My place to level up

My place to meander

My place to gravel bike

My place for mountain biking

Like a challenge? This is the place to be! Experienced cyclists will find elevation gains and steep climbs, plus distances reaching the 80- or 100-kilometre range. If you have a sporty spirit, strong legs, and lots of determination, you’re sure to have a blast.

You watch the scenery slowly roll by, make all the sight-seeing stops, enjoy a picnic along the way… For you, stopping to smell the roses more than a cliché—it’s a way of life. Recognize yourself? Take it easy on these eight road and bike path routes and experience the joy of a laid-back, discovery-packed ride.

To ride gravel paths is to discover winding country roads, to explore charming villages, to gaze at scenic landscapes tucked between sprawling fields and dense forests, to enjoy the tranquility of taking the road less traveled, to unearth under-theradar gems, to discover loads of attractions, and to feel utterly free. Gravel bike enthusiasts, our most beautiful country roads await!

Mountain biking’s popularity is soaring and the Townships region is more than ready to welcome the influx of riders. Every year, new single and double track trails emerge as the realm of possibilities increases. Whether you’re a newbie on your debut ride of a seasoned pro looking for technical cross-country trails and jumps, you’ll find the experience you’re looking for.

We’ve curated nine routes perfect for families, or anyone who enjoys the safety and comfort of riding on bike paths. Not only are they accessible and traffic-free but these circuits offers ample kid-friendly stops like parks, restaurants, beaches and more.

The proposed starting point, the Centre National de Cyclisme de Bromont, pays tribute to cyclist Lyne Bessette, who trained there and rode this itinerary as one of her training routes on the road to the Olympics. It’s also a great spot to discover the joy of riding dirt and gravel paths as these are some of the region’s most scenic.

Knowlton (Lac-Brome)

Come for the natural setting and access to Lac Gale, stay for the thermal baths, body treatments and healthy (yet tasty) spa fare.

This village stands out for its exceptional architectural heritage and New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny would tend to agree: She based the setting of her wildly popular Three Pines novels on this Townships village.

BROME-MISSISQUOI This route departs from Bedford and takes you to some of the region’s most unique historical landmarks like Walbridge Barn, the only dodecagonal barn in Quebec and the province’s smallest covered bridge (!). Le chemin Ridge

Vignoble l’Ardennais

As you ride under the canopy formed by the majestic centenarian trees bowing over the road, you’ll feel like a most honoured guest. Even if there weren’t two picturesque vineyards to check out—there are, by the way!— Chemin Ridge is a stunning ride.

There are plenty of reasons to drop by this Stanbridge East vineyard: the setting, the hospitality, the wines… And while you’ll certainly want to sample the whites, reds and rosés, treat your palate to the flavoured mistelles, too.

Note: Picnic tables are available. 205, chemin Ridge, Saint-Armand 450-248-3987 domaineduridge.com

5 Mystic Hamlet It may be tiny but Bedford’s neighbour is packed with historical gems, including Walbridge Barn, a 12-sided barn built in 1882. Enjoy a sense of calm and gratitude as you ride through.

3 Missisquoi County Museum This museum is comprised of three buildings: Walbridge Barn, Cornell Mill (built in 1830), and Hodge’s General Store, which served the community for 180 years. 2, rue River, Stanbridge East 450-248-3153 museemissisquoi.ca

(Rental at Vélotric, Coaticook, velotriccoaticook.com). You’ll pedal through quaint villages like Hatley and the municipality of Barnston West (Kingscroft, Way’s Mill) before returning via Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook. Gravel roads, like Chemin Perreault, offer some of the most stunning views onto the region.

This route is built on a former railway and is a leg of the Route Verte. Between Richmond and Danville, you’ll ride through agricultural fields— a calming, quasi-meditative experience if we do say so ourselves! Good to know: In Danville, the Welcome Centre connects onto a bike workshop. And between Danville and Warwick, you’ll have the option ride the bike path to Kingsey Falls, an utterly charming village.

Safe Cycling Tips BIKE HELMET DID YOU KNOW…

63 % to

88 %

Wearing a helmet dramatically reduces the risk of head injuries, including severe cranial trauma, by 63 to 88% for cyclists of all ages.

Falls and collisions (with a fixed object, cyclist or pedestrian) are the causes of most bike accidents. ADJUST YOUR HELMET A bike helmet should fit snugly and cover the top of your head: It shouldn’t wobble or fall forward or back. When shopping for a helmet, look for certifications like CSA, CPSC, ASTM, EN or SNEL to guarantee that the helmet meets rigorous safetystandards. Certification stickers are usually found inside the helmet or on the packaging.

THE RECOMMENDED ITINERARIES WERE VETTED BY TOURISM EASTERN TOWNSHIPS DURING THE SUMMER OF 2019 AND 2020. They are comprised of: - Bike paths, which are separate from traffic lanes. - On-road sections, chosen to minimise exposure to motorized traffic. Note that on-road sections do not necessarily have paved shoulders or signage for cyclists.

Bike repair (with service)

The mapped information reflects the condition of the paths and roads during the field work done by the Tourism Eastern Townships team in 2019 and 2020. Some information may have changed. We recommend checking road conditions and planning your trip carefully by contacting Tourism Eastern Townships.
