STUDIOS Architecture

I collaborated with Marx Reality on the “Penthouse Collection,” a series of high-end rentable office spaces occupying the top 5 floors of 10 Grand Central. The concept featured individual offices on floors 32-34 and flexible usage for the top 2 floors as either a combined rental space or a premium building amenity, complete with co-working areas and event spaces. The amenity space boasted remarkable features, including a custom spiral staircase, lofty ceilings, two terraces, and expansive glass partitions showcasing breathtaking city views, including the Crystallizer building.

My role in the small team encompassed various aspects, such as floor planning, feature staircase design, ensuring compliance with codes, finish selection, creating presentations and graphics, preparing construction documents, and overseeing construction administration. The project’s focus on intricate detailing and customization demanded relentless attention to detail. It was an immensely gratifying experience to witness the transformation of the concept into a truly extraordinary and captivating space, highlighting the meticulous efforts of our team and the remarkable vision of Marx Reality.

Inspiration Imagery

The images above were used as inspiration imagery presented to the client. Through this process, we were able to hone in on the clients desire to not only use high end finishes but pay particular attention to the detailing throughout the project. We also discovered that the client gravitated toward darker moody tones, Which challenged us to bring a darker feeling, finishes and atheistic and weave it into an office setting.

The above images served as inspiration for the client, guiding our design direction. This collaborative process helped us identify the client’s strong preference for high-end finishes and meticulous detailing throughout the project. Additionally, we discovered the client’s inclination towards darker, moody tones, which presented a unique challenge in incorporating this aesthetic seamlessly into an office setting. Despite the complexity, we embraced this opportunity to infuse a darker ambiance and exquisite finishes, ensuring a cohesive and sophisticated outcome.

when it came to selecting finishes we wanted to maintain a luxurious timless look while also bringing an edge and moodiness that the clients responded to in our inspiration imagery. We did this by bringing in dark and modern finishes of walnut, marble and brass but timless and luxurious detailing and herringbone wood flooring throughout to brighten the space

When it came to selecting finishes, our goal was to strike a perfect balance between timeless luxury and a captivating edge that resonated with the client through our inspiration imagery. To achieve this, we curated a combination of dark and modern finishes such as walnut, marble, and brass. At the same time, we incorporated timeless and opulent detailing, accompanied by herringbone wood flooring throughout to infuse brightness into the space. This thoughtful amalgamation ensured a harmonious blend of sophistication and contemporary allure, elevating the overall design to new heights.

During the project, I undertook the task of creating multiple stair design iterations with varying costs. The main concept behind the stair was to craft a unique focal point that would showcase the breathtaking views of the Chrysler building through the double-height windows on the 36th floor. However, several factors came into play, such as the head height on the 35th floor, the need to adhere to ADA standards, and the limited depth of the space, further complicated by the client’s desire to incorporate a kitchen island in the pantry.

I worked on creating multiple stair design iterations that varied in cost. The idea behind the stair was to be a unique focal point showcasing the amazing views of the Chrysler building out of the double height windows on the 36th floor. There were many factoring constraints such as the head height on the 35th floor, maintaining ADA standards, and the depth of the space, made an even tighter squeeze by the clients desire to have a kitchen island in the pantry. In the end, we favored 2 straight run stairs connected by a curved portion - giving the look of a spiral stair while conserving the cost of curved glass.

After careful consideration, we ultimately decided on a design that featured two straight run stairs connected by a curved portion (option 3). This approach provided the appearance of a spiral staircase while also ensuring cost-effectiveness by opting for straight glass instead of more expensive curved glass. This solution allowed us to overcome the challenges posed by the space constraints and other requirements, resulting in a visually striking and efficient stair design that perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic of the project

Ongoing Programming and Masterplan STUDIOS Architecture

The masterplan collaboration with RXR involved multiple segments, each receiving varying levels of attention based on return value, cost, and leased space considerations. Our team focused on several key aspects, including the expansion of the underground theater, introducing new amenities to the existing parking garage, and creating amenity floors for the main tower. However, our primary focus centered around the redesign of the podium and plaza areas, as well as modernizing the top-of-house facade and crown.

