WELCOME TO THE MCDONALD’S TOWNSVILLE RUNNING FESTIVAL MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the Townsville Running Festival – another great Townsville North Queensland experience on the State’s dynamic and growing events calendar. Tourism is one of the four pillars of the Queensland economy. A key theme of the recently launched Destination Success 20-year plan for Queensland tourism is to identify and promote iconic experiences throughout Queensland’s many destinations. By working hand-in-hand through an industry-government partnership, we have a plan to secure the long term future of Queensland’s tourism industry. The government is proud to support the Townsville Running Festival through Tourism and Events Queensland, recognising the importance of events in driving visitors to regional areas and showcasing Queensland’s destination experiences. Events like this are not only a source of community pride, they also bring social and economic benefit to the host community and will assist us to reach our goal to double annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020. The Townsville Running Festival is supported through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Regional Development Program, which to date has invested more than $23.5 million across 1,091 Queensland events. I would like to thank the local community, volunteers and event organisers for their terrific efforts in delivering this event for Townsville North Queensland. The Hon. Jann Stuckey Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games

Townsville has a long and proud history of hosting a vibrant running festival in the middle of the tropical winter. Initiated in 1999, the McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival was Australia’s first event that brought together courses of various lengths, and runners of diverse ability in the one program to create an official ‘festival’. With just 315 competitors lining the streets in that first year, word of Townsville’s friendly local runners and stunning course has spread and we now have almost 3,000 runners join us on the first Sunday of August each year. With the starting pistol firing before the sun rises, runners in the Tony Ireland Holden Townsville Marathon are privy to some of the most spectacularly lit views of Townsville’s historic city centre and the seemingly endless stretch of sand and glistening Coral Sea that run side by side with the course. As the sun comes up and the morning’s first rays of light start to bounce off the rocky face of iconic Castle Hill the pitter-patter of marathoners’ feet is joined by a stampede of runners in shorter events including the Queensland Country Health Fund Half Marathon, The Athlete’s Foot 10K Classic, The Townsville Bulletin Adult 5K Fun Run and Walk, The McDonald’s Junior 5K Fun Run and Walk, and this year, the brand new Townsville Airport 2.5K Hero Run. The McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival provides a direct economic boost to the community, while promoting awareness and education on fitness, nutrition and healthy lifestyles– all of which contribute to fostering a strong and vibrant community. Raising money for charity and community groups in the region has always been an immense goal of the Festival. There is a large focus on Ronald McDonald House Charities and its work for families who need it most. Illness, uncertainty and fear can have a devastating affect on families. The Townsville Airport 2.5K Hero Run allows competitors, individuals or a team, to choose their own community group or local cause. Runners can get active and make an impact by increasing awareness of important issues.

RACE NUMBERS
New this year TEAR-OFF STRIP
It is compulsory to wear your race number in your race. A timing device is attached to your number. This device can be checked on a timing mat located at registration on Saturday. Attach your race number with pins provided – do not fold, bend or wrinkle your race number.
A tear-off strip is attached to your race number to be used as identification at bag drop.
For identification purposes wear your race number facing forward. We urge you to complete the medical details on the rear of your race number. Race numbers are colour coded per race. You are entitled to keep your race number and timing tag as a souvenir. Many runners are now competing in events in honour or in memory of someone. All race numbers this year have a space to write a name if you wish. Remember no race number means no race time.

AN INITIATIVE OF
Debbie, 50, died from a cardiac arrest in 2012, while Katrina, 45, was lost to Bipolar Disorder this year; but not before the sisters inspired those around them with their courage and determination. Among the team are Katrina’s husband Steve and her two children; Katrina and Debbie’s brother, sister, and 71-year-old mother; and many friends and relatives. Dallas Bell, who’s been coordinating Team Harling, said both sisters were independent and lived every day with purpose. “Debbie’s blood clots lead to her having both legs amputated and living in a wheelchair in her late 30s,” said Dallas. Debbie remained independent, finding work and taking up wheelchair basketball. Katrina showed the same determination, doing everything that she could and not letting anything stop her. Mrs Bell says the sisters remain an inspiration to everyone. Team Harling will run in singlets with a verse dedicated to the ladies, and after the race will release balloons in tribute. “While most of us will be running 2.5km or 5km, I’ll be taking on the half marathon. I know it’s going to be physically taxing, but if Deb could live her last years in a wheelchair and Trina with Bipolar without complaint, a two-hour run should be easy by comparison,” Dallas said.
