SAN FRANCISCO NATIONAL CONVENTION

FIELD TRIP

Thursday, April 25 - Saturday, April 27, 2013 Spring National High School Journalism Convention http://sanfrancisco.journalismconvention.org/

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND? It’s a national convention for student journalists involved in all aspects of student media: yearbook, newspaper, online media, broadcast, photography = about 6,000 students just like you. Professional photographers and writers, contests, college fair, vendors, breakout sessions, keynote speakers, individual awards, learning opportunities from the best in Photoshop, leadership, writing, design, photography, and all communications-related fields. It’s great to put it on your resume that you’ve been a delegate at a national convention. You could win a medal or certificate for your work in a national competition, but you’ll learn a TON no matter what! You’ll also have fun bonding with other WHS students and gaining valuable skills to help you in the future. Eligibility: Students in grades 9-11 from publications, photojournalism and journalism are eligible to attend. Also, seniors from journalism are eligible to attend, as the emphasis is on applying what you learned in The Roar news magazine, Whitney Update website, Details yearbook and in future endeavors. Anyone interested in a leadership position or editorial role for next year should plan to attend.

Cost: Students will have the opportunity to pay for the trip in three installments. There are three $100 scholarships available for students who wish to earn part of the trip. Those are awarded based on a short essay (see reverse). Paid by student/family: = $275 This covers your registration fee as a convention delegate and all convention materials, individual Write-off Contest entry, admission to student dance and two nights hotel at the Marriott Marquis San Francisco. At the time of the trip, you will need money for meals. We will discuss this and other important infor at a student/parent meeting one week before the trip. Paid by publications/journalism/photojournalism: For each student attending, we can cover your cost for the Best of Show competition, convention T-shirt, and the hotel room cost of our chaperones. Reserve a spot: Space is limited and based on maximizing occupancy in hotel rooms. Students interested should complete the bottom of this sheet and return to Mrs. Nichols as soon as possible, or by Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 with $100 deposit. Make checks payable to WHS or you can do cash or money order if preferred. You’ll get a receipt for each payment. Questions: contact Mrs. Nichols at snichols@rocklin.k12.ca.us

FIELD TRIP SIGN-UP & PARENT PERMISSION FORM

Yes! I will be attending the NSPA/JEA convention in San Francisco. I know this involves missing 1.5 school days but those are approved field trip days and do not count against attendance totals or any penalty to the student. I know that all costs associated with this trip are my responsibility and full payment is required prior to trip departure. I understand that I can pay in installments and that a scholarship opportunity is available. By signing this form and submitting a deposit, I understand that a convention registration is being reserved in my name and that I am responsible for all associated costs with this trip. If, in the event of an emergency, I am unable to attend the trip, I realize that some of my costs cannot be refunded, including the deposit.

Scholarship opportunity: For students who need financial assistance with the registration costs of attending a national journalism convention, the Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association offer scholarships. Please write an essay about why you want to attend the convention, what you hope to gain from the convention experience, how it will benefit you, and what you will do with the skills and knowledge to impact WHS publications/photojournalism/journalism in the future. Make sure your essay is typed and double-spaced. Turn it in to Mrs. Nichols with your permission slip as soon as possible, or by Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at the latest.
