Creating a Home I
Mixed Use Building
Kansas City, Kansas Fall 2016 Individual Project Sketchup, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, Unreal Engine This project creates a super block, modeled off of the European model, with many homes sharing a common green space. Within this super block, the community is given a grocery store, a gym, and several offices to open up small practices, a day care, community buildings, underground parking, ample green space, and additional housing to accommodate the growing community. This super block works to promote healthy lifestyles and simple lifestyles to its residents and the surrounding community. This mix of different uses creates for easy commute for residents, encouraging more pedestrian and bike traffic, while reducing vehicular traffic. The apartments are designed to accommodate small 3 person families, couples without children, students, and elderly . The many town homes placed throughout the super block design would accommodate the larger families and students in the area. Each apartment has as much outdoor space as possible which fulfills the main objective of the project, to promote healthy lifestyles to residents and the surrounding communities.

Rosedale is an interesting neighborhood that houses, most notably the University of Kansas Hospital and Medical School. The residents range from students going to the medical school, to families utilizing the parks, and the elderly who use the homes in the area and appreciate the medical schools’ close proximity. Because of the Hospital, traffic and parking become a large issue for the area, despite the several large parking lots and several story parking garages there is still a lack of parking for the residents and users of the Hospital.

In the research phase of the project, it was observed that Rosedale lacked in several amenities. Despite being a community that values health, there are no gyms or grocery stores. Rather the area is littered with several different fast food chains. The neighborhood design phase looked to give the community amenities that would lead to healthier life styles. The areas highlighted above were selected by my peers and myself as key areas that could be redeveloped to improve the community.

Establishing a Ring:
By placing a ring of town homes around the perimeter of the block it creates a closed courtyard open to pedestrians. This creates a transition of scale from mid rise mixed your to 2 story residential comforting to pedestrians.

Creating a Human Scale:
Breaking up the super block with a series of pedestrian paths and community and commercial buildings to create an approachable pedestrian scale that will encourage more foot traffic in the area

In order to create a human scale, a secondary building was placed in order to create a small courtyard. Because the building units have a mainly east-west orientation, there were portions of the building punched through in order to create branches of apartments off the common core to welcome natural light into all the apartments. To break up the facade, and create a human scale, parts of the first floor were inscribed. In order to make sure that each apartment had ample outdoor space the levels were tiered where the roof of the lower level would become the balcony of the apartment above. To create a stronger connection between the courtyard and the street there was a section of the grocery store fractured to create a pathway. To make the pathway look more purposeful, strategic notches were taken out of the first floor at the same angle the pathway is. In order to break up the facade further, points in the facade were carved out to allow for balconies on the 2 story apartments.

The Meeting Point I

Copenhagen, Denmark Fall 2015 Group Research, Individual Project Revit, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator The Copenhagen Harbor is in the process of evolving from an industrial harbor to a recreational area with harbor baths, living spaces, and culture to the water’s edge. Trekroner is a sea fort at the entrance to the Copenhagen harbor. It is one of three artificial islands created to defend the entrance to Copenhagen’s harbor. On visiting the site I noticed that there were two very distinct feelings. The interior was enclosed and looked in on the island, watching the calm water within. The exterior was exciting and created a feeling of exposure and freedom. From there Sweden, Copenhagen, and the development of the new harbor are visible. This design aims to expose these distinct feelings and incorporate them into one meeting point.

Danish Vernacular

The Danish Vernacular roofs in Copenhagen have a high pitch to the heavy rainfalls. In a model making exercise and this common shape was extruded into separate strips that would transform the form and create different and unique spaces. The shape mimicked more of something a religious building would incorporate so in cutting the top it created more of a profile similar to buildings around the city of Copenhagen and in doing so also replicating the forms of the other 3 buildings on the island. At this angle which created a stronger link to existing structure the strips were manipulated programmed creating a form of their own. Small enclosed seating areas for contemplation were formed in the pulling away of the planes and the folding on the exterior created a series of platforms for viewing, docking, and jumping into the sea.

Different spaces and activities are created by pulling away and stretching the strips as shown in the plans to the right. On the interior, small seating for contemplation and calm, on the exterior exciting places to experience the island in different ways. The roofs are color coded showing where the inhabited space is located in the light gray and where the roof is too steep to be used in the dark gray.