BEFORE THE RACE EVENT ARENA
This is the grassed area behind Tobruk Pool – it includes the finish line, event administration, water tent, food, first aid, massages, spectator seating, presentation stage and more. Access to the Event Arena will be from the waterfall end of Tobruk Pool as the Strand promenade will be closed at the Water Park toilet block and Mariners Drive from 5am on Sunday, 3 August. All pedestrian traffic will be directed onto the footpath around Tobruk Pool from 5am to 12pm. There will be no need for competitors to access the Event Arena prior to race starts and access will be restricted.
TOILETS
Portable toilets will be available adjacent to the Race Assembly Area and Bag Drop tents. On course – public toilets are available at Strand Park (next to Picnic Bay SLSC) and the Rockpool; and portable toilets near Seagulls, Rowes Bay (opp Caravan Park) and at 3 Mile Creek.
TRAVEL AND PARKING
Best vehicle access to the Festival is via North Ward. Both lanes of The Strand will be closed from 5am until 10.30am. Do not try to access the area from Flinders Street. Best parking options are in North Ward including the parking station in Leichardt Street. Allow extra time to travel, park and walk to the event. We suggest you plan to arrive at the event one hour prior to race start to allow plenty of time to warm up and get to the assembly area.
ROAD SAFETY
Runners will have to share some areas of the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K courses with traffic. Traffic will be controlled by Police and Traffic Controllers. Please obey any Police instructions. Run on the left hand side of the course or as directed by the race marshals stationed on each corner. The 5K and 2.5K courses are traffic free.

SUPER MUM READY TO RUN This year, the brand new Townsville Airport 2.5K Hero Run has opened the McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival up to people of all ages, including children in prams and runners as young as five for the first time. Townsville parents Kerrie and Todd Hinschen have entered the event and will be running with their 17 month old son Harley wheeled along in front of them. “I started running after Harley was born, and completed a 10km run when he was six months old,” Mrs Hinschen said. “This will be the first event I have entered with the pram, but I’ve had practise running around Riverside Gardens with Harley and my husband to prepare for the Hero Run.” President of the Townsville Road Runners, Tony Gordon, said adding the Townsville Airport Hero Run to the Festival has been a big step towards making the event even more inclusive and community-minded. “We’re always on the look out for ways to make fitness more accessible to everyone and the Hero Run means that we can finally open the Festival up to new mums and engage children in active living from a very young age. Adding a kid-and pram-friendly event means families can all run in the Festival together, and choose any local organisation to raise money for in the process.” The possibility of fundraising for a charity appealed to the Hinschens, who will donate funds they raise to ACT for Kids. “ACT for Kids has been close to our hearts for some time – for Harley’s first birthday, we asked people to make a donation to them instead of giving Harley birthday presents,” Mrs Hinschen said. “We’re thinking of becoming foster carers down the track, so we admire the work that ACT for Kids does and want to be able to contribute to them in some way.”

ESPECIALLY FOR MARATHONERS A Big Welcome to the Tony Ireland Townsville Marathoners! With not long to go to the 2014 Tony Ireland Townsville Marathon it is time to recover from any niggling injuries and strengthen for the big day. Unfortunately this year we are not holding a Friday night dinner but we hope to re-introduce the dinner next year. Registration is on Saturday 2nd August in the event arena behind Tobruk Pool starting at 11am until 4pm
RACE DAY SUNDAY 3RD AUGUST
Please note: The Tony Ireland Townsville Marathon will start at 5.30am. Please assemble for the start of the race at 5.20am. This year, we will start on the road in front of the Tobruk Pool, North Ward to avoid running on the dark footpath before sunrise.
CLIMATE
It is expected to be dry (which is typical for this time of the year) and approximately 11-15oC at the start of the race. By late morning the day should warm to the mid-20s. We will have a closer prediction of the race day temperature throughout the week. If it is warm please remember to stay hydrated with electrolytes, avoid over hydration and consider wearing a hat.
