01 Docklands Precinct Structure Plan Urban Precinct Studio Semester 2, 2018

Accomodation

My final capstone project involved preparing a precinct structure plan for an area within Docklands, Melbourne. The plan aims to recreate a more welcoming and lively neighbourhood and enhance visitors’ experience by investigating in connectivity networks, the public realm and redevelop functioning quality space.

Design and planning principles are based on three themes - Land use and development, Mobility network and Open Space Network. They illustrates the opportunity for future transformation in light of the site analysis and identified issues.

Carlton Urban Design and Planning Report Introduction to Urban Design and Planning Semester 2, 2017

The report aims to address housing issues and invibrancy in Carlton, Melbourne. I proposed adopting the mutli-function building development model to enrich diversity and provide housing supply of small-size apartment/studios in cater to the international students housing demand due to close proximity to major universities.

Morphological Mapping Semester 1, 2018

This subject focues on mapping a major transect, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. Observation, recording and mapping are carried out to produce studio works.

Proposed Homeless Spots in Melboure Laneways

MELBOURNE WITH URBAN PLAZA AND LANEWAYS

The idea of this collage is to collaborate the concept of urban plazas from Detroit’s urban form and London New Court Grid Plan into Melbourne CBD while keeping Melbourne’s unique laneways character.

Data collection for the mapping process was made on a weekday night, showing existing homeless spots along the transact. Lighting conditions and the pedestrian flow during late night are mapped out as well showing the relationship between homeless spots, brightness of the area and the public.

The homeless issue has always been a debatable problem in Melbourne. Conflict happens when the homeless tends to occupy pedestrian space and entrances of shops’ interfaces. It also poses adverse visual impact on the city. This map proposes new shelter spots for the homeless, after investigation on various aspects to be considered by one as a homeless looking for a shelter on the street.

The Elizabeth transact is packed with buildings, resulting in a high density living environment which lacks urban open spaces. The collage would provide a lot more open spaces in the urban area. The functionality and diversity along the transact would be increased greatly.

Detroit, MI, CA Placing a large urban plaza at the Queen Victoria Market junction could encourage social interactions and community engagement in the neighbourhood. The idea of it being surrounding by built urban form is to allow people from all directions to come together in the center.

After detailed map analysis, homeless people tend in stay in spots with less pedestrians and relatively darker spots especially on Elizabeth street. Melbourne city is unique of its’ laneways across the city. I reckon that this city characteristic should be taken advantage of, by moving the homeless people in them. In this way, the homeless will have a less disturbed environment to stay in without affecting the public’s access to pedestrian space.

London New Court Grid Adding small urban open spaces in the middle of building blocks can improve the provision of open areas for surrounding residents. These tiny spots are full of different possibilities, be it recreational parks, café alleys, gathering spots or temporary markets. Vibrancy and diversity of the neighbourhood can be added to the transact. 3D urban built form
