My partner and I worked together to draw inspiration from natural elements and combine them with programmatic needs in order to create a comfortable yet socially challenging courthouse. The program itself is complex, requiring the combination of 3 types of programs - public, private, and secure - which all need separate entrances and circulation ultimately leading to the courtroom. We wanted to reflect the program in the form and material in order to indicate and associate the programmatic use for the visitors of the space. The courtrooms and similar programs are rigid and orthogonal. The public space is open and slightly chaotic, reflecting the attitudes of those spaces. In contrast, the secure areas of the program; designed for prisoners, would be apparent to all the patrons as a large black concrete mass that coils around other elements. The public space is intended to be able to house the multitude of emotions seen there every day, from the anxiety of a court appointment, to the joy of a victory, or the disappointment of a loss. The forest-like atmosphere replicated through the structural components maintains an open space while obstructing sight lines for privacy. Utilizing these elements, we challenge the hierarchy of the people using the courthouse.

In a courthouse, it can be easy to tell who has the power and authority. Within the design, there is intent to visually and emotionally balance the power by displaying the program which is usually hidden and allow areas of privacy in the public realms. In taking these measures, we provide a sense of comfort for the visitors and a sense of wary for those in power.

Group Research, Individual Project

Programs Used

Revit, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator

The Copenhagen Harbor is in the process of evolving from an industrial harbor to a recreational area with harbor baths, living spaces, and culture to the water’s edge. Trekroner is a sea fort at the entrance to the Copenhagen harbor and is one of three artificial islands created to defend the entrance of Copenhagen’s harbor. As such a historic landmark so close to the city center, it is trafficked daily by both tourists looking to get a good view of the city from the water and by locals looking to have a picnic away from the city. This project provides an additional asset to a unique destination, weaving in and out of the island to form different types of spaces and experiences. The multitude of functions supported include docking, changing, eating, swimming, jumping, and viewing. Through this design inspired by the Danish vernacular, there is a creation of a common meeting point for tourist and local, adventurer and homebody, young and old.

21

Danish Vernacular

Pull

The Danish Vernacular roofs in Copenhagen have a high pitch due to the heavy rainfalls. In a model making exercise, this common shape was extruded into separate strips that would transform and weave in and out of the island to create different and unique spaces. The shape initially contained a religious quality. In cutting the top, a more appropriate profile was made, mimicking the forms of the other 3 buildings on the island. The strips were manipulated to fit the program and creating a form of their own. The small enclosed seating areas for contemplation were formed in the pulling away of the planes and the folding on the exterior created a series of platforms for viewing, docking, and jumping into the sea.

Kansas City, Kansas hosts the University of Kansas Medical School. There is a large demand in housing both from students looking for a short commute and the elderly looking to be near a doctor. This coveted plot directly across from the Medical School strives to provide needed housing and promote the intentions of the school for healthy living. Creating a Home does not focus solely on just housing but what a community needs in order to have a sense of place. Creating a healthy community includes establishing amenities for a healthy lifestyle such as a day care, gym, grocery store, office space and communal outdoor space. In order to have a sense of belonging this design creates a sense of privacy within the home. Apartments are arranged to promote connections with neighbors. Sunlight, and harnessing it, played a key role in the shape of the building. Outdoor spaces are emphasized to take advantage of the sunlight and promote healthy living.

At Tulane University, the medical program is expanding to include nutrition courses, complete with cooking classes in order to learn healthy cooking and lifestyles. At Tulane, they feel the medical practice is expanding to not only treat patients but to promote healthy living in response to the growing poor nutrition and lifestyles of this time. This project works within the preexisting fabric of the city and establishes a connection back to Tulane University. The goal of this project is very similar to the overall goals of the school - promoting healthy living to the medical students attending classes. There is a secondary attempt to inspire the other students and the rest of the community, showing that integrating healthy decisions into your day is possible, easy, and fun. These objectives were accomplished by integrating the surrounding community, creating easy access to the site, establishing spaces that encouraged social interaction, and highlighting other amenities that encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator

An Eco Living Machine processes black water into gray water using filtration by plants and mechanical filters. This project aims to establish a living machine on the University of Kansas to educate students about the difficult and time consuming process of filtrating water and to promote awareness about water conservation using a sustainable filtration process. The tanks are visible and on display to create a feeling of walking through the mechanics of the filtration process. Any tours of the facility can be taken up to the classroom which overlooks the tanks to encourage further study. In order to promote water conservation, the roof drains to one location and then into a collection tank so that it can then be filtered by the machine. This whole cycle is put on display to be examined and celebrated.

Copenhagen’s sea forts and fortifications are in the process of evolving from historical military landmarks to recreational areas with culture. Filling the Void focuses on creating a new archive of art, bridging the gap between art and education. The museum studies, conserves, and presents significant works of art across all times and cultures in order to connect people to creativity, knowledge, and ideas. The Museum consists of four main galleries Memory, Action, Matter, and Object, transforming the historic Kastrup Fort into an area open to the public to learn about famous pieces and present local artists work. Each gallery represents a different media. Strategically placed courtyards allow patrons to walk outside and enjoy sculptures while also giving them hints to what is in the next gallery; creating an allusion of seeing through both time and media to make connections that otherwise, might not have been visible.

The studio completed a series of work for a high end watch retailer over the last several years. I participated in the re-designing of the atrium space. There were two major aspects to be considered; the first was a grand central staircase and the second was the creation of a new glass roof over the atrium space. My responsibility was to model the staircase and glass roof components using Rhino. Once I had the staircase modeled, I consulted with my superiors on the options for the handrail. I indicated critical details that were unforeseen by the design team in the plans and sections but were visible in the model. I also modeled the two glass roof options. The first roof option was traditional, reflected the historical aspect of the building, and was similar to the existing roof with more structural elements. The second roof option was modern and slim, with fewer structural elements, and reflected the column structure in the atrium. I put together a combined model to export and send to our visualization consultant. In order to facilitate decision making on three open items, I created a diagrammatic axon. The open items requiring decisions were; the column size and shape next to the atrium, the spiral stair and handrail options, and the glass roof and its structure.

The studio entered a competition for a mixed use building in France. The program was very interesting as it incorporated dorms for music school students, offices, a laser tag facility, a brewery and tasting room, parking, and outdoor communal space. Incorporating all of these programmatic elements while meeting the height restrictions was challenging. Establishing a sunken shared outdoor space allowed us to address the site difficulties. The project manifested into an oversize pergola structure providing a cohesive space for the diverse program and establishing a sense of place. My task on this project was to create a detailed section perspective communicating the program without utilizing any titles. The section drawing was done during the design phase and was used as a tool to convey the space with more ease to the clients. As the shape and design of the project evolved, the drawing evolved and required constant updating with strict time constraints until the completion of the final drawing for the competition entry.

Upon starting my internship, I was assigned to a high school addition and renovation in North Kansas City that BNIM had just been awarded. During the summer, this project was in the programming phase. I performed studies to allow the clients to visually understand the possibilities based on their “wish list.” I researched and created a database of sizes of different departments of other area high schools. The data allowed us to compare the spaces the school sought against others in order to have an informed discussion. I generated a series of studies of the program that the school desired and compared it to our design team ideas to condense the program and make the project more affordable as seen below. I assisted in leading client meetings in which we had hard discussions about limiting programs and negotiating options in order to create a high quality project that accommodated its necessary use while reducing cost.
