The proposed starting point, the Centre National de Cyclisme de Bromont, pays tribute to cyclist Lyne Bessette, who trained there and rode this itinerary as one of her training routes on the road to the Olympics. It’s also a great spot to discover the joy of riding dirt and gravel paths as these are some of the region’s most scenic.

Looking for tranquility and gravel paths? Look no further. On this route, sturdy tires are a must—you might even want to opt for an electric bike. (Rental at Foyer du Sport, Coaticook, foyerdusport.com). You’ll pedal through quaint villages like Hatley and the municipality of Barnston West (Kingscroft, Way’s Mill) before returning via Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook. Gravel roads, like Chemin Perreault, offer some of the most stunning views onto the region.

Val-Saint-François AND MRC des Sources

This route is built on a former railway and is a leg of the Route Verte. Between Richmond and Danville, you’ll ride through agricultural fields—a calming, quasi-meditative experience if we do say so ourselves! Good to know: In Danville, the Welcome Centre connects onto a bike workshop. And between Danville and Warwick, you’ll have the option ride the bike path to Kingsey Falls, an utterly charming village.

With plenty of wildlife, two beaches, activities and, of course, the mountain itself, there are plenty of reasons to visit this park. Oh, and did we mention biking? Some 30 kms of trails weave through the park, including a 7.4 km leg of the Route Verte and La Cavalière, a new 10.6 km (one-way) trail. Also new? Five beginner-friendly mountain bike trails inaugurated in 2019. When you combine fatbike and mountain bike trails, you’ll find 26 kms of fun at the PNMO.

Tucked in a forest valley typical of the Appalachian Lowlands, this national park is part of the sprawling regional bike path network that spans over 250 kms. In the park itself you can ride a 19 km path that winds around Réservoir Choinière, then cool off at the beach.

This park sits on the shores of Grand Lac Saint-François, a choice launching spot for outdoor adventures of all kinds including, of course, biking. There are some 30 kms to explore within the park’s boundaries, plus 16 kms used exclusively for fatbiking in the Saint-Daniel sector (rentals available).

Not only is this park the world’s first Dark Sky Preserve but it has two mountains (Saint-Joseph and Mégantic), the Mont-Mégantic O b s e r va t o r y a n d A S T R O L a b . Activities abound, including 8 kms of gravel bike path (return). Note that Parc Régional du Marécage-desScot’s 8 km multi-purpose path is connected to the park.

Safe Cycling Tips

RESPECT THE CODE

Bike helmet

DID YOU KNOW…

63 % to

88 %

Wearing a helmet dramatically reduces the risk of head injuries, including severe cranial trauma, by 63 to 88% for cyclists of all ages. Falls and collisions (with a fixed object, cyclist or pedestrian) are the causes of most bike accidents.

ADJUST YOUR HELMET A bike helmet should fit snugly and cover the top of your head: It shouldn’t wobble or fall forward or back. When shopping for a helmet, look for certifications like

CSA, CPSC, ASTM, EN or SNEL to guarantee that the helmet meets rigorous safety standards.

For your safety and that of everyone around you, including pedestrians, drivers and fellow cyclists, always follow the rules outlined in the Highway Safety Code. RIDE WITH TRAFFIC Bicycles must ride in the same direction as traffic.

NO headphones! Quebec’s Highway Safety Code prohibits riding with headphones. USE OF ELECTRONICS IS PROHIBITED … Unless it is safely mounted on your bike and used for hands-free calls or GPS. … Unless you’re stopped on the side of the road.

Certification stickers are usually found inside the helmet or on the packaging.