Filling the Void I
Mixed Media Museum
Copenhagen, Denmark Fall 2015 Group Research, Individual Project Sketchup, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator Copenhagen’s sea forts and fortifications are in the process of evolving from historical military landmarks to recreational areas with culture. Filling the Void focuses on creating a new archive of art, bridging the gap between art and education. The museum studies, conserves, and presents significant works of art across all times and cultures in order to connect people to creativity, knowledge, and ideas. The Museum consists of four main galleries Memory, Action, Matter, and Object, transforming the historic Kastrup Fort into an area open to the public to learn about famous pieces and present their own work. Each gallery representing a different media. Strategically placed courtyards allow patrons to walk outside and enjoy sculptures while also giving them hints to what is in the next gallery being able to create an allusion of seeing through both time and media and make connections that otherwise, might not have been visible.
The site is Kastrup Fort on the southern end of Copenhagen, in between the airport and city center it is a prime spot for a destination in the city. Right now the old fort is somewhat neglected. There have been ideas to reinvigorate it including a park for children and a small restaurant located on the island. But with the visible parts of the fortress being in disrepair and the interior continually locked from the publics eyes, the fortress is mostly used for its hills by joggers in the morning. This Museum is a chance to reinvigorate the unique landscape that is located here and to put in on display.

The site is a beautiful and unique feature of Copenhagen so preserving the integrity of that was essential The only space on the site that lacked in character was the flat area in the middle that had no vegetation, no foot traffic and no unique quality, just an empty gravel area. This project aims to elevate this part of the site to the quality of the rest on the fort. Starting by bridging the two bunkers to create unity between the 2 halves. Then, to preserve their presence, the museum was sunk into the ground. In order to elevate this part of the site to the rest a unique terrain was created using the roof structure and also functioned to let in different amounts of light into the gallery below.

The Response I
Tulane Culinary School
New Orleans, Louisiana Spring 2015 Individual Project Sketchup, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator At Tulane University, the medical program is expanding to include nutrition courses, complete with cooking classes in order to learn healthy cooking and lifestyles. At Tulane, they feel the medical practice is expanding to not only treat patients but to promote healthy living in response to the growing poor nutrition and lifestyles of this time. This project works within the preexisting fabric of the city and establishes a connection back to Tulane University. The goal of this project were very similar to the overall goals of the school, to promoting healthy living to the medical students attending but also to inspire the other students and the rest of the community, showing that integrating healthy decisions into your day is possible, easy, and fun. These objectives were accomplished by integrating the surrounding community, creating easy access to the site, establishing spaces for encouraged social interaction, and highlighting other amenities that encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Incoming Housing Development
The site for the school is neighbored by the existing medical school and a new housing development which factors into the programming near the neighboring streets. The site is located walking distance to the famous French Quarter, where, there are many amenities and tourist attractions. The Red Line Trolley has a stop directly in front of the location of the site for the new school and was used to create a moment of interest and intrigue from that lso that anyone getting off at that stop would feel inclined to investigate the school and what it has to offer.

Living Experience I
Eco Living Machine Center
Lawrence, Kansas Fall 2014 Individual Project Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator An Eco Living Machine processes black water into gray water using filtration by plants and mechanical filters. This project aims to establish a living machine on the University of Kansas to educate students about the difficult and time consuming process of filtrating water and promote awareness about water conservation as well as promoting a sustainable filtration process. The tanks are visible and on display to create a feeling like you are walking through the mechanics and see all the filtration processes. Any tours of the facility can then be taken up to the classroom which overlooks the tanks to study further. In order to promote water conservation, the roof to drain to one location and into a collection tank so that it could then be filtered by the machine.

Wall System
This assignment used a previous folding paper project and manipulate and create a wall system that does not rely on glue. I made a series of small envelope looking shapes and skewered them onto dowels that are connected to a frame. I then warped the frame to give it more of a three dimensional element with texture.

The Lantern I
Light Box
An image of floating lanterns over a lake was the inspiration for this project. Transforming an image into a light box using a series of layers. Patterns from the image were created using the lantern points, by connecting points in the image where the lanterns were located it created interesting shapes, incorporating those shapes into the layers. Light could enter the structure and foam core direct and block it creating different lighting qualities within the lantern. Since the layers were complex, two members of foam core pierce each layer, creating a dynamic element to the lantern.
