to access media, as well as previews--will enhance the fluidity of the user experience by minimizing clicks and new tabs while showing larger images. A precedent for this design and competitor for the user base is Tumblr.
USER RESEARCH

VALUE PROPOSITION Reddit Redesign restructures and rejuvenates Reddit by fusing its beloved simplistic quirkiness with modern minimalistic design and organizational techniques. This long-awaited facelift pays homage to Reddit’s years of success by invoking its signature style and feel as the bulletin board or front page of the internet--a move sure to be appreciated by its current, passionate fan base. In addition, Reddit Redesign achieves a more fluid user experience that captivates younger, artistic, and news-consuming potential users by incorporating a more youthful design and a more responsive and accessible organizational structure through automatically viewed media and comments, improved accessing and indexing of subreddits and corresponding tabs, and easier-to-read article previews that include a corresponding picture.
USER ROLES Users for entertainment, choose not to submit content and rather just comment & up/ down vote content Users who submit content using it as an outlet to share projects, images, etc. Users who submit content for financial gain and advertisement
USER ROLES CONTINUED... Average everyday user is male aged 18-29. Power users 2-3 hours per day
Casual users >1 hour per day Non-users willing to try laggards
Within the users and non-users groups, we will also target an even distribution of age ranges, races, and other demographic categories
HOW TO OBTAIN USERS Due to the fact that we are choosing to redesign a product that already has a strong and very vocal user base, we plan to target the current users of reddit to get their commentary on our concept for the redesign. We plan on targeting the different types of reddit users as well from avid addicted users to more casual users to content-creating users. In order to obtain users for our research we will reach within our own networks and identify and evaluate the category that they fall into. We plan on choosing individuals based off differentiators like age, gender, how frequently they use reddit, and why they use reddit.
INFORMATION TO COLLECT NAME: AGE: GENDER: WHY DO YOU USE REDDIT?
USER RESEARCH METHODS We will use focus groups, interviews, surveys, and field studies as methods to guide our research.
DO YOU LOGIN TO REDDIT? WHAT KIND OF CONTENT DO YOU USUALLY LOOK AT ON REDDIT? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A REDDIT USER? HOW MANY HOURS PER WEEK ARE YOU ON REDDIT?
USER RESEARCH METHODS We have chosen these four methods because they seem varied enough to get a large spread of data and concise in number enough to ensure that each of these methods gets proper attention and enough repetition so that we can have a better likelihood of having unskewed data based off of lack of trials. Additionally, we chose each of these methods because they seemed to best suit our needs. A focus group would give us ideas that we had not even thought of and would do this better than the other options as it would allow our users to co-communicate and bounce ideas off of one another. Additionally, interviews would be a good idea since it would allow us to specifically target those who are avid reddit users (otherwise known as some of the people that we may have the hardest time converting) and thus probably have a lot to say and are knowledgeable about the topic--probably even more so than we are. We will be conducting online surveys as well because even though they can very easily lead to a bias, they will gather us a large amount of information without our having to spend too much time conducting them. Thus we can put our time into other methods while collecting survey data in the background. Lastly, we will be conducting field studies so we can observe both avid reddit users and those who are trying reddit for the first time to see what they are struggling with (or enjoying) by having them voice their opinions aloud or watching their facial expressions as they interact with the website. Although intervening in a field study could disrupt the integrity of the test, we find that it is necessary to best gain the specific information that we are looking for.
PAIRING USERS & METHODS Surveys for everyone. Large amounts of data from different user groups will help paint a picture of what the users want. Focus group for each type of user. This sections off the data and allows for us to see how each user group likes or dislikes the current format and how to improve to serve each better. Interviews for the casual and power user will allow us to see what will help bring in new users as well as how to better retain the current avid ones. Field studies for the non-user and casual user will help us see how to make the current format better by observing the facial and body language as they navigate the site.
FOCUS GROUPS Who here has heard of the site reddit? When was the last time you were on the site? What do you use the site for? What do you like about it? What do you dislike about it?
FIELD STUDY AGE: GENDER: HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE SITE BEFORE? HAVE YOU EVER USED THE SITE BEFORE? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE ON THE SITE?
SURVEY CONDUCTION Surveys: Website Surveymonkey or Google Surveys Focus Group: Video recorded in person meetings with the user groups. Interviews:Video recorded in person one on one meetings. Field study: Video record the person attempting to use the site for 10 minutes.
SURVEY & INTERVIEW HOW OLD ARE YOU? WHAT IS YOUR GENDER? WHAT KIND OF USER WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF? (POWER USER, CASUAL USER, NON-USER) HOW MANY HOURS PER WEEK DO YOU THINK YOU USE REDDIT? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WENT ON REDDIT? DO YOU HAVE A REDDIT ACCOUNT? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT THE CURRENT SITE? HOW WOULD YOU RANK THE EASE OF USE FOR THE SITE? (1-10) WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THE CURRENT SITE? HOW WOULD YOU CHANGE THE CURRENT SITE TO MAKE THINGS BETTER? WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 SUBREDDITS YOU FOLLOW? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A REDDIT USER?

