REMEMBERING
MISS KATE IRELAND Perhaps no one figure has cast a longer shadow on the organization in our fiftyseven year history than Kate Ireland, more commonly referred to as “Miss Kate”. Her tenacious spirit and dedicated leadership ushered Tall Timbers into a new era with a global reputation for exemplary science based research and a national model for land conservation. She served as Vice Chairman, Chairman and Chairman Emeritus of the Tall Timbers Board for 21 years. Under her watchful eye and headstrong spirit, Tall Timbers grew exponentially in both size and stature. During her tenure as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Tall Timbers more than tripled the amount of money raised annually to support our research and conservation programs. As Miss Kate both led and generously supported Tall Timbers, she was vigilant in focusing the priorities of the organization. She worked tirelessly to promote prescribed burning as a necessary land management tool for healthy forests and abundant wildlife. Responding to her vision, the Fire Ecology Program has strengthened Tall Timbers’ leadership role in the science of fire ecology. As a result, Tall Timbers, through research and education, has influenced fire management on hundreds of thousands of acres of private and public land. Kate was a staunch advocate of hunting and luckily, for Tall Timbers, an even more enthusiastic advocate of quail. Through her steadfast support of the Game Bird Program she helped to strengthen the program, and as a result, this program is recognized as the preeminent authority on the habits, conservation and enhancement of Northern Bobwhite Quail. Her once-fledgling Red Hills Conservation Association, now known as the Tall Timbers Land Conservancy, is currently one of the largest regional land trusts in the Southeast with over 127,100 acres under conservation easements. She led by example and we are forever indebted to her. For this, we honor her by hosting this event in her memory.
William E. Palmer, Ph.D. CEO/President

COMMISSIONED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE 18th ANNUAL KATE IRELAND MEMORIAL AUCTION
10THE TALL TIMBERS LONGLEAF GUN THE GUN: The longleaf pine is the sequoia of the South. As a tribute to this great ecosystem, we commissioned Scottish bespoke gunmaker David McKay Brown along with Creative Arts trained engraver, Mirko Agnellini to create “The Tall Timbers Longleaf Gun”— a 28-gauge round-action side-by-side embellished with classic scroll intertwined with longleaf pine motifs (cones, needles, foliage) and paired with a bobwhite game scene inspired by collaborating artist C.D. Clarke. The Longleaf Gun is thematically the first of its kind—if there is a soul of the South, then this is its gun. THE GUNMAKER: David McKay Brown is an independent best-quality gunmaker, a rarity in modern times. His Scottish round action guns are highly acclaimed the world over. Established in 1967, Brown has a small team of craftsmen at his Bothwell, Scotland workshop. He is one of a rare breed who can make all parts of a gun himself. His passion for gun making is matched only by his enthusiasm for the sport itself. COLLECTION INCLUDES: •The Tall Timbers Long Leaf Gun crafted by David McKay Brown Gunmaker, Ltd in collaboration with C.D. Clarke and Creative Arts trained engraver Mirko Agnellini. •Original C.D. Clarke watercolor, “Side by Side” 10 ½ “x 12 ½” watercolor •Longpine Plantation wild quail hunt and clay target shoot

THE ARTIST: C.D. Clarke paints sporting scenes on location “en plein aire” all over the world. He has painted in Patagonia, Alaska, the United Kingdom, Russia, the Caribbean, the Seychelles, all over the United States and many other places. By working from life right on the river, bonefish flat or marsh he captures the lights, color and feeling of being in these special places. His art has been featured in Gray’s Sporting Journal, Fly Rod & Reel, Sporting Classics, and Field & Stream, as well as many sporting books. THE HUNT/CLAY TARGET SHOOT: You and a guest will enjoy a half-day day wild quail hunt on one of the most prestigious of the iconic Thomasville quail plantations.