My contributions to the project were diverse and impactful. I took charge of assembling all the graphics and presentation materials, creating comprehensive packages for the client. Additionally, I actively participated in generating design ideas for the lobbies and plaza schemes, and I provided input on options for the top-of-house facade. Through these efforts, I played a pivotal role in delivering a wellcoordinated and compelling design solution for the masterplan, showcasing the team’s collective expertise and dedication.

The original podium design featured escalators that transported people from the ground floor to the second floor, where they could then access the passenger elevators. The reason behind this arrangement was that the middle corridor was designated for back-of-house operations, specifically for loading and unloading freight.

The existing podium design brought people into the ground floor and up to the second floor with escalators to load into the passenger elevators. This was due to the middle corridor being used by back of house to load into the freight.

Through the strategic addition of an extra freight elevator, we successfully redirected freight operations to a lower level, thereby liberating the middle corridor. This redesign allowed us to provide all the lobbies with direct access to each elevator block at the ground floor. By opening up this corridor, we established a robust axis of connection from the avenue side through to the plaza, creating a seamless flow that we further emphasized in the facade design. This innovative approach not only enhanced the functionality of the space but also strengthened the overall coherence and visual appeal of the project.

By adding an additional freight elevator that brought the freight down and across on a lower level, we opened up the middle corridor to allow all the lobbies to have access to every elevator block at the ground floor. By opening up this cooridor we created a strong axis of connection from the avenue side through to the plaza that would be reinforced in the facade design.

It was important for us to emphasize th new connection corridor from avenue to plaza starting from the facade. We wanted to strip back the stonework to create an open and inviting entrance into the space that reinforces the connection to the plaza by framing it.

Emphasizing the new connection corridor from the avenue to the plaza was a significant priority for our design approach. To achieve this, we envisioned a striking facade concept that involved stripping back the stonework, creating an open and inviting entrance. By doing so, we aimed to reinforce the seamless connection to the plaza by framing it elegantly. This design choice not only enhanced the visual appeal of the entrance but also served as a powerful architectural statement, inviting people into the space and establishing a strong visual link between the avenue and the plaza.

Proposed Crown Elevation

Our goal with Worldwide Plaza was to revitalize its presence in the Manhattan skyline, elevating it to stand out prominently. To achieve this, we focused on modernizing the crown, employing a new light and glass design that retained the essence of the existing form, paying homage to its heritage. Simultaneously, a valuable opportunity presented itself when a tenant vacated their lease, allowing us to re-skin the facade. The client recognized this as a chance to further modernize the building’s appearance and enhance natural light infiltration across the floors, making it more appealing to potential businesses.

Worldwide plaza is a part of the Manhattan skyline and we wanted to modernize it to allow it to become a stand out by brightening up the crown with a new light and glass design with a nod to the past by maintaining the existing form. In addition, we had the ability to re skin the facade due to a tenet leaving their lease. The client saw this as a great opportunity to modernize more of the facade and bring in more natural light to the floors which would attract more businesses to the space. We created a series of options for them but ended up with a design that has a gradient from single story glass expansion to 2 story ones while maximizing the glass line on every floor.

In response, we crafted a range of design options, ultimately settling on a captivating gradient approach. Our design incorporated single-story glass expansions transitioning to two-story ones, all while maximizing the glass line on every floor. This innovative design not only brought a fresh, contemporary feel to the building but also offered a more inviting and light-filled environment, making it an attractive space for potential tenants. The end result was a modernized and visually striking Worldwide Plaza, poised to stand out amidst the city’s iconic skyline.

The studio completed a series of work for a high end watch retailer over the last several years. I participated in the re-designing of the atrium space. There were two major aspects to be considered; the first was a grand central staircase and the second was the creation of a new glass roof over the atrium space.

The studio has been working with a high-end watch retailer over the past few years, and I actively participated in the re-design of their atrium space. The project focused on two major aspects: a grand central staircase and a new glass roof for the atrium.

My role involved modeling the staircase and glass roof components using Rhino. I collaborated with my superiors on the staircase’s handrail options, providing insights into critical details that were visible in the model but not evident in the plans and sections. Additionally, I created models for two glass roof options: one with a traditional design, reflecting the historical aspect of the building, and another with a modern and slim appearance, aligned with the atrium’s column structure.