BrittanyH: Had a difficult time finding other pages than just the home page. Couldn’t find the categories page.
BrittanyH: Got frustrated with the fact that the site redirected her to an external page but didn’t create a new tab therefore everytime she clicked on something she had to press the back button to the reddit rather than exiting out of a page. You can see this at :12 & :40 MackiA: Didn’t understand the concepts of subreddits or where those categories were. Compared it to twitter trending hashtags except more confusing. MackiA: Could barely navigate the site without getting frustrated. Looked in the comment section but had a difficult time finding it. MackiA: Didn’t realize that there were category pages. Only thought the site was the main landing page. JoshR: Before video found site hard to navigate and was told that there was more than just a main feed. Didn’t take advantage of exploring new topics (just stuck to the feed and searching “skiing”).
RESULTS, CONTINUED... JoshR: Found search bar easily but couldn’t figure out about commenting.

RESULTS BenT: While watching him interact with the site after the interview you can tell that frequent users understand how to navigate the site. BenT: Though he doesn’t like the UI and agrees that the site is ugly and outdated, he still uses the site on an everyday basis because he has learned how to navigate and use it.
BenT: Though he hasn’t been a power user during his 4 years of using the site, he has maintained an account for all 4 years. BenT: Thinks the design is over simplified to the point where it is confusing. LizzyW: Strongly dislikes the commenting section of reddit (the algorithm for sorting them doesn’t work quite right for her and she dislikes the people who write the comments). LizzyW Finds site easy to use but thinks she could be biased because she’s so used to it LizzyW Doesn’t like how they sort strongest opinionated which are all biased (when you sort by most popular).
JosephM: Describes that you work with reddit in a specific way and that you have to be careful to not use modern UI concepts when redesigning because people don’t interact with reddit in a modern type of way. JosephM: Watching him interact with the site he allows his browser to be filled with tabs rather than going back to the site everytime, he command clicks a bunch of links from reddit and then goes through each tab.

SCENARIO 1 It’s about 12pm on a Saturday and Kyle groans to the sound of his alarm going off (a newer model, suggested by someone whom he can’t remember the name of from Reddit that he uses to ensure he doesn’t sleep in and “waste his day away”). Okay, it was more of his mom’s idea than his. Grumbling he reaches for his phone and scrolls through Reddit to see what news has transpired since he checked before he fell asleep the night prior at around 2am? 3am? 4? He’s not entirely sure as Dungeons and Dragons can “really make the time pass, dude”. Plus, Sungapotamus14 was very active on Reddit last night, giving him all sorts of pointers (some that he may or may not have agreed with). He checks his clock. 2pm already? Wow how the time has flown by. He proceeds to roll out of bed and sludge down stairs to get the breakfast that his mom has set out for him, still hot as he rarely makes it downstairs before 2pm anyways. Shortly after, he returns to his bed and checks his phone messages. Two from Tennis students claiming that they will have pressing matters and will miss practice this upcoming Friday night. Hmm, the night of the dance at the local high school. Nice try. Another message from his recent ex-girlfriend, Monica, and sighs. Something about how he needs to get a life beyond his computer. Again, nice try. He then proceeds to flee to Reddit and within a few minutes he has a pun about ex’s that he proceeds to post to his Facebook. Ha. That’ll show her. Since the end of that relationship he can’t bear to finish the latest season of Gilmore Girls that they were watching together. Since he’s convinced that he has watched “everything” on Netflix and Hulu, he resorts to Reddit to give him a more “manly” TV show option. Of course, once on Reddit he needs to check the news incase something has transpired within the past 3 hours since he last checked. Nope. Nothing but political jargon. *eye roll*. Once on the feed to scope out up and coming TV series he clicks on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”. Sounds manly enough. However, after scrolling through pages of responses without much of an actual review, he gives up and resorts to finishing Gilmore Girls anyways. The remaining two seasons that he had left later, he watches the sun rise and begins to fall asleep. However, right before his eyes close he sighs to himself and mumbles, “Wow. What a productive day”.
FEATURES Filter of content that matches keywords -given only content pertaining to the TV show he wants (e.g., Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) - can remove posts pertaining to the TV show he doesn’t want (e.g., Gilmore Girls) Top 10 voted comments in a thread are visible at start of responses, and the others are available after clicking to expand. - Kyle can look at top reviews without clicking on every thread first Preview of popular posts in subreddit preview - faster searching Flexible ordering of posts in each subreddit page (most up votes, most down votes, date, etc) - Kyle doesn’t have to sift through unwanted content, so he doesn’t have to spend the entire night searching to no avail
FEATURES CONTINUED... Follow favorite subredditers and get updates on activity - Kyle can follow Sungapotamus14 and get easier access to Sungapotamus14’s posts and interactions since he enjoys Sungapotamus14’s puns so much Keep track of posts last visit and give option to only see content since after last visit - Kyle doesn’t have to scroll through content he already saw and only gets content after he started his Dungeon and Dragons game - better for news-related and current events posts that Kyle seems to be fond of