WHERE TO PARK
Marathoners can park directly in front/beside Tobruk Pool; from Gelatissimo to the Waterfall on far side of The Strand; and towards the Rockpool on both sides opposite St Patricks College. Please keep clear from the Waterfall to the Fryer Street roundabout on the Castle Hill side of this block, as this
will be the starting area for other races. Parked cars can not be moved before 9am. The Strand and Howitt Street will close before the Marathon begins, so access to The Strand must be prior to 5am. Special drinks can be left at the registration on Saturday, August 2 between 11am until 4pm or on Sunday 3rd up until 5.10am. The drink used at the drink station is Powerade. Toilets can be located in and outside Tobruk Pool prior to the start of the Marathon. Change rooms/toilets are also located inside Tobruk Pool. The Marathon Course is 2 x 10.5k loops plus 1 x 21.1k loop. The latter is the Half Marathon course which starts at 7.10am. See maps on the website as well as large maps at registration on Saturday. We will have someone stationed at those maps on Saturday to answer any questions. Most of the course is divided by cones – please stay to the left. K Markers – all marks are located on signs about 1 metre high on the left hand side of the course in the running direction. Marathon marks are blue. Half Marathon marks are yellow and marks common to both courses are blue/yellow. Have a great run and enjoy the day. I expect the breakfast partiers to again be on The Esplanade at Rowes Bay. They offer good encouragement as you run past the party several times! Post-race Massage will be available for $1 per minute and if you don’t want a deep tissue massage it may be wise to remind the masseur first. The Post-race Party will be heldat the Watermark on The Strand from 2pm. We will see you there if you are ready to party after the run or just have a quiet drink to celebrate the day. HYDRATION FOR MARATHONERS How important is hydration to a marathoner’s safety and performance? Staying properly hydrated is important during marathon racing for both safety and performance. Hydration status in marathon runners depends on the balance between sweat losses and fluid replacement. Dehydration occurs when fluid losses are not adequately replaced and its risk can be increased by: • Warm, humid conditions • Male Gender • Fitness level • Acclimitazation • Running Pace Keeping the body properly hydrated improves marathon safety and performance by maintaining blood valume and cardiovascular function. Dehydration decrases blood volume, increases heart rate and impedes heat loss, causing marathoners to slow their pace and drop out of the race. It is also possible for runners to drink too much fluid, which can result in a potentially fatal condition called exercise-associated hypnotremia (EAH). EAH often occurs in slower marathoners, as they have the greatest opportunity to intake fluid faster than they’re losing it. Balancing fluid intake and loss is the fluid replacement goal for a safe and efficient marathon. It’s important to determine your individual fluid needs, as they will differ from runner to runner.
WHAT IS EAH AND WHY IS IT DANGEROUS?
EAH is defined as a blood sodium concentration less than 135 mmol/L. The sodium in sports drink may delay the onset of EAH, but drinking too much sports drink can still result in it. Fluid overload dilutes the blood’s sodium concentration and if the kidneys do not clear the excess water the brain can swell. Significant brain swelling can be fatal.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EAH?
Syptoms begin to appear when serum sodium levels fall below 135 mmol/L and water begins to flow into the body cells. Early symptoms of EAH include weight gain, puffiness, nausea, increasing headache, vomiting and ‘just not feeling right’. More serious symptoms can include confusion, irritability or seizures. If left untreated EAH can lead to serious brain swelling, lung, congestion, coma and death. It can take time for EAH symptoms to appear, so be aware of these symptoms for a few hours after each race and avoid drinking large amounts of fluid until you are urinating normally.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION?
Signs and symptoms of dehydration can include headache. Thirst, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, weakness, abnormal chills, thick saliva, irritability and fatigue.
HOW CAN I AVOID DEHYDRATION?
The best way to avoid dehydration is to drink enough fluid to minimise weight loss during the race, but avoid over-drinking and weight-gain. In faster runners, thirst can lag behind and be a late indicator that dehydration has begun, In slower runners, thirst is a timely indicator that you should begin to replace your fluids.
HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH TO DRINK?