My responsibility was to model the staircase and glass roof components using Rhino. Once I had the staircase modeled, I consulted with my superiors on the options for the handrail. I indicated critical details that were unforeseen by the design team in the plans and sections but were visible in the model. I also modeled the two glass roof options. The first roof option was traditional, reflected the historical aspect of the building, and was similar to the existing roof with more structural elements. The second roof option was modern and slim, with fewer structural elements, and reflected the column structure in the atrium.

To aid decision-making on three open items, I assembled a combined model to share with our visualization consultant. For further clarity, I developed a diagrammatic axon, specifically addressing the column size and shape adjacent to the atrium, spiral stair and handrail alternatives, and the glass roof and its structural aspects. These efforts helped streamline the decision-making process and ensured a successful execution of the atrium’s redesign.

I put together a combined model to export and send to our visualization consultant. In order to facilitate decision making on three open items, I created a diagrammatic axon. The open items requiring decisions were; the column size and shape next to the atrium, the spiral stair and handrail options, and the glass roof and its structure.

Soul Cycle

New York, New York

Ongoing

We collaborated with Soul Cycle to develop a comprehensive programming playbook that not only addressed their office space in New York but also extended to their other locations. At their existing site, they faced challenges such as accommodating additional staff and consistently overbooked meeting spaces. To tackle these issues, we conducted interviews and focus groups to gather data on the preferences and goals of their employees.

Using this valuable data, we set specific programming goals, including workspace-to-meeting ratios, to guide the redesign of their current space. By reimagining their desking culture and introducing a coworking approach, we provided a solution that allowed them to continue expanding in their current location. This innovative strategy enabled us to demonstrate how they could accommodate more people while still having ample meeting space for larger gatherings.

I collaborated with one other team member to compile a comprehensive document, capturing all the data we gathered and incorporating the strategies we devised. The result was a robust programming playbook that empowered Soul Cycle to optimize their office space utilization and enhance their overall work environment.

The Copenhagen Harbor is undergoing a transformation from an industrial harbor to a recreational haven, featuring harbor baths, living spaces, and cultural attractions along the water’s edge. Trekroner, a historic sea fort near the harbor entrance, has become a prominent landmark and a popular destination for both tourists seeking a picturesque view of the city and locals enjoying a peaceful picnic away from the urban bustle.

In a model-making exercise, we drew inspiration from the traditional Danish Vernacular roofs, characterized by a steep pitch to withstand heavy rainfall. This iconic shape was extruded into separate strips, artfully woven throughout the island to create diverse and distinctive spaces. By carefully manipulating the strips to accommodate various functions, we crafted enclosed seating areas for contemplation and created exterior platforms ideal for viewing, docking, and even jumping into the sea.

This innovative project enhances the island’s appeal by providing a variety of experiences and spaces, supporting activities such as docking, changing, eating, swimming, and sightseeing. Embracing the essence of the Danish vernacular, our design unites tourists and locals, adventurers and homebodies, the young and old, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie at this extraordinary meeting point.

Located in Kansas City, Kansas, the University of Kansas Medical School draws a significant demand for housing, catering to both students seeking a short commute and the elderly desiring proximity to medical services. The prime location, directly across from the Medical School, presents an opportunity to address this housing demand while promoting the school’s commitment to healthy living.

This project goes beyond mere housing; it aims to create a vibrant community with a strong sense of place. Envisioning a healthy community, we have included essential amenities that support a wholesome lifestyle, such as a day care, gym, grocery store, office spaces, and communal outdoor areas. Moreover, our design fosters a sense of privacy within the homes, while thoughtfully arranging apartments to encourage connections with neighbors.

Emphasizing the significance of sunlight, the building’s shape has been artfully crafted to harness natural light effectively. We have prioritized outdoor spaces, capitalizing on sunlight to encourage healthy living and well-being among residents.

In summary, our design for this sought-after plot near the Medical School not only addresses the housing needs but also encompasses a holistic approach, creating a community with a strong sense of belonging and a focus on promoting healthy lifestyles.
