Bulbs are Easy, Fun and Beautiful
Hello! News Flash! It has come to our attention that we as a trade have been planting our tulip bulbs too deep. Why make bulb planting so difficult when you only have to dig a 3” hole. Who knew? Read all about it in Research Newsletter #37 authored by Dr. Bill Miller, Cornell University. He states all his findings in a 5 page report. He experimented with planting bulbs in1,3,6 and 8” deep holes. He collected data on 3 growing seasons based mainly on growth characteristics concentrating mostly on the number of flowers per plot. He goes into detail in his report if you interested in finding out more. You can read his research paper located at www.flowerbulbs.cornell.edu/ To summarize his research if you are too busy: If you want your tulips to perennialize in the garden you should now only plant the tulips 3 inches deep. We have been trained to plant tulip bulbs for example 6-8 inches deep. It was believed that temperatures were more even at this depth and this was good for the survival of the bulbs. The first season of his trial Dr Miller and his team planted bulbs in allocated plots of 1”, 3”, 6”and 8” deep. The results of all these different planting depths was all the tulips performed very well the following spring, the first season. The true test was the results produced by these bulbs come the third season.
lis A maryl ler D azz g i w d Lu
The tulips that were planted in the trial plot 3”deep had the highest success rate of the overall survival of the bulb planting and in turn resulted in a nice show of flowers. The tulips planted in 8” deep holes, was highly detrimental to 3rd year survival and flowering. It should be noted that the test plots consisted of a well-drained clay loam and applications of fertilizer was used annually. It is also suggested in the research letter that you cover the bulbs with 2-4 “ of mulch. I always recommend that you wire the shallower areas to protect against any squirrels wanting to dig. Remove the wiring after the first season. Consider instructing your crews to plant tulips at a 3” depth in and amongst your customers perennials and watch your experiment over a 3 year period. Also consider testing narcissus, hyacinths, alliums, and camassia. Remember the planting of bulbs are a great addition to any mid spring garden. Happy Planting Caroline

Bulbs to combine with perennial plants The use of perennials and grasses has made a huge growth in recent years. Both in gardens and in public green they are becoming increasingly common. Therefore, we have a range of flower bulbs that are suitable for planting between perennials and grasses. Some examples can be found in the chapter ‘Design’.
p. 8 - 9
Practical tips Planting methods, fertilisation and growing location
25 years ago, JUB Holland developed a planting machine that can plant bulbs in a simple manner in existing grass areas and roadsides. Mechanical planting, in addition to information on the hand planting of bulbs and fertiliser and mowing policies, can be found in this chapter.
Verges and grass areas
p. 10 - 13
Maintenance-friendly bulbs for roadsides and grass areas Are you looking for easy manageable mixtures which will come back year upon year? Simply look in the section ‘Verges and Grass Areas’. Here you will also find the bee and butterfly mixtures. Some of our mixtures just flower in the early Spring, whilst others start early and flower until the end of June! Depending on your mowing regime, you can choose the most suitable mixtures.
p. 14 - 22
Eye-catchers Bulbs for special places in public space
Are you looking for a striking bulb mixture for a special location, to celebrate a specific event or to emphasise an important location? Visit the category ‘Eye-catchers’! Design Planting bulbs in combination with Perennials Consider planting flower bulbs in and amongst your customer’s perennials. This way the flower bulb plantings do not interfere with your annual plantings. A couple of 100 narcissus, hyacinths, tulips and alliums, camassia and minor bulbs in and amongst perennials in the gardens are great additions to a mid-spring garden.
Here are a couple of suggestion to make your job easier: Spring Bulbs and Perennial Combinations: Tulips Spring Green + Iris sibirica ‘Snow Queen’ Tulip Toronto + Geranium vericolour Tulip Parade + Dicentra spectabilis ‘Alba’ Tulip Ballade + Geranium ‘Mayflower’ Tulip Mount Tacoma + Hosta ‘Albo marginata’ Narcissus Mount Hood + Nepeta Six Hill Giant Narcissus Carlton + Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ Narcissus Pink Charm + Cimicifuga ramosa Leucojum Gravetye Giant + Geranium Magnificum Hyacinth Jan Bos + Penstemon ‘Husker Red’ Chionodoxa forbesii + Brunnera Machrophylla ‘Langtrees’ Allium Globemaster + Iris sibirica ‘Caesar’s Brother’

Practical tips Machine planting
With our special planting machine it is possible to establish mass plantings of flower bulbs undergrass in turf areas such as parks, boulevards and street allowances. For many years we have used our machine for large plantings in Holland, the United Kingdom and other European locations. A very cost-effective method to plant large quantities of flower bulbs in grass areas with a striking result. Many varieties of flower bulbs are suitable for machine planting. It is possible to choose early flowering varieties/mixtures for areas with an intensive mowing schedule. On the other hand a special mixture with an extended flowering time can be used in areas with a more natural, rough appearance and late mowing. Under the right circumstances it is possible to plant 10,000 daffodils or 25,000 crocuses/miscellaneous bulbs per hour. To achieve the best result it is important to follow our instructions and most important: the number of bulbs per m. sq. On our website www.tradewindsinternational.ca you can view a 3 minute informative video showing you exactly how the planting machine works. There will be current pictures of the work we have done along with additional information.