To determine your unique fluid needs, estimate your sweat rate by weighing yourself naked and then running for 1 hour in the same conditions you expect for race day. Do not drink during this run. At the end of the run, towel off and weigh yourself naked again. The differences in weight (ounces) is about your hourly sweat rate and no more than that should be replaced in each hour of your race. Eg. If you’ve lost 12oz during your run, you’ll need to drink no more 4oz every 20 minutes during your race to maintain fluid balance. You should also weigh yourself periodically before and after training runs to assess your weight loss or gain during a marathon. Approximately
2% weight loss during a marathon represents optimal hydration in most runners; and drinking at 15 to 20 minute intervals during a run should sustain this. If you find you have gained weight after a training run or race, it is a clear indication that your fluid intake was too high. If you have lost more than 2% of your pre-race body weight you may need to be drinking more. If you are running at a slow pace (generally >4hrs for a marathon) and you do not know your sweat rate, you should drink each time you feel thirsty to avoid both EAH and dehydration. On those occasions you know you’ll be sweating heavily, drink 10-20oz of fluid about one hour before your run to help you start with adequate fluid levels.
HOW CAN I AVOID DEHYDRATION AND EAH?
• Learn your unique hydration needs. Fluid needs vary widely, so listen to your own body ad react accordingly. • Try to match fluid intake to just below weight loss. Get to know how much body weight you lose during a long run and drink just less than this during the race. • Know that a little weight loss during a run is good. During a marathon you should lose 2-3pounds. If you do not lose weight you are seven times more likely to get EAH. • Do not overdrink. • If you’re feeling the heat, slow your pace. More fluid will not directly cool you down. • If you are a slow runner drink only when you are thirsty. • Keep your urine a pale colour like lemonade. An apple juice colour indicates too little fluid, while clear urine indicates too much. • Recognise the warning signs of dehydration and EAH • If you are not feeling well during or after a race and simple changes do not make you feel better, seek medical attention immediately.

I hope that the get up will raise a lot of eyebrows and cause people to start talking more about PTSD
ARMOURED RUN FOR LOST SOLDIER
“There’s still a big stigma surrounding PTSD and mental health, not just in the Defence Force but in the general public as well, with soldiers worried that seeking help with PTSD may prevent career progression,” said Corporal Heilbronn.
The palm-lined streets of Townsville are the last place you would expect to see a soldier running in full body armour, but that is exactly how Corporal Brian Heilbronn will spend his morning on August 3, 2014.
“Because I’ve had my own issues with PTSD, it was hard to come to terms with the fact that Captain McKay had suffered more than I had. It was a bit of a shock; he was the first person I’ve known directly who has taken their life.
Corporal Heilbronn will run the annual Tony Ireland Holden Marathon in 10kg of body armour in memory of his former Commander Paul McKay and to raise funds and awareness for Soldier On.
“At the Townsville Running Festival I’ll be wearing my tiered body armour system, which is the ensemble we wear in training and on operations, and is basically body armour and webbing in one,” said Corporal Heilbronn.
In January 2014 the body of Captain Paul McKay, an Afghanistan veteran, was found in the mountains of New York State. Captain McKay – who had been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from his time serving Australia – had been missing for two weeks.
“I hope that the get-up will raise a lot of eyebrows and cause people to start talking more about PTSD and how the community and organisations like Soldier On can help ease returning soldiers through their transitions from deployment.”
Corporal Heilbronn served with Captain McKay when he was his Platoon Commander in 2010.
“Soldier On is the link between the community and returning service personnel. They enhance rehabilitation, inspire service men and women to overcome obstacles in their day-to-day lives either physically or mentally, and enable them to live fulfilling and rewarding lives.”
“I worked with Captain McKay for a year, deploying with him to Malaysia on a training exercise. In early 2011 he was deployed to Afghanistan where on his return home he was diagnosed with PTSD. That was a psychological battle that he lost when he took his life last year.” Corporal Heilbronn will run the full 42.2km marathon as part of the McDonald’s® Townsville Running Festival in combat body armour to help draw attention to the issues that face serving soldiers when they return from overseas deployments.
“I’d be happy to hit my $5,000 goal for Soldier On, but would love to raise even more for them,” Corporal Heilbronn said. To donate to Corporal Heilbronn’s fundraising efforts, go to http://run.gofundraise.com.au/page/HeilbronnB
