Days of the Month The number of days in each month has remained unchanged for 2000 years (since 45 B.C. in fact, when Julius Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar). Here’s a well-known mnemonic rhyme which has been in existence for over 400 years, to indicate the exact number of days in each different month: 30 days hath September, April, June and November, All the rest have 31, Excepting February alone (And that has 28 days clear, With 29 in each leap year).

Time and Days of the Month The number of days in each month can also be found by counting across the knuckles and valleys on the back of each clenched fist (from left to right):

Each “knuckle” month has 31 days, while each “valley” month has only 30 days (excepting of course February). February has a smaller “leftover” amount of 28 or 29 days because pre-45 B.C. it was the last month of the Roman calendar year which started every March. *Every 4th year has 366 days and is called a leap year. Each month-name originated from the Roman calendar, and mostly from the pre-Julian (or “Nunian”) calendar where September was Septilis (Latin for ‘seventh month’) and is still the seventh month counting from March. Similarly October, November and December mean ‘eighth, ninth, and tenth month’. The fifth month was Quinctilis until it was renamed Julius (hence July) in honour of Julius Caesar, whereupon his successor the emperor Augustus renamed Sextilis after himself too (hence August). Augustus also added a day to August (making 31) so as match that for Julius! The remaining months are either named after Roman gods (Janus, Mars, Maia, Juno) or have a religious significance (Februarius meaning ‘purification month’ before the new year cycle, and Aprilis being connected to well-being and prosperity).

Seasons The seasons are governed by the tilt of the Earth’s axis in space as it journeys around the Sun in a year. When the South Pole of the Earth is tilted towards the Sun, this is our Summer. Six months later, when the South Pole is tilted away from the Sun, it is our Winter. In between these we have Autumn and Spring. Therefore, the seasons don’t really begin on one day and finish on another. Our orbit around the Sun is continuous. It actually takes quite some time for the Earth to heat up or cool down, and that’s why the seasons change gradually. In Australia, the seasons begin on the first day of a particular calendar month – in March for Autumn, June for Winter, September for Spring and December for Summer. In other parts of the world, such as Europe, it is accepted that the seasons begin on the dates that the Earth passes four special points in its orbit about the Sun. Temperatures on our planet are not determined by the distance of the Earth from the Sun. Rather it is the angle of the Sun’s rays striking the Earth. In Summer, the Sun is high in the Sky and the rays hit the Earth at a steep angle. In winter, the Sun is low in the Sky and the rays strike the Earth at a shallow angle. Page 9

Spelling and Grammar Learning Individual Words - Look, Cover, Write, Check To learn to spell a particular word use the following drill: LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK 1. LOOK: Look carefully at a correct version of the word, while saying it and running a finger under it. Do this several times. This will help create a picture in your mind of the word and help you with how the word sounds. 2. COVER: Cover the word. 3. WRITE: Write the word yourself from memory. 4. CHECK: Uncover the correct version and compare it with the one you have just written. This is the vital part. You must really study the word and fix it in your mind. So you must do the whole drill yourself - and then, if possible, get someone else to check it for you to make sure. If you have written the word incorrectly, repeat stages 1-4 several times. If it is still not right after four tries, leave it and come back to it later. You may then be surprised to find you have remembered it better than you expected. Even if the word is right first time, it is wise to test it again from time to time. Constantly getting things right will boost your confidence and repetition is not a waste of time; it will help with other words as well as that one. The words that give the most difficulty are those which you have already often written incorrectly; you will have a wrong or confused picture of them in your mind. Words that are new to you, ones you have never written before, you may find easier to get correct. Add words you have difficulty with to your own Personal Spelling List on the notes pages at the back of the diary.

Parts of Speech NOUN: A person, place, or thing. Can be the subject or object of a sentence. For example: cat, horse, mother, Australia PRONOUN: A word that replaces or stands for (“pro” = for) a noun. For example: he, she, it ADJECTIVE: A word that describes or modifies a noun. Answers the questions “how many,” “what kind,” etc. For example: happy, red, dangerous VERB: An action word. For example: sit, laugh, play ADVERB: A word that describes or modifies a verb. For example: carefully, quickly, wisely. Also sometimes adds more description to an adjective. (“She was very tall.” “Very” is an adverb describing “tall,” which in turn is an adjective describing “she”.) Adverbs mostly, but not always, end in “-ly”. (However, not every word ending in “ly” is an adverb: “friendly,” for example, is an adjective.)

PREPOSITION: A word that connects the noun to the rest of the sentence. For example: to, at, with, for, against, across. There are 3 types of prepositions: Time and place prepositions – at, on, in, while, during and direction prepositions – under, over, right, across. CONJUNCTION: Words that join together words or parts of a sentence. For example: and, or, but, so, as. Page 14


Spelling and Grammar Putting Words Together PHRASE: An expression (can be a single word, but usually more) which contains a single thought but is not necessarily a complete sentence. Words make up phrases; phrases make up sentences. By some definitions, a phrase cannot contain a verb. For example: We walked down a shady lane “a shady lane� is a phrase. SENTENCE: A group of words that are put together to mean something. A complete sentence has at least a subject and a main verb to state (declare) a complete thought. A subject is the noun that is doing the main verb. The main verb is the verb that the subject is doing. The first word of a written sentence has a capital letter. At the end of the sentence there is a full stop. For example: The man is going for a walk. Man is noun and walk is verb. The subject is the man.

Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is the online equivalent of real-life bullying. If someone sends hurtful or malicious emails or posts within online forums and chat rooms, that person is a cyberbully. In some ways it is easier to bully online than offline because the bully is anonymous and can hide behind a nickname or user name. It is also difficult to track down and punish cyberbullies. Cyberbullying has be defined as “when the Internet, mobile phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person”. This includes actions that use electronic media such as web pages, online discussion groups, forums, blogs, instant messaging or SMS text messaging to deliberately and repeatedly act in a hostile manner. A cyberbully may be a person whom the target knows or an online stranger. A cyberbully may involve other people online who do not even know the target. This is known as a “digital pile-on”. What you can do to avoid cyberbullying? Don’t allow your personal information to be viewed online. For example: Never reveal your password, last name, address, phone number, age or other contact details online. Check emails, texts and “invitations to be friends” carefully and think carefully about having contact with people you do not know or messages with unusual subject headings. If you don’t understand the subject, you should not open the email. Report it to an adult. Do not delete the email until an adult has checked it in case it should be reported to an authority. Beware of contact from “blocked” numbers. If you receive contact from a number you do not know, do not answer or be cautious when talking with the caller. Do not give out personal information until you have confidence you know who you are talking to.