SCENARIO 2 It’s another Friday morning and Michelle’s alarm goes off at 8am. She grabs her phone and proceeds to scroll through her messages, pinterest newsfeed, and weather app, because she read somewhere (Reddit, perhaps) that staring at your phone screen can wake you up, or, something like that. After promptly 8 minutes of mindless scrolling she hops out of bed, throws on her newest athletic gear that she saw was trending a few weeks prior, and goes for a run. About an hour later she sets herself up at her dining room table and ponders what she is going to do today as no one in their right mind has class on Friday. Recently, she has been experimenting with going gluten-free and vegetarian, and checks over her shoulders to see if anyone is watching before logging onto Reddit to check r/FoodPorn. Yum. What she’d give to have just one more carb… nope. Cabo is too fast approaching. She hears a rustling at the door and quickly tries to switch to “gluten free food porn”. Unfortunately, she has little to no luck and winds up switching over to Pinterest as they do a good job of narrowing your search via keywords. Soon later, she begins to feel anxious about not having any homework to do (as she usually does but is very good about being on top of it) and stares off at the wall, only to notice how barren it seems to look. Ah! A project! That’s exactly what she needs. She logs back on to the subReddit r/DIY, but fails to find anything that’s both what she is looking for and in her price range (she’s recently been dealing with the reality of a college student trying to save up money for Cabo Spring Break). Sigh. Back to Pinterest again. After a few hours of meticulous planning, she has a list of all of the materials she needs and logs back into Reddit, for the third time today, to check to see if there are any local events going on that would make her trip longer than it needs to be (she isn’t one for wasting time). She also isn’t thrilled about having to log into Reddit multiple times in the span of a few hours and deems that it is enough for one day. After completing her project and going out to dinner and drinks with her friends, she comes home to her roommate lying in her bed next to a plate of freshly baked cookies. Okay, she decides it’s probably in her best interest to start her cabo diet tomorrow, and curls up next to her roommate as they scroll through the Reddit newsfeeds of cute animals and funny jokes (a usual weekly tradition for them). And so what if she said she had used enough Reddit for the day? She’s shamelessly addicted.
FEATURES Filter of content that matches keywords. Keep a list of the highest voted posts in subreddit and email them to the user at the end of the week or option to display list upon log-in -helps keep weekly users like Michelle up-to-date without having to mindlessly scroll through a week’s worth of contents that could take forever Better media viewing (pictures, videos, vines, etc) in previews so Michelle doesn’t have to click the link since all she wants to see is the picture. Below the Reddit post, include three previews of three similar posts - Michelle can see other DIY posts similar to the one she is viewing so she can get more ideas for her DIY project - Michelle can see similar media right after viewing media she likes - or she can temporarily blacklist a post similar to the one she is viewing and doesn’t like for a session so she doesn’t have to see any food posts while she is putting off her Cabo diet with her roommate Have a process where keywords are asked for in a subreddit. when the keyword appears in a post in that subreddit, an email is sent to the user containing a link. FUNCTIONAL ELEMENTS SEARCH
A search bar would allow the user to search for key terms and provide a page that only shows results based on the key terms (the one that Reddit has now is very insufficient). Kyle: “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” Michelle: “Cabo Spring Break”
FILTER
A filter allows the user to either get rid or target of parts of the results on the page that you do not wish to see via keyword, genre, et cetera. i.e. if you’re on r/food you could filter for the word “gluten-free” to find predominately gluten free food posts
Kyle: filters television review feed by television shows that he likes to watch (i.e. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.); can remove posts pertaining to the TV show he doesn’t want (i.e. Gilmore Girls) Michelle: can temporarily blacklist a post similar to the one she is viewing and doesn’t like for a session so she doesn’t have to see any food posts while she is putting off her Cabo diet with her roommate; can find less expensive DIY projects and DIY projects more related to her project; find “gluten-free” or “vegetarian” related posts on r/FoodPorn

EDITS
- Removed the trash can feature from #2 - The layout of the toolbar was edited as well as the removal of a profile image for the user - Removal of profile page and inserted the features/tabs from the page into the customized toolbar - Open post page was changed to a whole page rather than the overlay for visual reasons #9 - Added a page for users to post on the site
PG.14
MOBILE - WIREFRAME
EDITS
- Created different versions of the toolbar feature for users vs. non-users - Added login and sign up features to the toolbar - An edit toolbar page was seen as excessive and wasn’t needed so we integrated instead into the toolbar itself - Profile page image was removed due to the fact that reddit users usually like to stay anonymous - Home page for mobile we enlarged the images and removed the up/down swiping feature due to feedback that it was a confusing feature - Search and results page was integrated together due to the fact that features were similar - Post to reddit page and button added
