Before landing on the decision to brand a shop of jams and chutneys, much of the research was into the branding of store bought products. After doing this, it was necessary to find out what the shops audience would want from it, and if there is a big enough gap in the market for Miel Handmade to be successful.

Target Audience
The target audience is young professionals who may be seeking affordable home comforts, and people interested in cooking or baking who are keen to try new things.

Research
The brief was specific in paying close attention to competitors with in the same market as the chosen brand, and much of the visual research reflects that. It was this that informed the decision to ensure the brand had a homemade and authentic feel to it, prompting the audience to choose it over other brands. Similarly this also contributed to the decision to collaborate with an illustrator.

Concept
The brand is designed to make homely comforts available to people who work centrally in London, and to exhibit the homey nature of the brand in an upmarket setting.
Partnership
The decision to work with illustrator Izzy Zubaida came about due to my following her work over the past three years at college. Due to an interest in illustration, and wanting to work collaboratively with someone other than a graphic designer, I was very pleased with the outcomes and felt they emulated the ethos and ideals of the brand.
Development
The development stages for this brief were short, as the visuals were mostly dependent on the partnership. The final logo was chosen because of it’s slight hand rendered appeal, using typeface Wolf In The City and the way that it worked with the illustrations. Similarly, it was complimented by the use of Copperplate for the smaller copy.
Sarah Butler FINAL SOLUTIONS
Brief 5: Miel Handmade
Solutions
The final solutions for this brief consist of labels for nine flavours of jams and chutneys, and two types of oil, packaged in a rustic basket, alongside a menu, business cards and letterheads for the brand.

Labels
This was a collaborative brief with an illustrator who created the visuals for the labels, each featuring an individual image of their ingredients. The labels are designed to show the rustic and homemade nature of the brand, kept simple in a black illustration over a cream background.

Business Cards
The business cards much like the other printed ephemera emulate the concept of Miel (french translation of honey). They are designed to channel the nature of the brand, it’s authenticity and absence of any artificial entities that other brands may posses.
